L.V. "Cook" Conner was born on October 10, 1927 in Pilot Grove, Texas.&nbsp; He was the son of Arthur Lee and Fanny Connor, and was the youngest of six children:&nbsp; Donald Lee "Red", Captola Anderson, J.B., Billy Ray, Martha Jo Marlar, and L.V. "Cook".&nbsp; He passed away on September 17, 2023.

L.V., better known as "Cook" to family and friends, was raised on a farm where his family raised cotton, livestock and orchards of peaches, pears and pecans.&nbsp; The family owned and operated a cotton gin and managed a cotton harvesting crew.&nbsp; Many stories were shared about the portable roller-skating rink the family set up at county fairs.

He attended grade school at Pilot Grove, TX and high school at Whitewright, TX where he participated in FFA, basketball, and football.&nbsp; L.V. received a college basketball scholarship to play at Texas Christian University (TCU).&nbsp; He completed only one semester before being drafted in the United States Army during World War II.&nbsp; He was a Sargeant in the Signal Corp during the occupation of Japan and proudly served his country until he was honorably discharged along with four of his siblings, all who returned safely home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After being discharged, he returned to Pilot Grove to help on the family farm and worked in nearby Sherman, TX at an iron foundry with his brother, J.B.&nbsp; He applied for and accepted a job at the Phillips Petroleum Company in Borger, Texas as a firefighter, maintenance, and security.&nbsp; During his employment, he was severely injured in a tanker explosion and spent 18 months in a burn unit.&nbsp; In 1953, he moved to Arnold, Nebraska to work as a partner at Central Implement with his brother, Bill, and after 44 years he then retired.

L.V. married Ruth Moritz, the love of his life, on June 8, 1957, and they celebrated over 65 wonderful anniversaries together.&nbsp; They raised two children, Marcia and Brad, while living in Arnold, Nebraska.

L.V. served as a member of the Low-Income Housing Board and Arnold Town Board.&nbsp; He played a large role in bringing a community swimming pool to Arnold.&nbsp; He was an active member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6157, The American Legion Post #130, and whatever his wife, Ruth, was involved in.

He had a deep love for family and was always ready to play with kids and especially his three granddaughters, who meant the world to him.&nbsp; His quick wit and special pranks were known far and wide.&nbsp; Ruth and L.V. hosted many Connor and Moritz gatherings and thoroughly loved having family together.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to three granddaughters.&nbsp;&nbsp;

L.V. was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; parents, Arthur Lee and Fanny; siblings, Donald Lee "Red", Captola Anderson, J.B., Bill, and Martha Jo Marlar.

He is survived by his daughter, Marcia (Dennis) Hill of Julesburg, Colorado; his son, Brad (Marabeth) Connor of Clay Center, Kansas; granddaughters, Aubrie Hill of Arvada, Colorado, Brenna (Christian) Kaufman of Wichita, Kansas, and Payton (Drew) Kuckelman of Marysville, Kansas; sisters-in-law Betti Moritz and Alice Connor; and many very special family members and friends.

Rosary will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arnold, Nebraska on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m.&nbsp; Immediately following Mass, a Graveside Service will be held at the Arnold Cemetery, Arnold, NE, and all are invited to attend the funeral reception at St. Agnes Catholic Church.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Agnes Catholic Church, Arnold, NE, or the Arnold American Legion Post #130 for the cemetery Flag Fund.

Betty Cura-Castillo, 82, of Gothenburg, NE, passed away September 10, 2023, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, NE.

Betty was born in Bakersfield, California to Camille Beatrice (Keough) and Roy Hunnicutt on July 10, 1941. She graduated Bakersfield High in 1959. Betty lived in Bakersfield until she married Robert (Bob) Hockett on August 2, 1959 at the old church in Glennville, CA. They lived in Woody, CA at the old Martin Ranch on Pine Mt. Road. They had three children together: Lynn Dee (Amber), Dawn Michelle and Natalie Jean. They moved back to Bakersfield in 1967. Betty and Bob divorced shortly after in 1968.&nbsp;

Betty moved to Henderson, Nevada around 1969. She met Donald Earl Amen and they married on September 3, 1970. They had one child together: Noel Vincent Hunnicutt. Betty and Donald divorced a year later.&nbsp;Later that year, Betty married Marvin J. Wood. Betty moved back to Bakersfield, CA at the beginning of 1973. She stayed in Bakersfield until June when she moved back to Henderson, Nevada with her two youngest children. Betty managed an apartment complex in Henderson, Nevada. She came back to California in &nbsp;the early 80's when her father had a heart attack. She moved to Santa Rosa, CA for a short while. In 2003, her daughter, Lynn Dee Hockett now Amber Dawn Osborn who had run away and been missing for 27 years was found to be living in Gothenburg, Nebraska. Amber and her family came for a visit in 2004 and Betty moved to Nebraska shortly after. &nbsp;She lived just a couple of blocks from her oldest daughter, Amber. &nbsp;Betty enjoyed writing novels and had written four. She enjoyed art work, knitting, crocheting, cross stitch and her kitten, Baby. &nbsp;

Betty is preceded in death by her parents Roy and Camille Hunnicutt, her brother Gordon and her youngest daughter Natalie Jean Cooper. &nbsp;

Betty is survived by her children Amber Osborn, &nbsp;Dawn Jordan and Vince Hunnicutt. &nbsp;Grandchildren Brian Schroder, Heather Schroder, Staci Gonzalez, Michael Jordan, Tyler Hunnicutt, Jordann Shepherd, Hailee Hunnicutt. Great grandchildren Macey Schroder, Ryker Schroder, Kyler Schroder, Tyson Jordan, Ayden Jordan, Rylee Jordan, Oliver Gonzalez, Lucas Gonzalez, Cohen Brandom and Wrenlee Brandom. &nbsp;&nbsp;Celebration of Life will be at a later date. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Betty Cura-Castillo (1941-2023)

Margaret “Margie” Anne Walsh Warren was born December 28, 1950, in Centerville, Iowa to Howard and Wanda (Dorsett) Walsh, and passed away on Tuesday, September 19th at her home. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Margie attended grade school in Brownlee, and graduated from High School in Thedford, Nebraska in 1969.

On Valentine’s Day, 1969, Margie married Bill Warren, her high school sweetheart. &nbsp;Following graduation, Margie joined Bill in Karlsruhe, Germany, where he was serving in the US Army. Margie worked in the American Express Bank and worked nights helping Bill at the military movie theater, where he was the cashier and projectionist. After watching the movies, they cleaned the theater.&nbsp;

When Bill could get a free weekend, they drove their 1960 Opal, and traveled. Bill bought a 5 x 7 tent at the PX, and they camped out on most of their adventures through Europe. The military allotted the soldiers only so many Esso gas coupons a month.

Following life in Germany, they moved to Kearney where they both enrolled at Kearney State College. Bill had a part-time tree cutting and grass mowing business and Margie worked at the Platte Valley State Bank and Good Samaritan Hospital, while also taking college courses. &nbsp;In December 1973 after Bill’s graduation, they moved to the Warren Ranch, south of Seneca. Margie worked for the Hooker County Attorney, and the Thedford Sale Barn.

Tony and Christie were born November 9, 1976, and 1978. Margie loved being a Mom and always said whatever age her kids were, it was her favorite age.

Shortly after Tony’s birth, Margie joined her Mom, Wanda, selling advertising specialties for Newton Mfg Co. She continued this for the next 15 years.

Margie was a First Responder, then an EMT. Bill teased her and said if there ever was an emergency, she would be gone to training. That came to pass one time while she was at a monthly EMT meeting. Tony stuck a pitchfork through his foot while burning feed sacks.

On June 28, 1989, Margie lost the love of her life. &nbsp;Bill passed away after a 7-month battle with esophageal cancer, at the age of 38. It was extremely difficult for Margie without him. He had been her rock since they were 17 years old. &nbsp;A few months later, needing to leave the ranch, Margie and the kids moved to Stapleton. This was a very dark and empty time in her life. She felt abandoned and let down by many. &nbsp;Margie continued to sell advertising specialties for 2 more years, and also worked as a Census Crew Leader, during the 1990 and 2000 Census.

Two years after Bill’s death, Margie and the kids were living near Ansley, Nebraska. Margie volunteered as an EMT and worked part time for both medical clinics in Broken Bow, and at the satellite clinic in Dunning. &nbsp;Soon, she worked full time at Central Nebraska Medical Clinic, in Ansley and Broken Bow. During this time, Margie also worked as a caregiver for elderly or disabled people.

Margie moved northwest of Kearney in March 2004, and worked for the Spine and Orthopedic Clinic. In August 2004, she became a Grandma for the first time, and her world became a more beautiful place. In December 2007, she welcomed her 6th grandchild in North Carolina. The day after returning home, her stepfather passed away and three weeks later, Margie’s Mom had a heart attack. &nbsp;She became a full-time caretaker for her Mom, and moved into town. They enjoyed several years traveling in Margie’s motor home before her Mom’s death in 2012.

After her Mom passed away, Margie volunteered at the Archway, and for AseraCare Hospice. She moved back to the country, southwest of Kearney. She was busy again, continuing to care for people in their homes, volunteering for hospice and attending the grandkids school events.&nbsp;

In 2015, Margie was diagnosed with melanoma, and in November 2019, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in January 2020, and again in February for melanoma.

By the end of February 2020, Covid-19 hit the country, and changed everyone’s life.&nbsp;

In October 2022, Margie’s cancer returned, and there was nothing that could be done. She decided to live her best life, as long as she could. She and Christie made a trip to Floyd, Virginia, where Tony and his family now live.

Throughout her life, Margie was involved in many community projects and activities. &nbsp;She served on the Thomas County Library Board and the Election Board in Seneca for many years. She was a member of the Seneca Extension Club, served on the EMS Council in North Platte, was a member of the Nebraska Cattlewomen, served as President and Sec/Treas for the Ansley EMT squad, was a member of the Ansley Crisis Team, the American Legion Auxiliary in Thedford and Ansley, Sec/Treas of the Ansley FFAMW, a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ansley, and a CCD religious education instructor in Ansley and Mason City. &nbsp;She was instrumental in the pilot program with Bryan Memorial Hospital, assisting the rural Nebraska EMT squads in purchasing defibrillators for their ambulances. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Grandma Margie was never too busy to lend a hand or do something fun with the Grandkids. She always made a list of things to do, and they loved that. Grandma and Kyler could be pretty mischievous, if left together, and a lot of work always got done when the Grandkids were visiting Grandma. &nbsp;

There were several memorable things Margie told her kids as they were growing up. &nbsp;When they wanted to stay out later than was allowed, she would say, “Nothing good happens after midnight,” and when they wanted to do something she didn’t think was wise, she would say, “I am your common sense until you have some.” &nbsp;Whenever a project needed done, she always said, “Let’s just think about this.” Needless to say, over the years, the kids could anticipate those words, and say them before she did. Early in her life, Margie adopted the expression, “Never Let Em See You Sweat.” Don’t wear your feelings on your sleeve. If something needed done, just do it, and don’t show you don’t necessarily know how, or that it bothered you. Her kids and Grandkids knew that expression well.

Survivors include her two children: &nbsp;Tony (Jennifer) Warren of Floyd, Virginia, and Christie (Riley) Jones of Sumner, Nebraska, as well as her eight &nbsp;grandchildren: &nbsp;Georgana (Alex) Oden, Chyna Scharpe, Nicholas &amp; Matthew Warren, Reece, Maddox, Kyler and Cruz Jones, as well as her great grandson Jace Alexander Oden, &nbsp;brothers: Randy Walsh of Kearney, and David (Becky) Walsh of North Platte, sister: Beverly Walsh Bolton of Webb City, Missouri, and stepsister Ann (Trussell) Palmer of Syracuse, KS, as well as many Warren brothers &amp; sisters in law, and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;Margie was preceded in death by her husband Bill Warren in 1989, her father Howard Walsh in 1995, mother Wanda Trussell in 2012, step father Van Trussell, sisters in law, Diane Walsh and Mary Warren Roy, brother in law Marcus Bolton, and nephew BJ Warren.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 24th at Govier Brother’s Mortuary in Broken Bow with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. &nbsp;Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 25, 2023, at 11:00 CT in Seneca, Nebraska at the Seneca Auditorium. &nbsp;Burial will be at the Seneca Cemetery in Seneca where Margie will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Bill, and near her parents, Howard and Wanda following the service. Memorials may be sent to the Seneca Cemetery, Seneca Auditorium or AseraCare Hospice in Kearney. The day after returning home, her stepfather passed away and three weeks later, Margie’s Mom had a heart attack. &nbsp;She became a full-time caretaker for her Mom, and moved into town. They enjoyed several years traveling in Margie’s motor home before her Mom’s death in 2012.After her Mom passed away, Margie volunteered at the Archway, and for AseraCare Hospice. She moved back to the country, southwest of Kearney. She was busy again, continuing to care for people in their homes, volunteering for hospice and attending the grandkids school events.&nbsp;In 2015, Margie was diagnosed with melanoma, and in November 2019, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in January 2020, and again in February for melanoma.By the end of February 2020, Covid-19 hit the country, and changed everyone’s life.&nbsp;In October 2022, Margie’s cancer returned, and there was nothing that could be done. She decided to live her best life, as long as she could. She and Christie made a trip to Floyd, Virginia, where Tony and his family now live.Throughout her life, Margie was involved in many community projects and activities. &nbsp;She served on the Thomas County Library Board and the Election Board in Seneca for many years. She was a member of the Seneca Extension Club, served on the EMS Council in North Platte, was a member of the Nebraska Cattlewomen, served as President and Sec/Treas for the Ansley EMT squad, was a member of the Ansley Crisis Team, the American Legion Auxiliary in Thedford and Ansley, Sec/Treas of the Ansley FFAMW, a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ansley, and a CCD religious education instructor in Ansley and Mason City. &nbsp;She was instrumental in the pilot program with Bryan Memorial Hospital, assisting the rural Nebraska EMT squads in purchasing defibrillators for their ambulances. &nbsp;&nbsp;Grandma Margie was never too busy to lend a hand or do something fun with the Grandkids. She always made a list of things to do, and they loved that. Grandma and Kyler could be pretty mischievous, if left together, and a lot of work always got done when the Grandkids were visiting Grandma. &nbsp;There were several memorable things Margie told her kids as they were growing up. &nbsp;When they wanted to stay out later than was allowed, she would say, “Nothing good happens after midnight,” and when they wanted to do something she didn’t think was wise, she would say, “I am your common sense until you have some.” &nbsp;Whenever a project needed done, she always said, “Let’s just think about this.” Needless to say, over the years, the kids could anticipate those words, and say them before she did. Early in her life, Margie adopted the expression, “Never Let Em See You Sweat.” Don’t wear your feelings on your sleeve. If something needed done, just do it, and don’t show you don’t necessarily know how, or that it bothered you. Her kids and Grandkids knew that expression well.Survivors include her two children: &nbsp;Tony (Jennifer) Warren of Floyd, Virginia, and Christie (Riley) Jones of Sumner, Nebraska, as well as her eight &nbsp;grandchildren: &nbsp;Georgana (Alex) Oden, Chyna Scharpe, Nicholas &amp; Matthew Warren, Reece, Maddox, Kyler and Cruz Jones, as well as her great grandson Jace Alexander Oden, &nbsp;brothers: Randy Walsh of Kearney, and David (Becky) Walsh of North Platte, sister: Beverly Walsh Bolton of Webb City, Missouri, and stepsister Ann (Trussell) Palmer of Syracuse, KS, as well as many Warren brothers &amp; sisters in law, and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;Margie was preceded in death by her husband Bill Warren in 1989, her father Howard Walsh in 1995, mother Wanda Trussell in 2012, step father Van Trussell, sisters in law, Diane Walsh and Mary Warren Roy, brother in law Marcus Bolton, and nephew BJ Warren.A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 24th at Govier Brother’s Mortuary in Broken Bow with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. &nbsp;Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 25, 2023, at 11:00 CT in Seneca, Nebraska at the Seneca Auditorium. &nbsp;Burial will be at the Seneca Cemetery in Seneca where Margie will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Bill, and near her parents, Howard and Wanda following the service. Margie Walsh Warren (1950-2023)

Sue Russell passed away peacefully on September 19, 2023, surrounded by her family, after a long ordeal with pancreatic cancer. She will be remembered as a dedicated and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She gracefully joins her parents in heaven.

Sue was born on May 19, 1956, in Stapleton, NE, to Grant and Lois Figard. She enjoyed growing up in the quiet beauty of the Nebraska Sandhills with her siblings Roger and Vicki. Sue married Garold Russell in 1976. Their son Darin was born in 1986; he would marry Caitlin in 2019.

Sue acquired her Nursing license in 1976, but ultimately fell in love with ranching with her husband near the Dismal River. She also spent 20 years as secretary at Thedford Elementary School, touching the lives of many students with enthusiasm and warm generosity. Additionally, Sue completed the Master Gardener program through UNL Extension, and was known as a passionate gardener. She spent her summers cultivating (and weeding) beautiful flower beds at her home and brought a unique and irreplaceable beauty to her corner of the Sandhills. Joining her in the garden throughout the years were a menagerie of dogs, cats, birds, and other creatures equally cherished.

In keeping with Sue’s wishes, an informal memorial reception is scheduled for October 1, 2023, in Thedford, NE, at the old gymnasium in the High School. All those who wish to remember Sue are welcome to visit at any time between 2 and 4 PM to share stories, condolences, and refreshments. Sue Russell (1956-2023)

&nbsp; Ralph Eugene Langhofer was born to David Langhofer, Jr. and Minnie (Abel) on June 15, 1936, in Bayard, NE. Ralph grew up in Bayard and graduated from Bayard High School in 1954. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from Chadron State College while serving as an E2 in the Air National Guard. Ralph began his career at Pure Grow Chemical. Shortly thereafter, he married Linda Townsend and expanded their family by having two daughters, Heather and Wendi.

In 1973, Ralph was recruited and moved his family to Imperial, NE where he joined the team at Brown Chemical, Co. After a few years, he transitioned to Chase County Grain to advance his career where he was soon promoted to General Manager. In 1977, he married Lois Ann Likens until she passed in 1991. Ralph began his retirement years in 1997.Ralph excelled professionally, achieving recognition for his management abilities. He also found success in personal interests, from football and shooting to bowling and golf. This can be seen through the numerous trophies and score cards found tucked away.

Ralph enjoyed all aspects of golf, playing, watching, and organizing a fantasy golf league. He spent many hours in his “pro shop” (in his basement), providing custom clubs and professionally fitting them for family, friends and clients. His analytical mind and attention to detail helped him bring new technology to the area.

Ralph’s amazing qualities are what attracted Patricia (Pat) to him. They enjoyed each other’s company. Over the years, one would know how to find them as they were either out to eat on date night or spending time together on the course.

Ralph is survived by his life partner, Patricia (Pat) O’Brien; daughters, Heather Langhofer-Classen of Phoenix, AZ and Wendi Nordhausen (Nate) of Wauneta, NE; stepdaughters, Valerie Brush and Yolanda Ambrosek; sister-in-law, Paulyne Langhofer; his grandchildren, Aaron Classen (Cindy) of Phoenix, AZ, Zackary Classen of Lincoln, NE, Brooklyn Brott (Tristan) of Ogallala, NE, Hannah Curl (Luke) and Brody Nordhausen, all of Wauneta, NE; Great grandchildren, Jaxon Classen, baby Classen, Emerson Brott and Haven Curl; step grandchildren, Clint Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Curtis Johnson, Joseph Ambrosek, and Gerald Ambrosek; nephew, Denis Langhofer; and niece, Renee Burke.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Linda and Lois Ann; stepdaughter, Lynette Johnson; and brother, Robert Langhofer.

Karen Willa Kroeker, 67, of Brady, Nebraska, died September 18, 2023 at Stone Hearth Estates in Gothenburg, NE.

She was born July 8, 1956 in Kearney, NE, daughter of Willard and Marian (Jensen) Kroeker.

Karen grew up in the Kearney area and graduated from Kearney High School in 1974. Karen married William (Bill) Clark and to this union four children were born: Marshall, Jason, Jeremiah, and Benjamin.&nbsp;

While raising her children, Karen babysat for others and was employed at various businesses including Vend-It, Cash-Way, and the Educational Service Unit #10. In 1989, she began employment at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, performing clerical work. She began nursing school in 1990. While still raising her boys, Karen worked nights as a Telemetry Tech/Aide and attended school during the day. She graduated in 1994 with her degree in nursing. She worked as a float nurse for a year then began her 26-year tenure in Intensive Care. Karen was employed by Good Samaritan for a total of 32 years. Life took Karen and Bill on different paths and she moved to a home in Valley View Park in Kearney. In 1996 she bought land and built a home north of Riverdale and in 2007 moved to Wild Horse Valley, north of Brady. She attended Svea Dal Church.

Karen was known for her radiant smile, quiet demeanor, faithful friendship, and strong work ethic. It was not unusual to hear her singing to her patients, and she became a well respected co-worker and nurse. Karen loved the outdoors, spending time with her flowers and garden. Many a bottle calf she fed and she helped often with a cow/calf operation. Her hobbies also included furniture refinishing, quilting, golfing, cooking, and her chickens and peacocks. She was always steady and patient. Her greatest love were her boys and the legacy they left her. She was taken from them after a grueling battle with cancer.&nbsp;

Survivors include her sons, Marshall (Samantha), Jason (Linda), Jeremiah (Meggan), Benjamin (Shari), grandchildren, Lucas, Isaac, Liliana, Kenzie, Keenan, Emma, Owen, Connor, Coraleen, Joseph and Vincent, brothers, Ken (Vicki) Kroeker, Phil (Cindy) Kroeker, Steve (Bonnie) Kroeker along with nieces and a nephew, lifelong friend Ruby, and a host of friends.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Marian, and her Grandma Jensen.

Beverly attended and graduated school from McAlester High School in McAlester, Oklahoma. After high school, Beverly attended East Central University in Ada Oklahoma.&nbsp; She met and married James ‘Jim’ Teter in Tulsa on June 19, 1976. They were married for 47 years.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Beverly and Jim enjoyed spending time together, so much so, that they went on 14 cruises: to Alaska, Hawaii, New England, and even a 40-day cruise from Vancouver, Canada to New Zealand. When they weren’t cruising, Beverly worked as a bookkeeper and enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, crocheting, and sewing.&nbsp; She was happiest when spending time with their family.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Beverly passed away Friday, September 15, 2023 at her home, surrounded by family. She was 70 years of age.

Susan Arndt, 72, of Oshkosh passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023 at her home.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 21, 2023 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Pastor Scotty Ray officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Oshkosh City Cemetery.

Susan&nbsp;joined the family of Corwin and Michelle Arndt on August 6, 1972, marrying Corwin in Kearney, NE. &nbsp;Matthew Arndt was born on June 23,&nbsp;1975&nbsp;in Oshkosh, NE. &nbsp;

After a year of being the librarian at North Platte St. Pat’s, Susan returned to Oshkosh, NE during the summer of 1979.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 1979-1980&nbsp;school year was the start of her&nbsp;35-year librarian/media specialist career at Leyton Public Schools in Dalton and Gurley, NE. &nbsp;After driving hundreds of thousands of miles through sunshine, rain, and snow, 100+ miles every day, she retired in&nbsp;May,&nbsp;2014. &nbsp;Susan took great pride in her library, her annual school/community&nbsp;tailgate party,&nbsp;and sponsoring&nbsp;the National Honor Society&nbsp;including&nbsp;their balloon fundraiser. &nbsp;But most of all, she valued her&nbsp;lifelong personal friendships with fellow staff and students.

Susan stayed extremely busy with Job’s Daughters, acting as the Past Bethel Guardian of Bethel #46 Oshkosh and the Past Grand Guardian&nbsp;for the&nbsp;State of Nebraska 1991-92 International Order of Job’s Daughters. &nbsp;She was also a member of the Oshkosh Chapter #264 Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1984. &nbsp;In December 2020, Susan became a&nbsp;50-year member, and held the Secretary position since 2020.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was also a member and council member of the St. Mark’s Lutheran church in Oshkosh,&nbsp;always&nbsp;decorating the church for holidays and tending to the flower gardens.

Grandma Sue, as often recognized by the patrons of Creek Valley Schools, always showed huge support for&nbsp;Sami and Eli’s&nbsp;sporting events and activities. And everyone knew that Susan liked to&nbsp;mow…A LOT. &nbsp;She was always on that zero-turn mower keeping the yard in immaculate condition and the weeds in check. She loved keeping up her flower gardens, lilac, and rose bushes. &nbsp;The house inside was never lacking seasonally decorated knick-knacks (and who couldn’t admire a good nativity scene).&nbsp;She wasn’t scared to test the penny slots from time to time, but never had a definite answer as to how she did upon return from the casino. &nbsp;She was always eager to sit down and listen to&nbsp;Matt and Brandi’s hunting/fishing/travel stories and Michelle and Dan’s pharmacy/farming/kid’s stories.

Corwin and Susan were married 38 years before Corwin’s passing on December 31, 2010. &nbsp;Susan passed away in her home on September 17, 2023, a place she dearly loved.

Preceded in death by her parents David and Helen Fickes, husband Corwin Arndt, brother Wayne Fickes, sister-in-law Marlynn Fickes, brother-in-law Gary Purchase, and her favorite dog Coco.

Survived by son Matthew (Brandi) Arndt, daughter Michelle (Dan) Schmid,&nbsp;and&nbsp;grandchildren Samantha and Eli Schmid.&nbsp;

Memorials can be made out to Matthew Arndt. &nbsp;Donations will be distributed to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and Leyton Public Schools.

Susan Arndt (1951-2023)

Cliff Hermance, age 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 28, 2023.&nbsp; Cliff was surrounded by family at home in Portland, Oregon.&nbsp;

Carl Clifford Hermance was born May 29, 1929, in Raymond, Nebraska, and grew up there playing baseball, basketball, music, hunting, and fishing.&nbsp; &nbsp;He earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln).&nbsp; He served in the United States Air Force as a member of the North Africa 1603 Air Base Group from 1950 through 1953. Cliff was proud of his military service to our Country.&nbsp; He joined the newly-formed United States Air Force in 1950 at the beginning of the Korean War and was assigned as an air transport specialist to the USAF Europe-North Africa command.&nbsp; In addition to developing the character and competencies of an Airman, Cliff was also introduced to the people, culture, customs, and histories of the many African and European sites he visited.&nbsp; &nbsp;These made a lasting impression on the young Airman who would later relate his experiences (serious and funny) to family and friends.&nbsp; &nbsp;Cliff revisited some of these sites in later years marveling at the changes but also pointing out the places and events of his memories.&nbsp; &nbsp;He attended reunions of his Basic Military Training recruiting class and of his Air Base Group and chose Fort McPherson National Cemetery as his final resting place.

As the Korean War drew to a close, Cliff was transferred to Warren AFB in Cheyenne where he learned to fly fish, hike, and camp. Later he would take his family to the mountains of the Snowy Range to learn and experience the same, leading to many fond memories and funny stories. Cliff enjoyed fishing at Lake McConaughy and in later years liked to drive around the lake and watch the seasons change.

After leaving the Service, he began his career in teaching and coaching at Stuart, Nebraska, and moved to other teaching and coaching positions in Kansas City, Kansas, Loup City, Nebraska, and Ogallala, Nebraska. Following his career in the classroom and athletic facilities, Cliff became the Superintendent of Rural Schools and made many lasting friendships in the districts. Later he joined the administration of the Mid-Plains Community College system as Director of Recruiting and Admissions, helping to grow the student population and strengthen the academic program.&nbsp; This position once again brought him in contact with students and school staffers from all over western Nebraska leading to many friendships maintained even after his retirement.&nbsp;An educator and athletic coach first, Cliff inspired generations to achieve and face challenges with poise and determination. A strong believer in the value of education, he took pride in the academic success of others, including family members whose graduation photos adorned the walls of his bedroom. Occasionally, former students would write him later in life to thank him or do the same person-to-person at some event where their paths might cross. Humbled by these experiences but also happy that he had a positive effect, these moments were dear to him.&nbsp; &nbsp; Even in retirement, Cliff continued to champion education and was pleased to be able to award the Cliff and Ruth Hermance Scholarship annually to a graduating senior of Ogallala High School to help them in the pursuit of higher education.

Cliff had an outgoing personality, made friends easily, loved to joke, and held on to his friendships throughout life.&nbsp; These include friends from his youth, military service, college and continuing education, students, colleagues, neighbors, social clubs, relatives, church members, coffee groups, even his doctors and healthcare givers, and many more too numerous to name.&nbsp; &nbsp;He was at his best when he was in the company of friends.

Cliff was a life-long sportsman and outdoorsman learning from his father, an avid hunter, and master of Brittany Spaniels.&nbsp; &nbsp;Cliff loved to hunt ducks and geese all around Ogallala and the area and spent many enjoyable days in his blinds with friends, his son Douglas, and his beloved Lab, Jake.&nbsp; &nbsp;Only a couple of years ago he had a great time taking his grandchildren Jennifer and Douglas duck hunting for the first time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Above all, Cliff was a devoted family man and husband to Ruth.&nbsp; Cliff and Ruth Olson first met in Raymond when Cliff and his father hunted ducks on Ruth’s family farm.&nbsp; &nbsp;Cliff liked to call Ruth his Svenska Flicka (Swedish Girl), his term of endearment owing to her Swedish heritage.&nbsp; They were married June 15, 1952, in Raymond and started their lives together in Cheyenne Wyoming where Cliff was stationed at the time.&nbsp; &nbsp;Cliff was loved by his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren each of whom hold great memories and tell wonderfully touching and funny stories of their times with him. Cliff was a teacher, coach, friend, and family man.&nbsp; All will miss him deeply and are grateful for their time with him.&nbsp;

Cliff was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Sarah (Barton) Hermance, his sister, Loretta Sterns, and his granddaughter, Alisa Burnham.

Cliff is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ruth (Olson), and his children Jeffrey (Catherine) Hermance, Patricia (Robert) Garsha, Judy (Neal) Burnham, Suzi Ruhlman, and Douglas (Myrna) Hermance.&nbsp; &nbsp;His grandchildren Elijah (Audrey) Garsha, Jeremiah (Jamie) Garsha, Daniel Garsha, Nicholas Burnham, Drew (Christina) Burnham, Jacob (Michelle) Burnham, Catherine Ruhlman, Robert Ruhlman, Jennifer Hermance, Douglas Hermance, Chelsea Hermance, twelve great-grandchildren, and many more wonderful cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 10th, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Curt Magelky at United Methodist Church in Ogallala, Nebraska.

Inurnment will take place in Fort McPherson Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska.

Carl "Cliff" Hermance (1929-2023)

Edward Elmer Claflin, 88, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, passed away September 16, 2023 at Gothenburg Health in Gothenburg, NE.

He was born February 3, 1935 at home near Stockville, NE, son of Wayne and Fay Claflin.

Ed was a member of Nebraska State Callers, and Caller Lab. He enjoyed calling Square Dancing, doing woodworking, collecting, hunting, fishing, camping. On June 2, 1957 Ed married Shirley Meester, to this union two daughters were born, Michelle and Melissa. Ed worked for Co-op for many years and later as a diesel mechanic for Lepp and Osterloh. After retiring Ed drove cars for Pony Express as well as continued to call square dances, and served many years on the Gothenburg Honor Guard. In his later years Ed enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren working on cars, traveling, riding his motorcycle, taking his car to car shows and cooking any chance he got. &nbsp;He enjoyed supporting the Guardians of the Children, especially cooking chili for there fundraisers.&nbsp;

Survivors include his two daughters, Michelle (Mike) Courtney of Lincoln, Melissa (Terry) Walker of Gothenburg, grandson, Levi (Mackinzie) Walker, granddaughter, Courtnee (Jordan) Magnuson, sister, Cindy (Ron) Sabin and their son Colby (Christin) Claflin, brother, Mike (Deb) Claflin, great-grandchildren, Khloe, Oakley, Onyx Magnuson and Josephene, honorary grandson Keyan Anderson and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Edward was preceded in death by wife, Shirley Georgene, parents, Wayne and Fay, grandson, Tyler Lee Walker, sisters, Nita, Donna, Marilyn, Ruth, in-laws, Walter and Hannah Meester.

Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, NE; Monday, September 25, 2023, 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm, with the family present from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

Edward Elmer Claflin (1935-2023)

&nbsp; Treva Mae Lynes peacefully passed away at Linden Court on September 18,2023, at age 94. Treva, the daughter of Herbert and Elizabeth Leach, was born at home near Lemoyne, NE, on December 16, 1928.&nbsp; The family moved close to Sutherland in 1932 then, after work began on the Sutherland Reservoir, they moved again, this time to a farm 10 miles southwest of North Platte. Treva's schooling began in 1934 when she attended rural school. She then attended Leth Rural School and North Platte High School through the spring of '45.&nbsp; Treva went on to earn her teaching certificate from Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis then taught in Lincoln County rural schools from 1946-48. During the War years of 1942 to '46, it was hard to find men to work in the fields so Treva and her sister, Twila, helped their dad.&nbsp; Because they had to use horses to work and herd cattle Treva learned to love riding horses. In 1949, Treva married Willard Connor and they had a son, Arlis. On December 31, 1952, she wed Clive Lynes and they made their home at Paxton.&nbsp; After Clive passed away in 1990, Treva had a long time companion, Bob Boettger. Treva and Clive moved to North Platte in 1956 and went to work on the Leach Ranch until 1970.&nbsp; In the fall of '75 Treva started working for J.M. McDonald and was there until the store closed 8 years later.&nbsp; She then worked at Alco for 27 years and retired in 2008. Along with working, Treva was a 4-H leader for 10 years and served as Director on the District 122 School Board for several years.&nbsp; She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, sewing, embroidering, and taking care of her house plants. Along with her husband, Clive, Treva was preceded in death by her daughter, Mavis Poland; companion Bob Boettger; her parents; infant brother, Gavin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Twila and Bill Kruger, Lela and Myron Morash and Jenevie and Delbert Tobey; and sisters-in-law, Shadra Leach and Char Leach. Treva, the daughter of Herbert and Elizabeth Leach, was born at home near Lemoyne, NE, on December 16, 1928.&nbsp; The family moved close to Sutherland in 1932 then, after work began on the Sutherland Reservoir, they moved again, this time to a farm 10 miles southwest of North Platte. Treva's schooling began in 1934 when she attended rural school. She then attended Leth Rural School and North Platte High School through the spring of '45.&nbsp; Treva went on to earn her teaching certificate from Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis then taught in Lincoln County rural schools from 1946-48. Treva Mae Lynes (1928-2023)

Elaine M. Soncksen, age 90, of Hayes Center, NE passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Community Hospital in McCook.

Elaine was born July 11, 1933 in Blue Hill, NE to parents Fred J and Louise S (Buck) Luhn. She was the youngest of five siblings. The family moved to McCook in 1940 and Elaine graduated from McCook High School with the Class of 1951.

On June 14, 1953, Elaine married the love of her life, Arthur Soncksen in McCook. They were blessed with three children: Beverly, Michael and Bradley. &nbsp;Arthur and Elaine recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Elaine was a member of Peace Lutheran Church where she enjoyed serving in a variety of ways. She was also local 4-H Leader and member of the Sunny Hills Stitcher’s Club.&nbsp; Elaine was a key member of the family’s farming operation and will be remembered for the many large gardens she grew over the years. &nbsp;

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Beverly Soncksen; and siblings, Gertrude (Gus) Schultz, Vera (Rue) Troester, Marlin (Dorthy) Luhn and Wilma Jean Luhn.

Elaine M Soncksen (1933-2023)

&nbsp; Lynn Gordon Haarberg was born July 10, 1941, in Imperial, Nebraska to Henry and Esther (Buss) Haarberg. Lynn grew up in the Wauneta area and attended Redeemer Lutheran Church and was baptized on July 27, 1941 and later confirmed into the faith on April 3, 1955.

Lynn graduated from Wauneta High School in 1959 and worked briefly for Frontier Airlines in Lincoln, NE. This lasted a short period of time until Lynn was drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served his country from 1964-1965 during the Viet Nam Conflict.

Upon his return from service, Lynn met and married the love of his life, Darlene Baldonado on November 26, 1967 a love which lasted until 2016 when Darlene passed away. The couple farmed and ranched Charolais Cattle on the North Divide until retiring in 2004 when Lynn and Darlene decided to move into Wauneta.

Lynn is survived by his daughter, Theresa Haarberg of Lincoln, NE; his brother, Kent Haarberg and wife Elaine of Kearney, NE; sister-in-law, Sharon Haarberg of Wauneta, NE.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Haarberg; his parents; and brother, Lavon Haarberg.

On September 17, 2023, Angela “Angel” Therece Robinson, died at Great Plains Health, at the age of 51. &nbsp;She was born to Stanley and Sandra (Brown) Pittman on January 20, 1972, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Angel attended school in Barnesville until the start of her middle school career when she then moved to Marysville, California with her family. &nbsp;In 1988, she met Benny Robinson, as a sophomore in high school. &nbsp;Upon graduating Maysville High School in 1990, the couple was wed. &nbsp;In 1993, they decided to move to Nebraska and start a family. &nbsp;The two adopted their daughter, Rebecca, 1994. &nbsp;Angel worked here and there in customer service jobs but was most proud of being a mother and a wife. &nbsp;She was incredibly artistic, from painting to macramé. &nbsp;Angel was headstrong but also very kind, always putting others needs before her own. &nbsp;

Survivors of Angel include her husband, Benny Robinson; daughter, Rebecca (Travis) Beck; granddaughter, Taniah; siblings, Linda Scarlet, Priscilla, Daniel “DJ”, Denise, Shirley, and Stanley Pittman; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Sandra.

Angela "Angel" T. Robinson (1972-2023)

Larry G. Harvill passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at his home in Cozad at the age of 84. Larry was born May 29, 1939 to Cleo Alden and Hazel Margaret (McElravy) Harvill at the family home in Surprise, Nebraska. His family moved to Gresham, Oak and finally Tilden, Nebraska where Larry graduated from Tilden High School with the class of 1957. Larry was a National Merit Scholar finalist and was offered a full ride scholarship to three colleges: Brown, Stanford and Tulane. Larry chose Tulane and studied Civil Engineering for three semesters before changing his major to theology and lost his scholarship. He returned home for a short time and decided to join the U.S. Air Force in 1959. He attended basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. He was then sent to Stanford to become a Russian linguist and to Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, Texas for extensive cryptology specialist training. Following basic training he was sent to Berlin, Germany. During the day, he would listen to radio communication from Russian and German pilots for any intelligence. He managed the base theater in the evenings, where he met his future wife, Gertrud. They were married on November 28, 1963. Larry returned home to the USA with his wife and children after 9 months of marriage. He worked for Tip Top Products in Omaha as a cost accountant clerk, at Omaha Steel as assistant controller and then National Crane in Waverly as cost accountant manager. At this time he purchased the State Theatre in Auburn, Nebraska and operated it for 18 months. The family moved to Cozad, Nebraska in 1978. He was CFO at Nebraska Plastics until 2014. He started his own business, Harvill Tax Service and continued to serve the community until his retirement. Larry was a faithful and devoted member of the Cozad United Methodist Church, serving as financial secretary, sound specialist, and past board member of Camp Comeca. He was a current or past member of, or held a position at:&nbsp; Cozad Food Pantry, American Legion, Wilson Public Library Board, Cozad Housing Authority Board, Cozad Grand Generation Board, Henri Museum Board, MENSA, World of Entertainment Board, Habitat for Humanity, Dawson County Red Cross, City Council, Legion Dist. 5 Baseball, Cub Scouts and Junior Achievement Program. He was a past member of the Masons, Elks Lodge and Eagles organizations. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gertrud; brother, Leo Harvill; and sons, Christian and David Harvill. Larry G. Harvill (1939-2023)

A Funeral Service for Darlene (Muir) Haines will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bauer-Torrey &amp; Mach Funeral Home in Alma, Nebraska, with Pastor Scott Randall officiating. &nbsp;Interment will follow at the Naponee Cemetery, Naponee, Nebraska.

Darlene Mae (Muir) (Kinnaman) Haines, 93, of North Platte, Nebraska, gained her angel wings on September 13, 2023, surrounded by her family, at Linden Court Nursing Home in North Platte. She was born on November 1, 1929, on the farm below the Harlan County Reservoir (Republican City) to Robert Henry and Lillie Fae (Richter) Muir. She grew up in Naponee and attended District #42 country school up to the &nbsp;6th grade, and then graduated from Naponee High School with the class of 1948. Darlene then attended Kearney State College.&nbsp;

After graduating college, she taught school for four years at Naponee. She was joined in marriage to Manard Kinnaman and was blessed with a daughter, Janice. She was widowed shortly after Janice’s birth.&nbsp;

Darlene was united in marriage to Johnnie “John” Haines in 1953, to which two children were born: Theresa and Rickie. Darlene returned to being a full-time mother and housewife while living on the farm, north of Naponee for 14 years. In 1963, Darlene and family moved to North Platte. Darlene returned to work for North Platte School System for six years.&nbsp;

In 1979, she was blessed to raise three beautiful grandchildren with a lot of good memories. Darlene had a great bond with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She loved them all very much. Darlene was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit # 364 for 69 years and the Congregational Church at Naponee.&nbsp;

Darlene’s hobbies included spending time with family, canning, sewing, cooking, and baking, with dancing being her favorite. She was preceded in death by her two husbands: Manard Kinnaman and John Haines; a daughter, Janice; her parents; her grandparents: two brothers: Bobby (Jackie), and Donnie (Margaret); one great-grandchild, Bentley Hinrichs; and numerous relatives and friends.&nbsp;

Survivors include: her children, Theresa (Doug) Kelley of North Platte; and Rickie (Kristina) Haines of Johnson Lake, Nebraska; twelve grandchildren: Becky Smith-Matthewson, Bernie Smith, Kerri (Corey) Harvey, Tamara (Nolan) Clouse, Jason (Callie) Haines, Timothy (Mary Beth) Kelley, Tonya (Chris) Hinrichs, Jeremey Haines, Leigh KaRenn (Daryl) Strecker, Trishelle (Wayne) Barton, Tara (Beau) Sheets, and Brett Warta; 26 great-grandchildren: Kellie Matthewson, Abby (Tevin) Erickson, Larry (Christy) Erickson III, Hannah Strecker, Kamdyn Sheets, Ty Sheets, Avery Strecker, Matthew Erickson, Clay Sheets, Drew Strecker, Keeghan Clouse, Braeden Clouse, Kennedy Sheets, Will Kelsey, Briawna Hinrichs, Karsyn Sheets, Olivia Barton, Dax Strecker, Ava Barton, Faith Haines, Korbin Haines, Mila Smith, Gatlyn Kelley, and Huxlee Kelley; many extended family members and friends.

She was born on November 1, 1929, on the farm below the Harlan County Reservoir (Republican City) to Robert Henry and Lillie Fae (Richter) Muir. She grew up in Naponee and attended District #42 country school up to the &nbsp;6th grade, and then graduated from Naponee High School with the class of 1948. Darlene then attended Kearney State College.&nbsp;After graduating college, she taught school for four years at Naponee. She was joined in marriage to Manard Kinnaman and was blessed with a daughter, Janice. She was widowed shortly after Janice’s birth.&nbsp;Darlene was united in marriage to Johnnie “John” Haines in 1953, to which two children were born: Theresa and Rickie. Darlene returned to being a full-time mother and housewife while living on the farm, north of Naponee for 14 years. In 1963, Darlene and family moved to North Platte. Darlene returned to work for North Platte School System for six years.&nbsp;In 1979, she was blessed to raise three beautiful grandchildren with a lot of good memories. Darlene had a great bond with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She loved them all very much. Darlene was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit # 364 for 69 years and the Congregational Church at Naponee.&nbsp;Darlene’s hobbies included spending time with family, canning, sewing, cooking, and baking, with dancing being her favorite. Darlene Haines (1929-2023)

Mona Faith Cooper (Robson) (92) passed away on September 12, 2023. Mona was born on June 11, 1931, in South Shields, England, to Leonard and Jennie (Bird) Robson. After departing school at the age of 14 (the required age at that time), she worked at Barwells Tyre Renewing Factory and at the Land Settlement Association in Fen Drayton.

Mona met the love of her life, Alvin, in England, in 1951 and married him in Nebraska after a five year correspondence courtship. &nbsp;She vowed to love, honor, and protect her beloved husband, Alvin, all their days in sickness and in health. Throughout their 65 years of marital bliss, she kept that promise to the end of his days and she left this world reluctantly, slipping through the veil to rest, refresh, and be reunited with those she loved who went on before her. Surely, we can picture in our minds their joyous reunion.

Aside from her love if being a devoted partner, she enjoyed sewing. In particular, she loved redressing and fixing used dolls (whereby no two dolls were alike) for charity. In Alabama, Mona belonged to the NCO Wives Club, Ceramics Club, and Commonwealth Club. &nbsp;In Uehling, she enjoyed her involvement with the Happy Hour Club and visiting the New-To-You Shoppe.

Mona was one of a kind to be sure! She was thoughtful, caring, loving, and never expressed any sadness she might have had but she was sure to advise and encourage people during their misfortunes. Anyone who knew Mona, loved her deeply for she was everyone’s aunt!

Mona is predeceased in death by her parents, her brothers, Kenneth Robson and Bernard Robson, and her husband, Alvin Cooper. Mona is survived by her sister, Noreen (Robson) Bradwell and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mona Cooper (1931-2023)

Wanda&nbsp;Jenkins, age 92 of North Platte, peacefully passed away on August 15, 2023, at David Place in David City where she had been residing.

Wanda was born in Wellfleet on December 25, 1930, to McKinley and Dena (Rucker) Goodwin. &nbsp;She grew up in Lincoln County and graduated as valedictorian of Hershey High School in 1948. &nbsp;Wanda later graduated from Kearney State College in 1971 with her BA in Education and her MA in Administration in 1981. &nbsp;She taught in many rural schools around Lincoln County and was Frontier County Superintendent of Schools from 1974-79. &nbsp;She later worked in bookkeeping for several businesses.

On December 30, 1948, Wanda married Wilber Lightfritz at Hershey. &nbsp;They had 5 children and were married for 23 years when he unexpectedly passed away in 1971. &nbsp;She married Cecil Imler at Sutherland in 1984. &nbsp;After Cecil's death in 1991, Wanda married John Jenkins at Council Groves, KS, on September 5, 1992, and they were together until his passing in 2003.

Wanda was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, R.S.V.P., and a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. &nbsp;When Wanda and John were together, they belonged to the Mission Service Corps. and traveled to Oklahoma, Arizona, Missouri, Florida, Alaska, and many places in-between. &nbsp;After his death she did mission work for the Oregon&nbsp;Trail&nbsp;Baptist Association (O.T.B.A.) for 7 years. Wanda enjoyed being a volunteer and playing music for residents at South Oak Manor. She was kind and generous with her time and talents.

Along with her husbands, Wanda was preceded in death by her infant son, Johnny Lightfritz; daughter, Shirley Szwanek; her parents, McKinley and Dena Goodwin; brothers, Lyle and Dale Goodwin; and sisters, Iola Eckhoff, Mary Russell and Cora Mae Whittaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Kay (Doug) Reznicek of Rising City, NE; sons, Michael Lightfritz of Columbus and Scott (Tammi) Lightfritz of Sidney; son-in-law, David (Mary) Szwanek of North Platte; stepchildren, David Jenkins, Tommy Jenkins and Joyce Jenkins; brother-in-law, Melvin Eckhoff of Sutherland; sister-in-law, Altene Goodwin of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Gary, Dannille, James David, Brandy, Scott, Jamie, Shelby, Shawna and Brandon; great-grandchildren, Santana, Anyssa, Tristan, Colton, Lexie, Sophia, Hazel and Autumn; great great-grandson, Zayvier; as well as many other family.

Wanda Jenkins (1930-2023)

Richard Helvey, 77, of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, Nebraska.

Richard (Dick) Dennis Helvey was born December 13, 1945, in Lexington, Nebraska, to Wilbur and Adelaide (Naviaux) Helvey. He attended North 17 grade school and graduated from St. Ann’s High School in Lexington with the class of 1964. He graduated from Kearney State College in 1968 with degrees in math and accounting and was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.&nbsp;

Dick served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as an accountant and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.&nbsp; After college, he was a bank examiner for the U.S. Treasury Department. Later he was an accomplished banker, entrepreneur, and real estate investor.&nbsp;

He married Carol Jean White from Ulysses, Nebraska on June 12, 1970, at the Kearney State College Campus Newman Center. They were the parents of Dori Anne, Jason Thaine, and Carmen Elizabeth. They raised their family in Lexington and moved to Johnson Lake in 2014. Dick and CJ both loved evenings with friends at Dance Club and playing cards. When their kids were young, many summer weekends were spent camping, canoeing and teaching the kids to water ski. They also enjoyed many trips to the mountains with friends where he spent countless hours teaching the kids to snow ski. Later, many fun days were spent teaching his eleven grandkids a variety of things from picking up sticks and branches for pennies to the importance of how to take care of vehicles and other household items.

He was incredibly involved in his community. His involvement included serving in various roles in the St. Ann’s Catholic Church parish community, Lexington Housing Authority Board of Directors, Lexington Council for Economic Development, Dawson County Veterans Service Board, Johnson Lake Area Development Board, Greater Nebraska Workforce Development Board, Sunridge Homeowners Association Board, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, as well as other community organizations.

Dick always had a trick to show, a story to tell, and a joke to make you laugh. He made the world a better place for his family, community, and the less fortunate among us. He had an innate kinship with and devotion to other victims of spinal cord injury. His life exemplified and raised the bar on overcoming adversity.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Adelaide; mother-in-law, Anita (Cordes) White; father-in-law, Morris White; younger brother, Al; brother-in-law, Con Ogden; and brother-in-law, Don White.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Jean of Johnson Lake; daughter, Dori Moomey and her husband, Travis, of Kearney; son, Dr. Jason Helvey and his wife, Sarah, of Omaha; daughter Carmen Pleskac and her husband, Steven, of Fremont; sister, Marjorie Ogden of Littleton, CO; and his grandchildren: Hallett and his wife, Sophie Moomey, Phillip Moomey, Jillian Moomey, Camille Moomey, Marigold Helvey, Marley Helvey, Wesley Pleskac, Lucia Pleskac, Jaxon Pleskac, Derek Pleskac, and Rosalie Pleskac.&nbsp; He is also survived by a niece, Laurie; nephew, Brett; aunt, Sr. Mary Helena Naviaux; and many other dear relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington with Father Jose Chavez officiating. Mass will be live - streamed via the Reynolds-Love Funeral Facebook page.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with a Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m.
