LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska has reported another 198 novel coronavirus cases, increasing the total for the pandemic to 19,660.

The state Department of Health and Human Services dashboard showed Saturday that the number of cases had increased 1% in the previous day. The state reported 284 COVID-19-related deaths, up two.

The health department said 14,200 people, or about 72% of those infected, have recovered. It said 1,365 people have been hospitalized, but only 111 of those hospitalizations still are active.

Nearly 63% of the people who've been hospitalized were 55 or older, and the same group accounts for 90% of the state's reported COVID-19-related deaths. the department said.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up in two to three weeks. But for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause severe illness or death.

The health department said 42% of the state's hospital beds, 50% of its intensive care unit beds and 80% of its ventilator beds still are available.

About 55% of the state's total reported cases were in Douglas, Lancaster and Dakota counties.

HOLDREGE, Neb. (AP) - Two family members on their way to a recent wedding in central Nebraska stopped at a two-vehicle accident to help the victims before making it to the nuptials with minutes to spare.

Jodi Damrow, the mother of the bride, said her rendering aid in a long gown wasn't anything special because "I've done it for so long,"&nbsp;<a href="https://www.omaha.com/news/holdrege-mom-just-makes-it-to-daughters-wedding-im-sorry-im-late-i-had-to/article_c367e7c9-e27d-53c6-ac81-8854c29da49f.html" target="_blank">The Omaha World-Herald reported.</a>&nbsp;She's a veteran emergency room nurse in Holdrege, about 190 miles (306 kilometers) southwest of Omaha.

The wedding of her daughter, Hailey Krull, was June 27 at Harlan County Lake south of Holdrege. Damrow showed up with not a hair out of place and told her daughter, "I'm sorry I'm late. I had to save a life.''

Damrow then walked her daughter down the aisle in place of her late father. She said it was "nerve-wracking to let her go."

At the scene of the accident, Damrow had called paramedics, opened the injured woman's airway and summoned a medical helicopter.

Another daughter, Sadie Johnson, a physician's assistant, also stopped to help. She then rushed home to get three young children ready and served as matron of honor at the wedding.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska officials are watching for new outbreaks of the coronavirus that have been seen in other states and "certainly will keep all options open" to try to protect public health, Gov. Pete Ricketts said Thursday.

Ricketts made the comments as the state continued to see new, confirmed cases and deaths. Nebraska reported 142 new cases of the virus and six new deaths, according to the state's online tracking portal.

That brings the total number of known Nebraska cases to 19,452 since the pandemic began, according to the tracker. Of that number, 282 people have died and 14,022 have recovered.

Public and private health officials have tested 184,354 residents in Nebraska so far.

So far, the virus hasn't overwhelmed Nebraska's hospitals as many initially feared. The state dashboard shows 41% of Nebraska's hospital beds, 48% of its intensive care unit beds and 80% of its ventilators are available for use.

Nebraska officials watching virus cases as 6 more die

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man was seriously injured in an accident just south of the city early Friday morning.

On July 3, 2020 around 2:13 a.m., deputies were informed of an injury accident on South Buffalo Road, near Joan Street, just south of North Platte. It was reported that a vehicle had left the roadway and rolled several times ejecting the driver.

Deputies and North Plate Fire / Rescue arrived on the scene and found the lone male driver outside the vehicle. The driver had serious injuries and was transported to Great Plains Health. 

An investigation showed the vehicle was southbound on Buffalo Road and left the roadway and began to roll through a barb wire fence. During the accident the driver was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver was identified as 25-year-old Marcus Vigil of North Platte, NE. Drugs and Alcohol were not suspected. Mr. Vigil did not appear to be wearing his seat-belt.

LINCOLN, Neb.-Governor Pete Ricketts rescinded Executive Order 20-05 amending the due date for Nebraskans to renew a driver license or complete vehicle titling and registration requirements. &nbsp;Acknowledging the need to ensure residents have enough time to update their credentials, rather than the original 30-day notice period, the Governor has introduced a deadline of August 31st. &nbsp;This doubles the amount of notice originally discussed to allow residents to become compliant.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska voters will likely get to weigh in on measures to legalize medical marijuana and casino gambling after advocates for both causes announced Thursday that they have enough signatures to put them on the November ballot.

Organizers of the Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana campaign said they've gathered 182,000 signatures. To qualify for the ballot, the campaign needed to turn in more than 121,000 valid signatures, representing more than 10% of the voters in the state. Campaign officials also needed to collect signatures from at least 5% of voters in at least 38 Nebraska counties.

"Today represents a huge step forward for thousands of Nebraskans who deserve compassion," said state Sen. Anna Wishart, of Lincoln, who co-chaired the campaign committee. "We are confident that we've met the requirements for ballot qualification, and after seeing the outpouring of support for our petition, we're even more confident that Nebraska's voters will approve this initiative in November."

Meanwhile, the pro-gambling group Keep the Money in Nebraska announced that it will submit 475,000 signatures for its three petitions to allow casino gambling at horse-racing tracks.

One petition seeks to amend the state constitution to allow gambling, one would change state law to authorize and regulate the casinos, and the third would direct the tax revenue into a property tax credit fund and toward local governments. The constitutional amendment proposal garnered more than 205,000 signatures, while the two other gambling-related measures each received more than 135,000.

Supporters argue that Nebraska loses hundreds of millions of dollars a year to Iowa, which has numerous casinos set up along the Nebraska border.

"It's time to stop looking foolish and keep the money in Nebraska," said Bob Moser, president of the Nebraska Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, a leading backer of the petition drive.

Supporters of medical marijuana launched the campaign after Nebraska lawmakers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/5a4b3e4527ce41748bb52ea8fb7e0077" target="_blank">repeatedly rejected</a>&nbsp;similar measures to legalize and regulate the drug for people with medical conditions. Campaign officials gathered far more signatures than they needed because some are likely to be declared invalid.

Barry Rubin, a consultant who led the signature-gathering effort for the marijuana measure, said the petition campaign was a "herculean effort" because the campaign was hindered by the coronavirus pandemic.

The pandemic led to the cancellation of large public gatherings and prompted several ballot campaigns to temporarily halt their efforts. One petition drive that sought to lower property taxes&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/d4b2f68624870d42ad73365cc682d3b1" target="_blank">suspended its campaign</a>&nbsp;in April, blaming the pandemic.

Some leading conservatives in the state, including Gov. Pete Ricketts and former University of Nebraska athletics director Tom Osborne, have voiced strong opposition to legalizing marijuana for medicinal use before federal regulators have approved it.

Ricketts also staunchly opposes the ballot measure to legalize gambling as well, and on Thursday he said he may use his own money to try to block the measures. Ricketts is a multimillionaire former business executive who has pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into previous ballot measure campaigns, including a successful effort to reinstate the death penalty in 2016 after lawmakers overrode his veto and abolished it.

"We'll continue to talk to Nebraskans about the harm that will be caused by both of these ballot issues," he said at his weekly news conference.

All of the petitions will go to the Nebraska secretary of state's office, which will validate signatures and confirm which petition drives have qualified for the ballot. That announcement is expected in mid-August.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska has so far avoided the resurgence of new coronavirus cases that have plagued other states around the country, but is still seeing new confirmed cases - and deaths - every day.

The state's&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraska.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/4213f719a45647bc873ffb58783ffef3" target="_blank">virus tracking site&nbsp;</a>shows Nebraska recorded 133 new confirmed cases of the virus on Wednesday, bringing the state's total to 19,310. It also shows that since the outbreak began, 276 people in the state have died from COVID-19.

Of Nebraska's positive cases, more than 13,800 have recovered, the state's site said.

State figures also show hospitals' ability to handle the cases reported so far remaining steady, with 40% of Nebraska's hospital beds, 48% of its intensive care beds and 79% of its ventilators still available Thursday.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. climbed to a new high of more than 50,000 per day on Thursday, with the infection curve rising in 40 out of 50 states, according to John Hopkins University. The surge has been blamed in part on Americans not wearing masks or following other social distancing rules as states lifted their lockdowns over the past few weeks.

No spike, but Nebraska sees COVID-19 cases, deaths creep up

TORRINGTON, Wyo. (AP) — A fireworks show exploded as it was being set up by firefighters in Wyoming but they turned around and fought the flames. 

The mishap happened inside a building Wednesday as eight Torrington Volunteer Fire Department members loaded fireworks into mortar tubes for an upcoming Fourth of July show.

 Fire department officials say one of the fireworks exploded and set off the whole display. 

The firefighters fled but came back to fight the flames. 

KTWO Radio reports a firefighter with minor injuries went to a hospital. 

Officials asked the Wyoming State Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate.

LINCOLN Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has been awarded a $300,000 grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust for the Treehouse Classroom and Interactive Stream: Engaging Nebraskans in Conservation Education project.

The Treehouse Classroom and Interactive Stream will engage Nebraskans in environmental education and promote conservation of natural resources, continuing the success of the new Schramm Education Center at Schramm Park State Recreation Area (SRA).

This project will design and build the Treehouse Classroom on the bluffs overlooking spring-fed canyon ponds at Schramm. The classroom will feature treetop forest views, equipment for scientific investigations and a year-round location for conservation education. Additionally, the Interactive Stream will be designed within the footprint of the existing canyon ponds. Two of the four current ponds will remain, supporting fish and aquatic wildlife; two ponds will be converted into a cool-water stream designed for students to explore and learn.

This initiative is part of the Outdoor Venture Parks complex, which encompasses Eugene T. Mahoney and Platte River state parks, as well as Schramm Park and Louisville SRAs. Reaching more than a million people within 60 miles, this complex is critical to cultivate knowledge and appreciation of natural resources through science-based learning and outdoor recreation.

This is the first year of award for Game and Parks with a potential of $1,325,000 in second year funding.

The Nebraska Legislature created the Nebraska Environmental Trust in 1992. Using revenue from the Nebraska Lottery, the Trust has provided more than $328 million in grants to more than 2,300 projects across the state. Any citizens, organizations, communities, farmers or businesses can apply for funding to protect habitat, improve water quality and establish recycling programs in Nebraska.

The Trust works to preserve, protect and restore natural resources for future generations.

Game and Parks receives NET grant for Treehouse Classroom and Interactive Stream project

Unleaded gas is down 56 cents compared to a year ago with the national average at $2.17/gallon.&nbsp;

This year, four states advanced legislation to strengthen distracted driving laws including Idaho, Indiana, Virginia and South Dakota. 

 The South Dakota law, which became effective July 1, carries a $100 fine.  It makes texting while driving a primary offense for adult drivers.  Texting laws banning all drivers from messaging have been passed in 48 states.

AAA: Nebraska 1 of only 2 states with secondary enforcement texting law

LINCOLN, Neb.-Over the Independence Day weekend, Nebraska State Troopers will be working overtime to keep Nebraska roads safe. The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) joins agencies throughout the state to focus on drunk driving enforcement this weekend.

“Like many aspects of daily life lately, Independence Day celebrations may happen in different ways this year,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “However you plan to celebrate American independence, all people should include a sober driver in those plans.”

NSP’s Independence Day impaired driving enforcement is made possible thanks in part to a grant for $17,700 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office. The enforcement effort, which runs from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5, will include high-visibility patrols and collaboration with local law enforcement agencies.

Alcohol-related crashes have been on the decline in Nebraska in recent years. Alcohol was a factor in 21% of roadways fatalities in Nebraska in 2019, which was the lowest percentage in the last decade.

“Several factors have played into the positive trend regarding drunk driving in Nebraska,” said Colonel Bolduc. “From active enforcement efforts, to engaging awareness and safety programs, to the increase in ride-share options, all of us have a role to play in keeping our roads safe. Nebraska troopers watching for impaired drivers over Independence Day weekend

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota’s new ‘move over’ driving law has gone into effect. It increased the minimum fine for violators from $122.50 to $270. 

If a driver fails to move over on the roadway and causes a crash with an emergency vehicle, the offense is now a Class 1 misdemeanor. 

 Another provision requires drivers to move over for vehicles that use an authorized blue light while working along a highway. 

Moving over still applies for emergency vehicle with flashing amber lights. And, all traffic must still stop for emergency vehicles with flashing red lights.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Fine for drivers failing to move over increase in SD

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska voters will likely get the chance to vote on a measure to legalize medical marijuana, based on the number of petition signatures that campaign organizers will submit to state officials on Thursday.

Organizers of the Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana campaign said they've gathered 182,000 signatures from all 93 counties to allow the drug for medicinal use.

To qualify for the ballot, the campaign needed to turn in more than 121,000 valid signatures, representing more than 10% of the voters in the state. Campaign officials also needed to collect signatures from at least 5% of voters in at least 38 Nebraska counties.

Barry Rubin, a consultant who led the signature-gathering effort, said the petition campaign was a "herculean effort" because the campaign was hindered by the coronavirus pandemic.

The pandemic forced the cancellation of large public gatherings and forced several ballot campaigns to temporarily halt their efforts. One petition drive that sought to lower property taxes&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/d4b2f68624870d42ad73365cc682d3b1" target="_blank">suspended its campaign</a>&nbsp;in April, blaming the pandemic.

A separate campaign to legalize casino gambling at Nebraska horse-racing tracks is also expected to present signatures to state officials Thursday to place that issue on the ballot.

The pro-casino group, Keep the Money in Nebraska, has scheduled an 11 a.m. news conference at the Capitol to discuss its effort. The campaign was backed by Ho-Chunk Inc., the economic development arm of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, and the Nebraska Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, a horse-racing advocacy group.

KEARNEY, Neb.-Kearney Police continue to investigate the recent string of vehicle vandalism's.&nbsp;

Police are asking if you have information about this crime, that you call Buffalo County Crimestoppers at (308) 237-3424. Police say all tips are anonymous and may also be eligible for a cash reward for information that leads to the arrest or conviction of those responsible.

To date, police say there have been over 100 reports of damage to vehicles in the last 24 hours.

The suspect vehicle is believed to be a 1999-2006 Chevy/GMC Silverado shortbox pickup with chrome running boards and possibly chrome trim.

Police say they have received video from several different residents, however they will still accept more video recorded between the hours of 3am-6am on June 30th of the suspect vehicle.

Kearney police investigating after 100 vehicles are vandalized in 24 hours

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Nebraskaland Days has announced that Luke Combs will be coming to North Platte in 2021.

Combs was originally slated to be a headliner at this year's concert series which was canceled due to coronavirus concerns.

Nebraskaland Days reschedules Luke Combs concert for 2021

ALDA, Neb.-A Wood River man was killed after his vehicle was struck by another vehicle.

On Wednesday at 3:16 pm, deputies responded to a two-vehicle injury accident just South of Guenther Rd on Alda Rd, South of Alda. 

The Hall County Sheriff's Office says Alexander Schneberger of Wood River was in the South bound lanes experiencing vehicle problems in a 1989 Ford Ranger pick-up when Toby Clayton of Holdrege who was also South bound came upon the vehicle as he came over a curved hill and struck the Ranger in the road, causing it to roll into the West ditch. 

Schneberger was transported by ambulance to St Francis where he was later pronounced dead.

Wood River man killed in Hall County crash

LINCOLN, Neb.-School districts across the state must work collaboratively with their teachers and other school staff to ensure a safe and successful school year, according to the Nebraska State Education Association (NSEA).

“Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, seeking input from school staff through local education associations is more important than ever before,” said Jenni Benson, president of the 28,000-member NSEA. “NSEA has been meeting with members and has been in contact with multiple groups to produce guidelines for reopening schools that are best for Nebraska students, families and school staff.”

Significant study, outreach and discussion led to recommendations from NSEA’s Continuous Learning and School Safety Committee that are being released this week, according to Benson.

Tim Royers chairs NSEA’s Continuous Learning and School Safety Committee. That committee’s recommendations prioritize health and safety for all students and staff, as well as long-term strategies for student learning and educational equity.&nbsp;

“Our goal was to determine the best practices for opening schools safely and supporting distance learning as needed,” said Royers, a teacher at Millard West High School. “We know that educators will&nbsp; return to school soon and many are concerned about their safety and the safety of their students amid the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp; We strongly encourage every local education association to use this information to engage school district administration about the safe re-opening of classrooms.”

Royers said it is critical that educators have a seat at the table and are part of the decision-making process.

On Monday, Dr. Bob Rauner, president at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/partnershiphealthylincoln/?eid=ARADY2heXXLJdCAIjyWExriIyTvFvNJZOOjlbM6d9wxp9L_i1TpQE2XNOkzpFICqKJgEZzKa5axVd9YH&amp;timeline_context_item_type=intro_card_work&amp;timeline_context_item_source=100006507002210&amp;fref=tag" target="_blank">Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln</a>&nbsp;and a member of the Lincoln Public Schools Board of Education, participated in a Facebook Live with Benson and Royers to talk about the recommendations. Also participating were NSEA Executive Director Maddie Fennell and NSEA Director of Advocacy Trish Guinan. The event reached more than 24,000 people and generated more than 400 comments and questions.

Rauner stressed the importance of wearing masks to help prevent the spread of the virus.

“I asked our medical community about wearing masks to help prevent the spread of this virus and – in one week – 124 physicians signed on to a list supporting wearing masks.&nbsp; I’ve never gotten doctors to agree to anything – let alone that fast. There is really no debate from the medical community on the benefits. Wearing masks in schools is a good idea, obviously with limitations.”

Since early March, Rauner has regularly been posting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdYVcGJDGEdyBOUp3G7fGhQ" target="_blank">YouTube videos</a>&nbsp;to provide information and answer questions about COVID-19.

“This guidance was crafted in response to educator concerns about returning to school and the most effective ways to ensure student success, whether it is in-person classroom instruction or remote learning,” said Fennell. “We stand ready to support the needs of students, educators and communities. The input of educators is critical to the planning of safely reopening Nebraska schools.”

NSEA is also a member of the Nebraska Child Health and Education Alliance. NCHEA, which also has representation from the Nebraska Association of School Boards, Children’s Hospital, the University of Nebraska Medical Center and others, is also working to provide health safety measure guidance for school districts, according to Fennell.

LINCOLN, Neb. – Applications for paddlefish snagging permits are being accepted by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission through July 14.

Drawing results will be available by July 20. Any permits remaining following the drawing will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. Central time.

Paddlefish snagging permits accepted through July 14

KEARNEY, Neb.-Police in Kearney say they have arrested a suspect in the armed robbery of a pizza deliver driver.

According to police, 26-year-old Jaimee Williams, Sr. has been arrested in connection with the armed robbery of a pizza delivery man which occurred on June 24 at 6 Boa Drive in Kearney.  

Police say Williams was arrested at approximately 11:00 p.m. last night without incident on suspicion of robbery and use of a weapon to commit a felony.  

Williams is being held at the Buffalo County Jail.  

The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office assisted in this investigation.

At approximately 8:26 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, officers of the Kearney Police Department were called to the area of #6 Boa Drive in Northwest Kearney to investigate an armed robbery that had just occurred.  A 32-year-old man said that as he was attempting to deliver pizza, the customer would not answer the door.  As the delivery man returned to his vehicle, an unknown black male subject approached him with a handgun and demanded that he give him the money.  The male suspect took approximately $60 in cash from the pizza delivery man and the suspect was last observed running South from the parking lot. 

The suspect is described as being a black male, between the ages of twenty and twenty-five, approximately 5’9” – 5’11” tall.  At the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing a white muscle shirt, dark colored pants, and he was wearing a dark colored baseball cap.  The suspect also had a dark colored bandana on his face that he had pulled up over his mouth.  He had long hair to the middle of his back in a dreadlock style.  The suspect was armed with a multi-colored handgun. 

The Kearney Police Department is continuing to investigate this case and is asking for the public’s help. Arrest made in armed robbery of pizza delivery driver in Kearney

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Business leaders say the economy has begun to recover as businesses reopened in the past month in nine Midwest and Plains states, but it remains weaker than before the coronavirus outbreak began, according to a monthly survey released Wednesday.

The overall index for the region jumped into positive territory at 50.3 in June from May's 43.5. The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth. A score below 50 suggests decline.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said the region's overall index will have to remain above 50 for many months before the economy reaches the level it was at before states began imposing restrictions because of the coronavirus.

The confidence index improved to 65.3 in June from May's 56.6 showing that business leaders expect the economy to continue improving over the next six months.

The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Job losses continue in the region. The employment index declined to 38.9 in June from May's 40.

Businesses were paying higher wholesale prices over the past month. The wholesale price index increased to 59.7 in June from May's 48.6.

The overall index ranges between 0 and 100. Growth neutral is 50, and a figure greater than 50 indicates growth in that factor over the next three to six months. A figure below 50 indicates decline.

Arkansas: The state's overall index rose to 50.9 from May's 43.7. Components of the June index were: new orders at 58.7, production or sales at 55.2, delivery lead time at 47.4, inventories at 54.4, and employment at 38.8. "Since the onset of COVID-19, Arkansas has lost 88,000 jobs, or almost 7% of its employment. Our surveys point to a flattening of employment with only slight job gains in the months ahead," Goss said.

Iowa: The overall index once again slumped below growth neutral. However, the reading climbed to a weak 47.1 from 41.9 in May. Components of the index were: new orders at 50.2, production. or sales at 56.1, delivery lead time at 43.2, employment at 35.7, and inventories at 50.2. Iowa has lost 161,000 jobs, or approximately 10%, of its employment since the outbreak began earlier this year, Goss said.
