I have what I call my paying job. But, for more than 30 years, I’ve also had another career. I’m an emergency medical technician, or EMT, and firefighter. Currently, I’m the rescue chief and treasurer for Sutherland Fire and Rescue in Sutherland, Neb.

Just like so many other fire and rescue squads throughout Nebraska, we’re an all-volunteer unit. In many parts of this state, it’s a small squad of dedicated volunteers that keeps you, your loved ones, and neighbors, safe.

That’s why I’m asking you and our state legislature to support LB 761 to fund the Simulation in Motion-Nebraska (SIM-NE) program, which brings the latest technology and training to the rural providers who answer the toughest calls.

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be ready when those calls come. We may be unpaid volunteers doing this on top of our day jobs. But, the communities we serve, the emergencies we see, demand that we handle ourselves like full-time pros.

SIM-NE, established by the University of Nebraska Medical Center, brings customized trucks with the latest technology, simulation equipment and training techniques from UNMC to rural EMS providers and critical access hospitals – for free.

In Sutherland, Neb., we’re fortunate to have done the training twice.

Having the “sims” come right to you in your community, having that real-life training and having an expert give you feedback at the drop of a dime – it’s invaluable.

But, today, after two years of training thousands of Nebraska responders, the funding for the SIM-NE trucks, originally supported by a grant, is about to run out.

That’s why we need LB 761, which would provide a 50-cent motor vehicle license fee to be appropriated to the SIM-NE program, to keep these trucks on the road. We need to keep bringing the best and latest training to emergency providers in all parts of our state.

Before SIM-NE, we did what we could. We sometimes practice with skills nights at the firehouse. A couple of years ago, we had the high school drama kids act in a training exercise.

Or, we send people to conferences, which are expensive. Plus motel room.

But, SIM-NE brings lifelike, high-fidelity mannequins that cry, talk, do belly sounds, increase heartrate and drop blood pressure. These mannequins react when we do, so we can tell when we’re right or wrong. Our whole team can practice together, instead of just those that could make a conference.

We can run through scenarios we might see only every couple years.

My colleagues at SIM-NE tell me that since 2017, they have:

I first joined the rescue squad because the community of Cambridge, Neb., where I was living then, and where I had grown up, was begging for EMTs.

I had little kids at home. I don’t know how many times I was at a school program and my beeper would go off, I’d have to run out for a call. Someone would yell, “Kristi, we got your kids, don’t worry about it!” I didn’t even look back to see who had said it. I knew they would be OK.

That’s what it’s like in a small town.

I could answer the call because my community was there for me.

Please, state senators: let’s be there for our rural responders, by continuing to give them the best training, through SIM-NE.

ALLIANCE, Neb. (AP) - A highway collision in the Nebraska Panhandle has claimed the life of one driver and seriously injured another.

The collision occurred around 6 p.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 385, just northwest of Alliance. A northbound car crossed the center line and rammed into an oncoming pickup truck, the Nebraska State Patrol said Tuesday.

The car driver died at the scene, the patrol said. He's been identified as Bruce Engel, 68, who lived in Hemingford. The pickup driver was taken to Box Butte General Hospital before being taken to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. He's been identified as Levi Clouse, 21, also of Hemingford.

It's not clear what caused the car to cross into the pickup's path, the patrol said.

Former housing authority director gets probation, jail time

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska lawmakers took a new step Monday to try to help survivors of human trafficking but stopped short of putting any new money into the initiative.

Lawmakers advanced a bill, 46-0, to create a competitive grant program for groups that provide services to human trafficking victims. The bill doesn't come with any state dollars, however, and grants would only be awarded "if public or private funding is made available for this purpose."

The bill by Sen. Lou Ann Linehan, of Omaha, is the latest move in a multi-year effort to clamp down on human trafficking in Nebraska.

The measure would require the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to create an office and an advisory board to oversee services for human trafficking victims.

Lawmakers will also consider a separate measure later this year that would eliminate a state sales tax exemption for escort services, which the bill's sponsor says is aimed at human traffickers.

Two more votes are required in the Legislature before the measure goes to Gov. Pete Ricketts.

Nebraska bill to help human trafficking victims advances

More than half of American workers (55%) failed to use all their time off last year. That’s a stockpile of 768 million unused vacation days in just one year, of which 236 million were forfeited completely.

“Last year was a solid recruiting year for NSP and we’re looking to hire and train even more troopers this year,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Applicants for Camp 63 can go through the entire process to graduate as Nebraska State Troopers by the end of this year.”

The 63rd&nbsp;Basic Recruit Camp will start in July, with graduation scheduled for December. Recruits earn $21.00 per hour during the 22 weeks of training at the NSP Training Academy. Upon graduation, troopers start with an annual salary of $47,944 and benefits including medical insurance, life insurance, paid vacation, sick leave, and full retirement benefits.

Applicants can also request a specific location for their first duty station assignment, which will be considered based on current staffing needs of the agency. Applicants will be informed of the decision on a duty station request by the time a conditional offer is extended to the candidate.

The Nebraska State Patrol offers a career of vast opportunity for those with a desire to serve the public. After graduation, each newly badged trooper begins his or her career on the road, working in the NSP Patrol Division. After two years in the Patrol Division, troopers can then apply for other positions within NSP, such as Carrier Enforcement, Investigative Services, SWAT, Police Service Dog Division, and many more.

Applicants must be a United States citizen and at least 21 years of age by December 18, 2020, when they take the oath of office. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED equivalence. OMAHA, NE –  The FBI Omaha
Field Office is warning the public to be on alert for a phone scam
that spoofs, or fraudulently displays, the FBI’s telephone number
on the victim’s caller ID. The scammer impersonates a government
official and uses intimidation tactics, such as the threat of arrest,
to demand payment of money. These claims are false and the calls are
NOT from the FBI.


The FBI Omaha Field Office has
seen its main number, (402) 493-8688, spoofed in this manner
recently, as well as the numbers of its Resident Agencies, or
satellite offices, throughout Nebraska and Iowa. Citizens nationwide
have been targeted.


The FBI defines this type of
scam as government impersonation fraud, in which criminals
impersonate government officials in an attempt to collect money. In
some cases, the intended target may be told there is a federal
warrant for their arrest, which would be dismissed by the court in
exchange for immediate payment to the caller.


“The public should be aware
that the FBI will not call or email people to demand money or
threaten arrest,” said Special Agent in Charge Kristi K. Johnson. 


The FBI strongly encourages
anyone contacted by a caller who says they are with the FBI or any
government agency to verify the information with their local FBI
Field Office or the government agency in question. Contact
information for all 56 FBI field offices can be found at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.fbi.gov/" target="_blank">www.fbi.gov</a>.


According to the Internet
Crimes Complaint Center (IC3, more than 12,000 people nationwide
have reported being victims of government impersonation scams in
2019, with losses totaling over $112,000,000. Anyone who feels they
were the victim of this or any other online scam should report the
incident immediately using the IC3 website at www.ic3.gov.

LEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) - A driver involved in a central Nebraska collision that killed three people in her car is scheduled to be sentenced on April 3 in Lexington.

According to court records, Angelique Kampmann, 21, of Platte Center, pleaded no contest Friday to three counts of attempted vehicular homicide and one count of driving under the influence, causing serious injury. Prosecutors had reduced the charges and dropped one in return for her pleas.

Investigators have said Kampmann was driving south in the early morning hours of Oct. 16, 2018, when she didn't halt at a stop sign and her car collided with an eastbound sport utility vehicle on U.S. Highway 30 near Elm Creek. Three passengers in the car - 18-year-old Ziera Nickerson, of Kearney; 27-year-old Karli Michael, of Pontiac, Illinois; and 20-year-old Donald Anderson, of Overton - all died at the scene. A fourth passenger, 18-year-old Ashley Kemp, of Kearney, was injured.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) - A Scottsbluff man is accused of taking more than $250,000 from his aunt.

Scotts Bluff County Court records say Barry Neal, 48, is charged with felony abuse of a vulnerable adult. His attorney didn't immediately return a call Monday from The Associated Press. Neal's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Station&nbsp;<a href="https://kneb.com/regional-news/scottsbluff-man-charged-with-felony-abuse-of-vulnerable-adult/" target="_blank">KNEB</a>&nbsp;reported that Neal offered to help his aunt when her 91-year-old father died in 2017 and she was named the personal representative of the estate. Neal also obtained a power of attorney to handle her financial matters.

Investigators later discovered that nearly all of the $272,000 received from the estate had been depleted. They found it had been spent at various places, including auto dealers and parts stores, hotels, and on airline tickets and even nail salons. Investigators also found a November 2017 cash withdrawal from the estate for $85,000, which is the same amount Neal used to buy his home in Scottsbluff.

The estate attorney told investigators that the aunt was entitled to all of the estate.

Governor names 3 students to Nebraska college system board

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has announced the hiring of an Omaha attorney as its new legal director.

Adam Sipple will lead the state ACLU's legal program, replacing Amy Miller, who resigned in November. Before joining the ACLU, Sipple had spent 20 years as a civil rights and criminal defense litigator for the firm of Johnson &amp; Mock of Omaha.

Sipple said he's looking forward to handling complex litigation for the civil rights group, which in recent years has tackled criminal justice and prison reform, reproductive issues, LGBTQ equality and racial justice, among other things.

"Throughout my career, the most satisfying moments have followed vindication of a client's fundamental constitutional rights against overreaching state actors," Sipple said.

ACLU Nebraska Executive Director Danielle Conrad said she expects Sipple's addition to boost the program.

Nebraska Outdoor Calendar-February 2020

The Lincoln County Sherriff's Office (LCSO) is seeking information regarding a burglary that occurred earlier this week.

According to LCSO, on January 21, 2020, at approximately 1:45 p.m. deputies were dispatched to a burglary of a steel shop building south of Highway 30 by Offalons Ponds near Sutherland. 

After a preliminary investigation, it was found that the shop was forcibly entered and a Makita brand saw, a bundle of copper wire, and an electric fuel pump from a diesel tank had been taken from the property. 

Footprints were discovered at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska's unemployment rate of 3.1% didn't change in December, marking the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/5b43941552accce99e5b38aa7b892366" target="_blank">sixth</a>&nbsp;straight month it has held steady, officials said Friday.

The preliminary December rate was three-tenths of a point higher than the adjusted December 2018 rate of 2.8%, according to a Nebraska Labor Department report.

The Nebraska rate also was below December's national preliminary rate of 3.5%, which was unchanged from November and down four-tenths of a point from the December 2018 rate of 3.9%.

"2019 was full of historically high employment," said state Labor Commissioner John Albin. "The number of workers employed in Nebraska's labor force has been above 1 million since March of 2019."

Non-farm employment dropped a tenth of a point, to 1,042,933 in December, but that figure was up by 15,649 over the year, the report said.

Private industries with the most growth year over year were leisure and hospitality, up 3,801; professional and business services, up 3,475; and education and health, up 3,176. Month to month, the largest gains were seen in leisure and hospitality, up 1,108; education and health, up 681; and trade, transportation and utilities, up 678.

The preliminary Omaha-area unemployment rate for December remained 2.7%, the same rate as November and October. The December 2018 figure was 2.8%.

Lincoln's preliminary rate fell last month to 2.4% from November's 2.6%. The figure in December 2018 was 2.4%.

Grand Island's preliminary rate rose a tenth to hit 2.9% in December. The year-ago December figure also was 2.9%, the report said.

Unemployment rates for Grand Island, Lincoln and Omaha have not been seasonally adjusted, so they cannot be directly compared with the state unemployment rate.

Gov. Ricketts announces appointments to boards and comissions

LINCOLN, Neb. – A temporary closure on camping reservations at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area and Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area will be lifted on Friday, Jan. 31 at 9 a.m. Central Time.

Reservations previously had been on hold for existing campsites during the development of the Lake McConaughy Visitor Management Plan. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission voted to delay consideration of the proposed Lake McConaughy Visitor Management Plan at its meeting Jan. 22 in Lincoln while staff works with a McConaughy-area advisory group to come up with revisions to the plan for presentation at the Commission’s March 20 meeting.

LINCOLN, Neb. – Anglers can learn about the status of Nebraska fisheries by attending one of eight public informational meetings this winter.

Attendees will hear a presentation by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission on current and future projects, aquatic invasive species, regulations, and a fishing forecast. Staff then will answer fisheries-related questions.
