Isabelle McCandless, age 91 formerly of Merna, NE, passed away August 6, 2024, at the Brookestone View in Broken Bow.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Anselmo, NE with Father Jim Hunt celebrant. The burial will follow in the Arnold Cemetery at Arnold, NE. A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 11th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow, then from 5:00 to 6:00 PM at the St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Anselmo. Isabelle Kathryn McCandless was born November 30, 1932, at home, south of Arnold, NE, to Oscar and Mary (Thinnes) Brestel. She grew up with her 5 brothers and attended country school at Pine Canyon and Spring Creek, graduating from Callaway High School in 1950.&nbsp;

She attended Nebraska Teachers College at Kearney and taught at several country schools. While staying with host family Roy and Ruby McCandless and teaching at Pleasant Hill School, she met their son, Billy McCandless, who often helped her grade papers. They were married on December 28, 1955. To this union 6 daughters were born.

They moved to Ortello Valley where they farmed until Billy’s tragic death in an airplane accident while hunting on December 4, 1966. Isabelle continued to milk cows, raise chickens, and tend to a garden. In the fall of 1971, the family moved to Merna, where she worked at Anselmo-Merna High School until her retirement in 1996. Isabelle raised all 6 girls on her own with the help of her family and her faith.

Isabelle was involved in Catholic Daughters and Altar Society, Sewing for Babies and Quilts of Valor. She volunteered with Hospice and the Broken Bow Hospital Rummage Sale. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and sewing and her beautiful work will continue to be enjoyed by so many. Isabelle enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and was a wonderful piano player.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Billy, his parents, Roy and Ruby; brothers, Bob, Gene and Roger Brestel, sister Elizabeth Mae Brestel; Grandson Cole Arnold and Great Granddaughter Leyna Gilligan. Also preceding her were sisters-in-law Mary Jane Brestel and Darla Brestel, brothers-in-law, Eldon, Nick and Terry Troy McCandless.

She is survived by her loving daughters: BJ (Rod) Baxter, Pamela (Ben) Gilligan, Louise (Tyke) Arnold, Cynthia (Paul) Christen, Julie (Jerry) McCaslin and Peggy (Jeff) Steele. Also surviving Isabelle are brothers, Ken Brestel, Dick (Nadine) Brestel, sisters-in-law Joyce Brestel, Shirley Brestel, Connie McCandless and Joleen Stewart. Isabelle is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren, 24 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Isabelle’s home was always filled with joy, humor, great food, sewing and sports. She enjoyed every moment and took life as it came. Her hugs were calming, reassuring and tight. Think of her laugh and smile when you hear a great joke or a kind quote and if you catch a great baseball, football or volleyball game or watch an old movie. Isabelle touched the lives of hundreds who feel honored to have known her. Her faith, love, strength, courage and the legacy she leaves behind is unforgettable. Remember all of the little things that made Isabelle one-of-a-kind, and she’ll live on as we do.&nbsp;

Isabelle McCandless (1932-2024)

Ernest Willis Harris was born August 22, 1937, in Quincy, California, to David and Charlotte (Ingrahm) Harris. He died August 5, 2024, at his home in Cozad. As a young child, he was raised in Washington State with his younger sister Carole Jean. &nbsp;Due to health problems, his family moved back to Nebraska, and he spent several years ranching, haying and working with his dad across the western end of the state.

Following high school graduation, he met Carole Cone and six weeks later they were married. They were blessed with 58 years of marriage filled with loving one another in sickness and in health, good times and bad, until death parted them in 2013. They were blessed with three children: Ernest Willis, Susan Jean, and Thomas Lee.

Willis spent his career doing many different jobs including buying and rebuilding old houses in Ansley, owning and running a motel in North Platte, and making and selling concrete lawn ornaments. In 1994, Willis and Carole retired to Cozad, and became active members of their community. He spent his life being generous with his time, talents and monetary gifts. In his later years he spent much of his time serving with the maintenance crew at Maranatha Bible Camp and remodeling the Thrift Shop in Cozad. Most recently he could be found at the Thrift Shop, sitting in the back room sorting clothes.

Willis is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, a half-brother and a half-sister, his wife Carole, and daughter-in-law Judith Harris.

He is survived by his children Ernie (Ronda), Sue (John) Kulhanek, and Tom; grandchildren Megan (Justin) Bebb, Ryan (Chelsey), David, Katherine (Michael) Cruz, Traci (Brandon) Weber, Matthew (Sarah), and Timothy (Elyssa); and 17 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Cozad Thrift Shop or Maranatha Bible Camp. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 12,2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cozad United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Cozad Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Sunday, August 11, 2024 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Berryman Funeral Home.

Ernest Willis Harris (1937-2024)

Sharron K. (Gillett) Henry, age 84, passed away on August 6, 2024 at Great Plains Health in North Platte, Nebraska. &nbsp;Sharron was born in Tekamah, Nebraska, to Kenneth and Viola (Curren) Gillett on December 27, 1939.

In 1943 the family moved to North Platte, Nebraska, where they farmed until the summer of 1957 at which time they moved to Kearney, Nebraska, where Sharron attended Kearney State College. &nbsp;Upon her graduation from Kearney State College in 1963, she entered the Peace Corps and served in Colombia, South America. &nbsp;Upon the completion of her Peace Corps service in 1965, she went directly to Puerto Rico where she taught at Interamerican University of Puerto Rico until 2003. &nbsp;During that time, she completed her Master’s Degree there and obtained her doctors degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. &nbsp;While in Puerto Rico she married Jose Padilla with whom she had two daughters Tania and Natalie. &nbsp;In 2003 she returned to Nebraska where she married her high school sweetheart, Bill J. Henry. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Viola Gillett and sister, Linda.

Sharron is survived by her husband, Bill Henry; daughters, Tania Sercl, Natalie Padilla (April); special niece, Shari Johnson; four grandchildren, eleven step-grandchildren and one step great-granddaughter; brother, Kenneth F. “Bud” (Linda) Gillett.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church, North Platte or the Women’s Resource Center, North Platte.

Sharron Kay Henry (1939-2024)

Colleen Agnes Savage, aged 89, of North Platte, passed away on August 6, 2024, at Great Plains Health. &nbsp;She was born to Ray and Agnes (Sedlacek) Smith in Paxton, NE, on May 13, 1935.

Throughout her childhood, Colleen moved frequently with her family. &nbsp;It was in her teen years that she met and married her high school sweetheart, Frank Eugene Savage. &nbsp;The couple had four children together: Carol, Connie, Frankie, and Rhonda, and settled in North Platte where they worked and raised their family. &nbsp;Colleen spent the first several years of her children’s lives at home with them but then later worked at Natural Nutrition House for a long period before working at Kids Korner Daycare. &nbsp;

Colleen was an outstanding chef and baker and was an avid Husker football fan. &nbsp;She enjoyed cross stitching and gardening, from flowers to vegetables. &nbsp;Colleen was known as a sweet soul and was always kind and caring and filled with fun. &nbsp;She adored her cats, Sassy, Blacky, and Tuffy, as well as her Yorkies, Tinker and Teddy.

Those that survive Colleen include her children, Carol (Larry) Hemenway of Paxton, Connie (Bill) Thrash of North Platte, and Rhonda (Craig) Warneke of North Platte; grandchildren, Denny Thrash of McPherson, KS, Tina (Patrick) Way of North Platte, Elizabeth (Zach) Snow of Kansas City, MO; daugter-in-law, Deanna Savage; several great grandchildren; siblings, Merril Smith of North Platte and Anita Brooks of North Platte.

Preceding her in death is her husband, Frank; parents; son, Frankie; brothers, Raymond and Donald Smith.

Colleen Agnes Savage (1935-2024)

Joyce&nbsp;Jones, age 73, of North Platte passed away August 1, 2024, at Great Plains Health.

Joyce, the daughter of Pearl and Elfie Weaver, was born August 18, 1950, in McCook where she grew up. &nbsp;She graduated from McCook High School and later married Wayne Dybdahl. &nbsp;They made their home in McCook and welcomed a daughter, Annette. &nbsp;

After she and Wayne divorced, Joyce moved to Norfolk where she worked in a hotel and there she met David Jones. &nbsp;They married and moved to Pueblo, CO, then to North Platte.

Joyce liked traveling and camping in the mountains.

She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by David Jones, her daughter, Annette Dybdahl, and guardian, Elizabeth Tirado of North Platte; her sister, Gloria Malleck (Jerry) of Grand Junction, CO; a granddaughter, Brittni Dybdahl; and a niece and nephew.

Joyce Jones (1950-2024)

Joshua R. Benham, 35, of Kearney, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, due to an ongoing heart condition.

He was born on May 4, 1989, in Lexington, Nebraska to Donald and Teri (Rogers) Benham. He attended school in Overton and graduated from Overton High School with the class of 2007.&nbsp;

Joshua was a family man who loved spending his days with his daughter, Emersyn "Goose" and stepdaughter, Madisyn. He had a larger-than-life attitude and lived to the fullest. Nothing could stop him from seeking out his next adventure, whether it was going out boating, camping, fishing or snow skiing. It was downright impossible to pull him out of the water most days. He loved going four wheeling and cruising around in his truck, listening to his favorite music. He was known to many as the most loving person with the biggest heart. Joshua never knew a stranger and if you met him on the street, he would become your best friend in an instant, greeting you with open arms. He was able to make the best situation out of anything and always maintained a positive and loving attitude. His infectious smile and can-do personality will be missed by many.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Emersyn Benham of Kearney; stepdaughter, Madisyn Schubert of Kearney; father, Don Benham of Lexington; grandfather, Jim Knutson of Fairfield; sisters, Ashley (Matthew White) Branstiter of Elwood, and Brandi (Bruce) Ransdell of Kearney; nieces and nephews, Gavin Robertson, Jonathan Robertson, Jakob Ransdell, Riley Todd, Carter Ransdell, Hunter Branstiter, Noah Benham, Logan Benham, Alex White, Brieanna White, and McKenzi White; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and many friends.

Joshua was preceded in death by his mother, Teri Benham, grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington with Lay Minister, Sarah Neben, officiating.

Burial will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.

He attended school in Overton and graduated from Overton High School with the class of 2007.&nbsp;Joshua was a family man who loved spending his days with his daughter, Emersyn "Goose" and stepdaughter, Madisyn. He had a larger-than-life attitude and lived to the fullest. Nothing could stop him from seeking out his next adventure, whether it was going out boating, camping, fishing or snow skiing. It was downright impossible to pull him out of the water most days. He loved going four wheeling and cruising around in his truck, listening to his favorite music. He was known to many as the most loving person with the biggest heart. Joshua never knew a stranger and if you met him on the street, he would become your best friend in an instant, greeting you with open arms. He was able to make the best situation out of anything and always maintained a positive and loving attitude. Joshua Ray Benham (1989-2024)

Rita Belle Leibhart, 77, of Overton, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at her home in Overton.&nbsp;

She was born on February 28, 1947, in Lexington, Nebraska to Junior W. and Catherine N. (Clark) Ward. She attended Lexington Public Schools and graduated from Lexington Senior High School with the class of 1966. She attended Mid Plains Community College in North Platte where she received her degree in nursing in 1972. After graduation, Rita began a lifelong career as a Licensed Practical Nurse and Traveling Nurse, traveling all around western Nebraska, dedicating over 40 years to helping people heal before retiring at 62. Rita also devoted many years teaching Sunday School at the Christian Church in Overton.&nbsp;

On September 11, 1966, Rita was united in Marriage to the love of her life, Paul Leibhart at the Berean Bible Church in Lexington, Nebraska. Two children were blessed to this union: Cade and Amandae: along with stepdaughter Monica. The family spent some time living in Lexington before making their home in Overton in 1980.&nbsp;

Rita was a passionate bookworm, spending her evenings reading her favorite romance novels. She refused to put a book down until she was finished. She was a woman who was always on the go and loved working with her hands, working on her crocheting projects and listening to her favorite singer, Elvis. In her younger years, Rita and Paul spent many weekends dancing the night away. Rita loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her children and always held a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Rita Belle Leibhart (1947-2024)

Bobbie Jean Daiss Tickle, 73, passed away peacefully at home on August 3, 2024, in Laguna Woods, CA.

Born in Imperial, NE, on July 10, 1951, Bobbie was the youngest of Obert and Margaret Daiss's four children. She grew up on the family farm south of Grant, NE, and attended school in Grant where she met the love of her life, Marv Tickle. After graduating from Grant High School in 1969, she attended Kearney State College before marrying Marv in 1970. They enjoyed the next 53 years together as husband and wife.

Bobbie was the full-time mother of two children, Anthony and Ryan. She and Marv raised their boys in Greeley, CO, and then North Platte, NE. Bobbie was endlessly supportive of her sons, who are eternally grateful for her love and encouragement through school, sports, and life.

Outside of her family, she worked in various positions at several institutions including, Rose Insurance Agency, McDonald Elementary School, and the North Platte First Baptist Church.

Bobbie loved playing the piano, singing in church choirs, gardening, swimming, golfing, and attending various sporting events. She also loved to travel and explore, orchestrating her family's annual vacations, including trips to Kansas City Royals baseball games and Lake McConaughy, and skiing in the Rocky Mountains. In 2007, she and Marv relocated from North Platte to Laguna Woods, CA, where they both worked as gate ambassadors for their community until their retirement in 2023. In recent years, Bobbie loved road trips back to Nebraska to visit family, strolling through the Sawdust Art Festival, and sipping glasses of wine at The Cliff restaurant in Laguna Beach.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Obert and Margaret Daiss, and her brother, Bill Daiss.

Bobbie is survived by many family members who will cherish her memory: her husband, Marvin of Laguna Woods, CA; her sons, Anthony (Lisa) of Omaha, NE and Ryan (Ashley Larson) of Pomona, CA; her grandchildren, Lance Tickle and Lexy (Drake) Korb of Omaha, NE; and her great-grandchild, Westin Korb of Omaha; her sisters, Fran Friehauf (Noel Griffith) of Prescott, AZ and Karolyn Brown (Larry) of North Platte, NE; and sister-in-law Jeanie Daiss of Grant, NE.

William Ray Fanter “Smitty”, age 85 of North Platte, Nebraska passed away on August 5, 2024 at Great Plains Health. &nbsp;He was born in Lexington, Nebraska to Walter and Cassie (Robinson) Fanter on May 3, 1939. &nbsp;

William attended school in Lexington until moving to North Platte in 1961 at which time he married Wilma Halouska on June 4, 1961. &nbsp;They were married for 56 years. &nbsp;William helped build I-80 by running heavy equipment, then worked for the North Platte Water Department for 7 years. William then began working for the Union Pacific Railroad where he was employed for 25 years. &nbsp;He enjoyed blacksmithing where he made many one-of-a-kind knives. &nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Patricia and Orvilla; and his wife Wilma.

Survivors include sons, Ronald (Sandy), Bud (Becky) Brant (Jeanne), Max (Cindy), and Greg, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and special friend, Deborah Taylor.

William "Bill" R. Fanter (1939-2024)

Richard (Dick) Berg entered into his eternal home on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at the age of 88 years. &nbsp;He was a born October 5, 1935, to Orlen M. Berg and Gladys O. (Bunde) Berg in Sioux Falls, SD.

He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1958 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corp of Engineers. &nbsp;At the completion of his active duty and 7 ½ years of reserve duty , he completed his military obligation as a Captain.

He married Carolyn L. Niedan on December 22, 1957, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Midland, SD. &nbsp;They lived in Rapid City, SD and had one daughter (Jeannine Berg Porter).

Dick worked for the SD Dept of highways as a District Maintenance Engineer for 14 years. &nbsp;He then formed an Architectural Engineering partnership with Hengel, Berg, and Associates from 1972 to 1981. &nbsp;He was a registered civil engineer in SD, WY, NE, MT, TX and CO. &nbsp;He was active in the American Consulting Engineers Council and was South Dakota ACEC President and South Dakota National Director of ACEC.

Dick later moved to Littleton, CO to work for Project Construction Corporation as a construction project manager. He then worked for Jefferson County Schools for 9 years in the construction management department.

Dick leaves his daughter, Jeannine Kay Porter , CO along with 2 grandsons: Christopher Porter and wife Amanda and great grandchildren Ainsley, Henry and Callum of Humble, TX and Mychal Porter and wife Tara and great granddaughters Evelyn and Ava. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his wife of 57.5 years, Carolyn, parents Orlen and Gladys Berg, sister Gloria Kadinger and brother Orlen Jr.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday August 9, 2024, at North Platte Cemetery. Carpenter Memorial Chapel&nbsp; has been entrusted with the arrangements. &nbsp;

Richard Berg (1935-2024)

On August 5, 2024, Jerry Hohnbaum peacefully passed away at the age of 84. &nbsp;He is now at rest with his beloved Becky and will join her in the Columbarium of the Resurrection Atrium at Episcopal Church of Our Savior.

Jerry Allen Hohnbaum, the son of Kenneth Vernon and Lucile (Downer) Hohnbaum, was born October 15, 1939, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. &nbsp;He was raised in York, Nebraska, where he graduated from York High School. At the age of 13, Jerry began playing the organ for the Baptist-Congregational Church, thus beginning his career in music.

Jerry earned his Bachelor's Degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and his Master of Music Degree in Organ from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he was a student of Myron J. Roberts. &nbsp;Jerry later studied in Belgium with the noted composer, Flor Peeters.

On June 4, 1960, Jerry was united in marriage to Mary Rebecca 'Becky' Lee at Lexington, Nebraska. &nbsp;The couple adopted David Allen and were foster parents to Harry Stephen Mahanes. &nbsp;They were together for 62 years when Becky passed away in 2022.

Jerry had a great love for music; he was a full-time music director in several churches as well as a professional concert organist. &nbsp;While working full-time, he specialized in churches with multiple choir programs and served as an organist-choirmaster in Nebraska, Texas, Missouri, Alabama and Virginia. &nbsp;

In 1977 the Hohnbaums settled in North Platte; Becky taught grade school and tutored as Jerry continued with his music. &nbsp;Jerry was organist-choir master for the Episcopal Church of Our Savior (which he was a member of), St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Holy Spirit Catholic Church, was organist for First Presbyterian Church, and taught piano.

Jerry's full-time music career came to an end when he suffered from hearing loss, but as one door closed another opened. &nbsp;Jerry went on to work for the good of the hard of hearing in Western Nebraska. &nbsp;He was a member of the National Board of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People and Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, where he also served a term as Chair. &nbsp;Jerry was instrumental in establishing an office for the Nebraska Commission in North Platte to serve Western Nebraska. &nbsp;In 2004 Jerry received the Rocky Stone National Humanitarian Award for his work with hard of hearing people by S.H.H.H.

Along with his wife, Becky, Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Lucile Hohnbaum; sister and brother-in-law, Georgia and Don Jones; brother-in-law, Daniel Apple; and in-laws, Frank and Mary Lee.

 </figure>On August 5, 2024, Jerry Hohnbaum peacefully passed away at the age of 84. &nbsp;He is now at rest with his beloved Becky and will join her in the Columbarium of the Resurrection Atrium at Episcopal Church of Our Savior.Jerry Allen Hohnbaum, the son of Kenneth Vernon and Lucile (Downer) Hohnbaum, was born October 15, 1939, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. &nbsp;He was raised in York, Nebraska, where he graduated from York High School. At the age of 13, Jerry began playing the organ for the Baptist-Congregational Church, thus beginning his career in music.Jerry earned his Bachelor's Degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and his Master of Music Degree in Organ from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he was a student of Myron J. Roberts. &nbsp;Jerry later studied in Belgium with the noted composer, Flor Peeters.On June 4, 1960, Jerry was united in marriage to Mary Rebecca 'Becky' Lee at Lexington, Nebraska. &nbsp;The couple adopted David Allen and were foster parents to Harry Stephen Mahanes. &nbsp;They were together for 62 years when Becky passed away in 2022.Jerry had a great love for music; he was a full-time music director in several churches as well as a professional concert organist. &nbsp;While working full-time, he specialized in churches with multiple choir programs and served as an organist-choirmaster in Nebraska, Texas, Missouri, Alabama and Virginia. &nbsp;In 1977 the Hohnbaums settled in North Platte; Becky taught grade school and tutored as Jerry continued with his music. &nbsp;Jerry was organist-choir master for the Episcopal Church of Our Savior (which he was a member of), St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Holy Spirit Catholic Church, was organist for First Presbyterian Church, and taught piano.Jerry's full-time music career came to an end when he suffered from hearing loss, but as one door closed another opened. &nbsp;Jerry went on to work for the good of the hard of hearing in Western Nebraska. &nbsp;He was a member of the National Board of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People and Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, where he also served a term as Chair. &nbsp;Jerry was instrumental in establishing an office for the Nebraska Commission in North Platte to serve Western Nebraska. &nbsp;In 2004 Jerry received the Rocky Stone National Humanitarian Award for his work with hard of hearing people by S.H.H.H.Along with his wife, Becky, Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Lucile Hohnbaum; sister and brother-in-law, Georgia and Don Jones; brother-in-law, Daniel Apple; and in-laws, Frank and Mary Lee.Survivors include his son, David Hohnbaum; foster son, Steve (Connie) Mahanes; grandchildren, Erik (Kellie) Mahanes and Michael Mahanes; great-grandchildren, Lucas and Clayton; his sister, Gale Hohnbaum Apple, and brother, Bill Hohnbaum; as well as other family.Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 9, at Episcopal Church of Our Savior, then Jerry will be placed in the Columbarium alongside his beloved Becky. &nbsp;In lieu of flowers, memorials are to Grace Ministries Food Pantry. &nbsp;The memorial book may be signed online at odeanchapel.com or at Odean Colonial Chapel at C &amp; Sycamore.&nbsp;

Debby&nbsp;Baker passed away on August 4, 2024, after a long, complicated battle with several medical conditions, including dementia.

Debby was born February 7, 1949, to Jack Davis and Beverly Nielsen. She grew up in Gothenburg, Nebraska, and Greeley, Colorado. &nbsp;Debby was very close with her paternal grandmother Mamie and would often speak fondly of their times together.

Debby will be remembered as a caring wife, devoted mother, humorous sister, loving aunt, and generous friend. &nbsp;She was a spirited person who spoke her mind and was fiercely supportive of those she loved. &nbsp;We will all miss Debby's many phone calls with George Strait or the TV blaring in the background.

Debby is survived by her husband of nearly 48 years, Gary; her son, Zachary; &nbsp;three sisters, Jinx (Rodney) Reust of Grand Junction, CO, Dru (George) Roosevelt of Johnstown, CO, and Jerdy Sterling of Tucson, AZ; and her nieces and nephews she loved dearly, Courtney, Sarah, Ross, Jacey, Leann, and Bryan.

Debby Baker (1949-2024)

&nbsp; Amy Rae Kohler, daughter of Dennis and Barbara (Steele) Kohler, was born February 5, 1976.&nbsp; She passed away at age 48 on August 5, 2024, after a battle with cancer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Amy was born and raised in North Platte. &nbsp;She graduated from North Platte High School in 1995 and later from Central Community College in Grand Island with a degree in child care. &nbsp;

Amy married Curtis Ledbetter and they moved to Omaha where she was employed by the Montessori Child Care Center for nearly 10 years. &nbsp;After she and Curtis divorced, Amy moved to Texarkana, AR, and went to work as Assistant Manager of Chico's Clothing Store. &nbsp;She returned to North Platte five years later and moved in with her brother, John, to help care for her nephews, Jacob, Kyle and Ryan. &nbsp;Amy then went on to work for Walgreens, Westfield Pharmacy, and the North Platte Public Schools as a para-educator for special needs children at Adams Middle School. &nbsp;

She had a big heart for children; she was strict but always fair and always had a candy treat ready for them. &nbsp;Amy especially loved working with babies and young children and she really enjoyed working with the teachers at Adams Middle School. &nbsp;

Amy collected Cherished Care Bears and was always kind and generous to others and loved her family. &nbsp;While working at Walgreens she donated her credit points to kids and other customers who needed them. &nbsp;She also looked forward to playing Keno with her mom and grandma, Frances Steele, on Saturdays. &nbsp;

Amy will be remembered for her love of children and as a people-person who enjoyed talking and being around almost everyone. &nbsp;Quoting her uncle Dan: "Amy was a beautiful girl with a beautiful soul that shone bright to all who were lucky enough to know her. &nbsp;Truly, the world was a happier place because she was in it."

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, John Eldon and Frances Steele and William and Katherine Kohler; uncles, Don Steele, Bob Kohler, Kenneth Kohler and Richard Kohler; and aunt, Jeannette Kohler.

Amy Kohler (1976-2024)

Charles Walter “Shot” (Erny) Kenton hung up his cowboy hat for the last time here on Earth, August 1, 2024. He was born June 12, 1951, to Genevieve Hamilton (Erny) Kenton and the late Charles Walter Erny, in Alliance, Nebraska. He spent his childhood growing up in Thedford, Broken Bow, Kearney, and Lexington with his mother and her children, Cathy, Deb, Sherri, Tammy, and Fred. After his grandfather’s death, the family returned to the family ranch, north of Thedford. In his high school years, he attended Thedford High School where he was in the graduating class of 1969. During this time is when he began one of his favorite rodeo sports, Bareback Bronc riding. In 1968, his junior year, he competed at the Nebraska State High School Rodeo finals where he won the chance to compete at the National High School Rodeo finals in Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp;

&nbsp;In 1994, he was united in marriage to Cindy (Burnham) Huffman from Burwell, and they made their home on the ranch north of Thedford.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Shot’s life mainly consisted of being on the back of a horse. From Bareback and Saddle Bronc riding to team roping and there wasn’t a colt he couldn’t get by. He was asked by many to break colts and put miles on horses, and he was always willing to teach others how to rope and ride, especially his nieces and nephews. Shot’s work experience took him to many different places. Some of those experiences included riding cutting horses for Willy Klingbeil, ranching for Floyd &amp; Sharon Bryant at Box T, Glen Nutter and Mark Nutter, Blaine and Helen Sherman at Sherman Well Drilling, and Greg Perrett Construction. After retiring to town, he was always day working for whoever needed him to come help. He found joy in being able to help his friends and neighbors.

&nbsp;If riding wasn’t on his to-do list for the day, you would find Shot chasing coyotes with hounds, fishing, playing cards and Yahtzee, golfing, attending sporting events to watch the kids, or drinking beer with his buddies.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Shot was proceeded into death by his biological father Charles, his mother, Genevieve, Uncles - DeWayne Erny, Leroy Erny, Ernest “Speed” Erny, his half-sister Tammy From and nephew-in-law Jason Arensdorf. Left to remember the memories of him are Cindy Kenton, half-sister Cathy (Jim) Williams, Tagg (Jayme) From, Samantha From, Amanda From, Clayton Allen, Clint Allen, Brenda (Lee) Nelson, Jennifer Arensdorf, Jason (Lisa) Williams, several great nieces and nephews and too many friends to name them all.&nbsp;

Shot Kenton (1951-2024)

Jann Devine of Cozad passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024 at Emerald Care and Nursing at the age of 78.

Jann was born on June 19, 1946 at Gothenburg, Nebraska to Wilbur and Doris (Schroeder) Kloepping. Jann attended rural country school at Willow Island and graduated from Cozad High School. She married Dwight Devine on June 22, 1963. Their union was blessed with son, Robert and twin daughters, Janna and Lanna. She dedicated over 40 years of her life to Homestead Bank, where she left a lasting impact. Jann was a great cook- her popcorn and tacos were adored by all, with many fond memories made at "Taco Jann's."

Jann was a caregiver to many and her home was a sanctuary for family and friends. Her love for family and friends knew no bounds, and she will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She was kind, selfless and had a heart full of compassion.

We will forever cherish the memories created with such a remarkable woman and remember the warmth and generosity that Jann brought into the lives of those around her.

Douglas "Rock" Ray Jensen of Cozad passed away Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege at the age of 71. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. 

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Cozad United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Cozad Cemetery.

Jameson Allen Corder, a brother, son, nephew, and grandson, was born in McCook, NE, on December 6, 2021, and passed away on August 2, 2024.

In his short time with us, Jameson brought immense joy and love to all who were fortunate enough to know him. Jameson found joy in music, with favorites including "Wheels on the Bus" and "Baby Shark." He also had a great fascination with dinosaurs and trucks, sparking his imagination and filling his days with adventures. However, above all else, he cherished spending time with his mommy and playing in the sprinklers.

In this time of grief, Jameson is survived by his parents Jerod and Joshlynne Corder, his sister Jayelynn Rose Corder who will forever hold him close in her memories. Additionally, he leaves behind his loving grandparents J.D. and Kathy White, Joshua and June Boyd, as well as Rick and Nancy Corder who showered him with endless love and affection.

Jameson's brief presence touched the lives of many around him in ways that words cannot fully express. His innocent smile brought light into the lives of those who knew him best. While he may no longer be here with us physically, his spirit will continue to live on through the cherished memories shared by family and friends.

LaVerne Charles Frick (1944-2024)

Willard Gene Harbeson, 87, passed away on August 2, 2024, at the Perkins County Community Hospital in Grant, Nebraska.

Gene was born on January 19, 1937, in Madrid, Nebraska, to Archie Willard and Esther Naomi (Hanson) Harbeson.

Gene grew up in Elsie, attended the Elsie grade school then the Elsie High School. After graduating in 1954, he enlisted in the US Navy and served until November 1957. During his time in the Navy he served on a supply ship and two ammunition ships, the Wrangell and the Mauna Loa. While serving on the Mauna Loa the ship caught fire in New York harbor. The ship was towed out to sea; if it had exploded it would have leveled lower Manhattan.

Gene met his future wife, Joan McMail, while he was stationed in New York. They were married on November 22, 1958, at Mary, Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Brooklyn, NY. Gene and Joan moved from Brooklyn to Oakland, New Jersey, where they lived for over 30 years. Gene was employed by the Bendix Corporation as an electronics technician. He was very proud to have worked on the prototype guidance system for the Apollo 11 spaceflight that landed a man on the moon.

After retiring in 1996, Gene and Joan built a home outside of Elsie and moved back to Gene's hometown, where he dabbled in farming and raised about a dozen cattle.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Esther.

Gene is survived by his wife, Joan; his brothers, Earl (Sherri) of Los Angeles, Duane (Heidi) of Los Angeles, and Donald (Joan) of Elsie; nephews, Chris and Paul; niece, Heather, aunt, Lillian Hanson and special cousin, Jim Hanson.

Gene Harbeson (1937-2024)

Gary Douglas Peterson, 79, of Madrid, Nebraska passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024, at his home in Greeley, Nebraska.

Gary was born July 22, 1944, in Ogallala, Nebraska to Marion and Ruby (Woodley) Peterson. He graduated from Madrid High School with the class of 1962.

On September 28, 1963, Gary was united in marriage to Jerre Lynn Miller, and their union was blessed with two children, Janet and Shelly.

After high school Gary worked on a ranch in the Sandhills and enjoyed his time being a cowboy. After marriage Gary found a passion in being a mechanic in which he owned and operated his own mechanic shop, Peterson's Auto Service, located just behind his house in Madrid, Nebraska. Once his children were born, Gary loved to spend many days at Lake McConaughy on his sailboat with his wife and two daughters. As Gary got older, he enjoyed motorcycle rides with his wife in which they would ride across the county to different vacation spots.

Gary is survived by his children, Janet (David) Hoffert of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and Shelly (Patrick) Donovan of Greeley, Nebraska; his grandchildren, Jessi Hoffert and Montana, Kendra Fox, Ryne Donovan, and Kara (Benjamin) Ramold; and a brother, Marion Jr. Peterson.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Jerre Lynn, brother, Kenneth, sisters, Janice and Sharon, and grandson, Marcus Fox.

Family and friends are welcome to honor Gary as he will be laid to rest in the Madrid Cemetery on August 10th at 1:00 pm Mountain Standard Time.&nbsp;

Gary D. Peterson (1944-2024)

Larry Gene Montross, 81, of North Platte, Nebraska passed away August 4, 2024 at his home in North Platte. &nbsp;He was born March 18, 1943&nbsp; in North Platte to Erma and Junior Montross. &nbsp;He graduated from North Platte High School in 1961. &nbsp;While in high school he was a proud member of FFA where he served as an Officer. &nbsp;After high school he attended Colorado State University for one year. &nbsp;He went on to ride and exercise racehorses at various racetracks, Aquaduct Racetrack in Queens, New York and Hazel Park in Michigan just to name a few.

He married Linda Ann Fleecs on August, 6, 1966. &nbsp;They made their home on East State Farm Road. &nbsp;In 1977 they built the home of their dreams, a log home. &nbsp;They had two girls, Jodi Ann and Kelly Jean. &nbsp;Larry was very involved as a 4-H leader for the Riders of the Blue Sage, School Board member for Sioux Look School, Extension Office Board Member, member of the Cattleman’s Association and in the Army Reserves.

Larry worked 24 years at Birdwood Products then went to work for Farmland Industries/Land-O-Lakes as a Feedlot Specialist. &nbsp;He was very proud of his involvement with the cattle industry and made many friends throughout the years.

He is survived by his wife Linda, daughter, Kelly (Mark) Timmons; granddaughters, Cortney (Brad) Wright, Justy (Geremy) Gortemaker; grandsons, Nolan Timmons, Eli Timmons; great-grandchildren, Beckett Wright, Trace Wright; son-in-law, Garth Bullington; sister, Judy Mullen, his dog, Jake; special friends, Dave and Lisa Josten, Monte and Twila Madsen; along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his daughter, Jodi; parents; grandparents; aunt and uncle, Bobbie (Lester) Stenger; cousin, Don Stenger.

Larry Gene Montross (1943-2024)

Edward Arthur Kinish, age 77 of Brady NE, passed away Saturday August 3rd, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. Ed was born on July 29, 1947 in Broken Bow, NE to Arthur Edward and Lily Barbara (Weinman) Kinish. He was the sixth born of seven children; Barbara, Angela, Lois, Virginia, Sarah and Karen. He was the beloved “Uncle Eddie” to many nieces and nephews he grew up alongside. Ed said he always felt very close to and loved by his family who was also very proud of him.

Ed was married to Karen M. Goodhand on April 8, 1972 in Fort Monmouth Chapel in Eatontown, NJ and they had one child, Tonia, two years later in Okinawa Japan where he was stationed during Vietnam.

Ed was fortunate that God allowed him the many talents he had naturally as well as the education he got along the way through life. He was born to be a farmer and rancher. He graduated high school in Merna, Nebraska. He enlisted in the Army National Guard when he was nineteen and then went active duty in the Army when he was 23. In the United States Army he trained and became a mechanical communications expert. After discharging from the Army in 1978, Ed made his home in Brady and remained in the National Guard. He attended Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) for an associate degree in HVAC and had his own business for about 15 years, then later received a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Technology from UNK.&nbsp;

But everyone who knows Ed knows that his UP job was just to be able to feed his “hobby” that he started after graduating from UNK and after Tonia left home. That was his affinity for miniature Black Angus cows called American Aberdeen Angus. Karen started the herd by adopting a bottle calf from the sale barn one day and at the peak of their operation Ed and Karen had over 250 head of “pets” to feed and love and take care of. They both love animals and they were very attentive parents. Ed has friends throughout the country that have cows from his herd. Besides the cattle preoccupation Ed also loved hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, “shootin the breeze” and just generally being with people.Ed was a farmer, a son, a husband, a father, a teacher, a doctor to God’s creatures, a soldier, a carpenter, a mechanic, even a musician if necessary to lighten a mood.&nbsp;Ed was a good person who cared about family and friends and would help them out during their time of need. Many have expressed that Ed helped them out in so many ways. He’d lend an ear and a solution if they had a problem and he’d help them fix their dilemma when he could and get them back “on the road of life again.” He always said that people need second chances and he helped when he could to see that people received those second chances.&nbsp;He did not know a stranger, and if you were his friend, that friendship lasted forever. He was loved and respected more than he ever knew. He finished what he started and that is a life well lived.&nbsp;Ed is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters (Sarah and Virginia), three brothers-in-law (Floyd, Mike and Bill), two nieces (Diane and Kandi), one great-grandchild (Axl), and many other friends and family.&nbsp;Ed leaves behind his wife of 52 years, his daughter Tonia N. Beck, Grandchildren Sydney M. Ostronic (Tyler), Sofia T. Beck, James P. Beck Jr., Jacob C. Beck, Thomas R. Beck, and great-grandchildren Aislynn E. Ostronic and Riona L. Ostronic.Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Gothenburg; Monday, August 12, 2024, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm with the family present.
