NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man has been arrested after he allegedly fired a gun from his vehicle on Newberry Access.

According to North Platte police, on June 24, at 11:27 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Interstate 80 and Newberry Access for a male that was reportedly firing a gun out of a vehicle. 

 Upon arrival, police say officers located the vehicle in the parking lot of 3200 South Newberry. 

 Officers made contact with two subjects in the vehicle, including the passenger, 21-year-old Nicholas Wright. 

According to police, officers spoke with witnesses who advised that Wright had produced a handgun, and began firing several shots in the air, out the window of the vehicle. 

 Officers investigated and subsequently located a handgun in the vehicle, as well as spent shell casings in the roadway. 

 Wright was placed under arrest on suspicion of discharging a firearm from the highway, carrying a concealed weapon (2nd Offense), and use of a weapon to commit a felony. 

 Wright was incarcerated at the Lincoln County Jail.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

According to police, on June 24, 2020, at 8:48 a.m., Officers responded to the 1100 Block of West 11th Street on the report of a disturbance. 

Police say officers learned that the suspect had departed the area in a vehicle which was quickly located and stopped in the 1600 Block of West 9th. 

 Officers arrived on scene and made contact with two victims. 

 Both victims advised that 39-year-old Nichol Lytle, entered the home without permission and began assaulting one of the victims.  The victim alleged that she was scratched and punched several times by Lytle. 

Police say the second victim told officers they attempted to break up the first altercation when Lytle began assaulting them.  Both victims advised that during the second assault, Lytle grabbed a hammer and began striking the second victim with it, before fleeing the scene. 

According to police, one of the victims also left on foot, but again encountered Lytle where she was again assaulted. 

 Officers say they observed injuries and evidence supporting the victim's stories.  

Lytle was placed under arrest on suspicion of 2nd-degree domestic assault, burglary, and 3rd-degree assault.  Lytle was incarcerated at the Lincoln County Jail.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The Prairie Arts Center in North Platte is hosting their Kids Art Camps and classes starting in July this year.&nbsp; 

This will be the fourth&nbsp;year PAC has offered the classes to area children ages 5-14 years old.&nbsp; The one and three day classes and camps offer kids a variety of projects in different mediums and methods.&nbsp; 

Each year, around 50- 75 kids attend.&nbsp; &nbsp;

During the classes, local artists teach the variety of classes that range from painting, textile, sculpture and 3-D projects to resist methods and artist focused projects.&nbsp; 

" We look forward to kids classes every year.&nbsp; We try to offer unique&nbsp;projects that focus on various artists and their styles and then try to incorporate various methods and mediums that the kids may not have tried before.&nbsp; That's what these classes are all about - exploration and creation," said PAC Executive Director Holly Carlini .

ORLANDO, Fla.– This summer, AAA forecasts Americans will take 700 million trips based on economic indicators and state re-openings. That number is down nearly 15% compared to last July through September and is the first decline in summer travel since 2009. AAA booking trends show Americans are making travel plans, though cautiously and more spur of the moment.   

“Americans will get out and explore this summer though they’re taking a ‘wait and see approach’ when it comes to booking and are likely to book more long weekend getaways than extended vacations,” said Paula Twidale, AAA’s senior vice president of Travel. “When they do venture out, travelers will take to the road with 683 million car trips to satisfy their wanderlust.”

Car trips reign supreme accounting for 97% of the favored mode of transportation. Car trips will also see the smallest decrease in travel volume of just 3% year-over-year. Air travel will be off by about 74%, while rail, cruise ship and bus travel will slide by 86%. Were it not for the pandemic, AAA would be projecting 857 million trips during the third quarter, a 3.6% increase over last year. By this analysis, the pandemic wiped out nearly 150 million person-trips this summer.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and the others sent a letter to congressional leaders urging them to ensure police officer safety as Democrats demand changes in police tactics and accountability.

In the letter, the group acknowledges the “tragic and preventable&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/GeorgeFloyd">death of George Floyd at</a>&nbsp;the hands of four Minneapolis police officers” that has driven global protests over police killings of Black people.

But the lawyers say a few bad officers don’t warrant calls to “defund the police.” The attorneys general also pointed to 2016 attacks that left officers dead&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/ba1a8dacffce4a48b5aaca09690ccac2">in Dallas</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/0eacdf733e2c45369d766fadc28af195">Baton Rouge, Louisiana</a>, as evidence of the dangers that police face.

“Many law-enforcement agencies have instituted policies, re-examined training and protocols, and rightly worked with their local communities to build trust and encourage problem solving,” Paxton said in a statement Wednesday.

LEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) - A judge raised bail Wednesday to $1 million for a resident physician who is charged with fatally shooting her husband in front of their two children while stopped along a Nebraska highway.

Kathleen Jourdan, 31, of Omaha, initially was held without bond on charges of second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon in the death of her husband, 35-year-old Joshua Jourdan, the Omaha World-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://www.omaha.com/news/crime/judge-sets-bail-at-1-million-for-omaha-resident-physician-accused-of-killing-husband/article_98396862-5409-5a2e-a817-cb0cf88c3653.html" target="_blank">reports.&nbsp;</a>Judge Jeffrey Wightman said at a hearing Wednesday that she must surrender her passport and remain in Nebraska if she is able to post bond by paying 10%, or $100,000, of the amount.

Jourdan, a resident physician in the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency Program, has been placed on administrative leave. She graduated from St. George's University School of Medicine, which is in Grenada, in late 2018.

She was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/8755a81c77f8edca6eff369e4670d4b3" target="_blank">arrested&nbsp;</a>June 17 along Interstate 80 near Cozad after the shooting. According to court records, investigators said the couple got into an argument while driving back from Scottsbluff, where the family was in the process of moving.

During the argument, Joshua pulled over and called a friend in Georgia to mediate. Kathleen said Joshua gave her a "look" during the call while raising his arm. Kathleen, who said she feared for herself and children, pulled a handgun out of the center console of the pickup and fired two shots into her husband's chest, court records say.

The couple's two sons, who were in the backseat, weren't hurt.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A recalled bagged salad distributed to a dozen Midwestern states by grocery stores has sickened 122 people in seven states and sent 19 to the hospital, the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/cyclosporiasis/outbreaks/2020/" target="_blank">salad</a>&nbsp;distributed by Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco and Aldi grocery stores is contaminated with cyclospora, a parasite that can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue.

The salad mix containing carrots, red cabbage, and iceberg lettuce is packaged as Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salads, Jewel-Osco Signature Farms Brand Garden Salads and ALDI Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salads. All have been recalled and consumers are advised not to eat them.

The CDC said the highest number of illnesses is reported in Iowa with 54. Illinois has 30. Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin also have reported illnesses, which were first reported on May 11 and have been as recent as June 15.

The salads were sold in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The CDC said it continues to investigate and is working to determine if other recent cases of cyclospora infection are linked to contaminated ingredients in these bagged salad mixes.

CURTIS, Neb. (AP) - Frontier County authorities have arrested a man on drug charges after a college student was found dead at a home in Curtis.

Maxwell Allen, 23, of McCook, was arrested June 16 on charges including distribution of a controlled substance after Frontier County deputies and other first-responders were called to a home and found the body of Jamie Spratlen, 22, of Lincoln. Allen was at the home.

Spratlen was in her second year of veterinary studies at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

Deputy County Attorney Whitney Lindstedt said officials are awaiting autopsy results for Spratlen and then will decide if there are grounds for more charges.

Allen is being held in the Frontier County Jail.

KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney’s combined 2020 Spring and Summer Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 31. To support COVID-19 directed health response, it is being planned as an outdoor event on Foster Field at Cope Stadium.

The backup location, if needed because of inclement weather, will be the UNK Health and Sports Center. The event will begin at 10 a.m.

In support of current safety protocol and to meet facility capacity requirements, in-person attendance will be limited to no more than three invited guests per graduate.

A livestream will be provided for an overflow crowd and additional guests beyond the three-per-student limit. Guests who are unable to attend in person may watch the ceremony via the livestream or view the recording later via UNK’s website.

Students participating in the ceremony will be required to wear traditional commencement attire, and current protocol requires face coverings and physical distancing for participating students, personnel and guests. Individuals will be asked to monitor themselves for symptoms and stay at home if they are feeling ill.

The commencement website,&nbsp;<a href="http://unk.edu/about/commencement">unk.edu/about/commencement</a>, will provide additional details, including parking directives, entrance locations and other information as the event gets closer.

On March 31, due to the expanding health crisis,&nbsp;<a href="http://unknews.unk.edu/2020/03/31/unk-may-commencement-combined-with-july-exercises/">UNK announced</a>&nbsp;the postponement of spring commencement and plans to combine the ceremony with its 2020 summer exercises. A printed spring program and video were produced in recognition of the spring graduates, and those graduates were invited to participate in the summer ceremony.

“Commencement is one of the most important days in our life, and we made sure to stay focused on that by honoring as many traditions and wishes for these families’ celebrations as was possible, given the health and safety measures,” said Kelly Bartling, vice chancellor for enrollment management and marketing.

Bartling said the decision to limit guests is based on UNK’s strong desire to offer a meaningful, memorable and enjoyable commencement experience for graduates and their guests and, at the same time, observe current safety guidelines and regulations in their strictest sense.

“We plan to stay flexible regarding a change of venue from Foster Field to the Health and Sports Center for weather-related issues. A definitive decision will be made by July 29 and communicated accordingly,” Bartling said.

Graduates are asked to continually check their email, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/about/commencement/">unk.edu/commencement</a>&nbsp;website and social media for updates and specific final details such as designated entrances, and graduate check-in, line-up and seating. Commencement rehearsal will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 30.

“Graduates and their families and friends have been so patient and understanding through this spring and summer as we have worked to make decisions and plans. This will certainly be a day for us all to remember.”

Bartling said planners expect more than 500 graduates to participate.

UNK plans Cope Stadium outdoor commencement for July 31

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust for the Rainwater Basin Wetland Management project.

Game and Parks is a partner with the Rainwater Basin Joint Venture and is committed to providing optimal habitat on private and public lands for migrating waterfowl in the Rainwater Basin. This will be accomplished by increasing wetland management to reduce invasive plant species and increase desirable food-producing plants.

Prescribed management will address dense stands of invasive reed canarygrass, river bulrush, cattail, trees, and common reed because they provide limited habitat for wetland dependent migratory birds and outcompete desirable plants. Contractors will disk, apply herbicide, complete prescribed burns and grazing improvements, and remove trees.

This is the first year of award for Game and Parks with a potential for second- and third-year funding totaling $75,000 each year, respectively.

The Rainwater Basin provides habitat for approximately 8.6 million waterfowl, 500,000 shorebirds, and the federally endangered whooping crane. Over the past eight years improved management has increased landscape carrying capacity for waterfowl by 14% and increased recreational opportunities. When habitat values are maximized, fewer acres need to be targeted for future enrollment to achieve habitat objectives.

The Nebraska Legislature created the Nebraska Environmental Trust in 1992. Using revenue from the Nebraska Lottery, the Trust has provided more than $328 million in grants to more than 2,300 projects across the state. Any citizens, organizations, communities, farmers or businesses can apply for funding to protect habitat, improve water quality and establish recycling programs in Nebraska.

The Trust works to preserve, protect and restore natural resources for future generations.

Aksarben announces postponement of 2020 Aksarben Ball

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska confirmed another 147 new coronavirus cases and five more deaths on Monday as the state further loosened its social-distancing restrictions.

The state has now seen a total of 17,957 coronavirus cases and 249 deaths since the pandemic began, according to Nebraska's online tracking portal. So far, 158,827 residents have been tested.

New rules that went into effect Monday allow bars, restaurants and other venues to allow more people inside. Restaurants and bars are now allowed to use their full capacity as long as they practice social distancing and ensure additional hygiene practices.

Nebraska's hospital capacity appears to be stable, with 45% of hospital beds, 48% of intensive care unit beds and 80% of ventilators available for patients.

Alliance man dies after weekend stabbing

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska will extend its unemployment benefits for the first time in nearly 40 years in response to the mass layoffs triggered by the coronavirus pandemic, state officials announced Monday.

The Nebraska Department of Labor said it will provide up to an additional 13 weeks for eligible recipients who have exhausted their regular or pandemic unemployment benefits.

The extended benefits were triggered when the state unemployment rate hit 5.2% during the week of June 14. Other states are offering similar extended benefits based on their unemployment rate.

Labor department officials said they'll notify recipients who are eligible and will issue application instructions. The weekly benefit amount is the same as what people received for regular unemployment.

Typically, recipients can get no more than 26 weeks of unemployment benefits during a 12-month period.

The last time the state's extended benefits program was triggered was in January 1981.

LINCOLN – With a donation from the Cabela’s/Bass Pro Shop and the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation, this year’s Take ’em Fishing Challenge just got a little more exciting: One lucky participant will win a Bass Tracker Classic XL boat.

This is the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s second year offering the challenge, which encourages experienced anglers to take a pledge to go fishing with a beginner or someone who hasn’t fished in several years. Anglers who take a photo of themselves taking someone new fishing can enter an online drawing for dozens of prizes, including the boat, valued at nearly $11,000; two $500 Scheels gift cards, a fishing kayak, or a two-night stay in a Nebraska state park. All participants will be featured on the agency’s Facebook page and will receive a Take ’em Fishing decal.

Though the challenge officially started in May, due to the current health situation, the contest has been extended through Oct. 31, 2020, to increase people’s chances to participate by fishing one of Nebraska’s many diverse waterbodies.

“We’re excited to offer a great grand prize Bass Tracker Boat for the second year in a row,” Director Jim Douglas said. “We give a special thanks to Cabela’s/Bass Pro Shop and the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation, and look forward to seeing the many memories made by our Take ’em Fishing participants.”

New Take ’em Fishing grand prize: Bass Tracker Classic

LINCOLN, Neb. – As part of a national effort to reduce the number of accidents and deaths related to boating under the influence (BUI), the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will participate July 3-5 in Operation Dry Water.

While Operation Dry Water is a year-round BUI awareness and enforcement campaign, that effort will be heightened by Game and Parks’ Law Enforcement Division officers July 3-5 at waters across the state.

Alcohol use while boating is one of the leading factors in boater deaths. In Nebraska, it is unlawful to operate a motorboat with a blood alcohol level content of .08 percent or greater. Doing so constitutes BUI, which carries penalties such as vessel impoundment, fines, jail time and loss of boating privileges.

"The Commission encourages boaters to enjoy the boating season with friends and family, and we also encourage them do it in a safe and responsible way,” said Craig Stover, administrator for the Law Enforcement Division. “Drinking alcohol while boating can have serious, even deadly consequences, and our goal is to make sure everyone is enjoying their time on the water and staying safe.”

The Commission also recommends everyone have all required boating safety equipment on board, including life jackets or U.S. Coast Guard-approved floatation devices, lights, fire extinguisher, horn, bailing bucket and an orange flag if pulling skiers and tubers.

Children age 12 and younger and anyone riding or operating a personal watercraft or being pulled on a towable must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Anyone operating a motorboat or personal watercraft must be at least 14 years old. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska has confirmed another 103 coronavirus cases on Sunday but no new deaths, according to state health officials.

The new cases brings the total known number to 17,810 in the state since the pandemic began. So far, officials have confirmed 244 virus-related deaths.

On Sunday, state corrections officials said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/05e2f4872153ec59e6c8d33de714500d" target="_blank">another prisoner had tested positive</a>&nbsp;for the virus. So far, a total of eight inmates and 20 prison employees have tested positive for COVID-19.

Nebraska's hospitals report that 44% of their beds, 51% of intensive care beds and 81% of the ventilators statewide remain available.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness.
