NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A man wanted by law enforcement after he ran from deputies trying to assist him when his vehicle broke down has been arrested.

The Nebraska State Patrol tweeted Monday morning that Shawn Erpelding has been arrested by Dawson County deputies.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (NSP)-Just after 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to assist the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office near mile marker 231 on Interstate 80, between Cozad and Lexington.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office had stopped to assist a stranded motor vehicle. A male then ran from the scene towards the Platte River. The male was identified as Shawn Erpelding. Erpelding is believed to be armed.

Erpelding is 5’11” and 145 lbs with a shaved head.&nbsp;Erpelding was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.&nbsp;

Do not approach Erpelding if you see him. Law enforcement asks you to contact the Dawson County Sheriff’s office at 911 or 308-324-3011 or the Nebraska State Patrol at 308-535-8047.

LINCOLN, Neb. – A 60-year-old Kenesaw woman was injured and hospitalized following a collision of two personal watercraft July 4 at Harlan County Reservoir.

The woman and a 33-year-old male relative from Kearney each was operating personal watercraft. As they accelerated to leave Patterson Harbor on the lake’s south shore, the female was struck from behind by the male operator, throwing her into the water.

The female was transported to Phelps County Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.

The male, who was not injured, was cited for No Boater Safety Education. Boater education is required of all boat operators, including those of personal watercraft, born after Dec. 31, 1985.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission conservation officers are investigating the incident, which was reported at 2:30 p.m. Alcohol is not suspected to be a contributing factor.

Game and Parks has the following safety reminders for boaters:

• Be aware of the presence of other boats, swimmers, skiers and tubers, as they could be coming from any direction.

• Maintain a safe distance between your vessel and other vessels and operate only at safe speeds for the conditions.

• All vessels must operate at a maximum of 5 mph with no wake within 30 yards of any other vessel, harbor, landing pier, marina, fishing pier, anchorage or bathing beach.

• Make sure that your vessel has all of the required safety equipment. Personal flotation devices are required for every passenger and must be worn at all times by personal watercraft operators and any youth under the age of 13. Have the proper equipment necessary to towing skiers and tubers.

• Know the rules on the water body you are boating.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Another Nebraska state prisons employee has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said.

A news release from the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said the staffer is employed at the Lincoln Correctional Center and is self-isolating at home.

The department said it will notify those who work and live in the Lincoln facility. Officials ask that anyone who may have had close contact with the staff member to self-quarantine until they are cleared by a medical provider.

The latest case brings to 21 the number of state prisons staffers who have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Twenty have since recovered, the department said.

On Sunday, Nebraska reported 167 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state's total to 19,827 cases since the outbreak began. The number of deaths linked to the coronavirus in Nebraska remained at 284.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness.

Another Nebraska prisons staffer positive for COVID-19

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The North Platte Police Department is investigating the death of a man at the Lincoln County Jail.

July 5, 2020, at 8:34 p.m., the North Platte 911 Center received a
call requesting an ambulance at the Lincoln County Detention Center,
302 North Jeffers Street.

 North Platte Fire and Rescue were dispatched for
a male subject reportedly having seizures in his cell. Police say, despite life-saving
efforts by Lincoln County Correctional Staff and North Platte EMS, 35-year-old Leslie Reel was pronounced dead at the scene. 

 The
investigation is on-going and an autopsy is pending.  The case will
be presented to a Grand Jury, as is the case with all in-custody
deaths. 

The North Platte Police Department is investigating the
incident.

Health officials issued a hazardous air quality warning for people in much of eastern Nebraska on Saturday night into Sunday morning after lingering smoke from fireworks become trapped near the ground by stagnant air flow pattern.

In Lincoln, a 34-year-old Exeter man was seriously injured and hospitalized after a firework exploded in his hands Friday night at Branched Oak State Recreation area, according to a release from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Investigators said the man was trying to discharge a mortar-style firework while holding it near his chest and sustained injuries to his chest, arms and hands when it exploded. Officials said he was last reported in serious but stable condition.

In Omaha, police received nearly 1,900 fireworks complaint calls in the days before and after the Fourth of July, when fireworks are legal to sell and use. That was a more than 30% increase from fireworks complaints received last year, police said. Of those calls, police wrote 14 citations for violation of the fireworks ordinance.

Those who have had their fill of the celebratory explosives can take any leftover fireworks next weekend to two collection sites in Omaha. The Omaha police and fire departments will be holding a Firework and Gun Amnesty Day on Saturday at Seymour Smith Park and the Omaha Fire Station on North 103rd Street. The event allows people to drop off unused, unwanted or illegal fireworks and gun, with no questions asked.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A 43-year-old North Platte man was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly physically and sexually assaulted a woman.

According to North Platte police, officers responded to a residence in the 500 block of South Chestnut Street at around 12:50 a.m. on July 4 after receiving numerous 911 hang-up calls from that location.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a female. 

 Police say the female stated that she and Isac McCurry, got into an argument. 

Police say the woman alleged that, during the argument, McCurry jumped on top of her and began hitting her in the head, pulling her hair, and slapping her.  The female indicated that McCurry also choked her during this time, according to police.

Police say the woman advised that she tried leaving the residence but McCurry grabbed her and brought her back into the house.  She told police she was able to go into another room but was later followed by McCurry, and that he then sexually assaulted her.

 According to police, officers established probable cause to arrest McCurry but they were not able to locate him at this time.  

Later in the day, at 11:22 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop near 4th and Ash Streets for a traffic violation. 

 Officers made contact with McCurry who was the driver of the vehicle and placed him under arrest.

 McCurry was transported to the Lincoln County Jail on suspicion of 1st-degree sexual assault, 3rd-degree domestic assault, and strangulation.&nbsp;

Nebraska Education Improvement Fund,&nbsp;$5,587,442; Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund,&nbsp;$5,587,442; Nebraska State Fair Support and Improvement Fund,&nbsp;$1,255,605; and Compulsive Gamblers Assistance Fund,&nbsp;$125,561.

Amendment 4 passed by Nebraska voters in November of 2004 established the following distribution formula: Education as directed by the Legislature (44.5 percent) - currently distributed to the Nebraska Education Improvement Fund; Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund (44.5 percent); Nebraska State Fair (10 percent); and the Compulsive Gamblers Assistance Fund (1 percent, plus the first $500,000 in fund proceeds each fiscal year). The funds' respective totals to date are:

Nebraska Education Improvement Fund,&nbsp;$77,207,943; Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund,&nbsp;$333,899,265; Nebraska State Fair Support and Improvement Fund,&nbsp;$55,491,578; and Compulsive Gamblers Assistance Fund,&nbsp;$17,678,913.

OMAHA, Neb.-Long before COVID19 came on the scene a team from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine were in talks with long-term care facilities across the state about ways to improve their infection control programs.

Today that team is seeing the fruits of their work.

“The pandemic has hit long-term care facilities particularly hard,” said Muhammad Salman Ashraf, MBBS, associate professor of internal medicine at the UNMC and medical director of the&nbsp;<a href="https://icap.nebraskamed.com/" target="_blank">Nebraska Infection Control Assessment and Promotion Program (Nebraska ICAP)</a>.

“If you compare Nebraska to other states you would see that less than one percent of the nursing home population in our state has succumbed to COVID19, where more than 10 percent of the nursing home population have died in other states. We believe the lower numbers we see in our state are a direct result of the impressive infection control measures and practices of the nursing homes and the educational efforts of the Nebraska ICAP,” Dr. Ashraf said.

Nebraska ICAP offers a no cost, peer-to-peer infection control assessments and recommendations based on site visits, consultations and online training.

The team includes experienced infection preventionists, infectious disease trained medical directors and professional educators.

The program was launched in 2015 through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control provided to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

The goal of the grant is to assess infection control activities in a variety of health care facilities across the state, including critical access hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient and surgical centers, and dialysis centers.

Nebraska ICAP also partners with the Nebraska Antimicrobial Stewardship Assessment and Promotion Program to help sites develop programs for reducing unnecessary antibiotic use with the goal of preventing antibiotic resistance.

Since the start of the program, the team has conducted site visits at more than 155 locations and provided ongoing support, where needed. In addition, they have collaborated with Nebraska Infection Control Network, a local not-for-profit educational organization, to develop a certificate training program for infection preventionists working in long-term care facilities. To date they have trained 81 nursing home infection preventionists through this program.

Dr. Ashraf said the team found a number of recurring gaps during their visits, including suboptimal hand hygiene practices; a lack of auditing and feedback programs focused on improving infection control practices; and a lack of competency-based infection control training for staff.

Once the gaps were discovered, the Nebraska ICAP team were able to provide the resources the facilities needed to make the necessary changes.

“These facilities are doing their best, often with limited resources. Our job is to help them efficiently use those resources in a way that allows them to continue to ensure the safety of their residents and patients,” Dr. Ashraf said.

Because of the work of the Nebraska ICAP, Dr. Ashraf said that when the pandemic did hit, everyone already was engaged in conversations before the first case was identified in Nebraska.

“This program is meant to help these facilities prevent any kind of infection transmission, whether that is just one individual infection transmitted to one other person, or a wide-spread outbreak like this pandemic, you are ready at all times and you don’t just change your routine,” he said. “Once you have a program in place then you can deal with a pandemic like we face today.”

A male then ran from the scene towards the Platte River. The male was identified as Shawn Erpelding. Erpelding is believed to be armed.Erpelding is 5’11” and 145 lbs with a shaved head.&nbsp;Erpelding was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.&nbsp;Do not approach Erpelding if you see him. The state Department of Health and Human Services dashboard showed Saturday that the number of cases had increased 1% in the previous day. The state reported 284 COVID-19-related deaths, up two.

The health department said 14,200 people, or about 72% of those infected, have recovered. It said 1,365 people have been hospitalized, but only 111 of those hospitalizations still are active.

Nearly 63% of the people who've been hospitalized were 55 or older, and the same group accounts for 90% of the state's reported COVID-19-related deaths. the department said.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up in two to three weeks. But for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause severe illness or death.

The health department said 42% of the state's hospital beds, 50% of its intensive care unit beds and 80% of its ventilator beds still are available.

About 55% of the state's total reported cases were in Douglas, Lancaster and Dakota counties.

LINCOLN – Governor Pete Ricketts issued the following statement in observance of Independence Day:

“We’re blessed to live in the greatest nation the world has ever seen.&nbsp; On the Fourth of July, we’re reminded of the freedoms we enjoy and the sacrifices that have sustained them. &nbsp;This Independence Day will look different, without the usual parades and large community celebrations. &nbsp;However, the significance of the day remains as powerful as ever.&nbsp; This weekend, let’s reflect on the words of President Ronald Reagan: ‘Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. &nbsp;We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. &nbsp;It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.’”

HOLDREGE, Neb. (AP) - Two family members on their way to a recent wedding in central Nebraska stopped at a two-vehicle accident to help the victims before making it to the nuptials with minutes to spare.

Jodi Damrow, the mother of the bride, said her rendering aid in a long gown wasn't anything special because "I've done it for so long,"&nbsp;<a href="https://www.omaha.com/news/holdrege-mom-just-makes-it-to-daughters-wedding-im-sorry-im-late-i-had-to/article_c367e7c9-e27d-53c6-ac81-8854c29da49f.html" target="_blank">The Omaha World-Herald reported.</a>&nbsp;She's a veteran emergency room nurse in Holdrege, about 190 miles (306 kilometers) southwest of Omaha.

The wedding of her daughter, Hailey Krull, was June 27 at Harlan County Lake south of Holdrege. Damrow showed up with not a hair out of place and told her daughter, "I'm sorry I'm late. I had to save a life.''

Damrow then walked her daughter down the aisle in place of her late father. She said it was "nerve-wracking to let her go."

At the scene of the accident, Damrow had called paramedics, opened the injured woman's airway and summoned a medical helicopter.

Another daughter, Sadie Johnson, a physician's assistant, also stopped to help. She then rushed home to get three young children ready and served as matron of honor at the wedding.

Krull said the rest of the night went as planned

Family members help crash victims on way to Nebraska wedding

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska officials are watching for new outbreaks of the coronavirus that have been seen in other states and "certainly will keep all options open" to try to protect public health, Gov. Pete Ricketts said Thursday.

Ricketts made the comments as the state continued to see new, confirmed cases and deaths. Nebraska reported 142 new cases of the virus and six new deaths, according to the state's online tracking portal.

That brings the total number of known Nebraska cases to 19,452 since the pandemic began, according to the tracker. Of that number, 282 people have died and 14,022 have recovered.

Public and private health officials have tested 184,354 residents in Nebraska so far.

So far, the virus hasn't overwhelmed Nebraska's hospitals as many initially feared. The state dashboard shows 41% of Nebraska's hospital beds, 48% of its intensive care unit beds and 80% of its ventilators are available for use.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness.

Nebraska officials watching virus cases as 6 more die

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man was seriously injured in an accident just south of the city early Friday morning.

On July 3, 2020 around 2:13 a.m., deputies were informed of an injury accident on South Buffalo Road, near Joan Street, just south of North Platte. It was reported that a vehicle had left the roadway and rolled several times ejecting the driver.

Deputies and North Plate Fire / Rescue arrived on the scene and found the lone male driver outside the vehicle. The driver had serious injuries and was transported to Great Plains Health. 

An investigation showed the vehicle was southbound on Buffalo Road and left the roadway and began to roll through a barb wire fence. During the accident the driver was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver was identified as 25-year-old Marcus Vigil of North Platte, NE. Drugs and Alcohol were not suspected. Mr. Vigil did not appear to be wearing his seat-belt.

North Platte man seriously injured in South Buffalo Rd. accident

LINCOLN, Neb.-Governor Pete Ricketts rescinded Executive Order 20-05 amending the due date for Nebraskans to renew a driver license or complete vehicle titling and registration requirements. &nbsp;Acknowledging the need to ensure residents have enough time to update their credentials, rather than the original 30-day notice period, the Governor has introduced a deadline of August 31st. &nbsp;This doubles the amount of notice originally discussed to allow residents to become compliant.
