When Avery Johnson is on the attack, opponents be weary. This 5'10 middle hitter out of Maywood-Hayes center may speak softly but she carries a pretty big stick.&nbsp; As a senior for the Wolves she was second on the team with 269 kills, and first on the team with a 41.2 Kill percentage. She helped lead the squad to a 27-3 season that ended in the district finals.&nbsp; She's excited to join a Knights squad who has been Region IX champs two years in a row but hasnt been able to solve District G play yet. Avery thinks she can help get the team over the hump.&nbsp;

Coach Alexa McCall has had her eye on Johnson since a summer camp and was excited by her tryout:&nbsp;

Knights volleyball has added three girls so far,&nbsp;Allie Schneider a setter and right-side hitter from&nbsp;Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family and Madi&nbsp;Neely, a middle hitter from Broken Bow.

The next year football classifications have come out from the NSAA.&nbsp; Over half of Class A schools this upcoming season will make the playoffs.&nbsp; There is one school that is opting down to Class B (South Sioux City) and will miss the playoffs this season. Two area schools go from 6-man to 8-man (Sandhills Valley and Maywood-Hayes Center) while two area schools drop from 8-man to 6-man (Paxton and Wallace) The entire list with ineligible and playoff numbers is below:&nbsp;

The general admission ticket books contain 10 tickets for the CWS, which will run June 13 through June 23 or 24 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. Cost is $95 plus fees. 

Printed GA ticket books that might be given as holiday gifts can be ordered for standard shipping rates through Tuesday. For overnight delivery, they must be ordered by Thursday.

NPHS had seven athletes compete in the Lexington Powerlifting meet on Saturday, December 7th.  Athletes competed by weight class and complete the bench press, squat, and deadlift. Athletes are given three attempts to lift as much weight as they can in each lift. The best attempt at each lift is then added together to figure the athlete’s total pounds lifted. Athletes then earn individual medals and team points based off of their total pounds lifted.

Team totals – The Bulldogs finished in 2nd place as a team.

“I was really pleased with our efforts and that our athletes competed well. Powerlifting is a fun sport and allows athletes an opportunity to work toward personal best attempts, while also competing against other athletes.” - Todd Rice

The Bulldogs will again compete on February 1st at Omaha Creighton Prep. Prep will host the All Class RAW State Powerlifting Championship meet. 

“I hope that we can add more athletes to our team and hopefully fill more weight classes for this event. It is exciting to see the continued gains that our athletes are making in our weight program.” - Todd Rice

A longtime Miss Rodeo Nebraska member has been inducted into the Miss Rodeo America Hall of Fame.

Mardee Swanson was honored Dec. 6 during the Miss Rodeo America Pageant fashion show in Las Vegas, Nev. for her hard work and dedication to the rodeo queen world.

“When I started this journey with the MRA program in 1991, I had no idea I’d still be here,” Swanson said of the recognition. “This program tends to give you a passion to try and help young women obtain their dreams. I feel so much pride in where this organization is today.”

Swanson didn’t grow up surrounded by rodeo and pageants, but rather developed a passion for them after marrying her late husband, Swede Swanson, in 1960.

Swede began steer wrestling in the late ’60s. He eventually joined the Mid-States Rodeo Association, became a gold card member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and competed as part of the Nebraska State Rodeo Association, through which he won state championships in 1969 and 1972.

“As a little girl, I always wanted a horse, but lived in town, so it didn’t happen,” Mardee said. “When Swede started steer wrestling and bought a couple of horses, I, at the age of 26, really wanted to learn to ride. So, I became a charter member of a newly formed women’s riding club, the Velvet Spurs.”

From there, she was smitten. Mardee was elected president of the Velvet Spurs in 1972, 1973, 1995 and 1996 and co-president in 2018.

Mardee has been involved with NEBRASKAland Days, Nebraska’s official state celebration, since its inception more than 50 years ago. She joined the Buffalo Bill Rodeo Queen Committee in the early 1980s.

When the NEBRASKAland Days board was approached about moving the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant to North Platte, Mardee was instrumental in helping with that move and the formation of the current Miss Rodeo Nebraska Association in 1992.

Mardee spent the&nbsp;next decade as the MRN Association’s state delegate in addition to terms as president and chair of the scholarship committee.

She was also asked to join the NEBRASKAland Days board of directors in 1990. She served a four-year term and was elected board president in 1994.

In 2005, Mardee and Swede were honored with the Trail Boss Award from The Buffalo Bill Rodeo Committee, and in 2009, she was presented with the Dale Studley Award for her support of the NEBRASKAland Days celebration.

As for her MRA involvement, Mardee has both been a part of and chaired numerous MRA Pageant committees. She completed her sixth year on the MRA Executive Board in December of 2018. She is currently a Gold Member of the MRA National Advisory Council.

She has judged several state pageants over the years and the National High School Rodeo Queen Contest twice.

“Mardee is&nbsp;one of the hardest working people we have ever had in Miss Rodeo America,” said Tracy Damrell, fellow MRA Hall of Fame inductee. “Need help on a committee? Ask Mardee, but more likely, you won’t have to ask - she’ll volunteer.”

Damrell said Mardee’s motives for volunteering are never for accolades or attention.

“She doesn’t seek recognition. She seeks roles and responsibilities where she can make a difference,” Damrell said. “She does it because she believes in the program and the ideals of Miss Rodeo America. I can think of no more deserving honoree than her.”

Mardee believes the most precious thing she has gained through her involvement with the MRA is friendships. Those friendships, along with the satisfaction of knowing she’s helping to put young women on the path to success has made all the time and effort worth it.

“My daughter gives me a calendar every year called, ‘Women Who Do Too Much’.” Mardee said. “It has many good thoughts, and recently one day it read, ‘If I am going to do too much, I want to be sure it is about the things that matter.’ MRA does matter, and I’m proud and very humble to be selected to be inducted into the MRA Hall of Fame.”

Swanson inducted into Miss Rodeo America Hall of Fame

Last week a story broke that Red Shirt Freshman Katerian LeGrone and Andre Hunt would be facing up to 2 1/2 years suspension from the University.&nbsp; Now the two have been arrested and are facing felony charges in connection with the report of a sexual assault.&nbsp; LeGrone was taken in on a charge of first degree sexual assault while Hunt was charged with first degree aiding and abetting sexual assault according to Lincoln police.&nbsp;

The charges stem from an August 25th incident at an off-campus apartment. An unnamed female student joined both men in the apartment before reporting a rape that same evening.&nbsp;

The University was conducting its own investigation in which it determined that enough evidence existed in support of the allegations that Hunt touched and forced the woman to have oral sex before forcing her to have sex with both men. The report goes on to state that the woman provided text messages she sent to others immediately after the actions. The text messages allege that she had been raped.&nbsp;

The players only have a few days left to appeal the university decision to suspend them for the 2 1/2 years, the length the female in the report has left in her studies.&nbsp;

The North Platte Elks Lodge #985 will be holding the annual Hoop Shoot contest. They would like to invite all students ages 8 - 13 to participate. The Hoop Shoot is a basketball free throw contest in which each student is given the opportunity to shoot 25 free throws.&nbsp;

Over 2.5 million students participate in this contest nation wide every year. North Platte lodge has been holding the contest for over 40 years.&nbsp;

The winner and runner up of each age group will receive a trophy. The winners will advance to shoot at district competition. If they win at districts and continue to win they can advance to state, regional, and a national competition.&nbsp;

Annual Hoop Shoot details

Moustakas makes bank:CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds have completed a $64 million, four-year deal with former second baseman Mike Moustakas, the biggest free agent contract in Reds history. The 31-year-old infielder will plug the Reds' hole at second base, which opened when Scooter Gennett (jeh-NEHT') got hurt and then was traded at midseason. The Reds are trying to upgrade an offense that was among the National League's worst at scoring runs last season. Pedro Grifol will move from working with catchers to bench coach, Rusty Kuntz will move back to first base and Vance Wilson will shift to third base. Larry Carter is joining the big league club after working with Royals minor league players, and John Mabry and Rafael Belliard are the newcomers to the organization.

Lincoln, NE (NPPost) - News broke on Wednesday afternoon that players Andre Hunt and Katerian LeGrone were found to have violated the University of Nebraska's sexual misconduct policies and face 2 1/2 years of suspension from the University. Both players were suspended on Aug. 26th of this year and did not see any playing time because of the incident. The allegations stem from an August 25th incident in the players off-campus apartment in which an unnamed woman was invited to the apartment and taken advantage of by the players. The woman filed a report with the Lincoln Police department that night and the investigation into the incident remains open. No charges have been filed at this time. As of December 4th, the two players have seven university business days in which they can file an appeal and avoid a 2 1/2 year suspension from the university. If no appeal is filed the judgement will stand. The University decided on the length to allow the woman enough time to finish her education.

Husker football players face 2+ year suspension over alleged sexual misconduct

By NU Athletic Communications Nebraska volleyball's Lauren Stivrins, Lexi Sun and Nicklin Hames were named to the All-Big Ten First Team on Wednesday, while Madi Kubik was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and an All-Big Ten Second Team and All-Big Ten Freshman Team member. Libero Kenzie Knuckles was also selected to the All-Freshman Team by the league's head coaches.&nbsp; Stivrins was a unanimous choice for the All-Big Ten First Team. The 2018 AVCA First-Team All-American collected her second career all-conference honor after 2.57 kills per set, 1.06 blocks per set and a team-best .383 hitting percentage during the regular season. Stivrins' .412 hitting percentage in conference play was third-best in the Big Ten, and the junior middle blocker guided a Husker defense that had a league-best .156 opponent hitting percentage in Big Ten play.&nbsp; Sun earned her first career All-Big Ten honor, but her second career all-conference honor as she was an All-Big 12 first teamer at Texas in 2017. The junior outside hitter led the Huskers with 3.57 kills per set with 2.42 digs per set and a team-high 24 aces during the regular season. Sun posted double-digit kills in 18 of 20 Big Ten matches, and her 3.53 kills per set in Big Ten play ranked eighth.&nbsp; Hames collected her first All-Big Ten award after averaging 10.92 assists and 2.90 digs per set during the regular season. One of the best defensive setters in the nation, Hames recorded a team-high 15 double-doubles and also served 21 aces. Her 11.37 assists per set in Big Ten play ranked third in the conference.&nbsp; Kubik earned Nebraska's first Big Ten Freshman of the Year honor and first conference freshman of the year since Hannah Werth won the award in 2009 in the Big 12. Kubik averaged 2.73 kills and 2.52 digs per set in her first year as a Husker. She ranked fourth among Big Ten freshmen in kills (2.73 per set) and digs (2.52 per set) in conference play. The outside hitter was also named to the All-Big Ten Second Team and the All-Freshman Team. Kubik is the first Husker freshman to be named to an All-Big Ten team since Kadie Rolfzen in 2013.&nbsp; Knuckles earned All-Freshman Team accolades after leading the Huskers with 3.71 digs per set in her first year as the Huskers' libero. Five Huskers (volleyball) Earn Big Ten Honors

By NU Athletic Communications Four Nebraska offensive standouts were honored by the Big Ten Conference on Monday with all-conference recognition.&nbsp;The four offensive players to earn honorable-mention All-Big Ten accolades included junior receiver JD Spielman, junior offensive tackle Brenden Jaimes, junior running back Dedrick Mills and freshman receiver Wan'Dale Robinson.&nbsp;Spielman received honorable-mention recognition from both the conference coaches and media. He led Nebraska with 49 receptions for 898 yards and five touchdowns, ranking fifth in the Big Ten in receiving yards per game.&nbsp;In the process, Spielman became the first Husker to record three 800-yard receiving seasons.&nbsp;This marks the third straight season Spielman has earned conference honors after earning third-team All-Big Ten honors in both 2017 and 2018.&nbsp;Jaimes was also recognized by both the league coaches and media. Four Huskers Receive Conference Honors

North Platte (NPPost) - The weather outside might be frightful, but inside things are heating up for the North Platte Bulldog athletic program as the Winter sports season is about to begin. For those that didn't know, the Bulldogs compete in all the winter sports (Boys and Girls Basketball, Wrestling along with Swimming and Diving) available in Nebraska and with the calendar turning to December things are ready to get underway. On December 3rd the high school held a media day for Wrestling and Basketball (Swimming and Diving will be later when they get their suits for pictures). We had a chance to chat with some of the athletes from the sports. <h2>Boys Basketball:</h2> Coach Kaminski comes into this season losing 6 seniors, many of whom were key players over the last few years. He looks to improve on last seasons 4-16 record with a group that he says plays with more passion than he's ever seen. Although the team lost some height from last year, they picked up speed and will be very scrappy according to Kaminski. Hammond only graduated two seniors last year so he returns a core of players who are all very familiar with each other. That chemistry lead the girls to a 12-10 finish last year that included a sub-district win before losing to Crete in the District finals, just missing out on an invite to the state tournament. A trip to state is the goal for the team this year. Coach Hall has a lot of talent returning to the roster this year and looks to have the same type of success, although he would tell you that success like that comes one day, one match at a time. NPCC Knights Softball signs six athletes

Story by Brent Cobb, McCook Community College News/Sports Information McCook Community College sophomore Madison Kleewein (North Platte) has signed a national letter of intent to continue playing volleyball next year at Division II University of Arkansas-Monticello. “Arkansas-Monticello really likes the kids out of McCook and they were real interested in Maddie and she still has three years of eligibility left, and she’s graduating early,” MCC Coach Hayley Kobza said. “She still has a lot of volleyball left ahead of her and they are excited to get her on the court in January.” Kleewein becomes the third former Lady Indian to play in Monticello. Jessica Mahan, a defensive specialist (Colorado Springs) was a senior this season and was joined last season by outside hitter Megan Orth (Peyton, Colo.). Playing middle blocker and right-side hitter this season, Kleewein played in 29 matches and compiled 75 kills in 251 total attacks, averaging 1.09 kills per set. She also had 20 total blocks and 29 digs. She expects she will be a right-side hitter at UAM. Her favorite moments from this past season -- where the Lady Indians went 25-12 and won the school’s second straight Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference championship – included a season high 11-kill (.409 hitting, match against Central Community College and also the Halloween-night win in Scottsbluff over No. 17 Western Nebraska, which snapped a 58-match losing stream to the Cougars dating back to 1994. UAM competes within the Great American Conference (GAC) for ten sports. This past season the Cotton Blossoms went 11-18. “Their coach reminds me of Coach Kobza plus they have a great nursing program,” said Kleewein. “Their campus and people were so welcoming, it reminded me a lot of McCook.” She said her favorite memories from MCC include dancing on the bus trips and just hanging out with teammates in Brooks Hall. “I’m real excited that Maddie found this opportunity right away – especially since she will be finished up here in two weeks,” MCC Coach Hayley Kobza said. “Maddie’s been a great leader and a phenomenal sophomore to have,” Kobza said. The coach expects her other three sophomores to find four-year schools as well. Those players include Kiera Barr, Mallory Brown and Bailey Honn. “That’s the ultimate goal for me and my program is to get my sophomores on to the next level,” Kobza said

MCC’s Kleewein to play volleyball at Arkansas-Monticello

North Platte (NPPost) - The end of the 2019 High School Football season once again had the Bulldogs on the outside looking in at the playoffs. A place no program wants to be. No heads hang low in the weight rooms of the High School. The team had MANY accomplishments to tout at the end of the season. Firstly, Todd Rice in his second go around as Head Coach of the North Platte Bulldogs has seen marked improvement on the field in a new offensive and defensive scheme. He has also seen an uptick in ALL sports in the weight room, something he preaches day in and day out. On the field, the team improved from one win in 2018, to three wins in 2019. The margin of loss shrunk considerably and there were a few games that Coach Rice felt the team "left on the table". North Platte finished with a 3-6 record and third place finish in district play. As far as season accolades are concerned: NPHS had four athletes recognized as GNAC All Conference Football players for this past season. “GNAC All Conference selections are a strong reflection of our overall program. I am really proud of these players and they are great representatives of the continued improvement in our program." said Coach Rice. By NU Athletic CommunicationsLINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska volleyball team was selected as the No. 5 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night and will host the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds at the Bob Devaney Sports Center next weekend. The Huskers, making their 38th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, will open the tournament on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. against the Ball State Cardinals (20-11, champions of the Mid-American Conference. The 4:30 p.m. match will feature the Northern Iowa Panthers (24-10) of the Missouri Valley Conference and the Missouri Tigers (21-7) of the SEC. Friday's winners will meet on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. Baylor, Texas, Stanford and Wisconsin received the top four seeds from the NCAA Tournament committee. Should those teams all advance past the first weekend, they would host an NCAA regional the following weekend. Nebraska is in Wisconsin's region along with No. 12 national seed Hawaii and No. 13 Texas A&amp;M. The Huskers would only have an opportunity to host an NCAA regional if they advance past the opening two rounds and Wisconsin gets upset in the first or second round. Royals fans mark November 26th 2019 on your calendar. It marks the day that a new owner takes the reins of the franchise and possibly takes it in a winning direction. The 26th of November, 2019 is the day the paperwork was cleared and John Sherman officially became the new majority owner of the Kansas City Royals. Sherman has experience with the front office of a MLB franchise having worked with the Cleveland Indians as a minority shareholder and vice chairman in 2016.
