Harry Oscar Mott passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, March 25, 2024, in Ansley Nebraska at the age of 83. Harry, the son of Harold Redman Mott and Hazel Mae (Keller) Mott was born on February 1, 1941, on a farm in Oconto, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Harry attended high school in Mason City and Ansley until the 12th&nbsp;Grade. Not long after he left high school Harry met his wife Vivian (Love) Mott at a dinner in Loup City, Nebraska, Vivian and Harry fell in love and were joined together in marriage on June 13, 1964. The two had a happy marriage and during that marriage five children were born: William “Bill”, Myron, Everett, Valda, and Bobbie.

Harry was a jack of all trades and as he would tell you a master of none, but he truly had a love for driving eighteen wheelers. His love of trucking took him many places including Canada and Mexico and made many friends along the way. When he wasn’t trucking Harry spent time with family and friends, loved to be outside, and would often be found with a fishing pole in his hand and eventually toting one or two of his many grandchildren with him. As he got older, he would often be found “making his rounds” as his kids and grandkids would say, this usually meant that he was out checking on his family and friends in Ansley.

Harry was loved by so many and known to give someone the shirt off his back and to always help anyone who needed it whether it was helping someone on the side of the road fix their tire or helping friends with their farm work but, most of all he was known for his profound love for his family.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents Harold Mott and Hazel (Keller) Mott, Brother Harold Mott (Dot Mott), Sister Aleatha Mott (Howell)&nbsp;(Abe Howell), Brother Vernon Mott (Clysta Mott), Brother Joe Mott (Molly Mott), Son Myron Mott and others.

Harry Mott (1941-2024)

Margaret F. Berry (Marge) passed away on March 23, 2024, at the age of 81, after a brief illness and was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy of caring and serving others. Her battle with medical issues in recent years showed her courage in facing challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Margaret was strong, brave, and determined until the end.

Margaret spent her childhood in rural Perkins County on the Nebraska family farm. Working alongside two younger brothers, it was where she acquired the hardworking nature and ambitious spirit she carried with her throughout her life.

Margaret was the first of three children born to Alfred and Mildred Lempke. She attended schools in both Wallace and Grainton with her senior year of high school being at Grant, Nebraska. She graduated at a young age and attended med tech school in Denver before marrying Bob Schneider. Together, they had two girls, Sandy and Kristi, and made their home in Holyoke, Colorado, for several years. After a divorce, she and her young family continued to reside in Holyoke.

Many people met Margaret during her tenure at Farmers State Bank (now First Pioneer National Bank), where she worked for several decades after a short time as a food service aide at Holyoke's Regent Park nursing and long-term care facility. She also supplemented her full-time work schedule with several part-time jobs, including waitressing at The Skillet restaurant. After retiring from full-time employment, she worked part-time at the Heginbotham Library for several years, which combined her love of people and reading.

In July of 1999, Margaret married Mark Berry, whom she met through a shared love of square dancing. They enjoyed 25 years together in Lamar, Nebraska, before her death.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Margaret, and her two daughters meant the world to her. Although she often worked multiple jobs to support her family, she always managed to find time to attend her children's school activities and sporting events. She was their best cheerleader at the club swimming competitions and was always available to help with homework or 4-H projects.

She had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities. She adored animals and often adopted stray cats or small dogs that needed a forever home. Suzy, Lizzy, and Lucky were some of her favorite four-legged companions and held a special place in her heart. Her love of reading, developed at a young age, never went away and was something she passed along to her two daughters. Although she always claimed that she wasn't creative, talented, or artistic, she proved otherwise, often producing award-winning hand-embroidered linens at county fairs. She enjoyed baking, and her breads and pie crusts made from scratch were always requested by those who had tasted her creations. Her pleasant personality was contagious to everyone she met. She loved to socialize and was active in several community organizations throughout her life, including Meals on Wheels, Friends of the Library, and the Imperial VFW Ladies Auxiliary in her later years. She often volunteered at various community activities and events and felt that it was important to serve and support her local community.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Mark Berry, and his two adult children (Tammy and Kelly); daughters, Sandy Engle (Denny) of Fort Morgan, CO, and Kristi Birdsall of Arvada, CO; brother, David Lempke (Mary) of Wallace, Nebraska, and their children Celeste, Jennifer, Phillip, and John Paul.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Mildred Lempke; brother, Vincent Lempke; and nephew, Ezra Lempke.

Barbara&nbsp;Foster peacefully passed away at home in North Platte on March 24, 2024, at the age of 70.

Barb was born in Ogallala on March 30, 1953, to James and Nellie Smith. &nbsp;She grew up in Ogallala and Westminster, CO, and graduated from Westminster High School. &nbsp;

Barb was married to Patrick Sands. &nbsp;They had two children, Christina and Michael, and later divorced. &nbsp;Barb then moved back to Nebraska with the kids. &nbsp;They lived in North Platte, then Hastings where she attended college. &nbsp;After graduating from Hastings Community College they returned to North Platte where Barb went to work for the Lincoln County Court House in 1992 and retired from there in 2017.

Barb met Frank Foster and they married on February 5, 1983, and had a son, Gavin. &nbsp;They were together 32 years when Frank died in 2015.

Barb enjoyed camping, traveling, reading books and watching the Denver Broncos. &nbsp;She especially liked being with her family.

Along with her husband, Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Nellie Smith; and brother, Ronald Smith.

She is survived by her children, Christina Nelson (Jeff) and Gavin Foster of North Platte and Michael Sands (Kristen) of Lincoln; grandchildren, Jordan (Forrest), Elizabeth, Mackenzie (Erik), Alex, Michaela, Kash and Kora; great-grandkids, Jeffery, Stella, Deacon, Harper and Ellie; her brothers, Gary Smith (Carrie) of Lincoln and Richard Smith of Omaha; and other family.

Barbara Foster (1953-2024)

&nbsp; Ray Pafford, Sr. of Hershey passed away March 23, 2024, at Great Plains Health at the age of 91.

Ray, the son of James and Edna Pafford, was born in Longmont, CO, on December 23, 1932.&nbsp; He grew up in Wyoming, served in the U.S. Navy for a couple years, then worked various jobs in different states.

On October 30, 1971, Ray married Barbara Kail in Greeley, CO. After living in many places they settled in Hershey in 1987.

Ray enjoyed fishing, dancing, golfing, gambling with his friend, Jean, and football.&nbsp; He also liked having backyard barbecues and being with his family.&nbsp; Ray was liked by everyone he met. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barb; his parents, Jim and Edna; and daughters, Robin Burns and Mary Williams. Ray is survived by his sons, Ray, Jr., of Hershey and Rodger of Texas; stepsons, Riley Banderet of Oregon and Roger Banderet of Ogallala; son-in-law, Kevin Burns of Arizona; siblings, Dugan (Peg) of Wyoming and Mabel of Colorado; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren and other family.

Phyllis Jean (Morris) Waddell, age 92, formerly of Indianola, NE, passed away Friday, March 22, 2024 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, NE.&nbsp;

Phyllis was born August 8, 1931 to parents Fred and Cora (Baxter) Morris. She was one of two children.&nbsp;

Phyllis attended and graduated from McCook with the class of 1948.&nbsp;

Phyllis married Charles “Wayne” Waddell on September 17, 1950 in McCook. They were blessed with three children.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Over the years, she enjoyed raising and caring for her children, cooking, gardening, and watching TV. She will be remembered for having a quick wit and the ability to make people smile.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Phyllis was well loved by her family and all those who cared for her. That love was always returned.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Phyllis was proceeded in death by her parents; husband, Charles “Wayne” Waddell; as well as her brother, Oscar.&nbsp;

Those left to celebrate her life include children, Debra (John) Bilyeu of Pulaski, TN; Vicki (Gene) McKain of Trenton, NE; and John Waddell of McCook, NE.&nbsp;

Phyllis J. Waddell (1931-2024)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dearest loved one, Matthew William Hoffman, formerly of McCook, NE, who unexpectedly passed away March 22, 2024 in Kearney, NE at 20 years young.

Matt, as he was known, was born on September 30, 2003 to Stephanie Sydow in Kearney, NE. Matt was a momma’s boy, the sweet baby of five children, and a dear brother to Ashley, Amber, Aubrey, and Aric. Matt spent the majority of his childhood growing up in McCook, NE, where he impacted many lives in the community. He graduated from McCook High School in 2021, a great source of pride given his experience with dyslexia and dysgraphia.

Matthew was currently employed at the Embecta factory in Holdrege but was tenaciously working towards being self-employed. Matthew was known for his entrepreneurial drive and spirit, a gift that cannot be taught. He started many business ventures individually and with his friends, from drop shipping and investing to selling Spearmint Lifesavers to his high school classmates after realizing the demand from his personal inventory. Matt was known for his exceptional work ethic and determination and was cared for by all he worked with. While employed at the family nursery, Common Scents, Matthew planted many trees in the community and surrounding areas - a legacy that is sure to grow, prosper, and live on through his efforts to enrich this community.

Outside of work, Matt enjoyed gaming with friends, longboarding, hitting the gym, fishing, hanging out with his fur babies, Callie and Klaus, and spending quality time with his friends and family. Matthew had a passion for marine life (especially sharks), and was lovingly known as “Shark King.”

Matthew was truly unique— he had a brilliant smile and infectious laugh, a selfless heart, and a calming presence; all treasures we have been lucky to know. He had a special connection with animals and a desire to leave the world a better place.

 </figure>It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dearest loved one, Matthew William Hoffman, formerly of McCook, NE, who unexpectedly passed away March 22, 2024 in Kearney, NE at 20 years young.Matt, as he was known, was born on September 30, 2003 to Stephanie Sydow in Kearney, NE. Matt was a momma’s boy, the sweet baby of five children, and a dear brother to Ashley, Amber, Aubrey, and Aric. Matt spent the majority of his childhood growing up in McCook, NE, where he impacted many lives in the community. He graduated from McCook High School in 2021, a great source of pride given his experience with dyslexia and dysgraphia.Matthew was currently employed at the Embecta factory in Holdrege but was tenaciously working towards being self-employed. Matthew was known for his entrepreneurial drive and spirit, a gift that cannot be taught. He started many business ventures individually and with his friends, from drop shipping and investing to selling Spearmint Lifesavers to his high school classmates after realizing the demand from his personal inventory. Matt was known for his exceptional work ethic and determination and was cared for by all he worked with. While employed at the family nursery, Common Scents, Matthew planted many trees in the community and surrounding areas - a legacy that is sure to grow, prosper, and live on through his efforts to enrich this community.Outside of work, Matt enjoyed gaming with friends, longboarding, hitting the gym, fishing, hanging out with his fur babies, Callie and Klaus, and spending quality time with his friends and family. Matthew had a passion for marine life (especially sharks), and was lovingly known as “Shark King.”Matthew was truly unique— he had a brilliant smile and infectious laugh, a selfless heart, and a calming presence; all treasures we have been lucky to know. Jonathan “Jon” Michael Castillo, 48, of North Platte, Nebraska passed away March 21, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family and close personal friends. &nbsp;Jon was born September 9, 1975, to Pete and Eva Castillo at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, Nebraska.

Jon grew up in North Platte and attended North Platte Public Schools, graduating from North Platte High School with the Class of 1994. After graduation, Jon attended Southeast Community&nbsp;College in Lincoln, Nebraska before returning home to North Platte, and eventually hiring out&nbsp;with Union Pacific Railroad. &nbsp;Jon spent 20 years railroading and worked several different positions that included being a Yard Foreman, Yard Hostler, Locomotive Engineer, and a Terminal&nbsp;Train Dispatcher. Although Jon was accomplished at all of them it was his calm voice over the radio&nbsp;that guided so many train crews in and out of Bailey Yard. &nbsp;During his time on the railroad, Jon met some of his closest friends. On May 9, 2003, Jon was united in marriage to Stephanie Elliott, and to&nbsp;this union brought two children, Keanan Zachary Castillo and Kaley Jo Castillo. &nbsp;Jon loved his kids more than anything in the world and was often found coaching Kaley at softball, fishing with&nbsp;them both or cheering on Keanan at his track and cross country meets. Jon was also very fond of&nbsp;his late dogs, Riley and Kobe, and his current and faithful yellow lab, Sir Lucus. &nbsp;Jon spent time as a member of both the UTU Local 200 and UTUE Local 7 Unions while employed at Union Pacific&nbsp;Railroad. &nbsp;He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting, being out on his boat fishing, playing softball and spending time with his enormous circle of friends. &nbsp;Jon was also a loving brother to his oldest sister Rhonda and older brother Scott. &nbsp;He was a beloved Uncle to Kelanie (Joe), Tanner (Charlie), Abigail, Graci, and Kaci Jo as well as a Great Uncle to James Brody, Rylee, Eva, Cohn, and&nbsp;Avalyn Jo. Most importantly, Jon was “dad” to his two children, Keanan and Kaley.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Eva Castillo; best friends, Zach Peters and Doug White.

Jon is survived by his two children, Keanan Castillo (Sam Bales), Kaley Jo Castillo and his faithful dog, Luke, all of North Platte; his two siblings, Rhonda Castillo (Allen Parr), of North Platte,&nbsp;Scott Castillo, of Omaha; his nieces and nephews; and his countless and incredibly amazing circle&nbsp;of friends. Jon’s family remains speechless as to the brother and sisterhood of his friends. They&nbsp;wrapped Jon in their arms, loved him and his kids like we have never witnessed. They will remain&nbsp;close to our hearts forever.

Charlotte Rae Jackson (1958-2024)

Sherman Auten Hirsch, aged 93, passed away at his home in North Platte on March 15, 2024. &nbsp;He was born on August 17, 1930, in Merna, NE to Lester and Iva (Auten) Hirsch.

Sherman graduated from Kearney State College and joined the United States Army, serving in the Korean War as a forward observer in forward artillery. &nbsp;Upon being honorably discharged, he pursued and earned a teaching degree and worked as a social studies and biology teacher. &nbsp;Sherman married Vivian Posten in 1950 and the couple had four children: Karen, Stephen, Mark, and Jean. &nbsp; On August 18, 1989, Sherman married Marilyn A. (Myerchin) Brownell in Julesburg, CO.

In 1988, Sherman furthered his education career, becoming a school administrator. &nbsp;He served in several rural Nebraska school districts, including Hall School, north of North Platte, as the superintendent. &nbsp;In 1997, after being retired for 2 years, Sherman missed being in the environment of education so he accepted a position as Lincoln County School superintendent until 2001 when county schools were eliminated. &nbsp;Sherman thoroughly enjoyed learning, teaching, and building friendships with his students and colleagues. &nbsp;He possessed a kind, polite, and gentle nature and was an avid conversationalist. &nbsp;Sherman was an active member of the Lincoln County Democrats. &nbsp;For the better part of his 93 years, he was giving back to his community and his country, as a soldier and as an educator. &nbsp;Sherman brought his energy and experience to a wide range of local volunteering programs, from ringing bells for the Salvation Army to participating in Kiwanis projects.

Survivors of Sherman include his children, Karen (Jim) Dodge, Stephen Hirsch, Mark (Cindy) Hirsch, Jean (Randy) Pierce; 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren.

Those that preceded him in death include his parents; wife, Marilyn; sisters, Leatha and Verna.

Sherman Auten Hirsch (1930-2024)

&nbsp; Gary Eugene Gifford, 84, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on January 11, 1940, in Norton, Kansas, to James O. and Rosalie A. (Kjar) Gifford. He graduated from Mount Carmel High School in Denver, Colorado with the class of 1958. After high school, Gary joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country while assigned to the 101st Airborne and 1st Special Forces Group. During his time in the military, he also trained with the Army Rangers and Navy Seals. While serving in Okinawa, Gary was asked to be in the opening scenes of the war movie "Merrill's Marauders" that was being filmed there at the time. After his enlistment, he returned to Denver where he began working at Safeway while attending a Trade School studying computer programming and electronics.&nbsp;On September 27, 1958, Gary was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Saindon at St. Dominic Catholic Parish in Denver, Colorado. Five children were blessed to this union: Joseph, James, Jeffrey, Brenda, and Christina. In 1965, Gary and his family moved to Lexington, Nebraska, where he began a long career at Reach Electronics Inc. He worked for the company for 40 years before retiring. Gary became involved with the Heartland Military Museum of Military Vehicles in Lexington while still working for Reach, and following his retirement, Gary took over as the director of the museum.

In his younger years, Gary loved staying active and partook in various activities. He played for a minor league baseball team in Denver, learned how to box as well as spending his days rock climbing. Later on, he joined a band called "The Country Lads" where he was the guitarist and backup singer. He enjoyed roping as well as riding a good cutting horse. At one point, Gary rode with the Lexington Plumcreekers, an equestrian drill team, performing in rodeos and parades across the Midwest in the 1970's. In his older years, he found a love for the meticulous craft of creating model and electric trains. He loved spending quality time with his family and children, but he always held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchild. He will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Elizabeth J. (Betty) Gifford of Lexington; his children, Joseph D. (Mary) Gifford of Aurora, Colorado, James D. Gifford of Cozad, Jeffrey D. Gifford of Goodyear, Arizona, Brenda M. (Drake) Ferjak of Fountain, Colorado, and Christina A. &nbsp; &nbsp; David Todd "Dave" Fjelseth, of Indianola, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2024, in Alma, Nebraska. &nbsp; He was born on May 5, 1951, to Clarion Elwyn "Clare" and Dorothy Evelyn "Tomi" (Thompson) Fjelseth at Camp Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. &nbsp;His family resided in South Dakota until moving to Gillette, Wyoming when Dave was in High School.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Dave excelled as a football player in high school and graduated from Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wyoming in 1969.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Dave married Karen K Carson in 1972 (they later divorced) to this union two daughters, Tia Dawn and Sarah Anne, were born.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Dave resided in Gillette, working in the oil and coal industry, until he relocated to Colorado in 1995.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Dave met the love of his life, Carol Blackman, in Colorado in 1996. &nbsp;Together they owned and managed two restaurants in Colorado until moving to Carol's hometown of Indianola, Nebraska to purchase a local legend, The Rocket Inn. &nbsp;Together with special friends and family, Kathy Osterman, Scott Kasch, Matt Dack, and Nick Dunn - Dave and Carol ran The Rocket Inn for 21 years, until retirement.

&nbsp; &nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepsons, Greg Blackman and Kevin Blackman; and his brother-in-law, Tom Stritt.

&nbsp; &nbsp; He is survived by Carol Blackman; his brothers, Jeff (Sally) Fjelseth and Mark (Vicky) Fjelseth; his daughters, Tia Knapp (of Gillette, WY) and Sarah Joseph (of Loveland, CO); his grandchildren, Max Knapp, Mariah Knapp, Victor Blackman, Rohan Joseph, and Karuna Joseph; his mother-in-law, Alice Mae Stritt and other in-laws of the Stritt clan; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved golden retrievers.

&nbsp; &nbsp; A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in Indianola, NE on May 5th (Dave's birthday) and ashes will be spread in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming in July, where he loved to go fly fishing.

David Todd Fjelseth (1951-2024)

Daniel Lane Koch, 70, of North Platte, Nebraska passed away March 20, 2024 at his home in North Platte. &nbsp;He was born July 4, 1953 to Edward J and LaVera A. (Williams) Koch in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Dan graduated from North Platte High School with the class of 1971. &nbsp;He entered the Army in 1972 where he was a military policeman stationed at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. Dan received an Honorable Discharge, then went to Hawaii for a short time where he purchased his beloved 1969 Harley Police Special “Old Black.”&nbsp; &nbsp;Upon returning from Hawaii, he and Old Black traveled across the United States from California to Maine, down to Key West, and back to Nebraska. In May of 1978, he hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad in Council Bluffs, Iowa. &nbsp;He was united in marriage to Lisa Coffman in 1991. &nbsp;Dan was a member of the American Veterans’ Motorcycle Club for 35 years. &nbsp;He enjoyed riding Harleys and his time running trains for the Union Pacific. Dan loved his club brothers, classic cars, bluegrass music, and his “Attack Morkie” Tater. &nbsp;Dan will be remembered for his great sense of humor.

He is survived by his children, Lisa (Jesus) Fresquez, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Desirae Coffman, North Platte, Nebraska and Gary (Luci) Koch, North Platte, Nebraska; 13 grand-children, Isaiah, Terrell, Calvin, Jamall, Lebron, Alex, Maylina, Rosalie, Ezekiel, Joclynn, Kaden, Dylan, Silas; several great-grandchildren; siblings, Michael D. Daniel Lane Koch (1953-2024)

Stephen H. Dowson, 83, passed away peacefully on March 21, at Ogallala Community Hospital. He was born May 29, 1940, in Denver, Colorado, to Harry and Halcyon Dowson. Steve loved Ogallala for the better part of 40 years. Twenty of those coming on weekends and then making it his permanent home 20 years ago. He married his lovely bride Trudy on February 19, 1977 in Denver, Colorado. Steve was owner/operator at Empire Oldsmobile-Honda Inc. in Denver, Colorado. He had active affiliations with the Rotary Club of Denver and the Colorado Auto Dealers Association. His greatest passions were cars and trains; as well as, a collection of belt buckles. He was very outgoing and always ready for a good time. Steve graduated from East High School, Denver, Colorado. He then enlisted in ROTC at Wentworth Military Academy, Lexington, Missouri. That led to him joining the Colorado National Guard while attending the University of Wyoming and University of Denver. He was active in the United States Air Force for a brief period of time.

He is survived by his wife, Trudy, a younger brother, Dean (Tracy) Dowson, a daughter, Holly Emick, a son Dean (Mandy) Dowson and grandchildren Mckinna, Kaylee and Harry and nephew Roy (Kristen). &nbsp;Those who pre-deceased Steve were his mother and father, Harry and Halcyon, brother, Roy, and son, Stephen.

Visitation will be Monday, March 25, 2024 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm with the family greeting friends from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Draucker Funeral Home Chapel. Vernene Mae (Lynes) Kanive peacefully passed away at Mount Carmel Home in Kearney on March 22, 2024, at the age of 70.

Vernene, the daughter of Clive and Treva Lynes, was born in Sutherland on February 5, 1954. &nbsp;She graduated from Hershey High School in 1972 then attended Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte. &nbsp;She was an avid member of the Salvation Army church.

Vernene had a love for plants. &nbsp;When she was younger, she enjoyed playing in the flower beds with her mother and, like all the women in her family, Vernene liked house plants. &nbsp;She also enjoyed crafts of all kinds and had really taken up painting ceramics in her later years. &nbsp;

Vernene was proud of her son, Lonnie, for being in the military and passed her love for houseplants on to her daughter, Carrie. &nbsp;She absolutely adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ezra and Leitha Lynes and Herbert and Elizabeth Leach; her parents, Clive and Treva Lynes; sister, Mavis Poland; and infant granddaughter, Nichole Russell.

Vernene is survived by her children, Carrie Ritter (Tom) of Holdrege and Lonnie Bruce (Kimberly) of Colorado; siblings, Arlis Lynes (Bev) of California, Deb Nelson (Kevin) of Omaha, and Lois Lynes-Miles and CJ Lynes (Kandi) of North Platte; her grandchildren, Raymond Howell (Dani), Clive Russell (Dana), Stacey Brown (Conner), Stefanie Russell (Matt Howell), Anthony Russell (Bre Judd), David Bruce, Katrina Bruce, Samuel Bruce, Riley Edwards (Christian) and Tristan Hassman; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other family members.

Vernene Mae Kanive (1954-2024)

Shirley&nbsp;Haase&nbsp;Turner passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024, at the age of 83.

Shirley was born to Dean and Carolyn (Diener) Haase at their home at 729 S. Vine Street in North Platte on June 1, 1940. &nbsp;She had one brother, Vern, who was 3 ½ years her senior. &nbsp;Shirley attended McKinley Elementary School then North Platte Junior and Senior High Schools, graduating with the Class of 1958. &nbsp;During her junior and senior years, Shirley took dance lessons and worked as an assistant instructor at Nettie Jean's Dance Studio. &nbsp;She later helped teach ballroom dance for a number of years.

After graduating from high school, Shirley attended Parks School of Business in Denver and worked as a billing and filing clerk. &nbsp;While in Denver she met and married Ronald Turner. &nbsp;Ron worked for Martin Marietta Company where they built the Titan Missile Defense System. &nbsp;He was later transferred with the company so they moved to Wichita, KS, where he continued working with the Missile Project.

Ron and Shirley had three children: Steven, Timothy and Angela. &nbsp;In 1967 the couple divorced and Shirley returned to North Platte with her three small children. &nbsp;She went to work for her parents in their Ace Hardware Store and continued to work there for over 38 years. &nbsp;After her parents retired in 1983, Shirley and her brother continued to manage and work the family-owned store until it was sold in 2005.

Shirley was a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church in North Platte where she was baptized and confirmed at the age of 13 and later became a member of the Methodist Women.

Over the years Shirley was active in the North Platte Community. &nbsp;She was a member of the Chamber Hostesses, Community Improvement Committee, Parents Without Partners, Altrusa International, and Sassies (a chapter of the Red Hat Society). &nbsp;

She loved dancing, sewing, cake decorating, gardening and watching Husker football! &nbsp;She also loved decorating and wearing hats; she wore one most Sundays for church. &nbsp;Shirley especially loved her pets, Frostie (her Silver Persian) and Little Bit and Gracie (her little white Chihuahuas). &nbsp; &nbsp;But her greatest loves were her family and traveling, she loved camping and taking her children and grandchildren to Walt Disney World.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Dean and Carolyn Haase; her brother, Vern; and infant son, Robert.

She is survived by her children, Steven Turner (Debbie) of Estes Park, CO, Timothy Turner and Angie Turner (Roma) of North Platte; four grandsons and two great- granddaughters; her nieces, Jennifer and Julie Haase; as well as several cousins, other family and friends.

Shirley Turner (1940-2024)

Lifetime Sutherland resident, Melvin Eckhoff, peacefully passed away on March 21, 2024, at the age of 93.

Melvin, the son of Jewel and Alva Eckhoff, was born south of Sutherland on July 25, 1930. &nbsp;He attended District West 18 school then Sutherland High School, graduating with the class of 1948. &nbsp;

At the age of 14, Melvin started working on farms in the Sutherland area and was employed by the Beveridge brothers. &nbsp;As a young man he also worked on the Lawler farms and for Spencer and Dale Edmisten.

Melvin enlisted into the U.S. Army and served from 1951-1953. &nbsp;He was a tank mechanic and spent 13 months of his service in Germany. &nbsp;After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned home and was a truck driver for the Union Pacific Railroad until he became an employee of Platte Valley Public Power and Irrigation District, which later became Nebraska Public Power District. &nbsp;Melvin started as a laborer and worked his way up to be Hydraulic Foreman before retiring in 1992 after serving 36 years with the company.

In 1954 Melvin met Iola Goodwin at a dance and they married on August 21, 1955, at the Hershey United Methodist Church. &nbsp;They lived their entire married life in the Sutherland community and had three children. &nbsp;They were active in the community and their church. &nbsp;Melvin was a member of the Sutherland Methodist Church and American Legion Post #208 for over 55 years and was a member of the VFW and Lions Club.&nbsp;

Melvin loved working with cattle and horses and volunteering with the Sutherland Rodeo. &nbsp;In 1957 he began helping out as an "un-rigger" (taking the saddles and riggings off the animals after they had been ridden) and continued volunteering for 63 years. &nbsp;He was recognized for his service at the 1990 rodeo and presented with a specially made belt buckle and later received a plaque for his 63 years as an un-rigger. Melvin was also honored as the 2014 July 4th Sutherland Grand Marshal, an honor that his father received in the '80s.

Iola and Melvin made many trips to Florida over the years to visit Randy and his family. &nbsp;After his retirement, he and Iola enjoyed traveling during the winter months to the southwestern states and during the summers, Melvin worked for Jim Haugland Farm and Ranch. &nbsp;After his son moved back home from Florida, he loved spending time with his great-grandchildren. &nbsp;His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a highlight of his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Iola; parents, Alva and Jewel; brother, Bob (Rosalee) Eckhoff; parents-in-law, McKinley and Deena Goodwin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lyle Goodwin, Mary (Frank) Russell, Wanda (Wilbur) Lightfritz, Cormae (Harold) Whitaker and Dale (Linda) Goodwin; son, Terry Eckhoff; infant daughter, Nanette Eckhoff; and infant grandson, Bryan Gifford.

Melvin is survived by his son, Randy (Brenda) Eckhoff; grandkids, Melissa Eckhoff, Dustin Eckhoff, Amanda (Josh) Dack and Jeremy (Shaye) Gifford; great-grandkids, Aspen Lenz, Billy Wilken, Everett and Violet Dack, and Graham, Bennett and Ruth Gifford; sister-in-law, Altine Goodwin; numerous nieces and nephews and his many friends.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, at the Sutherland Methodist Church. &nbsp;Burial with military honors will follow in Riverview Cemetery. &nbsp;Visitation is Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and with family greeting from 4-6 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel at C &amp; Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. Melvin Eckhoff (1930-2024)

&nbsp; &nbsp; Jeffrey Alan Pinkerton was born on December 16, 1970 to Judy Hendrix and Dennis Pinkerton at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman, Nebraska. &nbsp;He attended school in Benkelman, graduating from Dundy County High School with the class of 1989. &nbsp;Jeff furthered his education at McCook Community College, earning his associate degree in 1991.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Jeff lived his entire adult life in McCook, Nebraska. &nbsp;McCook is also where he met and married his wife, Kimberly (Wurm) Pinkerton. &nbsp;Jeff worked at McCook Community College for many years in the maintenance department; keeping things clean and running was a true passion. &nbsp;His love of working with his hands also transferred to his hobbies. &nbsp;Jeff would work on anything with a motor, especially motorcycles; he was happiest when repairing or riding any type of motorcycle. &nbsp;He could fix and build about anything, he was a good friend to have if you were working on a remodeling project! &nbsp;Jeff’s memory will live on in the countless woodworking and epoxy projects that he created for friends and family.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Jeffrey Pinkerton passed away at his home in McCook on Monday, March 18, 2024. &nbsp;He was 53 years of age.

Jeffrey Alan Pinkerton (1970-2024)

Jeannie J. Greenwood, 72, of Wellfleet, Nebraska passed away March 17, 2024 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Kearney, Nebraska. &nbsp;She was born January 14, 1952 to Bert and Alice (Melvin) Roberson, in Lewellen, Nebraska.

Jeannie grew up in Lewellen and attended school there. &nbsp;She met Dennis Greenwood when she worked at Mr. K’s Country on East 4th Street in North Platte.&nbsp; Jeannie loved to go with Dennis where ever he was playing in the band and be there with him.&nbsp; Times that she couldn't go watch she didn't like it and made sure to let Dennis know she wasn't happy.&nbsp; They were married February 25, 1984 at St. James Catholic Church in Curtis, Nebraska. &nbsp;They just celebrated 40 years of marriage. &nbsp;Jeannie worked at several nursing homes, including Sunset Haven in Curtis for over 20 years. &nbsp;She was always remembered for her loving care of the patients and their families that she cared for. &nbsp;Her family was the center of her life, especially her grandchildren when she became “Nana” to Emma and Jackson. &nbsp;Some of Jeannie’s most memorable highlights from this past year; supporting Emma with her academics, watching Jackson score his first homerun in baseball and his first touchdown in football, and celebrating with Dennis as he walked their daughter Kerrin down the aisle to be united in marriage with Corey. &nbsp;She loved her family dearly and they will all miss her. &nbsp;

Jeannie J. Roberson Greenwood (1952-2024)

Deborah Hidy, RN, born on June 27, 1957. A caring and loving woman devoted to her family and her profession, Deborah left us all too soon on March 16, 2024.

Deb was a beacon of love and support in our lives, and she leaves behind many loved ones who will remember her fondly. She is survived by her cherished husband, Curtis Hidy, her caring siblings, Phyllis Peterson, Michael Peterson, and Diane Baumgartner. Additionally, Deborah will be remembered by her brother-in-law Pete Baumgartner, sister-in-law Rebecca Peterson, and her beloved nephews Brady Baumgartner, Benjamin Baumgartner, and Zachary Peterson.

Deb was a dedicated woman, always striving for the best. She graduated from Brady High School in Brady, NE, in 1975. Following her passion for helping others, Deborah continued her education at St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1978. Her commitment to the well-being of others was a testament to her character and her nurturing spirit.

Then in 1987, life led her to Curtis Hidy; they got married and created countless beautiful memories together. An important one being the frequent visits back to their family in Nebraska, which was among Deb's favorite vacation spots. Not just for the scenic beauty of her home state, but for the familial bonds that were woven there. In remembrance of Deb, we recall her favorite color, purple, a hue that echoed her elegance, and the calmness she brought in every situation. We remember her not just with tears of sorrow but with the warmth of countless memories.

She was predeceased by her loving parents, Lyle and Barbra Peterson, their memories still holding a special place in her heart.

The world may have lost a generous soul, but the heavens gained an angel. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been touched by Deb's kindness in their lives. And finally to our friend Maria, without you being in our lives, Deb's last few years would not and could not have been as comfortable and happy as they were. There are no words that can express the gratitude that both Deb and I have for all that you have done.

Deborah Hidy (1957-2024)

Julie Leigh Todd, 67, of North Platte, Nebraska passed away March 15, 2024 at Great Plains Health in North Platte in the loving presence of family. She was born November 18, 1956, North Platte, Nebraska to Ima Joyce Ferguson and Richard Riggs Todd.

Julie grew up in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School with the class of 1975. After attending Kearney State College, Julie began a lifelong career as a caregiver. She cared for special needs children and adults at Bethphage in Axtell, Nebraska, Margaret Walters School in Arvada, Colorado, and with ENCOR, now known as Duet, in Omaha, Nebraska. &nbsp;A serious illness in 1996 interrupted her working life for many years as she fought to recover her health. Stubbornly determined, Julie returned to work at the North Platte Telegraph where she was voted Readers’ Choice #1 Newspaper Carrier. Julie turned once again to caregiving in the latter years of her life, providing loving, compassionate home care to an Alzheimer’s patient.

Julie was known by her family and many friends as sweet, loving, and considerate. She was tender and compassionate with the many people she cared for. Julie never missed a niece or nephew’s birthday, often sending a hand-made gift. She was loyal to her mother, and was a source of joy, smiles and wonderment to her siblings. She endured loving teasing, and knew how to dish it out, too. Julie often took better care of others than she did herself, reflecting her unselfish approach to those she cared for or loved.

Julie was also known for her toughness and resilience. Illnesses often tried to slow her down, but her stubborn spirit fought back and kept her going. Once, when she was assaulted, Julie responded with kicking, clawing and screaming and fought off her attacker, who fled. Questioned by police, her assailant asked “Who was that gnarly b!t$h”. That was Tough Julie, and it was a salty description she embraced as a badge of character.

Julie had a green thumb for nurturing plants, enjoyed a variety of handcrafts, collected frog and toad figurines, and loved Sandhill cranes, Husker sports, and most of all, Pepsi Cola.

Julie was preceded in death by her parents and brother Gregg Mitchell Todd. She is survived by siblings Rick (Victoria) Todd of Amarillo, Texas, Joni (Gonzalo) Gallegos of Arlington, Virginia, Jeff Todd of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and Florence Todd of North Platte; nieces Gaylene Latham, Ruthanna Todd Autry (Barron), Isabella Gallegos, Liliana Gallegos, Lydia (Elizabeth) Wilkinson Gonzales, Samantha Rabinowitz, and Lilly Rabinowitz; nephews Nathan Todd, Paul Todd, Samuel Todd, and Joe Rabinowitz; grand niece Esme Flora Gonzales and grand nephews Adam Latham, Austen Latham, and Sonny Finn Pruess; many beloved cousins; life long friend Scott Gilster; and Ivan Sandberg.

 </figure>Julie Leigh Todd, 67, of North Platte, Nebraska passed away March 15, 2024 at Great Plains Health in North Platte in the loving presence of family. She was born November 18, 1956, North Platte, Nebraska to Ima Joyce Ferguson and Richard Riggs Todd.Julie grew up in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School with the class of 1975. After attending Kearney State College, Julie began a lifelong career as a caregiver. She cared for special needs children and adults at Bethphage in Axtell, Nebraska, Margaret Walters School in Arvada, Colorado, and with ENCOR, now known as Duet, in Omaha, Nebraska. &nbsp;A serious illness in 1996 interrupted her working life for many years as she fought to recover her health. Stubbornly determined, Julie returned to work at the North Platte Telegraph where she was voted Readers’ Choice #1 Newspaper Carrier. Julie turned once again to caregiving in the latter years of her life, providing loving, compassionate home care to an Alzheimer’s patient.Julie was known by her family and many friends as sweet, loving, and considerate. She was tender and compassionate with the many people she cared for. Julie never missed a niece or nephew’s birthday, often sending a hand-made gift. She was loyal to her mother, and was a source of joy, smiles and wonderment to her siblings. She endured loving teasing, and knew how to dish it out, too. Julie often took better care of others than she did herself, reflecting her unselfish approach to those she cared for or loved.Julie was also known for her toughness and resilience. Illnesses often tried to slow her down, but her stubborn spirit fought back and kept her going. Once, when she was assaulted, Julie responded with kicking, clawing and screaming and fought off her attacker, who fled. Questioned by police, her assailant asked “Who was that gnarly b!t$h”. That was Tough Julie, and it was a salty description she embraced as a badge of character.Julie had a green thumb for nurturing plants, enjoyed a variety of handcrafts, collected frog and toad figurines, and loved Sandhill cranes, Husker sports, and most of all, Pepsi Cola.Julie was preceded in death by her parents and brother Gregg Mitchell Todd. She is survived by siblings Rick (Victoria) Todd of Amarillo, Texas, Joni (Gonzalo) Gallegos of Arlington, Virginia, Jeff Todd of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and Florence Todd of North Platte; nieces Gaylene Latham, Ruthanna Todd Autry (Barron), Isabella Gallegos, Liliana Gallegos, Lydia (Elizabeth) Wilkinson Gonzales, Samantha Rabinowitz, and Lilly Rabinowitz; nephews Nathan Todd, Paul Todd, Samuel Todd, and Joe Rabinowitz; grand niece Esme Flora Gonzales and grand nephews Adam Latham, Austen Latham, and Sonny Finn Pruess; many beloved cousins; life long friend Scott Gilster; and Ivan Sandberg.Memorials are suggested to the family. &nbsp;Online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com.Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Adams &amp; Swanson Funeral Home with Revered Mike Evans officiating. &nbsp; Jack L. Soller, 94, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died March 16, 2024 in Gothenburg, NE. &nbsp;

Jack was born June 11, 1929 in Kearney, NE, son of Elmer Guy and Doris (Hecox) Soller.

Jack was a member of VFW, American Legion and Cozad Elks Club, and the Gothenburg Honor Guard since 1955. &nbsp;He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gothenburg, served as trustee and member of the session. Jack served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955 as a Sergeant and Military Policeman serving in Morocco, North Africa, Salina, KS and Albuquerque, NM. He enjoyed the dance club, flying club, hunting and blue rock shooting. Jack married Donna Jean Townsend on July 1, 1960 in Gothenburg, NE, and to this union one daughter was born.&nbsp;

Survivors include daughter, Alexis (Kirk) McNeal of Kearney, NE; granddaughter, Lauren Soller McNeal; and Jane Herndon (partner).

Jack was preceded in death by wife, Donna Jean Soller, sister, Joan Beck, parents Elmer Guy and Doris Soller.

Services will be held 10:30 am, Friday, April 5, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1020 Lake Ave, Gothenburg, NE, with Rev. David Boyd officiating. &nbsp;Interment will follow in the Gothenburg Cemetery and Fort McPherson National Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Gothenburg Honor Guard, or the First Presbyterian Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gary Lee Morrow, a dedicated educator and esteemed member of the community, passed away on March 19, 2024, at Meadowlark Pointe Assisted Living. He was born on January 24, 1938, in Central City, Nebraska to Floyd A. and Marjorie E. Morrow. He married Carol Ann Wilcox at their home in Minden, Nebraska on May 10, 1958. Their union was blessed with four children. They were happily married for 65 years.&nbsp;

 </figure>Gary Lee Morrow, a dedicated educator and esteemed member of the community, passed away on March 19, 2024, at Meadowlark Pointe Assisted Living. Their union was blessed with four children. They were happily married for 65 years.&nbsp;Gary's passion for education led him to embark on a fulfilling career that spanned several decades. He began his journey in 1963 with his first teaching job in Grant, Nebraska, where he taught high school math, followed by Hebron and then Cozad, where he spent the rest of his teaching career. Throughout the years, Gary's commitment to shaping young minds shone through as he fully retired in 2007. Even after retirement, he continued to share his knowledge and love for teaching as a substitute teacher for a few more years. Apart from his work in education, Gary dedicated his summers to teaching ASCS and held various roles at Simplot and Nebraska Plastics. He also served as the summer recreation program director for kids' T-ball, baseball, and softball.&nbsp;He embraced athleticism from a young age and excelled as a great athlete throughout his life. Gary's love for sports extended beyond his personal accomplishments as he took immense joy in watching his children take on coaching roles, instilling in them the same values of dedication and teamwork that he held dear.&nbsp;One of Gary's greatest pleasures was traveling far and wide to support and cheer on his grandchildren during their own sporting events. His unwavering presence on the sidelines or in the stands served as a source of inspiration and encouragement for the younger generations, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.&nbsp;Gary's academic pursuits were equally commendable. He graduated from Minden High School with the class of 1957 and went on to graduate from Kearney State Teachers College. His thirst for knowledge led him to further his studies at LSU from 1965 to 1968 to obtain his master's degree.&nbsp;In addition to his professional accomplishments, Gary found joy in various hobbies and interests such as hunting, fishing, bowling, camping, and decorating cakes. He was also a loyal supporter of all Cozad sporting events.&nbsp;Gary was also&nbsp;known for his exquisite woodworking skills which was evident in the intricate details of the nativity sets, chess pieces, fish figurines, and skiers he meticulously brought to life. His talent not only showcased his creativity but also his dedication to perfection in every piece he crafted.&nbsp;Throughout his life, Gary was an active member of the Cozad Elks Lodge #2250 and the Cozad United Methodist Church. His involvement in these organizations reflected his deep-rooted sense of community and altruism.&nbsp;Gary is survived by his loving wife Carol and beloved dog, Tysen; children: Deborah Joan (Scott) Miller of Aurora; Michael Lee (Shelly) Morrow of Phoenix, AZ; Bradley Dee (Terri) Morrow of Omaha; Anngela Kaye (Rick) Love of Cozad; grandchildren: Keri (Seth), Kurt (Elizabeth), Ryan, Cody, Taylor, Paul, Sydney (Tre), Erin (Zach), Eric (Gretchen); great-grandchildren: Jackson, Schylar, Riley, Renleigh ,Liam ,Reid ,Coye ,Adley ,Evan; as well as many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Carolyn and brother-in-law Gene Thompson; and grandson Justin Morrow.&nbsp;Gary’s legacy as an educator and community member will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who helped lovingly care for Gary over the years.&nbsp;Memorials are suggested to Central Plains Hospice, Cozad United Methodist Church or an educational scholarship at Cozad High School. Cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service will be held Monday, March 25, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cozad United Methodist Church with Pastor Bellarmee Milosi officiating. A memorial book signing with family present will be Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Berryman Funeral Home.
