North Platte, Neb. — The aroma of chili will fill North Platte on Friday, Oct. 3, as FNBO hosts its 30th annual Chili Cook-Off, an event that has become a community tradition and raises funds for Mid-Plains United Way.

Local organizations and businesses will field teams competing for chili supremacy at 201 N. Dewey Street, with attendees able to sample entries and vote for both the best chili and best booth. Votes are purchased, with all proceeds supporting United Way programs that help local nonprofits, including Guardians of the Children and Lutheran Family Services.

“Thirty years is a huge milestone,” said Misty Robertson, FNBO Financial Advisor. “This isn’t just a cook-off—it’s a tradition that brings our whole community together to help neighbors in need.”

According to Matthew Beckman of United Way, donations stay local. “These funds go a long way to support our community here in North Platte,” Beckman said. “It’s exciting for people to get involved and see how their contributions directly impact their neighbors.”

The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with 11 chili teams registered so far and organizers hoping to reach 15. Participants will compete not only for chili accolades but also for booth presentation, with many teams decorating or adding themes to their setups.

LEXINGTON, Neb. — Two Connecticut residents are facing major drug charges in Dawson County after a Nebraska State Patrol trooper discovered more than two pounds of heroin during a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

Court records show Maribel Medina-DeQuinonez, 56, and Jose Cabrera-Mendez, 35, both of Bridgeport, Conn., were arrested Monday, Sept. 22, about three miles east of Lexington. A state trooper reported pulling over their eastbound 2020 Toyota C-HR XLE for following too closely. According to an arrest affidavit, Medina-DeQuinonez appeared nervous during the encounter, prompting the trooper to request a search of the vehicle.

The pair consented, and the search revealed what was initially described as a “kilo brick” under the rear seat. The substance field tested positive for heroin and was later weighed at 2.3 pounds, or just over 1,000 grams. Both were taken into custody and booked into the Dawson County Jail.

On Tuesday, Medina-DeQuinonez and Cabrera-Mendez appeared in Dawson County Court, where they were arraigned on charges of possession of 140 grams or more of heroin with intent to distribute and failure to affix a drug tax stamp. County Judge Jeffrey Wightman set bonds for each at 10% of $1 million. Both were appointed attorneys, and preliminary hearings are scheduled for Oct. 2 at 11 a.m.

Under Nebraska law, possession of 140 grams or more of heroin is a Class IB felony, carrying a potential sentence of 20 years to life in prison. The “no drug tax stamp” charge is a Class IV felony, punishable by up to two years in prison.

Prosecutors could also refer the case for federal review, as heroin trafficking across state lines often falls under federal jurisdiction. For now, both defendants remain in custody as the case moves forward in Dawson County Court.

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation has awarded 22 teachers with funds to support agricultural education and FFA programs across the state.

The awards, known as the Dr. Allen G. and Kay L. Blezek Teacher Retention Awards, aim to help keep early-career agricultural education teachers in Nebraska classrooms. Recipients are all within their first five years of teaching and are eligible for increasing awards as their impact grows in the classroom, in FFA chapters, and within their communities.

Blezek Teacher Retention Award is an investment in the future of Nebraska agriculture,” said Megahn Schafer, executive director of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation. “We are very proud to support these teachers as they get established in their classrooms and communities. Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation Honors 22 Agricultural Education Teachers

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors approved the 2025-26 budget Wednesday during a meeting on the North Platte campus while also receiving updates on student life, faculty, and campus initiatives.

The meeting began with public hearings on setting the 2025 property tax requirement and adopting the college’s budget. No members of the public spoke during either hearing. MPCC President Ryan Purdy described the hearings as “pretty uneventful,” noting that most funding now comes from the state-funded Future Fund rather than property taxes.

“Our levy for the second year, our maximum, is $0.02,” Purdy said. “The board elected to stay with the $0.02 capital levy, which has been in place for about the last 10 years. That’s the funding we’re allowed to use for capital construction and facility renovation.”

The college’s total budget for all funds is just under $60 million, with $5.45 million funded through property taxes. MPCC maintains facilities across its 18-county service area, with a combined insurable value of $200 million.

Fall enrollment has increased 9.5%, and dual enrollment is up 24%, which Purdy said benefits students while supporting funding. “Right now in the fall of '25 compared to fall of '24, we’re experiencing about a 9.5% increase in enrollment, which is huge, and will help our funding. Dual enrollment has been fantastic…we’re seeing a 24% increase right now in dual enrollment across the service area,” he said.

Student trustees Vernon Graham of North Platte and Jackson Delevaux of McCook gave updates on intramurals, sports, concerts, and festivals. “It’s fun to hear the things that are going on—the intramurals, the student life, some of the concerts and festivals. Great to have students at the table to get their input,” Purdy said. 

Faculty representative Jesse Lovett highlighted English Department conferences and publications.

Other business included approving August bills totaling $1.4 million, settling a 22-year-old worker’s compensation claim, and carrying forward $18.6 million in unused budget authority. 

The next regular MPCC board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 15 at MCC East Campus in McCook.

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation will host its Change Wars Celebration and Community Cookout Sept. 26 at Bauer Field and the North Platte High School parking lot.

The night begins with a $5 cookout meal, sponsored by Nebraskaland Bank, from 5 to 7 p.m. Meals include a hamburger or hot dog, chips, and water, with baked goods available for purchase from the NPHS FCCLA Club.

At 6:15 p.m., elementary students will gather for the Change Wars March, stepping off at 6:30. The march highlights the generosity behind the $12,000 raised this year, money that will directly benefit classrooms, teachers, and students. The top fundraising classroom was Ms. Brinegar’s 2nd grade class at McDonald Elementary.

“This event brings our schools and community together to celebrate generosity and Bulldog pride,” said Terri Burchell, executive director of the NPPS Foundation.

Jerome Gilg, a representative from Holy Spirit Church, says the festival has grown over the past decade into a highlight for the local community. “We knew that we wanted to do something of service in the community as well as build community within our church, and this is a good way to do it,” he said.

Bike Trail Repairs to Close Trails Along Canal and Tail Race

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The “Hot-N-Ready” wasn’t so ready Wednesday in North Platte.

Little Caesars suddenly closed its doors in the afternoon, posting a sign that read “closed until further notice” — and left customers scratching their heads and tummies rumbling. Local news outlets reported two employees were inside making the decision, but no explanation was offered at the time.

Naturally, locals wondered: Was it the ovens? The sauce? A pizza conspiracy?

The answer turned out to be a lot less dramatic. District Manager Kim Nitz swooped in on social media comments to clear things up:

“We’ll be open as soon as we can,” Nitz said. “We just ran out of product.”

In other words, the pizza place simply ran out of pizza.

Nitz explained the hiccup came while training new employees on ordering supplies. “Sometimes you gotta fail before you can succeed,” she said. “We’re human and we make mistakes — it’s how we learn. We cannot wait to be open again and serving all of you.”

So rest easy, North Platte. The Little Caesars isn’t gone for good — it just needs to restock before it can get back to fulfilling those pizza cravings.

One year has passed since the sudden death of Janeen White Gill, a 50-year-old mother, grandmother, and mental health therapist from North Platte. Her daughters say their grief remains matched by anger — not only over the medical events they say led to her passing but also over the way they feel she was treated in her final days and even after her death.&nbsp;

“This is our family’s story,” wrote Anastasia Miller in a Facebook post calling for accountability. “It’s a story of unimaginable loss, medical negligence, and the total lack of dignity shown to our mother. Not just in her final days, but even after her death.”&nbsp;

On the night of September 22, 2024, Janeen went to the emergency room at Great Plains Health (GPH) in North Platte, suffering from severe abdominal pain. Doctors determined she had a twisted colon, a condition known as volvulus, and she underwent emergency surgery performed by a traveling surgeon.&nbsp;

Anastasia said her mother was transferred to the ICU, where she spent several days in pain. According to her daughters, Janeen repeatedly complained of extreme discomfort, yet no abdominal CT scan was performed in the days following the operation.&nbsp;

By the morning of September 26, doctors discovered that Janeen had suffered a gastrointestinal perforation — a hole in the stomach that can quickly become life-threatening. She was rushed, said Anastasia, into another emergency surgery. Afterward, doctors placed a wound vac and put her on a ventilator to rest.&nbsp;

That evening, the family stated they received a phone call from a nurse. Janeen’s blood pressure was low, and her scheduled procedure to remove the wound vac and close her abdomen was postponed. The nurse told them Janeen was no longer sedated but that “her body was putting itself into a coma so that it could heal.”&nbsp;

Through the night into the morning of September 27, Janeen developed hyperpyrexia — an extreme fever reaching 107°F. Hyperpyrexia is a medical emergency that can cause irreversible brain damage, organ failure, and death if not treated immediately. According to the family, Janeen endured this fever for more than 12 hours without the urgent intervention they believed was necessary.&nbsp;

By the following day, her organs were failing, and she was in septic shock. Her daughters were told that if she regained consciousness, she would likely lose her limbs due to restricted blood flow. On September 28, 2024, at 9:33 p.m., Janeen died surrounded by her four daughters.&nbsp;

Weeks after Janeen’s death, the family discovered a post in the “NO LIMITS – North Platte, Neb.” Facebook group alleging that an ICU nurse, identified by the family as Luci Duggan, removed Janeen’s wound vac after her death, took photos of her organs, and shared them with others. The post suggested the nurse had been fired.&nbsp;

The family contacted the patient advocate at Great Plains Health, who confirmed that Duggan had committed a "serious HIPAA violation" and apologized. The advocate also indicated that the hospital had attempted to remove the post quickly, suggesting, according to the family, that they did not want the public to see it.&nbsp;

“Sharing images of her body — after she passed, after all she endured — was a violation of basic human decency. Unfortunately for them, I saw it,” Anastasia said.&nbsp;

Nebraska’s licensing website shows that Duggan’s nursing license remains active.&nbsp;

For her daughters, remembering Janeen is about far more than the circumstances of her death. Her daughters said she was a woman who had just reached milestones that marked both pride and promise.&nbsp;

“We celebrated her 50th birthday in June 2024, months before her life was taken,” Autumn Miller shared. “Also, in July 2024, she earned her doctorate degree, something she had worked so many years for. She spent 5 years writing her dissertation. She walked the stage to receive her doctorate just two weeks before she died.”&nbsp;

Janeen was a practicing mental health therapist in North Platte and had built her own practice. Her daughters describe her as a mother who never missed a moment in their lives, even when it wasn’t easy.&nbsp;

“She was the most amazing mom,” Autumn said. “She supported us 4 girls in whatever we did. She always showed up for us, no matter how inconvenient it was for her.”&nbsp;

Janeen was also stepping into a new chapter of life she had long dreamed of: becoming a grandmother. Her first grandchild was born in 2022, and her second was on the way when she passed.&nbsp;

“My mom never got to hold her grandson,” Autumn said. “A simple look at her Facebook would show you how proud she was of being a grandma. She’ll never get to meet any of her future grandkids. She’ll never get to practice with her doctorate. Not only was she a mother, she was a grandma, a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a niece, a therapist, and so much more to those who knew her. She endured a lot in her life, but she taught us girls to keep going and not back down. She was a warrior. And I’m proud to call her my mom.”&nbsp;

For the Miller family, speaking out is about more than grief — it is about making sure no other family endures what they say they did. They say they want answers, change, and safeguards for patients at Great Plains Health.&nbsp;

Anastasia Miller described the ongoing pain and determination her family feels:&nbsp;

“We are seeking accountability and justice. Our mom was not given the care she deserved, not by any stretch of the imagination. We are heartbroken by the suffering she endured, and we are sickened by the way she was disrespected after she passed.”&nbsp;

She emphasized that their fight is not just personal, but a "warning" to protect others:&nbsp;

“If this could happen to our mom, it could happen to someone else. And if GPH won’t protect its patients, then we will speak until they do.”&nbsp;

Their mission, she says, is about more than justice:&nbsp;

“Our fight isn’t just for justice. It’s for her memory, her dignity, and for every patient who deserves better.”&nbsp;

Great Plains Health extended its “deepest sympathy to anyone who has lost a loved one,” acknowledging that the loss of a family member or friend is always difficult.

The hospital emphasized that, due to federal HIPAA privacy laws, it cannot discuss specific cases. It noted that patient privacy is a top priority, with new employees receiving comprehensive HIPAA training and ongoing monthly and quarterly reminders. Any privacy violations are reported to the patient, the Office of Inspector General, and, in severe cases, state licensing authorities, with violations potentially resulting in termination.

Like many hospitals nationwide, Great Plains Health occasionally employs traveling physicians to ensure continuous coverage, particularly during extended vacations or maternity leave. The hospital also highlighted its permanent surgical staff, including four general surgeons, three of whom grew up in the region and are committed to the health of the local community.

Great Plains Health also highlighted its national patient safety performance. In the most recent Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade report, the hospital received one of the top scores in Nebraska, with only three hospitals in the state ranking higher. Leapfrog evaluates hospitals on measures such as infection prevention, surgical safety, and staff responsiveness. Additionally, Great Plains Health’s observed-to-expected mortality rate as of August 2025 is 0.58 — meaning the hospital has fewer deaths than expected based on national benchmarks, reflecting performance above the national average.

The statement concluded by noting the challenges inherent in healthcare and acknowledging that perfection is not always possible. “Still, we are proud of the quality of care provided at Great Plains Health and how we compare on a national level. Our community can have confidence in an organization deeply committed to excellence, compassion and the health of the people we serve,” the release read.

One Year Later: The Miller Family Recounts their Experience at Great Plains Health & The Hospital's Response

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Lincoln County will soon roll out a new tool to help combat substance abuse: a real-time Opioid and Stimulant Monitoring System designed to track risk factors, protective factors, and community needs.

Erin Bone, coordinator for Substance Abuse Prevention with Community Connections, said the project is part of a regional effort funded through the Iowa State University Public Science Collaborative. Lincoln County was one of only a handful of counties in Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa selected to participate.

“This is a huge undertaking,” Bone said. “We’re getting a dashboard that helps us track risk and protective factors within our community. We’re really excited to launch it in the very near future.”

The dashboard will pull data from multiple partners, including Great Plains Health, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and Stop Overdose Nebraska. That information will allow prevention teams to identify trends—such as age groups, neighborhoods, or language demographics most affected by substance use—and tailor outreach accordingly.

Bone explained that the system won’t collect personal details but will instead provide broad demographic snapshots. “We’re not looking at specific names or addresses,” she said. “It’s very baseline data, but it will help us target how we talk to people and how we get information out there.”

One early finding is that areas north of the railroad in North Platte are underserved, and Bone hopes the dashboard will guide resources where they’re most needed. Data will also measure the effectiveness of local interventions, allowing organizations to adjust strategies in real time.

Community involvement has been central from the beginning. Listening sessions with nonprofits, law enforcement, schools, and health providers helped shape what the system should track and how it should be used. The goal, Bone said, is threefold: reduce overdoses, support at-risk populations, and strengthen local partnerships.

“We want to reduce harm, whether that’s lowering substance use overall or just getting more Narcan into the right hands,” Bone said. “At-risk populations need extra support, and that improves quality of life for everyone. And this is a great way to bring our community partners together.”

Lincoln County is also working to expand access to resources. While only two local pharmacies currently distribute free Narcan, a vending machine stocked with the overdose-reversing medication is expected to be available soon.

The evening begins with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Guests will enjoy a New York strip steak with baked potato, salad, dessert bar, and two complimentary drinks. Entertainment will be provided by the Flat Rock Irregulars, with a silent auction running from 5 to 7 p.m. and a live auction to follow.

Organizers Janet Cox and Kathy Hahn said the fundraiser plays a vital role in helping local cancer patients. The Gift of Hope provides financial assistance to families across western Nebraska — stretching as far as Lexington to the east, the Wyoming border to the west, and into South Dakota and Kansas. “All of our funding comes from donations and events like this banquet,” Hahn said. “Your donation means hope, relief, and strength for someone facing the fight of their life. No one should battle cancer alone.”

Cox called the banquet “a really, really fun evening” and “a rewarding evening because we feel like we can help a lot of people.” She added that the community has been supportive across generations throughout the fundraiser’s 22-year history.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — After years of running boards, hosting shows, and chasing stories across Nebraska, Allison Peck is now the news director North Platte didn’t know it needed — until now. Listeners quickly noticed her arrival on the airwaves, sending emails and texts praising the “new news lady” — articulate, clear, and engaging.

Peck is Eagle Media’s storyteller behind North Platte Post and Sandhills Post, bringing a mix of experience, energy, and a passion for local stories.

“Allison was the one we were waiting for,” said Operations Manager Derek Beck. “We had a lot of people that applied for this job. We were super picky about it, so this job’s been open since April I think. We really, really wanted to make sure that we didn’t hit a single or a double — we really wanted to hit a home run and we were very patient.”

Peck’s journey in radio began in McCook in 2016. Then a college student, she balanced her time between running the board for live sports broadcasts and serving as an unpaid intern. She managed summer remote events, hosted her own show, and even delivered weather forecasts. Within a year, she was promoted to paid intern while pursuing theater and media communications at Doane University.

When she returned to McCook in 2019, Peck took on a full-time role in sales. She also hosted a midday show, continued weather reports, and occasionally board operated. She worked closely with the operations manager daily, an experience that gave her a front-row seat to the complexities of running a station.

Those years gave her a reputation for versatility. “Which you can see, is why she was a really great candidate for this job, because [she's] kind of a Swiss Army knife that knows how to do a lot of things,” Beck said. “...but I kind of turned [her] loose after three days and said, hey, go do it.”

In fall of 2020, Peck left McCook to move to Lincoln. She worked as a client marketing coordinator in sales for NRG Media from May 2021 through September. That fall, her first daughter, Raegan, was born, and Peck stepped away from broadcasting and sales to focus on motherhood.

The next three years were a whirlwind of moves — a return to McCook, a short stay in Mitchell, then a year in Ogallala. Along the way, Peck and her husband, Joseph — a North Platte native and now EMT — welcomed their second daughter, Ryleigh, this past April.

“Being a stay-at-home mom was the most rewarding and the most overwhelming thing I’ve ever done,” Peck said. “I loved every moment with my girls, but I also felt like I was missing a part of myself.&nbsp; — My husband even says I come home happier. I feel like everyone gets a better version of me.”

For Beck, who worked with Peck years ago in McCook, seeing her return to radio was both exciting and natural. “You kind of have it in your head who that person might be or what they would sound like,” he said. “Literally when I saw [her] application come through, I’m like box checked, box checked, box checked.”

Listeners have echoed his confidence. “I don’t know how many texts and emails I’ve had saying hey, we like the new news lady. She sounds really good. She’s very articulate. The news is really good,” Beck said.

Now based in North Platte, Peck has taken on the dual role of directing news coverage and hosting Good Morning North Platte at 9 a.m. on 98.1 FM. She describes herself first and foremost as a storyteller — a passion rooted in theater from the age of five and carried through her years of writing, reporting, and broadcasting.

“You do, you kind of light up about the news stuff,” Beck told her during their on-air introduction. “You’re easy to listen to. We’re just gonna continue to let you do some of the things that you enjoy doing. But I think that morning show on 98.1 has got your name kind of written all over it.” That show airs from 6 a.m to 10 a.m. with news and interview focus from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Peck said she hopes the community will share stories with her. 

“There’s only one of me and there’s a very big town,” she said. “If there’s news out there that I don’t know about that I should know about, if there’s an event happening that should be a story — yeah, definitely reach out. NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte Northside Association is hosting a “Meet Your Neighbor Block Party."

The event will be Thursday, Sept. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Northside Gathering Grounds near Rodeo Road and Highway 83.

Organizers say the free, family-friendly event will feature games, music, snacks, drinks and prize giveaways. Beyond the fun, the association hopes the evening will help spark ideas for strengthening the city’s north side and encourage residents to share input about the neighborhood’s future.

“Our vision is to revitalize the Northside and unlock its potential for growth, creating more opportunities for small businesses and families,” said Northside Association member Chad Fosdick. “We want to see safe, clean recreation spaces, thriving businesses, and a destination that welcomes both residents and visitors.”

Association leaders say the block party is meant to blend the atmosphere of a town hall with a community celebration. Representatives will be available to take feedback, and suggestion cards will be provided. A “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program is also expected to be introduced, with organizers seeking both volunteers and community members who need assistance.

Nick McNew, Northside Association member, said the group was formed after conversations among community members who wanted a solution-focused organization for the Northside. Since hosting a successful town hall earlier this year, the association has been working to build momentum.

“We are just working together as a community to get people together to take pride in the town that we live in,” McNew said.

The event is hosted in partnership with NebraskaLand Bank and the Northside Gathering Grounds. All residents are encouraged to attend.

OGALLALA, Neb. — Mid-Plains Community College’s Ogallala campus is welcoming students this fall with a variety of classes and special programs, including late-start options and unique educational opportunities, college officials said Wednesday.

Jenny Soper, director of the Ogallala campus, said classes are in full swing, but students who missed the traditional August registration still have options. The college is offering 12-week courses beginning Sept. 15, providing a chance for high school students to earn dual credit—college and high school credit simultaneously—at no tuition cost.

“These classes give students a head start on the credits they’ll need for any degree path,” Soper said. “You only have to pay for books, and many courses are fully online now, so there’s flexibility for everyone.”

Among the classes available are English composition, college algebra, American government, and sociology. Soper emphasized the advantage of completing required courses while still in high school.

In addition to core academic offerings, the campus is hosting a conversational Spanish class. The 12-week course, led by an instructor based in Perkins County, meets weekly on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Perkins County High School. Enrollment remains open at $129, including a textbook, despite a pre-registration deadline.

The campus is also providing educational workshops for the wider community. In October, State Trooper Templet will conduct three free classes covering topics such as anti-bullying strategies and recognizing the symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse. Soper said the sessions are designed for parents and community members who want to stay informed about pressing social issues.

“Whether it’s students looking to get ahead in their coursework or parents seeking educational resources, we encourage everyone to reach out,” Soper said. “Our staff is always available, and information is easy to find on our website or by visiting the campus.”

The Ogallala campus continues to highlight opportunities that combine convenience, accessibility, and practical learning experiences for both students and community members.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher outlined the city’s proposed budget, major community projects and ongoing revitalization efforts during a recap of Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The council began its session with the first public hearing on the city’s annual budget. Kelliher said the $38 million proposal continues efforts to lower the city’s property tax levy, which has dropped by more than a full percentage point over the past five years. A final council vote is expected Sept. 16, following publication and additional public comment.

“This year’s budget drops the levy by about four-tenths of a cent,” Kelliher said, noting the city’s focus on reducing costs through contract negotiations and insurance savings.

One of the biggest savings came in workers’ compensation insurance. The city secured a $400,000 reduction by shifting coverage to a new provider through a local agency, while maintaining property and liability insurance with its longtime carrier.

The council also addressed infrastructure, including approval of a water district to replace lines on Dewey Street in advance of a state highway project planned for 2027. A new sewer district was also approved to support commercial development on the city’s east side.

Kelliher highlighted progress on the new recreation center, expected to open in about nine to 12 months. Features include Nebraska’s first Ninja Cross obstacle course suspended above a pool and a modern climbing wall with multiple configurations. Both are expected to draw heavy community use and even competitions.

“These are amenities that not only give people something fun to do in the winter but also help attract visitors,” Kelliher said.

Other items included renewing the North Platte 80s baseball team’s license agreement for another season, recognizing volunteer service on local boards, and approving the purchase of a new jet truck for the wastewater department.

The council also granted a conditional use permit for a redevelopment project on Rodeo Road, where an old motel is being converted into updated apartments. The mayor said it aligns with broader revitalization in the area, including new housing developments and plans for a park on a former trailer site.

Kelliher noted construction has begun on a skate park at Centennial Park, with completion expected this fall.

“As long as we continue to invest in projects that make North Platte a place people want to come, we’ll grow our economy and reduce the property tax burden,” he said.

LEWELLEN, Neb. — Riders will saddle up at Ash Hollow State Historical Park on Sept. 6 for the Velvet Spurs’ annual horseback poker run, a fundraiser for the Friends of Ash Hollow.

The family-friendly event begins at 10 a.m. Mountain Time, with registration at the park’s main entrance. Riders will travel trails through the historic landmark, stopping at stations to collect poker cards. Prizes will be awarded for the top three hands, along with the worst hand.

“It’s very family-friendly. There’s no time event on it, so you don’t have to speed,” said Velvet Spurs President Jean Tobiasson. “You can take your time, enjoy looking at the wildlife and the history up there, and just bring the whole family.”

The event, now in its third year, will feature some newly mapped trails, including a lookout point offering views of Lake McConaughy. The ride is $10 per participant, with entry available the day of the event.

Following the ride, participants are invited to a potluck dinner. The Velvet Spurs will provide sloppy joes and tableware, and riders are asked to bring a salad or dessert.

If inclement weather forces a postponement, the event will be rescheduled for Sept. 20.

Ash Hollow, located at the west end of Lake McConaughy, holds deep historical significance as a Native American buffalo jump site and features preserved cultural landmarks.

HERSHEY, Neb. (Aug. 19, 2025) — The Hershey Lions Club is gearing up for a full day of small-town tradition and big-time entertainment Saturday as the Hershey Fall Festival returns, capped off by a concert featuring Texas country artist Casey Donahew.

The festival kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with a parade along Main Street, winding down to the park where events continue throughout the day. Highlights include a prime rib lunch, car show, tractor display, local vendors, and the Hershey Volunteer Fire Department’s popular water fight. Other crowd favorites are set to return as well, including Cow Pie Bingo and the Beer Olympics at Kathy’s Place.

“This festival really brings everyone together all day,” said Lions Club member Justin Petska. “There’s something for everyone, from families at the park to folks who just want to come out and enjoy the concert at night.”

The evening festivities open at 5 p.m. with a beer garden and food vendors, followed by live music. Drew Phillips will open the show before Donahew takes the stage downtown against the backdrop of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks — a setting organizers say makes the event unique.

Advance tickets are $20 and available at Hershey State Bank locations in North Platte and Hershey, as well as online at outhousetickets.com. Tickets will also be available at the gate for $25. Drinks will be sold on a ticket system, with beer and seltzers available for $5 each.

Petska said the festival has become the Lions Club’s biggest fundraiser, helping to support community projects throughout the year. He credited sponsors and local support for making the event possible.

“When you see a thousand people packed into Main Street in Hershey, it’s pretty special,” Petska said. “We couldn’t put on a weekend like this without the help of our sponsors and the community.

KANSAS CITY — U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced Thursday plans to boost American farmers by purchasing millions of bushels of crops.

In an effort to increase American exports, the USDA will purchase 417,000 metric tons of commodities immediately to support the international food aid programs. That’s equivalent to more than 16 million bushels of corn and sorghum.

Rollins made the announcement during a speech that earned a standing ovation at the Ag Outlook Forum in Kansas City, where she outlined the Trump Administration’s efforts to aid a struggling farm economy.

“The cost of doing business for our farmers has increased drastically while commodity prices have slipped,” Rollins said.
