Brady Public Schools is committed to providing services during closures caused by the COVID-19 Virus. In efforts to assist teachers in planning, Brady Public Schools conducted meetings and will continue to do so. SEATTLE (AP) — U.S. researchers gave the first shots in a first test of an experimental coronavirus vaccine Monday, leading off a worldwide hunt for protection even as the pandemic surges.

Three others were next in line for a test that will ultimately give 45 volunteers two doses, a month apart.

Neal Browning, 46, of Bothell, Washington, is a Microsoft network engineer who says his young daughters are proud he volunteered.

“Every parent wants their children to look up to them,” he said. But he’s told them not to brag to their friends. “It’s other people, too. It’s not just Dad out there.”

Monday’s milestone marked just the beginning of a series of studies in people needed to prove whether the shots are safe and could work. Even if the research goes well, a vaccine would not be available for widespread use for 12 to 18 months, said Dr. Anthony Fauci of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

The idea: The body will become a mini-factory, producing some harmless spike protein. When the immune system spots the foreign protein, it will make antibodies to attack — and be primed to react quickly if the person later encounters the real virus.

That’s a much faster way of producing a vaccine than the traditional approach of growing virus in the lab and preparing shots from either killed or weakened versions of it.

But because vaccines are given to millions of healthy people, it takes time to test them in large enough numbers to spot an uncommon side effect, cautioned Dr. Nelson Michael of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, which is developing a different vaccine candidate.

“The science can go very quickly but, first, do no harm, right?” he told reporters last week.

The Seattle research institute is part of a government network that tests all kinds of vaccines and was chosen for the coronavirus vaccine study before COVID-19 began spreading widely in Washington state.

 Coronavirus vaccine test opens with first doses

LINCOLN-As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state rises, the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) is sharing additional guidance on alternate learning environments, nutrition, and assessment. In all recommendations, the priority remains the safety and well-being of all students, educators, staff, and community members.

By Monday, March 23, the NDE recommends that all schools across the state move to an alternate learning structure with students no longer reporting to a traditional school setting, until further notice. School districts should work regionally by educational service unit to develop an orderly plan to transition to an alternate learning environment by Friday, March 20, unless told to close sooner. Schools should be prepared to operate in the alternate learning environment for six-eight weeks, with a review of operations every two weeks, including plans for re-opening.

Local school districts have been preparing for potential closures for weeks and many have already&nbsp;<a href="https://www.education.ne.gov/publichealth/known-school-closures/" target="_blank">implemented closures</a>&nbsp;to address recent presumed positive or confirmed cases of COVID-19. The NDE advises districts to continue student learning using available resources. The NDE Office of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment has compiled virtual educational resources that are available on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.education.ne.gov/educational-technology/e-learning-days/" target="_blank">e-Learning Days web page</a>, and will continue to add resources as they become available.

The NDE knows food insecurity for students who rely on school meals is a major concern when extended school closures become necessary. The NDE was granted approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for alternate meal service flexibility in the case of extended closures. This allows schools to serve students meals through USDA-approved meal service options, at approved sites within the community. All schools with a student population of more than 50 percent free and reduced priced lunch have the opportunity to provide meals through the Summer Food Service Program whether or not they have participated in the program. Those schools will first need to complete an&nbsp;<a href="https://nutrition.education.ne.gov/Splash.aspx" target="_blank">application and questionnaire</a>. Once approved, schools will be able to provide these meals to any student, regardless of their enrollment. Schools with a student population of less than 50 percent free and reduced priced lunch can provide meals to low-income students in their school on a limited basis through an application. Hershey Public Schools has been collaborating with West Central Health District, Nebraska Department of Education, the Governor’s Office and area schools during this unprecedented COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.&nbsp; This collaboration has included recommendations for continuing educational services for our students, monitoring the spread of the virus in our area, and making sound rational decisions.&nbsp; However, the information that we are receiving is changing so quickly that it makes decision-making and communication difficult.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this historic event.&nbsp;&nbsp; Hershey Public Schools is in session today, Monday, March 16th.&nbsp; We are announcing that we will be closed Tuesday, March 17 through Friday, March 27th.&nbsp; We are using today for teachers to meet with students and review with them what online or paper packet enrichment may look like at each grade level and subject level and in each course content.&nbsp; Students will clear out their desk or locker and bringing home their supplies and textbooks needed for enrichment along with any other personal belongings.

Our administrative team has been meeting often to consider what educational opportunities we might be able to provide students in the case of a long-term closure such as this. Wilson Public Library announces policy changes during virus outbreak

The National Junior College Athletic Association has cancelled all spring competition. The announcement ends the 2020 season for the North Platte Community College softball team.

“In light of the progressive evolvement of the COVID-19 situation, the NJCAA has decided to end all competition for the remainder of the academic year,” stated Dr. Christopher Parker, NJCAA President &amp; CEO. “As an association, the NJCAA exhausted all possible avenues to potentially postpone competition for both upcoming basketball championships and spring sport competition. We believe following the recommendations of the CDC is in the best interest of our member colleges and our student-athletes.”

Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play. Regarding eligibility for spring sports, no spring sport student-athlete who was enrolled at a member college in 2020 will be charged a year of participation.

NJCAA cancels all spring competition

LENEXA, Kan.-The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is releasing an expanded list of EPA-registered disinfectant products that have qualified for use against SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The list contains nearly 200 additional products—including 40 new products that went through the agency’s expedited review process. EPA expands COVID-19 disinfectant list, adding nearly 200 additional products

With the recent global pandemic declaration by the World Health Organization and the President of the United States involving COVID-19, the North Platte Public Library intends to take realistic, responsible steps to ensure our continued ability to provide library service for the City of North Platte and Lincoln County. Public safety and the safety of our staff are our number one priority. At the direction of Library Director, Cecelia Lawrence, the following steps are to be implemented immediately to protect our workforce and the public, while ensuring continuity of operations during this impending crisis.

1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All public meeting room use is suspended until further notice. Meeting Room Reservations will not be taken for meeting rooms until after April 20, 2020.

2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All Library programming is suspended and will resume when deemed appropriate.

3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The Technology Learning Resource Center (computer center) will be closed at 3PM today (March 16, 2020) and resume hours when deemed appropriate.

4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The Creation Station Makerspace lab will be closed and will resume hours when deemed appropriate.

5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay home if you are sick. Practice regular hand washing and cleaning. Do not touch your face.

The North Platte Public Library will remain open to serve the needs of the public to the best of our ability and we will continue our online presence, including the online catalog and online databases, as well as access to Overdrive and RBdigital for eBooks and downloadable audio books.

North Platte Public Library announces changes amid coronavirus outbreak

LINCOLN –&nbsp;This morning, Governor Pete Ricketts met with cabinet members at the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC, as he unveiled new guidance further limiting public events and gatherings. &nbsp;

“We are updating Nebraska’s guidance for closures and event sizes to align with new guidance issued by the CDC late yesterday,” said Governor Ricketts.

Updates to event size and closure guidance that are effective immediately include:

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Public events and gatherings are limited to 50 people or less statewide.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bars and restaurants will move to takeout only on a regional basis when:

o&nbsp;&nbsp;A second community transmission case is confirmed in the Omaha area.

o&nbsp;&nbsp;1-2 confirmed community transmission cases in Lincoln.

o&nbsp;&nbsp;1 confirmed community transmission case for other Nebraska communities and Nebraska’s Educational Service Units.

At present, one community transmission case has been reported in the state.

The role of the SEOC is to track cancellations and closures across the state, respond to any requests for assistance from local emergency managers, and develop a common operating picture to keep local officials aware of the evolving situation.

Gov. Ricketts further limits events, gatherings to prevent spread of COVID-19

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-North Platte's popular attraction, The Golden Spike Tower, has announced limited hours and some changes to their policies as the country continues its showdown with the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Executive Director Kirsten Parker made the following announcement:

I just wanted to touch base on any updates that we are learning with the ever-changing Corona Virus policy and procedure.

The CDC has recommended that any large groups of 50 or more, should be canceled. We will follow this recommendation. Therefore, large groups, field trips and events will be canceled for the next 8 weeks. This does include the Canteen Celebration, scheduled for April 1st and our annual Community Day, scheduled for May 3rd.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We are still planning on hosting North Platte Rail Days for August 7th-9th.&nbsp;

In addition, will also not allow more than 50 people in the building at one time, we are still in our “slow season” and with a decline in travel, are only, averaging 20-25 per day, and are able to keep up with the aggressive disinfectant policy we have established.

As a reminder, I encourage us all to be aware of our personal hygiene.

1. Don’t Touch Your Face: This virus enters through the eyes, nose, and throat. Therefore, you should stop touching your face. Use a tissue if you need to touch your face and discard promptly after use. We have extra tissue boxes available throughout the tower, should you need it.

2. Wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds and frequently, use hand sanitizer (alcohol-based) in between washings. We are fully stocked on foam hand was in our restrooms and have installed several hand sanitizer stations throughout the tower.

3. Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing. Use a tissue or into your elbow. If you are near someone, please move 6 feet away do so.

4. Allow for personal space. Please do not go in for a handshake, fist bump or hug. We also believe in keeping the recommended 3 feet, social distancing a priority with your visit.

5. Cleaning. We have an extensive disinfectant policy, that requires both hard surfaces and air be disinfected every 2 hours.

6. If you are sick, DO NOT ENTER. For the safety of our staff and our volunteers, who wish to still come to the tower, we ask you don’t take this lightly. If you have a fever or any flu-like symptoms, please do not plan a visit. This goes for our staff, volunteers, vendors and guests.

This is a time of unknown, and each day may be different than the last. We will do what is best for our staff, volunteers and guests however, we also strive to keep the doors open to be fiscally responsible for our business and community and have a desire to continue to provide the entertainment that joy, that is needed now, more than ever.
