Judy Ann McGuire  (1943-2023)

Dorothy Joan Woodside, age 90, of Kearney, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on April 12 1933 in Duluth, Minnesota to Charles and Marguerite (Lains) Olds.&nbsp; She graduated from Duluth Central High School with the Class of 1951.&nbsp; She then moved on the Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota where she received her bachelor's degree in Christian Education and Psychology.&nbsp; In 1955, Dorothy moved to Lexington, Nebraska where she met the love of her life, Jimmy Woodside.&nbsp; The two were united in marriage on October 12, 1958 in Lexington, Nebraska.

Dorothy was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church.&nbsp; It was here that she found solace and purpose.&nbsp; She also served as the Director of Christian Education for four years.&nbsp; &nbsp; In this role, she displayed unwavering dedication to nurturing the spiritual growth of the congregation she cared so deeply about.

Throughout the&nbsp; years, she also served as an elder and member of the Pastoral Nominating Committee, taught Sunday School and various Bible Studies, offering her time and talents selflessly.

She was an active member of the Lexington Women's Association and Martha Circle.&nbsp; Dorothy was also a proud member of PEO, a collective striving to provide educational opportunities for women.&nbsp; Her involvement in this organization showcased her commitment to empowering other and making a positive difference in society.

Dorothy dedicated 20 years of service to the travel industry where she employed her expertise to create memorable experiences for countless individuals.&nbsp; Following this fulfilling chapter of her life, Dorothy transitioned into working in a tax office for four years.&nbsp; Her eye for detail and problem-solving skills were invaluable during this time.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Charles (Linda) Woodside of Kearney, Nebraska, David (Michelle) Woodside of The Woodlands, Texas, Linda Barton of Kearney, Nebraska, and Barbara Hedrick of The Woodlands, Texas; brother-in-law, Karl Anuta of Boulder, Colorado; grandchildren, Jerrod (Kayla) Barton, Justin (Melissa) Barton, Kathryn (Aaron) Peterson, Alexander (Emily) Woodside, Owen Woodside, and Harry Woodside; as well as 4 great-grandchildren and extended family and friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Woodside; a sister, Barbara Anuta; and son-in-law, J. Larry Hedrick.

There will be no visitation, as the family is honoring Dorothy's wish of cremation.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Nebraska.

(Counce) Beezley.&nbsp; She died on August 28, 2023 after a brief illness. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Joan grew up in La Mesa, California, graduating from Helix High in 1964.&nbsp; In 1965, she graduated from James Hall College of Beauty and married Wayne W. Herald.&nbsp; They had two sons, Nicholas in 1974 and John in 1975.&nbsp; Joan and the boys moved to Hayes Center, Nebraska in November 1979.&nbsp; In 1981, she married Lawrence W. Lauenroth.&nbsp; They had a daughter, Jill, in 1982. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Joan served as the Hayes County Clerk for many years.&nbsp; She also served on several committees, including the Hayes Center Cemetery, Senior Center and Library. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She is preceded in death by parents, Robert C. and Lillian E. Beezley; husband, Lawrence W. Lauenroth;&nbsp; son, Nicholas B. Herald; and brother-in-law, George H. Miller. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Joan is survived by son,&nbsp; John R. Joan Elizabeth Lauenroth  (1946-2023)

Bonnie Jo (Keck) Tilford, age 76, joined her Heavenly Lord on August 25, 2023; as Heaven has gained a beautiful Angel. Bonnie was born Nov 16, 1946 in Columbus, NE to Wm C. Keck Sr and Shirley Blair Keck. The family moved to Grand Island, NE in 1959.

Bonnie could hunt a deer like no other. She was excellent at crocheting and knitting as she made all her nieces and nephews hats and gloves. Bonnie was also a Ham/CB Radio enthusiast.

Upon moving to North Platte, Bonnie ran the Stanford Inn Motel, she ran her own upholstery shop, where her work was beautiful and detailed.&nbsp; She also worked for the Unites States Post Office, was the deli manager at U-Save on Francis Street and after retiring, she became a CNA caring for the elderly in their homes.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Wm C. Keck Sr and Shirley A. Keck; two children, Tier and Billy; brothers, Edward T. Keck, Bill Keck Jr (Butch); great nieces, nephew, aunts, uncles and ex-husband, Jim Tilford.

Those left to cherish and celebrate her memory are her beloved dog, Little Girl; son Jeremy and daughter Kate (Chris); grandson Zemory; brothers and sisters: Allan Keck of Grand Island, NE, Steve Keck (Cindy), Kathy Keck Buck, Kevin Keck (Alice), Kenny Keck (Teresa), Dorothy Keck Savory (Hubert), all of North Platte, NE, Richard Keck of Kearney, NE; Uncle Bon Blair of Grand Island, NE; Aunts Joy Robertson of Grand Island, NE and Patty Knutson of Omaha, NE; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Russell D Banzhaf, age 66, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at Bryan West in Lincoln, NE. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandpa to his three grandsons who meant the world to him. &nbsp; He was born May 6, 1957, in McCook, NE to Darrel and Lucile (Harris) Banzhaf. &nbsp;He grew up in Cambridge, NE, with three sisters and graduated from Maywood High School in 1975. &nbsp;He met the love of his life, Dorris (Eubanks) Banzhaf, they were married February 20, 1976, and celebrated 47 years of marriage. &nbsp;To this union, two children were born: Dustin Wade and Lacey Renee. &nbsp;They raised their family in Indianola, NE and moved to McCook, NE in 2001. &nbsp;To not miss out on watching their grandsons grow, they moved to Lincoln, NE in 2017. &nbsp;He spent time farming with his grandpa and in 1976 was employed at Electric Hose and Rubber/Parker-Hannifan until he retired in 2014. &nbsp;Russ always thought his life was blessed with many roads traveled, a loving family, a warm home, and cherished friendships.&nbsp; Russ had a passion for everything outdoors. &nbsp;He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed camping and kayaking, and loved instilling those skills upon others. &nbsp;He helped create the Republican Valley Bowhunter’s Archery Club. &nbsp;He was an instructor for Hunter Safety where he taught youth the safety of the sport. &nbsp;He completed a master naturalist course so that he could volunteer at Nebraska Game and Parks events, allowing him to share his love of these skills. &nbsp;He spent many years donating blood/platelets to the Red Cross earning many awards for his contributions to help others. &nbsp;He was passionate about his Huskers and Denver Broncos, and he took joy in watching his grandson’s baseball games and band activities.&nbsp;

Preceding him in death is his sister, Linda Banzhaf; grandparents, Paul (Velma) Banzhaf, Claude (Lottie) Harris; in-laws, Bob (Shirley) Eubanks. &nbsp;Russ is survived by his wife, Dorris; son, Dustin; daughter, Lacey (Levi)Davis; and three amazing grandsons, Hunter, Brycen, and Wyatt; parents, Darrel and Lucile Banzhaf; sisters, Kathy Banzhaf, Gloria (Brad) Masoner; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in- laws. He is also survived by the second love of his life and dog, Ivy. &nbsp;Russ knows that he is loved, had been loved, and will be deeply missed. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Russell D. Banzhaf (1957-2023)

Estella Fay Ann (Ridpath) Shedd passed away at the Hillcrest Care Center in McCook on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at the age of 89.&nbsp; She was born in Cambridge on March 30, 1934, to Leon and Berniece (Higgins) Ridpath.&nbsp; Fay Ann attended and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1952.&nbsp;&nbsp;She moved to Colorado where she attended and graduated from the Colorado Women’s College with a degree in Library Science.

Fay Ann was wed to John Robert Davis in September of 1955. To this union four children were born: Diana, Rhonda, Robert Scott, and Larry.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family moved to Cambridge where Fay Ann was employed by Rodney Phillips at the bank, Merl’s Café, and Cambridge Memorial Hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

In 1984, she met Gary Shedd near Edgewater, CO while working at a Nursing Home in Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp;The couple moved to Indianola, NE while Fay Ann was employed at Hillcrest Nursing Home, McCook, NE. The couple was wed in August of 1994. Gary preceded her in 1998.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Fay Ann moved to Kenesaw, NE to be near family.&nbsp;&nbsp;She worked at the Nursing Home in Kenesaw, before retiring and moving back to Cambridge.

Fay Ann enjoyed going to meals at the Cambridge Senor Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even when her health deteriorated, she made the trek from her apartment at Parkside Manor to eat and socialize.

Fay Ann was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; son, Robert Scott Davis; infant daughter, Diana Davis; brothers, Jim Ridpath, William (Marge) Ridpath.

Fay Ann is survived by her daughter, Rhonda (Carl)&nbsp;Hellner&nbsp;of Kenesaw, NE; son, Larry (Lajuana) Davis of McCook, NE; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

 </figure>Estella Fay Ann (Ridpath) Shedd passed away at the Hillcrest Care Center in McCook on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at the age of 89.&nbsp; She was born in Cambridge on March 30, 1934, to Leon and Berniece (Higgins) Ridpath.&nbsp; Fay Ann attended and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1952.&nbsp;&nbsp;She moved to Colorado where she attended and graduated from the Colorado Women’s College with a degree in Library Science.Fay Ann was wed to John Robert Davis in September of 1955. To this union four children were born: Diana, Rhonda, Robert Scott, and Larry.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family moved to Cambridge where Fay Ann was employed by Rodney Phillips at the bank, Merl’s Café, and Cambridge Memorial Hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistant.In 1984, she met Gary Shedd near Edgewater, CO while working at a Nursing Home in Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp;The couple moved to Indianola, NE while Fay Ann was employed at Hillcrest Nursing Home, McCook, NE. The couple was wed in August of 1994. Helen “Gaylene” Grint, age 87, of Sargent, NE passed away August 25, 2023, at the Brookestone View in Broken Bow.

Graveside services will be Friday, September 1, 2023, at 11:00 am at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Sargent, NE with Reverend Don Schauda officiating. Memorials are suggested to Donor's Choice. Helen Gaylene Martin Grint was born August 3, 1936, in Pawnee City, Nebraska. She was the third child born to Fred Cleland Martin and Verna Vere Walker Martin. She completed elementary school at Table Rock City Schools. Later she moved in with her older sister Leila to Omaha and completed High School at Omaha Public Schools in 1954.

She married her Husband of 67 years Dale Eugene Grint on February 19, 1955, in Lincoln, Nebraska. At that time, she was employed at the Elgin Watch factory and Dale at a service station. To this union two children were born: Jerald Eugene and Debra Jo. They made their home in Havelock in Lincoln until 1967 when they moved the family to Dale's hometown of Sargent, Nebraska.

Gaylene was a "Stay at Home" Mom and took on the challenge of farm life. She enjoyed homemaking, helping with farm chores, and always made sure there was a very good meal on the table come Lunch or Supper time. Later in life she decided she should get a driver's license, so she did. She then could attend the kids' activities and run errands.

Outside of the home she was the bookkeeper at Dale's business Grint Farm Supply for many years. She was also employed at the Sargent Sale Barn. She volunteered her help for several local Bloodmobiles and worked at many Comstock elections.

She enjoyed attending Extension Club lunches, playing card and board games, cake decorating, cooking, camping, fishing, gardening, and being "Grandma". She and Dale enjoyed Country music, dancing, and traveling to many farm auctions all over the country. They also enjoyed going to the casino occasionally to test their luck. Her favorite thing of all was spending time with family.

In 2017, her health began to decline, and she began living at Brookstone View Nursing Home in Broken Bow, NE. She made many new friends there and kept busy most days crocheting, doing jigsaw puzzles, coloring, and helping with various craft projects. The nurses and staff referred to her as "A Gem" and "One of the Good Ones".

Gaylene is survived by her only brother Fred C. "Sonny" Martin and his wife Rosemary Martin of Lincoln, her children Jerry Grint and Debra Chanady of Sargent, son in law Luis Chanady Jr, grandchildren Louis Chanady IV of Sargent &amp; Tracie Chanady of Sycamore, Illinois, Nicole Wetgen, Kayla Gehring, Great Grand Children Trevor, Brooke, and Colton Wetgen. Brother and sister in laws and many nieces and nephews.

Gaylene is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dale, two older sisters Leila Sedam and Irene Hansel, several brothers and sisters-in-law and friends.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Marianne Margaret Straka, 80, of Grand Island, Nebraska, formerly of Lexington passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Emerald Lakeview Nursing and Rehab in Grand Island.

She was born on April 4, 1943 in Lexington, Nebraska to Louis and Agnes (Benhauer) Straka. Marianne attended country school at District 56 and 7 in Lexington and graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1961.

Marianne gained employment with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in August of 1961. In 1964, when the Lexington offices closed, she transferred to the Grand Island location. Marianne worked for the telephone company for 35 years, retiring in 1999.

She enjoyed emailing, friendships and going out to eat. She always had a good sense of humor and a smile.

Thanks goes to her great neighbors, Hugo, Melisa, Max, Monica and Xavier Mendez, Linda Graybill and Ilene Ivers for their support during her cancer journey.

Marianne is survived by her brother, Tom Straka of Lexington, also relatives and friends.

Marianne Margaret Straka (1943-2023)

Willa Mae (Wagner) Hawinkson passed away Monday, August 28, 2023 at the age of 90 in McCook, NE.

Willa Mae was born July 10, 1933, in Culbertson, Nebraska, the daughter of William Wagner and Clara (Wacker) Wagner. She lived on a farm until the age of 11 when the family moved into the village of Culbertson.&nbsp; The family also included brothers, Billy Jr., Jerry Lee and sister Elizabeth.

Her education was at the Culbertson public schools, where she graduated at the age of 16.&nbsp; She attended Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska where she studied secretarial courses for one year.&nbsp; Most of her adult life she was employed as a secretary. She worked in the law office of Morrison &amp; Grover and the Bureau of Reclamation, both in McCook and the Social Security Administration in Scottsbluff.&nbsp; In Trenton, she worked at the Farmer’s Co-op, for attorney Jack H. Hendrix, and for the County of Hitchcock in the County Clerk’s office for 24 years.

Willa Mae and Arthur Hawkinson were married in Culbertson on April 17, 1955.&nbsp; Most of their married life they lived in the community of Stratton.&nbsp; Their children are Dianne Michelle Shafer, and Curtis Ray Hawkinson.&nbsp; Chris Reid, who is like a son to them, is also part of their family. Willa Mae’s father, William, lived with them for several years.

Willa Mae was active in many activities in the community including the Woman’s Club, Buzzin Dozen Extension Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She served in several offices in those organizations.&nbsp; She was involved in community fund drives and served on the election board and the Community Improvement group.&nbsp; She was also part of a birthday group and card club.

Willa Mae became a member of the Culbertson Evangelical United Brethren Church on March 30, 1947, and transferred her membership to The Community United Methodist Church in Stratton on October 30, 1960.&nbsp; This church was a big part of her life. She served as Chairperson of the Board, Sunday School Superintendent, financial secretary, and on many committees.&nbsp; She also sang in the choir and served as a delegate two years to the annual conference.

Willa Mae and Art enjoyed working and traveling together.&nbsp; They traveled to 49 states and to Mexico, Canada, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.&nbsp; They also enjoyed square dancing, boating, and water skiing. In later years they enjoyed long trips in their travel trailer.&nbsp; They lived in Culbertson, Pueblo, CO, McCook, Gering, Stratton, and Grove, OK.&nbsp; Her marriage, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren brought much joy to her life.

Willa Mae was preceded in death by her parents Clara in 1954 and William in 1983 and brothers Billy Junior in 1928 and Jerry Lee in 1935, as well as daughter in law Kathy Reid.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband Art Hawkinson of McCook, NE, children Dianne Shafer and husband Rick of McCook, NE, Curtis Hawkinson and partner Sheila Schmidt of Wilsonville, OR, and Chris Reid of McCook, NE, her sister Elizabeth Kisner of Kimberling City, MO, grandchildren Bryan Shafer and wife Alicia of Garden City, KS, Todd Shafer and wife Deidre of McCook, NE, Dr. Lila Hawkinson of Portland, OR, and Vivian Hawkinson of New Haven, CT.&nbsp; She is also survived by 9 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Willa Mae Hawkinson (1933-2023)

Darwin Elmer Ransom, age 95, passed away peacefully at Sentara Hospital in Woodbridge, Va. on August 22nd, with his family by his side. He was born June 27, 1928, in Stratton, Neb., and was the son of the late Elmer and Ruth (Craw) Ransom. He grew up on a nearly 1500-acre farm that straddled two counties and two time zones in southwest Nebraska, making last minute trips to the hardware store at 4:59 p.m. very interesting. Darwin graduated from Stratton High School in Stratton, NE. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and served in Japan and the Philippines, training as a heavy equipment mechanic, building on his experience on the farm fixing tractors. In 1948, he enrolled at the University of Nebraska at the main campus in Lincoln and earned a BS degree in Agriculture. Darwin spent time flying planes with friends and met the love of his life, Roseanel VanStrom. Rosie was a city girl from Lincoln studying education at the University of Nebraska. The two were married in Lincoln in 1954 and began 54 years of marriage together.

Darwin began his professional career as a County Agricultural Extension Agent in Hayes County, Neb., supporting 4-H clubs, writing soil test and seed certification recommendations, and working with farmers. This initial work experience led to a 40-year career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), taking him and his family across the country from Lincoln, Nebraska to Seattle, Washington, to Richmond, Virginia, and ultimately to Washington, D.C., where he and Rosie raised their family in the D.C. suburb of Dale City, Va. At USDA in Washington, Darwin became a renowned figure as the sugar expert at the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

While Darwin loved math and statistics, his natural inclination toward helping people emerged after his retirement from federal service when he began a lengthy career in real estate. He also manifested his interest in public service with his participation in the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) through which he made some of his most lasting friendships.

Darwin also got the travel bug after retirement, joining NARFE friends at meetings around the country and traveling with family and friends to Alaska, Maine, and Florida.

Darwin was a faithful member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Dale City, Va. for 48 years. Darwin is preceded in death by his wife, Roseanel (VanStrom) Ransom. Survivors include sons, Roger Ransom and wife, Rhonda of Lebanon Church, Va., Elmer Ransom and wife, Catharine of Arlington, Va.; daughters, Nancy Ransom of Woodbridge, Va., Laura Ransom and husband, Kevin McGrath of Lincoln, Neb.; and six grandchildren, Nicole, Joshua, Hannah, Donna, Connor and Cole.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 31st from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Boulevard, Dale City, Va., 22193. (Note: there is another Mountcastle location in Woodbridge, this event is at the Dale City location, please confirm the address before driving.) A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 2 at 10:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 14999 Birchdale Ave., Dale City, Va. 22193. The family will gather again to receive friends at a visitation on Saturday, September 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. (MDT) at Benkelman Memorial Chapel in Benkelman, NE. This initial work experience led to a 40-year career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), taking him and his family across the country from Lincoln, Nebraska to Seattle, Washington, to Richmond, Virginia, and ultimately to Washington, D.C., where he and Rosie raised their family in the D.C. suburb of Dale City, Va. At USDA in Washington, Darwin became a renowned figure as the sugar expert at the National Agricultural Statistics Service.While Darwin loved math and statistics, his natural inclination toward helping people emerged after his retirement from federal service when he began a lengthy career in real estate. He also manifested his interest in public service with his participation in the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) through which he made some of his most lasting friendships.Darwin also got the travel bug after retirement, joining NARFE friends at meetings around the country and traveling with family and friends to Alaska, Maine, and Florida.Darwin was a faithful member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Dale City, Va. for 48 years. Darwin is preceded in death by his wife, Roseanel (VanStrom) Ransom. Survivors include sons, Roger Ransom and wife, Rhonda of Lebanon Church, Va., Elmer Ransom and wife, Catharine of Arlington, Va.; daughters, Nancy Ransom of Woodbridge, Va., Laura Ransom and husband, Kevin McGrath of Lincoln, Neb.; and six grandchildren, Nicole, Joshua, Hannah, Donna, Connor and Cole.Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 31st from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Boulevard, Dale City, Va., 22193. Darwin E. Ransom (198-2023)

Stephen Scott Lauer, age 70, of Brule, NE passed away on August 25, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends.

Steve was born on March 15, 1953, in Gothenburg, Nebraska, to Robert William and Jeanette Griffith Lauer. He grew up on a farm northeast of Cozad, where he graduated from Cozad High School in 1971. He joined the rodeo team at UNL, where he graduated with a degree in Animal Science.

After college, Steve moved to the Brule area, where he first worked at the McGinley-Shultz feedlot. Then, he went to work for Wayne Frates until 1985, when the family sold the farm. During this time, Steve acquired his own herd of cattle and started his own custom haying business, Twin Valley Commodities, along with his pilot's license, with the help of Darrel Munson.

Steve married Donna (Reichenberg) Henson in October 1986; they were blessed with two children: Scott Wesley and Jessica Lynn Lauer.

In the Fall of 2017, Steve married Karen Mostrom, and they made their home east of Brule.

Steve, being a true cowboy at heart, much preferred horses over wheels. He loved his family and his work. He was overjoyed when he got to share his passion for cowboying with his kids. From teaching them to rope or helping them with 4-H, Steve's face shined with pride when he got to pass along his love and knowledge to young ones. And if there was a dance within a 100-mile radius, Steve was there with his daughter Jess, and if she wasn't there, the ladies would line up to catch a dance with him!

Somebody once said that a cowboy's journey isn't marked by the dust he left behind but rather the trials he blazed and the tales he left in the hearts of those who rode alongside him. May he forever ride the trails of Heaven with the wind at his back and God's light shining upon his face.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Scott.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Lauer of Brule; daughter, Jessie Lauer of Brule; grandson, Jaxson Scott Lauer; siblings, Dan (Teresa) Lauer of Norton, KS, Sherri (Garon) Stewart of Ogallala, NE, Terri (Brian) Commins of Ogallala, NE, Angie (Steve) Mueting of Aurora, CO; along with many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Susan Carr, “Sue” or “Susie”, a beloved resident of North Platte, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2023. Born on March 31, 1954, in North Platte, Susan's life was filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering dedication to her family and friends.

With a deep sense of pride for her hometown, Sue attended and graduated from high school in Maywood. Her formative years were spent in and around Maywood, where she developed lasting friendships and cherished memories. Later on, she made the decision to move to North Platte, where she would spend the remainder of her years.

Some of Sue’s greatest joys in life were spending time with her family. Taking country road drives with sister Teri, visiting sister Jan at her house and especially spending time with her grandchildren, Landyn and Easton. Whether it was embarking on delightful adventures together or simply enjoying quiet moments at home, she treasured every second she shared with them. Sue’s love for family knew no bounds; she held a special place in her heart for all her loved ones. Her warm smile and infectious laugh brightened the lives of everyone she encountered.

Known for her compassionate nature and playful spirit, Sue had an extraordinary ability to make people laugh. Her quick wit and humorous anecdotes brought endless joy to those around her.&nbsp;

Sue’s unwavering love extended beyond her immediate family as well. She never knew a stranger; instead, everyone she met became an instant friend. Her kind heart and welcoming nature made others feel seen and valued. Those who had the privilege of knowing Sue will forever remember her genuine warmth and the lasting impact she made on their lives.

Sue is survived by countless friends and family, including her loving daughter, Amanda (Ricky) Gilmore and her two grandsons- Landyn and Easton, who were the light of her life. Their bond was unbreakable and Sue’s love for them knew no bounds. Additionally, she leaves behind sister, Teri (Bill) Kleinow and family and sister Janice (Dave) Kreis and family. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Nancy “Sue” Kerr, 73 years of age, of Oxford, Nebraska, passed away, on August 27, 2023, at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Nebraska. Sue was born in Oxford, on June 15, 1950, the fifth of six children, born to Melvin and Lois (Abraham) Bard. She received her education from Edison Public Schools.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;On April 21, 1967, Sue was united in marriage to Jimmy Kerr in Beaver City, Nebraska, and to this union four children were born: Stephanie, Connie, Neil, and Angie. The couple made their home in Oxford.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Sue was a devoted mother and grandmother. &nbsp;She loved running her in-home daycare for over 30 years. &nbsp;She loved those kids and their families. &nbsp;Sue enjoyed volunteering at the Oxford Thrift Store, the Granada Theater and with Meals-on-Wheels. &nbsp;Sue had a generous heart.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Sue enjoyed playing cards and was an excellent cook and laundry queen! &nbsp;She enjoyed watching all of her grandchildren’s activities. &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Sue was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Ramon Dawson.

Nancy "Sue" Kerr (1950-2023)

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Kristi Helen Schlegel, age 68, went to be with her Lord on January 18, 2023 in Aiken, South Carolina where she had been living since 1995.

&nbsp; &nbsp; She was born October 28, 1954 to Darold and Marjorie (Covert) Schlegel in McCook, Nebraska. &nbsp;Kristi was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Culbertson, Nebraska. &nbsp;She was raised on the family farm in rural Hitchcock County, Nebraska where she was a 4-H member showing her horses, Snip and Mitzi and registered Shorthorn cattle. &nbsp;Her involvement in the Nebraska Shorthorn Association culminated in her being named the Shorthorn Lassie Queen. &nbsp;Kristi was a talented artist, focusing on drawing horses, and hand tooled leather work.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Kristi graduated from McCook Senior High School in 1973. &nbsp;She continued her education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln receiving her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education and Master of Science degree in Education and Family Resources. &nbsp;While a student at UNL, Kristi was a member of the Cornhusker marching band and flag corp. &nbsp;She also was a member and served as president of her sorority Epsilon Sigma Phi.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Employment with Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service brought her to Aiken, South Carolina in 1995 where she was the 4-H Youth Development Senior Associate County Agent. &nbsp;She enjoyed working with young people and developed the “Horseless Horse Club” to provide children an opportunity to learn about horses. &nbsp;Her last employment was will ACTS (Area Churches Together Serving) as an office clerk.

&nbsp; &nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Douglas Schlegel; and grandparents, Floyd and Doris (Jennings) Covert and Willard and Helen (Nelson) Schlegel.

Lora, fondly known as Lori, was born June 13, 1961, in Lincoln to Wayne and JoAnn Ficke. &nbsp;She was Baptized and Confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pleasant Dale. &nbsp;Lori graduated from Milford High School in 1979 and enrolled at Kearney State College. &nbsp;Her hobbies as a young woman included playing the piano, organ, softball, basketball (where she lettered), and attending vacation bible school and Sunday school.

In 1982, while living in Pleasant Dale, she met the love of her life Scott and they married on April 22, 1983, in Pleasant Dale. While in Pleasant Dale, Lori served on the planning committee for the Pleasant Dale Centennial Celebration, helped plan the Centennial History book, and helped paint a mural on the side of Rudy &amp; Marlene’s bar.

Lori and Scott moved to Kansas in 1983 and had three children: Ryan, Heather, and Kristin. Lori began working for the United States Postal Service in 1985 and continued there for 37 years, until she retired in 2023. They moved to Fremont in 1993 where they spent their time boating, camping, gardening, and with family and friends.

In 2011, Lori and Scott acquired a permanent camping spot on the Platte River where her camping friends became family. &nbsp;Lori’s more recent hobbies were camping (she was especially fond of upgrading from a tent as a young woman to a fifth wheel), geocaching, airboating, feeding her wildlife critters, and spending time with her family. &nbsp;Lori was a big lover of all animals, especially her 3 cats at home, Kai, Peka, and Stumpy.

Lori is survived by her parents Wayne and JoAnn Ficke; husband Scott Doty; son Ryan (Jen) Doty; daughter Kristin Doty; grandsons Grayson and Gavin Doty; siblings Jeff (Barb) Ficke, Jerry (Cindy) Ficke, Amanda (Ryan) Forry, Brian (Angel) Ficke, Tracy (Betty) Ficke, Andy Ficke, Angie Ficke, Daniel Ficke and fiancé Danielle, Jordan Ficke, Lynne Ficke, Joni Ficke; sister and brothers-in-law, Susan Doty, Pat (Linda) Doty, Bruce (Marge) Koefoot; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, feline kids, grand pups and grand kitties.

Lori is preceded in death by her daughter Heather Doty; grandparents Adeline and Earl Lohmeier, Laura and Henry Ficke; parents-in-law William and Mary Doty; sister and brother-in-law Julie Koefoot and Mark Doty; aunts Wendy Lohmeier and Jean Schultz; cousins Russ Riley, Mike Ficke, Gene Ficke; and nephew Johnny Sullivan.

Visitation will be held at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow on Thursday, August 31st at 12:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held after visitation starting at 2:00 PM. &nbsp;Graveside services will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery immediately following the service.

Lori Doty (1961-2023)

Doris Mae Hickman Gill, first-born child of Lillian Mae Roseberry and Paul Jones Hickman was born January 8, 1924, at the C.G. Roseberry home on South G Street in Broken Bow, NE.

She and her parents lived on a farm near Litchfield where she attended grade school, moving to Custer County when she was a 3rd grader and attended Elton and Tappan Valley Schools near Broken Bow. &nbsp;Doris attended high school for two years at Broken Bow before moving to a farm near Sargent where she graduated in 1942. &nbsp;She worked in Reiers Department store in Sargent until her father was hospitalized for several months and she went home to care for the livestock, as her brother and sister were attending high school in Sargent.

Doris and John were married October 3, 1943, in Broken Bow and lived on the Gill farm in Somerford Valley southwest of Sargent 80 years, where she passed on August 19th, 2023, after fighting hard against CHF, Congestive Heart Failure.

Doris and John worked together on their small farm while raising three daughters. Doris helped at the Spinning Wheel store in Sargent for several years, worked with 4-H members, sponsored many band trips, and was a news correspondent for the Sargent Leader and Custer County Chief for 74 years. &nbsp;When asked what was the biggest change she lived through, she would quickly respond “electricity.”

Doris loved sewing clothes for her family, quilting, and crafts, cooking and gardening. &nbsp;She shared many meals, baked goods, and fresh garden produce with neighbors and friends. Several of her recipes have been published locally and nationally. &nbsp;She loved visiting, especially with the little kids and was always willing to lend a helping hand. &nbsp;There is so much more that can be said about her 99 years of life.

Doris loved her family very much and was always happy to be included in all their activities and achievements. &nbsp;Survivors are her daughters: Jean Marie Holoun (Eugene) of Berthoud, CO, Jane Ann Lang (Jim Wallace) of Lexington, NE and Julie Mae Kemp (Monte) of Sargent NE. &nbsp;Grandsons Terry Holoun (Whitney) of Aurora, CO, T.J. Holoun (Sue) of Loveland, CO, Gavin Kemp (Caitlynn) of Sargent, NE and Justin Kemp of Peoria, IL, nieces and nephews, cousins and many, many friends and neighbors.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, a baby brother Lynn Byron Hickman, brother Eugene Lewis Hickman and sister Glenna Mary Spanel Abbott.

Memorials are suggested to the Friends of the Sargent Library, Backpack Program at the Sargent School or to the donor’s choice.

A Memorial service will be held at the Weissert Church, 80298 South Weissert Road, Ansley NE 68814, just seven miles south of the family farm, on Saturday, September 2nd at 10:00 am. &nbsp;Cookies and coffee will be served following the service in the church basement.

Doris Gill (1924-2023)

Richard L. “Rich” Richards of Cozad passed away Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Great Plains Hospital in North Platte at the age of 76. Richard was born May 19, 1947 in Lexington, Nebraska to Richard R. “Dick” and Mary Ella (Keller) Richards. He was the third of four children. After attending Cozad Schools, he began working alongside his dad at Paulsen, Inc. Richard spent his life in the Cozad area and worked many jobs including a meat packing plant, hay mills, washing trucks for Hood and Sons, and again at Paulsen, Inc. where he later retired.

Richard was a friend to everyone. He loved gathering together with family and friends for holidays, birthdays, and barbeques. He especially enjoyed socializing, drinking beer and eating bull fries on special occasions. Richard spent his free time working on the farm fixing tractors, cars, planting a garden and raising animals. Richard was generous to a fault and would do anything for his family and friends.

Richard had a few special women he cared for in his younger years, but never married or had any biological children. He, however, was blessed with a group of children he cared for like they were his own.&nbsp;

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bob Richards, Bonnie Semler and William “Bill” Richards; best friend and brother by choice, William “Bill” Kostman Sr.; child by choice, William “Tuffy” Kostman Jr.; niece, Willa Mae Kostman Yeutter and nephew Willy Richards.

Richard is survived by his children by choice, Billie (Tim) Land of Cozad, Bobbie (Moy) Samayoa of Lexington, Angel Poore of Kearney, Anina Kostman (Trevor Yeutter), Luke Kostman (Heather Wilson), and Kent Kostman, all of Cozad; sister in law, Norma Richards of Cozad; and many nieces, nephews, and his beloved fur baby, Tiny.

Richard LeRoy Richards (1947-2023)

LuAnna June Plymell was born August 20, 1933 in Wellfleet, Nebraska to Merle Plymell &amp; Gladys (Conklin) Plymell. She grew up and graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1950. She married Lawrence Shill on December 6, 1952. To this union 3 children were born: Christine Marie, Ivan Eugene &amp; Katherine Irene. They lived in North Platte, NE until moving to Elsie, NE in 1970, where they lived until Lawrence’s passing in 1989.

LuAnna moved to Imperial, NE and drove a school bus for 25 years. She loved being a school bus driver with the “extra children” she had throughout the years. To this day, many would stop LuAnna to give her a hug.

She never knew a stranger and could talk your leg off! She married Harold Schneider on February 12, 2000 and lived in Cozad, NE until his death on February 8, 2013. She returned to Imperial,NE in April of 2014 and renewed several old friendships and made new ones as well. LuAnna was proud to have made it to her 90th Birthday.

LuAnna found her way to heaven early morning August 27th, 2023 in Imperial, NE.

LuAnna is survived by her daughter, Christine (Donnie) Schilke of Imperial, NE, Kathy Johnstone of Pear Valley, TX and her son, Ivan (Brenda) Shill of Gothenburg, NE; one sister, Wanda Faimonof Kearney, NE; 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, numerous cousins and many friends. She will be sadly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and son-in-law, Ernie Johnstone.

Carl Elliott, 85, of Sidney, passed away Wednesday evening, August 23, 2023 in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Carl Russell Elliott was born April 6, 1938, to Earl F. and Louse M. (Hoﬀman) Elliott&nbsp; in Monticello, Minnesota.&nbsp; Carl was the 10th of 12 children.&nbsp; At the tender age of 5, Carl’s mother died, and he and his twin sister, Carol, older sister, Mary, and younger sister, Sharon, were sent to the St Cloud Catholic Orphanage in St Cloud, Minnesota. He and his sisters would spend the next several years in and out of the orphanage until Carl and Carol went to live with their oldest sister, June, in California, at the age of 13.&nbsp; Carl completed High School in California and then joined the Air Force in 1956.

While in the service he was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota where he met and married Betty Jean Frazee June 5th, 1960.&nbsp; They began their family in 1961 and have been joined by 5 children: Doug, Cindy, Amy, David and Jennifer.&nbsp; After his discharge he and Betty moved to Aurora, CO where he worked with the Air National Guard at Buckley Air Force Base.&nbsp; Then moved to Longmont for a short time to work as an Air Traffic Controller at the newly built FAA there.&nbsp;

In 1964, he began his career with IBM in Boulder, Colorado as a Drafting Engineer. He was ﬂown to New York for 3 months of training.&nbsp; While there he attended the 1964 World Fair.&nbsp; While at IBM, Carl was instrumental in the development of the CATIA program, that is still in use in various forms today.&nbsp; He continued this career until 1985 when he was able to retire.&nbsp; In 1994 he moved his family to Sidney, Nebraska, and has spent his retirement helping and serving so many friends and family in many ways from yard work, fixing just about anything, and working on cars.

Carl loved fishing, nature, hiking and camping, especially in the Rocky Mountains. He would often take Betty and the kids to Carter Lake. He was one of the ﬁrst to ﬁsh the newly constructed Dillon Reservoir in the summer of 1963, when he took a very pregnant Betty up and down the hills trying to ﬁnd the perfect ﬁshing spot.&nbsp; Carl also loved animals and along with his children had various pets over the years.&nbsp; But he never did get that Monkey for Jenny. He also would go out of his way to make the children around him happy.&nbsp; He could often be found mowing mazes in the tall grass of his acreage or towing a wagon full of little ones behind the riding mower.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Sidney; children, Doug Elliott of Longmont, Colorado, Cindy and husband, Ben Sarsozo of Centennial, Colorado; Amy McManis of Ashland, Nebraska, David and his wife, Amie Elliott of Del City, Oklahoma, and Jennifer Elliott of Sidney; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; twin sister, Carol Rose Wilson of Klamath Falls, Oregon; grand-dog, Lucy; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings.

Leland “Lee” Dale DeGroff, age 85, of Brewster, NE passed away August 24, 2023, at his home in Brewster.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at 11:00 am at the Brewster Cemetery in Brewster, NE. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Brewster Fire &amp; Rescue. Leland, fondly known as Lee, was born to Gerald and Jane DeGroff on March 31st, 1938, in Burwell, Nebraska. He married the love of his life, Beverly Dimmit, on June 12th, 1960. They raised four children together: Debra, Rhonda, Craig, and Ryan.

He was raised in southwest Holt County, NE in the Sandhills, nine miles west of Swan Lake, on a ranch. He attended high school at Burwell, participating in football, boxing, and long-distance track.

In 1962, the Holt County ranch was traded for the 10,000-acre Ericson Ranch northwest of Brewster, Nebraska. They drove 500 cows and calves across the sandhills. It took six days to get there, going through ranch after ranch for miles and sleeping under the stars.

He was widely recognized as one of the first to stock a large inventory of hale trailers, and ranchers came from all over. As the stock trailers were new to ranch country, he spent much time repairing and wiring brakes and lights.

He soon purchased a golden palomino stallion named “Skips Count.” “Skip” was his prized possession, and he bred hundreds of colts, also taking in outside mares.

One of his favorite pastimes was coyote hunting with greyhounds. In the early days, he piloted the airplane, searching for stray coyotes in the sky. He also piloted around the ranch, checking the cattle’s water.Three Bars was his Ranch Rodeo Team, with Craig DeGroff, Ryan DeGroff, Rex Spanel, Punch Howard, and Dale Pricket. Their team participated in the National Finals Ranch Rodeo in Fort Worth, Texas in 1988 &amp; 1989. They were Nebraska State Champions in 1990.Lee was active in the Brewster Volunteer Fire Department, and he and his wife Beverly were EMTs for over 50 years. Recently retiring in 2022. He was awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. Nebraska EMT award in the 1990s.Lee and his beautiful wife continued to run mother cows and calves on the North Loup River in Blaine County. Raising quality black Angus cattle and cowboying with his favorite horses, Gray and Bem. &nbsp;Lee and Beverly have owned the Sandhills Guest Ranch Bed &amp; Breakfast for 27 years. They had guests from all over the world having met so many wonderful people. They blessed many lives with their home-cooked meals and Sandhills hospitality.Lee DeGroff is survived by his wife, Beverly; four children, Debra (Leon) Zimmerman of Broken Bow, NE, Rhonda (Mark) Haynes of Broken Bow, NE, Craig (Traci) DeGroff of Broken Bow, NE, and Ryan (Becky) DeGroff of Glenrock, WY; eight grandchildren: Jill (Jeremy) Houghtelling, Jaren Zimmerman, Jalee (Nick) Karmazin, Clinton (Megan) Haynes, Leigh (Matt) Stutzman, Kerri (Calder) Forcella, Kesha DeGroff, and Riley DeGroff; twelve great-grandchildren; siblings Ray DeGroff, Fay White, Mary Jane Riobotta, and Connie Strand.Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Jane DeGroff, and his sibling infant, Donna.
