NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A battle against cancer has nameless impacts on the patient and their family. From treatments to travel, cancer is an expensive battle to fight.

Deb Foote of North Platte has just begun her battle against Leukemia and a group of friends and family are organizing a benefit to help offset some of the expenses incurred by Deb and her husband Jeff, a Lieutenant with the North Platte Police Department.

On Jan. 29, a taco bar, bake sale, and silent auction will be held at the North Platte Moose Lodge, 1315 E. 4th St., with the proceeds going to Deb and Jeff. The Army of Angels hosts the bake sale and silent auction.

"When we first learned about it at the police department, Jeff and Deb were in Omaha and it sounded like they were going to be there for about five weeks at the time so we knew we needed to get something figured out quickly," said Investigator Lisa Citta with the North Platte Police Department.

Citta said the Army of Angels quickly volunteered to help with the benefit by organizing a bake sale and silent auction. The Army of Angels is a non-profit started by some local women who had a friend with cancer and continued to assist families battling the disease.

"The support from the community never ceases to amaze me," said Citta. "We have people calling the Department and reaching out to us on Facebook, it's just been amazing the amount of support this community continues to give to anyone impacted by something, which is really awesome."

The benefit will be a free-will donation, with all proceeds going to the Foote family.

🎧 Focus on 4H: Learn about Production Logs and other skills learned in 4H

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 29-Feb. 4, is an opportunity for North Platte residents to show their support of the North Platte Catholic Schools.

"Without the community support, so many of our schools would not be successful," said Gwen Covey with North Platte Catholic Schools.

While the students and staff will be celebrating all week long, there are several events that the public is invited to attend.

"Our Opening Ceremony will be on Monday, and that's at 9:45," said Covey. "The Mayor will come and he does a proclamation and our superintendent will speak."

The morning will also include something new and unique.

"We are going to have a glow-in-the-dark Rosary, and it's an all-school Rosary, so I think that is going to be really special," said Covey.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt will deliver Mass in the McGahan Activity Center at McDaid Elementary, the public is invited to attend, and Grandparents will be able to visit classrooms afterward.

"We're just doing a little special thank you for our grandparents," said Covey.

Wednesday evening will be an open enrollment meeting for parents of pre- K-12 students interested in enrolling their students at McDaid or St. Pats.

Also, the Annual Irish Fest Event will be held on Feb. 26. The fundraiser is an important part of the overall operations at the schools.

"It's really how our school system survives," said Wendy Dodson, Executive Director of the Catholic Schools Endowment. "We're a non-public school, so we don't receive any state or federal funding."

Dodson said a third of their budget comes from fundraisers.

"Our two parishes in town, St. Pats and Holy Spirit, they support us financially, our school families pay tuition, then the other third of that comes from fundraising efforts."

Irish Fest has been a staple of the community since 1975 when longtime Catholic Schools Administrator Bill McGahan started it.

"It was born out of necessity at that time," said Dodson. "They were looking for one more fundraiser, one more way to bring a revenue stream to the school, and it's been a tradition over the years."

Dodson said the event would feature good family fun, with a homemade meal, games, fun jumpz, a bake sale, a raffle, and a silent auction.

🎧 North Platte Catholic Schools prepare to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, Irish Fest

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-As the remnants of the record-breaking snowfall blanket the city, crews from the City of North Platte continue to dig out.

North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher is proud of the city employees who pitched in to plow, scoop and blow snow.

"We really appreciate all their dedication, they've been going almost 24/7 since early Wednesday morning, and they're going to continue that through the weekend to try to get the snow removed out of Downtown and some of the business areas," said Mayor Kelliher.

With 13.9 inches of snow, crews must get more creative to keep the city moving.

"When there's this much snow this quickly, you can't just shove it somewhere, you have to actually pick it up with machines and haul it," said Mayor Kelliher.

As usual, the areas around schools and the Emergency Snow Routes were the priority.

"The crews will get to what they can in the neighborhoods over the next several days, but realistically by the time we get some of the snow hauled away from the business districts and the main thoroughfares, it's going to be a little bit," said Mayor Kelliher.

About three years ago, the Emergency Snow Routes in the city were remapped by now-City Manager Layne Groseth.

"Layne and his crew redid where the Snow Routes are in the city," said Kelliher. "They plotted them specifically on major thoroughfares, but there's a few that you would consider not major thoroughfares that are on the Snow Route."

The main goal is access to emergency care.

"They did it that way so that no matter where you live in North Platte, you're no more than three blocks from a Snow Route," said Kelliher. "The theory being that it may not be easy to get out of your driveway or on the street, but you only have to go about three blocks and you can get where you need to go."

Kelliher said this ensures emergency personnel can continue providing services to residents.

"There are 251 miles of streets in North Platte, so it's kind of like a trip to Grand Island and back," said Mayor Kelliher. "In order to scoop all of those, it just takes time, and if we wanted to try to get rid of the snow in a day or two off all those streets, we would need to roughly quadruple our staff as well as the pieces of equipment that we have."

Mayor Kelliher said about 30 city employees are involved with snow removal. He said crews are roughly divided in half so they can run constantly. Mayor Kelliher said employees from all city departments have pitched in to help.

Mayor Kelliher said one of the things residents can do to help is to refrain from blowing or piling their snow in the streets, which causes more problems for drivers and city crews.

"Sometimes you can't avoid it, but if you can avoid it, please blow it up on your lawn, that's just that much less you have to water your lawn this Spring," said Mayor Kelliher.

Mayor Kelliher said the most important thing residents can do is be patient as the city works to get things cleared up.

Mayor Kelliher also joined Scotty on Good Morning North Platte to discuss snow removal and recap Tuesday's City Council meeting, which includes receiving a $1,000,000 grant to assist with the housing issue in the city. You can listen to that below.

Perkins County Fair will host Eli Young Band in July

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The Judd Hoos Band will rock the Sandhills Convention Center in North Platte on Jan. 21.

Judd Hoos is an independent, American-rock band from the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Since 2021, they have released a new EP, “Not Alone,” arranged the Nashville comes to the Black Hills: songwriting camp and hosted the 1st ever Judd Hoos Charity Jam. Judd Hoos also released 2 more new singles, "Bad Girl," "Lipstick Stain" and even appeared on NBC's American Song Contest with Snoop Dogg &amp; Kelly Clarkson.

In the past year, Judd Hoos appeared on multiple tour stops with Nashville rockers, The Wild Feathers, played close to 100 Midwest clubs, theaters, festivals and fairs, made their debut on the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Debut and even shared the stage with classic rock icon, Billy Idol.

In addition to recording new music, they have renewed a tour sponsorship deal with Remedy Brewing Company for the 2nd straight year and collaborated on their signature IPA, Hoos Joos.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-If you're in the mood for some live music and expanding your art skills, the Prairie Arts Center has you covered.

Rascal Martinez will bring the second floor of PAC alive with live music this Saturday.

Tickets for the event can be purchased online or at the door.

The show will start at 7:00 p.m., and tickets are $10, with proceeds benefitting PAC.

PAC will also be offering a couple of classes this month.

On Jan. 19, PAC will offer Mountains and Galaxy Painting with local artist Jess Hill.

"She'll teach different painting techniques, glazing, and you can bring kids into that one as well, so it's kind of fun," said Holly Carlini, Executive Director of PAC.

Then, on Jan. 31 PAC is offering Watercolor Cookies. Learn the fun skill of cookie decorating just in time for Valentine's Day. Learn techniques of flood filling, pushing watercolors, and dipping with instructor Sherri Stokey.

🎧 Prairie Arts Center offering classes in Jan., live music with Rascal on Saturday

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Things will be official for Miss Rodeo Nebraska Rebel Sjeklocha this Saturday.

The Coronation Gala for Sjeklocha will be held this Saturday at the D&amp;N Event Center in North Platte, with a social hour at 5:30 and the coronation and dinner at 6:30.

"Miss Rodeo Nebraska has a great relationship with the Buffalo Bill Rodeo here in town, but this is actually the first time in 12 years North Platte has hosted a Miss Rodeo Nebraska coronation," said Sjeklocha. "We're certainly excited to have the event here in town."

The event will feature live entertainment from the Cox Brothers.

Sjeklocha is from Hayes Center, and is the daughter of Susan Sjeklocha and Rusty Sjeklocha. Rebel is a recent graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She obtained a degree in Agricultural Communications with minors in Law and Business and the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program. At the University, Rebel was a member of various on-campus student organizations, including the Husker Equestrian Team and the UNL Rodeo Club.

When asked why she wanted to serve as Miss Rodeo Nebraska, Sjeklocha credited her background in agriculture and inspiration from a former queen.

"I grew up on a farm and cattle operation in Hayes Center and attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln, where I graduated last December with my degree in Agricultural Communication," said Sjeklocha. "But I met my first rodeo queen at the age of eight, Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2010 Michell Bosehart Whitson, so from the moment I met my first rodeo queen, I knew I wanted to be involved."

Sjkelocha will be busy as Miss Rodeo Nebraska.

"I was just looking at my calendar this morning, and it looks like, as of now, I'll be on the road 22 days out of the month of January," said Sjkelocha. "So it's going to be an action-packed year traveling across Nebraska to different rodeos, schools, and functions, but also all over the country."

Sjkelocha will compete at the Miss Rodeo America 2024 pageant at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December.

🎧Miss Rodeo Nebraska Coronation Gala this Saturday in North Platte

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Tuesday night's North Platte City Council meeting was dominated by discussion about a proposed RV park in the city.

A public hearing was held regarding action on a conditional use permit application by Merlin and Kelle Dikeman at 3501 S. Willow St. The RV park would consist of eight spots for campers, as well as an additional building the Dikemans would live in and run their existing business from.&nbsp;

Following a Dec. 27 meeting, the North Platte Planning Commission forwarded the application to the Council with a favorable recommendation.

After a motion by councilman Ty Lucas to approve the application, councilman Ed Rieker voiced concern with the verbiage in the city ordinance 156-312, pertaining to RV Parks.

Reiker proposed amendments to the conditional use permit to change the language of several application requirements, such as requirements for recreational areas, landscaping, and other items, that would not be cost-prohibitive to the Dikemans.&nbsp;

City Planning Administrator Judy Clark addressed the council and said Rieker's proposed amendments would require changes to the city code, an action that can only be taken by the Board of Adjustment.

Clark said the Dikemans essentially have two options, they can go through the process of having the ordinance changed, which could take time, or they could proceed with the application and appeal the requirements of the ordinance.

Councilman Mark Wood then spoke, saying the ordinance, which the Council approved in June, was not available online or in the Council handbooks.

"You're taking over the owner's business plan by sticking in all these things, and it is going to kill the business," said Wood. "When they tried to find out about this, they couldn't find this ordinance."

"They bought land and got ready to do it, but they didn't know about all this," said Wood.

Following further discussion, councilman Brad Garrick asked the Dikemans to approach the podium to answer questions.

"If we go back through the appropriate channels and through the process, is that going to create an undue burden on your timeline," Garrick asked.

The Dikemans said it without a doubt would.

"Here is my issue, how would you know if they have a year to get it on the books, you could buy the property and think this is going got work by what is published, then here you are with eight or 1o more stipulations," said Merlin.

Kelle Dikeman then distributed plans from Martin Buildings, in Madrid, to the Council.

"It's on hold and going through the financing process right now," said Kelle. "It's a very simple little design, it's the building, we want to live in our building, we restore cars, so we'll have storage for that and we'll have four campers that belong to us and rent out an additional four."

Kelle said they eventually have plans to add patios and other enhancements to the property.

The Dikemans biggest concern was with the verbiage of the ordinance.

"The requirements for a recreation building, it says and," said Kelle. "Now, that's a grammatical error, or is it not? If you say and, every single one of these has to go in if you say or you get to pick and choose."

Kelle said they have no problem complying with many of the requirements, but others will be prohibitive to their business plan.

"I don't mind putting in a horseshoe pit or a volleyball court," said Kelle. "But, when you're looking at a swingset there's insurance that goes along with that, and that's a high liability."

The Dikemans also said the cost of a professional site plan would be too high.

Council President Jim Nisley then pointed out that the ordinance does not state requirements but rather sets parameters in the event improvements are added to the property. This eventually led to a brief exchange between Nisley and Kelle Dikeman.

Councilman Wood suggested that this exchange only confirmed that the ordinance was vague and needed to be reviewed and adjusted.

Before voting on Rieker's amendments, councilman Pete Volz asked if a vote would even "hold water" since the Council did not have the authority to change ordinances.

This led to more conversation before the topic was tabled for clarification and review by the City Attorney.

🎧Discussion on North Platte RV park tabled at City Council meeting

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte photographer will be using his skills to help bring smiles to kids' faces this Christmas season.

Devin Alexander will be taking professional photos at Good Life on the Bricks on Dec. 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in exchange for new toys or monetary donations that will be given to families in need.

"This is kind of a win-win for people because I noticed it's kind of a trick for some people to book photo shoots," said Alexander. "So, this provides for people to help other families and get a photo shoot for themselves."

Alexander said he will offer shoots of singles, couples families, and more.

In exchange for the donation, customers will get three professionally edited photos.

"I'll edit three professionally and deliver them as quickly as I can," said Alexander.

"Just come in, hang around, get some photos, and spread the holiday cheer," said Alexander.

Jo Dee Messina coming to Buffalo County Fair in Kearney

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-With growth comes the need for room to grow, and that lack of room is on the mind of North Platte City Council members.

With the completion of Sustainable Beef, the Hershy Rail Park, District 177, and other economic development projects underway, now is the time to prepare for future growth.

"As our community grows because of the exciting economic development opportunities we have, we have a chance to do it the very best we can and make it go as smoothly for everyone," said Mayor Brandon Kelliher. "Are we going to get everything perfect, probably not, but if we don't try to do something to get things corrected, we're definitely going to have a large mess in our future."

At Tuesday's City Council meeting, the council renewed a contract with Marvin Consultants to update the city's current housing study at a cost of about $35,000.

"If we are going to apply for any grants at the state or federal level, you have to have a fairly recent housing study and fairly recent means within three years," said Mayor Kelliher.

Mayor Kelliher said the last study does not fall within that three-year window, prompting the need for an updated study.

Mayor Kelliher said the Council and the city will continue to work to avoid any future issues with housing.

Also, as last night's meeting, the North Platte Area Habitat for Humanity received approval to complete a project on lots at 2nd and McCabe Streets.

Mayor Kelliher said the approval will allow Habitat to construct a "neighborhood" of homes.

"One of the most exciting things that have happened in a long time has to do with Habitat being able to start creating an actual neighborhood," said Mayor Kelliher. "The thought is if they put these folks in neighborhoods that is relatively close to each other, they'll be able to help each other, and you get a real neighborhood environment.

Last night's approval will allow habitat to construct a road through the lots and 2nd and McCabe, doubling the number of homes that can be built.

Habitat received high praise from council member Ty Lucas and several other members.

Also, at last night's meeting, Shae Caldwell provided an update on the Parkade Plaza project, which was the recipient of Quality Growth Funds, and Gary Person gave an exciting update on the Hershey rail park.

The Council also authorized Lakeside Campground to construct storage units for recreational vehicles.
