OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska has passed the grim milestone of 1,000 deaths linked to the coronavirus, and the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 remains high in the state.

Officials reported 29 new deaths Monday to give the state 1,018 total since the pandemic began. The state also reported 1,941 new cases of the virus to push the total up to 128,407.

The number of people being treated for the virus in hospitals grew Monday to 907 from the previous day's 896. That remains below the record of 987 that was set on Nov. 20, but the total is four times higher than it was two months ago.

The state said COVID-19 patients are filling 23% of Nebraska's hospital beds. If that number reaches 25%, additional social distancing restrictions will be imposed across the state.

Nebraska continued to have the sixth-highest rate of infections in the nation on Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska declined over the past two weeks, going from 2,027.43 new cases per day on Nov. 16 to 1,772.14 new cases per day on Monday.

$140,000 winning Pick 5 ticket sold in Purdum

The West Central District Health Department updated their COVID-19 Dashboard today and it showed another increase in positive cases of the virus in their jurisdiction.

On Monday, WCDHD reported 142 new confirmed cases since they last updated the numbers on Friday.

Data currently shows there are 49 people hospitalized with the virus, with three ventilators currently in use at Great Plains Health (GPH). GPH currently reports that 18 percent of their Intensive Care Unit beds are available.

WCDHD officials report 142 new positive COVID cases since Friday

Virtual big game presentations scheduled across Nebraska in December

The Mid-Plains Community College Valentine Campus is joining forces with Valentine Economic Development to address a shortage of health care workers in the region.

The organizations will offer a free panel discussion from 5:30-7 p.m. Dec. 8 to let people know about the opportunities that exist in the field of health care.

“We’re really trying to get people excited about entering a high-demand health care profession,” said Carolyn Petersen, MPCC Valentine Campus administrator. “We also want to share the benefits of working in a rural setting. Health care facilities around here are starving for help, and it’s important to us to help meet that need.”

The panel will consist of hospital, nursing home and emergency medical service representatives among others.

Discussion topics will include employment opportunities as well as age and educational requirements. Information about financial assistance for training will also be provided. Money for tuition, books, occupation-related equipment and fuel vouchers may be available for qualified applicants.

MPCC Valentine Campus to host panel discussion on health care

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The results of Nebraska's record-setting 2020 election became official Monday as the state canvassing board certified them with little fanfare.

The all-Republican board voted 5-0 to approve the final election numbers. According to the board, 966,920 voters cast ballots, amounting to roughly 3 in 4 registered voters and an all-time high for turnout. The turnout was heavily driven by mail-in ballots amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The board's vote also confirmed that Nebraska will deliver four of its Electoral College votes to President Donald Trump and one to President-elect Joe Biden. Biden won the politically divided 2nd Congressional District, which includes Omaha and its suburbs, while Trump won the rest of the GOP-dominated state.

Despite the pandemic and Trump's longshot attempts to discredit the results in other states, Secretary of State Bob Evnen, a board member, said Nebraska's election went smoothly. He credited election workers, volunteers and vendors for an election he called uneventful.

"Nebraska voters were undaunted in the sense that they voted in a record number," Evnen, said.

Nebraska and Maine are the only two states that are able to split their electoral votes in presidential elections. Nebraska has only done so once before, when Barack Obama won the 2nd District in 2008.

The canvassing board is comprised of the state's top statewide constitutional officers: Evnen, Gov. Pete Ricketts, Attorney General Doug Peterson, State Treasurer John Murante and State Auditor Charlie Janssen.

Nebraska had four local races that were eligible for automatic recounts, but three of those were waived. One recount is expected over a seat on the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District, where one vote separates the winner and loser.

Nebraska canvassing board certifies 2020 election results

TECUMSEH, Neb. (AP) - An inmate has died at the state prison in Tecumseh, and a grand jury will be convened to investigate.

Todd Shade, 47, died at the prison on Sunday, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said in a news release. The cause of Shade's death has not been determined, but prison officials said he was being treated for a long-term medical condition.

Shade was serving a 100-year sentence on two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child. He began serving his sentence in 1995.

State law requires a grand jury investigation anytime someone dies in state custody.

Nebraska State Troopers removed 34 alleged impaired drivers from the road and assisted more than 470 motorists during the Thanksgiving “Click It or Ticket” campaign. The campaign ran from November 16 through November 29.

“Travel plans were certainly affected by COVID-19 precautions this Thanksgiving,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP). “Troopers reported fewer travelers than an ordinary Thanksgiving weekend, but remained diligent in the mission to keep Nebraska roads safe.”

Throughout the campaign, troopers arrested 34 people for driving under the influence and cited 22 drivers for having an open alcohol container. Troopers also issued citations for speeding (776), minor in possession (7), driving under suspension (66), no proof of insurance (42), no seat belt (25), and improper child restraint (9). Troopers also performed 477 motorist assists during the campaign.

The annual Thanksgiving “Click It or Ticket” campaign is made possible thanks in part to funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office (NDOT-HSO). The effort included dozens of law enforcement agencies throughout Nebraska and hundreds more around the country. NSP’s portion of the NDOT-HSO grant funding was $25,000.

“While this Thanksgiving provided great weather and travel conditions throughout the state, we know that winter weather is ahead in the coming weeks and months,” said Colonel Bolduc. “We urge all drivers to be prepared for winter weather on the roads. Be safe as you travel this winter by adjusting your speed to the conditions, avoiding distractions, driving sober, and always wearing your seat belt.”

 Health officials reported 521 deaths in November _ more than all other months of the pandemic combined.

 The total death toll from the virus is currently at 946. During November, South Dakota had the nation’s highest rate of COVID-19 deaths per capita, with Johns Hopkins researchers tracking 59 per 100,000 people. 

The state has the nation’s ninth-highest rate of death over the course of the entire pandemic. 

Meanwhile, students in the Rapid Area School district are returning to in-person instruction.

South Dakota marks November as deadliest month of pandemic

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Gov. Pete Ricketts said Monday he will extend Nebraska's current coronavirus restrictions through December as the number of residents hospitalized with COVID-19 dipped below 900 for the first time in more than two weeks.

The current restrictions require masks in certain businesses, such as salons and tattoo parlors, where it's difficult to maintain 6 feet of distance between people. They had been set to expire Monday.

Despite the decline in hospitalizations, hospitals remained strained across the state. The state reported 1,143 new cases of the virus to give it a total of 126,466 cases since the pandemic began. The number of deaths remained unchanged at 989.

Nebraska had the sixth-highest rate of infection in the nation on Sunday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Over the past week, one out of every 156 people in the state was diagnosed with COVID-19.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska decreased over the past two weeks, going from 2,062.71 new cases per day on Nov. 15 to 1,756.29 new cases per day on Sunday.

Nebraska extends coronavirus restrictions through December

The North Platte Community College music department will ring in the holidays with a jazz and choir concert on December 10.

The concert, which begins at 1:30 p.m., will be offered via livestream at the college's <a href="https://npccknights.com/">website</a> and on the college’s <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/NorthPlatteKnights">YouTube</a> channel.

“We’re encouraging everyone to grab a mug of hot chocolate, get in the Christmas spirit and enjoy some much-needed respite from the current challenges we are all facing,” said Kristin Simpson, music instructor. “This concert will be a breath of fresh air and optimism for a better future. We have a wide variety of holiday music to share - some will get toes tapping and other selections will go straight to the soul.”

Songs will include “Mele Kalikimaka,” “African Noel,” “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” “Santa Baby” and “A Sleigh Full of Saxes” among many others.

Simpson will direct the choir, which includes the following performers:

North Platte: Thomas Bartling, Joseph Frailey, Jordan Leal, Lisa Pickett, Ashtyn Winder

Choir members Emmons, McConnell, Leal, Terry, Rogge and Montgomery will also perform as part of the jazz band. They will be joined by Austin Macek, of Gothenburg, Teagan Kennel, of Norfolk and Don Kurre and Gregg Todd, of North Platte.

The jazz band will be directed by Jennifer Winder.

Nebraska virus hospitalizations dip but remain at high level

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - More employees of the Nebraska prison system have tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said in a statement Saturday night that four staff members had tested positive for COVID-19. Two of those work at the Omaha Correctional Center, one works at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution and one works at the department's central office.

The infected staff members are isolating themselves at home, and officials plan to notify anyone who had been in close contact with them so they can quarantine themselves.

The latest cases bring the number of Nebraska prison staffers infected since the pandemic began to 325. Of those, 228 have recovered.

The department also said Friday that 677 inmates have tested positive for the virus and four have died. Nearly half of the affected inmates - 312 of them - have recovered from the virus.

The state reported 1,257 new cases Saturday. Nebraska has had 125,323 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 989 deaths from the disease since the pandemic began.

Nebraska had the fifth-highest rate of new cases Saturday. Over the past week, one person in every 157 people in the state was diagnosed with COVID-19.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska decreased over the past two weeks, going from 2,032.71 new cases per day on Nov. 14 to 1,772.14 new cases per day on Saturday.

(AP)-Black Friday online sales hit a new record this year as pandemic-wary Americans filled virtual carts instead of real ones.

Consumers spent an estimated $9 billion on U.S. retail websites on Black Friday, according to Adobe Analytics, which tracks online shopping. That was a 22% increase over the previous record of $7.4 billion set in 2019.

Meanwhile, traffic to physical stores plummeted as retailers tried to prevent crowds by cutting their hours and limiting doorbuster deals. U.S. store visits dropped by 52% on Black Friday, according to Sensormatic Solutions, a retail tracker. Jewelry and footwear saw some of the biggest in-person sales declines, according to RetailNext, a shopping tracker. Apparel sales were down 50%, while sales of home goods fell by 39%.

Even with that drop, Black Friday will still likely end up as one of the biggest in-person shopping days in the U.S. this year, Field said. He thinks many people will still shop for the holidays in person but will choose mid-week days when crowds are smaller. Heavier in-store discounts and concerns about lengthy shipping times could also draw shoppers closer to Christmas.

“Black Friday had a lot to lose, but some of it is going to be distributed throughout the holiday season,” Field said.

One trend that could remain after the pandemic ends is that stores could remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, Field said. Since 2013, a growing number of stores had opened on Thanksgiving to match their competitors and get a jump start on Black Friday. But it’s typically not a big day for retailers, and this year many stayed closed. Thanksgiving store traffic was down 95%, he said.

Field said stores may be rethinking the cost of paying employees and opening on Thanksgiving when they could easily make up for those sales online.

“I wonder, now that we’re seeing a season where they were able to cut the cord on it, if it will give them pause,” he said.

Adobe expects Monday to be the largest online sales day in U.S. history, with estimated spending of $10.8 billion to $12.7 billion.

One reason for the big numbers is that people are shopping online for things such as groceries and alcohol that they bought in person before the pandemic, Adobe said. As for more traditional gifts, Hot Wheels cars, Lego sets, Apple AirPods, Samsung televisions and video games are among the biggest sellers.

Big retailers such as Walmart and Target benefited from the surge, but small retailers did as well, Adobe said. Sales at big stores surged by 403% on Thanksgiving and Black Friday compared to the daily average in October, but sales at smaller retailers also grew by 349%.

Black Friday sees record online as US shoppers stay home

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska has agreed to pay $850,000 to a woman and her daughter who were attacked by one of two convicted sex offenders who escaped from a maximum-security prison by hiding in laundry carts.

The Omaha World-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/news/state-and-regional/crime-and-courts/state-of-nebraska-settles-lawsuit-for-850-000-over-2016-assault-by-escaped-prison-inmate/article_340919e7-46b9-543e-a916-b51577de0d90.html" target="_blank">reports&nbsp;</a>that the attorney for Cindi and Christine Allen called the June 2016 case a "tragedy" that has continued to cause complications for the woman.

After escaping from the Lincoln Correctional Center, Armon Dixon found his way to an apartment where 61-year-old Cindi Allen lived. He entered through an unlocked patio door, grabbing and threatening Allen's 21-year-old daughter. When the women resisted, Dixon beat them with a blunt object.

"This had a profound effect on them and it's continuing to do that," said Lincoln attorney Terry Dougherty.

Eventually, Cindi Allen, was able to flee from the apartment and alert a couple parked in the parking lot. Her escape distracted Dixon enough that her daughter was able to crawl into a bathroom and lock the door.

Dixon fled from the scene and was apprehended by police about four hours later.

The Nebraska Attorney General's Office, which defended the state, declined to comment Wednesday on the settlement, which was approved in September.

The classes are taught by marketing expert Tiffany Roe. Roe is a MPCC alum. After Mid-Plains, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Grand Canyon University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Ottawa University.

As a small business owner, herself, Roe is passionate about digital marketing and the advantages it can have in helping small businesses make cost effective changes that improve profits.

The classes are $45 each or three for $119, the latter of which also includes a 45-minute consultation with Roe.

MPCC offers on-demand marketing classes

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Seven of Nebraska's 10 largest cities have imposed mask mandates to try to slow the spread of the coronavirus, though Gov. Pete Ricketts has resisted ordering them to be worn throughout the state.

The cities issued the orders as the number of virus cases, hospitalizations and deaths surged over the last month.

The local mandates mean more than half of Nebraska's 1.95 million people live in communities that require masks to be worn in indoor public settings,&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/news/state-and-regional/7-of-nebraskas-10-largest-cities-now-mandate-masks-find-out-where/article_a8259991-4ca0-5ce8-835e-6df62bbd6053.html" target="_blank">according to the Omaha World-Herald</a>.

Most cities with mandates are in eastern and central Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney, Norfolk, Columbus and Hastings.

City officials in the more conservative western Nebraska have said they were encouraging people to wear masks but not requiring it, which is the approach Ricketts has taken. Among those cities are North Platte, Scottsbluff, Gering and Alliance.

Ricketts, a Republican, has repeatedly refused to issue a statewide mandate despite pleas from many of the state's public health officials. Ricketts said he doesn't think a statewide mandate is appropriate because it would create resentment and some people would resist it, although he noted that the state has enacted a mask requirement for certain indoor businesses.

Nebraska reported 2,876 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, a decline from the record daily highs earlier this month but still a much larger number than usual. The number of daily active hospitalizations dropped slightly, to 931, according to the&nbsp;<a href="https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/ece0db09da4d4ca68252c3967aa1e9dd" target="_blank">state's online tracking portal</a>.

Nebraska has had 122,952 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 982 deaths from the disease since the pandemic began.

7 of Nebraska's 10 largest cities have local mask mandates

Brandon Imes is still at-large. Anyone with any information is asked to contact local law enforcement or 911 immediately. Imes should be considered armed and dangerous.

As of Saturday morning, the Department of Corrections still lists Imes as escaped. We have not received any further updates from authorities.

TECUMSEH, Neb.-Authorities are searching for a Nebraska inmate who did not return Thursday to the Community Corrections Center-Lincoln as scheduled from his work assignment.

Brandon Imes, 33, was serving a one-year sentence on charges from Gage County that include possession of a controlled substance, the Lincoln Journal Star&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/authorities-searching-for-missing-community-corrections-inmate/article_4f010f1e-cc65-5c50-8839-99bd37dcde12.html" target="_blank">reported</a>.

He had a tentative release date of Dec. 14.

The Department of Correctional Services said in a news release that his electronic monitoring device was disabled.
