NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Two North Platte men were arrested after law enforcement discovered narcotics and a handgun during a traffic stop.

According to North Platte police,&nbsp;On September 15, 2020, at 4:16 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of 4th and Jeffers Streets. 

Police say officers made contact with the driver, 27-year-old Jacob Orr, and the passenger, 29-year-old Timothy Johnson.

 A State Patrol K9 assisted with the stop and alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.  Officers subsequently conducted a search of the vehicle. 

Police say, during the search, officers located a concealed .9mm handgun and several prescription pills. 

Furthermore, police say it was discovered that Johnson is also a convicted felon. 

 Johnson was placed under arrest on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, carrying a concealed weapon, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.  Orr was placed under arrest on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon- 2nd offense and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.  Orr was also cited for Failure to Use Turn Signal. 

 Both subjects were incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center

Pair of North Platte men arrested after drugs, gun found during traffic stop

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-North Platte police used surveillance footage to identify the suspect in a recent stabbing in North Platte.

According to police, on September 10, 2020, at 3:33 a.m., officers responded to a stabbing in the 1500 Block of East 4th Street. 

Police say, upon arrival, officers located a male victim who was bleeding and had an injury to his arm.  Officers made contact with several individuals in the area but were unable to gather any information on who was involved. 

 Officers were able to obtain security footage of the incident and 33-year-old Pedro Hernandez Jr was established as the suspect. 

Police say, during the investigation, probable cause was established to arrest Hernandez on suspicion of 1st-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. 

 On September 15, 2020, officers located Hernandez in the 1100 Block of South Dewey.  Hernandez was placed under arrest without incident and incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center. 

 The victim was transported by North Platte EMS to Great Plains Health with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Auditions will be from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 22. Because of COVID-19, they will be conducted via Microsoft Teams or through another online communications platform arranged through theater instructor Ritch Galvan.

Actors and actresses of all ages are needed. No previous acting experience is required.

The production will feature short plays from the Theatre of the Absurd. They will include works from Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Edward Albee, Eugène Ionesco and others.

Rehearsals will begin Sept. 28. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29-30.

and students the opportunity to learn more about Community
Connections youth programs, complete the application for their
program, and obtain materials relevant for the 2020-21 youth program
season. 


Each
student who attends the sign-up event and completes an application
will receive a free large pizza voucher from Domino’s pizza and a
popcorn goody bag.

program for students in grades 6th

for success. The Assets Team is for students in grades 6-8th.

Great Plains Health Neurosurgeon, W. Lee Warren, MD and the surgical team performed the first brain surgeries at Great Plains Health.

The team performed two different procedures on two different patients that, prior to now, would have had to travel outside of the region to receive this type of care. Both patient outcomes were positive.

"This is the reason my wife, Lisa, and I moved to North Platte, and the reason our entire team all moved their families here. We saw the vision of bringing brain and modern spine surgery to the people of this area,” said W. Lee Warren, MD. “The hospital could have left the trauma and brain surgeries to the bigger cities, but the leadership connected with us and agreed that this area deserved 21st-century neurosurgery services.”

The GPHealth surgery team for these procedures included W. Lee Warren, MD, Star Bartlett-Rone, PA-C, two scrub tech/nurses, a circulating nurse, a nurse anesthetist and an anesthesiologist.

The equipment used to complete the surgeries is specialized for neurosurgery procedures, includes the first Aesculap 3D robotic surgical microscope that has ever been delivered in the world. This microscope assists the surgical team by providing precise robotic-assisted movements and 4K 3D and high-definition imaging.&nbsp;

“It is very exciting to be able to offer neurosurgery at Great Plains Health,” said Rayan Moore, director of perioperative services. “Previously this type of surgery meant significant travel time for patients. Dr. Warren and the surgery team have absolutely the best and latest equipment and have focused on every detail in preparing this service for patients in our region,” said Moore.

Great Plains Health performs first brain surgeries

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man was seriously injured after a vehicle struck the motorized bicycle he was riding.

According to North Platte Police,&nbsp;On September 14, 2020, at 3:25 p.m., officers and the North Platte Fire Department, responded to an injury accident involving a pedestrian near 10th and Jeffers Streets. 

 Upon arrival, police say officers learned that the pedestrian that was hit had fled the area but they located him nearby. 

Police say after the investigation, officers determined that a Red 2015 Ford Sedan, driven by Dawn Mockaitis, was traveling northbound on Jeffers street when Ronald Ware attempted to cross the street, eastbound, on a motorized bicycle. 

 Mockaitis' vehicle collided with Ware in the intersection. 

 Ware was transported to Great Plains Health with serious injuries, his current condition is unknown.

LINCOLN, Neb.-The Nebraska Public Service Commission has issued an order&nbsp;dismissing the Transportation Department complaint (DC-98) against the Union PacificRailroad Company (UPRR) and Nebraska Central Railroad Company (NCRC).

In June, the PSC issued an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nebraska.gov/psc/orders/tran/2020-06-30%20PI-228%20Order%20Closing%20Investigation.pdf" target="_blank">Order</a>&nbsp;releasing its findings from its February hearing and closing the investigation into the blocking of railroad crossings in Hall County and directed the PSCTransportation Department to file a formal complaint against UPRR, NCRC, and BNSF. Today’saction by the Commission dismisses the complaint (DC-98) against UPRR &amp; NCRC.

“Our goal through this process was to find a workable solution to the problem of blocked crossings and we intend to keep a close watch to assure the solution is long term,” said commission Chair Mary Ridder. “By working together UPRR &amp; NCRC have found a way to keep these crossings open. We appreciate their efforts and believe this new process will provide long-awaited relief to the citizens who need to safely cross to their places of work, school, and family.”

The two railroads (UPRR &amp; NCRC) have agreed on a plan as to how they will handle their trains, so they are not blocking crossings. The section of track affected is between Saint PaulRoad and Sky Park Road, Airport Road east to past 4th&nbsp;Street East.

A departmental complaint (DC-97) filed against Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) remains ongoing.

Commissioner Ridder said, “We hope to be able to come to a workable solution with BNSF as well.&nbsp;With&nbsp;<a href="https://oli.org/about-us/public-awareness-campaigns/rail-safety-week" target="_blank">Rail Safety Week</a>&nbsp;coming up we remind everyone that the safety of our citizens is of utmost importance and we encourage anyone who may encounter problems to contact our transportation department.”

Complaints against Union Pacific, Nebraska Central Railroad dismissed

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man who was wanted on a warrant may face additional weapons charges.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office issued the following statement:

On September 15, 2020, at 7:20 a.m., Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies received information a subject with a warrant for his arrest was in the area of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in North Platte, NE. Deputies responded to the area and located forty-six-year-old North Platte resident Eugene Richter. Mr. Richter was arrested on the warrant for “Stalking” and handcuffed.

During a search of his person Deputies located a concealed .9mm pistol and several magazines. Mr.&nbsp;Richter was in the church at the time of his arrest and this is a prohibited act. He also did not have an active concealed carry permit. Additionally, Mr. Richter has an active protection order against him, which prohibits him from having a firearm. Mr. Richter was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and incarcerated for the following charges: Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon in a Prohibited Place, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and Possession of a Firearm during a Felony.

Deputies developed information Mr. Richter may have additional firearms and weapons at his residence. Deputies were issued a search warrant for Mr. Richter’s residence. Deputies executed the search warrant 11:50 a.m. on September 15, 2020. Numerous firearms and concealed weapons were located in Mr. Richter’s home and vehicles. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges will follow.

Deputies responded to the area and located forty-six-year-old North Platte resident Eugene Richter. Mr. Richter was arrested on the warrant for “Stalking” and handcuffed.<figure>

 </figure>During a search of his person Deputies located a concealed .9mm pistol and several magazines. Mr.&nbsp;Richter was in the church at the time of his arrest and this is a prohibited act. He also did not have an active concealed carry permit. Additionally, Mr. Richter has an active protection order against him, which prohibits him from having a firearm. Mr. Richter was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and incarcerated for the following charges: Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon in a Prohibited Place, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and Possession of a Firearm during a Felony.Deputies developed information Mr. Richter may have additional firearms and weapons at his residence. Deputies were issued a search warrant for Mr. Richter’s residence. Deputies executed the search warrant 11:50 a.m. on September 15, 2020. Numerous firearms and concealed weapons were located in Mr. Richter’s home and vehicles. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges will follow.

National Reptile Awareness Day art contest begins

Keep your catch of fish as fresh as possible and you will be rewarded with a wonderful meal that is the finale to a fishing trip. In mid-October, trout will be stocked across Nebraska in small city park ponds and state park lakes.

These pan-sized fish offer a person the delicious main course of a meal. From the lake to the table, every step is critical in making the best of what nature has given you.

Fish are a perishable food product and the quality of the meal is only as good as the handling of the fish after the catch. If practical, fish can be kept alive until just before cleaning. The best method is to keep them as cold as possible, as soon as possible. If you know you are going to be keeping fish, take along a cooler with ice and place them in it immediately after catching.

A 10-inch rainbow trout is one of the easiest fish to prepare for the pan. It is not necessary, nor advisable to skin or filet a small trout, as they have delicate flesh that is best kept whole. The method is simply to remove the internal organs and gills, and then wash.

Do this by making an incision along the belly from the vent to the gills, and disposing of the entrails. The gills may take a little more cutting to release them from the head. The head can be left on or removed depending on the diner’s sensibility. Notice a dark area inside and along the spine of the fish. This is the fish’s kidney and can be removed by gently rubbing while washing. It does not change the cooked product if left in the fish.

There are two easy methods for cooking trout:

Pan fry&nbsp;– Dredge in a mixture of flour, salt, pepper and seasoning of choice. Fry about 3 to 5 minutes per side in a quarter inch of medium hot oil. Use spatula to turn the fish gently. When done, place on a platter to rest for a few minutes before serving.

Bake&nbsp;– Wrap in foil and cook on the grill or in the oven. This allows each fish to be seasoned to the particular desires of the diner. Oil is necessary to keep the fish moist; use butter, olive or vegetable oil; just a splash will do. Spices can be delicate such as rosemary and parsley, or bold such as Cajun and curry, but remember that a little goes a long way. To add flavor and edible ingredients, include sliced onions, garlic cloves, capers, or artichoke hearts.

Seal this foil packet and bake on the grill grates or in the oven on a baking sheet for 10 to 15 minutes (350 degrees). Serve after resting for a few minutes and then placing each packet in front of the diner on a plate. Open carefully to release the steam and aroma.

A trout meal is best served with rice, vegetables and the stories of how they were caught.

Kept fresh, trout make easy, tasty meal

In Nebraska, our goal is to be the most welcoming state in the country for veterans and military families.&nbsp; Our servicemen and women make tremendous sacrifices to protect our freedoms. &nbsp;While we can never fully repay their service, we can shape state law and policy to better serve their needs.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

When they return to civilian life, veterans continue to give and serve to benefit their communities.&nbsp; We’ve seen that spirit of volunteerism on display once again in 2020.&nbsp; American Legions across the state have stepped up to host blood drives as part of our nation’s response to coronavirus.&nbsp; When it was safe to do so, the Legion sponsored baseball and softball leagues so that kids in Nebraska could reconnect with their friends and have fun playing together.&nbsp; These are just a couple of the countless ways veterans continue to serve Nebraska following active duty.&nbsp; Veterans and military families are some of the most dedicated, patriotic citizens in our society.&nbsp; We want more of them to make their home here in the Good Life.

This year, we’ve taken great strides toward our goal of becoming the best state in America for veterans.

Veterans Tax Relief:&nbsp;On August 17, 2020, I signed LB 153 into law. &nbsp;LB 153 exempts 50 percent of military retirement benefit income from state income taxation. &nbsp;Introduced by Senator Tom Brewer, and prioritized by Senator John Lowe, LB 153 moved through three rounds of voting without a single vote in opposition.&nbsp; That’s a testament to the deep respect Nebraskans have for the women and men who serve in our military.&nbsp;&nbsp;Passing LB 153 keeps us competitive with surrounding states that offer tax relief on military retirement pay. &nbsp;

Support for Veteran and Military Caregivers:&nbsp;This week, I proclaimed Nebraska as a “Hidden Heroes” state to recognize the men and women serving as caregivers for our military members and veterans.&nbsp; Over 5.5 million Americans serve as military caregivers.&nbsp; These spouses, parents, children, and other loved ones provide vital, ongoing support to veterans who are ill or injured.&nbsp; These frontline caregivers are critically important to our veterans’ well-being, and they deserve our recognition, thanks, and support.

One of these hidden heroes, Andrea Dorsey, lives in Omaha. &nbsp;Her husband, Joe, received a Purple Heart after being injured by an IED explosion while serving in Iraq in 2004.&nbsp; The trauma of the IED explosion has caused Joe to have chronic physical pain in his neck and back. &nbsp;It’s also left some of the invisible scars that so many of our brave men and women carry home from the battlefield.&nbsp; As a caregiver, Andrea gives emotional support to Joe, while also tirelessly searching for resources to best help him cope with the wounds he sustained in Iraq.&nbsp; She has also worked as a teacher and is a mom to two boys.&nbsp; Andrea’s advocacy on behalf of military caregivers inspired us to take action to become a Hidden Heroes state.&nbsp; In this capacity, we’ll be holding an annual observance to recognize the state’s military and veteran caregivers.&nbsp; We’ve designated a point person at the Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NDVA) to offer assistance to caregivers who need support.&nbsp; The NDVA has also created a webpage (<a href="https://veterans.nebraska.gov/hiddenheroes" target="_blank">veterans.nebraska.gov/hiddenheroes</a>) to raise awareness of the Hidden Heroes in Nebraska and to help them to connect with one another and to available resources.&nbsp;

Welcome Home Packet:&nbsp;Each year, between 800 and 1,100 Nebraskans discharge from military service. &nbsp;I send a letter to welcome them back to our state.&nbsp; In the letter, I encourage them to seek out their county veteran service officer or to contact NDVA’s State Service Office to learn about benefits, services, and other resources available to them. &nbsp;NDVA has developed a new Welcome Home packet to accompany my letter.&nbsp; It includes information on the wide range of Nebraska benefits available to veterans, a guide to getting federal benefits, and more. &nbsp;The welcome packet is another way we’re being more customer-focused, and bringing the information directly to our state’s newest veterans.

Website Enhancements:&nbsp;NDVA has made significant improvements to its website this year to make it easier to navigate.&nbsp; The new&nbsp;<a href="https://veterans.nebraska.gov/hiddenheroes" target="_blank">veterans.nebraska.gov</a>&nbsp;has a suite of employment tools in the Nebraska Veterans’ Gateway.&nbsp; Interactive maps help connect veterans with their county veteran service offices and showcase the behavioral and mental health resources available across the state.&nbsp; NDVA also added a live chat feature to the website in May so that veterans and their families can connect with an accredited state service officer virtually rather than having to make an in-person visit.&nbsp; This is a tremendously helpful feature at a time when many of our veterans are trying to limit social interactions to reduce risk of exposure to coronavirus.

Connecting Veterans &amp; Military Families to Job Opportunities:&nbsp;One of our biggest areas of focus over the past couple years has been&nbsp;giving our military families access to more job opportunities. &nbsp;We expanded the hiring preference for the State of Nebraska to include spouses of service members.&nbsp; I signed a regulation to allow military spouses to receive a three-year teaching permit in Nebraska with a valid out-of-state license.&nbsp; We provided reciprocity for military spouses all over the country by updating language for adoption of the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact, which allows nurses to have one multi-state license.&nbsp; Additionally, I worked with the Legislature on a law authorizing the Department of Health and Human Services to issue temporary licenses to military spouses working in occupations regulated under the Uniform Credentialing Act.&nbsp;

The West Central District Health Department reports two mosquito
pools in Lincoln county testing positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).
The end of the summer season (August to September) is the most likely
time of the year that positive West Nile samples are collected and
reported. 


According to the
Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NE DHHS), human WNV
infections follow in the wake of positive mosquito pools, with a peak
around Labor Day and disappearing around mid-September.

Symptoms of West
Nile illness are usually mild, including fever, headache, body aches,
fatigue, skin rash on the trunk of the body, swollen lymph glands,
and eye pain. However, the symptoms may be more severe, sometimes
causing permanent neurological damage, and in some cases may result
in death. 


West Central
District Health Department recommends that people avoid being outside
at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active and to protect
themselves from mosquito bites by wearing lightweight protective
clothing (including long-sleeved shirts and long pants) and by using
an insect repellent containing DEET, IR3535, Oil of Eucalyptus or
Picaridin. 


Residents are
encouraged to frequently drain containers and other standing or
stagnant water around their homes to disrupt the breeding cycle of
mosquitoes. 


For the current
2020 WNV season, surveillance began in May and will continue through
the end of September. Weekly WNV reports can be found by visiting the

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - BNSF's pick to be its next CEO will be the first woman to lead a major North American railroad.

BNSF said Monday that it will promote Kathryn Farmer in January to replace retiring President and CEO Carl Ice. Farmer currently oversees operations at BNSF and has been with the railroad for 28 years.

Farmer has held a variety of leadership positions at the railroad owned by Warren Buffett's conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway. The Association of American Railroads trade group said Farmer will be the first female top executive at one of the biggest North American railroads.

"We look forward to Katie's leadership and more success. She possesses all of the qualities that make us excited about the future," Buffett said.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based railroad operates 32,500 miles of track in 28 western states. It is one of the largest subsidiaries of Berkshire Hathaway, which also owns more than 90 other insurance, utility, manufacturing and retail businesses. The Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate also has major investments in such companies as Apple, Bank of America, Coca-Cola and American Express,

(DENVER, Colorado) – Food allergies are on the rise, with more than&nbsp;<a href="https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/142/6/e20181235">five million</a>&nbsp;children,&nbsp;about two kids in every school classroom, now suffering from&nbsp;allergy to&nbsp;at least one food. Researchers at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaljewish.org/home">National Jewish Health</a>&nbsp;are working to discover what is responsible for this increase and have determined that many allergic conditions likely start with dry, cracked skin, which leads to a chain reaction of allergic diseases known as the atopic march. It begins in infancy with eczema and leads to food allergies, asthma and hay fever later in childhood. Now, their latest study reveals that the time of year a baby is born may be a risk factor for the atopic march.

“We looked at every child treated in our clinic, and those born in the fall were much more likely to experience all of the conditions associated with the atopic march,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaljewish.org/doctors-departments/providers/physicians/jessica-hui">Jessica Hui, MD</a>, a pediatrician at National Jewish Health and lead author of the study. “Now we are learning more about why that is and we strongly believe it stems from the bacteria on the skin on how they affect the skin barrier.”

Children with eczema often have&nbsp;high levels of a harmful bacteria called staph aureus&nbsp;on their skin, which weakens the skin’s ability to keep out allergens and pathogens.&nbsp;

“When food particles are able to penetrate the skin rather than being digested, the body sees them as foreign and creates antibodies against them, which causes the child to become allergic,”&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Hui said.

Researchers are now conducting a clinical trial to look at a wide variety of factors that may contribute to this weakened skin barrier in babies. They’re enrolling pregnant women and following their babies into early childhood to consider everything from environmental factors to genetics to medications taken and products used in the home. They hope that this will not only help explain why babies born in the fall are at greater risk, but will also help develop solutions to stop the atopic march in its tracks.

“We think if we can intervene at a very young age, even right after the baby’s out of the womb, then potentially that’s a way for us to try to stop the development of this atopic march,”&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Hui said.

Other potential solutions to prevent the atopic march is sealing the skin barriers of babies with eczema using wet wraps and lotions and introducing allergenic food early in life for kids at risk.

"A big shout-out to Lincoln County Sheriff Jerome Kramer! It came to my attention today that when so-called "peaceful protesters" flew into North Platte he met them at the airport and escorted them back onto the plane. He told them we didn't need them here. Yes! Too bad these other cities don't have the guts and integrity to do the same thing. Kudos Sheriff Kramer."

The Post reached out to LCSO and officials say this incident did not happen. It is unclear why the post was made.

According to WCDHD four cases are community spread, one case is a close contact and 11 cases are under investigation.

After further investigation, one case previously identified as a resident of the WCDHD jurisdiction was transferred to the appropriate health department.

WCDHD reports 16 new positive COVID cases in Lincoln County

OMAHA, Neb.-United States Attorney Joe Kelly announced that Justin Zambrowski, 44, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Rachael Wasserburger, 24, of Box Elder, South Dakota, were sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Laurie Smith Camp for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of a mixture of methamphetamine. Zambrowski was sentenced to 60 months in prison, and Wasserburger was sentenced to 65 months in prison. There is no parole in the federal system. Upon their release from prison, they will each serve four years of supervised release.

On March 20, 2019, law enforcement was dispatched to County Road 14 in Banner County, Nebraska, after receiving a call about two people sleeping in a car. The parties were identified as Justin Zambrowski and Rachael Wasserburger. Law enforcement received permission to search the vehicle and located 75 grams of methamphetamine.

This case was investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol.

KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney continues to climb U.S. News and World Report’s annual “Best Colleges” lists, reaching its highest ranking ever.

UNK is No. 6 on the publication’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/regional-universities-midwest/top-public">list of the top public regional universities in the Midwest</a>, up three spots from last year.

This is the 13th straight year UNK has been recognized as a top public regional university in the Midwest, and the sixth time the school has been ranked inside the Top 10. No other Nebraska school cracked the Top 25 on this year’s list, which was released Monday.

“The magazine’s rankings have come to be observed and respected as a comprehensive evaluation of quality. The placement at sixth among regional public universities is the highest achieved by this institution, and is cause for celebration and reflection on the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s competitive advantage,” said Chancellor Doug Kristensen. “More importantly, that measurement helps validate what UNK faculty, staff and students have been telling others: that real quality and affordability are indeed the UNK experience.”

Among all Midwest regional universities – both public and private – UNK improved its position from 46th to 33rd, ranking ahead of institutions such as Wayne State College, Chadron State College, Peru State College, Bellevue University, Concordia University, Midland University, Northwest Missouri State University, Fort Hays State University, Emporia State University, Pittsburg State University, Missouri Western State University and University of Central Missouri.

Kristensen said the peer comparisons provide an opportunity to demonstrate performance among similar colleges and universities.

UNK was also listed as a “best value school,” ranking 11th among Midwest regional universities. That lists looks at total cost minus grants, and the percentage of students receiving need-based grants. UNK’s average annual cost after grants was $20,011 in 2019, according to the assessment.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people after locating multiple controlled substances and a firearm during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 near Sutherland.

At approximately 9:40 p.m. Sunday, troopers observed an eastbound Kia Optima traveling at 101 miles per hour on I-80 near mile marker 152. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed 970 pills of suspected ecstasy, four pounds of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a loaded handgun.

The driver, Jabreel Castleberry, 22, of Kentwood, Michigan, and passenger, Nyesha Gill Johnson, 19, of Wyoming, Michigan, were both arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana – more than one pound, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Castleberry was additionally cited for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

The driver of the car, Erica Morgan, 19, of Gibbon, died at the scene of the crash, according to the Custer County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said the driver and a passenger in the semi were taken to a Broken Bow hospital with injuries. Their medical conditions had not been released by Monday.

Gibbon woman killed in 2-vehicle crash in Custer County

Under the Federal Lifeline Program, consumers who participate in certain public assistance and veterans programs or qualify based on income can receive a discount of up to $9.25 per month off an eligible phone, broadband, or bundled phone/broadband service.  

The PSC’s Nebraska Telephone Assistance Program (NTAP)/Lifeline Program helps qualified Nebraskans by providing an additional $3.50 each month, towards a voice phone service or bundled phone/broadband service.  

Commissioner Ridder said, “Data shows that in Nebraska we have 195,244 eligible households, yet only two-percent or 4,335 are enrolled in the Lifeline Program. We would encourage anyone who might qualify, to explore these programs as a potential option to assist them with their voice and broadband needs.”

September 14-18 proclaimed Lifeline Awareness Week

Mid-Plains Community College has begun the fall semester with four new instructors. They are: Jeff Holthus, Kelley Cole, Sean Tossi and Kristin Simpson.

Jeff Holthus arrived at Mid-Plains following a career change. MPCC’s new first-year welding instructor in McCook taught health and physical education for McCook Public Schools for six years and also coached four sports.

“I decided to take a different route that would provide more flexibility for my family,” Holthus said. “I’m originally from McCook, but both of my grandparents were dairy and hog farmers in Kansas, so I’ve been around welding for quite a few years and always had an interest in it.”

Holthus graduated from the McCook welding program last year after working part-time as the program’s welding lab technician.

“It has been a fun process to see things from the student perspective and now that of an instructor,” Holthus said. “I’m able to take a lot of things that I learned last year and implement them. I’m looking forward to building up the program and working with students who want to go into welding. The students are here because they want to be here, and because of that, they are pretty dedicated.”

Holthus is especially excited about the opportunity to introduce local high school students to the field through a collaboration with McCook High School.

“We work with about a dozen high school students on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” Holthus said. “Getting that experience early on is so valuable to them. They will be so far ahead in an industry where the demand is higher than ever. A lot of the older welders are retiring, and those jobs need to be replenished. It’s very important that we, as instructors, sell that fact and make sure these students know the sky is the limit as far as opportunities.”

MPCC’s new diesel technology instructor in North Platte is also an alum of the college.

Kelley Cole is originally from Dodge City, Kan. He spent much of his life working in banking before deciding to try something a little more hands-on. He found an opportunity through the Service Technician Sponsorship program offered by Titan Machinery.

“The company paid for all of my diesel technician training and tools,” Cole said. “I worked for them for four years in return. That’s part of the reason I chose to attend Mid-Plains. My wife and I had been living in Wichita and were looking for a smaller community. Titan has a store in North Platte, so by moving here, I was able to work and go to school at the same time.”

Cole graduated from the college’s Diesel Technology program in 2014. While he enjoyed the work, he eventually found that he needed a job that was more flexible for his growing family.

“Teaching has allowed me that flexibility while still enabling me to stay in a field I’ve come to love,” Cole said. “I’m looking forward to putting my own spin on the program and helping others learn. Diesel technology is a very important industry. A lot of people depend on technicians to keep their equipment running, which is why there are so many opportunities for those trained in this particular skill set. The trucking and agriculture industries won’t be going anywhere any time soon.”

A career in the Aerospace/Defense Industry had him living all over the country – from California to Washington, D.C. – and doing everything from contracts, negotiations and logistics to project and supply chain management.

Prior to moving to North Platte, Tossi was living in the town where he was born and raised, Clarks Summit, Pa.

“I was teaching at a two-year technical college, but was looking for a new opportunity,” Tossi said. “MPCC impressed me from the get-go because of the wide variety of programs it offers and, specifically in the business department, the diverse set of courses available. I’m a big believer in the community college system. I truly believe community colleges are the backbone of our country.”

It’s a profession that came naturally to him – his father is a professor who teaches mechanical engineering classes at Penn State University.“Ever since I was a young child, I would go into my father’s classrooms and watch him,” Tossi said. “I knew right off the bat that I wanted to do that someday. I love the learning process – the transfer of knowledge and seeing the excitement on students’ faces when they grasp something new.”He’s already had the opportunity to be a part of that with the start of fall classes at MPCC, and he’s excited for even more student interaction.“I want to help students identify what their future career interests are, and for those who already have an idea of what they want to do, I want to help them solidify their goals,” Tossi said. “Whether that’s continuing on with their education or going into the industry, I’m looking forward to being part of that next step for them.”Kristin Simpson<figure>

 </figure>Kristin Simpson is no stranger to Mid-Plains Community College. She has served as an adjunct instructor in North Platte for about three years and was also the interim music instructor last spring.<a>Originally from Lincoln, she attended grad school at the University of Nebraska Omaha where she obtained a Master of Music degree with an emphasis in violin performance.</a>She and her husband, Dr. Jonathan Simpson, moved to North Platte 12 years ago, and Kristin soon began looking for ways to be involved musically in the community.“Music has always been a part of my life,” Kristin said. “I began piano lessons at age 7 and my great grandmother started me on violin before fifth grade. I was involved in choir and orchestra all through grade school, then have either accompanied or sung since then. I’ve taught choir, been in the pit and taken voice lessons.”Kristin joined the North Platte Community College choir for fun and subsequently decided to try out for the select choir as well. Eventually, she became the accompanist for both choirs and for vocal lessons. In the spring of 2018, she began teaching for the college as an adjunct instructor.“I think teaching chose me,” Kristin said. “It just came naturally and was a real source of joy. I love to show and teach and display. The more I learn about music, the more exciting it becomes, and I want to share that with people. Performing is great, but teaching is where I really light up - where I become who I really am.”Her goal is not just to promote the music department, but to promote the college’s entire Associate of Fine Arts degree program.“I’m excited to watch the program grow and am looking forward to collaborating with the art and theater instructors,” Kristin said. “I think we have something special, and I can’t wait to share that with the world.”
