Kids Klub celebrates after-school professionals week

HERSHEY, NE - The Hershey Fall Fest committee announced Friday morning that red dirt band Muscadine Bloodline will headline the annual festival on Saturday, August 26 downtown Hershey. North Platte's Drew Phillips Band will open for Muscadine Bloodline. The Hershey Fall Festival is the annual end of summer event for the community of Hershey, Nebraska. The event draws individuals from many of the surrounding communities, as well as former Hershey residents that have moved out of the area.

The Fall Festival typically kids off with a golf tournament at Rivers Edge Golf Course in North Platte on Friday evening, then breakfast, Parade and the concert on Saturday. The Hershey Lions Club hosts the festival, and uses their funds to help support local nonprofits, put on vision and health screenings for the students at Hershey Public Schools at no cost to the school or the students, and to provide vision screens and glasses for members of Lincoln County that cannot afford eye care.

The seventh annual Guardians of the Children Family Appreciation Day will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at D&amp;N Event Center, 501 E. Walker Road in North Platte.

The day will feature&nbsp; free food and games, bike giveaways and cake walks.

Proceeds from the event will be used to further the mission of the Guardians of the Children Flat Rock Chapter.

NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte Noon Rotary Club is hosing their annual Bloodhounds Blood Drive on Wednesday, April 19 from 11am-6pm at Venue 304 downtown North Platte. To date, 2,298 units of blood have been collected in 19 years of this blood drive according to Misty Robertson who is a noon rotarian, and spoke to the Post during a North Platte Kubota podcast last week.

Robertson says one of the cool parts about this particular blood drive is "the competition between organizations". Many have already created a team to collect blood on behalf of area non-profits, and Robertson said "you can start a team at the door if you'd like". The top 3 teams with the most donars on their behalf will get prize money to donate to a cause of that teams choosing. Patrick Jacobson who also joined Eagle's Derek Beck on FM 98.1 to talk about this event said another group he's a part of "North Platte Young Professionals" would donate their winnings to Debra's Legacy if they place in the top 3 in team donations.

BRULE — Keith County Area Development has announced a call to artists for the 2023 Mural Project to bring artists and
local communities together to create a more vibrant Keith County. 

Art in public
places plays an important role in preserving our culture, conveying the history
of our community, and beautifying the place we call home. 

The goal of the Mural
Project is to support the creation of murals throughout Keith County to promote
the creative expression of the artist and to provide an enriching visual
experience for residents and visitors as a quality of place enhancement.

<b>North Platte Kubota Podcast with KCAD's Molly Jeffres</b>

The 2023 mural site location is Brule, Nebraska’s beautiful
Barton Park. Many locals and travelers alike frequent Barton Park for picnics
and family events. The mural will be painted on an existing structure in the
park. . The key elements for the 2023 mural project will be ‘beauty, nature,
and creativity’ which are based on the First Impressions Mural Survey taken by
Brule residents. ‘Beauty, nature, and creativity’ were the top-rated values of
the survey respondents and will be used to guide the artist’s inspiration for
the project. This project stems from the “First Impressions” priorities
identified during the 2020 Keith County Community Vision Planning process. It
is being pursued thanks to generous funding raised during the 2022 Keith County
Big Give and a grant from the Keith County Foundation Fund.

This is Keith County Area Development’s second mural
project. Mural project information is available on Keith County Area
Development’s website at kcad.org/mural. Artist applications may be submitted
online or by mail and are due April 30, 2023. . Keith County Area Development

🎙️ Keith County mural project looking for artists for 2023 mural

NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte City Council met in regular session Tuesday night. Rich Rasta and Briar Berger were reappointed to the North Platte Library board. The council also approved hiring Marvin Planning Consultants to help with a comprehensive plan and a new housing plan. Councilman Ty Lucas talked about keeping North Platte’s housing plan current.&nbsp;

“Our comprehensive plan is over 10 years old. And our last housing study was in 2018. And what's interesting is, if a developer comes to our community who's interested in working here who isn't local and doesn't have the&nbsp;familiarity that the local developers do, the first thing they ask you for is the housing study and the comprehensive plan," he said. "It's also important to have some common direction as a community locally. When it comes to any federal or state grant money, those plans are extremely important.” 

Lucas added that Judy Clark, director of the housing authority, had actually had trouble&nbsp;finding firms who would do the study.&nbsp;

“There's so much work going on in the state that the last time we did a housing plan, maybe we had 11 proposals, and I think this time we had maybe less than three so you can tell there's a lot going on in state.”&nbsp;

Kubota Podcast - North Platte City Council

The council also held a public hearing last night about awarding TIF money to Wilkinson Development to develop and build a new Fat Dogs Truck Stop and office buildings at the Interstate 80 179 exit adjacent to Newberry access on the north side of the interstate, according to North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher. 

“Well, I'm just excited that we have a local developer that's going to develop not only a Truck-Stop but also potentially another hotel and also continue to establish their regional operation," Kelliher said. "Their (Wilkinson Development) headquarters is right here in North Platte. They’re&nbsp;planning to build another building out there to run their headquarters out of and that's all jobs in our community. Those are local people who spend their money here — they buy houses, they buy their groceries, they spend all that money here, right here in North Platte. 

"It's not a truck stop that sends most of its money off to some other community. And don't get me wrong. We appreciate every truck stop we have. They&nbsp;provide jobs and provide services. But anytime you can promote your local companies growing and bettering themselves it makes your town a better place.”&nbsp;

Councilman Lucas said he didn’t think this area would ever be developed, if it wasn’t for a project like this. 

“I didn't know if I would ever see that quadrant developed in my lifetime. And I'm pretty excited about that," he said. "It took tremendous foresight by the chamber and development corporation because when they were working on a proposed site for what later became known as Sustainable Beef, they had the foresight to include this area in the blight substandard study to get it designated to be TIF-eligible. When that was accomplished and we talked about that a lot at the time at the council recognizing that this creates an opportunity for this quarter to be developed. I will never be convinced that that area would ever have been developed without tremendous assistance. I frankly can't be more excited that, first it's a local company headquartered here; and second, I think their ask was conservative and reasonable for the assistance they need to pull it off.”&nbsp;

The next step for the project will be a return to the Community Redevelopment Authority for finalization of the plan, and a contract that would need to be signed. Wilkinson Development would be free at that time to collect bonds and break ground which they hope to do by the end of the year.&nbsp;

"Their (Wilkinson Development) headquarters is right here in North Platte. They’re&nbsp;planning to build another building out there to run their headquarters out of and that's all jobs in our community. Those are local people who spend their money here — they buy houses, they buy their groceries, they spend all that money here, right here in North Platte. </p><p>"It's not a truck stop that sends most of its money off to some other community. And don't get me wrong. We appreciate every truck stop we have. They&nbsp;provide jobs and provide services. But anytime you can promote your local companies growing and bettering themselves it makes your town a better place.”&nbsp;</p><figure>

                    </figure><p>Councilman Lucas said he didn’t think this area would ever be developed, if it wasn’t for a project like this. </p><p>“I didn't know if I would ever see that quadrant developed in my lifetime. And I'm pretty excited about that," he said. "It took tremendous foresight by the chamber and development corporation because when they were working on a proposed site for what later became known as Sustainable Beef, they had the foresight to include this area in the blight substandard study to get it designated to be TIF-eligible. When that was accomplished and we talked about that a lot at the time at the council recognizing that this creates an opportunity for this quarter to be developed. I will never be convinced that that area would ever have been developed without tremendous assistance. I frankly can't be more excited that, first it's a local company headquartered here; and second, I think their ask was conservative and reasonable for the assistance they need to pull it off.”&nbsp;</p><p>The next step for the project will be a return to the Community Redevelopment Authority for finalization of the plan, and a contract that would need to be signed. Wilkinson Development would be free at that time to collect bonds and break ground which they hope to do by the end of the year.&nbsp;</p>

At its meeting Tuesday, the North Platte City Council advanced the effort to remodel the Recreation Center and Cody Pool by choosing an architect to lead the project.

Omaha-based RDG Planning &amp; Design was chosen to lead the remodeling and expansion projects.

"RDG brings a wealth of expertise to the project, boasting 30 years of experience in the planning and design of sports and recreational facilities across the region, including facilities in Kearney and Omaha&lt;' the city said in a release Wednesday. "RDG recognizes the integral part that local architects and contractors&nbsp;play, and&nbsp;has assembled a project team with numerous North Platte businesses and connections."

“As the city reviewed the outstanding candidates that proposed to undertake this project, we were committed to making a decision that focused on three criteria,” said Mayor Brandon Kelliher. “First, we wanted to make the wisest use of funds. Next, we wanted to work with a firm who is a leader in sports and recreational facilities. Lastly, we wanted to ensure that our outstanding local businesses were utilized during the design and construction process. RDG has demonstrated that their vision and priorities for the execution of this project align with these criteria.”&nbsp;

RDG is partnering with local architects and contractors on the project team. North Platte Architects, Steele’s Roofing &amp; Construction, T.C. Engineering Inc., and Wayne&nbsp;Dowhower Construction Inc., are all on the project team, in addition to:

• Sampson Construction for cost estimating<br>• Engineering Technologies Inc. for mechanical and electrical engineering<br>• Performance Engineering for structural engineering<br>•Aquatic Design Consultants Inc. for swimming pool consulting

Two of ETI’s engineers assigned to the project are North Platte natives.&nbsp;

The design process will continue through early 2024, with anticipated construction set to begin early in the second quarter of 2024.&nbsp;

The process of accepting bids for the project began in January of 2023, after North Platte voters approved a temporary half-cent sales tax increase in November of 2022. The additional sales tax will go into effect this&nbsp;spring and will help raise $52.5 million to make improvements at the Recreation Center and Cody Pool, as well as relocate the Skate Park.&nbsp;
