Bernadine “Dee” Marie Meyer, age 90, of North Platte, died September 9, 2023 at Stone Hearth in Gothenburg. &nbsp;Dee was born on July 7, 1933 in Stockville, NE to Cletus and Nellie (Malloy) Arent.&nbsp;

Dee was raised in the Stockville area and graduated from Stockville High School in 1951. &nbsp;In 1954, she married Bob Pinkerton. &nbsp;Bob preceded her in death after a battle with cancer in 1969. &nbsp;On February 11, 1971, Dee married Larry Meyer. &nbsp;The couple lived in North Platte where Dee was employed at the Assessor’s office. &nbsp;Dee worked there for over 40 years, serving as the county assessor from 1971 until 1999. &nbsp; Larry preceded her in 2011 after a four-year battle with cancer.

Dee was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was very family oriented. &nbsp;She loved the kids, babies, blue heelers and her Belgian horses. &nbsp; She was a very clean person, exercising her spring cleaning every Saturday. &nbsp;Dee will be remembered for her big family dinners, especially Christmas Eve, and her excellent cooking skills. &nbsp;She loved politics and watched Fox news and old westerns. &nbsp;Her last words to her family were “Vote Trump”.

Dee Marie Meyer (1933-2023)

&nbsp;Becky Sue (Newman) Smith was born June 8, 1958, in McCook, NE to James Alvin and Karen Ray (Holcomb) Newman. Becky died September 5, 2023, at Hospice House in Omaha.

Becky graduated high school in 1976 in Stamford. She worked at BD in Holdrege for seven years until she met her husband, Kendell Weye Smith. They married on August 26, 1983.

Two sons were born to this union: Shay Weye Smith and Tucker Eli Smith.

Becky worked as a CNA in different nursing homes until moving to Broken Bow in 1996. She then went to work for BD in Broken Bow. She worked there for 24 years until she become ill with small cell lung cancer in 2022.

She received cancer treatments at the Buffet Cancer Center in Omaha.

Becky is survived by her loving husband Kendell Smith, sons Shay Smith and Tucker Smith, brothers Samuel Claude (Kelly Ann Merksick) Newman of Council Bluffs, IA and James Alvin Newman, Jr. of Stanton.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents James Alvin Newman and Karen Ray (Holcomb) Newman, aunts, uncles, and cousins.&nbsp;&nbsp; Memorial Services will be Friday, September 15, 2023, at 3:00 pm at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Becky Smith (1958-2023)

Jobeth Irene Troxel, 34, a beloved member of the community of Callaway, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the Callaway District Hospital in Callaway.

She was born on April 26, 1989, in Aurora, Nebraska to Sidney and Jennifer (Zwiener) Troxel. She graduated from Callaway High School with the class of 2007. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in science at the National American University in Rapid City. During her time there, she worked for a wild horse sanctuary near Hot Springs for a few years before moving on to work at a ranch near Taylor. She couldn't stay away from her roots for long, so she moved back to Callaway, shortly after.

Jobeth had a great love for the outdoors. She loved tending to animals, especially horses, and working outside in her gardens, tending to her chocolate cherry tomatoes to have as a special treat later. She especially loved taking care of her beloved cat, Shay. Jobeth always went above and beyond to help her neighbors. Whether it was mowing lawns, cleaning, or tackling those stubborn weeds, she never hesitated to lend a helping hand. Her selflessness knew no bounds, and her acts of kindness left a mark on those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with her. Those who knew Jobeth knew that Halloween was a big deal. She always made sure to adorn her home with the best Halloween decorations for the whole town to see.&nbsp;Jobeth’s vivacious spirit emanated from her very being. Her warmth and genuine love for others endeared her to everyone she encountered. She possessed a kind and gentle nature that made people feel valued and heard, creating lasting friendships wherever she went.&nbsp;Those left to honor her memory are her mother, Jennifer Troxel of Callaway; grandmother, Mary Zwiener, half-brother, Jason Troxel of Texas; uncles, Dan (Joyce) Zwiener of Norfolk, Scott (Kim) Zwiener of Valparaiso, Nebraska, great-aunts, Grace Schimintz, and Janet Zwiener, and special friend Jeremy Horton of Edgemont South Dakota, as well as numerous extended family and friends.

Valerie D. Romero-Howell, passed away on September 10, 2023, at the age of 53, at Great Plains Health. &nbsp;On March 29, 1970, she was welcomed into the world by parents, Rudolph E. and Irene A. (Lujan) Romero, in Denver, Colorado.

In 1987, after attending high school in North Denver until the age of 16, Valerie moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and immediately began working. &nbsp;She was working in the candy shop of the Circus Circus Hotel when she met James Howell, on April 1, 1988, just three days after her eighteenth birthday. &nbsp;The couple dated for seven years before being wed on April 30, 1996, at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas. &nbsp;Had the minister been an Elvis Presley look alike, it would have been a classic Vegas wedding. Valerie and James had two boys, James Brandon and Joshua Bradley, to witness their marriage and a third son, Jeffery Blake, came just two months after the wedding. &nbsp;The young family moved to North Platte in October of 2000. &nbsp;Valerie was a stay-at-home mom, doing everything and anything to make sure her boys were always taken care of. &nbsp;Scare tactics may have been used to instill morals and respect into her children.&nbsp;

Valerie was an animal lover; from snakes and ducks to cats and mice; she loved all living creatures. &nbsp;This could also be said about the many children she took in throughout her life, to keep them safe and make sure they had a full belly. &nbsp;Her boys’ friends often called Valerie their mom as well. &nbsp;She was feisty but soft hearted, being one of the most open minded and least judgmental women many people knew. &nbsp;Valerie always claimed to dislike socializing but there was never a shopping trip to Walmart where she wasn’t caught talking to several people throughout the store. &nbsp;Valerie always had her hair done BIG, her make up on point, and her nails manicured beautifully. &nbsp;

Those that remain to carry on Valerie’s spirit are her husband, James Howell of North Platte; sons, James (Kristi) Howell of North Platte, Joshua (Alicia) Howell of North Platte; granddaughters, Alison Howell and Nora Howell; sisters, Renea (Jose) Gutierrez of Las Vegas, Desiree (Cesar) Torres of North Platte; aunt, Linda Romero of Colorado Springs; nieces, Vanessa Governor of Las Vegas, Alex (Patrick) Gruttadauria of Las Vegas, Nicole Torres of North Platte; nephews, Juanito Carrillo of Denver, Cesar (fiancé, Hope Duran) Torres Jr. of North Platte; great niece, Ava Carrillo; great nephews, Karter Governor and Oakley Miller; several cousins and friends. &nbsp;

Valerie D. Romero-Howell (1970-2023)

Sherman Daniel Miller was welcomed home on September 08, 2023, at the age of 75 in North Platte, Nebraska. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and lasting memories that will forever be cherished by those whose lives he blessed.

Born on February 12, 1948, in Gentry County, Missouri, Sherman was the son of Sherman John and Della Marie (David) Miller and spent his formative years in Missouri Valley, Iowa, where he would go on to graduate from Missouri Valley High School in 1967.

Sherman was hired on with Chicago and North Western Transportation Company in 1974. Then in 1995, he was transferred to the Union Pacific Railroad in North Platte, Nebraska, where he retired in 2008 after 34 years.

He shared over 40 years of happiness with his cherished wife, Terri (Hulsebus) Miller, coming together as one on August 20, 1983. Together, they raised two children: Daniel and Kristin.

Sherman found joy in volunteering with the American Red Cross and later with the Salvation Army Food Pantry. He was an active member within the North Platte Berean Church. He enjoyed camping with his wife Terri, fishing, and spending time playing horseshoes with friends.

Sherman is preceded in death by his parents, Sherman John Miller and Della (David) Miller; His sisters, Betty Joann (Robert) Jenson; Claudean (Harold) Jenson; Mary Ann (Jay) Brown; Helen Blunt. His father-in-law Forrest Hulsebus and his mother-in-law Donna (Rodasky) Hulsebus.

He is survived by his wife, Terri Miller; his son Daniel Miller, daughter-in-law (Brittany) and three grandchildren (Bentley, Della, and Hudson) of Gulf Breeze, Florida; his daughter Kristin Eschen, son-in-law (Larry) and three grandsons (Curtis, Cole, and Corbyn) of Holdrege, Nebraska and mother-in-law, Arlene Hulsebus, of Mondamin, Iowa. Along with other family and friends.

Sherman will be remembered for his kind heart, generosity, and selflessness. He was a pillar of strength for his friends and family. He had a heart that knew no bounds and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on September 13th at 9:00am-6:00pm with family present from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Adams &amp; Swanson Funeral Home. Additionally, a celebration

of life to honor Sherman will be held on September 14 th at 10:00am at the North Platte Berean Church with a luncheon to follow thereafter.

As we bid farewell to our beloved Sherman, we take solace in knowing that he has found eternal peace and happiness in the loving arms of the Heavenly Father. We will remember him not with tears of sorrow, but with smiles of gratitude for the blessings he brought into our lives.

Detta Safranek (1929-2023)

Carol Ann Brown, 62, of Grant, Nebraska, passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023, at her home in Grant, surrounded by her loving family.

Carol was born on April 7, 1961, in Sutherland, Nebraska, to the late Cleith and Evelyn (Swanson) Sines. She graduated from Imperial High School with the Class of 1979.

Shortly after high school, she married her first husband, Terry Wagner, with whom she had three children: Crystal, Alan, and Teresa. The family initially resided in Imperial.

After the conclusion of her first marriage, Carol married Andrew "Andy" Brown on September 11, 1994, in Imperial. Carol and Andy welcomed three children: Heath, Sheena, and Kayla. The family lived in Imperial for several years before ultimately moving to Grant.

For more than three decades, Carol worked in nursing care, beginning her career as a nurse aide at Imperial Manor Nursing Home. She later transitioned to Golden Ours Convalescent Home, where she dedicated 22 years of service. Carol took great joy in crocheting, gardening, and, most importantly, spending quality time with her grandchildren. Her interests also included a unique collection of Holstein cows, a passion for professional wrestling, and a deep love for her cherished puppies.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Brown, in 2022; her son, Alan Wagner; her parents, Cleith and Evelyn Sines; brother, Larry Sines; two nephews; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Survivors include her children, Heath (Renee) Brown of McCook, Teresa (Tim) Ledford of Grant, Sheena (Daniel) Smith of Grant, Crystal Wagner of Imperial, and Kayla (Tom) Prosser of Grant; 16 grandchildren; her siblings, Gary Sines of Arizona, Jack Sines of Imperial, and John (Annette) Sines of North Platte; as well as her sister-in-law, Rose Sines of McCook.

&nbsp; J. Blaine Runner peacefully passed away at his home in Sutherland on September 9, 2023, at age 94.&nbsp; Blaine, the son of Clarence and Ida (Johnson) Runner, was born October 17, 1928, in Hershey, where he was raised.&nbsp; He participated in 4-H then after graduating from Hershey High School in 1946, he attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.&nbsp; After his schooling, Blaine entered the U.S. Army in 1952.

Following his honorable discharge, Blaine returned home to the family farm and ranch.&nbsp; On June 12, 1955, he was united in marriage to Betty June McConnell at the Maria Lutheran Church in Hershey.

Blaine was a life long rancher who raised black angus cattle for 70 years.&nbsp; He and Betty lived north of Hershey, until 1962 when they moved to Mullen.&nbsp; They moved again in '71, this time to a ranch 30 miles north of Ashby in Cherry County.&nbsp; After retiring they settled in Sutherland where they attended the United Methodist Church.

Blaine was a conscientious steward of the land.&nbsp; He was a board member of the NRD and helped several young families with the opportunity to get started in ranching.&nbsp; He loved to learn, especially about science, and learned to fly in 1945; airplanes were a lifelong passion.&nbsp; Blaine was also active in his community; he was president of a rural Cherry County School Board and taught Sunday School.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jim Runner; parents, Clarence and Ida; sisters, Mary Binger (George) and Lorene Huebner (Lloyd "Slick"); sisters-in-law, Patricia Jones and Kay McConnell; nephew, Clark McConnell; and grandson, Andrei Quick.

Blaine is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty; daughters, Bonnie Quick (Clifford) of Callaway and Ruth Fleecs (Pat) of Sutherland; grandchildren, Caleb Quick (Cynthia), Jake Fleecs (Katie) and Collin Fleecs (Breann Paul); great-grandchildren, Esther, Cora and Abigail Quick, Liam Paul-Fleecs, and baby boy Fleecs due in November; his brother, Robert Runner (Jane) of Ashby; brothers-in-law, Jim Jones of Eddyville and Bruce McConnell of Arnold; as well as many nieces and nephews, including Doug Runner and Jennifer Hayes, and other family.

 Services will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland with Pastor Mark Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in O'Fallon's Riverside Cemetery.

J. Blaine Runner (1928-2023)

Joe Edward Grantzinger was born to Floyd and Selma (Ridenour) Grantzinger on September 14, 1947, in Anselmo, NE. He passed away on September 7, 2023, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Joe attended Dale School through eighth grade, making several life-long friends during those years. He went to high school at Anselmo-Merna High School, graduating in 1965. That fall he began studying Ag Econ at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The following year he pledged Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. &nbsp;He enjoyed fraternity life and all the social opportunities it offered. His many friendships remain some of his best memories.

When on December 1, 1969, the Selective Service System conducted a lottery to determine the order of the call to service in the Vietnam War in 1970, Joe’s birthdate of September 14th was the first number called. He saw the writing on the wall and enlisted in the army. After basic training Joe was lucky to be sent to Germany. While there, he traveled with friends to Italy, France, and Switzerland. His favorite memory of the time, though, has always been of their trip to Oktoberfest in Munich. He always liked telling stories about the masses of people, the seemingly endless tents, the giant racks of roasting chickens and the beer maids dressed in costumes who would carry eight large beer steins at a time. &nbsp;

After his service Joe returned home in 1971 to help with the spring planting. On August 21, 1971, he married Debra Wright of Broken Bow, NE at the First Christian Church in Broken Bow. Many people remember it as being suffocatingly hot that day. It is also remembered as a busy time for weddings for Merna residents as 5 young couples with Merna ties got married in August of 1971. Joe and Deb returned to Lincoln to finish their final year of study before graduating from the University of Nebraska. In 1972 they moved to Merna, and Joe joined his dad and eventually took over the family farm and Pioneer Seed sales operation.

Joe dedicated his life to farming and to his “side job” as a salesman for Pioneer Seed Corn for 47 years before retiring after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. He and Deb were blessed with daughter Amy and son Ryan and 7 grandchildren.

Joe and Deb had the opportunity to travel during their 52 years together. Their adventures took them to numerous places including Italy, Portugal, Alaska, Central America, South America and through the Panama Canal. Favorite memories stand out from their trips to one of their favorite spots, Key West, FL, and from their “dream come true” trip to Cuba. At the top of the list is Disney World, to which Joe and Deb traveled a time or two. &nbsp;Joe always told Deb, “You just pick where you want to go and plan it. &nbsp;Let me know when we’re leaving.” &nbsp;&nbsp;

Joe believed deeply in community service and rural economic development. Over the years he served on various local and county boards. He was a founding member of the Merna Area Promoters and was on the board during the process of planning and raising funds for the Merna Area Community Center. For many years he was on the Merna Rural Fire Board and the local Farmers’ Co-op Board of Directors. He served on the boards of Nest builders, Custer County Economic Development and the Custer County Foundation. Joe also gave his time to a Pioneer based initiative called Search For Solutions, a program developed to involve local business owners and rural leaders in finding solutions to keep our rural areas active and growing.&nbsp;

If you were ever looking for Joe during his retirement years, there is a good chance you would find him at Trotters enjoying a coffee and conversation about the weather, how much rain we got (or needed to get) and farming. He was a fixture there for the 9:00 group. Karen and her crew looked after him as if he were family.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Selma Grantzinger, twin brother Donald, brother-in-law Keith Leibhart, parents-in-law Garnet and Maxine Wright and nephew-in-law Mark Wells.

Joe is survived by Deb, his wife of 52 years, daughter Amy (Nate) Filipi and granddaughters, Reese and Palmer of Lincoln, NE, and by his son Ryan (Chelsa) Grantzinger and grandsons, Conner, Gavin, Reed, Garrett and Carson of Ravenna, NE. He is survived by two sisters, Jeanne Leibhart of Broken Bow, NE (formerly Merna) and Elaine (Don) Stevens of Mountain Home, ID. Joe also is survived by brothers-in-law Steve (Eugenia) Wright, Lincoln NE, and Randy (Kim) Wright, Lincoln, NE and sister-in-law Laurel (Kris) Fitzgerald of Dallas, TX. There are numerous nieces and nephews left to remember their Uncle Joe, including Larry (Cat) Leibhart, Kathy (Jim) Eberle, Randy (Kim) Leibhart, Kristy Wells, Tina (Chris) Hutton, Donna (Mike) Schramm, Amanda (Adam) White, Jeremy (Tara) Wright, Andy (Mindy) Wright, Kelly (Wade) Marsh, John (Carol) Wright, Doug (Lauren) Wright and Patrick (Lauren) Fitzgerald.

After the burial an Oktoberfest Celebration of Life will take place at Kinkaider Brewery in Broken Bow, one of Joe’s favorite places to sit on the patio, talk with friends (and strangers) and enjoy great food and a couple beers. Eldon was born on December 26, 1926, in Northeast Custer County to Joseph and Carolina (Kriz) Trojan. Eldon attended school at Shady Hollow Dist. #154 in Northeast Custer County. Eldon farmed and ranched Northeast of Comstock since the early 1940’s, he is well known for his Button Key accordion, which he started playing at the age of 5 years old. Eldon along with brothers Frank and Leonard started the Trojan Brothers Band and played for many weddings and occasions during the 1950’s and 60’s especially at National Hall and Jugman Hall.

Eldon married Marion Tvrdik on September 18, 1971. Marion passed away on January 25, 1998.

Eldon was always there with a helping hand whether it be a ride to the doctor or the grocery store, or if you needed your vehicle towed back to town. Each year he was there for the community clean-up day at the Centennial Garden.

Eldon was preceded in death by his wife Marion, parents Joseph and Carolina, step daughter-in-law Kathy Tvrdik, seven brothers Otto, Joseph, Jr., Emil, Edward, Frank, Charles, and Leonard, three sisters Camilla Pavel, Minnie Krul, and one at infancy.

Eldon is survived by two stepsons Don Tvrdik of Kansas and Lonnie (Mitzi) Tvrdik of Loup City, grandchildren Chris (Barb) Tvrdik, Angela (Michael) Cantrell, Allison (Seth) Regan, Randy Tvrdik, seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, two nephews Gary and Richard, and four nieces Glynette, Betty, Darlene, and Connie.

Eldon Trojan (1926-2023)

&nbsp; Patricia A. Thompson of Imperial, NE passed away on Tuesday September 6, 2023 at the Imperial Manor at the age of 88 surrounded by family.&nbsp; Pat, as she was known, was born on July 19, 1935 in Imperial to Delma Leota (Brown) and Raymond Adam Jaeger. She attended Imperial Public Schools from elementary through 12th grade. After graduation, she married Jack Knotwell on her 18th birthday and moved to McCook, NE. To this union were born 2 girls: Gayla Kay and Cindy Rae. After a divorce in 1959, Pat and the 2 girls moved back to Imperial where she worked as a waitress at Babb’s café.

Pat married Jim Thompson on April 2, 1961 at the Methodist Church in Imperial. The following year they had a daughter, Linda Faye. The couple lived in the lone star community before purchasing the farm in the Blanche community.

Pat enjoyed sewing , knitting, gardening, crafts, extension club and card club. She drove the “bus” for country school children which so happened to be her big green impala. After Jim’s death in 1993, Pat purchased the John Splitt home in Imperial in 1995 where she has resided until present. She loved to go camping and gambling with her special friend, Fuzz Harris.

Pat is survived by her daughters, Gayla Mayden, Cindy Hudson &amp; Linda Kearns; Sisters, Delores Befort, Joyce Roesener, Marla (Darty) Schilke; sister-in-laws, Janette (Richard) Carmich, Jan Jaeger, Katie Thompson &amp; Bonnie Thompson; Grandsons, Schad (Jami) Mayden, Cody (Sara) Hudson, Dusty (Jennifer) Hudson and Jessie Demicell; granddaughters, Misty (Deni) Flesch, Chelsa Hudson and Kassy Herbert; Great grandchildren, Taylor (Cheyenne) Mayden, Brendan Mayden, Caysie and Saige Hudson, Lillian Brynn and Dane Hudson and Tristian Herbert; great-great grandson, Jaxon Harvey; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Patricia Annette Thompson (1935-2023)

Sandy Jensen, 71, of Lexington, Nebraska, peacefully passed away on Sunday September 3, 2023 in Omaha at CHI Bergan Mercy.

Sandra Jean (Larson) Jensen was born November 10, 1951 in Gregory, South Dakota to Donald E. Larson and L.Joyce (Larsh) Larson. She grew up on the family farm south of Dallas, South Dakota.&nbsp; She attended country school at the Melrose school from first grade until third grade.

In February of 1961 the family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota.

Sandy attended Wilson Elementary School until the family moved to the west side of town in July of 1962.&nbsp; She finished her elementary education at South Canyon Elementary School. Sandy completed her middle school education at West Junior High School.

Sandy began her high school education attending her Sophomore, Junior, and the first term of her Senior year at Rapid City Central High School. The new Stevens High School was completed mid-term, and she finished her senior year at Stevens, graduating magna cum laude in May of 1970.

Sandy loved music and had a beautiful voice, and also played guitar. Her favorite singing moment came when she performed a solo of Ave Maria at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado.&nbsp; She was also part of the cast at the Melodrama music show in Rockerville, South Dakota.

Sandy had a big heart and loved helping others, so she decided to attend nursing school at the University of South Dakota School of Nursing in Rapid City, South Dakota, receiving her RN degree and Cap in the Spring of 1975.

After nursing school, she moved to Lexington, Nebraska, where she met Roger Jensen, the love of her life. They were married April 15th, 1978, and made their home in Lexington, Nebraska, where they raised their two children, Amy (Corey) Anderson and Ryan (LaTisha) Jensen, and grandchildren, Brissa and Soren Jensen. Sandy was very proud of her family.

Nursing was her passion, and she loved her employment at Lexington Regional Health Center and Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE.

Sandy had an infectious laugh that would light up the room. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.

Sandy is survived by her husband, Roger of Lexington; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Corey Anderson of Omaha; son and daughter-in-law, Ryan and LaTisha Jensen of Omaha; grandchildren, Brissa and Soren Jensen of Omaha; sisters, Carol (Keith) Umenthum of Spearfish, South Dakota, and Pamela (Dave) Kunzweiler of Rapid City, South Dakota; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and in-laws.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Joyce Larson; her brother, Bradley J. Larson; her grandparents, May (Jernberg) and Perry Larson and Nellie (Ross) Larsh and John Franklin Larsh Sr.

A Celebration Of Life Service will be on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington with Pastor Rob Kuefner, officiating.

Sandy Jensen (1951-2023)

Carol Carpenter, age 84, of Broken Bow, NE passed away September 4, 2023, at the CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney, NE.

Carol Lorraine Carpenter was born November 4, 1938, in Ansley, NE to Lemuel and Alma (Landes) Parker.

Carol worked as a waitress before going to work at Becton Dickinson for 40 years.

Carol married Carl Speer, Jr and the couple had five children. After her divorce she raised all five children on her own. Later in life she married Cleon “Carp” Carpenter, the love of her life, until his death in 2003.

Carol was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses for 40 years. She enjoyed going to Assemblies with friends from church and their bible studies together.

Carol was an avid reader. She always had a book or her bible with her. She loved going for long rides with her husband Carp and stopping to try new restaurants. She liked going fishing with Carp or her grandson Andrew, where they fished, and she sat and read a book. Carol loved to take the kids camping in Colorado.

Carol was a very giving person; if you visited her, she always offered to fix you something to eat. If she had a dollar and you needed it, she gave it. She never spoke ill of anyone. The worse thing anyone ever heard her say was, “I don’t like them much, but I can get along with them.”

Carol was preceded in death by her husband Cleon “Carp”, mother Alma (Landes) Pettis, father Lemuel Parker, three sisters Ruby Reno, Wanda Schmidt, and Bonnie Jean Parker, and three grandsons Zack Speer, Jessie Speer, and Markus Hohenreiter.

Carol is survived by her children Carl Keith (Sherry) Speer of Gibbon, Deborah (Mike) Dodge of North Dakota, Daniel (Jennifer) Speer of Broken Bow, Angie Martinez of Colorado, and William Speer of Broken Bow, 25 grandkids, 38 great grandkids, siblings David Parker, Doris Jones, and Leland “Corky” Parker.

Carol Carpenter (1938-2023)

Lee Owen Harris, former Cozad resident, passed away August 29, 2023 at The Willows at Gretna, NE at the age of 82. He was born in Cozad to Bill and Loretta (Bybee), the second of six children, on May 20, 1941.

The Harris family attended the Primitive Baptist Church and moved to a small farm near Darr where Lee attended District #19 rural school. &nbsp;He earned several math and science academic awards. Lee was an outstanding athlete in multiple sports and a proud member of the 1958 Class B State Championship Track Team. He graduated from Cozad High School in 1959. &nbsp;Three months later on August 22, he married his high school sweetheart, Lavonne Grabenstein. &nbsp;To this union they were blessed with two children: Brian and Vicki.

The couple lived in Denver for a short time before returning to Cozad to begin a farm/ranch business of 25 years. &nbsp;Lee was recognized as the Outstanding Young Farmer of Nebraska in 1966. &nbsp;He was active in the American Lutheran Church, serving as head usher and a member of the church council. &nbsp;He was involved with the Dawson County Cattlemen, Nebraska Cattlemen, Dawson County Extension Board, and the 100th Meridian Livestock 4-H Club. He served as the president of the T-Bone Club and secretary for the District #29 council. &nbsp;He was a charter member of the Cozad Elks Lodge. &nbsp;Also, Lee was an avid tennis player in both singles and doubles competition.

With a move to Lincoln in 1990, Lee and Lavonne embarked on their truck driving career. &nbsp;For nearly 14 years, they travelled cross-country as a team for over a million miles. &nbsp;After Lavonne's untimely death in 2005, Lee stayed busy with travelling, part-time work at Walmart, and attending his grandchildren's school events and family gatherings.

Lee was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Lavonne; parents; in-laws Walter and Della June Grabenstein; brothers Charles and Dee; brothers-in-law Gary Grabenstein and Rod Light. &nbsp; Survivors are son Brian (Lynn) Harris of Bushnell, FL; daughter Vicki (Derrin) Hansen of Gretna; granddaughter Danica (Jackson) Wilson of Madison, AL; grandson Derek (Mikayla) Harris of Omaha; granddaughter Abby Hansen of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter Erica Hansen of Omaha; four great-grandchildren Callen, Cora, and Cienna Wilson, and Jaxdon Harris. Lee's siblings include Orpha (Ron) McVicker of Denver, CO; Jon (Kerri) Harris of Davenport, FL; Rita Light of Bennet. &nbsp;Many nieces, nephews, and cousins, along with other dear friends, are left to cherish his memory.

He graduated from Cozad High School in 1959. &nbsp;Three months later on August 22, he married his high school sweetheart, Lavonne Grabenstein. &nbsp;To this union they were blessed with two children: Brian and Vicki.The couple lived in Denver for a short time before returning to Cozad to begin a farm/ranch business of 25 years. &nbsp;Lee was recognized as the Outstanding Young Farmer of Nebraska in 1966. &nbsp;He was active in the American Lutheran Church, serving as head usher and a member of the church council. &nbsp;He was involved with the Dawson County Cattlemen, Nebraska Cattlemen, Dawson County Extension Board, and the 100th Meridian Livestock 4-H Club. He served as the president of the T-Bone Club and secretary for the District #29 council. &nbsp;He was a charter member of the Cozad Elks Lodge. &nbsp;Also, Lee was an avid tennis player in both singles and doubles competition.With a move to Lincoln in 1990, Lee and Lavonne embarked on their truck driving career. &nbsp;For nearly 14 years, they travelled cross-country as a team for over a million miles. &nbsp;After Lavonne's untimely death in 2005, Lee stayed busy with travelling, part-time work at Walmart, and attending his grandchildren's school events and family gatherings.Lee was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Lavonne; parents; in-laws Walter and Della June Grabenstein; brothers Charles and Dee; brothers-in-law Gary Grabenstein and Rod Light. &nbsp; Survivors are son Brian (Lynn) Harris of Bushnell, FL; daughter Vicki (Derrin) Hansen of Gretna; granddaughter Danica (Jackson) Wilson of Madison, AL; grandson Derek (Mikayla) Harris of Omaha; granddaughter Abby Hansen of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter Erica Hansen of Omaha; four great-grandchildren Callen, Cora, and Cienna Wilson, and Jaxdon Harris. Lee's siblings include Orpha (Ron) McVicker of Denver, CO; Jon (Kerri) Harris of Davenport, FL; Rita Light of Bennet. &nbsp;Many nieces, nephews, and cousins, along with other dear friends, are left to cherish his memory.Memorials will be directed by the family. Lee Owen Harris (1941-2023)

Sillas James “Jim” Sillasen, age 93, of Ogallala, NE. formerly of Keystone; died Wednesday, September 6th, 2023 at Wel-life Health Care in Ogallala, NE.

Jim was born on July 15, 1930, to Andrew and Mabel (Krab) Sillasen in Sutherland, NE.&nbsp; He was raised on the family ranch east of Keystone, where he continued to live throughout his life.&nbsp; Jim recalled that as a young child, his first job was to feed the cats and the chickens and bring in wood for the cook stove.&nbsp; He was the third generation of the family to manage the ranch and all the employees who were hired to feed cattle and put-up hay.

He met his future wife, Verna McGreer, at a dance in Paxton.&nbsp; They married in Big Springs, NE on June 10, 1951.&nbsp; Jim and Verna had three children: Kathleen (Creighton) Miller, Joanell (Ron) Klug, and Lee (Brenda) Sillasen.&nbsp; They raised their family on the ranch and took in more than one youth who needed a home. Jerry Craghead and Cal Peters were two such young men, who initially came to work on the ranch and then became part of the family.&nbsp;

Jim was always busy on the ranch, from checking the cows in the hills to supervising the work in the hayfield.&nbsp; If one of the kids had too much fun on Friday night, he was sure to have a good job waiting for them on Saturday morning.&nbsp; The kids laughingly recall having to move cattle or clean out a tank, among other things, on many a Saturday morning.&nbsp; Jim was always able to find one of the grandkids a job to help them, as he said, build character.&nbsp; He never knew a stranger and was often found visiting with a friend he had just met.&nbsp; Jim could always be counted on to be at the sale barn in Ogallala.&nbsp; He was there every week to catch up on the latest news at the round table.&nbsp;

In his later years, Jim could often be found on the golf course, playing with his buddy, Cal, and his son-in-law, Creighton.&nbsp; He was well known to be the only golfer with golf spikes on his cowboy boots.&nbsp; He loved horses and rode his whole life until he switched to his trusty Honda Rancher. As a child, he rode his horse four miles, uphill both ways, in the snow, to go to school and return home.

In 2016, Jim and Verna moved to assisted living in Columbus, NE to be near their daughter, Joanell, and her family.&nbsp; It was the first time he had lived anywhere but the ranch.&nbsp; In 2017, they returned to Ogallala and moved to Wel-Life Assisted Living.&nbsp; At Wel-Life, he enjoyed keeping the staff on their toes.&nbsp; One incident involved Jim utilizing his golf club to launch a frozen cherry tomato.&nbsp; The tomato soared down the hall into Charlotte’s office and splatted on her desk. Jim had the privilege of cleaning up the mess.

Jim is survived by his children; Kathleen (Creighton) Miller, Joanell (Ron) Klug, and Lee (Brenda) Sillasen; his grandchildren: Andrew (Lynnette) Klug, Angela (Derek) Maursted, Karleen (Chad) Muhle, Darcey (Karl) Saxton, Stacy (Gordon) Decker, Jason (Elizabeth) Sillasen and Erin (Lucas) Sillasen-Banks; thirteen great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, many friends - including all the folks who cared for him at Wel-Life.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a sister Donna (Herb) Ledbetter, his parents-in-law, Coyle and Clara McGreer, and two brothers-in-law, Wilber (Pat) McGreer and Harold, “Mick” (Virginia) McGreer.&nbsp;

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 12, 2023, from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. with family greeting friends from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Draucker Funeral Home Chapel in Ogallala, Ne.

Services will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. at Draucker Funeral Home Chapel, officiating will be Ron Jay.

Inurnment will be in the Ogallala Cemetery, Ogallala, Ne.

A memorial has been established for the Paxton Volunteer Fire Department.

Sillas James "Jim" Sillasen (1930-2023)

Arlene Ann Colgan, 83, formerly of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, at Bryan Health Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

She was born on August 14, 1940, in Lexington, Nebraska to Robert and Alfreda (Christensen) Brown. She graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1958. On June 6, 1959, Arlene was united in marriage to Thomas Colgan at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington. The couple would later return to St. Ann's Catholic Church to renew their vows in 2009. Four children were blessed to this union: Kelly, Kirk, Kris, and Kathy.&nbsp;

The family moved to several locations during their lives. In 1972, they moved to Boulder, Colorado where she worked for King Soopers before moving to Broomfield, Colorado in 1973 until 1979. Then they moved to Arvada, Colorado until 1984 when they decided to move to Eagle, Nebraska. This is where they owned their own grocery store: The Eagle Food Mart. In 1992, the family moved to Johnson Lake, Nebraska before finally settling in Elwood, Nebraska in 2006.

Arlene was a remarkable individual known for her dedication as a housemaker and her exceptional skills as a gardener. She nurtured her green thumb through the years, cultivating vibrant and breathtaking gardens that were admired by all who laid eyes upon them. Arlene's gardens not only brought joy to her but also served as an inspiration for others to create their own.&nbsp;Throughout her life, Arlene approached every task with unwavering determination and meticulous attention to detail. As a housemaker, she transformed her house into a warm and inviting home that radiated love and comfort. Her family took solace in the knowledge that they were cared for by someone who poured heart and soul into creating an atmosphere of harmony. Arlene possessed an unwavering faith and would always make time to go to church on Sundays.&nbsp;Arlene Colgan's legacy is one of creativity, love, and resilience.&nbsp;

Those left to honor her memory are her children, Kirk Colgan and girlfriend Elaine Walker of Centennial, Colorado, Kelly (Gary) Bruning of Casa Grande, Arizona, Kristopher Colgan of Lincoln, Nebraska and Katherine Colgan of Elwood, Nebraska; grandchildren, Nicole Bruning of Phoenix, Arizona and&nbsp; Zachary Bruning of Mesa, Arizona; sister, Julia (Ben) Long of Longmont, Colorado; brother, Ron (Dianne) Brown of Lincoln, Nebraska as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Besides her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas.

There will be no visitation as the family is honoring Arlene's wish of cremation.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 3:30 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington, Nebraska with Father Jose Chavez, officiating.

Arlene Ann Colgan (1940-2023)

William Brewster Ewing, 94, of West Hills, CA, formerly of Glendale, CA, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 10, 2023.&nbsp;

He was the ninth child born to Chatham John and Rachel (Oleson) Ewing of Scotch Plains, New Jersey. After his mother passed in the spring of 1947, he went to live with his oldest sister Rachel and her husband in Connecticut. Bill lived with them until entering the Army in February 1951. During his Army time, he found his wonderful helpmate in Knoxville, TN. On October 16, 1951 he married his sweetheart Alice Berney. Six weeks later, he left to serve in the Army at a hospital in Okinawa, Japan. After serving in Okinawa for 15 months, he was discharged in 1953, and he and Alice settled in Knoxville, TN. Bill then attended the University of Tennessee and received his B.S. in 1956 and M.S. in 1960. Bill and Alice raised five daughters with much love and patience. After college graduation Bill went to work as a TN State Bank Examiner from 1960 until 1965. In 1965 he worked as an Auditor at Fountain City Bank in Knoxville, TN. In December of 1975 he relocated to Glendale, CA with his wife and four daughters. In California he worked for the Federal Reserve as a Bank Examiner. His office was in downtown Los Angeles but Bill traveled the west coast with the Federal Reserve. He retired from banking in 1989.

Throughout his life, Bill loved his family deeply and was devoted to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He prayed faithfully for his family, his country and for all to come to know the Lord as their Savior. He adored his grandchildren &amp; great-grandchildren. He enjoyed eating, traveling, corny jokes &amp; singing hymns. He had a heart for keeping in touch with many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was a very humble, thoughtful &amp; generous man.

He was heartbroken when his wife of 69 years passed away in 2020, and he longed to join her in their eternal heavenly home.

Survivors include five daughters, Cheryl (Keith) Smith of Concord, CA, Brenda (Gary) Widholm of Gothenburg, NE, Elaine (Gary) Gysin of West Hills, CA, Kimberly R Cole of Cumming, GA, Jill (Jimmer) Hanggi of Fullerton, CA; 13- grandchildren; Gena (Stephen) Howarter, Dustin (Lyndsie) Smith, Jordan (Meggie) Widholm, Lauren (Nick) Cushing, Brett and Rachel Gysin, Allison Cole of GA, Ella and Jacob Hanggi of Fullerton, CA, eight great-grandchildren: Abigail, Lexie, Asher and Luke Howarter, Karia and Kortnie Smith, Ellie and Sadie Cushing.

William was preceded in death by spouse, Alice, parents, in-laws, eight brothers and sisters, two great-granddaughters, Hope and Faith Widholm.

William Ewing (1928-2023)

George “Art” Sheldon, 86, of Kearney, Nebraska formerly of Lexington passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society – St. John’s in Kearney.

Art was born on May 16, 1937, in Lisco, Nebraska to Arthur and Nora (Wood) Sheldon. In 1944, at the age of 7, the family to moved to Overton, Nebraska, where he attended public schools and graduated from Overton High School with the class of 1956.

Art was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marilynn Reed on May 25, 1958 in Lexington. Four children were blessed to this union: Deb, Rick, Dan and Dave. The family made their home in Lexington where Art began a long career, over forty years as a massage therapist. Art and Marilyn moved to Kearney in 2019.

Art enjoyed doing mechanical work on his cars and tinkering in the garage. He liked watching old westerns, especially Gunsmoke and Rawhide. Art and Marilyn also enjoyed traveling and he always looked forward to making a trip to Branson.

He was always busy learning new things, being a jokester and enjoyed visiting with people. He loved his job and was very giving and would help others in any way he could.

Survivors include his wife, Marilynn of Kearney; his children, Deb (Bryan) Brummet of Rapid City, South Dakota, Rick (Kim) Sheldon of Kearney, Dan (Terri) Sheldon of Kearney and Dave (Kim) Sheldon of Lexington; grandchildren, Amy (Adrian) Padilla, Aaron Brummet, Brandon Sheldan, Nichole Sheldon, Jeremy (Alisha) Sheldon, Nate (Emily) Sheldon, and Justin (Salene) Sheldon; step-grandchildren, Justen and Shania Gutierrez, Kayla (Taylor) Killion and Cody Moran; great-grandchildren, Aidan, Vincent, and Miranda Padilla, Tony Brummet, Jaxon, Oakley, Dekker Sheldon and Julianne Sheldon; step-great-grandchildren, Karson, Emerson and Thadyn Killion.

Besides his parents, Art was preceded in death by his brother, John; two infant sisters, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington with Pastor Rex Adams, officiating.

Family request casual attire for the Funeral Service.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2023 from 5-7 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.

 </figure>George “Art” Sheldon, 86, of Kearney, Nebraska formerly of Lexington passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society – St. John’s in Kearney.Art was born on May 16, 1937, in Lisco, Nebraska to Arthur and Nora (Wood) Sheldon. In 1944, at the age of 7, the family to moved to Overton, Nebraska, where he attended public schools and graduated from Overton High School with the class of 1956.Art was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marilynn Reed on May 25, 1958 in Lexington. Four children were blessed to this union: Deb, Rick, Dan and Dave. The family made their home in Lexington where Art began a long career, over forty years as a massage therapist. Art and Marilyn moved to Kearney in 2019.Art enjoyed doing mechanical work on his cars and tinkering in the garage. He liked watching old westerns, especially Gunsmoke and Rawhide. Art and Marilyn also enjoyed traveling and he always looked forward to making a trip to Branson.He was always busy learning new things, being a jokester and enjoyed visiting with people.
