North Platte, Neb. - When most folks here 4-H, they instantly think it's animal showing, which there is plenty of that. There are different areas of activities for 4-H'rs to get involved in and one of those areas is the music contest where the kids can participate in by using just vocals, playing an instrument, or even both.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jayden Tillman is a senior at Brady High School and has been involved in the music contest since he was in 8th or 9th grade. Around that same time is when he started to develop an interest in music. When participating he likes to use his vocal cords and play his guitar.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The music contest. It's a really an overly glorified talent show. It is a phenomenal thing," said Tillman. &nbsp;"You can take it. You can have time to showcase your talents, whether it be poetry or singing or just playing an instrument and stuff, you know, gives you a way to express yourself and kind of show your skills to people that you may not otherwise be able to show them to and stuff. It is a really, like I said, really good deal and stuff to do.&nbsp;

While not participating in the music contest, Tillman likes to enter bake goodies during the fair season and more He is also the recipient of the 4 H council scholarship and plans to go a tech school in Kansas following his graduation from Brady.&nbsp;

Grandels Roofing and Construction in North Platte will be giving away toys this Sunday from 1:00pm - 3:00pm to the first 500 kids (kids must be present). Santa Claus will also be making an appearance at the event. This event is a way for Grandels to give back to their community. Kearney, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Kearney sports communication majors received news that the group has been nominated in three categories for this year's IBS awards in New York City. &nbsp;

Amongst the students is North Platte native Kade Mohr who has been nominated for the second year and this year is a finalist with seniors Jon Willis and Ethan McCormick for "Best Sports Talk Show". All sporting events and talk show aired on 91.1 KLPR the student run radio station during the 2024 year. This marks another year where UNK students have been nominated for the IBS awards in New York City.&nbsp;

At approximately 3:55 AM this morning, the Sidney Police Department was involved in a vehicle pursuit. An officer traveling southbound on 11th Avenue observed a van strike a street sign near Creast View Apartments, nearly colliding with the officer's vehicle. The van then accelerated northbound on 11th Avenue at a high rate of speed, estimated to exceed 90 miles per hour.

The officer activated emergency lights and initiated a pursuit. The pursuit concluded when the suspect vehicle collided with the Rolling Pin Bakery and Sonny's Super Foods. The officer immediately rendered medical aid to the driver and requested assistance from Emergency Medical Services and the Fire Department.

The Sidney Police Department adheres to strict pursuit policies, emphasizing a thorough risk-to-benefit assessment before engaging in a pursuit. In this instance, the driver demonstrated a disregard for public safety prior to police involvement, having already collided with a street sign.

During the pursuit, the officer requested supervisor notification, and provided updates on traffic conditions and safety concerns. The entire incident, from initial contact to the vehicle collision, lasted less than 60 seconds.

The Nebraska State Patrol has been requested to conduct an accident reconstruction using drones. The incident remains under investigation. Officers will be canvassing the area to gather any available video footage.

We are also compiling a list of any other objects that may have been struck by the suspect vehicle prior to police contact. If you have observed any damage to your property that may be related to this incident, please contact the Sidney Police Department so that we can document and address any claims.

January 23, 2025 (North Platte, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people in southwest Nebraska as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation.

Wednesday, investigators served a search warrant at a residence in rural Lamar, in Chase County. The NSP SWAT Team was activated as part of this operation. Both occupants had active warrants for their arrest.

As the SWAT Team made verbal contact with the occupants of the home, both voluntarily exited the residence and were taken into custody. The search of the residence revealed 16 grams of methamphetamine, eight ounces of marijuana, 12 firearms, and two stolen motorcycles.

The male occupant, Kenneth Johnston, 45, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for distribution of a controlled substance, and for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of stolen property, possession of a stolen vehicle, and conspiracy to commit theft. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail. 

The female occupant, Lindsey Bartorelli, 39, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for theft and lodged in Chase County Jail.

NSP investigators were assisted by troopers from several divisions of NSP, as well as the CODE Task Force, Imperial Police Department, and Chase County Sheriff’s Office.

Two Arrested in Chase County Narcotics Investigation



Lincoln, Neb. — Nebraska LEAD Program Class 42 recently returned from an impactful International Study/Travel Seminar to Romania, Hungary and Poland, held from January 3-17, 2025. The two-week journey provided 28 fellows with an immersive opportunity to explore the historical, cultural, religious and agricultural dimensions of these Eastern European nations.

“The International Study/Travel Seminar is a cornerstone of the Nebraska LEAD Program, offering Fellows an invaluable global perspective that enhances their leadership skills and understanding of agriculture in a global context,” said Kurtis Harms, Nebraska LEAD Program director. “This year’s visit to Romania, Hungary and Poland provided meaningful experiences and connections that will undoubtedly shape our Fellows as future leaders.”

The seminar featured a diverse itinerary, including visits to farms, businesses and historical sites. Highlights of the trip included:

“Visiting these countries opened my eyes to the shared challenges and opportunities we face in agriculture,” said LEAD 42 Fellow Jake Werner, a senior merchandiser with ADM. “Seeing how farms in Romania and Poland operate and hearing their stories inspired me to think differently about how we approach our agricultural systems back home. The visit also helped me appreciate the local and international markets we have in the United States.”

Fellow Michelle Bose, a farmer and closing agent with Dvoracek Title, added, “Walking through Auschwitz-Birkenau and Schindler’s Factory was an emotional experience that deepened my appreciation for the resilience of humanity and the importance of leadership grounded in empathy and understanding.”

The Nebraska LEAD Program continues to prepare agricultural leaders for tomorrow through its comprehensive leadership development curriculum. The International Study/Travel Seminar serves as a capstone experience, equipping participants with global perspectives that enrich Nebraska’s agricultural and rural communities.

“One of the most important factors in becoming a good leader is being able to get outside of your bubble or your comfort zone and experience life through the eyes others,” said Director Harms. “This enhanced understanding of people and cultures around the world hopefully lead to better decision-making and greater relationships with others.”

Kearney, Neb. – Senior wing Samantha Moore grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds and was one of nine players to score as Nebraska Kearney held off Central Oklahoma, 55-48, Thursday night in Edmond.

The Lopers (14-3, 7-1) win a fifth straight game, hand the Bronchos (4-14, 3-6) a fifth straight loss and take a fifth straight game in the series. This is the only meeting between the two this year.

UNK led from start to finish but had to hang as UCO senior reserve Karly Wadsworth sunk four threes and the Lopers missed five free throws in the fourth quarter. That allowed the ‘Chos to cut a 42-25 deficit to five with 28 seconds left. They could’ve gotten even closer but 6-2 senior Jordyn Turner missed a three and then Moore (Mullen) went 2 for 2 at the line with 20 seconds left. Turner is now 11 of 15 (73%) from the triple line this winter.

“I didn’t think we guarded right in the fourth quarter. Obviously, Wadsworth got hot and did what she’s capable of doing,” said UNK head coach Drew Johnson on the KRVN Radio post-game show. “But our attention to deal in the fourth quarter wasn’t good enough. We didn’t close it the way we needed to.”

UNK held UCO to just 25 points and nine field goals over the first three quarters. However, a 15-point lead entering the fourth could’ve been bigger as the Lopers had 20 turnovers for a second straight game and went 6 of 24 (25%) from behind the arc.

“Twenty turnovers are too many. Nine assists and 20 turnovers … we tried to play finesse around their athleticism instead of ball fake and deliver,” said Johnson. “Disappointed in that because we had a chance to bury them, and we didn’t. But credit to UCO for their run at the end.”

Wadsworth came in shooting only 23% (15 of 67) from downtown but the veteran shooter finally got hot when it mattered most. Freshman reserve Alex Flattery (Sioux City) countered the explosion by hitting two threes of her own to make the score 47-33 and then 50-35.

“She (Alex) was not afraid of the moment and not fazed when the physicality ramped up in the fourth quarter,” said Johnson. “Her minutes were big tonight”

UNK was plus 13 on the glass with Moore leading the way. She had four offensive and 12 defensive caroms with her overall total three shy of tying Shiloh McCool’s record. Next, sophomore reserve post Bailee Sobczak (Rapid City, S.D.) added six more boards with junior point guard Jillian Aschoff (Lincoln Pius) at five.

“Sam’s boards were huge and she’s really rebounding it well this year (7.6 per game). Not sure that was on my bingo card at the start of the year,” said Johnson.

Aschoff had a team-high 10 points, her third straight game in double figures. She was 5 of 9 from the field and joined junior reserve Saniya Simmons (Olathe, Kan.) as Lopers with three assists. Finally, Flattery was 3 of 3 from the field to have nine points with Moore at seven.

For the ‘Chos, Wadsworth (14) and senior guard LayKysia Johnson (17) combined for 31 points. Before fouling out late, Johnson made six shots and five freebies with Wadsworth 4 of 7 from deep.

UNK is at Rogers State on Saturday afternoon. The Hillcats (7-11, 1-8) fell tonight to No. 11 Fort Hays State, 60-50.

Lopers Lead From Start to Finish & Hold off the Bronchos

Kearney, Neb. – Senior guard Israel Hart tied his career-high of 30 points, scoring 24 in the first half, to help Central Oklahoma defeat Nebraska Kearney, <a href="https://lopers.com/sports/mens-basketball/stats/2024-25/central-oklahoma/boxscore/8029">82-67</a>, Thursday night in Edmond.

The Bronchos (10-8, 4-5) improve to 8-3 at home and have won all 10 games by at least 15 points. By contrast, all eight of their losses are by 10 points or less. UNK (6-10, 4-4) falls to 5-23 all-time vs. UCO including a 0-13 mark in 50-year-old Hamilton Fieldhouse. This is the only meeting between the two this year.

Hart, who began his career at Seminole State (Okla.) College, redshirted last season for the 'Chos but entered tonight at a team-best 15.7 points per game. He promptly made 9 of his first 10 shots to have 24 points in just 14 first half minutes. It was a bit of a shootout as UCO shot 60% (19 of 32) in the first half with UNK at 52% (16 of 31). That gave the Lopers a puncher's chance as they were down just 47-39 at the break.

"Hart came out and hit tough shot after tough shot. They weren't wide open shots; they were bumped, they were contested," said UNK head coach Marty Levinson on the KRVN Radio post-game show. "They were ready to play and are a good team. You might know what they are going to do but they still get to it."

A three from redshirt junior guard Ja'Bryant Hill (Duncanville, Texas) made it a 49-44 two minutes into the second half. UNK then got a defensive stop, but a turnover followed and ended the momentum. UCO responded with a 20-10 run over the next nine minutes to put things away.

"They out rebounded us, and they pretty much got to the loose balls. And when you get to the loose balls, you usually do make shots," said Levinson. "You got to take it from them when you're on the road, but they came out and punched us in the nose first."

The Lopers cooled off from the field in the second half (27%) as did UCO (39%). However, the 'Chos won the battle on the glass by nine, took advantage of 18 UNK turnovers and got eight others into the scoring column besides Hart.

To record his seventh game of at least 20 points this winter, Hart was 10 of 15 (4 of 7 threes) from the field and 6 of 6 at the line. He added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in 28 minutes. Hart also had 30 points in a March 2023 win over Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa. Next, Division I transfers Jordan Thompson (13) and Jacobi Seabock (12) combined for 25 points, 12 rebounds and four assists with 6-10 veteran post Luke Haasl at five rebounds, four points, and three blocks.

"In the second half, we wanted to hard hedge (on Hart). Get after him and take him out. They are a good slipping and good rolling team and have athletic bigs. So, it's hard to over hedge," said Levinson. "It bit us because he came off the corner and made good decisions. At the end of the game, we had to chase possessions and stay aggressive."

Four Loper starters reached double digits including Hill (16) and sophomore post Taylor Harrell (12). Hill added three steals with Harrell going 5 of 8 from the field. Off the bench, forward Clayton Moore (Mullen) and DJ Jamerson (Cibolo, Texas) had six points apiece.

UNK heads to Claremore, Okla., on Saturday to face Rogers State. The Hillcats (14-7, 5-4) fell tonight to Fort Hays State, 74-63.&nbsp;

The Fury took down the Supernovas in their first-ever home match in Columbus with a four-set victory on Feb. 21, 2024. The Supernovas went on to win the remaining three matches, including two four-setters on April 4 and May 4, which was followed by an Omaha sweep on May 9.&nbsp;

Hording the Net:&nbsp;Omaha middle Kaitlyn Hord has been one of the premier blockers in the league through the first two weeks of the 2025 season. The former Husker and Nittany Lion leads the PVF in total blocks with 16 while sitting second in blocks per set at 0.94. Hord's seven blocks in the five-set win over the Vibe on opening night set a Supernovas single-match record. Also, she is only one of two players in the PVF to record seven or more blocks in a match this season. The Kentucky native also sits ninth in hitting percentage with a .333 clip through 54 attacks with 21 kills and only three errors.&nbsp;

• After averaging over 12 kills and digs per match last season, Supernovas outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller has raised her game in 2025.

• Nuneviller currently leads the league in points with 83 through 17 sets. That's made up of 77 kills and six blocks. Plus, she's second in the PVF in points per set with 4.88.&nbsp;

• The Chandler, Arizona native is one of only two players in the league to record a match with 20+ kills and 15+ digs. That was on opening night against Atlanta when she poured in 22 kills and 17 digs while hitting .340.&nbsp;

• The Oregon product has been averaging 19.25 kills and 16.0 digs per match through four contests. Her kill total (77) is first in the PVF while her kills per set (4.53) number is second in the league.&nbsp;

• Nuneviller is fifth in total digs with 64, which is more than five of the eight starting liberos in the PVF. Additionally, her 3.76 digs per set mark is eighth.&nbsp;

The Cooper Curve:&nbsp;Reigning 2024 PVF Rookie of the Year Reagan Cooper has had a solid start to the 2025 season highlighted by her serving game. Cooper has become the best server for the Supernovas recording a team-high five aces and 0.38 per set, which is both third in the league. The second-year pro is on pace to smash her rookie year serving totals when she only had eight aces in 82 sets last year in Columbus. Cooper became the first Supernovas player to put down an ace in three or more consecutive matches since Bethania De&nbsp;La Cruz did so last season. De La Cruz accomplished that feat in seven-straight contests en route to being named the 2024 PVF Server of the Year. The Rowlett, Texas native posted an ace in both the season-opening win over Atlanta and the sweep of Grand Rapids. She followed with two aces against the Thrill last Friday before another ace in the four-set defeat to San Diego on Sunday. Cooper hasn't matched her offensive numbers from last year, but she's still been a big threat with 46 kills and 3.54 kills per set with both stats second on the team.&nbsp;

You have got to get on the ground, you have an opportunity, you can’t just lean over and just try to pick it up with one hand, these guys are too strong, too athletic that we are playing against every night. You have to find a way to get dirty, get grimy and finish off those possessions. We do that and it's a different outcome tonight. We switched up some coverages to force some misses, but we just could not secure the rebound. The biggest thing now. We have to find a way to steal a couple on the road. We have some really good opportunities ahead of us and some very difficult tasks, but we have to stay together. When you're on a streak like we are right now, the human nature is to start questioning and to separate a little bit, but we have to find a way to stay together through this tough time and hopefully get this thing reversed soon. We are going into one of the most difficult places to play in the league on Sunday, a team that is really clicking right now. This USC team is a really talented team. We knew this was going to be a tough game, Muss (Eric Musselman) does a great job, they found a formula we tried to counter with a matchup on the other end and went back-and-forth. They made the plays at the end when they had to.”

On the frustration of losing“They’re all frustrating, anytime you lose, it’s frustrating as hell. You just keep trying to take steps. We took steps in a lot of things tonight, but again it all comes down to loose balls and toughness.”

Brice WilliamsOn tonight’s mistakes“It showed tonight, it showed in my leadership, it showed up in a lot of ways, and when it comes down to winning time you can’t really have certain mistakes. The mistakes we had they have just been compounding from game to game, and that’s why we’re on a streak. It’s going to take for us to stand up and take control, control the narrative, and be tougher.”

On the defensive struggles“They found something that was working for them. We knew what they were going to do, they out-toughed us. We got the stop on the first shot, and then they got the second shot or third shot, or we compounded it with fouls. It was on us tonight – our toughness for 40 minutes.”
