On July 1, $2.24 million in federal grants through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) were awarded to four Nebraska airports for taxiway rehabilitation and other improvements, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT). 

The fourth round of FY 2021 AIP grants will provide funding for David City Municipal Airport, Grant Municipal Airport, Thomas County Airport in Thedford, and the Lincoln Airport.

The funding received included $1,454,605 to rehabilitate the taxiway and taxi lanes at the Lincoln Airport.

This is in addition to the $2.4 million that was received in April. The David City Airport will receive $303,000 to update the airport master plan or study. 

The Grant Municipal Airport will receive $197,777 to install weather reporting equipment, and the Thomas County Airport will receive $288,888 to conduct or update a miscellaneous study.

Nebraska’s grants were part of $844.7 million in supplemental funding for infrastructure grants to 388 airports in 49 states plus the District of Columbia. AIP projects promote safety, efficiency, environmental stewardship, infrastructure, and security at the nation’s airports.

“We don’t want to just build our airports back to the way things were before the pandemic. We want our airports to be better than ever–accessible to all, delivering maximum benefit to their communities, and helping, directly and indirectly, create jobs for millions of Americans,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Four people ended up in the hospital after what authorities are calling a fireworks “mishap” in a Rapid City suburb. 

The Rapid City Tribune reports firefighters were called late Thursday evening to a grass fire in Rapid Valley. 

According to a report from the Pennington County Fire Service and the Rapid Valley Fire Department, the fire stemmed from a “mishap” during a private fireworks display. 

Bystanders were able to bring the fire under control but not before the four people suffered minor injuries. 

They were taken to Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.

Alliance resident reported missing from Lincoln Corrections Center

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A man has been arrested on allegations that he sexually assaulted two women in North Platte.

Police said on July 11, at 5:33 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 800 Block of South Dewey.&nbsp; 

Upon arrival, police said officers made contact with the victim and witnesses.&nbsp;

 It was reported to officers that Jose Moreno began causing a disturbance on the property and that the victim had walked away from Moreno.&nbsp; As the victim walked away, Moreno followed and allegedly reached out and grabbed the victim on the buttocks.&nbsp; 

During the investigation, police said officers were contacted by a second victim.&nbsp; The second victim said that she was also approached&nbsp;by Moreno earlier and as she walked away, Moreno grabbed her on the buttocks.&nbsp; 

Police said Moreno was located nearby and placed under arrest.&nbsp; 

Moreno was incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center on suspicion of two counts of 3rd-degree sexual assault.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Man accused of sexually assaulting 2 women in North Platte

On July 9 Chadron Police Officers were called to the intersection of East First Street and Bordeaux Street for a fight between a man and a woman walking on the railroad tracks. 

The man and woman were both covered in blood. 

The man had wounds to the head including a large gash and bite marks.

 The woman had scrapes on her elbows and legs. 

"The male and female were interviewed and it was learned that the two of them had been involved in a physical altercation with one another," Chadron Police Chief Richard Hickstein said. "A search of each person was conducted and while searching the female, a small baggie containing a white substance was located. This substance was later field tested and tested positive for cocaine. The Chadron Fire Department was called to the scene and Chadron Rescue Units transported both subjects to the Chadron Community Hospital."

At the Chadron Community Hospital the man and woman received treatment for their wounds. 

"The investigation continued and it was divulged that during the physical altercation, a railroad spike was used as a weapon and was likely to have caused some of the injuries to the male," Hickstein said.&nbsp;

Chadron police arrested 29 year-old Samantha Rouillard for Possession of Cocaine (Class IV Felony0 and Second Degree Domestic Assault (Class IIIA Felony). 

Rouillard was transported to the Dawes County Jail.

The Chadron Police Department was assisted by the Chadron Fire Department and the Crawford Fire Department.

The free presentation will be led by author Rose Mapel who wrote “The Complete Barn Quilt Creation and Painting Guide.”

Mapel will discuss the process and art that surrounds making barn quilts and will have signed copies of her book available for purchase.

Mapel will also lead a Barn Quilt Workshop at the campus from 1-4 p.m. July 31. Attendees will paint 2-foot and 3-foot barn quilts. No previous painting experience is necessary, but Yellow FrogTape®, a hair dryer and an extension cord are required.

The fee for the painting workshop is $65.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The Nebraska Public Power District and utilities across the state are continuing their work to restore power after severe storms wreaked havoc from the Panhandle to Omaha.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-As the North Platte Community Playhouse gears up for their first full season of shows since COVID, things will get kicked off with a band concert.

The North Platte Municipal Band will host a concert at the venue on July 25, at 2:00 p.m.

Organizers say the band will present a concert similar to their Concerts in the Park but will be held on the stage of the Fox Theatre.

The concert will feature medleys from several Broadway musicals, including Fiddler on the Roof and The Sound of Music, as well as traditional marches and modern band selections.

The concert is expected to last around 45 minutes.

Admission is a free-will offering to support the theatre.

ARNOLD, Neb.-Torrential rain, lightning, and wind forced Confederate Railroad to delay their show at Grazer's Bar and Grill in Arnold last night, but that didn't keep more than 300 people from sticking around to hear the country legends.

The concert, which Grazer's hosted in conjunction with the Devil's Den Motorcycle Rally, was forced to move to a side stage after the band's main equipment was soaked by rain.

The Devil's Den Motorcycle Rally and Poker Run is held in honor of Mike Nelson. Events continue through the weekend. Follow their Facebook page <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DevilsDenMotorcycleRally/">HERE</a>.

Box Butte County gets hit with tennis ball size hail, power outages

Governor Pete Ricketts announced that 15 Nebraska State Patrol troopers would continue their voluntary deployment to Texas for an additional 14 days.&nbsp; The deployment is in response to a request for support in managing the ongoing crisis in communities along the border of the United States and Mexico.

“We appreciate the continued service of the Nebraska State Troopers who have volunteered to aid in the response to the ongoing border crisis,” said Governor Ricketts.&nbsp; “The disastrous policies of the Biden-Harris Administration created an immigration crisis on the border.&nbsp; While the federal government has fallen short in its response, Nebraska is happy to step up to provide assistance to Texas as they work to protect their communities and keep people safe.”

Nebraska’s deployment is in response to a request for assistance from emergency management officials in the State of Texas.&nbsp; The request was made through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which is a partnership of state emergency management agencies.

The EMAC request follows the disaster declaration issued by Texas Governor Greg Abbott on June 1st&nbsp;in response to the emergency situation in many communities along the border.

A team of approximately 25 Nebraska State Patrol troopers traveled to Del Rio, Texas in June where they are partnering with the Texas Department of Public Safety to provide law enforcement assistance.

15 Nebraska troopers to remain at Texas border

LEXINGTON, Neb.-More details have been released on the investigation of a fatal shooting in Lexington.

Police Chief Tracy Wolf said at around 2:00 a.m. on July 6, officers, troopers, and deputies from the Dawson County Sheriff's Office responded to an anonymous report of shots fired in the 800 block of West 9th St.

Law enforcement authorities did not locate anything suspicious at this time.

Then, at around 3:10 a.m. medical personnel responded to the same area on the report of an unresponsive male laying on the ground.

Wolf said Marcus Keyser, 23, of Lexington, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wolf said the case is being investigated as a possible drive-by shooting.

Authorities are asking the public to check surveillance cameras for any suspicious activity, particularly between the hours of 1:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on July 5.

The case is being investigated by the Lexington Police Department with assistance from South Central Area Law Enforcement Services.

Keyser was out on bail at the time of his death. He was facing several sexual assault charges in Kearney.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 308-324-2317.

Lexington police tell station KRVN that investigators believe 23-year-old Marcus Keyser was gunned down early Monday morning on a Lexington street. 

Police Chief Tracy Wolf is asking residents to check any surveillance video they have between the times of 1:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. Monday for any activity that might be related to the shooting. 

Keyser was found on the ground with gunshot wounds shortly after 3 a.m. Monday.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The FBI says Nebraska and Iowa have seen a rise in hate crimes in recent years, most of which have been committed on the basis of race and ethnicity.

Eugene Kowel is the special agent in charge at the FBI's Omaha field office. 

At a news conference Thursday, he said the FBI region that includes Nebraska and Iowa has seen a 21% increase in the reporting of hate crimes in recent years. 

Federal officials define a hate crime as a criminal offense, such as assault or arson, with an added element of bias against the intended target's race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender or gender identity.

OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) — A South Dakota man has died and his wife was hurt in a crash on Interstate 80 in western Nebraska. 

The Omaha World-Herald reports the crash happened late Wednesday afternoon just east of Ogallala when a car driven by Judy Kennedy, 72, crashed into the back of a U-Haul trailer stopped on the interstate for a vehicle fire ahead of it. 

The Nebraska State Patrol says Kennedy's husband and passenger in the car, William Kennedy, 73, of Watertown, South Dakota, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Judy Kennedy was treated and released from an Ogallala hospital.

The patrol says the occupants of the Jeep pulling the trailer that was hit were not injured.

OGALLALA, Neb.-Dry, hot weather is the perfect recipe for grass fires, especially when you throw lightning into the mix.

Lightning from passing thunderstorms sparked a grass fire north of Ogallala just after midnight on Friday.

The fire, which was north of Ogallala, near the north side of Lake McConaughy, burned about 50 acres of standing wheat before being brought under control. Officials say the exact amount of burned property will be determined today.

Fire departments from Ogallala, Brule, Paxton, Grant, Big Springs, and Madrid responded to the fire.

No injuries to fire personnel were reported.

The fire was considered controlled at about 4:30 a.m.
