Joan (Kennedy) Batenhorst, age 91, of Omaha, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2023.

VISITATION: 4-6pm, Sunday, April 23rd, with VIGIL SERVICE at 6pm, at St. James Catholic Church, 4710 North 90th Street in Omaha.

Joan was born September 26, 1931, to John and Julia (Carroll) Kennedy
 and spent her childhood in the Cedar Rapids, NE, area. She was the 
youngest of nine children.

After a 12-week summer session in college, she was a teacher at a one-room country school for a year.

Joan married Richard (“Dick”) Batenhorst on September 30, 1950, a 
marriage that lasted 65 happy years before Dick passed away in 2015.

Joan and Dick began their family of four children together while 
living in Cedar Rapids, Aurora, and Kearney before settling in North 
Platte, NE in 1962, where they lived for 32 years before retiring to 
Omaha.

An early sign of Joan’s dedication to her family was her time spent 
as a “door-to-door” encyclopedia salesperson, a tough task undertaken so
 her children would have a full set of World Books as they grew up.

As her children grew older, Joan first worked outside the home as a 
cook and librarian at North Platte St. Patrick’s High School, and later 
was an administrative assistant for the Haney, Ramaekers, and Ludwig 
accounting firm.

Joan was an avid supporter of all her children’s, grandchildren’s, 
and great-grandchildren’s activities and would always be there with an 
encouraging word. She also enjoyed a good game of bridge with her 
friends.

Of great importance to Joan was the right-hand role she filled beside
 her husband as Dick worked countless volunteer hours as a state 
official for the Knights of Columbus. Their KC life together brought 
them life-long friends and happy memories from one end of the state to 
the other.

Family was always a priority, including frequent gatherings with her 
three sisters, which always had to include posing for their (expletive) 
picture.

Ever ready to preserve the moment, Joan’s camera was always close at 
hand. Gatherings were never complete until photos were taken. She 
compiled multiple photo albums and scrapbooks that served her well in 
her later years as she spent many hours looking at “her books.”

Joan always delivered an optimistic “it is what it is” or “this too 
shall pass” attitude with a smile and twinkle in her Irish eyes.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband
 Dick; five brothers: Leonard, Arnold, Donald, Melvin (Bud) and Carroll;
 three sisters: Lucille Ruma, Jeanne Lutz, and Maxine Robinson; numerous
 in-laws and nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her children: Gary (Ellen) Batenhorst of Omaha, 
Nadine (Robert) Karr of Plattsmouth, Russ (Mary) Batenhorst of Hastings,
 and Greg (Mary Lou) Batenhorst of Mt. Vernon, IA. Other survivors 
include five grandchildren: Heidi (Adam) Sleper, Jaime (Justin) Short, 
Julia Batenhorst, Patrick (Rose) Batenhorst, and Tony (Sarah Benal) 
Batenhorst; as well as great-grandchildren: Kalen, Sabrina, Isabelle, 
and Cameron Short, Jamison and Clara Sleper and Bernadette Batenhorst; 
many nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law; and other extended family
 members.

Joan’s family thanks the staff of Hillcrest Health in Bellevue and 
Hillcrest Hospice for their care of Joan in her last two years.

Mary Patricia “Pat” Innocence Young, age 95, of Cambridge, passed away at the Ridgeway Senior Living in Lexington, NE on April 18, 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born in Lawrence, NE on December 28, 1927, to Clement and Elisabeth (Ostdiek) Witte.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family moved to Cambridge when Pat was three years old.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pat attended Cambridge schools and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1945.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was the only child of 11 children of the family to graduate high school.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;After graduation, Pat received a Normal Training Certificate to teach school.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pat taught country school south of Holbrook for several years.&nbsp;

Pat was united in marriage to Eugene Young on February 12, 1949.&nbsp;&nbsp;He preceded her in death on November 7, 2021. She worked for Gene Young Machinery and Service as the bookkeeper.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pat worked at the Butler Memorial Library as a Librarian from 1972 to 2013 before she retired at age 81.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a member of the Cambridge American Legion Unit #199 for 65 years, and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Alter Society.&nbsp; She was a very active volunteer and helped with the Tri-Valley hospital thrift store, was an election poll worker for over 20 years, and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Pat was an excellent cook. Family favorites were, “icky” lemon pie, peanut butter Angel food cake, cinnamon rolls, and many other baked goods.&nbsp; She was known for her family meals and organization, not cutting any corners.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clement and Elisabeth; husband, Gene; son, Philip (Deb) Young; grandson, Kraig Young; nine siblings:&nbsp; Alvin, Gilbert, Wilbur, Irene Kubik, Vera Laughlin, Herb, Edwin, LeRoy, and Arthur.&nbsp;

Pat is survived by her son, Lynn (Joyce) Young of Eustis; daughter, Lisa (Kurt) Gerken of Elwood; grandchildren: Suzanne (Tony) Neels of Gothenburg, Jessica (Randy) Grindle of Kearney, Brooke (Joe) Lambert of Kearney, Kaitlyn (Michael) Ziola of Lincoln, Shawn Young of Omaha, Bronson (Mary Lou) Gerken of Omaha, Christopher Gerken of Elwood, and Avery Gerken of Elwood; 22 great grandchildren; brother, Jerry Witte of Cambridge, and a host of nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Cambridge on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 10:30 AM with Father Ken Wehrs as celebrant. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 10:00 AM prior to mass. Patricia "Pat" (Witte) Young (1927-2023)

&nbsp; Leon Calvin Stinnette, the youngest son of Thomas Steven and Mary May (Skelton) Stinnette was born October 30, 1925, near Enders, Nebraska. Leon attended Ash Grove School in Dundy County, Nebraska, and graduated from Wauneta High School in 1943. Leon married Esta Lavon Davis in September 1945, at Wauneta, Nebraska, and to this union a daughter, Sherilan Dee, was born. Leon and Esta were divorced in November 1948. On June 5, 1953, Leon married Gwenn Goddard in Imperial, Nebraska. Leon began his forty-year career in construction at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1949, as an apprentice carpenter. He later progressed to being a journeyman carpenter, then a foreman, and in 1963, he gained the position of Project Superintendent for Henry C. Beck Company. Leon was responsible for the construction of high-rise buildings in the states of, New Mexico, California, Oregon, and Washington. Leon left the Beck Company in 1969, and he and Gwenn moved to Portland, Oregon, where he was a Project Superintendent for the Hoffman Construction Company for the last eighteen years of his career. His employment with the Hoffman Company included the forty-story First National Bank and Operations Building, in Portland, Oregon, the thirty-seven story Seattle Federal Building, the thirty-three story Pacific Northwest Bell Building, in Seattle, the Weyerhauser Technology Center, with a roof area of five acres, in Federal Way, Washington, the twenty-one story Arco Office Tower in Anchorage, Alaska, and several others. Leon always considered it a privilege to have been given the opportunity to supervise construction of projects of this size. Leon retired in March of 1987, and he a Gwenn later located in Broomfield, Colorado. In retirement, the couple traveled and wintered in California and Arizona. He was a life member of the NRA, ATA, and PITA. Leon passed away early Wednesday morning, April 19, 2023, at the Hillcrest of Loveland Assisted Living Center in Loveland, Colorado. He was 97 years of age. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, wife; Gwenn in 2002, brothers; Howard and Harold, sister; Wilma, and sons-in-law: Ronald Arterburn and James Majors. Leon C Stinnette (1925-2023)

&nbsp; Roger Carl Cook, age 61, of Ogallala, Nebraska, passed away at his home on April 19, 2023. Roger was born on October 31, 1961, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Richard Carl and LaDonna Marie (Olson) Cook. He was a proud graduate of Stapleton Public High School with the Class of 1980. Roger went on to study diesel mechanics in college but ultimately ended up working at a shop that specialized in foreign cars out of school. On June 6, 1992, Roger married Linda Alexander at Lincoln, NE. They moved to Ogallala in 1993, where they enjoyed family, friends, and taking motorcycle rides whenever they got the chance. Throughout his life, Roger was a dedicated workaholic who loved his family dearly. His grandchildren and children were his greatest joy, followed by his passion for his motorcycles. Roger had a terrific sense of humor and was known to be sarcastic from time to time. He was also known for his strong work ethic and exceptional mechanical skills, working for Goodyear, Humphries Auto, and T.O. Haas. He ended his career at Humphries, having made many wonderful friends and acquaintances over the years. Roger was always eager to help others. Roger was preceded in death by his mother, LaDonna Cook; his wife, Linda Cook; and an infant baby sister. Roger is survived by his father, Rich Cook; two daughters, Shanandoah (Tim) Scott and Breanna Cook and significant other Tyson Courter; three sons, Trevor (Naomi) Cook, Damon, and Brendin; sister, Suzette Casillas; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will cherish his memory. Roger Cook (1961-2023)

On April 15, 2023, Vickie Johnson peacefully passed away at her home in 
North Platte. &nbsp;She was 64 years old. 
Vickie was born to Roy and Euphrisia McAnulty in Bakersfield, CA, on May 29, 1958. &nbsp;She grew up in California and had a love for the ocean. &nbsp;She eventually relocated to North Platte where she was a member of Parkview Church of the Nazarene. 
Vickie dedicated her life to helping others.&nbsp; She cared for the elderly in assisted living and as an in-home care provider. &nbsp;Her passion for caring&nbsp; also extended to her pets as she was a pet lover. 
Vickie married Erling "Al" Johnson and raised three sons. &nbsp;She was a 
loving wife, mother and grandmother. 
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Ruth and 
husband, Johnny Headly; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Goodenow. 
Survivors include Vickie's sons, Steven (Anne) Turney and Jared Johnson 
of Hawaii and Timothy Johnson of North Platte; grandchildren, Roman and Alexandria; her sister, Katherin Goodenow of Arnold; brothers, Roy 
(Carolyn) McAnulty of Colorado and Bill McAnulty of Washington; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family. 
Visitation with family will be 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, followed by a memorial service at 11 <a href="http://a.m.at" target="_blank">a.m.at</a> Odean Colonial Chapel. Cremation will follow. &nbsp;

Vickie Johnson (1958-2023)

&nbsp; Esther Kraus, age 86, formerly of Madrid, passed away on April 19, 2023, at the Imperial Manor in Imperial, NE. Esther was born on September 3, 1936, in Julesburg, CO, to Cyriel and Barbara (Schmidt) Lanckriet. She graduated from Julesburg High School. On January 14, 1956, Esther married John Douglas Kraus at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Julesburg. The couple made their home on a farm at Madrid, NE, and their union was blessed with four children: Christine, Debra, Timothy, and Mark. At one time, Esther owned and operated the bar in Madrid. For the last 25 years, she worked as a secretary for her son, Mark Kraus. Esther and Doug eventually moved from their farm to town, but her love for the outdoors remained constant. Esther deeply loved flowers and spent countless hours tending to her garden and working in her yard. Her garden and yard were her sanctuary, and she enjoyed every moment spent outside. Esther was also an excellent cook, and her family will always remember her as a dedicated wife and mother. She adored her four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, always cherishing the time she spent with them. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, brothers Leo, Bob, Renae, and George; and sisters Mary Abts and Madeline Ciemnoczolowski. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Doug Kraus of Imperial; children Chris Wendell of Grant, Deb Kraus of Madrid, Tim Kraus of Ogallala, and Mark Kraus of Madrid; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Betty Lanckriet; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Albert Iowa Kelly, 77, of North Platte, passed away on April 19, 2023, at Great Plains Health.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born to John and Hazel (Lunsford) Kelly on March 5, 1946, in Omaha, NE.&nbsp;

Albert grew up in Omaha where he attended school through the ninth grade.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1968, he married Diane Janssen and to this union two daughters were born: Marcia and Brenda.&nbsp;&nbsp;The couple moved to North Platte in the mid-70s where Albert worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as well as for Myron Walker doing carpentry work.&nbsp;&nbsp;He later married Judy Shook.&nbsp;&nbsp;The couple merged their families, giving Albert a third daughter, Laura.&nbsp;

Fishing was what Albert spent the majority of his free time doing.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was so funny and loved telling jokes while he spent time with his grandchildren and his close friends, especially Toby Ziegler.&nbsp;&nbsp;Albert was always very chivalrous and polite.

Those left to cherish Albert’s memory include his daughters, Marcia Janssen, of Cozad, Brenda (Douglas) Johnson, of Minong, WI, and Laura (Brad) Spiehs, of North Platte; grandchildren, Phillip Janssen, of Cozad, Dakkota (Megan) Austin, of McCook, Nathaniel Manning, of Cozad, Kendra (Charles) Saunders, of Gothenburg, Betty Spiehs, of North Platte, Jacob (Amber) Howard, of Kearney, Dalton Howard, of Kearney, Ame Johnson, of Minong, WI; 16 great grandchildren; close friends, Rick Wherle, Judy Nelson, and Joan Cooper; and many other family members.

Preceding him in death include his parents; brothers, Flloyd and Willie; ex-wife, Diane Janssen; and grandparents.

Services will be held 11:30 A.M., Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Two Rivers Fellowship (106 E 5th, North Platte).&nbsp;

Albert Iowa Kelly (1946-2023)

Tracy Lavern Deminski was born on December 28, 1953 in McCook, NE to V.I. “Bud” Deminski (deceased) and Vene DeMoss Deminski.&nbsp; His two older sisters, Kathy (Jim) Salts and Jeri Barber were expert teasers. He passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 in Methodist Hospital, Omaha, NE after a short battle with lymphoma.

Tracy was educated in the Cambridge (NE) public school system, graduating with the Class of 1973.&nbsp; He lived on “kid row” in Cambridge and developed many lifelong friends on that street.&nbsp; He enjoyed a care free life growing up in Cambridge and he talked about it often. &nbsp;After high school graduation, he received his Associate Degree in art from Southeast Community College in Milford, NE.

Tracy married Connie Jones on January 10, 1976 in Cambridge, NE and they moved to Omaha.&nbsp; He spent the rest of his life there.&nbsp; Tracy and Connie were blessed with two children: Nathan Luke (Sherry) and Katie Lora (Matt).&nbsp; He was very proud of his grandchildren, Leah Vollmuth, Megan Vollmuth and Miles Vollmuth.&nbsp; He especially enjoyed attending their soccer games.

Tracy spent most of his career in the graphic arts/printing fields.&nbsp; He was very gratified with the “hand work” he did before the advent of computers.&nbsp; He didn’t care much for computers!&nbsp; He had many hobbies:&nbsp; water color painting, stained glass, and wood working.&nbsp; He was very happy when his beloved Cubs won the World Series in 2016! &nbsp;In his younger years, he was a fabulous drummer!&nbsp; But most of all, Tracy was funny!!&nbsp; Everyone enjoyed his sense of humor.&nbsp; Friends and relatives could always count on a good laugh when Tracy was around.&nbsp; He was definitely a “quick wit”!

In recent years, Connie finally convinced Tracy to do some traveling.&nbsp; In 2016, the entire family spent a week in Maine.&nbsp; In 2017, Tracy and Connie went on a Viking River cruise on the Moselle, Rhine, Main rivers.&nbsp; Tracy loved it!&nbsp; In 2022, they went on another cruise down the Rhine from the Netherlands to Switzerland.&nbsp; Finally, also in 2022, they took the “Trip of a Lifetime” to Ireland, Scotland and Sweden with their Soucie relatives and son, Nathan.

Tracy will be profoundly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and many friends and relatives.

Tracy Deminski (1953-2023)

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dr. Dan Nguyen, M.D. Dr. Dan was born in 1943 in Vietnam. When he was just two days old, the Japanese bombed the strategic port near his hometown. His family fled to a village in the central part of North Vietnam where they sought safety and refuge. 

This would not be the only time Dan and his family would find themselves in the crosshairs of historic events of their home country. Nonetheless, their family endured and found ways to create normalcy. Dan's first decade of childhood would be filled with going to school, swimming in a nearby pond and learning to speak French. After WWII and the defeat of Japan, there was another war between the French and communist guerillas in North Vietnam. Upon France's defeat and the encroachment of the Viet Cong, Dan (age 11) and his family moved to South Vietnam and settled in Saigon. In Saigon, Dan's interest in science and tenacity for learning would spur his pursuit of medicine. He earned placement in the University of Saigon Medical School through a rigorous testing process–during which only one out of a thousand applicants were accepted. He completed Medical School with a specialty in Internal Medicine in 1973 and was drafted into the South Vietnamese Army shortly thereafter. He served in Pleiku, an essential hospital unit and airbase that included both US and South Vietnamese personnel. On April 29th, 1975, the day before the fall of Saigon, Dan and his brother Phong would board a PT boat in the Saigon River and make their way to a United States Aircraft Carrier. They were welcomed aboard and would be taken to a refugee camp in Malaysia. Eventually they were sent to Guam. Here, Dan showed his abilities as a physician by volunteering to help the 423rd Medical Company clinic at Tent City, Guam, while participating in Operation New Life.

Dan made his way to the United States through a refugee camp in Pennsylvania. From there Dan and his brother were sponsored by a Lutheran Church in Iowa. In Iowa Dan worked as an aide in a nursing home. During the mid-1970s Nebraska’s smaller communities were looking to recruit medical personnel and did so through programs that sponsored doctors from Vietnam entering the U.S. after the war. Dan heard about one of these programs and made his way to Omaha’s University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) to start the next phase of his career. Once Dan passed all of his credentialing exams, he moved from Omaha to Bridgeport, Nebraska, in 1977 to work as a physician. A nurse that worked with Dr. Dan introduced him to her friend Marie, who was the Director of the Cosmetology Program for WNCC in Sydney. After a blind date and a year of courtship, Dan and Marie were married in 1979 and shortly thereafter purchased a practice and moved to Sutherland, Nebraska. They started a family while living there for 5 years. In 1984 Marie heard that Dr. Nakamura, from North Platte, was selling his practice and she contacted a friend to arrange a showing. Dr. Dan purchased the practice, moved his family to North Platte, while maintaining offices in both Sutherland and North Platte. A point of pride during this period was when Dan became a naturalized US Citizen – both of his children witnessed this meaningful event. Dr. Dan was an avid hobbyist and, outside of his practice and family, dedicated his time to many interests over the span of his life including: fishing, reading, cooking, hunting, building remote controlled planes, and eventually taking to the skies in the real deal - solo flying in a single engine Cessna. His love for flying started young but came to fruition through the building of radio controlled model planes and eventually, with the help of Trego Aviation, led to his first solo flight in 1993. Dan was a lifelong learner who had a passion for reading and brewing the perfect cup of coffee. He was a compassionate, caring, physician who left big shoes to fill when forced to retire after a bout with cancer. After a brutal protocol, by God’s grace, medical technology and Dan’s desire to survive, he beat cancer. Beating cancer meant he was able to spend lots of quality time walking 3-5 miles (almost) every day, sitting on the patio with a cup of coffee enjoying his natural surroundings (especially bird watching) and getting to spoil both of his grandsons - who he is survived by.

He is also survived by his wife, 2 daughters, 2 brothers, many nieces and nephews, in-laws, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, beloved sister, and a nephew. We recognize that this is more verbose than Dr. Dan would have ever been (those of you who knew him know what we mean) but we felt his life and legacy warranted it. In lieu of a memorial or donation, if inclined and weather permits, enjoy a walk in the early evening (but before the news) as Dr. Dan would have.&nbsp;&nbsp;

(Adams) Olson. Janice attended and graduated from McCook High School in 1966.&nbsp;

Barbara Jean Garner of North Platte passed away at Bryan Health in 
Lincoln on April 19, 2023, at the age of 76. 
Barbara was born in Kearney to Raymond and Ruth Dage on July 7, 1946.&nbsp; 
After graduating from Kearney High School, Barbara attended Kearney 
State Teachers College for two years then went to Lincoln General 
Hospital School of Nursing where she received her RN diploma.&nbsp; Barbara 
had a long career in nursing which began at Good Samaritan Hospital. 
On April 25, 1970, Barbara was united in marriage to William Garner in 
Kearney.&nbsp; They moved to Colorado in 1976 and lived in Golden and other 
places in the metro area.&nbsp; While in Colorado, Barbara worked at the 
Swedish Medical Center for most of her career.&nbsp; She was mainly in ER, 
but also worked in ICU, on the GI and Orthopedic Floors, and Oncology.&nbsp; 
She retired from the Arapahoe G.I. Clinic. 
Barbara and Bill eventually moved to North Platte where they were 
members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.&nbsp; Barbara enjoyed showing 
Rottweilers at dog shows and loved being a nurse.&nbsp; She had great care 
and compassion for others. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Raymond, Jr.; sister,

Frances Lucille Burch, age 85, formerly of North Platte, peacefully

Frances was born to Melzar "Red" and Opal Barnes on July 6, 1937, in 
North Platte where she grew up.&nbsp; After graduating from N.P.H.S. in 1955 
she did a lot of traveling then returned home and met Ervin Burch.&nbsp; The 
couple wed on January 6, 1968, and raised 7 children, Douglas, Sheila, 
Steven, Tom, Kathy, Carol and Junior, together. 
Frances was a member of the Berean Church and active in Campfire as an 
assistant leader.&nbsp; She was a wonderful seamstress and enjoyed playing 
cards.&nbsp; She loved spending time with her family and friends, and 
especially loved her 17 grandchildren, her many great-grandchildren and 
her nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Frances will always be in the hearts of her 
family and forever missed. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin; her parents, Melzar and Opal Barnes; brother, Robert Barnes; and stepdaughter, Kathy (Leon) Lott.

Carol LaVona (Hanson) Petersen passed away at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg on Wednesday, April 19th, 2023, She was 96.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 21, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at 
Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg with Pastor Brenda Pfeifly 
officiating. Organist will be Diana Johnson. Musical selections will be 
“What A Friend We Have In Jesus”, “How Great Thou Art”, and “Victory In 
Jesus.” Pallbearers will be Zane Petersen, Zach Petersen, Corey 
Petersen, Nathan Mastel, Noah Mastel, and Adam O’Rourke. Interment will 
be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Carol was born August 9, 1926, in rural Stromsburg to Andrew and Alma 
(Swanson) Hanson, both immigrants from Sweden. Carol graduated from 
Stromsburg High School in 1943 and then attended business school in 
Omaha. She worked as a secretary at Britannica Books and the Butternut 
Bread Companies, both in Omaha. Carol and Glenn Petersen were married on
 February 3, 1946, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Osceola, Nebraska. 
They lived in rural Bayard, Nebraska for one year and then moved to 
rural Stromsburg. Carol and Glenn had four children. Kay, Colin, 
Kristine (who died at age ten), and Jamalee. Carol’s family was the 
central focus of her life. She was devoted to her children and later her
 nine grandchildren and enjoyed attending their many events and 
performances.

Carol was an active member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg
 participating in the Lutheran Ladies Circle, as a church board member, 
church quilting group member, and as a representative to the Lutheran 
Brotherhood. She was also a member of the Extension Club, the Square 
Dance Club, the Women’s Civic Improvement Club, and helped with Senior 
Center activities. Carol always had a garden and each fall she was busy 
canning and freezing the produce she had grown. Carol was the secretary 
for the Principal at Stromsburg High School before working from 
1964-1987 as the bookkeeper at the Stromsburg Co-op. Many memories were 
created with the other employees, customers, neighbors, and friends. 
Carol enjoyed being an active participant in decision making and 
accounting on the farm which she loved.

Carol and Glenn enjoyed traveling both in the U.S. and Europe with 
friends and family. One of their biggest adventures was traveling to 
Sweden and Denmark to meet Carol’s and Glenn’s relatives that still 
lived there.

Carol enjoyed keeping the family history alive in photographs, and 
was an excellent hostess for large family dinners and holidays. She was 
an excellent cook and would often ask family members to “take a taste” 
to make sure everything was just perfect before serving it at the table.
 Ostkaka and Swedish Tea Ring were just a couple of her specialties!

Carol embraced life fully. She loved her Savior, Jesus, and her family and friends.

Carol is survived by daughters, Kay Mastel of Seward, Jami (Mark) 
Mendenhall of North Platte, son, Colin (LeAnn) Petersen of Stromsburg, 
eight grandchildren, Nathan (Kathy) Mastel, Noah (Barb) Mastel all of 
Lincoln, Zane (Michelle) Petersen of Stromsburg, Zach (Emily) Petersen 
of Hill City, South Dakota, Corey (Megan) Petersen of Burnsville, 
Minnesota, Emily (Brock) Wurl, and Katelyn (Josh) Sperle all of North 
Platte, and Adam (Emily Powell) O’Rourke of Centennial, Colorado, twenty
 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces, 
nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Glenn in 2000, 
daughter Kristine in 1964, two sons-in-law, Leo Mastel and James 
O’Rourke, brothers, Myron, Raymond, and Milton Hanson, two sisters, 
Francis Holm, and Irene Adelson and two granddaughters, Ellen (Petersen)
 Douglas and Angela (Dendy) Petersen.

Sutton, NE., resident Alyce Mary Leininger, 93, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2023, at her home in Sutton.

conducted at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 21, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic

 Born on February 23, 1930, Alyce was the daughter of Fred and Etta 
Leininger and grew up on a farm near Sutton. She attended Sutton High 
School and went on to attend Marymount College in Salina, Kansas for one
 year, before embarking on a career in teaching that would span over 40 
years. After Marymount, Alyce taught school in Kearney and 
North Platte, Nebraska. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with an 
elementary education major from Kearney State College. She then began 
teaching first-grade pupils in the Lincoln, Nebraska, public schools. 
 While teaching, Alyce earned her master’s degree in elementary 
education from the University of Nebraska. She taught at McPhee 
Elementary School (next to the State Capitol), in Lincoln, Lancaster 
County, Nebraska. McPhee was associated with the University of Nebraska 
in Lincoln, using the school to train students working towards a degree 
in education. The room's walls were made of glass, so that the UNL 
students could observe the teachers’ teaching methods. Alyce was known 
for her innovative teaching methods and served as a mentor for aspiring 
educators. After retiring in 1990, Alyce returned to her 
parent’s farm in Sutton, where she lovingly cared for her mother Etta, 
until Etta’s death in 1999 at the age of 99. Throughout her 
life, Alyce was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 
Sutton and served in the Altar Society. She was an avid gardener, coach,
 singer, sewer, and crafter, and her family and friends fondly remember 
her joyous demeanor and many talents. We enjoyed her homemade angel food
 cakes and rhubarb custard pies for our birthdays, and her sweet 
potatoes during the holidays. She tended to her beautiful flower gardens
 spread over most of the family’s farmstead. She especially loved roses 
and hollyhocks. She coached summer softball teams in Sutton for many 
years. She sang with The Melodears of Hastings (a barbershop chorus of 
about 25 women). She served as a mentor for the TeamMate Mentoring 
Program within the Sutton public schools. She attended Cornhusker 
Football games and was a season ticket holder from 1958 to 2022. In her 
93 years, Alyce touched the lives, of countless individuals throughout 
her career in education and her involvement in her community. She will 
be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in 
death by her parents Fred and Etta (Lohmeier) Leininger, and her 
siblings Marguerite (Oscar) Rodgers, Lynn Leininger, Gene (Dona) 
Leininger, Max (Regina) Leininger, Anthony Leininger, Ken Leininger, Leo
 (Delores) Leininger, Duane Rasby, and Jacqueline (Richard) Ochsner. 
 She is survived by her sister Joan Rasby of Sutherland, Nebraska, her 
brother Steve (Marcia) Leininger of Sutton, Nebraska, sister-in-law Ann 
Leininger of Wyoming, and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

educators. After retiring in 1990, Alyce returned to her 
parent’s farm in Sutton, where she lovingly cared for her mother Etta, 
until Etta’s death in 1999 at the age of 99. Throughout her 
life, Alyce was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 
Sutton and served in the Altar Society. She was an avid gardener, coach,
 singer, sewer, and crafter, and her family and friends fondly remember 
her joyous demeanor and many talents. We enjoyed her homemade angel food
 cakes and rhubarb custard pies for our birthdays, and her sweet 
potatoes during the holidays. She tended to her beautiful flower gardens
 spread over most of the family’s farmstead. She especially loved roses 
and hollyhocks. She coached summer softball teams in Sutton for many 
years. She sang with The Melodears of Hastings (a barbershop chorus of 
about 25 women). She served as a mentor for the TeamMate Mentoring 
Program within the Sutton public schools. She attended Cornhusker 
Football games and was a season ticket holder from 1958 to 2022. In her 
93 years, Alyce touched the lives, of countless individuals throughout 
her career in education and her involvement in her community. She will 
be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in 
death by her parents Fred and Etta (Lohmeier) Leininger, and her 
siblings Marguerite (Oscar) Rodgers, Lynn Leininger, Gene (Dona) 
Leininger, Max (Regina) Leininger, Anthony Leininger, Ken Leininger, Leo
 (Delores) Leininger, Duane Rasby, and Jacqueline (Richard) Ochsner. 
 She is survived by her sister Joan Rasby of Sutherland, Nebraska, her 
brother Steve (Marcia) Leininger of Sutton, Nebraska, sister-in-law Ann 
Leininger of Wyoming, and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Georgia Jeannette Johnson of Cozad died Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Meadowlark Pointe in Cozad, Nebraska at the age of 87. She was born on November 8, 1935, in Eustis, daughter of George and Frieda (Schaaf) Roether, was raised in the rural Eustis area and attended school in the Village of Eustis.

On January 3, 1954, she married Jerry Johnson. They had a joyful relationship for 58 years before the passing of Jerry in 2012. If you asked her, she would say that her primary purpose in life was to be a mother of her seven children. She taught them how to be hard working servants, but most of all showed them how to love and enjoy family. She worked with her husband for many years at Johnson TV &amp; Radio, taking care of the accounting and assisting customers. She was a dedicated member of the American Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her children; sons, Terry and Marla Johnson of Houston, Texas, Tim and Karen Johnson of Coralville, Iowa, and Bobby and Jeri Johnson of Cozad; daughters, Marge (Johnson) and Stan Finnell of Cozad, Marcia (Johnson) Hester of Hastings and Rhonda (Johnson) and Bruce Guthard of Litchfield; brother, Gene and Marlene Roether of Eustis; sisters Gloria Roether of Cozad, and Glenda (Roether) and Roger Neill of Cozad. Other survivors include; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerry, infant daughter Patty-Sue, and brother Glenn.

Cecelia R. “Cece” Allison, 83, of Stapleton, Nebraska, passed away February 15, 2023 at Great Plains Health in North Platte.&nbsp; She was born November 20, 1939 to George and Florence (Rayer) Neumann in Indianola, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Cecelia was united in marriage to Wallace “Wally” Allison on February 27, 1960 in Indianola.&nbsp; She was a graduate of Indianola High School, McCook College, Chadron State College with her B.S. and her M.A. from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.&nbsp; Cecelia taught at numerous schools in Nebraska, Kansas and Arizona, spending 9 years in the Stapleton/Ringgold area.&nbsp; She taught elementary, K-12 Gifted and Media students.&nbsp; She retired from teaching to take care of Wally during his last years.&nbsp; Cecelia was part of the Opela Outpost Antique Store from 2019 to present, member of the Teachers Association, NEA, NSEA and Alter Society.&nbsp; A couple of Cece's hobbies were going to casinos and thrift stores.&nbsp; She loved birds, her dogs, antiques and she had a photographic memory.&nbsp; She will be remembered for being extremely sharp and feisty, and may have had an opinion or two.

Kevin Michael Salisbury, 68, of Arnold, NE passed away unexpectedly on April 18, 2023.&nbsp; He was born to Franklin Wayne and Vivian (Merritt) Salisbury on July 27, 1954 in North Platte.

Mike grew up on his family’s ranch outside of Stapleton, Nebraska. He graduated from Stapleton High School in 1973. During his life he was a rancher, a John Deere mechanic, and a long-haul truck driver. In his earlier years he loved flying his airplane.&nbsp; He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife Debra of Arnold; daughters, Tanya (Tyler) Redden of Imperial, Melissa Salisbury of North Platte; sons, Josh Salisbury of Omaha and Brandon (Michelle) Salisbury of Aurora; stepchildren, Justin (Angelo) Beans of Boston, MA and Lisa (Alex) Duwe of Akron, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sister, Patricia Ann Guzis of North Liberty, Iowa; nieces, Marci (Tim) Gubbels of Waverly, NE and Kristi (Peter) Fleischmann of Iowa City, Iowa; brothers in law and sisters in law, Linda Eckhoff, Barb Hird, Linda Minnick, Diane (Jim) Martenson, and Mike (Nancy) Eckhoff; numerous cousins and several great nephews and a great niece as well as his trucking buddies.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Jody enjoyed carpentry and playing softball for Hillcrest Nursing Home on McCook city softball league, painting pictures, word puzzles and gardening. She loved to make quilts, too many to count, if she knew you, you probably would have one. She raffled several for Doak Contruction Fast Pitch soft ball team. Jody also enjoyed all the time spent with family and friends on Facebook.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Georgia "Jody" Kirby (1935-2022)

Fred Land Jr. died at his home north of Hershey on January 22, 2023, at the age of 70.

Fred was born to Fred Sr. and Peggy Land on September 12, 1952, at Sutherland. He grew up on the family ranch north of Hershey and graduated from Sutherland High School.

Fred worked on the family ranch, drove a truck, worked for the Village of Sutherland, and did various jobs throughout his life.

He married Marilyn Swedberg and they had a son, Eric, then later divorced. Fred eventually moved back to the family ranch and lived there until his death. In his free time he enjoyed reading books.

Fred was preceded in death by his father and brother-in-law, George Loving Jr.

Survivors include his mother, Peggy Land, and sister, Victoria Loving of North Platte; son, Eric Land of Clifton, CO; grandchildren, Andrew and Erica; and other family.

Fred Land Jr. (1952-2023)

&nbsp; Maxine M. Kolste, 97, passed away peacefully in Louisville, NE, on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023. She will be remembered as a loving and dedicated wife, mother, mother-in-law, daughter, sister, and grandmother. Maxine was born to Carl and Velma (Hill) Schnuerle on March 27, 1926, in Almena, Kansas. She graduated from Almena High School in 1944, and from Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1946. Maxine married Loren C. Kolste, in Denver, Colorado, on October 23, 1948. They enjoyed a loving marriage for nearly 50 years before Loren's death in 1997. The couple moved to Ogallala, Nebraska, in 1953, where they built their forever home and embarked on the great joy of Maxine's life - raising their three children. She lived independently in their home until late 2021. Maxine truly enjoyed raising her family in western Nebraska. Maxine and Loren were avid golfers and spent many summers playing at Ogallala Country Club with their family and friends. The Kolste's loved boating on Lake McConaughy and teaching their children and grandchildren how to waterski. Maxine's bridge clubs, Church Circle, and neighbors played an important role in forming the loyal friendships with many special women in her community that she enjoyed for nearly 75 years. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where she served on numerous boards and taught Bible and Sunday school. Maxine filled leadership roles in the Ogallala community during her children's formative years by serving as a Girl Scout Leader and Den Mother. She was a skilled seamstress and loved creating clothing and costumes for her children and their friends. Her elegant and understated style was evident in many aspects of her life, such as her family's mid-century modern home, color-coordinated flower beds, and her timeless wardrobe. Maxine was remarkable in every way. She served as a role model to her children and grandchildren through her quiet wisdom, positive and unassuming attitude, and her generosity. The care and love she shared with others will continue to be felt for generations to come. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Loren; a son, Rex; a great-grandson, William Edward Hardin; her parents, Carl and Velma Schnuerle; a brother, Wayne Schnuerle; a sister, Lola Williams; and her in-laws, Art and Ann Kolste. Maxine Marie Kolste (1926-2023)

Warren “Murray” Cecil, 57, passed away on April 17, 2023, at UNMC in Omaha, surrounded by his family.&nbsp; He was born to Warren and Eileen (Waterman) Cecil on April 3, 1966 at the Naval Base in San Diego, CA, where his dad was stationed at the time.&nbsp;

Murray was raised in North Platte where he attended Cody Elementary, Adams Junior High, and NPHS, graduating with the class of 1984.&nbsp; In 1990, he married Shari Gleason, spending 36 years annoying each other.&nbsp; They were the love of each other’s lives.&nbsp; Murray furthered his education and received his LPN in 2000 from MPCC.

He was one of the funniest, most generous people you could ever meet.&nbsp; Murray was a practical joker and delighted in teasing his family and friends.&nbsp; He was a busy man, holding many positions throughout his life, including, bartender, cook, nurse, administrator, and most recently, shop manager at Janssens, as well as the host of “Saturday’s with Murdog” on Rock 100.&nbsp; Murray was an avid golfer and loved to cook for his family; he made the most amazing Chinese food, cheesecakes, and truffles.&nbsp; He enjoyed celebrating the Fourth of July, going fishing, and watching and quoting Mel Brooks movies.&nbsp; Murray was raised in the Wesleyan Church and later returned to his Faith at Harvest Christian Fellowship.&nbsp; Murray knew Jesus.

Those who “frogged out” before Murray include his father, Warren Lee Cecil; mother, Eileen M. Waterman; grandparents, John and Edna Waterman; cousin, Aaron Kafka; mother-in-law, Betty Gleason; and several “best dogs”.

In his early life, Matthew became an eagle scout and loved camping and hiking while living in the beautiful town of Eureka, California. Outside was where Matthew always wanted to be, and the beaches and mountains of northern California called him outside. Outside is where you experience life. You would never find him stuck in an office or in front of a TV or playing video games.&nbsp; He loved everything about the outdoors.&nbsp; Any free time he had; he was camping. In 2002, Matthew moved from California to Pennsylvania with his parents. He attended Pennsylvania State University. After graduation, Matthew was accepted at Pennsylvania State College of Medicine earning his Medical Doctorate in 2010.&nbsp; The day after graduation he married the love of his life, Kaitlin.

Together, Matthew and Kaitlin moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where he started his surgical residency training at St. Luke's Hospital.&nbsp; Dr. Matthew Jansen completed a 5 year general surgical residency at St. Lukes's Hospital. During his residency, Dr. Jansen developed this desire to move to a small town that needed a surgeon, where his skills could be used to save lives. He wanted to save lives. He found and chose Sidney, Nebraska. Matthew loved Nebraska and in 2015 he accepted a position with the surgical staff at Sidney Regional Hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp; Matthew was at home on the prairie just like he was in the mountains of Northern California and Pennsylvania, as long as it was outside, anything is ok.

Nebraska quickly became Matthew and Kaitlin's forever home. They started a small farm and a family: 4 girls. Together they became very active in the local community and everything to do with the outside. He was constantly working on outside projects with Kaitlin and the girls. He planted fruit trees and grew all kinds of vegetables, fish, horses, cows, pigs, and even bananas. He grew bananas in Nebraska! Every free weekend you would find him and his girls camping. Enjoying the outdoors where life is at.

Matthew's mother always called him a “deep thinker”. He would think and think about a problem until he could find an answer. He did that in medicine and on his small farm. He loved finding the answers. In 2017 his parents joined his family in Sidney. This is where they wanted to live, together working and spending time outside. Matthew loved his family, wife, and girls. He cherished his girls. He loved his small farm, his way of “farm” life in Sidney, and raising his girls in our great country, America.

God has called his “deep thinker” home and we can not question that. His love of God, family, country, and farm life in Sidney will carry on. Matthew leaves behind his 4 girls: Lilly, Eva, Eleanor, and Adaline. He also leaves behind his dear Kaitlin. He is survived by his sister Jessica and parents Martha and David Jansen.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Robert E. “Bob” Brunswick, age 64, lost his battle with cancer on December 22, 2022 at his home in McCook with his family by his side.&nbsp; He was born to Mable (Leonard) Brunswick (Skuldt) on February 11, 1958 in Duluth, Minnesota.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Bob worked most of his life in the oil fields in Kansas and Nebraska, until the late 80’s when he started driving a semi to be closer to home.&nbsp; He liked to spend time hunting and fishing.&nbsp; Bob also enjoyed motorcycles, gardening, watching the Nebraska Cornhuskers play, and a nice classic car.&nbsp; But most of all, he loved his grandchildren; he loved being a Papa and spending time with them, especially on Christmas.

&nbsp; &nbsp; He was preceded in death by his mother, Mable Skuldt and his daughter, Lacey Brunswick.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Bob is survived by his daughters: Stephanie Olson of Twin Falls, Idaho; Crystal (Jeff) Quiggle of Twin Falls, Idaho; Nichole Knappert of McCook; and Stacey Brunswick of McCook; four granddaughters: Bailey, Isabella “Bella”, Cora, and Samantha; four grandsons: Isaac, Ashton, Wyatt, and Antonio; one great-grandson, Gabriel; siblings: Betty Jo Booth of Nampa, Idaho; Pam (Brian) Wallace of Tallahassee, Florida; and Debbie (Dennis) Hall of Smithville, Missouri; four nieces and three nephews; and David Blankenship of Huntsville, Tennessee; as well as numerous cousins and many friends.

Robert E. Brunswick (1958-2022)

Graveside service with military honors has been scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at the Johnson Cemetery, Johnson, NE.

Leland&nbsp;J. Cox&nbsp;was born to Charles and Mildred Cox on November 13, 1952, in Auburn, NE. He passed from this life on January 10, 2023, while recuperating from an illness at the Sutherland Care Center.

Leland grew up on a farm outside of Johnson, NE, with his two older sisters and graduated from high school in 1971. While in school he was involved in football, track, band and theater. He traveled with the band "We Three" playing drums for several years, then joined the Army in 1974.

After his discharge in 1977 he returned home to Johnson for a few years then moved to Sutherland, NE where he was employed by NPPD for over 30 years.

Leland married Gayla Richards on June 10, 2012, at son Joshua's country home. The couple lived in the Sandhills where Lee enjoyed team roping, working with his horses, playing drums again, and spending time with his neighbors and family. He retired in 2018 and moved to Brock, NE; then to be closer to kids and grandkids, moved to Wilsonville, NE.

Leland was a devoted father and grandpa who loved playing music and watching his boys rodeo and the grandkids participate in all their different activities. He had a lifelong love of bird hunting that started when he was a child hunting with his father. Lee had hunting dogs most of his life and loved camping on the Platte River in Wyoming. A highlight of his life was when, as a sanctioned umpire, he was selected to officiate the 12 and Under National Softball Championships at Shawnee, KS.

Lee was a very skilled and talented man. He could make anything out of wood, and he made jewelry boxes (each one unique) for all seven of his granddaughters when they turned 12. As a wine maker, he experimented with various fruits to see what made the best wine and then shared it with family and friends.

Leland was a man who loved life. He was a wonderful husband and friend who left us all too soon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mildred, and sister, Lavon Huneke.

Leland is survived by his loving wife, Gayla; sons, Joshua (Jennifer) Cox of North Platte, NE and Jake Cox of Sutherland, NE; stepsons, Derek Richards of Powell, TN, and Darren (Aileen) Richards of Vona, CO; his sister, Linda (Darrell) Hopper of Nemaha, NE; brother-in-law, Leonard Huneke of Rapid City, SD; seven granddaughters who adored their grandpa and a grandson who loved spending time with him; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 </figure>Graveside service with military honors has been scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at the Johnson Cemetery, Johnson, NE.Leland&nbsp;J. Cox&nbsp;was born to Charles and Mildred Cox on November 13, 1952, in Auburn, NE. He passed from this life on January 10, 2023, while recuperating from an illness at the Sutherland Care Center.Leland grew up on a farm outside of Johnson, NE, with his two older sisters and graduated from high school in 1971. While in school he was involved in football, track, band and theater. He traveled with the band "We Three" playing drums for several years, then joined the Army in 1974.After his discharge in 1977 he returned home to Johnson for a few years then moved to Sutherland, NE where he was employed by NPPD for over 30 years.Leland married Gayla Richards on June 10, 2012, at son Joshua's country home. The couple lived in the Sandhills where Lee enjoyed team roping, working with his horses, playing drums again, and spending time with his neighbors and family. He retired in 2018 and moved to Brock, NE; then to be closer to kids and grandkids, moved to Wilsonville, NE.Leland was a devoted father and grandpa who loved playing music and watching his boys rodeo and the grandkids participate in all their different activities. He had a lifelong love of bird hunting that started when he was a child hunting with his father. Lee had hunting dogs most of his life and loved camping on the Platte River in Wyoming. A highlight of his life was when, as a sanctioned umpire, he was selected to officiate the 12 and Under National Softball Championships at Shawnee, KS.Lee was a very skilled and talented man. He could make anything out of wood, and he made jewelry boxes (each one unique) for all seven of his granddaughters when they turned 12. As a wine maker, he experimented with various fruits to see what made the best wine and then shared it with family and friends.Leland was a man who loved life.
