Lloyd Eggleston age 74 of rural Broken Bow died Sunday February 26, 2023 at the Kearney Regional Hospital in Kearney.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 2, 2023, at 10:30 AM at the Oconto Community Center in Oconto, NE.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery southwest of Oconto with Military Honors.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post #250 or the Christ Lutheran Cemetery.

Lloyd Lynn "Cowboy" Eggleston was born March 10th, 1948.&nbsp; He passed away on February 26th with family at his side.&nbsp; He was born 6 miles north of Oconto, Nebraska where his Pa and Ma lived.&nbsp; The place was known at the time as the state place.&nbsp; Lloyd was born the seventh son of Elijah Luke Eggleston, his Pa and Zelda Grace "Hemphill" Eggleston, his Ma.&nbsp; He was also born in a blizzard and the doctor couldn't make it at the time.&nbsp; Lloyd started riding at a very young age, around 4 or 5 and he broke his own horse at that time.&nbsp; It was a Welch and to him, a big one.&nbsp; That's when his love for horses started.&nbsp; His older brothers Keith and Donnie helped him a bunch.&nbsp; But once in a while, they would put him on a bronc just to see if he could ride one.&nbsp; Sometime yes, sometimes no.&nbsp; After graduation from Oconto High School in 1966, Lloyd worked at co-op in Broken Bow until he was drafted into the Army in 1968.&nbsp; Lloyd spent 22 months for Uncle Sam in the Vietnam era.&nbsp; Lloyd went to Fort Lewis for basics then to Fort Knox, Kentucky where he got his training in Armor.&nbsp; He received his training as a gunner and got his orders to go to Germany.&nbsp; Lloyd qualified in firing various munitions.&nbsp; His favorite was 50 cal.&nbsp; Lloyd got an honorable discharge in 1970 March 13th.&nbsp;

On June 7th, 1970, Lloyd finally married his high school sweetheart Sandra Elaine Struempler and to this union, three sons were born: Cody, Justin, and Marty.&nbsp; Family was always very important to him.&nbsp; After they got married, Lloyd trained as a brand inspector in Scottsbluff.&nbsp; They lived there for 9 months then was moved to Minden, Nebraska.&nbsp; He was transferred to Blue Hill, Nebraska where he worked until June 1973.&nbsp; Then moved back to Broken Bow to work for Burlington Northern.&nbsp; He retired after 34 years.&nbsp; After retirement, Lloyd and Sandy enjoyed traveling and rodeos.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra Elaine, mother-in-law Elsie Struempler of Broken Bow, sons Cody (Tonia) of Gothenburg, Justin (Karisa) of Ceresco and Marty (Lisa) of Broken Bow.&nbsp; Grandchildren Shelby (Brad) McArthur of Sturgis, SD, Bryce (Shealyn) of Gothenburg, Seth of Gothenburg, Allison (Noah) Eivins of Manhattan, KS.&nbsp;Great-grandson, Ross McArthur of Sturgis, SD, and another great-grandchild on the way.&nbsp; He is also survived by his siblings, LaVonne (Gene) Oxford of Broken Bow, Loraine Rodgers of Franklin, Charles (Vicky) of Gothenburg, Judy (Maynard) Struempler of Oconto and Jane (Nick) LiaKos of Lawrence, KS.&nbsp; He is survived by many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents Elijah and Zelda, his father-in-law Herbert Struempler, brothers Kenneth, Keith,&nbsp;&nbsp;Donald, Glenn, Ivan and sister Ella Mae Casey.&nbsp;

Lloyd Eggleston (1948-2023)

Donald Glen Lif, 82, of Kearney, Nebraska, formerly of Lexington passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Kearney Regional Medical Center.

He was born on March 28, 1940, in Bridgeport, Nebraska to C. Albert and Hazel V. (McNeal) Lif. Don’s family relocated to Gothenburg then to Grand Island shortly after. Growing up, Don worked different jobs around town from selling the G.I. Independent papers, working at the Senior High cafeteria, selling concessions at ball games, drag races and wrestling matches as well as working during Harvest of Harmony. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High with the class of 1959. He then went on to further his education at Grand Island School of Business for two years where he met the love of his life, Ruth Ann.&nbsp; Don and Ruth Ann were united in marriage on June 3, 1962, in Aurora, Nebraska. Don and his family continued to live in Grand Island where he worked in the office for Preisendorf Plumbing Company before taking a job with Sperry New Holland. They relocated to Lexington in 1974 when Sperry New Holland opened a new plant. While living in Lexington, Don also did office work for the County working in the Treasurer and Assessor’s office, Plum Creek Medical Group, Orthman Manufacturing, DeBruce Grain and Tyson Meat Packing Plant. In their younger years, they kept busy raising their two children, Galen and Lesa. After that, Don and Ruth would go on many bus tours and loved spending time traveling together.

He was a part of various memberships throughout his life. He was a devout member of the Methodist Church in Grand Island and Lexington since 1952, including as a member of the church choir. He was a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society since 1985. He was a secretary of the Plum Creek Barbershoppers, where he was honored as Barbershopper of the year in 1992 and a hospitality chairman of the Kearney Area Barbershoppers, where he was honored as Barbershopper of the year in 2013.&nbsp; He was also a charter member of the Grand Island City Singers. He was a boy scout leader for 15 years and even played the bass horn with numerous polka bands in the Grand Island area.

The three pillars in Don’s life were his faith, family, and music. He loved singing and was so proud to be a part of the Barbershop. Don also enjoyed spending time with his family and playing cribbage and pinochle. In his later years, Don began painting, working on ceramics, and creating detailed colored pencil drawings.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, C. Albert and Hazel; his wife, Ruth Ann; brothers, Harold and Maynard Lif and sister, Alberta Wrage.

He is survived by his two children, Lesa (David) Gates of Parkville, Missouri and Galen (Lisa) Lif of Kansas City, Missouri; grandchildren, Austin Gates, Olivia Gates, and Samantha Lif; brother-in-law, Gordon (Sharon) Bigger, Jr. of Grand Island; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington with Pastor Sarah Neben, officiating. The service will be live streamed on the church website: firstchurchlex.org

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023, from 5-7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington.

Donald Glen Lif (1940-2023)

Rodney Chris Paulsen, 61, of Oshkosh passed away Monday, February 27, 2023 in Scottsbluff.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2023 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Scotty Ray officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Kowanda Cemetery.

Rodney Chris Paulsen (1962-2023)

Betty Louise Forsstrom, 89, of Ogallala, NE, passed away Monday, February 27, 2023 in Ogallala.

She was born March 24th, 1933 in Bayard, NE, to parents Joe and Lela (Meredith) Blackstone.&nbsp; She grew up on the family farm at Bayard and moved to Hemingford, NE where she graduated in 1950.&nbsp; Betty attended Chadron State College that summer to receive her teaching certificate. Betty married her high school sweetheart, Dale, on August 4th, 1951.&nbsp; This was the beginning of a lifelong partnership which blessed them with 3 children: Carla, Kathy and Doug. The beginning of her entrepreneurial life with Dale started with a small dairy herd that she bottled and delivered the milk in Hemingford. Later, they purchased the Dairy King, which Betty operated, and Dale had his barber shop from 1959-1964. The next two years the family lived in Hastings, NE, where they operated the Culligan Soft Water business. After a few camping trips to Lake McConaughy, Betty and Dale set their sights on Ogallala.&nbsp; They purchased Pete’s Package Liquor Store and later, the Culligan Soft Water Co., thus beginning their tenure as local fixtures in Ogallala.&nbsp;&nbsp; Betty was employed at Keith Co. Bank, now known as Adams Bank &amp; Trust for 10 plus years.&nbsp; She was active in the Ogallala Chamber of Commerce and received the Outstanding Woman of the Year award in 1976. In 1978, Betty and Dale purchased what became the local, legendary Pioneer Trails Steakhouse.&nbsp; Betty was the hostess and the first one to greet you.&nbsp; She was known for her high heels, jewelry and a friendly smile.&nbsp; They added Valentino’s pizza to the local restaurant and it is still in place today.

Betty’s family was always close to her heart and she made every family gathering special with lots of food and laughter.&nbsp; Nothing was better than having her grandchildren and great grandchildren with her.&nbsp; She shared her birthday with two of her grandchildren, Dustin and Sara. Her flower garden was her passion in retirement and was enjoyed by all. Betty can best be described as a loving, gracious, fashionable, and classy lady! She was a 60 year plus member of First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by; her two daughters Carla Flansburg, of Ogallala, Kathy (Gene)Collins of Castlerock, Colorado; a son Doug(Kristin) Forsstrom of Lonetree, Colorado; grandchildren, Darby (Erica) Flansburg of Ogallala, Dustin (Liesel) Flansburg of Falcon, Colorado, Shawn (Katy) Forsstrom of Arvada, Colorado, Sara (Dan) Vaughn of Parker, Colorado, Chad (Meredith) Collins of Parker, Colorado; 8 great-grandchildren with one on the way, Sadie, Tenlie, Addlie, Gavin and Cason Flansburg, Rylan and baby&nbsp; Collins, Henry Vaughn and Grayson Forsstrom; sister LaVonne Blackstone of Ogden, Utah and sister in-law Eloise “Cookie” (Marv) Kampbell of Hay Springs and her nieces and nephews. Betty is preceded in death by; her husband Dale Forsstrom; son-in-law, Danny Flansburg; parents Joe and Lela Blackstone; sister, Joan Fryman and brother, Chuck Blackstone.

Betty Louise (Blackstone) Forsstrom (1933-2023)

Ann P. (Shmorhun) Seda age 92 of Arnold, NE was born on January 28, 1931, in Wilton, North Dakota to John and Mary Shmorhun. She passed away Friday, February 24th, at Great Plains Regional Hospital in North Platte, NE surrounded by her family

Ann was the youngest of six children and at the age of thirteen she started work at the Wilton Café. There she caught the eye of a young wheat harvester, Louis Seda from Arnold, NE. She and Louis were married on November 9, 1950. At the age of 19 she moved over 480 miles south to her new home in Arnold not knowing anyone but her new husband’s family. Over the next five years she had four babies.

Throughout her life her home was always immaculate, and her lawn and huge garden beautiful. She was a real green thumb with her roses. She was awarded the Arnold lawn recognition several times. Every summer she canned produce, froze corn, and pretty much could have fed an army. She was a marvelous cook and her goulash was a family favorite along with her cinnamon rolls.

Ann babysat many children throughout the years. Gretchen Mills and Vanessa Harvey called her Grandma Ann and would hide when their parents came to pick them up because they wanted to stay. Ann loved babies and would snuggle them anytime she had a chance.

Louis passed away in 2008 and Ann remained in her home independently for another eight years. She sold the place in 2016 and moved to Riverview Apartments. She was the unofficial “Walmart greeter” from her apartment number one. Her residence was the first to be renovated last summer and she was so happy with it. Her door was open most of the time and she always had lots of visitors. Many friends stopped every morning for coffee and a roll. She turned into quite the card shark at the evening card games in the social room.

We thank all the residents at Riverview who were so kind and helped Ann be able to independently live. A huge thanks also goes to Diane and Mo Sandford who were always available anytime she needed assistance.

Ann is survived by her children, Cheryl Smith of Harlingen, TX, Roger (Sue) Seda of Anselmo, Karen (Mitch) Kamla of Ogallala, and Cindy (Bob) Ambler of Broken Bow, ten grandchildren, Lisa (Dick) Mauro of Conroe, TX, Bill Perkey of Harlingen, TX, Amy (Brandon) Nansel of Arnold, Riley (Stephanie) Seda of Anselmo, Heidie (Brian) Beaumont of Ansley, Holly Kramer of Broken Bow, Heather (Nick) Thomas of Goodland, KS, Chad Ambler of Broken Bow, Bridget (Brian) Wold of Lincoln, and Joe (Rachelle) Ambler of Elkhorn, and 16 great grandchildren.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband Louis, her parents, two sisters, three brothers, a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law, extended family and many good friends.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 3, 2023, at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Arnold, NE. Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery. She passed away Friday, February 24th, at Great Plains Regional Hospital in North Platte, NE surrounded by her familyAnn was the youngest of six children and at the age of thirteen she started work at the Wilton Café. There she caught the eye of a young wheat harvester, Louis Seda from Arnold, NE. She and Louis were married on November 9, 1950. At the age of 19 she moved over 480 miles south to her new home in Arnold not knowing anyone but her new husband’s family. Ann Seda (1931-2023)

Kelly Martin Dorscher was born in Walnut, Iowa to June and Martin Dorscher on August 17, 1943 and left this life on February 24, 2023. He is survived by his only daughter, Deidre Andres Dorscher, who misses him with all her heart; his sister Kris Ferry, her husband David and their children Shannon and Kendra; his brother Rodney Dorscher, his wife Becky and their girls Angela and Elizabeth. He is also survived by his cat Snowball, nephews Elijah and Luke Bergmeier, and special friends Cindy Walter and Percy Carl York along with so many others.

He is preceded in death by his parents June and Martin, sister Carol, niece Amy, soulmate Karen, and his faithful dog Brownie.

Kelly graduated from Fairbury Junior College and the University of Nebraska Lincoln with a degree in accounting. He moved with his family to Cozad where he eventually became secretary/treasurer for Paulsen’s; in the 80’s opened Kelly’s Hardware. Customers, and all who knew him, will miss Kelly’s jocularity and fun spirit.&nbsp; Kelly loved life and never met a stranger. He traveled the world and made friends wherever he roamed. The world will be a little less fun without him.

There will be a celebration of life for Kelly on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cozad Elks Lodge. We all know that Kelly loved gathering with friends and family. We hope you can join us.

Kelly M Dorscher (1943-2023)

Iris Mae (McNeal) Matz entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 23, 2023, at the age of 95.

She was the third child born to Clarence and Daphna McNeal on October 13, 1927, in Cozad, NE. Growing up on a farm east of Gothenburg, NE, she enjoyed riding her pony on the country roads and writing skits using younger brother Leigh as the main actor. Iris attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Gothenburg High School with the class of 1946. At the dance hall operated by her father, she met the love of her life and was married to Delmar Matz on her 20th birthday, October 13, 1947, by the justice of the peace with her parents and Delmar’s mother, Mildred Roepke, witnessing this joyous occasion. Delmar and Iris made their home in Lexington, NE, and she was a stay-at-home mother for their three sons. Delmar died suddenly in 1984; but her love for him remained an ever-present memory for the rest of her life.

In childhood, Iris shared a room with her sister Donna, and they prayed together every night. However, it was not until her forties that Iris finally understood the gospel message of the Bible. Her sons asked her, “Mom are you saved?” and her usual answer was, “I won’t know until I die.” While doing research for a Christmas program, the truth of John 3:16 suddenly made sense, “whosoever believeth in Jesus Christ would receive eternal life.” By faith, Iris believed, her whole life changed, and she knew her future destiny was heaven. She served her Lord at the Lexington Berean Bible Church for over 50 years and shared her faith with others as opportunities presented.

During her widowhood, Iris used her creative abilities to bring happiness, laughter, and encouragement to many. She wrote and performed Minnie Pearl monologues, honored residents at Southview Manor in Cozad, NE, with birthday parties for seven years without repeating a monthly theme and brought encouragement to grieving widows with “Son Shine Baskets.” She also wrote plays that were performed at Avamere, an elder care facility in Lexington, and at her church.

Those left to carry on her legacy are: Lon (Andrea) Matz, Madison, WI; Randy (Cindy) Matz, Cordova, TN; and Brent (Cindy) Matz, Lincoln, NE, 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Iris was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and 3 siblings.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023, from 4-6 p.m. at the Berean Bible Church in Lexington.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the Lexington Berean Bible Church, 210 W. 7th Street, Lexington, NE 68850. She married Donald Rose at St. John's Lutheran Church in Alliance on May 8th, 1955.&nbsp; &nbsp;They made their home 10 miles north of Lakeside, NE on the Joy Camp of the Meyers Land and Cattle Company. In 1963, they moved to Arthur, NE, where she worked on the Sillassen Ranch as the ranch cook.&nbsp; They moved into Arthur in 1979 where Dorothy worked as a waitress and&nbsp; for the Village of Arthur.

Dorothy is preceded in death by; her husband Don, and her parents Ernest and Elsie. Fay June Schmeeckle, known as June, age 90, passed away on Thursday, February 23rd, 2023 in Aurora, Colorado.&nbsp;

She was born on July 13th, 1932 to Ray E and Dorothy A. Spencer Ostendorf in Gothenburg, Nebraska.&nbsp;

She is survived by her daughters Monica (Jeff) Miers and Marcy (Frank) Mass. Grandchildren Bridger Miers, Grayson Miers, Kylie Mass and Samantha Mass.&nbsp; Stepchildren Cindy (Randy) Schneider, Connie (Rod) Diaz, Pam (Ron) Jacobson, and Mike (Sara) Schmeeckle. Many step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Sister-in-law Helen Ostendorf. Many nieces and nephews. June is preceded in death by her husband Carl Schmeeckle, her parents Ray and Dorothy Spencer Ostendorf, twin brother Ray Junior Ostendorf, brother Henry Roger Ostendorf and sister-in-law Margaret Ostendorf, and half sisters Faith Henslee and Vera Starks.&nbsp;

June lived in Gothenburg for 85 years. She was thrust into the caregiver and homemaker roles rather quickly after her mother died when she was 5 years old. She took care of her brothers as they grew up together. She graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1951. June traveled to Idaho to visit her half sisters and worked in a cannery there for a summer but preferred home in Gothenburg. She worked in a few different cafés in town and most notably at the Gothenburg Movie Theatre where she was known as the Popcorn Lady. She worked and saved money so she could help her Dad buy a lot and build a house of their own. It was later in life when she met a really great guy who was just her size, the love of her life, Carl. Carl and June married on May 2nd, 1970. A few years later, they welcomed two daughters and June’s main job was being the best mom and helping Carl with his business, Schmeeckle Land Leveling.&nbsp;

June loved flowers and gardening. She embroidered and enjoyed arts &amp; crafts, puzzles, reading, bingo and cornhole. She had a soft spot for animals and over the years had many types of animals but most recently she enjoyed the companionship of her two cats, Cleo &amp; Niko, and doted on them.&nbsp;

After Carl’s death, June moved to Aurora, Colorado to be closer to her daughter, Monica. For the last four and a half years, she lived in a 55+ community with many new friends to spend time with and many activities to participate in, including little field trips around the city of Denver. She even served on the Resident Council. June reflected recently that she lived a great life and had fun even though she had a few blips in the road. She loved her family and friends. She will be missed but we know she is happy to be reunited with her loved ones in Heaven.

Fay June Schmeeckle (1932-2023)

Norma Luene (Bryant) Brink, age 100, of Lubbock, TX formerly of 
Plattsmouth, NE peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at
 Brookdale Remington Park in Lubbock. She was born on September 7, 
1922, to Ray Victor Bryant and Florence V. (McNeel) Bryant in North 
Platte, NE. Norma was raised and schooled in Plattsmouth and she 
graduated from Plattsmouth High School with the class of 1940. Norma met
 the love of her life, Elmore “Toots” James Brink and they were later 
married on February 7, 1942, in Plattsmouth. Norma and Toots made their

Norma Luene (Bryant) Brink, age 100, of Lubbock, TX formerly of 
Plattsmouth, NE peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at
 Brookdale Remington Park in Lubbock. She was born on September 7, 
1922, to Ray Victor Bryant and Florence V. (McNeel) Bryant in North 
Platte, NE. Norma was raised and schooled in Plattsmouth and she 
graduated from Plattsmouth High School with the class of 1940. Norma met
 the love of her life, Elmore “Toots” James Brink and they were later 
married on February 7, 1942, in Plattsmouth. Norma and Toots made their 
home and raised their boys in Plattsmouth. In 1970, they moved to North

Sarah was born September 19, 1925, in Finchville, NE to Robert and Jeanetta (Christensen) Shaw. She died February 21, 2023, at the Quality Senior Village in Broken Bow, NE.

She graduated from Arnold High School in 1942 at the age of 16. She taught school at Rye Valley and Hoosier Valley schools before marrying Ora Crouch on December 23, 1945. To this union were born six children. She carried mail for 44 years and always raised a large garden.&nbsp; She loved to crochet, read, and do jigsaw puzzles.

She is survived by; three sons, Bob (Cindy) of St. Paul, Jim (Mary) of Merna, and Marvin (Judy) of Kearney; two daughters, Barbara (Myron) Mason of Anselmo, and Carla (Jim) Stark of Washington, KS; one brother, Bill (Darlene) Shaw of Broken Bow; two sisters, Geneieve Lindly of Eugene, OR and Colleen Grubb of Wenatchee, WA;&nbsp; 20 grandchildren,&nbsp; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ora, her parents; Robert and Jeanetta Shaw; her daughter, Patricia Connealy; three brothers, Eddie Shaw, twins Larry and John Shaw; four sisters, Abbie (David) Zoerb, Harriett (Loyal) Robinson, Olive (Howard) Simms, and Bonnie Reed; and two brothers-in-law, Dub Lindly, and Dale Grubb.

I was born at home in Finchville, NE. I was apparently a "preemie" because my sister Harriet said the she remembers Mom wrapping me in a blanket and putting me in a shoebox, then placing the shoebox in the warming oven on the stove. When I was very little, I got into the Daisy fly killer. It was a 4" x 6" pan that was painted green and had daisies painted on the top. Each daisy had a yellow cork in the center which was removed to fill with water, and then it would be put out to kill flies. I sucked on one of the corks. Mom gave me some ipecac and had my sisters walk me to keep me awake. They called the doctor, but when he came out, he said that Mom had done everything he would have so he went back to town. I survived. One time Elmer Halouska was running in school and fell against a desk that had a broken seat. He cut his head but I was the one who passed out at the sight of blood. We usually walked to school which was 2 miles away. We milked cows and feed the calves each morning before heading for school and then again each night after getting home from school. We attended the Lower Finchville school through grade school. The home place was located southeast (mainly south) of Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Libbies. I would go stay at their place. One time I told Aunt Libbie that I would help her do the dishes if she'd put me on a chair. I always was short. Uncle Lawrence made up a poem about it: Little Miss Sarah sat on a chair, No one can see her but still she is there. Dad would give me some change when he left to go to the Post Office to work. I would hide it under the living room rug. Mom said when they took up the rug to replace it there was enough money under it to pay for the new one.

Mom always sent me out with Dad when he went out to work I think it was because of his age. Dad always called me "Ben". One day, Dad was working a field with four horses pulling a harrow, when some guys pulled up in a car and asked him to go help them. He told me to drive the horses to the middle of the field and drop the tugs and then take them to the barn and Mom would help me unharness them. They asked Dad if he was sure I could do it because I was so small. He told them not to worry, she can handle it. The horses Dad used were big horses. We would have to crawl into the feed box to put the bridles on them. "Old Turk" was a skunk tail roan he sired most of our colts. "Baldie" was a bald faced sorrel we had. One day we saw the hired man hit Baldie with a chain, so we hid the chain in a tree so he couldn't do it again. Dad had good horses and he was very proud of them. I remember one time that Fred H. wanted a horse. Dad wasn't too keen on giving one to him but Fred kept pleading and finally Dad gave him Belle. He told Fred that he would have to keep Belle in the barn when he wasn't using her because she was blind and if left out in the pasture, she might get bit by a snake. A few months later Fred came to ask if he could get another horse because Belle had been bitten by a snake and died. Dad said I don't have another horse to give you to which Fred retorted, "There are two people I have no use for, Jesus Christ and Bob Shaw". Dad felt that this put him in pretty good company. During the summers, if we weren't milking cows, we were herding sheep. When out herding sheep, Dad always told us to stay on our horses so we wouldn't get bit by a snake. One time, while herding sheep, we found some baby rabbits. We took 2 of them home with us and raised them on a bottle. One died shortly after we got them home but the other one we managed to raise until it was about big enough to eat only our dog Brownie beat us to it. One time, Bonnie and I went to get the cows in for milking and when we stopped to open the gate, I picked up a big stick. Bonnie asked me what I thought I was going to do with that stick to which I replied, "Kill a snake". And sure enough, before we got back home, I had killed a rattlesnake. One day, Dad bought Bonnie a welsh pony. Bill wanted it but Dad said no that it was to be her pony. Bill kept begging and finally Dad told him that he'd have to wait for the first colt. When the pony was delivered it had a colt by its side. We had 2 welsh ponies, Babe and Beauty. If we wanted to go to town, we would go to the railroad tracks and flag down the train, pay our fare and ride into town. One day as Harriet and Olive were returning home from the river, they decided to place their shoes on the railroad tracks so the train would run over them and they could get a new pair. (They had painted their shoes to make them look like oxfords but it hadn't turned out so good.) After walking a ways, they suddenly had the thought of what if the shoes caused the train to derail and it would be their fault. They ran as fast as they could back and grabbed their shoes off the rails and hurried on home before anyone could see them.

We also had a pony named "Prince". I remember him because we raised turkeys and he would be so careful not to step on the baby turkeys. He contracted encephalitis and died.

It would always be just us girls as we walked to school but on the way home from school we would walk with some of the neighbor kids like Woodwards, the other Shaw kids and the Hill kids. We would dawdle along more then as we weren't in such a hurry. I remember that one teacher promoted Loye and I up a grade.

I remember the summer that Colleen was born. Bonnie, Genevieve, and I had to go to stay with Uncle Lawrence while Libbie came to take care of Mom. We crawled in bed with Uncle Lawrence and just about then, the rooster crowed. Uncle Lawrence told us not to pay attention to him, he talks in his sleep. Mom always made bread from yeast foam. The next morning at Uncle Lawrence's, I made bread for the first time. My batch wasn't as big as Mom's because my hand wasn't as big as hers. For you see, she taught us to measure the salt, sugar and other ingredients in our hand. I remember one Christmas when Harriet was supposed to help fill the stockings, but she fell asleep instead. So the next morning some of us wrapped a bundle of sticks to get even with her. During my 8th&nbsp;grade year, I had pneumonia. It was the same time that Bill had Bright's disease. I got well just in time to take the 8th&nbsp;grade exams. In High School, kids thought that Loye and I were twins. We were in the same grade and had the same last name. They didn't realize he was my nephew.

We attended High School in Arnold. The first year, Winnie, Loye and I rented a room and did light housekeeping at Mrs. Chillicote's. She became ill so we rented rooms and moved there to finish the year. My sophomore year we rented rooms from the McMahans. I roomed with Lucille and Loye. Later that year I stayed with Abbie and David and rode to school with Geisers. My junior year, I also rode to school with Geisers. I think that was the year that Olive froze her legs. My senior year, Dad bought us a car and Loye drove with Donna, Norma, Esther, Bonnie and I. I graduated in 1942 at the age of 16. Mom died in April just before I graduated in May.

After Mom's death, I stayed at home for the first year after I had graduated. The next 2 years, I taught school at Rye Valley. Dad passed away in June of 1945 and I worked for Glen Graybeal in the store that summer then my third year of teaching was at Hoosier Valley. I boarded with Bill and Ruth Winchester until I got married halfway through that school year.

We then stayed with Ora's folks on their place in Hoosier Valley. When his folks moved to outside of Merna, we made the move with them. (This was to a house that stood on the west side of the highway across from what is now the Cole place, just northwest of Merna.) Pat was born while we lived there. Ora's folks then moved to a farm by Broken Bow, but we stayed in Merna and lived with Wilda and Junior Diefenbaugh for a few months. We then moved above the telephone office in Merna. Next, we lived in a big three story house west of what is now (2007) called Petro Plus. We lived on the ground floor of that house. Williams lived on the second floor and Johnsons lived on the third floor. We then bought a house across and west from the Lutheran church. Bob was born while we lived there.

We then moved to Anselmo and rented a room from Mrs. Christen in the house where Howard Dickey lives now. From there we moved across the tracks to Hubert Miller's house. Barb was born while we lived there. It was about this time that I started carrying mail. Next we rented the Thompson house northwest of the school (Hogg's house). Our next move was just a half of a block east to Ruby Ganow's house. It was while we were living here, that Ora was hurt while fighting a fire at Budge Knoell's shop out by New Helena. He and 2 other men were lifted on a farm hand of a tractor to try and spray water down on the fire, when the farm hand tipped backwards and dumped them off. Ora suffered a bad gash in his back and had his ear nearly tom off. They brought him by ambulance to the house where Dr. Spivey stitched him back up. Carla was born just before we moved to Edith Beardsley's house. We were there for a couple of years before moving out by the park to Budge Knoell's house which was located just east of his shop. Ora worked for Budge, running heavy equipment at this time. Jim was born while we lived here. We then bought a house just north of Anselmo, which I still live in. Marvin was born while we lived here. Ora worked at a number of different jobs during this time. He drove his own truck and then drove truck for Joe McDermott. He ran a filling station, a pool hall, and did construction work. He helped build the Milburn dam, carried mail (starting in 1948 to 1951 when I started carrying). Helped move snow, and build a number of roads. I always had a large garden and did a lot of canning. When possible I raised chickens, both frying chickens and laying hens.

Ora worked for Budge, running heavy equipment at this time. Jim was born while we lived here. We then bought a house just north of Anselmo, which I still live in. Marvin was born while we lived here. Ora worked at a number of different jobs during this time. He drove his own truck and then drove truck for Joe McDermott. He ran a filling station, a pool hall, and did construction work. He helped build the Milburn dam, carried mail (starting in 1948 to 1951 when I started carrying). Helped move snow, and build a number of roads. I always had a large garden and did a lot of canning. When possible I raised chickens, both frying chickens and laying hens.

Veda Charlene Walz, 85, of Stapleton, passed away February 22, 2023 at Great Plains Health.&nbsp; She was born October 29, 1937 to C.C. Felix and Vera (Wilmoth) Deterding in Arnold.

Charlene moved from Arnold to Stapleton as a child and resided there all her life.&nbsp; She graduated from Stapleton High School with the class of 1956.&nbsp;&nbsp; Charlene enlisted in the United States Army and served from June 1957 to June 1959.&nbsp; She married Leo Walz on April 20, 1960 and they had three children: Jeana, Denise and Rex. Charlene was a stay-at-home mother where she raised her family.&nbsp; She loved to cook and bake and volunteered at the blood mobile and elections.&nbsp; Charlene was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Altar Society and American Legion Post #324, where she was secretary for many years.&nbsp; She loved the outdoors and tending to her flowers.&nbsp; She was proud of her service to her country.&nbsp; She loved to see and visit with all of her grandchildren, especially before their ball games.

&nbsp; LAURA LYNN (IWAN) DEVRIES, 47, of Ogallala, passed away on February 10, 2023, in Lincoln, Nebraska, as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Laura was born on July 9, 1975, in Ogallala, Nebraska, to Tim and Sandy (Michal) Iwan. She graduated from Ogallala High School in 1993 and went on to attend Chadron State College, where she earned a degree in Business and Library Science and later earned her Master's degree in Educational Technology from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. On June 10, 1995, Laura married high school sweetheart David "Andy" DeVries, and they were later blessed with four children: Raelyn, Ryanna, Michael, and Reegan. Laura was a devoted mother who cherished spending time with her family. For years she persisted in her role as a part-time farmer, whether it was taking lunch to the field, driving tractor, or laying out pipe. For nearly 28 years, she loved Andy and her kids, caring for them so well and speaking wisdom into their lives daily. Laura loved the Lord deeply and revealed this love to everyone she encountered. She lived her life being very ministry-oriented, always looking for ways to reveal Jesus to those she was surrounded by. She was a member of GracePoint Church where she led child and youth ministries for many years and later on served as the church's treasurer. Laura taught at South Platte Schools as a librarian, speech and personal finance teacher, and FBLA and junior class sponsor. She cared deeply for her students and was always willing to do what she could to help them be successful. In addition to being a support to her students at school, she also provided support to her children in their endeavors whether it was fine arts, athletic, academic, 4-H, or ministry related. If there was an event one of the kids was involved in, you could almost guarantee she had a button or a t-shirt that she would wear proudly. Laura had a quiet yet witty quality about her. She was a natural leader and advocate. Her passion for people and ways of clever thinking made her an exceptional mentor and friend. Laura was always eager to lend a hand and share her knowledge. She served her community by being a member of the Keith Co. 4-H Council, Farm Bureau, and supporting the Ogallala Band and Athletic Boosters. Her leadership, kindness, and unwavering support for those she loved will be deeply missed. Laura was preceded in death by her father, Tim Iwan, her paternal grandparents, Edward and Darlien Iwan, her maternal grandparents, Mike and Irene Michal, and her cousins, Elizabeth Iwan and Chuck Bensley. Jerry&nbsp;Johnson was born December 23, 1938, in Gandy, NE, to Arthur and Nedra Johnson and he passed away at his home in Logan County on February 20, 2023, at the age of 84.

Jerry attended school in Gandy through the 8th grade then went to the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis. Following high school graduation he attended Chadron State College for two years. He married Donna Schlem and they raised two daughters. Jerry worked on a ranch for 45 years, 20 years as a ranch hand and 20 more as foreman, and obtained his real estate and brokers licenses. He was active in Logan County where he served as County Commissioner for 12 years, was on the Extension Board for 2 terms and served a few terms on the Fair Board. Jerry enjoyed his horses and team roping, calf roping and team penning. He looked forward to riding and driving and in later years played a fair amount of golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Nedra; brother, James Johnson; sisters, Arta Jean Kramer, Joan Gaites and Janice Johnson; and granddaughter, Meagan Schroeder. Survivors include Jerry's wife, Donna; daughters, Dodie Johnson and Laurie (Doug) Streeter of North Platte; granddaughter, Kaylen Streeter and grandson, Logan Streeter; great-grandkids, Rylee, Kyen and Tysean Schroeder; sister-in-law, Jackie Johnson of South Dakota; as well as numerous nieces, nephews other family.

Dorothy Jane Simants, 83, of Brady, NE passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at her home.

Dorothy was born on November 18, 1939 in Lincoln, NE the daughter of Earl Edward and Margaret Jane (Beatty) Morgan. She attended Washington grade school and graduated from North Platte High School in 1958 and later the North Platte Beauty Academy. She became a licensed beautician in the state of NE. On August 16, 1966 she married Lawrence Raymond Simants and together they had three sons. Dorothy attended the First Presbyterian church while living in North Platte. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing as well as raising chickens.

Those left to cherish her memory are sons, Steven Simants of Seward, Scott (Becky) Simants of Gothenburg, and Larry Simants of Gothenburg; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Larry; brothers, Robert and Edward Morgan; daughter-in-law, LaRee; and grandparents, Robert and Ethel Beatty.

Gerald Francis was born on May 3, 1933, in Fordyce, Nebraska, to Edmund
 Ludwig and Gertrude Alma (Kathol) Hochstein.&nbsp; He grew up in Fordyce, NE
 and attended school in Fordyce until the 10th grade.&nbsp; He 
graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1950.&nbsp; After high school, 
Jerry began farming with his dad and then married Joan Marie Schwartz on
 April 12, 1955, in Hartington. In 1958, he began farming south of 
Pleasant Valley, NE which is the home place. He raised livestock and 
grain.&nbsp; Jerry and Joan lived on the farm until moving into Hartington in
 2004. Farming was always the love of Jerry’s life and continued to be 
active in the farming operation even after moving into town.

Jerry was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the 4th
 Degree Knights, National Cattleman’s Association, National Corn Growers
 Association, and the American Soybean Association. Jerry loved to bowl 
and was a member of the 800 Series Club with an 807 series in 1998.&nbsp; He 
was a Pioneer and Dekalb Seed Corn salesman.&nbsp; He received the 
Outstanding Young Farmer award on December 8, 1959.&nbsp; He was involved in 
4-H his entire life.&nbsp; Formerly played baseball and softball until he was
 56 years old.&nbsp; Jerry golfed and was a member of the Hole-in-One Club 
having had two holes-in-one.&nbsp; He was a former Hartington Golf 
Invitational Champion.&nbsp; Jerry and Joan loved to travel and several of 
their trips were to Australia and New Zealand and numerous other 
locations. He was always ready to come back to the farm sooner than 
later.

Gerald is survived by his wife Joan of Hartington; five children Pam 
Howell of Hartington, Frank (Andrea) Hochstein of Hartington, Brad 
Hochstein (Katie VanBuren) of Hutchinson, KS, Deb (Mark) Sitzman of 
Scottsbluff, NE, John (Rebecca) Hochstein of Sioux Falls, SD; 14 
grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters Norma Sparks of 
Socorro, New Mexico, Deanna “Toots” Lockman of Norfolk, NE; many nieces 
and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents Edmund and Gertrude 
Hochstein; two infants Mary and Gerard; a brother Richard “Dick” 
Hochstein; and a sister Alice Hochstein.

 Ludwig and Gertrude Alma (Kathol) Hochstein.&nbsp; He grew up in Fordyce, NE
 and attended school in Fordyce until the 10th grade.&nbsp; He 
graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1950.&nbsp; After high school, 
Jerry began farming with his dad and then married Joan Marie Schwartz on
 April 12, 1955, in Hartington. In 1958, he began farming south of 
Pleasant Valley, NE which is the home place. He raised livestock and 
grain.&nbsp; Jerry and Joan lived on the farm until moving into Hartington in
 2004. Farming was always the love of Jerry’s life and continued to be 
active in the farming operation even after moving into town.Jerry was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the 4th
 Degree Knights, National Cattleman’s Association, National Corn Growers
 Association, and the American Soybean Association. Jerry loved to bowl 
and was a member of the 800 Series Club with an 807 series in 1998.&nbsp; He 
was a Pioneer and Dekalb Seed Corn salesman.&nbsp; He received the 
Outstanding Young Farmer award on December 8, 1959.&nbsp; He was involved in 
4-H his entire life.&nbsp; Formerly played baseball and softball until he was
 56 years old.&nbsp; Jerry golfed and was a member of the Hole-in-One Club 
having had two holes-in-one.&nbsp; He was a former Hartington Golf 
Invitational Champion.&nbsp; Jerry and Joan loved to travel and several of 
their trips were to Australia and New Zealand and numerous other 
locations. He was always ready to come back to the farm sooner than 
later.Gerald is survived by his wife Joan of Hartington; five children Pam 
Howell of Hartington, Frank (Andrea) Hochstein of Hartington, Brad 
Hochstein (Katie VanBuren) of Hutchinson, KS, Deb (Mark) Sitzman of 
Scottsbluff, NE, John (Rebecca) Hochstein of Sioux Falls, SD; 14 
grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters Norma Sparks of 
Socorro, New Mexico, Deanna “Toots” Lockman of Norfolk, NE; many nieces 
and nephews.Gerald was preceded in death by his parents Edmund and Gertrude 
Hochstein; two infants Mary and Gerard; a brother Richard “Dick” 
Hochstein; and a sister Alice Hochstein.

Gerald 'Jerry' F. Hochstein (1933-2023)

Bruce Allen Brinker, age 62, of North Platte, passed away at Great 
Plains Health on February 18, 2023. Bruce was born to William "Bill" and Lolita Brinker at Newcastle, WY, on 
July 3, 1960.&nbsp; He grew up in Chadron, NE, Rapid City, SD, and Corpus 
Christi, TX, where he graduated from high school in 1978.&nbsp; He then moved to North Platte and hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad, working as a signalman. Bruce was united in marriage to Vickie Williss Tilford on March 20, 
1993, in North Platte where they made their home. Bruce was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen.&nbsp; He liked 
Nebraska sports and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching John Wayne movies, and playing slot machines.&nbsp; Bruce especially loved his family and making people laugh. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Lolita Brinker; and 
in-laws, Bob and Bea Williss. Bruce is survived by his wife, Vickie; son, James Brinker of Geneva and 
daughter, Stacy Brinker of Tulsa, OK; stepchildren, Cyrus Tilford and 
Tanille (Thomas) Keefer of North Platte; his sister, Teresa (Curt) Bach

Dennis L. Miller, 70, of North Platte, NE, passed away on February 15, 2023 at Great Plains Health.&nbsp; He was born on October 9, 1952 in Rochester, IN to Charles and Marjorie (McCalla) Miller.&nbsp;

As a young adult, Dennis moved to Garden City, KS.&nbsp; He then moved to North Platte in 2012 where he worked for Rail Crew Express until 2021.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, taking them fishing and going for motorcycle rides.&nbsp; He was a collector of lighters and loved his fish.&nbsp; Dennis adored his grandchildren and making memories with them any moment he could.&nbsp; He could be stubborn but was always reliable and was often known as a jokester.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Those left to remember Dennis include, his children, Lynn Miller, Mari Coleman, and Joe Brown; grandchildren, Dakota, Dallas, AJ, Brody, Dennis "Garrett", Jaide, Korvin, and Tegan; brother, Don Miller; and Jenice Miller.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Charles and Marjorie; siblings, Marsha and Ron; grand-daughter, Amanda.

A celebration of life will be held in North Platte at a later date for friends and family.

Dennis Miller (1952-2023)

M. Carol McAllister died on February 14, 2023, in hospice at Friendship Manor, Rock Island. 
She was born November 4, 1924, to Dwight and Inez (DeHaven) Phillips in 
Hay Springs, Nebraska. After graduating high school at 16, she worked 
locally at the Gambles Store, First National Bank, and Northwestern 
State Bank. She then attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, 
where she met her future husband, Lee McAllister. They married on May 
27, 1947, and moved to Moline, Illinois, in 1948. To this union, three 
children were born; Thomas (Cozad, NE); Rebecca (North Platte, NE); and 
Jeana McAllister (Champaign, IL). 
While raising her family, Carol was active in PTA, League of Women 
Voters, and Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church – where she served as 
treasurer for many years and was involved in the Priscilla Circle and 
the women's society. She worked at the Trinity School of Nursing from 
1975 to 2000. Preceded in death by her husband, all her children survive. Her sister, Marvel Heuke (Kearney, NE), also survives. 
Her final gift was to donate her body to the Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City. A memorial service will be planned for a later date. Memorials in 
Carol's honor may be made to Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church,

Catherine Patricia “Cathy” Coder, age 
89, of Lincoln, NE, passed away February 18, 2023.&nbsp; Cathy was born July
 2, 1933, to William and May Cohen in Wallace, NE, where she was raised 
and attended grade school.&nbsp; Cathy graduated from St. Patrick High School
 in North Platte, NE.&nbsp; She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln 
and graduated from McCook College with a Teaching Degree. Cathy taught 
grade school in Wallace and McCook.

Cathy married George Coder on October 
2, 1954, and they were blessed with four children and six 
grandchildren.&nbsp; They moved to Lincoln, NE, in 1973, where she lived the 
rest of her life.

Survivors include daughters Patricia 
Coder of Lincoln, NE; Pamela Smith (Stuart and son Patrick) of Overland 
Park, KS; and sons William Coder (Maria and children Will, T.J. and 
Kathleen) of Highlands Ranch, CO; James Coder (Stephanie and daughters 
Madison and Mackenzie) of Scottsdale, AZ; and sister-in-law Sue Kagarise
 of Newnan, GA.

Cathy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all seven siblings.&nbsp;

Alice Marian Knox, 82, of North Platte, Nebraska passed away on February 17, 2023 at Great Plains Health in North Platte.&nbsp;

Alice was born the 7th&nbsp;of 12 babies to Willie and Mable Oltmans on Feb. 25, 1940. The farm near the Filley township of Gage County Nebraska would be her home until graduation from Filley High School in 1958.&nbsp;&nbsp;After earning her LPN at Kearney State College, Alice began practicing at the hospital in Kearney Nebraska. Married to Ivan Knox in Kearney, June 1962, Alice would soon surrender her smart white uniform for the clothes one wears while raising four kids in North Platte Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition to kid’s, husband, and school activities, Alice was a 50+ year active member at First Lutheran Church in North Platte.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;MS took her ability to walk in the 1980’s, but it never slowed her down or dampened her faith in God’s promises.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Alice was a rock for her husband and family for 60 years, and she will be missed.&nbsp;&nbsp;Alice had a friend in Jesus, and that is what she wanted for me and you, she told me this many times. &nbsp;

Alice was preceded in death by husband Ivan, 1st&nbsp;born son Daniel, her parents, and several brothers and sisters.&nbsp;&nbsp;Alice is survived by daughter Phyllis Knox and partner Steve Ridinger, son Randy and wife Lesley Knox, son William Knox, sister Jan Oltmans, and brothers Louis, Melvin, and Arnold Oltmans.&nbsp;&nbsp;Alice was a proud grandmother to eight grandchildren, and one great grandson, Archer Epps. &nbsp;

Alice Marian Knox (1940-2023)

Wilford "Buzz" Jr. Cole, 96, of Curtis, Nebraska, died February 17, 2023 in North Platte, NE. &nbsp; Buzz was born January 28, 1927, in a farm house 12 miles south of Curtis, to Wilford Lowell and Jessie Maye (Gilliland) Cole. Growing up Buzz had no close neighbors but entertained himself with his pet dogs, cats, pigeons, pet owl and his horse Beauty. He started school at the age of four riding his horse Beauty to school. His parents farmed, and after a severe winter in 1934 and battling grasshoppers in the summer of 1935 they gave up farming and moved to town where his dad worked as a mechanic and his mother took odd jobs. In town, Buzz started school with strangers, and quickly adopted a love for music and musical instruments. After school, his summers were filled with fishing, and exploring the Curtis Lake. In the fall and winter he hunted rabbits, quail, pheasants and trapped. Buzz went to High School at NSA in Curtis where his love for music and musical instruments led him to choir and band, where he played several variations of the Saxophone, playing in the Orchestra and band groups and solo competitions. After graduation, Buzz worked at the McCook Air Base as an Air Craft mechanic assistant. Buzz joined the Navy in 1944 at the age of 17, where he was trained as an electrician, acquiring the name Buzz, and was assigned to a 220' mine sweeper named the USS Heed, operating from Hawaii to Sasabo, Japan; Shanghai China; Amoy China Formosa and multiple Islands in the region. He maintained generators, battery strings and wiring on ship to support mine sweep op's. After his discharge, Buzz enrolled in the electrical program at Milford Trade School where he met and married Bonnie Jean Wilsey on December 4, 1948. His career as an electrician after trade school included a short stay in Curtis, Reliable Electric Co. in Denver and in 1966 back to Curtis where he became the Physical Plant Director and taught electrical and welding at UNSA until retirement. Buzz was a lifelong member of the Curtis Methodist Church, where singing in the choir was his passion. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. He received the Curtis Community Citizen of the Year award in 2013, on April 26, 2007 he married Mary Mitchell. Survivors include wife, Mary Cole of North Platte, NE; two sons, Steve (Linda) Cole of Curtis, NE; Nicholas Cole of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren, Kristi (John) Wetzel, Cairo, NE; Jeff (Jimi) Cole, Arnold, NE: Codi (Greg) Mortell, Susanville, CA; Stacy Cole and Mike Davis, Lincoln, NE; Jeremy (Dustie) Cole, Curtis, NE; Emily Merritt, Curtis, NE; Melissa (Matt) Daharsh, Firth, NE; Ryan (Tina) Cole, Peoria, AZ; Kristin Cole, Lincoln, NE; and Jason (Kinsey) Cole, Omaha, NE. 25 Great Grandchildren, and one Great Great grandchild.

Growing up Buzz had no close neighbors but entertained himself with his pet dogs, cats, pigeons, pet owl and his horse Beauty. He started school at the age of four riding his horse Beauty to school. His parents farmed, and after a severe winter in 1934 and battling grasshoppers in the summer of 1935 they gave up farming and moved to town where his dad worked as a mechanic and his mother took odd jobs. In town, Buzz started school with strangers, and quickly adopted a love for music and musical instruments. After school, his summers were filled with fishing, and exploring the Curtis Lake. In the fall and winter he hunted rabbits, quail, pheasants and trapped. Buzz went to High School at NSA in Curtis where his love for music and musical instruments led him to choir and band, where he played several variations of the Saxophone, playing in the Orchestra and band groups and solo competitions. After graduation, Buzz worked at the McCook Air Base as an Air Craft mechanic assistant. Buzz joined the Navy in 1944 at the age of 17, where he was trained as an electrician, acquiring the name Buzz, and was assigned to a 220' mine sweeper named the USS Heed, operating from Hawaii to Sasabo, Japan; Shanghai China; Amoy China Formosa and multiple Islands in the region. He maintained generators, battery strings and wiring on ship to support mine sweep op's. After his discharge, Buzz enrolled in the electrical program at Milford Trade School where he met and married Bonnie Jean Wilsey on December 4, 1948. His career as an electrician after trade school included a short stay in Curtis, Reliable Electric Co. in Denver and in 1966 back to Curtis where he became the Physical Plant Director and taught electrical and welding at UNSA until retirement. Buzz was a lifelong member of the Curtis Methodist Church, where singing in the choir was his passion. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. He received the Curtis Community Citizen of the Year award in 2013, on April 26, 2007 he married Mary Mitchell. Survivors include wife, Mary Cole of North Platte, NE; two sons, Steve (Linda) Cole of Curtis, NE; Nicholas Cole of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren, Kristi (John) Wetzel, Cairo, NE; Jeff (Jimi) Cole, Arnold, NE: Codi (Greg) Mortell, Susanville, CA; Stacy Cole and Mike Davis, Lincoln, NE; Jeremy (Dustie) Cole, Curtis, NE; Emily Merritt, Curtis, NE; Melissa (Matt) Daharsh, Firth, NE; Ryan (Tina) Cole, Peoria, AZ; Kristin Cole, Lincoln, NE; and Jason (Kinsey) Cole, Omaha, NE. 25 Great Grandchildren, and one Great Great grandchild.Mary’s family: David Mitchell and Tammie Pryer, Janet (Mike) Coder, Susan (Rudy) Garcia, Elizabeth (Dan) Corder, Frances (Darrel) Smith and Charla Werkmeister. 12 Grandchildren and 19 Great Grandchildren Buzz was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Bonnie Jean (Wilsey) Cole, June 2006, parents Wilford Lowell and Jessie Maye, daughters-in-law Marilyn and Kathy Cole and two great-grandchildren.
