October is designated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHSTA as Pedestrian safety month.  The North Platte Police Department wants to remind pedestrians to follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals.  If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic as close to the curb as possible. 

 Always keep alert, and don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes and ears off of the road.  Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections where drivers expect pedestrians.  Look for cars in all directions including those turning left or right. 

 Make eye contact with drivers as they approach to make sure you are seen.  Be visible by wearing bright colors during the day and reflective materials and use a flashlight at night, and watch for cars entering or leaving driveways and backing up in parking lots.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Laura Nokes, of McCook, is the winner of the 2023 North Platte Community College Foundation Auction House. She submitted the winning bid of $240,000&nbsp;–&nbsp;a record for the college.

Students in the college’s Building Construction, Electrical and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) Technology programs built the home from the ground up to gain hands-on, real-world experience.

The home was then sold via auction. Proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for students in the building trades.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Mid-Plains United Way Executive Director Haven Smith and Anegla Hipp, the Mentoring Coordinator at Community Connections. Smith recaps the FNBO Chili Cook-Off and gives us a more in-depth looking into Mid-Plains United Way. Hipp talks about the mentoring program at the Community Connections&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains United Way kicked off their 2023-2024 campaign with the 28th Annual FNBO Chili Cook-Off. For this year's event, over 240 people attended and almost $4,000 was raised. The event this year raised $500 more than last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mid-Plains United Way supports 11 non-profits and serves in a 16-county region. "The non-profits provide services and programs that improve education and health and finical stability for people in need," said Mid-Plains United Way Executive Director Haven Smith.&nbsp;

One of these organizations that is supported by the Mid-Plains United Way is Community Connections of Lincoln County. Community Connections is a non-profit that matches youths with mentors. Many of the youths will be matched up with mentors that have very similar skill sets.&nbsp;

Teammates is another program that matches youth with mentors. However, Community Connections has a slightly different approach than Teammates. "Well just that, you know (Teammates) school based, there meeting at the school at a set time each week. There are kids who need maybe some mentoring outside of the school," said Mentoring Coordinator Angela Hipp. "We think the relationship can really flourish when they are able to go do that."&nbsp;

Ogallala Public Schools announces homecoming King and Queen

(October 16, 2023) Lexington, Neb. – Former Dawson Public Power District Technology Integration and Security Specialist Robb Hanna has been promoted to Manager of Information Technology.

In his new role, Hanna will help Dawson PPD continue to provide quality service to customers while upholding the District's mission to provide reliable, low-cost power using effective technology.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Wendy Dodson about the upcoming 21st Annual G.R.E.E.N Event taking place on Saturday, October 21st.

NORTH PLATTE – The 21st annual G.R.E.E.N. fundraising event for the North Platte Catholic Schools is planned for Saturday, October 21st at St. Patrick High School. Generating Resources for Educational Excellence Now is the largest single event of the year for the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment Trust, which works year-round to generate around $600,000 for McDaid and St. Patrick’s schools.&nbsp; 

Endowment Director Wendy Dodson says that this year’s event will feature all of the things that supporters have loved about G.R.E.E.N. over the years… A delicious meal, an online silent auction, Heads or Tails game, Lucky Lotto drawing, live auction, and Spirit Wagon raffle. Plus, guests may also try their hand at the Wall of Wine and the Wall of Whiskey and enjoy some fun entertainment with the Polka Police.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dodson says that since the G.R.E.E.N. event began in 2003, it has generated over $2.1 million dollars in&nbsp; support of the North Platte Catholic Schools. These funds have been used to establish a teacher&nbsp; retirement fund, support general operations of McDaid and St. Patrick’s, fund school improvement&nbsp; projects and technology, and to provide tuition assistance for families.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The first round of classes begins in January, and students are encouraged to sign up early for any they plan to take.

A variety of formats are available to make pursuing a higher education convenient and accessible for both traditional and non-traditional students. On-site, online, distance learning and hybrid options are offered.

Mid-Plains also has a dual credit program that allows high school students to take classes that count toward both high school and college credits simultaneously.

LINCOLN — Eleven Nebraska nonprofits will get a piece of $4.87 million in state grants aimed at improving reading skills of elementary-age youths through mentoring programs.

The largest amount, $4.17 million, goes to TeamMates Mentoring, according to the Governor’s Office. TeamMates was founded in 1991 by former Husker coach and congressman Tom Osborne and his wife, Nancy.

State funding for the “<a target="_blank" href="https://opportunity.nebraska.gov/programs/business/read-nebraska/">READ Nebraska</a>” grants was approved by the Nebraska Legislature earlier this year, and a similar amount is allotted for a second year.&nbsp;

Gov. Jim Pillen and K.C. Belitz, director of the state Department of Economic Development, announced recipients this week.

Belitz said the investment should help students develop academic and relational skills to succeed in the workplace.

“Mentors also give kids a sense of belonging — increasing the likelihood they will remain connected to their community throughout their education and upon graduation,” he said. “In short, READ Nebraska is cultivating young leaders and encouraging their rootedness in Nebraska.”

DeMoine Adams, TeamMates CEO, said his organization has become “a movement” — serving nearly 7,000 students in 141 school districts across Nebraska — after starting with just 22 middle school students in Lincoln Public Schools.

“They say when much is given, much is required, and this grant will give TeamMates an incredible opportunity to recruit more mentors,” Adams said.

To be eligible, awardees had to be nonprofits in operation for at least 15 years and capable of providing a mentoring program aimed at elementary-age children.

Grant amounts were determined based on the number of mentors working with the respective organizations, a statement from the Governor’s Office said. The funds can be used to cover training, background checks, marketing, volunteer recruitment and other associated costs.

Applications for the second year funding are to be accepted<a target="_blank" href="https://opportunity.nebraska.gov/programs/business/read-nebraska/">&nbsp;starting next August.</a>

This year’s recipients represent various parts of the state.

“We are a small organization with a big mission — promoting the personal development of youth through positive one-on-one mentoring,” said Jalin Gerdes of The Friends Program of Kearney.

Brenna Poindexter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters in Central Nebraska said in a statement that the funds allow for increased outreach in counties such as Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick.

“Research proves over and over again that one unconditional and caring adult, outside of a child’s parents or guardians, changes the consequences of adverse experiences,” Poindexter said. “It is exciting to take this relationship a step further and add a focus on reading.”

Akile Banister said funding to the Omaha-based Banisters Leadership Academy would strengthen mentees in the organization’s statewide NightLife program. The CEO described the program as free character and leadership development offered at no cost to K-8 graders during weekend nights.

Nearly $5 million in state funds goes to mentoring programs aimed at improving kids’ reading skills

The McCook College Foundation and North Platte Community College Foundation are offering the public tips for including foundations in estates ahead of National Estate Planning Awareness Week Oct. 16 – 22.

The week-long recognition was adopted in 2008 to help individuals understand what estate planning is and why it is a vital component of financial wellness.&nbsp;

According to the McCook and NPCC Foundations, bequests are deductible for federal estate tax purposes, and there is no limit to the amount of the estate tax charitable deduction an estate can take. Bequests generally are not subject to state inheritance or estate taxes. In a large estate, the savings can be more than half the value of the bequest.

The easiest and lowest-cost way to make a deferred gift to a non-profit foundation is to include it in a will or revocable trust. A bequest can be made by creating a new will, adding a codicil to an existing will or including a foundation in a revocable trust.

Almost any kind of asset can be given through a bequest, including cash, securities, an interest in real estate - such as a residence, tangible personal property - such as works of art or antiques or the remainder of an IRA, qualified pension or profit-sharing plan.

It’s recommended that prospective donors consult an attorney about bequest options, such as residuary bequests, contingent bequests and testamentary trusts.

Gifts to the McCook/NPCC Foundations

Representatives from the McCook and NPCC Foundations are also available to provide additional information and work directly with their donors and their donors’ advisors.

Everyone who leaves a legacy to one of the college foundations is included in a planned giving society. The nature and size of gifts is kept confidential.

Bequests to the college have a tremendous impact. A wealth of opportunities for current and future college students can be made possible through a gift. Legacies could start an endowment to fund scholarships in a preferred department, help construct and renovate campus buildings or make many other things possible.

Each bequest contributes to the school’s financial strength and ability to meet the needs of its students, faculty and educational programs. The continuation of such a tradition of remembrance ensures the college’s financial strength and academic excellence for many generations to come.

Including the NPCC Foundation in her will was a no-brainer for Marilyn McGahan, the college’s former vice president.

“At the time my husband and I were updating our will, we decided we wanted to give back to the things that been an important part of our lives,” McGahan said. “I was associated with NPCC for about 40 years, so it was just natural to continue to support the college however I could.”

Her hope is that her bequest will help the college continue to grow and provide additional opportunities for students to further their education – whether that’s through scholarships or the addition of new resources or programs.

“I look at everything that’s happening on NPCC’s campuses – the expansion of the Health and Science Center, a new building for the electrical program, all the things that are going on to provide an education for people in our area – and it’s exciting,” McGahan said. “I want to be part of that future and part of the ability to enhance lives. I’ve gained so much from NPCC, and leaving a legacy is my way of showing that appreciation.”

Bequests generally are not subject to state inheritance or estate taxes. In a large estate, the savings can be more than half the value of the bequest.The easiest and lowest-cost way to make a deferred gift to a non-profit foundation is to include it in a will or revocable trust. McCook/NPCC Foundations offer tips on estate planning

Lincoln, NE –&nbsp;The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Medicaid and Long-Term Care (MLTC) will host the next Medicaid listening tour throughout October and November 2023 in communities around the state.

“The Listening Tour is a great way for us to hear from Medicaid members and providers. It is a way to learn about and determine necessary program changes, which will ensure Nebraskans live better lives," CEO Dr. Steve Corsi said.

During the “Navigating Medicaid: Exploring Updates and Changes to Health Plans, Coverage, and the Unwind" Listening Tour, Nebraska Medicaid will be announcing upcoming changes to the program and providing updates on the continuous coverage unwind. This Listening Tour will host 12 meetings in 10 cities throughout Nebraska, along with two virtual sessions.

On this tour, the MLTC team will share important updates coming to the program in 2024. More importantly, the meetings offer an opportunity for those in attendance to speak directly with the leadership from Nebraska's Medicaid program and the managed care organizations that will provide Medicaid services in 2024: Nebraska Total Care, UnitedHealthcare, and Molina Healthcare.

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen, along with Director K.C. Belitz of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED), have announced the recipients of the READ Nebraska grant program. The program is focused on expanding mentorships throughout the state, with the goal of improving reading proficiency among elementary school students.

“Mentorship creates meaningful and trusting relationships that have a lasting impact. Not every child needs a mentor, but every child certainly deserves one,” said Gov. Pillen “Learning how to read and write is the basis for all success in school. The READ Nebraska program is about connecting young kids with groups capable of facilitating that skill set.”

“Nebraska’s kids are our future entrepreneurs and business leaders,” said DED Director K.C. Belitz. “We’re investing in mentorships to help students develop the academic and relational skills needed to succeed in the workplace. Mentors also give kids a sense of belonging—increasing the likelihood they will remain connected to their community throughout their education and upon graduation.&nbsp; In short, READ Nebraska is cultivating young leaders and encouraging their rootedness in Nebraska.”

Under the guidelines of the program, all applicants must be nonprofits with at least 15 years of established operation in Nebraska. They must be able to provide a mentoring program aimed at elementary-age children and provide information relative to the number of youths served, associated costs, program successes and volunteer recruitment. Grants are awarded for a one-year period.

The Nebraska Legislature approved funding this year through LB814 for $4.8 million in FY2023-2024 and $4.8 million in FY2024-2025. Grant monies may be used to cover the cost of training, background checks, marketing, volunteer recruitment, program evaluation and other costs associated with the goals of READ Nebraska.

Eleven organizations received grants this program cycle. Amounts were determined pro rata based on the number of mentors working with the organization at the time of application. The list in alphabetical order includes:

DeMoine Adams, chief executive officer (CEO) of TeamMates Mentoring said his organization was humbled and honored to be among those receiving a grant.

“We are all focused on one common goal – and that’s to serve more students through mentoring. This mission, that started with just 22 middle school students in Lincoln Public Schools, has now become a movement, as we are currently serving almost 7,000 students in 141 school districts across the state of Nebraska,” noted Adams. “They say when much is given, much is required, and this grant will give TeamMates an incredible opportunity to recruit more mentors, so we can impact more students with HOPE, which is the greatest indicator of academic success.”

Executive Director Brenna Poindexter said funding would allow Big Brothers, Big Sisters in Central Nebraska to expand its current program offerings.

“Research proves over and over again that one unconditional and caring adult, outside of a child's parents or guardians, changes the consequences of adverse experiences. We are thrilled to be awarded a READ Nebraska grant,” said Poindexter. “This will allow us to connect more children in Hall, Hamilton, Howard, and Merrick counties with a caring adult. It is exciting to take this relationship a step further and add a focus on reading. We look forward to launching this program and impacting the lives of youth in our&nbsp;community.”&nbsp;

Gov. Pillen first announced his intention to create a mentoring program focused on childhood literacy upon declaring February&nbsp;Nebraska Mentoring Month.

“One of the ways we can lift our kids up to greatness is by becoming a mentor. My call to action is to anyone who is not currently a mentor, to become one,” said Gov. Pillen. “These organizations are a great place to start. There are also many others across the state which would welcome the involvement of people in their communities. The only requirement on your part is a willingness to show up. That alone will make a difference.”

“Mentoring has significant impacts, that will last across the mentee’s lifetime,” noted Dr. Tom Osborne. The former Husker coach and state congressman founded the TeamMates program with his wife Nancy in 1991. He joined other organization representatives in sharing the many benefits of mentoring.&nbsp;

“Mentees say they feel supported and report being more hopeful,” said Osborne.&nbsp; “The research shows a positive impact on graduation rates, interpersonal skills, family relationships, self-confidence and more. Multiply that impact across a classroom, a school, and a community – and we’re talking about something that truly makes a difference.”

The Prairie Arts Center says goodbye to three long time board members during their annual members meeting Tuesday October 10th.   Brenda Conell and Charlene Schneider each served six years on the Creativity Unlimited Arts Council Board at the Prairie Arts Center and Ken Hosmer, 10years. 

 Hosmer was also one of the founding members.  PAC also welcomed three new members to the board of directors including Heather Horn, Andrea Melius and Andrew Miller.

North Platte High School hosts Justo Lamas Concerts featuring Edgar René.&nbsp;&nbsp; After attending this program for several years at the Neville Center, Spanish teachers and administration decided a few years ago to host the concert program at the high school, opening their auditorium to area schools.

9 area schools and approximately 400 students and teachers will be attending this year’s concert entitled Levántate on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 from 10-11:30am in the Performing Arts Center.

Schools attending: Sutherland, Hershey, Brady, North Platte High School, St. Patricks, Sargent Schools, Sandhills High School, South Platte Schools and Ogallala High School.

The&nbsp;Justo Lamas Group Concert&nbsp;is an educational program with the primary objective of promoting the study of the Spanish language. With Edgar’s music and songs students are motivated to learn the language. During the entire 90 minute show, Edgar puts out all of his energy and talent earning the attention, respect and admiration of the students. They sing their hearts out during the songs they have learned in class. Edgar also uses this opportunity to deliver an affirmative life message that encourages students to live free of drugs and other addictions. He promotes unity and communication between students and their families. He encourages the audience not to give up when facing problems and to continue struggling to achieve their goals.

The&nbsp;Justo Lamas Group Concert&nbsp;is a unique program in which there is a lot of interaction between Edgar and the students. Besides being great entertainment in which the students will enjoy the incredible talent and dynamic personality of Edgar René, the concert is also a true extension of the classroom.

Two months before the show, we send promotion materials to local area schools.

Teachers that want to attend can make reservations through our website and request a free DVD and a CD to prepare their students with the concert songs.

Teachers who have already participated in a Justo concert with their students have observed how it has created interest and enthusiasm for the Spanish language.

The program lasts two hours. An hour and a half is for the concert itself and the rest of the time is for the students to meet Edgar personally.

They can talk to him, get his CDs, posters, photos, etc. which he will be happy to autograph.

The concert is made up of different styles of music: the kind listened to by modern young people of Latin America and also folk and traditional music.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Vaughn Fahrenbruck who is the senior pastor for the Rock Church in North Platte. The Rock Church is hosting a RocktoberFest this Saturday.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Rock Church in North Platte is hosting their annual RocktoberFest this Saturday beginning at 5:30 at the Rock Church. The event will have family friendly activities, chili and cinnamon rolls, live music, pumpkin painting, and so much more. The event is free for anyone to attend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This event initially started off as a chili cookoff before being switched to something fun and new. "It started out as a chili cookoff in our church, and we wanted to show North Platte how much we love our community," said Rock Church Senior Pastor Vaughn Fahrenbruck. "Were very for North Platte, very for our community and decide let's open it up to the entire city." The Rock Church wanted to find ways to expand their chili cookoff and get the community involved and that's how RocktoberFest was created. "We wanted to make it as a popup pumpkin patch and let's make it fun and let's make it free," said Vaughn.&nbsp;

Through decades of commitment and work by Rotary and our partners, more than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine.&nbsp; October is also Polio Awareness month, all proceeds from the Haunted House will go back to Polio Plus.
