Lincoln, NE – October 11, 2023 – The Powerball jackpot has been growing since July without a winner. Because of the high jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 35 consecutive Powerball drawings since July 22 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Wednesday, October 11 drawing to $1.725 billion or $756.6 million with the cash option selected. This is the 2nd largest jackpot in the history of the game.

This jackpot run has produced six big Powerball winners in Nebraska.

The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.04 billion jackpot.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

NORTH PLATTE - The Connection Homeless Shelter is hosting a fundraiser event called the Out of the Box Challenge. The shelter wants to invite local businesses, emergency personnel services, or just anyone who wants to form a team and take part in the challenge. The Connection Shelter would like to have business show off their boxes from November 13th-16th which is Hunger/Homeless Awareness Month. The final day of the event is November 16th at Brigham's Taproom where the teams can show off their box and have members vote for who has the best box. There is a registration fee of $200 per team.&nbsp;

The idea of the challenge is to grab a box and build a house out of it. The fundraiser event is to help raise money for the homeless shelter. There are dimension rules on the box which have to be 4x4x4. If you would like to learn more about the event, check out the podcast above. &nbsp;

Judith Basin County Sheriff's Office (Montana) Press Release

On October 2nd, 2023 at approximately 1632 hrs the Judith Basin County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to help locate a 35 year old male at his residence near Hobson, Montana. Upon arrival, deputies found the resident deceased inside his home. 

At the family's request, the Judith Basin County Sherriff's Office will not be releasing the victims name at this time.

Tyson Kolar (40) and Megan Fiechtner (33) were taken into custody at the scene. Kolar is charged with deliberate homicide. Fiechtner is charged with deliberate homicide by accountability and obstructing a peace office. Both parties are being held at the Fergus County Detention Center on Judith Basin County charges.

The Sheriff's office is very grateful to the following organizations for assistance: Montana Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Fergus County Sheriff's Office, Lewiston Police Department, and Montana Highway Patrol.&nbsp; More information will emerge as the investigation continues.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is encouraging everyone to review how they wash their hands. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps to take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean running water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

You should wash your hands any time they are visibly dirty, and in the following situations: before, during, and after preparing food, before eating food, before and after caring for someone who is sick, before and after treating a cut or wound, after using the bathroom, after blowing your nose, after coughing or sneezing into your hands, after touching an animal, after handling pet food or pet treats, and after touching garbage.

Here is a reminder of the most effective way to wash your hands:

1) Wet your hands with warm water and add soap.

2) Rub your hands together, making sure to scrub all areas, keeping hands out of the water.

3) Scrub for a minimum of 20 seconds or sing/hum the&nbsp;Happy Birthday&nbsp;song twice.

4) Rinse thoroughly, then dry your hands on a clean towel.

5) Turn the faucet off with the towel, not your hand, to avoid picking up germs again.

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to reduce the number of microbes on them in most situations. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. According to the CDC, hand sanitizers are not as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.

SWNPHD can provide free handwashing lessons for children in daycare, kindergarten, first, second, third, and fourth grade this fall. Good handwashing skills can reduce the spread of illness and lower absentee rates.

SWNPHD also provides free handwashing posters on their website at swhealth.ne.gov and handwashing stickers are available for bathroom mirrors by stopping in or calling.

Family Dollar is initiating a voluntary retail level product recall of certain over-the-counter drug products regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that were stored and shipped to certain stores on or around June 1, 2022 through March 31, 2023 due to product being stored by Family Dollar outside of labeled temperature requirements, according to a statement from the FDA.

WHAT:&nbsp;A 43-foot-tall Golden Spike, similar to those ceremonially used to complete the transcontinental railroad in 1869, has been commissioned by the Golden Spike Foundation to honor the tens of thousands of railroad workers who built the transcontinental railroad.&nbsp; The public art piece will begin its ceremonial journey across the United States - traveling from Kentucky to Utah along portions of the original railway route making a series of “whistle stops” along the way.&nbsp;

As the truck carrying the Golden Spike Monument rolls into cities and towns across America, events will be held in partnership with schools, railroad stations, and railroad museums to display the 7,000-pound public art piece and educate and inspire people to learn from the past and honor the memory of the thousands of workers who built the transcontinental railroad.&nbsp; Special educational displays and presentations and more will be part of the tour stops.&nbsp; For those lucky enough to spot it, the flatbed truck carrying the Monument will be emblazoned with information to follow it along on its “Driving of the Spike” route.

Next spring, the Monument will be touring the transcontinental railroad’s route from the west before it is permanently installed at the Golden Spike Park at Reeder Ranch, in Box Elder County, Utah.

These workers, many of whom were immigrants attracted by steady employment, did back-breaking work, made horrific sacrifices, and used ingenuity to make the railroad a reality.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Homecoming week at North Platte Community College will be Oct. 30 through Nov. 4. Festivities will include an alumni coffee, luncheon, tailgate and tours and men’s and women’s basketball games.

Open to the public activities will begin with a Knights women’s basketball game Nov. 3 against Laramie County Community College.

Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd. The game will be followed by a Knights men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. in the same location.

NPCC homecoming week will be Oct. 30-Nov. 4

Saturday, at approximately 12:50 a.m. MT, NSP was informed that a stolen Subaru Legacy had fled an attempted traffic stop in northeast Colorado. The vehicle was believed to have entered Nebraska. A trooper was able to locate the vehicle as it was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 near Ogallala. 

The Subaru exited I-80 at the Ogallala interchange and proceeding northbound into Ogallala. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver immediately accelerated and turned westbound onto Highway 26. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The Subaru fled westbound on Highway 26 with speeds in excess of 130 miles per hour. The vehicle continued until voluntarily coming to a stop between Lisco and Broadwater. The driver, Kage Anthony, 19, of North Platte, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine, theft by receiving stolen property $5,000+, and other charges.

 </figure>Cody Thomas - Nebraska State PatrolSaturday, at approximately 12:50 a.m. MT, NSP was informed that a stolen Subaru Legacy had fled an attempted traffic stop in northeast Colorado. The vehicle was believed to have entered Nebraska. A trooper was able to locate the vehicle as it was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 near Ogallala. The Subaru exited I-80 at the Ogallala interchange and proceeding northbound into Ogallala. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver immediately accelerated and turned westbound onto Highway 26. The trooper initiated a pursuit.The Subaru fled westbound on Highway 26 with speeds in excess of 130 miles per hour. The vehicle continued until voluntarily coming to a stop between Lisco and Broadwater. North Platte man arrested in the Panhandle after high speed pursuit

Jacob Tolstedt has been selected as North Platte Community College’s Business Student of the Month for October.

Tolstedt graduated from Alliance High School in 1996. He currently lives in North Platte and chose to attend NPCC because it’s in his hometown.

“I have been surprised at how accepting the faculty, staff and younger students are to an older student going back to school,” Tolstedt said of his experience so far. “Faculty in the business department have been very helpful in guiding me toward reaching my goals.”

Business instructor Cathy Nutt nominated Tolstedt for the Student of the Month recognition.

“Jake is an exemplary student who is a joy to have in class,” said Nutt. “He is always prepared, willing to answer and ask questions and appreciates the opportunity to get his education. Jake is a non-traditional student who manages a full-time job and a family and is an active Boy Scout leader. Yet, he still manages to excel in his coursework. It is that dedication and commitment that makes him stand out as an excellent choice for Business Student of the Month.”&nbsp;

Tolstedt is studying business administration at NPCC. He’s on track to graduate in the spring of 2025.

“I hope to use what I am learning at Mid-Plains to further my career with Murphy Tractor where I have worked as a diesel technician for the last 16 years,” said Tolstedt.

When not in class, Tolstedt enjoys spending time with his wife, Amanda, and serves as a Scout leader for Pack/Troop 292 - a role he has had for the past 12 years.

MPCC recognizes employees for full-time service

&nbsp;(North Platte, Neb.) — The Leota Street intersection is now open. Francis Street will be closed west of Jeffers Street beginning today, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

The west leg of the Jeffers and Francis Street intersection will be closed for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes during this time-period. The closure is expected to be in place for approximately one month.

Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. The closure is for installation of storm sewer, and construction of new concrete pavement at the Francis Street intersection.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Press Release On October 8, Lincoln County Deputies and North Platte Fire and Rescue were dispatched to an injury accident involving a motorcycle.&nbsp; Further information was that the motorcycle had crashed and exploded.&nbsp; The accident was near the 2700 block of North Airport Road.&nbsp; While enroute deputies were advised that there were two motorcycles involved in the crash.&nbsp;

When deputies arrived one driver had been transported and the second was receiving medical aid from EMS and was about to be transported.&nbsp; &nbsp;North Platte Fire was extinguishing the burning motorcycle and a small grass fire that was caused by the burning vehicle.&nbsp; Deputies could see debris from the crash scattered for nearly a ¼ mile to the south of the vehicles.&nbsp; Several witnesses and a video from a nearby house confirmed that the vehicles accelerated heavily after crossing the railroad tracks near highway 30.&nbsp;

For some reason the motorcycles contacted each other at a very high rate of speed and crashed.&nbsp; &nbsp;The drivers were identified as 23-year-old Travis Roberts and 21-year-old Trevin Jeffs, both of North Platte.&nbsp; When deputies arrived at the hospital, both drivers were heavily sedated and receiving emergency care.&nbsp; A test for alcohol was not possible.&nbsp; Both drivers have many broken bones, and one driver will likely lose his leg.&nbsp;
