LINCOLN, Neb. (NSP)-Troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol and Iowa State Patrol will be teaming up to keep travelers safe on both sides of the Missouri River this Thanksgiving.

NSP and ISP will conduct simultaneous patrol operations on many thoroughfares in northeast Nebraska and northwest Iowa as part of the effort. The high-visibility enforcement campaign will run from Wednesday, November 25, through Sunday, November 29.

“Nebraska State Troopers work tirelessly to keep roads safe, but the effort doesn’t stop at the Nebraska border,” said Captain Dain Hicks, Commander of Troop B, which encompasses northeast Nebraska. “Our partnership with the Iowa State Patrol is designed to maintain safe roads for all motorists traveling in the area this Thanksgiving.”

“The Iowa State Patrol is dedicated to reducing fatal and serious crashes by focusing our attention on the most common factors; excessive speed, impaired drivers, distracted driving, and seatbelt use,” said Lieutenant Mindy L. Coe, Iowa State Patrol – District 5. “As we team together, it is our hope that travelers will keep these factors in mind this Holiday season and arrive at their destinations safely.”

The campaign will include high-visibility patrols for both agencies, focused on major highways, such as Highways 20, 30, 81, and 275 in Nebraska and Highways 20 and 75, along with Interstate 29, in Iowa.&nbsp;

All motorists are urged to follow traffic safety laws during their travel, including following posted speed limits, avoiding distracted or impaired driving, and always wearing a seat belt. Motorists in either state can dial *55 or 800-525-5555 to reach the State Patrol Helpline for their respective state.

NSP, ISP team up for Thanksgiving highway safety campaign

The wet spring offered only a tiny window for planting, so when North Dakota farmer Paul Ivesdal fell ill with the coronavirus he knew the timing couldn’t be worse.

The 63-year-old man knew if he didn’t recover quickly and plant his crop of wheat, barley, canola and flax, it could mean an end to his decades of farming 2,300 acres just south of the Canadian border. But his condition deteriorated and, due to the bad weather, even his neighbors had no time to help.

“We didn’t get some crop in,” Ivesdal said. “It just got too late and started raining again.”

That’s when Farm Rescue stepped in. When Ivesdal was rushed to a hospital where he spent eight days on a ventilator, volunteers from the nonprofit planted his crops and made sure his farm would endure.

Ivesdal spent the summer in rehabilitation, regaining the strength and ability to walk, and he said he tires more easily than before, but that he plans to continue working the land.

“If we wouldn’t have got what we did, I don’t know if I would have kept on farming,” he said. “I’d like to farm for a couple more years but if it wouldn’t have been for them we might have just decided to quit.”

The founder of Farm Rescue, Bill Gross, is a North Dakota native who grew up on a farm, but he did not follow in his parents footsteps. Gross went to college, became a pilot and has flown Boeing 747s for United Parcel Service for 27 years.

But in 2005, he launched Farm Rescue, inspired by the 1980s farm crisis that forced his parents to sell land and most of their cattle. He traveled to farm shows where he set up a card table and asked for donations. With help from a John Deere dealership, he bought a tractor and that first year provided assistance for 10 farming families.

Over the years, individual donors and big companies, such as Deere &amp; Company and Chevrolet trucks, have stepped up, and Farm Rescue now has 1,000 volunteers nationwide.

“My heart never left the farming community,” Gross said.

The group has given assistance to about 700 farm families in the last 15 years in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. The group usually helps farmers beset by injuries, illness or natural disasters, but volunteers have this year been helping those taken out of commission by COVID-19.

“We’ve helped several farmers that have had COVID, including some who have been on a ventilator for three or four weeks and have survived and are back farming now,” Gross said.

The pandemic has rippled through the farm economy, leading to yet more bankruptcies.

“It’s affected farmers drastically. They were already at what I feel was the breaking point,” Gross said. “There’s been persistently low commodity prices, natural disasters and now COVID, and then when you add a major injury or illness to the challenges they already faced, it just can be overwhelming to them ... financially and emotionally.”

Farmers and ranchers can apply for help from Farm Rescue by filing out an online application, and some are referred to the organization by concerned friends. Gross said many farmers initially resist the offer of assistance.

“They’re prideful, hard-working people and typically don’t want to ask for help,” Gross said. “Sometimes it takes convincing only because, God bless them, they always feel that there is someone else that needs the help more than them.”

The group is planning a country music&nbsp;<a href="https://www.deere.com/en/our-company/news-and-announcements/newsroom/TheFarmMustGoOn/#howtowatch" target="_blank">benefit</a>&nbsp;concert on Dec. 9, to be streamed live on YouTube from the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville and featuring performers including Dustin Lynch, Maddie &amp; Tae, Mickey Guyton, Travis Denning and Tyler Farr. Viewers can watch the event for free, but all donations will go to Farm Rescue.

Farm Rescue shifts to help farmers sickened by coronavirus

Humanity on their annual Nacho Navidad fund-raising promotion. 



Each year Taco John’s
partners with a charity during its festive Nachos Navidad holiday
promotion with a portion of each Nachos Navidad purchase dedicated to
a local charity.&nbsp; The
desire to help LOCAL people in their communities was a predominant
driver in Taco John’s choosing North Platte Area Habitat for
Humanity as their charity partner for the promotion. Taco John’s
goal is two-fold: &nbsp;they want to raise funds to donate directly
to a worthwhile organization that touches so many people’s lives.
&nbsp;Second—and equally important—they hope this promotion will
aid in the community awareness of the efforts of North Platte Area
Habitat for Humanity and the impact in their communities.&nbsp;
NPAHFH has built 57 houses in North Platte over the last twenty-two
years providing safe, decent affordable shelter to low income
families and contributing in excess of $700,000 to the tax rolls.

Between December 1 and
December 25, Taco John’s, will donate a portion of each Nachos

The new building is the centerpiece of the new training facility and will house the football program's locker room, weight room and much of the space for training, academics and life skills.

The football team would occupy the new building by August 2023. That's a year later than in the original plan announced in September 2019.

As we approach holiday celebrations, the West Central District Health Department (WCDHD) is reporting more new confirmed cases of COVID-19.

WCHD reported 140 news cases in their jurisdiction since November 20.

As the cases continue to climb, Great Plains Health and other area hospitals are reporting near capacity levels. WCDHD data shows there are currently 42 people hospitalized. Great Plains Health says four people are currently on ventilators at their facility. The intensive care unit is about 96 percent full.

WCDHD reports 140 new COVID cases since Friday

Looking at the numbers, and seeing the state of his pastures, Jim Jenkins knew it was time for a change.

The Callaway rancher turned to prescribed fire after his efforts to remove eastern redcedar trees from his land mechanically proved too costly and ineffective at stopping the spread. However, using prescribed fire on a larger scale was unfamiliar.

“It was complex and I was a bit scared of it, because I’d just never been around burning,” Jenkins said.

The learning curve to use prescribed fire can be intimidating for landowners, said Brian Teeter, a prescribed fire coordinator with Pheasants Forever. Yet, every year, conservation professionals across the state help many landowners through the process. In recent years, Jenkins became one of them.

Jenkins knew the local Natural Resources Conservation Service office provided help for landowners looking to burn, and so several years ago, he sat down with Lisa Clarke McMillan, a soil conservationist at the agency, and signed up for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. The program provides incentive payments for brush management, deferred grazing and prescribed burning.

McMillan helped him develop a burn plan and visited his ranch to lay out where the burn would take place. Then, with McMillan’s guidance, Jenkins began prepping for the burn, creating a firebreak and cutting and strategically placing trees to facilitate a better burn.

“I would tell anybody that it’s important that you talk to people like Lisa,” Jenkins said. “If you can spend some time with them, it’s really helpful because they’ve been through literally hundreds of burns.”

Last fall, at McMillan’s recommendation, Jenkins attended a prescribed fire workshop led by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and Pheasants Forever, where he learned the basics of prescribed fire, including techniques, equipment and common terms.

At the workshop, Jenkins also networked with other landowners and resource professionals. Teeter was one of them and offered Jenkins the use of a trailer of equipment for his burn. He also got Jenkins in touch with several prescribed burn associations, groups of landowners who team up to conduct prescribed burns in their communities.

Last spring, using his new connections, Jenkins went to a couple of prescribed burns.

“I was impressed at how relatively easy the burn goes,” he said. “Once you have all the preparation work done and you’ve got a good crew and you’ve got the right conditions, the burn itself is almost anticlimactic.”

Jenkins hoped to conduct his burn in late February or early March, but ultimately decided to wait for better weather conditions and to finish more prep work. He’s looking forward to holding his first burn next spring.

“I can’t wait,” he said. “I don’t drink, but I might consider having some champagne or something.”

It takes time and effort to learn how to use prescribed fire, Jenkins said. However, “if you’re willing to invest the time, there are plenty of people out there willing to help you,” he said.

A number of organizations throughout the state assist landowners in implementing prescribed fire, including Game and Parks, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever, The Nature Conservancy, the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. They do it because prescribed fire is beneficial: It offers a boost to pasture productivity, is a valuable conservation tool, improves wildlife habitat, reduces wildfire risk and eliminates invasive species.

“If somebody wants to get a fire on the ground in the state right now, it’s a high priority of most every land management or conservation organization in the state,” Teeter said. “They’re never alone.”

Sustainable ranching: A landowner’s journey to using prescribed fire

Every
year since 1985, the Santa Cop program has helped less fortunate kids
in the North Platte and Lincoln County area, who may not have

North Platte 'Santa Cop' program seeking donations for area kids

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Nebraska remains near record levels, but the total has remained relatively stable over the past week.

The state said 971 people were hospitalized with the virus on Monday. Over the past week, that figure has gone up and down between a low of 961 last Wednesday and Friday's record of 987.

But more social distancing restrictions could still be triggered soon because more than 23% of the state's hospital beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients. Gov. Pete Ricketts has said that more restrictions will be imposed when that figure reaches 25% of the state's hospital beds.

Nebraska reported 1,860 new cases of the virus Monday to give the state 115,921 total. The state also reported 25 new deaths for a total of 934 since the pandemic began.

Nebraska had the seventh-highest rate of infection in the country on Monday. Over the past week, one out of every 135 people in the state was diagnosed with COVID-19.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska has risen over the past two weeks from 1,757.57 new cases per day on Nov. 9 to 2,271.43 new cases per day on Monday.

Nebraska virus hospitalizations remain near record levels

North Platte Community College will lose longtime psychology instructor Dr. Pete Johnson on December 31. Johnson has taught psychology for more than five decades – at NPCC, specifically, for the past 20 years.

“I’ve liked my time here,” Johnson said of his decision to retire. “The college has been good to me, but it’s time for something new.”

Psychology was not the profession Johnson originally intended to pursue. Instead, his plan upon graduating from Iowa City High School in 1952 was to follow in the steps of his grandfather - a medical missionary recognized by the emperor of the Ottoman Empire.

Johnson took classes at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minn. and at what is now the University of Nebraska at Kearney before enrolling in medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

“I only lasted about nine months in med school,” Johnson said. “I killed my cadaver in lab and decided I better not do that on a live person.”

He began teaching as an undergraduate lab instructor his senior year and, because of all the credits he already had, received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

“I then did one year of grad work but was more interested in watching the other chemists than in actually doing the chemistry, myself,” Johnson said.

That’s when he decided to switch to psychology.

“I was always interested in behavior, but had never completed a psych course,” Johnson said. “I always figured behavior, in some way, was a chemical process. Psychology is the one field that is the closest to what we actually live as a life. It fascinates me how complicated it is, and yet, how simple.”

Johnson ended up taking Intro to Psychology through the University of Illinois and was accepted into the school’s graduate program. He subsequently began teaching psychology as a grad student in 1966.

Johnson obtained a master’s degree in learning theory from the University of Illinois and later also earned a doctorate in behavior genetics. He was part of the university’s faculty, teaching child development, during the last four years that he was working toward a PhD.

“I continued teaching on and off over the years,” Johnson said. “I was also a consultant with the State of Illinois for a time in various roles related to psychology until I decided to go back for a second master’s degree. I earned a master’s in counseling from the Lincoln Christian Seminary in Lincoln, Ill. then began doing counseling.”

By 2000, Johnson was ready to return to teaching. He had three interview offers, one of which was from NPCC.

“The one at NPCC was the only one I went to,” Johnson said. “I’m a pretty serious Christian and I felt led to North Platte. I had been through the community around 1990 on my way to Oregon and had stopped and walked around the pond by the veterans memorial. During the walk, I had an overwhelming feeling that I was going to return to that place someday. The premonition always stuck with me.”

Johnson has enjoyed watching his NPCC students grow and succeed over the years. He knows of several who have gone on to receive doctorates of their own.

“Watching students accomplish things, no matter what field they go into, really tickles my fancy,” Johnson said. “I always encourage them to have faith and turn it into a purpose and meaning for their lives.”

His retirement doesn’t mean he will be less busy. Johnson’s looking forward to spending more time with his wife and to starting a ministry in North Platte with four of his friends. The group is calling the ministry, “God’s Five PRs.”

Longtime psychology instructor to retire from NPCC

LINCOLN, Neb. – Preliminary Nebraska deer check-in numbers indicate statewide harvest is down 3 percent compared to 2019 for the November firearm season. During the nine-day season, 42,024 deer were harvested, compared to 43,418 in 2019.

While the statewide trend was comparable to previous years, regions of the state varied. Deer harvest in southeast Nebraska was up 7% from 2019, while southwest Nebraska was down 10%. The northwest and northeast districts were down slightly at 2% to 3% each.

Mule deer buck harvest decreased 17%, with 5,990 taken, compared to 7,201 in 2019. Whitetail buck harvest was down slightly, with 23,814 taken compared to 24,301 in 2019. Antlerless mule deer harvest was down 15%, while antlerless white-tailed deer harvest increased 5% compared to 2019.

“Many factors can be related to the variations in numbers of checked deer,” said Luke Meduna, big game program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “Considering the increases in antlerless harvest in the southwest due to depredation complaints over the past few years, it’s not surprising harvest numbers would start trending downward at some point. In contrast, deer numbers in southeast Nebraska have been inching upward in recent years, and we’re seeing that in our harvest.”

One major change for the 2020 November firearm season was the use of Telecheck for all deer harvested. (Archery, muzzleloader and late firearm hunters have used Telecheck for nearly 10 years.) Due to COVID-19-related concerns, Game and Parks did not operate in-person check stations this year.

“Our hunters adapted quickly and did a great job at utilizing the Telecheck system,” Meduna said. Game and Parks plans to go back to in-person check stations for the 2021 November firearm season.

Archery season closes Dec. 31, while muzzleloader season is Dec. 1-31. The late antlerless season will run Jan. 1-15.

In contrast, deer numbers in southeast Nebraska have been inching upward in recent years, and we’re seeing that in our harvest.”One major change for the 2020 November firearm season was the use of Telecheck for all deer harvested. (Archery, muzzleloader and late firearm hunters have used Telecheck for nearly 10 years.) Due to COVID-19-related concerns, Game and Parks did not operate in-person check stations this year.“Our hunters adapted quickly and did a great job at utilizing the Telecheck system,” Meduna said. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A Nebraska prison inmate who had COVID-19 and other medical problems has died.

Nebraska prison inmate with COVID-19 dies

It’s fitting to set aside time each year to express gratitude to God and to one another for the many blessings we enjoy.&nbsp; In seasons of peace and plenty, as well as in times of war and loss, Americans have faithfully carried on Thanksgiving traditions.&nbsp; During challenging times, it’s even more important to remember the abundant blessings we enjoy as Americans.

In 2001, President George W. Bush issued a Thanksgiving proclamation a couple of months after the tragic September 11th&nbsp;terrorist attacks.&nbsp; The sentiments he expressed ring true this year in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

“During these extraordinary times, we find particular assurance from our Thanksgiving tradition, which reminds us that we, as a people and individually, always have reason to hope and trust in God, despite great adversity....In thankfulness and humility, we acknowledge, especially now, our dependence on One greater than ourselves. &nbsp;On this day of Thanksgiving, let our thanksgiving be revealed in the compassionate support we render to our fellow citizens who are grieving unimaginable loss; and let us reach out with care to those in need of food, shelter, and words of hope. &nbsp;May Almighty God, who is our refuge and our strength in this time of trouble, watch over our homeland, protect us, and grant us patience, resolve, and wisdom in all that is to come.”

As we finish 2020, let’s draw strength from the example of previous American generations who have overcome war, economic depression, disaster, and even pandemics.&nbsp; Let’s use our Nebraska grit to slow the spread of the virus as we get through this together.&nbsp;

Although Thanksgiving in 2020 may look different for you, there are still plenty of reasons to give thanks.&nbsp; Here are a few that come to mind for me. &nbsp;As Americans, we’re blessed to live in a time of relative peace.&nbsp; Even with the disruptions of the coronavirus, we enjoy prosperity that would have been unimaginable to the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock.&nbsp; Our Constitution allows for us to exercise many freedoms: religious freedom, freedom of the press, and the freedom of speech.&nbsp; Many military servicemen and women put their lives on the line every day to protect our Republic and these freedoms.&nbsp; We are grateful for their service and sacrifice.

Our free country and free enterprise system have given us great prosperity.&nbsp; In the midst of this pandemic, we’re blessed with technology to connect with loved ones living far away.&nbsp; We’re blessed to have excellent health care.&nbsp; We’re blessed to live in a scientifically advanced country with the capability of rapidly developing vaccines.

Despite the pandemic, Nebraska is expected to experience a bountiful harvest this year.&nbsp; Nebraska’s corn growers are forecasted to bring in a record of 1.82 billion bushels.&nbsp; Soybean production is up 5% from last year to about 300 million bushels.&nbsp; The sorghum crop of 12.4 million bushels is also projected to exceed last year’s numbers.&nbsp; Dry edible bean production is forecasted to be up 85% from 2019, and sugar beet production is expected be 38% higher than last year.

This year, we are especially grateful for our healthcare workers. &nbsp;Nurses, doctors, hospital staff, and public health leaders are on the front lines working long hours to help Nebraskans stay healthy during the pandemic.&nbsp; As we enter this holiday season, our hospitals are counting on Nebraskans to be smart in their social interactions to help slow the spread of coronavirus.&nbsp; We all need to do our part to help them by wearing a mask, washing our hands often, and watching our distance.&nbsp; Nebraskans are hard-working folks, and we don’t like to be on the sidelines.&nbsp; It’s critically important, however, for everyone to stay home when sick to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Our Local Health Departments tell us the virus is spreading at informal gatherings, usually in people’s homes.&nbsp; As you think about celebrating the holidays, please keep gatherings small and avoid the “Three Cs”, even in private settings.&nbsp; Avoid&nbsp;crowded places&nbsp;where you can’t practice social distancing.&nbsp; Avoid&nbsp;close contacts&nbsp;where you’re within six feet of someone for 15 minutes or more.&nbsp; And avoid&nbsp;confined spaces&nbsp;with poor ventilation.&nbsp; Using these tools is the best way to support our healthcare workers and protect our hospitals.

North Platte Community College’s Student Senate is collecting toys for area children in need this holiday season.

Toys will be accepted through Dec. 2 then will be turned over to the Flat Rock chapter of Guardians of the Children for distribution.

“This is a great opportunity for students and campuses to give back to the community that supports them,” said Jason Osmotherly, Student Senate advisor.

Toys for children ages 2-13 will be accepted. It is asked that they be new, but they don’t have to be wrapped.

Donations can be placed in collection boxes set up in the McDonald-Belton fireplace area and at the Student Activities Office on NPCC’s South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd. There is also a collection box in the Activities Center on the NPCC North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive.

Nebraska reported one of the lowest numbers of new virus cases this month on Sunday, but the number of people hospitalized with the virus remains high and continues to strain hospital capacity in the state.

The potential restrictions would limit indoor gatherings to 10 people, outdoor gatherings to 25 and limit bars to carry-out and delivery services.

"It could be as early as this week," Ricketts said. "It could be before Thanksgiving that we could see that threshold go into place."

The state reported 1,032 new virus cases Sunday to give Nebraska a total of 114,061 cases since the pandemic began. On Sunday, the seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in the state was 2,313.57.

State health department data shows 976 people were being treated for COVID-19 in hospitals, which is slightly below the record of 987 set on Friday. Patients with COVID-19 are occupying 23% of the state's hospital beds, approaching the threshold of 25% that will trigger more social distancing restrictions.

Nebraska had the seventh-highest rate of infection in the nation on Sunday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Over the past week, one person in every 121 people in the state was diagnosed with COVID-19.

The state reported 909 deaths linked to the virus, which is up from Thursday's 854.

Ricketts warns of imminent restrictions amid hospitalizations

BRADY, Neb.-A man wanted for a parole violation and who may possibly be connected to the death of a 71-year-old man in Colorado may be in Nebraska.

The body of 71-year-old Randall Schubert was found on November 5 in Longmont, Colorado.

Police in Longmont have identified 36-year-old Edward Herbert Hoid as a person of interest in the case.

Longmont police say Hoid had been living in Lyons, Colorado, but they say he may currently be residing in Brady, Nebraska.

Hoid is described as a white male, 6' tall, weighing 180 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes.

Police say Hoid should be considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Anyone who sees Hoid should contact local law enforcement immediately.&nbsp;

Hoid is currently wanted on a parole violation and has not been charged with any crime in the death of Schubert.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The death of a North Platte man whose body was found in an area canal in June has been ruled a homicide.According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), deputies received a report of a body floating in the Nebraska Public Power District canal just to the west of Wagon Trail Road between Hershey and North Platte on June 8, 2020.Rescue workers along with the Lincoln County Dive Team and North Platte Fire and Rescue recovered the body of 68-year-old Nicholas Legas. Legas' vehicle was recovered several miles upstream near Hershey/Dickens Road.On November 23, LCSO said a forensic pathologist in Gibbon has ruled Legas' death a homicide.Investigators say Legas died of blunt force trauma and strangulation.The investigation is ongoing. LCSO did not release any further information, including whether or not they have any suspects in Legas' death.This is a developing story.
