NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Mid-Plains Community College will reopen to the public July 15.

All MPCC campuses – those in McCook, North Platte, Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine – closed to the public March 30 to limit exposure to COVID-19. When the campuses reopen, they will do so with new safeguards in place.

Under the new protocol, visitors will be required to wear face masks before entering college facilities. Once inside, they must check in at the Welcome Centers or front desks. There, they will go through a screening process, during which, visitors will be asked to provide identification and a phone number.

Students with student IDs will continue to be screened in class. All students without IDs will be screened at the Welcome Centers or front desks.&nbsp;

Upon successful completion of the screening, visitors will be provided with a dated and initialed sticker to be worn in a visible location so others in the building know they have been screened.&nbsp;

MPCC will continue to adhere to the gathering limits outlined in the governor’s Directed Health Measures. The college will also continue to encourage employees and the public to wash hands often, maintain social distancing and stay home if sick.

MPCC outlines precautions for reopening to the public

State figures showed Nebraska still has a large amount of space in hospitals to treat new patients., with 41% of Nebraska's hospital beds, 45% of the intensive care beds and 80% of the ventilators in the state available Tuesday morning.

garden and farming indoors during the summer months is easier than
you think, according to Mackenzie Taylor, associate professor of
Biology at Creighton University.

“There
is a garden for every budget. An easy way to start is with herbs like
basil or rosemary,” Taylor said. “They grow well in pots that can
be placed both indoors and outdoors, and they don’t take up a lot
of space. If tended appropriately, herbs produce over long periods of
time, including the winter. The more use you get from a plant, the
more economical 
it is.”

Maximizing
your gardening space in the summer is crucial to make households more
sustainable and economical. There also are plenty of low maintenance
plants, such as herbs, fruits and vegetables, that can be harvested
to add a colorful variety to any healthy diet.

Access
to plants that are economically friendly is among the top reasons
people begin gardening. However, some may 
not have the tools or
time to fully indulge in the summer activity. Taylor suggests buying
in your community to fuel 
local economies and help the
environment.

“Purchasing
locally grown produce from a farmers’ market is usually best, as it
supports the local economy and reduces the environmental impacts that
come from transport,” Taylor said. “Many grocery stores also
indicate when a product is local, and a manager can help you identify
them. In addition, try to buy in-season produce because it often
doesn’t travel as far. Buy produce that is not packaged in plastic
and, when possible, utilize reusable bags to carry your produce
home.” 


According
to Blue
and Green Tomorrow,
replacing 20% of the food you purchase from the store with food from
your garden can reduce your carbon footprint by 68 pounds of carbon
dioxide each year. To make an impact, Taylor suggests starting small.

The
more plants you have, the more time consuming it can be to monitor,
water, manage pests and harvest during the summer. If your backyard
has a nice, sunny spot for a few plants, you can get started on
building a garden space. If you don’t have much room for your
garden, Taylor suggests planting in pots to maximize space indoors or

drainage and are fairly deep,” Taylor said. “Generally, plants
need four to eight hours of sunshine. If you don’t have a

Some common garden plants include peppers, tomatoes, carrots, beans,

Creighton University biologist explains how sustainable summer gardening gives back 

North Platte, Neb. –&nbsp; North Platte Public Schools (NPPS) releases our 2020 – 2021 District Return To School Plan amidst ever-changing directives on a federal, state, and local level.&nbsp; District Superintendent Dr. Ron Hanson submitted a return to school resolution to the NPPS Board of Education on Monday, July 13, 2020, that will allow NPPS administration the go-ahead to move forward plans to return to school this fall.&nbsp; This resolution will be voted on during the August 10, 2020, meeting.

Hanson stated, 'As you know, there continues to be concerns and questions related to how schools plan to reopen in August 2020. While we are in the business of educating, our priority is the safety of our students and staff.' Dr. Hanson and his directors have been diligently working on the district return to school plan since May.&nbsp; He went on to add, 'We have gathered input from parents, staff, community stakeholders, administrators, state leaders, the Nebraska Department of Education, and medical professionals via surveys, committee meetings, and work sessions, and weekly West Center District Health Department Command Center meetings. Administrators have been planning for increased safety procedures that can be taken at every location.' NPPS is very excited to have students back in their buildings with each person's health and safety in mind.

Based on the guidance of the district return to school plan, each NPPS principal will provide a 'Playbook' that will identify specific details for their building.&nbsp; The playbook will include items such as drop-off areas and times, face-covering requirements, what to do when a student is not feeling well, and how to handle specific questions from families related to COVID-19.&nbsp; School playbooks will be available on each school's website the week of July 27, 2020.

Based on the current DHM as well as guidance from the West Central Health Department and the Nebraska Department of Education, NPPS plans to return to school, as expected, on August 17th&nbsp;and 18th.

NPPS is planning to start school in August with the following guidance:

SCOTTSBLUFF — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Maryland man and seized 42 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

At approximately 6:00 p.m. MT Sunday, a trooper observed a Hyundai Genesis speeding at mile marker 57 near Sidney. During the traffic stop, the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity. A search of the vehicle revealed 42 pounds of marijuana concealed in trash bags in the trunk.

The driver, Ryan Chun, 29, of Bladensburg, Maryland, was arrested for possession of marijuana – more than one pound. Chun was lodged in Cheyenne County Corrections.

Game and Parks and Pheasants Forever will co-lead the project known as the Grassland Enhancement Initiative, which will help landowners implement prescribed fire, tree removal, herbicide application, disking, grazing, or herbaceous seeding, among other habitat improvement practices. In doing so, the initiative will counter threats to grasslands that have resulted in less plant diversity and decreased habitat for grassland birds and other species.

The new land management activities will restore plant diversity and productivity for wildlife, including pollinators, such as monarchs and native bees, and grassland birds, such as grasshopper sparrows, greater prairie-chickens, and pheasants.

“The project partners have a proven track record and recognized programs to undertake grassland management across the state on both native grasslands and Conservation Reserve Program acres,” the NET board wrote.

The creation and improvement of grasslands will generate many direct and indirect benefits to landowners and wildlife, as well as hunters and local economies for years after the enhancements are completed.

The Nebraska Legislature created the Nebraska Environmental Trust in 1992 and has issued more than $328 million in grants to over 2,300 projects across the state using revenue from the Nebraska Lottery. Grants are given available to anyone for the preservation, protection and restoration the state’s natural resources for future generations.

The fire was reported around 10:30 p.m. Sunday not far from the Golden Spike observation tower, officials said. Arriving firefighters found the car fully engulfed in flames. It took several hours for fire crews from several surrounding departments, as well as Union Pacific employees, to extinguish the fire.

No one was injured, but all of the vehicles loaded on the rail car were destroyed. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

LINCOLN, Neb.-This week, Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) are participating in Operation Safe Driver Week. Operation Safe Driver is an initiative organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).

The week-long effort runs from July 12 through July 18 and includes law enforcement agencies throughout North America. This year, CVSA has placed an emphasis on speed enforcement for Operation Safe Driver Week. CVSA reports that states throughout the country have seen an increase in excessive speeding similar to that which Nebraska has experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the first directed health measures were issued in mid-March, Nebraska State Troopers have issued 387 speeding citations for drivers traveling faster than 100 miles per hour, an average of more than 3 per day. During the same time period in 2019, NSP issued 202 such citations.

NSP will partner with members of the Nebraska Trucking Association to assist in speed enforcement. That work will include efforts such as “Trooper in a Truck”. A swath of the state from the southwestern corner up to north-central Nebraska was likely to see winds of up to 70 mph, large hail and frequent lightning from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tuesday, the weather service said.

Cities in the storms' path include North Platte, Kearney, Imperial, Ogallala and Thedford. Some of those areas, including around Thedford, Grant and Seneca, saw a rash of weak tornadoes last week, although little damage was reported.

Other areas of the state, including much of the Nebraska Panhandle and the eastern third of the state, were under a slight or marginal risk of severe weather Monday night, the service said.

WHAT:&nbsp;Food Bank for the Heartland is committed to helping those struggling with food insecurity and is partnering with North Platte High School to host a free drive-up mobile pantry to assist food-insecure individuals and families in Lincoln County and the surrounding communities. There are no requirements to attend.

360 community packs will be available, which are 28-pound prepackaged boxes filled with a variety of nonperishable staple items like peanut butter, rice, beans, canned fruits and vegetables, among others. Boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farmers to Families Food Box Program will also be offered.

Volunteers are assembling the community packs at Food Bank for the Heartland. They are practicing social distancing in the volunteer center, and, as always, they are washing their hands and following food safety guidelines.

A drive-up distribution method is being used in North Platte to prioritize the health and safety of the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals and families coming to the mobile pantry should stay in their vehicles. Volunteers will help direct traffic and load the food for them.

The petition, filed Friday, sought the change in light of the risk posed by law school graduates congregating in one place to take the exam, the Omaha World-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://www.omaha.com/news/state-and-regional/nebraska-supreme-court-rejects-request-to-let-grads-practice-law-without-taking-bar-exam/article_9f627edb-5f14-5ca0-9923-216488ff31b8.html" target="_blank">reported</a>. On Saturday, the state's high court ruled against the move.

"The court is mindful of the challenges inherent in studying for and taking the bar examination in ordinary times, and our decision is not intended to diminish the additional challenges of doing so during a pandemic," the court wrote. "But the administration of justice does not stop in a public health emergency."

The Nebraska bar exam, which is usually offered two times a year, will proceed as scheduled on July 28 and 29. People taking the exam must test negative for COVID-19 ahead of time, or they will be deferred to a future exam, which this year includes a third test in September.

LINCOLN, Neb.-Governor Pete Ricketts hosted a press conference with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to highlight opportunities for outdoor recreation in the Cornhusker State.&nbsp;

“If you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors, Nebraska’s state parks, historical parks, and recreation areas provide a wealth of opportunities for socially-distanced fun,” said Gov. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission oversees eight state parks, ten historical parks, and around 60 other recreation areas.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission opened designated swimming areas and public beaches in June, and it opened pools at state parks the first weekend in July.&nbsp; The Commission began offering limited lodging reservations in late June.&nbsp; Additionally, educational and interpretive centers have reopened to the public.

Camping is now open at all park and wildlife management areas. &nbsp;Guests can make reservations for overnight camping on the Commission’s website, or find first-come, first-serve camping spots at parks located across the state.

Gov. Ricketts, Game and Parks encourage Nebraskans to enjoy the great outdoors

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The Nebraska State Patrol SWAT Team has arrested a man after a brief standoff in Broken Bow following a homicide in rural Custer County Saturday evening.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Saturday, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting that occurred at 80451 Round Valley Road, north of Broken Bow. The victim, Crystal Esch, 62, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The suspect, Trenton Esch, 44, is the stepson of the victim.

Esch was believed to have fled to his residence at 208 South N Street in Broken Bow. NSP SWAT responded to the scene. At approximately, 9:40 p.m., Esch exited the residence voluntarily and was taken into custody without further incident.

Esch has been lodged in Custer County Jail. The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation.

Suspect arrested following homicide, standoff in Broken Bow

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — State officials said a staff member at the Nebraska State Penitentiary tested positive for the coronavirus and is self-isolating at home. 

The latest case brings to 24 the number of staff members working at the Nebraska Department of Corrections who have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Twenty of those have recovered. 

Officials are notifying people who work and live at the facility of the case, and anyone who had close contact with the staff member will be directed to self-quarantine until they are cleared by a medical provider.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Mullen Public Schools posted the following message on their Facebook page:&nbsp;

This message is on behalf of West Central Health Department and Hirschfelds to inform you that a student of Mullen Public Schools has tested positive for COVID-19. The student was in attendance at the prom that was held on July 1st in North Platte. If you or any of your family members were in attendance at Prom on July 1st, West Central recommends that you quarantine immediately. If your student brought an outside date, please contact them immediately and have them follow&nbsp;the same directions. Mullen student who attended prom held in North Platte tests positive for COVID-19

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The West Central District Health Department (WCDHD) reported five new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in their jurisdiction on Friday.

According to WCDHD, two cases are from Lincoln County including a female in her 20s, actively isolating at home (this case is travel related) and a male in his 50s, actively isolating at home (this case is under investigation).

The following cases are all from McPherson County:

*The first case is a female in her 20s, actively isolating at home. 

*The second case is a male in his teens, actively isolating at home. 

*The third case is a female in her&nbsp;40s, actively isolating at home. 

All three of these cases are under investigation and are the first cases for McPherson County.

WCDHD reports five new cases of COVID-19 in jurisdiction

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Law enforcement are asking the public for assistance in locating an escaped Lincoln County inmate.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office,&nbsp;On July 9, 2020 at 7:43 pm, the Lincoln County Detention Center advised an inmate worker had left the property and not returned. 

Deputies responded and found that thirty six year old North Platte native Anthony Nunnenkamp left his work detail and did not return. 

Deputies searched his last known residence and did not locate Nunnenkamp. 

On July 10, 2020 an Escape Warrant was issued for Nunnenkamp. 

Anyone with information on Mr. Nunnenkamp’s whereabouts please contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office or anonymously through Lincoln County Crime Stoppers. (308) 534-8400 or 1 (800) -933 – TIPS.

Free tuition is available for qualifying individuals whose employment has been negatively impacted by COVID-19.

Mid-Plains Community College is partnering with the Department of Economic Development and Nebraska Department of Labor to provide the Nebraska Workforce Retraining Initiative.

As part of the initiative, individuals who have lost their jobs or are underemployed as a result of COVID-19 can apply for scholarships to help them receive training for high-wage, high-demand careers and industries.

Both short-term for-credit and non-credit course offerings are available through MPCC. The programs include:

MPCC: Free tuition available for those affected by COVID-19

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The number of people hospitalized for the coronavirus in Nebraska has fallen to its lowest level since mid-April, but residents still need to exercise caution to keep the virus from spreading, state officials said Friday.

Nebraska's hospitals were treating 97 patients as of Thursday, down a high of 257 on May 27. The state has a total of hospital 3,907 beds, and 1,583 of those were available for patients as of Thursday evening.

"We continue to see declining hospitalizations, so that's good news," Gov. Pete Ricketts said at a news conference. "Our cases have been relatively steady, so that's good news, too. But this only (will continue) if we continue to practice social distancing."

Nebraska officials confirmed 198 new cases of the virus on Thursday and two new deaths, bringing the state totals to 20,623 cases and 284 deaths since the pandemic began.

State and private labs have tested 201,249 people so far, according to the&nbsp;<a href="https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/ece0db09da4d4ca68252c3967aa1e9dd" target="_blank">state's online tracking portal</a>. More than 15,200 of the people diagnosed with the virus have since recovered.

Omaha's Douglas County remains the hardest-hit county in Nebraska, with 7,773 known cases since the pandemic began and nearly 1,200 within the last 14 days.

Nebraska currently has 41% of its hospital beds available and 78% of its ventilators available, according to the state tracking system.

Ricketts said the state's main virus-testing service, TestNebraska, also swabbed about 3,600 people on Tuesday. State officials fell short of their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/d955d87297d9365483f178ed0774f9f6" target="_blank">initial goal</a>&nbsp;of providing 3,000 tests per day by the end of May, but have since managed to increase the number.

Nebraska announced&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/5eaae749e0d2466aa8af301d85de454c" target="_blank">the $27 million, no-bid contract</a>&nbsp;with Utah-based Nomi Health and other firms on April 21. They had hoped to hit the testing target within five weeks.

Nebraska has gradually eased social-distancing restrictions as the number of people hospitalized with the virus remained stable. On Friday, Ricketts urged residents to visit the state parks as a summer getaway instead of traveling to virus hot spots.

Nebraska Game and Parks Administrator Jim Swenson said the parks have seen an uptick in fishing and other activities this summer as more residents sought vacations that don't require extensive travel.
