John Ross Laird, from Cozad, Nebraska passed away Sunday, November 13, 2022, at Bryan Health Hospital, in Lincoln, Nebraska surrounded by his loving family.&nbsp; He was 77 years young.&nbsp; Born February 21, 1945, to Ross and Nancy (Harlan) Laird of rural Cozad.&nbsp; In his first marriage, he was blessed with two children: Ramonna and Todd (Pamella) Laird.&nbsp; He then married Bobbi Spradlin, September 4, 1981, in which he was blessed with two additional children: Lea Ann (Ron) Stephenson and Melisa (Eric) Raastad.&nbsp;&nbsp;

John had a sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humor.&nbsp; He never missed an opportunity to share a smile and a joke. John spent his time doing the things he loved most; being with his family and friends, dancing, singing with his Praise Time girls, serving for his church as an Elder, Worship Leader and official flapjack maker. He enjoyed being outside driving his parents ‘64 Cadillac, watching the birds and collecting rocks.&nbsp; On winter weekends you could find him at the Willow Hilton serving breakfast and hunting. Yellowstone National Park held a special place in his heart. He spent most summers there as a child and took several trips there in his adult life. He was the best tour guide to have on a Yellowstone trip! He served on the local volunteer fire department for 25 years.&nbsp; John worked locally as a supervisor for Nebraska Plastics as a Fabrication Supervisor for 42 years before he “retired.”&nbsp; He then enjoyed working many odd jobs for local farmers, a hay company, and auction house.&nbsp;&nbsp; John was a dedicated and loving uncle, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed.&nbsp; &nbsp;He is survived by his wife, of Cozad, his son, of Manhattan, KS, and his two daughters of Lincoln.&nbsp; John has a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and many more that were blessed to have a special connection and feel his love.&nbsp; John was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Blanche Laird, Bill Laird and Beverly Boyd, and daughter Ramonna.&nbsp;

A celebration of John’s life will be at 11 a.m. Monday November 21, 2022, at Church of Christ, 2117 Newell Street, Cozad. John Laird (1945-2022)

James A. Willey, 78, of Whitney, NE, passed away November 17, 2022, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, NE, after a courageous battle of colon cancer.

Jim was born March 18, 1944 to Don and Midge (Lee) Willey of Grand Island, NE. As a child, he enjoyed spending time with his two brothers, younger sister and their various species of pets to include ducks, raccoons and skunks...de-scented, of course. He was known for his work ethic, attention to detail and for completing a task thoroughly. He learned this skill at the age of 14 while working at Kelly's Market in Grand Island, starting as a sorter of potatoes and recycled Coke bottles in the back of the building to later managing in the front. He attended Grand Island Senior High, graduating in 1962 and attended UNL for one year where he admitted to his grandchildren he enjoyed driving up and down "O" street more than pursuing an education. In 1966, he married Nancy Bainbridge and together raised two children, JD and Kandace in Crawford, NE, where he was a manager of the local Jack and Jill grocery store. One day the owner came in and said he was selling the store and wanted Jim to stay. Jim, like many people do when faced with a tough decision, went to the local bar to seek advice. This led him to one of the proudest decisions of working for the BNSF railroad, retiring in 2003. In 1995, he married Mary Hartman and together enjoyed traveling and watching the wildlife from the front window, until her health wouldn't allow it. He cared for Mary and through this act of kindness, many realized his unlimited well of graciousness and unconditional love. Jim will be remembered for his boundless amount of positivity, friendship, love of family, animals, patriotism and his appreciation for all those who cared for him. Not to mention, his beloved 1964 GTO's, "Silver" and "Gold" which he enjoyed with his children and grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his son, JD (Alyssa) Willey of Missouri City, TX, and their children, McKenzie of Calispell, MT, and Hayden of Missouri City, TX. His daughter, Kandace Davis of Gothenburg, and children, Jaiden of Lincoln and Jonathan of Gothenburg, and his sister, Candy Stuart, of Grand Island, NE. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hartman, parents Don and Midge, two brothers, Mike and Don, nephew, David and brother-in-law Richard Stuart.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hilltop Estates for the special care they provided to Jim, the special treats, winks, and inside jokes that made him smile. Also, Chadron Home and Health and Hospice and Central Plains Home and Health and Hospice for coordinating his care. Jim chose to be cremated and requested a private family burial in Crawford, NE. A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at the Bethel Community Church in Whitney at a later date. Joan E. Johansen, 89, life-long resident of North Platte, NE passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at Great Plains Health Hospital.

Joan was born on March 9, 1933 in North Platte the daughter of Frederick W. and Elizabeth (Meyers) Anderson.&nbsp; She graduated from North Platte High School and worked for over 28 years with the Union Pacific Railroad as a clerk.&nbsp; She married William G. Johansen and together they had two children.&nbsp; She was an active member of First Lutheran Church, and member of the WELCA circle.&nbsp; She volunteered with the Goodfellow Shoe Fund and enjoyed participating in the Senior Center exercise group.&nbsp; She will be missed by all that loved and knew her. Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Kirk Johansen of Mancos, CO; granddaughter, Rachel Weiland; grandson, Mark Redman; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Elizabeth Redman; a grandson, Reid Weiland; and a sister Phyllis Clarke.

Dean Herman Dack, age 94, of McCook passed away at the Community Hospital of McCook on Saturday, November 12, 2022. He was born in McCook on October 20, 1928, to Joseph E. and Maude C. (Tubbs) Dack. He loved country life and raising livestock.&nbsp; He joined the United States Army in January of 1951, serving as a member of the 456th&nbsp;Field Artillery Unit during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany until December 19, 1952, when he was Honorably Discharged. Upon his return home, Dean continued farming with his brothers and began working at the Red Willow County ASCS office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On February 16, 1964, he was united in marriage to Vera Schwab at the Methodist Church in Lyle, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Together they worked their farm northwest of Indianola, Nebraska, where they raised their two daughters. He was also a seed salesman for P.A.G. and then Cargill.&nbsp; He served nine years on the Red Willow ASCS County Committee and eight years on the McCook Public Power Board.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dean "retired" in 1999, and he and Vera moved to McCook, Nebraska. &nbsp; &nbsp; Dean's favorite past times were spending time with his family, visiting with friends at the sale barn on sale days, playing pool, hunting and rooting for the Dodgers and the Huskers.

&nbsp; &nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Maude; brothers: Grover, Alvin, Edwin, Joseph and Bradley; and sisters, Opal and Ruby.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Dean is survived by his wife of 58 years, Vera, of McCook; daughters, Sheri and husband, David Sempeck of Omaha, Neb., and Connie and husband, Ron Stritt of Indianola, Neb.; six grandchildren: Luke, Matthew, Colin, Shelby, Alex, and Johnathan; and six great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Arnold Keith Johnson, 81 of Chappell died November 15, 2022 at Sidney Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 19 at Berea Lutheran Church northeast of Chappell with Pastor Scotty Ray officiating. Burial will follow in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Friday at Holechek-Bondegard Funeral Home in Chappell. Holechek-Bondegard Funeral Home of Chappell is serving the Johnson family.

Arnie was born in Julesburg, Colorado on April 8, 1941 to Elmer and Ingrid (Johnson) Johnson. Arnie was a lifelong member of Berea Lutheran Church. He attended country school and graduated from Deuel County High School in 1959. Upon graduating he attended Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska for two years. After returning to work on the family farm in Garden County he married Norma Peterson. Two children were born to this union: daughter, Deann and son, Tim. Arnie's many careers in which he was usually working more than one at a time included: farming his entire life, custom harvesting (26 years), over the road trucking (25 Years), volunteer fire fighter, carpet installer, packing house and county road worker. Arnie later divorced. He then married the love of his life Jeanne Davidson on October 11, 1979, and added three sons to his family: Duane, Jim and Bobby. Arnie continued to farm, drive truck and was the Chappell and Creek Valley Schools Bus and Activities Driver for 27 years. Arnie always had a story to tell or an opinion to share. His family was his world. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping at the lake with his boys, watching football, baseball, and rodeo on tv and reading his newspapers and Fence Post.

Arnie is survived by his children: Deann and husband, Tim Speirs of Chappell, Tim and wife, Kim Johnson of Chappell, Duane and wife Bilinda of Moore Haven, Fl, Bobby and wife Angie of Colorado Springs, CO. Ten grandchildren: Trevor, Levi, Lexi, Skylar, Maddy, Alyson, Abbie, Chance, Anna and Ethan and seven great grandchildren. Brother, Orv (Karen) of Wahoo, brother Lloyd (Bonnie) of Ogallala, sister-in-law Twila of Chappell, sister- in-law Donna of Seattle, Washington and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 infant brothers, older brothers Merv and Milt, infant daughter Christine and wife Jeanne.

Arnold "Arnie" Johnson (1941-2022)

&nbsp; Troy D. Fraser, 58, passed away at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, CO, on November 7, 2022 after a brief battle following a brain bleed. Troy was born on September 30, 1964 in Lusk, WY, to Phil and Beulah (Penfield) Fraser. He was the youngest in his family. Troy grew up working alongside his family in ranching and the feedlot industry. The family moved several times while Troy was growing up. He graduated from High School in Tribune, KS and later attended school at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington, WY. Over the course of his life he had a variety of employment interests, including continued work with cattle in both feedlots and ranching. His caring side also encouraged him to help others as a Certified Nurse's Aide in Assisted Living and Home Health Care. His latest roles added his fencing business, "Rounder's Fencing Company" to his resume. In August of 1997, he married Jayne Engler in Casper, Wyoming. Troy said that he knew Jayne was meant to be his wife because when they met, she knew how to make a great meatloaf and had her own copy of John Wayne's McClintock. This area was a wonderful location for Troy as he was able to combine his interests of working outdoors, horses, cattle, and roping into making a life that he loved. The Frasers and the people of Arthur became friends, and Troy quickly added to his list of roping partners. For those who tried to pigeonhole Troy into a particular category as an individual, he was full of surprises. He was an avid reader of all genres of books, but limited his reading to anything with pages. Troy enjoyed a variety of movies, including action films, mysteries, romantic comedies, Disney, and John Wayne Westerns. He had an uncanny skill of being able to name actors from movies and any other films they had starred in. He liked to try new foods and was especially fond of Mexican and Italian, but few meals could top his wife's baking. Troy and Jayne enjoyed traveling, with special trips to Hawaii, Louisiana for Mardi Gras, Yellowstone, and Grand Junction. In his spare time, Troy enjoyed participating in team roping and ranch rodeos, helping with Special Olympic Horse Shows, playing cards, board games, and laughing with friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, several aunts, uncles, cousins, beloved horse, Tiny, and numerous four-legged partners. Troy was born on September 30, 1964 in Lusk, WY, to Phil and Beulah (Penfield) Fraser. He was the youngest in his family. Troy grew up working alongside his family in ranching and the feedlot industry. The family moved several times while Troy was growing up. He graduated from High School in Tribune, KS and later attended school at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington, WY. Over the course of his life he had a variety of employment interests, including continued work with cattle in both feedlots and ranching. His caring side also encouraged him to help others as a Certified Nurse's Aide in Assisted Living and Home Health Care. His latest roles added his fencing business, "Rounder's Fencing Company" to his resume. In August of 1997, he married Jayne Engler in Casper, Wyoming. Troy said that he knew Jayne was meant to be his wife because when they met, she knew how to make a great meatloaf and had her own copy of John Wayne's McClintock. &nbsp; Harold Richard "Chick" Kampfe, a lifelong Brule resident, age 102, passed away on November 14, 2022, at Sidney Regional Medical Center Extended-care. He and his wife Beatrice moved to Sloan's Assisted Living in Sidney to be closer to family in 2016. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 21, 2022, at John's Lutheran Church in Brule, with Reverend Jon Dickmander officiating. Burial will be in the Brule Cemetery, with Military Services to follow. Harold was born January 26, 1920, at the family farm north of Gothenburg, NE, the middle child of Edwin A. &amp; Ida (Block) Kampfe. He had four siblings. When he was 6, the family moved to Brule, where his father managed the Aden &amp; Kampfe store. He was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church on June 4, 1933, and has been active in the church ever since. While he was in high school (graduating in 1937), he was a member of the Boys' Basketball State Tournament Team. He also participated in the baseball team. Chick married his "lifetime sweetheart," Beatrice Kuskie, on August 15, 1941. They celebrated their 80th Wedding Anniversary in 2021. This union was blessed by two children-Sharon Marie and Richard Paul. The couple resided in Brule, where they raised their children and lived their entire life. In November 1942, he began his Army military service in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. He was a radio operator in the 17th Field Artillery. He earned 6 Campaign Stars in the European Theatre. His battalion was awarded the French Croix-de-Guerre award for service. He was honorably discharged from the Army in October 1945. Chick started working at "Kampfe's Store" at an early age and continued after his graduation. After the service, his brother Lester and he purchased the store from his father and continued operating it until their retirement in 1982. Chick was active in civic affairs, serving on the town board and the Brule School Board. He was an avid hunter, bowler, golfer, and reader. He was a member of the Brule Volunteer Fire Dept. for over 25 years, a charter member of the Brule Lion's Club, a lifetime member of the American Legion, and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 3755. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Billy G. Marhenke of Cozad passed away Monday, November 14, 2022 at Cozad Community Hospital at the age of 73. Bill was born May 1, 1949 in Hebron, Nebraska to Carroll Kay and Dolly (Thompson) Marhenke. The family moved to Cozad in 1963 where Bill graduated from high school with the class of 1968. He entered the U.S. Navy on April 14, 1969 and served during Vietnam. Bill married Carolyn Lee on August 3, 1976. Their union was blessed with 2 children: Chadd and Angie. He worked at Fasse Building and Supply, City of Cozad Street Dept. and Gruber Painting. Bill was an avid Husker fan. He enjoyed painting, listening to the oldies, and loved to hate his cat Sly. His most treasured times were spent with family and friends and attending his grandkids activities. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Denise Doshier; niece, Alicia Rose Balsick and grandma, Wilma Ruth Canning Marhenke. Survivors include his son, Chadd (Tanna) Marhenke and their children, Kadyn and Graci Marhenke; his daughter, Angie (Jim) Reed and their children, Isaac and Brady Reed; siblings, Lana Grist, Marianne Marhenke-Balsick, Cheryl LaCombe, Steve (Teresa) Beisner, Michael (Donna) Beisner and Jeff (Jen) Marhenke.

Thomas Dean Musgrave, age 64, of McCook, NE passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at his home in McCook.

Tom was born August 2, 1958 in Lincoln, NE to parents Donald Dean and Teresa Genevieve (Hay) Musgrave. He was one of three children.&nbsp; Tom graduated from Republican Valley High School with the Class of 1977.&nbsp;

Tom was a father of three children and a longtime employee of Parker Hannifin in McCook.&nbsp; He was a member of the McCook Evangelical Free Church where he taught Sunday School and organized church camp outs.&nbsp; Tom was an avid Husker Fan who enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap shooting, camping and photography. He was also a Hunter Safety Instructor.&nbsp;

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother in law, Doug Welch.

Those left to celebrate his memory include his son, Matt (Jennifer) Musgrave and their children, Wesley, Dexter and Zeke, all of McCook; two daughters, Megan Musgrave of McCook and Miranda (Micah) Masterson and children, Jay and Joanna, all of Omaha, NE; sister, Terry Welch of Curtis, NE; brother, Dale (Tammy) Musgrave of Ong, NE; and numerous extended family members and friends.

Madellan Kay was born on April 8, 1945, to George and Velma (Tappan) Morrison in Arnold, Nebraska. She was in a hurry and would not wait for the doctor to get there, so the nurse delivered her, she was in a hurry all her life and did not want to be late. Kay grew up on a farm southwest of Arnold with her big brother Bill, whom she adored. She attended a country school, Crossroads, until they consolidated into town her sixth-grade year. She graduated from Arnold High School in 1963. After a year of college, she worked in North Platte until her marriage to Bruce McConnell of Sutherland on April 30, 1966. Bruce and Kay were transferred to several towns in Nebraska while Bruce worked for the telephone company, and lived in Sutherland, St. Edward, Imperial, and Arnold. One of Kay's most cherished activities was leading children to Jesus through Vacation Bible School. She started teaching when she was a high school junior and finally retired when she was in her late sixties. Kay was Secretary at the Arnold United Methodist church for 30 years. Kays biggest joy in life was her kids and grandkids. She rarely missed any of their activities.

Preceding her in death were her parents, in-laws, sister-in-law Patricia Jones, nephew Jim Runner, great nephew Andre Quick, and her beloved son Clark Aaron McConnell.

Patricia was born February 15, 1956 in San Diego, CA to parents Richard A. and Elizabeth Ann (Wells) Simants.&nbsp; She was one of three children.&nbsp; The family moved to Palisade, NE where Patricia attended school, graduating in 1974.&nbsp; On February 20, 1993, Patricia married Gary Hanken in Palisade.&nbsp; Over the years, Patricia spent time putting together puzzles, reading, playing cards and visiting with her family and friends.&nbsp; She collected Boyd Bears and enjoyed cross stitch.&nbsp; Patricia was a member of the Women’s American Legion Auxiliary and the Community Service Club of Palisade.&nbsp; Over the years, Patricia drove the Palisade school bus, worked at the T-Junction in Imperial, NE and was a postal clerk for many years at the Palisade Post Office.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Richard Simants.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Gary Hanken, of McCook; three sons, Dennis (Kristin) Decker of Eagle, ID, Randy Decker of McCook and James (Renee) Baxter of Forney, TX; daughter, Rebecca (Kelsey) Gloe of North Platte, NE; brother, Dan (Heather) Simants of Fairbanks, AK; and her six grandchildren.

Thelma A. Mathes (1923-2022)

&nbsp; Margaret Ann O’Neil Phillips was born September 29,1938 in Imperial NE and passed from this earth November 12, 2022, at the Wauneta Care and Therapy Center Wauneta, NE. She was 84. Marge was the second daughter of Bernard and Dorothy (Roth) O’Neil. Marge started her education in a country school on the north divide, she finished eighth grade at Wauneta Public School and graduated high school from St. Patrick’s Academy boarding school in Sydney, NE in 1956. She attended business school and worked as an administrative assistant in Denver, CO. Marge chose to go back to school, ultimately earning her degree in elementary education from Metropolitan State College in Denver. Marge had a love of learning and spent most of her life taking classes. She chose classes based off what interested her, not to further her degree even spending a semester at sea when she was in her seventies. Marge spent most of her adult life in Colorado, she worked as an administrative assistant for Samsonite and Dixon Paper Corporations before earning her teaching degree. She taught elementary education for many years at various small Catholic schools. She had a passion for underprivileged students. Marge had little interest in acquiring “things” but had an enthusiasm for experiences. She loved to travel and was always saving for and planning her next adventure. Marge loved to quilt and made dozens of quilts over the years, most she gave away as gifts or donated to charity. Her greatest joy was her family. She did not have children of her own but loved spending time with her sisters, nieces, nephews and their children. She was loved dearly by her family and will be very missed. Margaret A Phillips (1938-2022)

Shirley Anne Carr, age 90, of Whitman, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at the Ogallala Community Hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Shirley was born June 22, 1932 in Hyannis, NE to Forest and Georgia (Swiggart) Bonifield. She attended a rural school, south of Whitman in District 2. She then graduated from Hyannis High School in 1949.

Shirley taught at rural schools north of Whitman and Mullen, NE with the three year teaching certificate she received in high school. She also attended Scottsbluff Junior College in 1950. &nbsp; Shirley married Ronald Carr on June 3rd, 1951 in Hyannis, making their home south of Whitman on the Carr Family Ranch. To this union, five children were born; Reagan, Ronald, Randy, Sally, and Sue.

Shirley loved her family deeply. She was an excellent wife and mother. Shirley Anne (Bonifield) Carr (1932-2022)

MICHAEL "Mike" KENT BERRY, 67, of Ogallala, passed away on November 8, 2022, at the Ogallala Community Hospital, surrounded by family. Mike was born August 23, 1955, in Ogallala to Myron Dwayne Berry and Beverly Jean Sneddeker. He graduated from Ogallala High School with the class of 1973. Michael worked for Mike &amp; Wendell TV and Appliance store until February of 1989 when he went to work as a refrigeration mechanic for the UPFE in North Platte. When North Platte shuttered much of its operations in 1997, Mike transferred to Pocatello, ID. He loved his time in Pocatello and immersed himself in the experience of mountain and outdoor life. Mike would eventually come back to his beloved hometown and return to work in North Platte in 2005, but his great love of the mountains remained with him always. Mike was a mechanic through and through. In his younger years, he greatly enjoyed building drag cars with his&nbsp;brother, Robert. The two collaborated on a '68 Chevy Camaro that was their pride and joy. This passion continued by taking his grandkids to the Julesburg drag strip. He loved to ride his Harley and was a longtime member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. Mike was an unapologetic Husker fan through thick and thin. Mike was a man of deep faith and had read the Bible cover to cover several times throughout his life. He greatly loved his grandkids and enjoyed spending time with them, from fishing, hunting, and going to the gun range. His hobbies included fashioning knives from the antlers he'd get from hunting. Mike made several knives over the years, which are now family treasures. Many memories were made with his children and grandchildren processing deer, and he was known for his secret deer jerky recipe. He was a member of the Muzzleloader Club and was a regular at the Rendezvous for many years, making Indian beaded jewelry and buckskin clothing, among other things. Mike was a longtime and committed member of the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department, serving for 15 years. He made many wonderful friends who were like family. His heart was always for his community. Michael was a simple man that didn't want much and he was devoted to loving God and his family. He was selfless in many ways. Mike's faith was tested with many trials and tribulations, but he never gave up hope that God would deliver him from those difficult trials. On what would have been the twenty-first anniversary of his Mother's burial, God did just that. May he rest in God's peace.

Our family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at TA, Front Street, and many other local restaurants for treating Mike like family. Mike was preceded in death by his mom, Beverly Jean Berry, and a brother, Robert Dwayne Berry. November 11, 2022, at Emerald Care &amp; Rehabilitation of Columbus.

 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Ollie Fullmer officiating. 
Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be on

continue on Wednesday, from 9:30 AM, until service time at the church.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Faye Schrad was born December 30, 1958, in Columbus,
 Nebraska, to Lloyd and Norma (Tredway) Ernst. She was baptized at the 
Federated Church, graduated from Lakeview High School, and for 35 years 
worked at Vishay. In 1982, Jackie was united in marriage to Byron 
Longnecker and on September 26, 1992, was united in marriage to August 
“Gus” Schrad at Trinity Lutheran Church. Jackie played high school 
volleyball, painted ceramics, loved watching old westerns, enjoyed 
quilting and her time at their home on Ernst Lake. Her favorite time 
was spent with her family.

Jacqueline 'Jackie' Schrad (1958-2022)

Gene F. Purvis, age 72, of McCook, NE passed away on Monday, November 7, 2022 at Great Plains Health in North Platte, NE due to a combination of health issues.

Gene was born May 21, 1950 in Portland, OR to parents Cecil and Lois Purvis.&nbsp; He was the middle child, having an older brother and sister and a younger brother and sister.&nbsp; The family later moved to Shelton, WA where Gene graduated from high school in 1969.

Gene married Diane (Kerns) Purvis in McCook of June 1, 1985. He was introduced to the people and kids in Bartley, NE as Diane was the business teacher there.&nbsp; Gene truly enjoyed the Bartley community and especially going to 6-man football games.&nbsp; He thought they were one of the fastest, high scoring games he had ever seen.

Gene worked various jobs when the family came back to Nebraska.&nbsp; He retired after 31 years at Parker Hannifan. He owned and operated Gene’s Photography for 10 years.&nbsp;

Gene enjoyed having motor homes and traveling, fishing, shooting and puttering in his garage.&nbsp; He had an extensive collection of model trains.&nbsp;

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother in law, Eugene and Betty Johnson; and a great nephew, Colton Eggelston.

Those left to celebrate his life include his wife of 37 years, Diane Purvis of McCook; along with special family members which include his brother, Don (Sherry) Purvis of Kearney, NE and their daughters, Darcie (Luke) Weiss of Kearney and Danielle (Jayson) Eggleston of Oconto, NE; great nieces and nephews, Michael and Makenzie Weiss and Colbie and Cooper Eggleston; and his newly adopted 14 year old poodle, Knuckles.

&nbsp; JAYNE L. WITZKI, 68, of Venango, NE, passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at Regent Park Nursing Home in Holyoke, CO. Jayne was born on February 8, 1954, to Marvin and Marcella (Ogden) Witzki in Holyoke, Colorado. She graduated from Venango High School with the class of 1972. Jayne had worked at the elevator in Venango for some years. She met John Potts, and the two were married in 1978. Their union was blessed with two children, Jared and Jennifer. Following a divorce, Jayne went to nursing school and became an LPN. She subsequently moved to Lexington, where she worked at the Plum Creek Nursing Home for nearly ten years. She would later return to Venango to help her dad on the farm and work at Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala. Before her nursing career ended, Jayne worked at Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant and, most recently, at Regent Park in Holyoke, CO. Jayne poured her heart into the care she gave to others. She loved and found great joy and pride in her grandchildren. She also had a deep love and care for animals, including her horses, dogs, cats, and even a couple of goats. Jayne was intensely private, but those privileged to have known her well could attest to her giving heart. She is preceded in death by her parents. Jayne is survived by her children, Jared (Melissa) Potts of Grant; Jennifer (Joe) Tatum of Grant; grandchildren, Josey, Eli, Kenna, Rally, Riggin, and Ryeker; brother, Kim (Merry) Witzki of Gering; uncles, Gary Ogden of Omaha, LaVern Ogden (Janet Schilling) of Venango; along with other relatives and friends. Jayne L Witzki (1954-2022)

Anneliese Roberts, 88, passed away Sunday November 6, 2022, at the 
Ogallala Community Hospital in Ogallala, Nebraska. Anneliese was born 
August 4, 1934, in Ismaning, Germany, to Franz and Anna Trumler. Her 
childhood was spent under the rule of Nazi Germany. During WWII, she 
attended&nbsp;school at Volkschule in Munich-Reim, Germany. She was accepted 
into a cosmetology apprenticeship. She finished her apprenticeship 
within 3 years and received her degree in cosmetology. After graduating,
 she worked as a journeyman cosmetologist until she married her husband 
and moved to the United States. She could not travel to the United 
States until she was approved for immigration into the United States. 
This took about 6 months. She received her naturalization on May 8, 
1952.

Anneliese married the love of her life, John Roberts, on March &nbsp; 17, 
1952, in Munich, Germany, and to this union six children were born. As 
her children grew, Anneliese worked as a cosmetologist in Alma, Nebraska
 and Orleans, Nebraska. She worked in this career for many years until 
her retirement. She enjoyed watching her children’s involvement in 
various sporting activities and school activities. She also enjoyed 
watching her children’s involvement with their horse showings. After 
retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband John to Arizona and 
California. Anneliese enjoyed cooking her many German dishes for her 
family. She could always make the best pot roast, cookies for her 
grandchildren, and various desserts. She also enjoyed gardening. She had
 an unbelievable green thumb which she passed onto many of her children 
and grandchildren. She grew the most beautiful flowers. She was a 
devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed 
fishing with her grandchildren. Family meant everything to her. She was a
 woman of Faith and a devoted Catholic and will be missed by everyone 
who knew her.

She resided at Fort Dodge, Kansas near Dodge City, Kansas with her 
husband John until his passing in July 2020. She cherished her time as a
 volunteer with many U.S. veterans. She enjoyed making crafts with John 
until she lost her eyesight to macular degeneration. She and her husband
 were very involved with the veteran’s poppy program for many years 
while residing at Fort Dodge, Kansas. For the past two years she resided
 in Ogallala, Nebraska with her daughter Sue and her family. She loved 
her pet dachshunds, Schnapps, Heidi, and Rusty.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was blessed with a wealth of family. She and her husband were happily married for 68 years before John was called home.

She is survived by a brother, Franz Trumler and wife Carol of Boelus,
 Nebraska; a brother-in-law, Francis Hofmeyer from California; two sons,
 Johnnie Roberts and wife Vicki of Paradise, Kansas; Donald Roberts and 
his wife Sheila of Phillipsburg, Kansas; four daughters, Anna Ledbetter 
and husband Rick of Wallard, Tennessee; Helen Rains and her husband 
Cecil of Amarillo, Texas; Sue England and husband Scott of Ogallala, 
Nebraska; and Pamela Roberts and partner, Jim Goracke of Bucklin, 
Kansas; 18 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren: and many nieces and
 nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Franz and Anna Trumler, her husband, John Roberts, and a sister, Sieglinde Hofmeyer.&nbsp;

Vigil service will be at 7:00 pm Thursday, November 17, 2022, at St. 
Andrew Church, Wright.&nbsp; Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am Friday at the 
church with Fr. Ted Stoecklein presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the 
Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Ft. Dodge.&nbsp; There will be no public viewing, 
cremation has taken place. &nbsp;Friends may sign the register from 10:00 am 
to 4:00 pm Thursday at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.

FrayJa Dawn King, 5, of North Platte, passed away November 10, 2022 at Great Plains Health.&nbsp; She was born on December 5, 2016 to Troy and Heather (Spiehs) King in Gillette, WY.

FrayJa was attending Jefferson Elementary.&nbsp; She had an amazing smile and laugh, and was always able to put you in a better mood.

Elly Smith of Gothenburg passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney at the age of 69. Elly Smith (our Mom) was born on October 4, 1953 to Roy and Dorthy Robbins, being the fourth of six children. She was raised on a farm outside of Sumner, Nebraska. She traveled after graduation, spending the majority of her time in California. Mom met the love of her life, our dad, while on a date with a different man! Mom described Dad as her mismatched chauffeur wearing plaid pants and a striped shirt. She said, "He may have mismatched but boy he could dance!" Dad danced his way into heart and married Mom on June 30, 1973. Mom worked various jobs like packing plant, hog farm, and Baldwins, but the majority of her life she was a self proclaimed Household Technician. She was sure to teach that craft to my brother and I, from plumbing, wiring, painting, or about anything Mom had asked Dad to do, that he didn't. There was absolutely nothing that woman could not do! Even if she could not, she tried, and then Dad fixed it. Mom was a loyal and loving wife, Mom, Granny, GG and Husker fan, even with their 25-year losing streak! Over the years, she enjoyed bowling, playing cards, playing pool, but most importantly time with her grandkids and great grandkids. She scheduled her entire summer around the great grandkids coming to visit. Their parents scheduled the rest of the year around fixing the bad habits she taught them! Mom was an amazing cook! Even when it looked like a dog in the pan, she made Dad's roadkill taste great. I don't know how she pulled it off but she didn't measure anything, so following her recipes is tough. A pinch of this, a dash of that, and always measure sugar with your heart. She was always sure to ask the grandkids if it was "good or sh*tty" knowing they would not get into trouble with Granny, while smirking at their parents.

Mom is survived by her loving husband, Jimmy, who she constantly gave hell to but loved with all her heart. Her daughter Terri (Tim) Ourada, son James (Loretta) Smith, grandchildren: Jared (Alicia) Ourada, Tierra (Michael) Howard, Sierra (Jon) Deshotel, Madison (Trey) Ramberg, Preston Smith and Jameson Smith. Great-Grandchildren: Carter, Alexandra, Korra, Owen, Saylor, Harbor, Sabastian, and Oliver. She is preceded in death and was met at the pearly gates by her Grandparents, Dad, Mom, two sisters, Jeanie and Donna, and nephews: Toby, Rodney, and Kyle.

Mom will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her. The family is requesting memorials be designated to upcoming medical expenses for Harbor Deshotel. Elly Smith (1953-2022)

Marcia Jodeen Carroll, 69, of Lexington, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney surrounded by her loving family and friends.

She was born on December 8, 1952, in North Platte, Nebraska to Orval and Leah (Hardin) Black. Growing up, Marcia loved spending time and working on the farm with her father. Marcia attended public schools in Tryon and graduated from Tryon High School with the class of 1971. She was united in marriage to Larry Jean Carroll in Lexington, where they made their home. Marcia worked for several years at Tenneco Monroe’s Automotive in Cozad. Marcia was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as well as the Garden Club and MS group. Marcia had a great love of flowers and enjoyed spending her time outdoors gardening. Her and Larry also spent a lot of their time traveling, going to various auctions and garage sales. Her favorite thing to collect were antique toys. Marcia was also a known animal lover and adored her cats.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Larry Carroll; brother, Richard Black and sisters, Joann Jennings, Joyce Wilkins, Janice Nielsen, Beth Ervar and Shelly Arensdorf. Survivors include her daughter, Kathy (Jason) Mead and their three children; brother, Ed Black of Tryon; sisters, Susan Crapo of South Dakota and Jerry Neal; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Randy (Tootie) Carroll of Darr; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as special friends and neighbors, Paul, Lauri, Monica, Kairee and Tara Liess of Lexington.

There will be no visitation, as the family is honoring Marcia’s wish for cremation. Burial will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established in Marcia’s honor, and kindly suggested to the MS Foundation.  </figure>Marcia Jodeen Carroll, 69, of Lexington, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney surrounded by her loving family and friends.She was born on December 8, 1952, in North Platte, Nebraska to Orval and Leah (Hardin) Black. Growing up, Marcia loved spending time and working on the farm with her father. Marcia attended public schools in Tryon and graduated from Tryon High School with the class of 1971. Marcia Jodeen Carroll (1952-2022)

&nbsp; Gordon Ray Fischer was born Feb. 26th, 1949, in Benkelman, NE to Henry and Olga (Lunzmann) Fischer. Welcoming him home was his brother Allan. He grew up on the farm south of Wauneta. Those years fostered his love of animals, most especially cattle and pigs. Gordon loved tagging along with Allan wherever he went. They hunted together, got interested in cars together and enjoyed typical boy stuff together. Gordon attended St. Paul’s Parochial School and a rural county grade school and graduated high school from Wauneta, NE. Gordon tried football and track in high school but that ended quickly when he broke his knee and had to be in Denver’s Children's Hospital to get his knee repaired. He liked to brag that when it broke it sounded like a gun going off. Gordon graduated from Wauneta High School in 1967. Gordon married in 1976 and that union was blessed with one child, Courtney. On June 8th, 1991, Gordon married the love of his life, Cindy Raasch. To this union they welcomed 2 sons, Ryan Lee and Logan Wayne. Gordon and Cindy were married 31 years at the time of his passing. Gordon was employed at Frenchman Valley Coop starting at the Wauneta Elevator and retiring from the fertilizer department in Feb. 2014. Gordon loved to take long rides in the country to check how the crops were doing. Gordon had a passion for his Lord and he and Cindy are members of Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was adamant that he be able to watch Holy Cross Lutheran TV no matter where he happened to be at the time it aired. Everything came to a stop until the service was over. Throughout his life, animals played a very special role. He was happiest when he was working with his herd of Angus cows on the farm south of Wauneta. He often considered his animals his “Other Children.” The farm was also where you could find his pigs, cats, chickens and on occasion any number of fish in the stock tank. Gordon wanted to be at home when he passed, and that wish was honored. He passed away November 7 at his home with family surrounding him. He was 73 years old. Survivors include his wife Cindy, children Ryan Fischer and wife Danielle of Bennett NE, Logan Fischer of McCook NE and his children Klayton and Lincoln. Terry William Brokaw, 58, passed away November 8, 2022 at home.&nbsp; He was born January 13, 1964 in Norfolk, NE to Leslie and Clara (Timmerman) Brokaw.&nbsp; In 1965, Terry moved with his family to Central City, NE where he attended school.&nbsp; He graduated from Central City High School with the class of 1983.&nbsp; Terry was a member of the Standard Quarter Horse Association and a long-time member of 4-H.&nbsp; He showed horses for quite a few years.&nbsp; In 1985, Terry moved to North Platte. Terry worked various jobs in North Platte and the surrounding areas.&nbsp; He worked for the local Do-It Center.&nbsp; Most recently he was a school bus driver for Hershey Public Schools and would drive the students to events all over the state.&nbsp; Terry was also a substitute bus driver for North Platte Public Schools.&nbsp; During the summers, he worked for Scofield’s Peach Stand. Terry was baptized in the Christian faith and was a devout Christian.&nbsp; He was very involved in the church and was a volunteer and great role model for many groups and programs.&nbsp; Terry went across the country and abroad to serve missions and help others.&nbsp; Terry was on the board of directors for Open Sky Unlimited.org. He was formerly on pastoral staff at Harvest Christian and Celebrate Recovery.&nbsp; Terry Invested his life in everything he did regardless of the work involved or service to others in ministry.

Terry is survived by sisters, Connie Dettman of Central City, Cindy Hines of North Platte; brother, Larry Brokaw of Mullen; numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Clara Brokaw; step-father, Loyal Ruhl; brothers, Randy and Rick; sisters, Karen Brokaw and Twila Widman; grandparents, Clarence and Cecella Brokaw, George and Myrtle Timmerman; nephews, Leslie and Jacob Brokaw.
