Firefighters dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property. Sometimes that dedication is in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, in others it is many selfless years working in the industry. In all cases, it risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life.

International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is a time where the world’s community can recognize and honor the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions.

VALENTINE, Neb. — Visitors to Smith Falls State Park will enjoy many improvements to the grounds this summer, and they will soon be able to reserve a campsite to do so.

This marks the first year that Smith Falls campers are able to ensure a spot via the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s reservation system.

Amy Kucera, park superintendent, said half of the park’s 70 campsites will go live on the system at 9 a.m. CDT on May 10. She said a variety of sites will be available for reservation, including locations at the riverfront in both the east and west campgrounds. The other half are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All of the sites are categorized "basic."

Campsites may be reserved between three and 180 days in advance by visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://outdoornebraska.gov/reservations" target="_blank">outdoornebraska.gov/reservations</a>, at any time. Detailed campsite information is among the features of the online system that helps visitors plan their stay.

Reservations also may be made by calling 402-471-1414 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. CDT, Monday through Friday except state holidays.

Among the park’s improvements is a new $140,000 showerhouse that was funded by the Nebraska Outdoor Recreational Development Act. In addition, the park has received three new concrete latrines and a new deck around its headquarters.

The deck, which includes a boardwalk between the park’s campground and its office, is constructed of composite material. The $60,000 project was funded by the Game and Parks Capital Maintenance Fund.

The multitudes of visitors who access the park while floating the Niobrara River will enjoy improvements for increased convenience and safety at the highly popular Smith Falls Landing and the Nickols Landing at the east side of the park. Those projects were completed under a collaboration with the National Park Service and the Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa. The latter organization also has volunteered to improve the park’s Jim MacAllister Nature Trail in recent years.

Smith Falls State Park, which provides access to the park’s 63-foot waterfall via a footbridge over the Niobrara River, is located just off Highway 12 about 12 miles north-northeast of Valentine. A Nebraska Park Entry Permit is required for motorized vehicles entering the park.

Dr. Matthew Bruner, OB/GYN and Chief Medical Officer at Regional West Health Services based in Scottsbluff joined the regular Monday briefing to discuss COVID vaccines and answer questions from attendees. Bruner has been involved regionally and statewide in COVID response and addressed an array of misconceptions and information circulating.

One misconception has been commonly shared around the vaccine causing infertility.

“We’ve seen people into their second trimester who have received the vaccine prior to pregnancy. The concern has been debunked and this has been affirmed by reproductive endocrinologists,” said Dr. Bruner.

As a freedom-loving American, he believes people are able to make their own decisions, but those decisions involve the safety of the person and the safety of the population which is improved with vaccinations.

When asked about encouraging older people to get the vaccine, Dr. Bruner relayed the importance of weighing the risk and benefits. Some people find that 24-36 hours of potentially not feeling good is not worth it but what they don’t realize is this could keep them from having a very serious bout of COVID. Potential side effects are true with getting your shingles, whooping cough, and measles shots as well.

While he acknowledged the reluctance, he shared the importance of more people needing to get the COVID shot, or we must continue with social distancing and masking as it just prolongs the pandemic.

“The vaccines are safe and the ability of the vaccine to cover the disease is excellent. I encourage everybody to take the leap and get the vaccination. Finish the course, don’t skip it just with one [specific to a two-dose series]. Don’t be afraid of it, patients that we have seen recently in medical care have been unvaccinated individuals,” Dr. Bruner concluded.

Dr. Bruner: 'Don’t be afraid of it, the vaccines are safe,' more cases reported

Columbus – Spring is slowly creeping along, which means farmers and ranchers are gearing up for planting season. On the flip side, Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) urges caution in the fields when it comes to power lines and large farm equipment.

“We encourage the farming community to look up and around for powerlines,” said Scott Walz, NPPD Distribution and Transmission Maintenance Manager. “A year ago, we had a rash of contacts between equipment, primarily boom sprayers and power lines, during planting season. The contacts caused numerous power outages and fortunately no loss of life. Nevertheless, contact by with any equipment with a power line has the potential to damage the electronics in the unit.”

Walz recommends that after moving large equipment into the field, operators should review where the power lines are in relationship to their equipment. “After determining where the overhead lines are and making any adjustments to the equipment, in the case of boom sprayer, you can start to unrack the unit,” Walz pointed out. When operators complete their work, they should double-check the lines before re-racking the equipment.

“We want to keep the lights on,” Walz added, “but most importantly, we want farmers and their crews to go home safe every day.”

Contact with a powerline or even being within a few feet of the line with a piece of equipment can result in a dangerous, potentially fatal, situation. The first thing to do after making contact, or if a line falls on the equipment, is to call 911 and remain inside the vehicle as the line may still be energized. Law enforcement can contact NPPD or one of the many rural public power districts who will safely remove the lines and stabilize the situation.

In the event an individual is forced to leave the vehicle, jump as far away as possible from the equipment, making sure no body part touches the equipment and the ground at the same time. It is crucial to land standing with both feet together. The individual should then shuffle their feet, making sure to never break contact with the ground or cause separation between the feet. Do not attempt to return to the equipment and always wait for emergency responders and the power utility to respond.

Twelve organizations submitted grant applications totaling $96,536.97
for consideration at the North Platte / Lincoln County Visitors
Bureau Advisory Committee’s April meeting. While the events and
marketing activities included in the applications will occur in the
first quarter of the 2021/2022 fiscal year, lodging tax receipts for
the 2020/2021 fiscal year are down 30% from the previous year. The
looming uncertainty of the pandemic and the more infectious mutations
proliferating around the world necessitated very conservative awards
by the Advisory Committee 


The All In One Ticket promotion by
the partnership of the Golden Spike Tower, Buffalo Bill Ranch State
Recreation Area, the Lincoln County Historical Museum and the Cody
Park Railroad Museum encourages overnight stays with discounted
admission to all four attractions. This project will be funded by the
Visitors Bureau in the amount of $4,006.54 for promotion, ticket
printing and marketing materials.

In 2020 the North Platte Area Sports
Commission was able to host the first boxing tournament in the world
after the onset of the pandemic. The successful event serves as a
blueprint for other events worldwide on how to conduct a tournament
with no Covid-19 infections. This event returns to North Platte in
July of 2021 with the expectation of four times the number of
competitors. The event was awarded $4,330.93 in Sports Incentive
funds.

Col Cody’s Cruise will once again
welcome classic car aficionados to North Platte during the annual
September event, which was awarded $300.00 for promotion activities.

Sutherland’s Longhorn Bar will
host the Longhorn Musical Festival August 21 at the Sutherland Rodeo
Arena featuring Randy Houser, Mark Chesnutt and D.J. Bridwell. This
inaugural event of what is hoped to be an annual series was awarded
$2,625.00 for promotional activities.

After extending her reign for a year
due to the Covid-canceled Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Rodeo America
Pageants, Miss Rodeo Nebraska Joeli Walrath was awarded $1,750.00 for
the cost of a full-page ad in the Miss Rodeo America Pageant book.

North Platte Rail Days went virtual
in 2020 but will be a live event once again for 2021, complete with
railfan-favorite bus tours of Bailey Yard. To help get the word out
to rail fans that North Platte Rail Days is back, the event was
awarded $6,975.00 for promotional activities.

The Platte River Cruise Night kept
up community morale with numerous events in 2020. A more normal
schedule is planned for 2021 with a single annual event July 9 –
11. The event was awarded $6,748 to promote the event and to pay for
entertainment and appearance fees for television personalities who
will attend.

North Platte’s association with
Buffalo Bill and his commitment to preserving the Native American way
of life makes us the perfect location for a major Pow Wow. While the

Twelve organizations submitted grant applications totaling $96,536.97
for consideration at the North Platte / Lincoln County Visitors
Bureau Advisory Committee’s April meeting. While the events and
marketing activities included in the applications will occur in the
first quarter of the 2021/2022 fiscal year, lodging tax receipts for
the 2020/2021 fiscal year are down 30% from the previous year. The
looming uncertainty of the pandemic and the more infectious mutations
proliferating around the world necessitated very conservative awards
by the Advisory Committee 
The All In One Ticket promotion by
the partnership of the Golden Spike Tower, Buffalo Bill Ranch State
Recreation Area, the Lincoln County Historical Museum and the Cody
Park Railroad Museum encourages overnight stays with discounted
admission to all four attractions. This project will be funded by the
Visitors Bureau in the amount of $4,006.54 for promotion, ticket
printing and marketing materials.In 2020 the North Platte Area Sports
Commission was able to host the first boxing tournament in the world
after the onset of the pandemic. The successful event serves as a
blueprint for other events worldwide on how to conduct a tournament
with no Covid-19 infections. This event returns to North Platte in
July of 2021 with the expectation of four times the number of
competitors. The event was awarded $4,330.93 in Sports Incentive
funds.Col Cody’s Cruise will once again
welcome classic car aficionados to North Platte during the annual
September event, which was awarded $300.00 for promotion activities.Sutherland’s Longhorn Bar will
host the Longhorn Musical Festival August 21 at the Sutherland Rodeo
Arena featuring Randy Houser, Mark Chesnutt and D.J. Bridwell. This
inaugural event of what is hoped to be an annual series was awarded
$2,625.00 for promotional activities.After extending her reign for a year
due to the Covid-canceled Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Rodeo America
Pageants, Miss Rodeo Nebraska Joeli Walrath was awarded $1,750.00 for
the cost of a full-page ad in the Miss Rodeo America Pageant book.North Platte Rail Days went virtual
in 2020 but will be a live event once again for 2021, complete with
railfan-favorite bus tours of Bailey Yard. To help get the word out
to rail fans that North Platte Rail Days is back, the event was
awarded $6,975.00 for promotional activities.The Platte River Cruise Night kept
up community morale with numerous events in 2020. A more normal
schedule is planned for 2021 with a single annual event July 9 –
11. The event was awarded $6,748 to promote the event and to pay for
entertainment and appearance fees for television personalities who
will attend.North Platte’s association with
Buffalo Bill and his commitment to preserving the Native American way
of life makes us the perfect location for a major Pow Wow. While the

North Platte Visitors Bureau awards grants to 12 organizations

Mid-Plains Community College will recognize eight years’ worth of GED graduates this week.

A special ceremony is planned for 7 p.m. Thursday in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on the North Platte Community College South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

It will be the first ceremony of its kind since 2013.

“The GED test changed to computer-based testing in January of 2014 and along with that came a cease to releasing GED scores to area programs,” said Renee Miller, adult education program specialist for the college, regarding why the recognitions stopped. “We hosted a small GED graduation in Ogallala in 2017 recognizing students from just the MPCC Ogallala Campus that year, but there has not been a program-wide graduation since 2013.”

It’s important to Mid-Plains that the efforts of the graduates be celebrated, especially since GED tests are known for being challenging.

“The 2014 GED test was normed at a level that only 50 percent of graduating high school students could pass and, as such, is exceptionally difficult,” Miller said. “These students deserve recognition for accepting the task with open minds and seeing it through.”

To earn a GED, students must pass Science, Social Studies, Reasoning Through Language Arts and Math tests. Since 2014, more than 90 students have completed their GED with the assistance of the MPCC Adult Education Program.

“Students taking the GED test are from all walks of life and a variety of circumstances,” said Miller. “The GED serves as proof of skills completion for homeschooled individuals. Often, international students find that the GED is a quicker route than having their diplomas sent, translated and verified from their home countries. Many GED students juggle full-time jobs, children, lack of transportation, physical and/or mental health struggles and a general lack of support all while trying to complete four years’ worth of high school education in a condensed amount of time.”

Those who complete their GED are eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship, renewable for two years, to Mid-Plains to assist them in continuing their education.

“Individuals with a GED as their high school equivalency have the same opportunities for college and careers as high school graduates,” said Miller. “We are here to help make sure students have a smooth transition between Adult Education classes and college enrollment with the incorporation of the AE to MPCC initiative. For those who opt to go directly into the workforce as opposed to continuing their education, we partner with MPCC’s Career Services department to ensure career placement.”

MPCC’s GED graduation ceremony is open to the public. Guests will be required to wear masks and adhere to current social distancing protocols. The following graduates will be recognized.

SIDNEY, Neb.-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people following a pursuit and manhunt overnight near Big Springs.

At approximately 12:50 a.m. MT Monday, a trooper observed an eastbound Acura RL sedan speeding on Interstate 80 near Sunol at mile marker 67. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle accelerated and fled eastbound. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

During the pursuit, the trooper observed the two occupants of the vehicle throwing something out of the car, which was later recovered and found to be a handgun. The suspect vehicle reached speeds in excess of 130 miles per hour.

Near mile marker 95, a Deuel County Sheriff’s Deputy was able to successfully deploy spike strips to slow the vehicle. The vehicle eventually exited I-80 at Big Springs, at mile marker 107, where it came to a stop in a parking lot. The driver, Glen Zissi, 39, of St. Louis, Missouri, was taken into custody without further incident, but the passenger fled the scene on foot.

Troopers and deputies searched the area for more than an hour before the passenger, Alvin Washington, 32, of St. Louis, Missouri, was located by an NSP K9 and was then taken into custody.

Zissi was arrested for felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, tampering with physical evidence, and multiple outstanding warrants. Washington was arrested for tampering with physical evidence, obstructing a peace officer, and failure to obey a lawful order. Both have been lodged in Cheyenne County Jail.

Monthly Midwest economy survey index soars to all-time high

McCook native Garrett Nokes will be posthumously honored with a President’s Award at McCook Community College’s commencement ceremony May 7.

Nokes was a coach for the Mid-Plains Community College rodeo team from the fall of 2014 until his passing in February of this year. He made a tremendous impact on both the team and the college during that time.

“Garrett was so proud to be the rodeo coach for MPCC,” said Laura Nokes, Garrett’s wife. “He loved working in the arena and sharing his experience and his passion for the sport of rodeo. He was a fierce competitor, and he loved to compete, and he wanted his team to be just as competitive as he was both inside and outside of the arena. He was so proud of these student athletes and all they accomplished. I think the only other honor he had that meant more to him than being a coach, was being a dad and a husband.”

Garrett was instrumental in putting the college on the map at both the regional and national levels. The last season he coached for MPCC, the fall of 2020, Mid-Plains had the number one men’s team in the region and was sitting third on the national leaderboard. The college continues to lead the region heading into nationals.

Under Garrett’s watch, MPCC entered the past five College National Finals Rodeos either leading or ranking second in the regional men’s team standings. MPCC’s women’s teams finished in the top four regionally the past four years.

Altogether, Garrett helped a total of 26 MPCC Rodeo Team members qualify for the CNFR. Of those, seven led the region in their respective events.

Just a year ago, Garrett’s dedication to rodeo and support of its athletes earned him the title of Coach of the Year for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Great Plains Region.

The recognition was a tremendous honor - voted on by coaches and captains from every college rodeo team in the region at the end of the season.

“Garrett was one-of-a-kind,” said MPCC President Ryan Purdy. “The successes of the MPCC Rodeo Team over the past several years have been because of Garrett’s drive and determination to compete at a high level. He recruited great student-athletes who could balance the demands of being a good student and excellent competitors. He also recruited lots of volunteers to provide support assistance for practice, competitions and other special events. It was hard to tell Garrett, ‘No.’ His smile was ornery, his laugh was contagious and his heart was genuine. The MPCC Rodeo Team would not be what it is without Garrett Nokes.”

A lifetime of “the greatest sport on dirt”

Garrett did more than just advise the MPCC team – he led by example. He remained an active competitor throughout his life and accomplished more during his rodeo career than most could ever dream of.

Among his crowning achievements, Garrett finished fourth in the world at the 2005 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. More than a decade later, in 2017, he won the Ariat World Series of Team Roping in Las Vegas, Nev. – beating out more than 500 other teams for a spot in the final round.

His love for college rodeo ran deep – based partly on the success he had at that level. Garrett competed on Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s first two national championship teams. He placed third in the nation in the tie-down roping in 1997 and was the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Central Plains Regional Champion Steer Wrestler and All-Around Cowboy in ’98.

Locally, Garrett won the Nebraska State Rodeo Association’s “Rookie of the Year” title in 1996 and was the all-around champion in 2011 and 2014. He became the organization’s tie-down champion in 2011, ’13 and ’14.

Garrett also took home the Kansas Professional Rodeo Association’s titles of all-around champion in 1996, 2010, ’12 and ’14, steer wrestling champion in ’96 and tie-down roping champion in 2011, ’13 and ’14.

A member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 1996, Garrett went on to win all-around titles at numerous rodeos in that circuit as well. Those included the National Western Stock Show in Denver in 2005 and Cheyenne Frontier Days in ’06.

He was a three-time Prairie Circuit steer wrestling and all-around champion and was also tie-down roping champion in 2007.

Garrett earned the all-around title and was co-champion in the team roping, alongside Matt Wilken, at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte in 2012. He had previously won the tie-down roping at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in 1997 and steer wrestling there in ’98.

Altogether, Garrett had more than $740,000 in PRCA career earnings.

His family will receive the President’s Award on his behalf.

The commencement ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center in McCook. The ceremony is open to the public. Guests will be required to wear masks and adhere to current social distancing protocols.

A $1.2 million legal fund recently signed into law by Republican Gov. Mark Gordon would bankroll lawsuits against other states that block overseas exports of Wyoming coal and whose climate change regulations shut down Wyoming coal-fired power plants. 

A Gordon spokesman says the fund sends a message that Wyoming will protect its interests in court.

More and more residents and visitors are cooling off in the summer by
floating down the North Platte river. 

In an attempt to make the
recreation safer for the participants, the North Platte / Lincoln
County Visitors Bureau designed and installed an informational sign
at the North River Wildlife Management Area on North Hershey Road.

“Floating the river, whether in
kayaks, canoes, tanks or on tubes is becoming more popular,” said
Visitors Bureau Executive Director Lisa Burke. “Our goal in
creating this sign is to help people enjoy a day on the river more
safely, and to encourage them to be respectful of the landowners
adjacent to the river.”

The sign emphasizes that the minimum
float time in optimum conditions to the Buffalo Bill Ranch State
Recreation Area is six hours, and on to Cody Park is seven hours.
During a landowner meeting discussing a possible North Platte River
Water Trail in 2018, stories were related about floaters getting on
the river in the late afternoon not knowing how long the trip would
take and needing to be rescued. 


The sign also features a QR code
that, when scanned with a mobile phone links directly to the Central
Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District river data web page.
Information on the sign urges floaters not to get on the river if the
flow is less than 600 cfs (cubic feet per second) or more than 2,000
cfs.

Other information included on the
sign includes safety requirements, suggested items to include and a
list of wildlife that might be encountered on the trip.

Another sign located at the Muskrat
Run Wildlife Management Area lets floaters know that they have
traveled 5.5 miles and have 6.5 miles to go.

The Visitors Bureau worked with the
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for the information to include on
the sign, Maly Marketing to design the sign and Condon Signs to
fabricate and install the signs.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Four young women will be vying for the title of Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska.

Brylee Thompson-Reigning Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska

Brylee Thompson, of Hershey, is Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska 2019-2020.

Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska 2020, Brylee Thompson was crowned in North Platte in June 2019 after winning the horsemanship, appearance, personality, congeniality and photogenic categories of the MTRN Pageant.

Brylee is the 17-year-old daughter of Lucas Anderson and Hanna Mcconnell. Brylee calls Hershey Nebraska home where she grew up and continues to embrace her love for rodeo and agriculture.

Brylee is currently a junior at Hershey Public schools where she enjoys participating in National Honor Society, Student Council, and Future Business Leaders of America. Brylee plans to attend college and pursue a business degree to one day own her own business.

Brylee’s life goal is to always spread kindness and lift others up. She wants to be a person who focuses on the positive in every aspect of her life and to be known as someone who is compassionate and kind to everyone.

Brooke Lehr, hailing from Columbus, is the 16-year-old daughter of Lance and Joan Lehr. Brooke Lehr attends Scotus Central Catholic High School where she participates in volleyball, basketball, track and cheerleading. She loves to participate in rodeo whether it be queening or barrel racing. Brooke Lehr is an active member of Saint Isidore Catholic Church. In her spare time, she likes to Kayak, go four-wheeling and a good country music concert.

Himmelberg, of Lawrence, is the 15-year-old daughter of John and Cassandra Himmelberg. She attends Blue Hill High school as a freshman. Himmelberg is an avid dancer. She enjoys camping, fishing, playing violin, guitar and piano. She is an active member in many school activities and president of the freshman class.

Siwinski, from Central City is the 16-year-old daughter of Mike and Sherry Siwinski. She attends Palmer Public School. Siwinski is a 4-H ambassador and enjoys livestock and horse judging as well as horse quiz bowl. She likes to raise and show horses and participates in FFA, archery, band and track.

Troyer, from North Platte, is the 16-year-old daughter of Kyle Troyer and Yvette Troyer. She attends Hershey Public Schools where she participates in FBLA, One Act, Speech and Dance Team. Troyer is a member of 4-H and participates in the foster child program and their events. She attends and volunteers at church activities, loves board games and is also very competitive.

The North Platte City Council will hold a public hearing on the project at their Tuesday meeting, 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. Following the public hearing, the Council will take the first of three votes on approving financing for the project.&nbsp;

Developers give glimpse of the new North Platte Mall

For eight years, Ashley Bates-Crowley longed to hear her son say “mama” again. The last time she heard him say it, he was nearly 3 years old, and it was shortly before tubes were placed in his ears.<a></a>

“Josiah went from talking to not talking,” Bates-Crowley said.

She didn’t understand why her toddler quit speaking. She tried different things – even having the tubes removed from his ears. Things didn’t change. Just before Josiah “Joe” Crowley turned 4, he was diagnosed with nonverbal autism. Three years later, his twin brother, Jeriah, also was diagnosed.

The twins are now 10 years old and attend Quinter Elementary School, Quinter Unified School District 293. Finally, in January 2021, Joe said the word Bates-Crowley has been waiting to hear for so many years – mama.&nbsp;

“There are days that are tough,” she said. “But my children are my gifts. My children are my faith. I got that ‘mama’ back. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Tracie Betz, a special education teacher at Quinter Elementary School, first met the twins when they were 3. Jeriah is considered high-functioning and is in a regular classroom. Joe, while his language continues to grow, is minimally verbal and primarily learns in a special education classroom.

“Josiah is this ray of fun,” Betz said. “He is happy, smiling. He brings this joy to us – he can pull it out of us. Josiah opened my eyes to a whole new world of teaching. I have learned more from him than any other child. There have been some challenges because of the communication barrier. But he’s ready to learn.”

He loves to swing and is part of the track club. Joe enjoys riding his bike, writing and drawing. In fact, his mom has notebooks full of words and phrases Joe has written.

Jeriah also enjoys riding his bike and his hover board, and has participated in football and the school spelling bee – he was a fifth-grade spelling bee finalist.

“They are very close,” Bates-Crowley said of her sons.

They seek each other out after school and spend time playing together whenever they can.

Bates-Crowley and Betz have bonded during the past several years.

“Ashley and I have a great relationship that really facilitates learning for the boys,” Betz said. “I think she is such an advocate for her kids.”

For example, when Bates-Crowley found out after her twins were diagnosed that there weren’t a lot of services in northwest Kansas, she started to seek out services and find out how she could better help her boys. She even started an organization – Team Josiah 2K22 Foundation – to “focus on ensuring all individuals on the ASD spectrum have access to much-needed services and support in northwest Kansas.”

She has worked with the twins’ school to develop a sensory gym where there are numerous items – a tent, bean bag, swing, trampoline, exercise balls and fidget items - that can help calm a child.&nbsp;

“When I first got that diagnosis, I felt lonely,” Bates-Crowley said. “I felt very alone. I had no family close by. Being at Quinter school is one of the reasons I stay. It’s what the boys know. I want to see more inclusions in all communities for all children.”

So, she stays, and she continues to push for more services, more inclusion and more community acceptance.

“Their futures aren’t limited,” Bates-Crowley said of the twins. “I’m going to support them. I’m not going to limit what they can and can’t do. I’m not going to let a diagnosis limit them.”

For instance, the graduation rate at Florida International’s College of Business, where Li was dean, improved from 29% in 2017 to what is expected to be a 70% rate this year. Li is set to earn $430,000 a year.

This has been an exhausting year for moms. Last spring, we had no idea we would still be dealing with this pandemic a year later. It presented difficult decisions, such as in-person school or remote learning, how to work from home while caring for children, or how to pay the bills without work, when to let children visit their grandparents, what to do for birthdays and holidays. Regardless of the decision made, it seemed someone somewhere was judging our choice. But I want you to know, I see you every day doing the best you can.

To all the new moms, I see you when the OB floor was empty of friends and family to celebrate the new life you brought into the world. If you were COVID positive, I see you with your beaming smile behind a mask as you hold your new baby.

Mothers of toddlers, I see you trying to keep little fingers out of mouths as you teach them to wash their hands. I see you attempting to be professional on a Zoom meeting with toddlers giggling and playing in the background.

I see you moms of elementary and middle school children as you took on the role of teacher to keep your kids learning during the shutdown. I see you search for answers to big questions from your children about when things will be “normal” again.

I see you search for answers to big questions from your children about when things will be “normal” again.Mothers with high school children, I see you consoling your Juniors and Seniors who missed out on sports seasons, proms and graduation ceremonies that were altered, cut short, or cancelled. I see you advertising prom dresses for sale captioned “only worn once for pictures.”I see you moms of college age children, yes, they are still your babies, as they prepare to leave the nest for school or a job. This new world experience will not be the same as you remember, yet I see you helping to make the most of it.Grandmothers, I see you, too! You have two sets of babies to think about, your adult children and your grandchildren. I see you longing for their visits and hugs. And I see you when your family could not be with you in the hospital or nursing home.Moms, I see you for the force of nature you are as you nurture your family through this pandemic.
