A local chapter of the Widows Sons motorcycle organization presented a $6,000 donation to Homestead Refuge on Friday morning, offering a significant boost to the nonprofit’s mission of supporting victims of sex trafficking in rural Nebraska.

The presentation took place during a live radio interview at Eagle Media in North Platte, where representatives from both groups spoke about their shared commitment to helping vulnerable individuals rebuild their lives.

Road Runner, Guardian of Membership for District 13 and a representative of the Widows Sons’ Western Travelers Chapter, said the funds were raised during the group’s annual state rally held in June. The Widows Sons, a fraternal motorcycle group made up of Master Masons, selected Homestead Refuge as the charitable beneficiary for this year’s event.

“We’re a charitable riding organization that focuses on helping widows, orphans, and anyone in need, especially those affected by abuse or hardship,” Road Runner said. “We’re proud of what we were able to raise with the help of our brothers from across the country.”

The Western Travelers Chapter includes nine fully patched members and two journeymen currently working toward full membership. The funds were raised through raffles, auctions, and other rally activities.

Accepting the donation on behalf of Homestead Refuge was Betty Remus, a volunteer who has been instrumental in the organization’s development.

Located in rural Lincoln County, Homestead Refuge offers a safe haven for survivors of sex trafficking, providing peace, privacy, and healing in a country setting. The home features animals and quiet outdoor spaces to aid in recovery.

“We’re a place where survivors can escape the chaos and begin the long process of healing,” Remus said. “This donation means the world to us, especially as we work to sustain and grow our program with limited staff and funding.”

Homestead Refuge currently employs one paid staff member, thanks to a private donor, with the remainder of operations handled by volunteers. The organization began about four years ago, when Remus and others repurposed an old family home into a shelter after feeling called to address the growing trafficking issue in the area.

August 1, 2025 (Lexington, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating multiple crashes that left several people injured and closed parts of I-80 for several hours Thursday.

The initial crash occurred just before 1:00 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 244 on I-80 westbound. A passenger vehicle suffered a blown-out tire and lost control. A semi hauling cattle attempted to avoid the other vehicle and overturned. Neither driver was injured. There were 36 cattle in the trailer. 21 survived the crash.

As the first crash was nearing the end of clean-up at approximately 6:50 p.m., a second crash occurred approximately one mile east of the first crash. An NDOT arrow truck was parked on the shoulder of westbound I-80, directing traffic to move into the passing lane. A westbound semi then rear-ended the arrow truck.

The driver of the NDOT pickup suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He has been with NDOT for 14 years. The driver of the semi was transported to Lexington Regional Health Center with minor injuries.

The second crash required the closure of westbound I-80. At approximately 7:40 p.m., while additional troopers were directing westbound traffic off I-80 at the Overton interchange, at mile marker 248, a Chevrolet Sonic drove around the barricade and continued westbound. Near mile marker 246, the Chevrolet rear-ended traffic that was moving slowly because of the previous crash. The vehicle hit both a Dodge 1500 pickup and a semi-trailer.

The driver of the Chevrolet and two occupants from the Dodge were all transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet has been cited for DUI, possession of an open alcohol container, and driving on a closed roadway.

Nebraska State Patrol Investigating Three Crashes Within Two Miles in Dawson County

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (Aug. 1, 2025) — The federal building in downtown North Platte now bears a new name, honoring a historic figure in Nebraska politics — former Congresswoman Virginia Smith.

A formal ceremony held this week commemorated the renaming of the building after Smith, who represented Nebraska’s Third Congressional District from 1975 to 1991. She remains the only woman from the state to have served in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The renaming was made possible through legislation introduced in 2024 by members of Nebraska’s federal delegation.

“Her legacy is still all over this Third District,” said Anna Castner Wightman, a former congressional staffer for Smith. “To come from these small towns and help Mrs. Smith serve a district and state we love, and watch her masterfully bring home projects like the Valentine Weather Station and the Heartland Expressway — it was inspiring.”

Current Third District Congressman Adrian Smith praised his predecessor’s dedication and work ethic.

“To serve in her footsteps is an honor,” he said. “She led the way with hard work, traveling the district and really setting the example for how to best serve Nebraskans.”

Lincoln County Commissioner Micaela Wuehler, the first woman elected to the board, called Smith a trailblazer.

“Virginia Smith was more than just the first congresswoman from Nebraska; she broke barriers with grace and grit,” Wuehler said. “She elevated agriculture on the national stage and showed what strong, compassionate representation looks like.”

A similar dedication ceremony is scheduled Friday in Lexington, where the post office will be renamed in honor of William E. and Elsie L. Barrett.

North Platte, NE — West Central District Health Department has confirmed that a mosquito pool in Lincoln County has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV), the first detection of the virus in our area this season.

West Nile Virus is spread to humans primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. While most people infected will not develop symptoms, some individuals — particularly older adults and those with weakened immune systems — may develop severe illness.

“This finding is a reminder that West Nile Virus is present in our community,” said Meghan Trevino, Executive Director of West Central District Health Department. “The best protection is prevention. We encourage everyone to take simple steps — like using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and removing standing water — to reduce mosquito bites and lower the risk of illness.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following precautions to reduce exposure:

· Use EPA-registered insect repellents when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

· Wear long sleeves and pants to reduce skin exposure when possible.

· Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes lay eggs (e.g., buckets, flowerpots, old tires, birdbaths).

· Install or repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (July 29, 2025) — After two days of competition on North Platte’s premier golf courses, the 2025 North Platte Junior Ambassadors Golf Tournament crowned its age-group champions Tuesday following the final round at Rivers Edge Golf Course.

The annual two-day event brought together dozens of young golfers ranging from age 7 to 18. The opening round was held Monday at Lake Maloney Golf Course, with Tuesday’s final round challenging players with the tighter fairways and hazards of Rivers Edge.

In the 16-18 boys division, Reid Loop emerged as the overall winner with a two-day total of +8, fending off a charge from Logan Hayes (+16) and Camden Weaver (+17). Loop’s consistent play across both days proved key as he held off a competitive field of 19 players.

Among younger players, Cooper Rippen took the Boys 7-9 title with a total of +10, finishing ten strokes ahead of runner-up Carter Schwartz (+20). Rippen’s opening round lead held strong despite pressure from the field.

Henry Amen dazzled in the Boys 10-11 category, shooting a tournament-best -8, the only sub-par performance across all age groups. Elias Champ placed second at -1, while Ryan O’Neill finished third at +11.

The Girls 16-18 division was won by Allie Jones with a two-day total of +25, ahead of Sawyer Swarm (+30) and Ansley Cadwallader (+59).

In the Girls 8-10 division, Merelise Champ topped the leaderboard at +25, while Hadley Amen claimed the Girls 11-12 title at +17. Micajah Long shot +38 to win the Girls 14-15 flight.

The Junior Ambassadors tournament remains a showcase for youth golf in western Nebraska, offering players a chance to compete in a formal setting and prepare for future high school and collegiate competition.

These legendary companies will seamlessly connect over 50,000 route miles across 43 states from the East Coast to the West Coast, linking approximately 100 ports and nearly every corner of North America. This combination will transform the U.S. supply chain, unleash the industrial strength of American manufacturing, and create new sources of economic growth and workforce opportunity that preserves union jobs.&nbsp;

Under the terms of the agreement, Union Pacific will acquire Norfolk Southern in a stock and cash transaction, implying a value for Norfolk Southern of $320 per share based on Union Pacific’s unaffected closing stock price on July 16, 2025[1], and representing a 25% premium to Norfolk Southern’s 30-trading day volume weighted average price on July 16, 2025. The value per share implies an enterprise value of $85 billion for Norfolk Southern, resulting in the creation of a combined enterprise of over $250 billion.

“Railroads have been an integral part of building America since the Industrial Revolution, and this transaction is the next step in advancing the industry,” said Jim Vena, Union Pacific Chief Executive Officer. “Imagine seamlessly hauling steel from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Colton, California and moving tomato paste from Huron, California to Fremont, Ohio. NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (July 28, 2025) — Longtime Lincoln County Commissioner Joseph Hewgley was honored Monday morning during a surprise reception at the Lincoln County Commissioners meeting, celebrating four decades of service to the county.

Commission Chairwoman Micaela Wuehler led the recognition, presenting Hewgley with the prestigious Admiral’s Award on behalf of the Nebraska Governor. She also presented a personalized plaque created by Squared Away Engraving of North Platte, and thanked Hewgley for his leadership and mentorship over the years.

“Joe has been a mentor to many,” Wuehler said. “His knowledge, consistency, and dedication to conservative budgeting have left a lasting mark on Lincoln County.”

Sheriff Jerome Kramer also took the podium to present a plaque of appreciation on behalf of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. He praised Hewgley’s long-standing support and collaboration with law enforcement.

State Sen. Mike Jacobson presented a Certificate of Appreciation and acknowledged Hewgley’s strong working relationship with the Nebraska Legislature.

“Joe has brought decades of knowledge and common-sense leadership to the table,” Jacobson said. “His work has benefited not just Lincoln County, but the entire state.”

In addition to Hewgley’s recognition, the board also honored Jeff Snyder, a Lincoln County Roads Department employee, for 10 years of service. Roads Superintendent Jason Schultz presented Snyder with a certificate and thanked him for his continued dedication to the county’s infrastructure.

“Jeff’s commitment to his work ensures our roads remain safe and reliable,” Schultz said.

Both recognitions were met with warm applause and standing ovations from those in attendance.

Marriage Licenses Issued this week in Lincoln County (July 27, 2025)

North Platte, Neb. – On Friday, July 25, at approximately 7:02 p.m., officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to a report of a motorcycle crash involving injuries at the intersection of 6th Street and Jeffers Street.

The investigation determined that 26-year-old Tyler Irish was traveling northbound on Jeffers Street on a motorcycle. At the same time, 45-year-old Derrick Harrison was riding a bicycle westbound on 6th Street. Harrison reportedly bypassed vehicles stopped at the stop sign on 6th and entered the intersection, continuing westbound.

Another northbound vehicle in the right lane may have obstructed Harrison’s view of Irish, who was traveling in the inside northbound lane. As Harrison entered that lane, Irish attempted to brake to avoid a collision but was unable to stop in time.

Following the impact between the motorcycle and bicycle, Irish was thrown from the motorcycle and struck a metal signpost at the south end of the Jeffers Street viaduct.

Responding officers immediately began CPR and deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED) until the North Platte Fire Department arrived and took over lifesaving efforts. Irish was transported to Great Plains Health, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Harrison was also transported to Great Plains Health, where he is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.

The Nebraska State Patrol assisted in the ongoing investigation.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (July 25, 2025) — A local firefighter took top honors at the “You Can Be a Star” talent show Thursday afternoon at the Lincoln County Fair, earning a spot in the statewide Galaxy of Stars competition next month.

Jeremy Condon, a firefighter with the North Platte Fire Department, opened the competition with an original song, accompanying himself on guitar. Moments after his performance, he had to leave the fairgrounds to report for duty — unaware that just two hours later, he would be named the winner.

The show is part of the Galaxy of the Stars program created by Wynne Adams and held annually at county fairs across Nebraska. As the first-place winner, Condon automatically qualifies for the statewide finals at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. The top prize at that competition is a $4,500 recording package in Nashville.

Thedford’s Brayden Hickman, 14, was named first runner-up. Hickman also competed in last year’s local talent show. Second runner-up honors went to Gavon Schurr.

The event drew a crowd of spectators and showcased a range of local talent across all age groups.

Wynne Adams, who hosts and organizes the event, said the show continues to be a platform for young performers and emerging artists to shine on a larger stage.

The Galaxy of Stars State Finals are scheduled for late August at the Nebraska State Fair.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Families in the North Platte area are invited to a one-stop community health event this Friday, July 25, at Mid-Plains Community College’s North Campus, where organizers hope to eliminate barriers and connect residents to vital services — all while having a little fun.

Running from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Community Health Fair is a collaborative effort led by organizations including Hope Esperanza, Great Plains Health, West Central District Health Department, North Platte Public Schools, and People’s Health. This year’s event moves to the college’s North Campus at 1101 Halligan Drive, with health booths, safety resources, and school-readiness support available to the public at no cost.

Maria Rodriguez of Hope Esperanza, a nonprofit helping bridge language gaps and connect underserved residents to resources, said the event is designed to streamline back-to-school preparations for local families — particularly those new to the area.

“It’s a one-stop shop where parents can take their children to get vaccines, health screenings, school registrations, safety education, and so much more,” Rodriguez said in a radio interview this week. “We have a lot of newcomers, and we’ve been encouraging them to come, because they can get almost everything done in one visit.”

Booths inside the college cafeteria will feature health screenings, vaccinations, educational materials, and community resources. Outside, families can enjoy kid-friendly activities including a helicopter landing by LifeNet at 4:30 p.m., free backpacks for children who complete activity cards, and grilled food provided by Sustainable Beef, using a grill donated by First Interstate Bank.

Hope Esperanza will also provide language access services for non-English speakers — a core part of its mission, which began with outreach to minority communities but has since expanded to serve all residents.

“We started this to bridge the language gap, but we saw the greater need across the whole community,” Rodriguez said. “This is also a great place to learn about resources people may not need now but could need in the future.”

Rodriguez credited funding from the Nebraska Blue Foundation for helping make the event possible. Part of the grant supports the health fair, while the remainder will fund ongoing health-focused programs through Hope Esperanza.

With school just weeks away, organizers hope families will take advantage of the opportunity to prepare — and enjoy a fun Friday afternoon.

“Bring the kids — there’s something for everyone,” Rodriguez said. “We hope to see you all there.”
