Platte High School journalism won three gold medals at the 2021
Nebraska State Activities Assocation’s Class B State competition
held April 26 in Norfolk, Neb.

For
the first time, every student who competed in the State contest
earned a medal. The other student journalists’ rankings are as
follows:


Students
across Nebraska compete in 25 different categories that range from
writing and reporting, graphic design, newspaper and yearbook
production, and broadcasting. NPHS entered 21 of the 25 categories.

Due
to COVID restrictions, the students competed live on Monday, April
26, but had to wait until Friday to see their results. The awards

Students

News Release US Conference of Catholic Bishops

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Michael J. Sheridan, 76, from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Colorado Springs and has appointed Father James R. Golka, a priest of the Diocese of Grand Island as Bishop-elect of Colorado Springs. Bishop-elect Golka currently serves as rector of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Grand Island, Nebraska. The appointment was publicized in Washington, D.C. on April 30, 2021 by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Father Golka was born September 22, 1966 in Grand Island, Nebraska. He attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Theology (1985-1989). He served as a Jesuit lay missionary volunteer for the Native American Missions in South Dakota (1989-1990) before entering St. Paul Seminary in Minnesota where he received a Master of Divinity in 1994. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 3, 1994 for the Diocese of Grand Island.

Bishop-elect Golka’s assignments after ordination include: associate pastor at St. James parish in Kearney (1994-2000), associate pastor at Holy Rosary parish in Alliance (2000-2001); pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Scottsbluff (2001-2006); and pastor of St. Patrick’s parish and president of St. Patrick’s School in North Platte (2006-2016). Since 2016, he has served as rector of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Grand Island and vicar general since 2018.

Bishop-elect Golka’s pastoral ministry also includes service as a member of the diocesan College of Consultors, the Presbyteral Council, and the Personnel Board. He has also served as the director of Higher Ground, a diocesan summer retreat experience for youth, as well as a pilgrimage director for Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Bishop-elect Golka speaks both English and Spanish.

The Diocese of Colorado Springs is comprised of 15,493 square miles in the state of Colorado and has a total population of 1,169,053 of which 187,048 are Catholic.

Former North Platte priest appointed Bishop of Colorado Springs

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska state government will collect an extra $90 million in tax revenue in the current fiscal year that ends June 30 but will face a less rosy outlook over the following two years, based on new state estimates. 

The Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board on Friday lowered its revenue projections by $5 million over the following two budget years, starting on July 1. 

The new predictions will give lawmakers about $38 million more than expected in the current legislative session, after adjusting for requirements of state law. 

The projections will also trigger an automatic boost to a new state property tax credit program.

Great Plains Health announced today that it earned a four-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS created the five-star quality rating program as an easily accessible way for consumers to better understand the performance of their local hospital.

“Quality, patient safety and improved outcomes are top priorities for us at Great Plains Health,” said Barb Petersen, chief quality officer. “We are extremely proud to be awarded four stars by CMS. “This star rating is a reflection of the commitment and hard work of our medical staff and the entire team that fosters an environment focused on quality and safety.”

The overall rating, between one and five stars, summarizes a variety of measures across five areas of quality into a single star rating for each hospital. The five measure groups include:

The overall rating shows how well each hospital performed on an identified set of quality measures compared to other hospitals in the U.S. Five stars is the highest a hospital can achieve and, based on April 2021 results, includes only 13.56 percent of hospitals. The national average for hospitals is three out of five stars.

Of 4,586 hospitals in the nation, Great Plains Health is among the 988 that received a four-star rating, eighteen of which are in Nebraska.

Great Plains Health scored above the national average for Safety of Care. This group of measures includes prevention of central line blood stream infections, catheter infections, prevention of surgical site infections and other hospital related safety measures.

“North Platte has an incredible medical team here at Great Plains Health, engaged and focused on delivering safe, quality care,” said Mel McNea, chief executive officer. “Their achievement of a CMS four-star rating is evidence of their passion and drive to be among the best hospitals in the nation.”

DONIPHAN, Neb. – Zach Hinze of Republican River 4-H defeated Kahne Packer of 5 Clovers 4-H in a shoot-off to win the junior high competition in the 51st Cornhusker Trap Shoot on Thursday.

Hinze and Packer each had broken 97 of 100 clay targets at 16 yards earlier in the day at the Nebraska Trapshooting Association home grounds. In the shoot-off, Hinze hit all 25 targets, while Packer missed one.

Reilly Forsyth of La Vista Middle School won a shoot-off over Chole Hogan of Lincoln’s Scott Middle School to win the ladies’ competition. Norris 1 won the junior high team title while 5 Clovers 4-H won the 4-H team championship and Ashland 4-H 2 took the ladies’ team crown.

On Thursday, 835 junior high shooters competed.

On Friday, more than 1,400 senior high students are expected to shoot 75 rounds of 16-yard targets. They will shoot 75 handicap targets Saturday, and the combined scores of the two days will determine the overall champion, the Cornhusker Cup winner.

LINCOLN, Neb.-National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) sent a letter to Congress in support of robust funding for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). The LSC provides vital legal assistance to low-income Americans, including support for families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested four people following two separate pursuits Wednesday.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., a trooper attempted a traffic stop on a Ford Mustang for failing to stay in its lane near 72nd&nbsp;and Sorenson Parkway in Omaha. The vehicle fled and almost immediately struck a Ford Escape in a parking lot. The three occupants then fled on foot.

Troopers discovered that the Mustang had been reported stolen. Following a search of the area, with the assistance of the Omaha Police Department, the three male occupants of the vehicle were located without further incident. Stolen credits cards, stolen ID cards, drug paraphernalia, and a stolen handgun were located inside the vehicle.

The driver, Chit Lay, 22, and passengers Hsa Htoo, 35, and Ra Say, 23, all of Omaha, were arrested for multiple charges related to the incident, including theft by unlawful taking, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of drug paraphernalia, and other charges. All three were lodged in Douglas County Jail. The driver of the Escape was not injured.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., NSP received a report of a dangerous driver traveling westbound on Interstate 80 near York. A trooper was able to locate the vehicle and observed it driving down the middle of both lanes of westbound I-80, with its hazard lights activated. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, reaching speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour.

Another trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks near Wood River, which eventually brought the vehicle to a stop near mile marker 293. The driver then failed to cooperate with troopers’ commands to exit the vehicle. Troopers were eventually able to get the driver out of the vehicle and place her into custody. The pursuit lasted approximately 23 minutes.

The driver, Diane Hansen, 66, of Omaha, was arrested for willful reckless driving, felony flight to avoid arrest, obstructing a peace officer, and numerous traffic violations. She was lodged in Hall County Jail.

A bill that would increase state park entry fees for nonresidents advanced from general file April 29.

As introduced by Venango Sen. Dan Hughes,&nbsp;<a href="http://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/search_by_number.php?DocumentNumber=LB336&amp;Legislature=107th" target="_blank">LB336</a>&nbsp;would require the state Game and Parks Commission to create “regular” and “limited” annual and temporary nonresident motor vehicle permits.

Most of the additional revenue from the new permits would be designated to help defray operational, maintenance and improvement costs at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area and Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area.

A&nbsp;<a href="http://news.legislature.ne.gov/nat" target="_blank">Natural Resources Committee</a>&nbsp;amendment, adopted 35-0, instead would set the annual permit for a nonresident motor vehicle at twice the fee for a resident motor vehicle or $60, whichever is greater.

It would set the fee for a temporary permit for a nonresident motor vehicle at twice the fee for a resident motor vehicle or $12, whichever is greater.

The committee made the change after it became apparent that having two types of nonresident permits would have been a “logistical nightmare” for the commission, Hughes said. The original, higher proposed fees also would have resulted in the loss of certain federal funding, he said.

Hughes said Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala are among Nebraska’s top tourist attractions, drawing tens of thousands of out-of-state visitors on certain holiday weekends. The fee increase would allow the commission to hire additional law enforcement officers and build facilities that can handle the large number of visitors, he said.

The amendment, unlike the original bill, would not direct the commission to use the additional revenue for improvements at the two lakes, Hughes said, but the commission has indicated that it would.

Senators voted 37-0 to advance LB336 to select file.

Nonresidents may pay more for park permits in Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb.-Union Pacific announced that it is building a state-of-the-art grain transload facility within its Global IV intermodal terminal in Joliet, Illinois, that will reduce supply-chain costs for agricultural producers and processors. 

The Union Pacific Global IV Transload facility will be managed by JCT, which is a 50/50 joint venture between Consolidated Grain and Barge Co. and Gavilon Grain, LLC.

Union Pacific Global IV Transload will be open to all Midwest agricultural producers and processors, expanding connection opportunities to both empty containers and Union Pacific’s extensive West Coast port terminal network. 

Regional producers and processors will be able to transport their product by truck to Global IV, where it will be transloaded into intermodal marine containers for shipment by rail to West Coast ports, then loaded onto ocean carriers and shipped to overseas markets. 

The program will offer greater access to containers for exporters and faster turnaround times for ocean carriers and their containers. Construction began this month, with estimated completion by Q4 2021. Once fully operational, the terminal will have the capacity to process 50,000 containers per year.

“This facility will support the regional agriculture economy by providing reduced supply-chain costs and efficient loading support for exporting grain products, whole grains and oilseeds,” said Kari Kirchhoefer, Union Pacific Vice President – Marketing and Sales Premium. “By colocating on site at G4, we create greater efficiencies within the supply chain.”

Senators passed the measure through the last of three required votes, 43-3. 

The bill by Sen. John Cavanaugh, of Omaha, includes other tenant protections, such as requiring landlords to give at least 24 hours of notice before entering a tenant’s apartment. 

The bill was inspired by incidents in Nebraska where women left abusive partners but were forced by their landlord to keep paying rent while their partner remained in the apartment.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Those of us that grew up in North Platte without a doubt remember Lt. Rick Ryan of the North Platte Police Department. He was just one of those police officers you knew and remember.&nbsp;

Ryan passed away Tuesday in North Platte.

Ryan served and protected the city's citizens for 38 years, joining the force in 1971. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and the recipient of a Purple Heart during his service in Vietnam.

Ryan will be missed by many family and friends, as well as the community he served.

The North Platte Police Department issued the following statement.

"We are saddened by the loss of Rick Ryan, who passed away earlier this week. Rick joined the North Platte Police Department in 1971, where he worked for 38 years, before retiring in 2009. Rick retired with the rank of Lieutenant and touched many lives throughout his career and life. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rick's family during this difficult time."

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A man charged in a fatal stabbing in Rapid City previously spent years behind bars for killing someone with a baseball bat.

The North Platte Community College music department has honored four of its students for their accomplishments throughout the year.

Christopher Terry, of Grant; Lisa Pickett, of North Platte; Dylan Rogge, of Fairbury, and Alex McConnell, of Paxton, were recognized Wednesday night during the NPCC Spring Concert in the McDonald-Belton Theater.

Terry received the Musician of the Year award and was also presented with the Humanities and Social Sciences’ Division Award.

Pickett was selected as Vocalist of the Year. Rogge was chosen to be the Instrumentalist of the Year, and McConnell was named Community Member of the Year.

“Lisa, Alex, Chris and Dylan have surpassed my expectations in all that has been asked of them, both in the classroom and in rehearsal,” said Kristin Simpson, music instructor. “They are a reliable, energetic and cheerful group to work with, and I appreciate the time I have had with them. These awards couldn’t go to more deserving individuals.”

Private school tax credit proposal stalls in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – Hunters Helping the Hungry has received a $10,000 grant award from Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund to aid the program in helping Nebraskans in need.

These funds will be used to cover some deer processing costs, supplementing cash donations. Additional cash donations from individuals and businesses still are needed to bridge the gap between the desire by hunters to donate additional deer, and costs to process deer. Low HHH funds have required limiting deer donation since 2017.

The HHH program is funded solely by tax-deductible contributions. Each year the program invites deer processors to apply, and contracts with selected lockers to accept donated deer from hunters. The ground venison produced is distributed by charitable organizations to those in need.

Hunters Helping the Hungry receives Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund Grant

NebraskaLand National Bank celebrated the graduation of thirty students from the NebraskaLand University Scholarship Program.&nbsp; Graduates were awarded scholarships and certificates of completion on Monday.

The graduates, who completed the required attendance and coursework, were presented with certificates and $250 academic scholarships.&nbsp; Each student was required to complete all six classes in order to graduate and become eligible for the $250 scholarship.&nbsp; In addition, students were required to complete an essay that was judged by a Bank committee.&nbsp; The students with the highest scores were the recipients of a $1,000.00, $750.00, and $500.00 scholarships.&nbsp; The winners were:&nbsp;

1st&nbsp;Place $1,000, Hallie Sexson of North Platte High School

2nd&nbsp;Place $750, Trisha Bernt of Stapleton Public School

3rd&nbsp;Place $500, Trinity Hansen of Stapleton Public School

All remaining graduates each received a $250 scholarship for successful completion of the program:

In total, the Bank has awarded approximately $61,500.00 in academic scholarships since the program began in 2014-2015.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-One of the most noticeable victims of the pandemic was North Platte's movie theater.

As residents continued with their lives, it felt strange not to have a movie theater. No popcorn buckets, no midnight showings, no movies on the big screen.

Golden Ticket Cinemas has announced that they will soon be opening a location in North Platte.

A source tells the Post that the theater will be located at the North Platte Mall, and final plans will likely depend on the mall redevelopment project getting the go-ahead. The North Platte City Council will hear a first reading of the plan, which was approved by the Planning Commission last night, at the May 18 meeting.

Golden Ticket offers a luxury theater experience often only found in larger cities and operates in small to mid-size communities.

In addition to luxury seating, the theaters offer a full dine-in experience with a variety of sandwiches, burgers, pizza, and wings, along with beverage options for kids and adults. The traditional theater goodies are also available.

While no official date has been announced, the plan is to open sometime in 2021.

Golden Ticket has locations in Kearney and Scottsbluff, as well as in Minnesota, South Dakota, North Carolina, Mississippi, Montana, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, and Kentucky.
