LINCOLN –&nbsp;In a unanimous vote on August 7, 2025, the Nebraska Environmental Trust (NET) Board appointed Holly Adams as the agency’s new Executive Director.

Adams stated, “As Executive Director, I envision leading our agency with transparency and a renewed commitment to public engagement while adhering to NET’s updated laws, policies, and procedures. I am dedicated to our mission of conserving, enhancing, and restoring Nebraska’s natural environments. By maintaining open communication and consistency with our grantees, we will rebuild trust and increase our impact.”

After reviewing 54 applications, NET’s Executive Committee selected six candidates for the first round of interviews. Two candidates advanced to the second round, and Holly Adams was ultimately chosen as the finalist.

Holly Adams has served the State of Nebraska for the past twelve years. During the last five years, she has acquired valuable knowledge and experience in her role as the NET's Grant Administrator.

Adams holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife with an emphasis on Conservation Biology.

North Platte , NE - Students across North Platte are getting ready to trade in their summer schedules for backpacks and early mornings as both public and parochial schools kick off the new school year next week.

For&nbsp;North Platte Public Schools, the week begins with fall sports practices starting&nbsp;Monday, August 11, followed by a busy slate of events. On&nbsp;Wednesday, August 13, classes will start for&nbsp;Kindergarten through 9th grade, with&nbsp;10th through 12th graders&nbsp;returning on&nbsp;Thursday, August 14.

North Platte Catholic Schools&nbsp;will also welcome students back on a staggered schedule.&nbsp;Wednesday, August 13&nbsp;will mark the first day for&nbsp;7th and 9th graders, while all grade levels will be back in class starting&nbsp;Thursday, August 14.

The week will also feature community events, including a volleyball parents meeting Monday evening at the Dawg House, and a softball scrimmage at Dowhower Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m., where admission is a bottle of Gatorade.

(AP) — The Lincoln County Board of Equalization is set to convene Monday, August 11, at 9:15 a.m. in the Commissioners Room of the Lincoln County Courthouse for a regularly scheduled meeting that includes routine business, property valuation updates, and ongoing budget discussions.

The meeting will open with a prayer, followed by the approval of minutes from the Aug. 4 meeting of the Board of Commissioners. Among items up for consideration are routine financial claims and treasurer’s receipts, fee reports from the sheriff, clerk, and register of deeds, and the final distress warrant report from the county treasurer. Commissioners will also vote on appointing Jason Schultz as the county’s Title VI Coordinator and on a right-of-way request from Telecom Construction for Lumen (CenturyLink) services.

At 9:15 a.m., the board will recess and reconvene as the Board of Equalization to consider corrections and refunds submitted by the County Assessor and review a valuation change listed as Notice No. 2025-024. Approval of minutes from the Equalization Board’s Aug. 4 meeting will also be on the agenda.

The Board of Commissioners will reconvene at 9:30 a.m. to consider a special designated liquor permit request from TBS Liquors NP LLC for a wedding reception scheduled Sept. 13 at Cottonwood Springs Venue. At 9:40, commissioners will recognize National Emergency Management Awareness Month.

Other scheduled items include authorizing a labor agreement with Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #26 at 9:50 a.m., followed by a 10:00 a.m. discussion on a proposed resolution regarding rules and regulations for board meetings.

A closed session may be held to address litigation strategies, real estate transactions, security matters, or personnel evaluations if needed.

August 7, 2025 (Omaha, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating an incident in which a subject died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after fleeing a traffic stop.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. today, a trooper performed a traffic stop on a Ford F-150 pickup on westbound I-80 near 96th&nbsp;Street in Omaha. During the traffic stop, the trooper observed the driver to be impaired and saw open alcohol containers in the vehicle. The driver, an adult male, then accelerated and fled westbound. The driver was the lone occupant of the pickup. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The vehicle fled northbound on Interstate 680. As the vehicle continued northbound, the Omaha Police Department’s Able 1 joined the pursuit from the air. Another trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks to slow the vehicle.

Just after the vehicle passed Blair High Road, still traveling on I-680, the driver began firing multiple shots out the driver’s side window and drove down the south embankment, crashing into a tree at the backyard of a residence near North 88th&nbsp;and Sunrise Streets. Able 1 advised that the driver did not exit the vehicle. Additional troopers and OPD officers arrived on scene to establish a perimeter.

After several attempts to communicate with the driver, a drone was deployed and observed the driver motionless inside the vehicle. An OPD K9 unit approached the pickup and found the driver with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The driver was transported to the Nebraska Medical Center where he died a short time later. The driver’s name will be released following the family notification process.&nbsp;A rifle was located inside the vehicle.

No troopers or officers fired shots at any point during the incident. The incident remains under investigation, with assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Omaha Police Department. The pursuit lasted approximately ten minutes.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte City Council worked through a packed agenda Tuesday night, tackling key issues from airport funding to conditional use permits including a well-attended public hearing on a proposed daycare center at the former Osgood School building.

Despite the many things on the agenda, the meeting remained civil and productive, Mayor Brandon Kelliher said.

“If you come out alive and don’t feel like you were beating each other up, I think we’re going to claim that as an overall success,” Kelliher said.

Airport Funding and Port of the Plains Expansion

The Council approved a resolution allowing city administration to draft an agreement with the North Platte Regional Airport Authority to provide monthly advances of its annual property tax revenues. The move aims to help the airport avoid taking out costly lines of credit by smoothing its revenue stream.

“It’s really a tax control measure,” Kelliher said, explaining that consistent monthly advances will eliminate the need for interest payments and reduce future tax burden.

The council also supported a resolution recommending the inclusion of the airport within the boundaries of the Nebraska International Port of the Plains. The move would allow for future cargo operations and potential commercial development on airport grounds—possibly making North Platte the first city in Nebraska with a port designation at an airport.

With new tennis and pickleball courts now open, councilmembers addressed concerns about damage from off-leash dogs during training sessions. The council held the first reading of an ordinance prohibiting animals on the new court surfaces and introduced plans to install a fenced dog training area at Kriz Park.

“We’re not trying to displace dog trainers permanently,” Kelliher said. “We just can’t have the surface of the tennis courts damaged.”

The designated dog training area won’t be a full dog park but will offer space for off-leash training, fetching, and classes. The mayor said future expansions could be considered depending on how the area is used.

Public Hearing: Daycare at Former School Endorsed

The most anticipated item of the night was a public hearing and conditional use permit application by Trucks N Tiaras Academy, a local daycare operator seeking to move to 491–495 W. State Farm Road, formerly Osgood School.

“Usually when there's something contentious, someone will speak against it—even just one person,” Kelliher said. “But in this case, all public comments were in favor.”

Ryan Purdy, president of Mid-Plains Community College, which purchased the building earlier this year, shared the college’s future plans during the meeting. While Trucks N Tiaras will operate in the facility under a two-year lease, the college is preparing to develop academic programs at the site thereafter.

Mayor Kelliher took a moment to remind residents of the importance of public hearings and civic involvement.

“You make the best decisions when you have all the facts,” he said. “Just because you don’t agree with something doesn’t mean your facts are wrong. That’s how the democratic process works.”

Kelliher encouraged residents to attend council meetings, ask questions, and share their perspectives — especially on issues that matter directly to them.

“There’s nothing wrong with coming out and saying you disagree with something. It’s not only welcomed, it’s essential.”

The next North Platte City Council meeting is scheduled for later this month.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (Aug. 5, 2025) — The North Platte Police Department made 215 traffic contacts during a recent speed enforcement campaign that ran from July 12 to July 31, officials announced Tuesday.

The campaign was part of a statewide initiative sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aimed at reducing speeding and improving road safety.

Of the contacts made, officers issued 47 citations, including 11 for speeding, eight for operator’s license violations, and three for traffic signal violations. Police also made five arrests for driving under the influence.

Seven individuals were taken into custody on arrest warrants, and one person was arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of a controlled substance.

Additionally, one juvenile was cited for being a minor in possession (MIP), and one person was cited for having an open alcohol container in a vehicle.

North Platte, NE – After a 2024 Football campaign that saw North Platte High barely miss out on the Class A football playoffs, Head Coach Kurt Altig is ready to usher in a new era of Bulldog Football – one defined by the team's youth and a huge emphasis on fundamentals.

Coming off a 4-5 season, the Bulldogs were one of several teams in the mix for the final playoff spot before ultimately finishing 17th out of the playoffs. “It’s crazy how it comes down to hundredths of points,” Altig said. “You have to control your own destiny.” Despite a below .500 record, North Platte was able to put up competitive showings against some of the stronger teams in Class A, like Lincoln Southeast and Lincoln East.

Now, after years of small roster movement, Altig heads into the season with the largest turnover of talent he has seen since taking over the head coaching duties at North Platte High. The Bulldogs graduated 19 starters and more than 24 total players, leaving the depth chart largely blank heading into the season's start. “We’ve got a whole bunch of new faces,” he said. “It’s our job now to find the right spots for them.”

The youth movement will be anchored by returning starters Jake Kincaid and Treyton Burke, two players Altig is counting on to lead both vocally and by example. “You know, those guys, they have the most varsity experience coming in,” Altig said. “We're really going to lean on them.” Burke, who has recently committed to Chadron State, and Kincaid bring rare varsity experience to a group that is largely making its Friday night debut soon.

Despite the new faces, North Platte won’t stray far from their identity. Expect more of the Bulldog way with their Flex-Bone offense, and a defense designed to stop the run and frustrate opponents. “Coaches hate playing us, they hate playing our offense,” Altig said. “That’s why we run it.”

North Platte opens the season at home against Kearney on August 29th. While Altig didn’t want to commit to making record predictions, he said the team’s main goal is simple. Get back to the playoffs. “We're going to play our brand of football and give ourselves a chance,” he said. “That's all we can ask for.”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (Aug. 4, 2025) — The North Platte Planning Commission and City Council are scheduled to hold consecutive public meetings Tuesday, August 5, with both agendas featuring a proposed daycare facility in a transitional agricultural zone.

The Planning Commission will meet at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 211 West Third Street, to consider a conditional use permit application from Trucks N Tiaras Intergenerational Academy. The permit would allow the academy to operate a daycare center at 491-495 West State Farm Road, occupying part of the former Osgood Elementary School building.

According to city planning staff, the facility would not require new construction and would maintain 100 existing childcare spots while potentially adding 40 to 60 more. A previous childcare center operated at the site from 2020 to 2023. Staff expressed no objections to the request, citing compatibility with the site's past uses.

Following the Planning Commission meeting, the North Platte City Council will convene at 6 p.m. — a half hour later than its usual start time. The council’s agenda includes a separate public hearing on the same daycare proposal.

The zoning status of the property — designated A-1 Transitional Agricultural — has made the proposal a topic of heightened public interest. The council will also hold hearings on a proposed seasonal cabin on Hilltop Circle and a real estate sale on West 13th Street.

The Visit North Platte Board of Directors approved the funding during its monthly meeting on July 30. A total of $6,245 was awarded, exceeding the $5,745 in submitted requests. The grants are funded through lodging taxes collected from overnight stays at hotels and other accommodations in Lincoln County.

The next grant application deadline is Oct. 1 for events scheduled in January, February or March of 2026. Applications will be reviewed during the board’s Oct. 22 meeting. Event organizers are encouraged to contact Visit North Platte at (308) 532-4729 to discuss eligibility and guidelines.

Visit North Platte operates under an agreement with the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners and is funded entirely by local lodging taxes. These funds are used to market the region and support tourism-related events that contribute to the area's economic vitality.

Our community-based mentoring program builds strong, supportive relationships that help youth thrive. Mentoring pairs meet regularly for 4 to 8 hours each month, connecting in public spaces or over school lunch, with opportunities to join monthly group activities. SAPS is a 20+ member coalition that meets monthly to plan and implement strategies that help keep youth safe, healthy, and substance-free. The coalition hosts prescription drug take-back events on the third Saturday of each month at Bomgaars, distributes medication lock boxes to promote safe storage, and provides alcohol tamper-evident strips to support parents in preventing underage drinking. Through education, community engagement, and practical tools, SAPS works to reduce access to harmful substances and protect young people from the risks of marijuana, prescription drug misuse, and underage alcohol use.

TFLC works to create a healthier, tobacco-free future by reducing use and exposure in our community. The coalition focuses on helping individuals quit tobacco, preventing youth from starting (including e-cigarettes), and eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke and aerosol. TFLC also works to address health disparities linked to commercial tobacco use through outreach, education, and advocacy. By promoting smoke-free environments and providing resources for families, TFLC helps protect the health of both current and future generations.

OGALLALA, Neb. (Aug. 1, 2025) — A Perkins County man reported missing after failing to return home from work was found deceased Thursday evening in Keith County, authorities said.

According to the Keith County Sheriff’s Office,  Trenton Weinke of Elsie had been reported missing by the Perkins County Sheriff’s Office on the evening of July 30. Weinke had last been seen while working on irrigation pivots in Keith County and was driving a blue Chevrolet 2500 truck towing an ATV on a trailer.

Initial efforts to locate Weinke began after his cellphone was last pinged in an area south of Highway 61 and east of Ogallala Community Hospital. Deputies conducted vehicle searches in the area throughout the night.

Search efforts resumed the morning of July 31, with the Keith County Sheriff’s Office and Ogallala Ambulance District deploying aerial drones and conducting ground searches using utility terrain vehicles. Despite extensive efforts, Weinke was not located.

Later that day, deputies received a report of a possible pivot site Wenke may have intended to check on his route home. The location was near County Road 20 East and County Road D South. Upon arriving in the area, deputies located Weinke's vehicle approximately half a mile south of the pivot entrance on a minimum maintenance road. He was found deceased at the scene, the result of a vehicle accident.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Additional details will be released as they become available, the sheriff’s office said.

Missing Man Found Dead in Keith County Following Overnight Search

North Platte, NE – The City of North Platte has received community reports regarding an unpleasant odor experienced earlier this week. Mayor Brandon Kelliher and City officials responded promptly to investigate and are offering an update to keep residents informed.

The source of the odor was traced primarily to the City’s new industrial sewer plant, which remains under active construction for approximately 18 more months. While a temporary odor control system has been in place and has worked effectively for the past two months, a combination of construction activity, weather conditions, and natural system processes contributed to this temporary event.

“The odor was the result of necessary pump installation work at the plant. During this phase, sewer water was temporarily diverted into uncovered static lagoons for approximately 36 hours, rather than into the covered, odor-controlled system.”

This condition was compounded by heavy rainfall over the last two weeks, which diluted odor-controlling chemicals in the open lagoons, and eastern winds that carried the odor toward town.

In addition to construction-related factors, the City’s municipal sewer lagoons are currently experiencing one of their twice-annual biological "turnovers"—a natural process during which layers of water mix and release gases that can generate noticeable odors for 36 to 48 hours. This turnover is a routine and unavoidable part of the lagoon’s natural treatment cycle.

As soon as the odor was reported to City Hall, the City’s Odor Detection Team was dispatched. Their investigation confirmed the odor was coming from the industrial facility and was being carried westward due to current wind patterns.

Mayor Kelliher emphasized that while occasional odor may occur as construction and seasonal lagoon activity progress, these incidents are temporary and not expected to be regular.

“We understand this caused some inconvenience for residents, and we’re committed to maintaining open communication and minimizing impacts during this important infrastructure project,” Kelliher said.

The City thanks the public for its patience and understanding as work continues on the facility, which is a critical long-term investment in North Platte’s wastewater and industrial services
