Lincoln - In October of 2019, History Nebraska began renovations to expand and enhance the visitor experience at the Chimney Rock Museum. The expansion project included new interactive exhibits, expanded education rooms, storm shelter, and conference space. After a soft reopening in 2020, the Chimney Rock Museum is fully open this season to visitors. Humanity is one of more than 220 Habitat organizations awarded a grant from Wells Fargo as part of its nationwide initiative to help
low-to-moderate income families construct and improve homes across
the country. 


North
Platte Area Habitat for Humanity will receive $15,000 and use the
funding to build a home in NPAHFH’s Buffalo School neighborhood.
Tracee Allen and Zach Ruiz Wilcox have been waiting through last
year’s pandemic to get started on their house. Their patience is
being rewarded as their friends and family have finally been able to
come out to aid in the build process.

“We
are so grateful for this opportunity to again work with the Wells
Fargo Builds program,” said Dalene Skates, Habitat’s local
affiliate director. “We’ve had a long-standing partnership with
our local Wells Fargo staff. They are some of the best painters we’ve
had on site.”

The
grant is part of a $7.75 million donation Wells Fargo is making to
Habitat for Humanity International through Wells Fargo Builds, an
initiative that provides philanthropic financial support and
volunteerism to create sustainable affordable housing. More than 340
homes will be constructed or repaired with Habitat in over 40 states
through the initiative this year. Wells
Fargo Builds is part of Wells Fargo’s $1 billion philanthropic
commitment to create more housing affordability solutions by 2025.

Platte Area Habitat for Humanity has been building safe, decent
affordable houses in North Platte for the past twenty-three years. To
date, fifty-nine houses have been completed with primarily volunteer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota National Guard will send 125 soldiers to the United States border with Mexico as part of a federal government mission. 

The deployment is expected to last up to a year.

Noem deploys more Guard troops to border on federal mission

LINCOLN&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) has launched a new incentive program, designed to increase the number of bilingual troopers and investigators serving Nebraska. The program provides a 2.5% salary increase to troopers who speak another language. The program applies both to current troopers and new hires.

“We are proud to have a number of bilingual troopers already working across Nebraska and we’d love to increase that number,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As a law enforcement agency, we strive to serve all Nebraskans and visitors to our state, regardless of the language they speak. Recruiting more bilingual troopers is part of that mission.”

The bilingual incentive is part of the new labor agreement between the Nebraska State Patrol and the State Law Enforcement Bargaining Council. The new contract took effect this month. Troopers will be able to test for fluency on dozens of commonly spoken languages, including American Sign Language, to be eligible for the bilingual incentive.

NSP is currently accepting applications for the next recruiting camp, Camp 66, which is scheduled to begin in January. The 2.5% salary increase would increase their starting pay as a State Trooper to approximately $50,600 per year.

HERSHEY, Neb.-The Hershey Public Schools Board of Education has called a bond election to address "urgent facility needs."

The bond issue will be voted on by Hershey residents on August 10. Online registrations must be completed by July 23 <a href="https://www.nebraska.gov/apps-sos-voter-registration/">HERE</a>. The last day to register in person will be July 30.

The proposed bond issue is $17,900,000 and will be voted all by all registered voters in the Hershey School District.

Dated and undersized facilities are cited as some of the main reasons for the improvements.

Voters will be receiving a bond issue brochure in the mail.

Ballots will be due to the County Election Commissioner by 5 p.m. on August 10.

A public information meeting will be held July 19 and July 20 in the Hershey School gym.

New scholarships are available to Mid-Plains Community College students pursuing degrees in program areas leading to high-wage, high-skill and high-demand careers.

The Nebraska Career Scholarships are available thanks to a partnership between MPCC and the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

Qualifying students are eligible to receive up to $3,000 per year, which can be used for tuition, fees, books, program materials or housing.

Recipients must be either first-time students or transfer students who are enrolled in an eligible program, live in Nebraska while receiving the scholarship and participate in a Nebraska-based career-related work experience prior to completing their field of study.

Qualification is not based on financial need. Students must be pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in one of the following program areas to be considered.

Police said they are seeking information on a white Chevrolet Malibu.

Police said the occupants of that vehicle threw a large firework at a family in Holdrege on July 2, causing unknown injuries to the children who were present.

Severe weather risk for southwest Nebraska, Panhandle Friday

MAXWELL, Neb.-Authorities said an Oregon man was uninjured after he drove his vehicle into a canal in Lincoln County on Tuesday.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the report of a vehicle in the Central Nebraska Public Power District canal in the 14000 block of South Cottonwood Canyon Rd., just south of Maxwell.

Officials said it appears the minivan, driven by Tucker Mortensen, 43, of Tualatin, Oregon, was northbound when it left the roadway and entered the canal.

Mortensen told deputies he failed to negotiate a curve and slid into the canal, but was able to exit the vehicle. Deputies said evidence at the scene corroborated his account.

Upon further investigation, deputies became suspicious that Mortensen was under the influence of liquor.

Officials said Mortensen was administered several field sobriety tests, which determined he was impaired. Furthermore, a breath test indicated he was over the legal limit to drive in Nebraska.

As a result, Mortensen was issued a citation for driving under the influence. Officials said he was not incarcerated due to possible injuries sustained in the accident.

The Lincoln County Dive Team removed the vehicle from the canal.

Furthermore, a breath test indicated he was over the legal limit to drive in Nebraska.<figure>

ALMA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have identified a man who drowned in a southern Nebraska lake on the July Fourth holiday. 

The Harlan County Sheriff's Office said Lazaro Hernandez, 23, of Grand Island, died Sunday in Harlan County Lake. 

Sheriff's officials said a 911 call late Sunday afternoon reported the drowning, and deputies were joined by officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Game and Parks in searching for Hernandez. 

His body was found about three hours later on the south side of the lake, located near Alma. 

Investigators believe Hernandez had been swimming when he became fatigued and drowned.

Chadron 'Fur Trade Days' schedule of events 

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Two women were arrested and a vehicle stolen from California was recovered in North Platte on Monday.

Police said&nbsp;that at 12:38 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 3100 Block of South Jeffers.  It was reported that a stolen vehicle was currently at this location. 

Police said officers arrived and located the vehicle which was occupied by two female subjects, Christie Kirk, 46, and Breanne Cruz, 38. 

 Officers confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of California and established probable cause to arrest both subjects on suspicion of theft by receiving stolen property.

 Both Cruz and Kirk were transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center. 

Police said a search of Cruz's property yielded prescription drugs with no prescription.  Cruz was, as a result, incarcerated on suspicion of theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.&nbsp; 

Kirk was incarcerated on suspicion of theft by receiving stolen property.

Stolen vehicle from Cali. recovered in North Platte, 2 arrested

A Wyoming man was arrested for possession of&nbsp;methamphetamine and marijuana in Chadron.&nbsp;

On Tuesday July 6 at approximately 10:13 p.m. Chadron police officer Seth Orsborn conducted a traffic stop with a white Honda Accord for a violation of a stop sign along Highway 20.&nbsp;

Officer Orsborn detected the odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle. 

"A search of the motor vehicle was conducted," Chadron Police Chief Richard Hickstein said. "As a result several grams of suspected marijuana and suspected methamphetamine were discovered concealed within the vehicle. 36 year-old Garret R. Smith of Cheyenne, Wyoming was also found to be driving on a suspended Wyoming driver’s license."

Smith was arrested for possession of methamphetamine (Class IV Felony), possession of marijuana less than one ounce (Infraction), possession of drug paraphernalia (Infraction) and driving under suspension (Class II Misdemeanor).&nbsp;

Smith was transported to the Dawes County Jail. Bond was set at 10% of $10,000.

Taking college classes while still in high school is more affordable than ever.

With the passing of LB 1008 by the Nebraska State Legislature, Nebraska community colleges are eligible to receive funds to support dual credit enrollment.

Dual credit classes are typically taught in high schools by qualified instructors. They provide a head start on a college education by counting toward both high school and college credits simultaneously.

Mid-Plains Community College has elected to use its allocation of the state funds to provide a $20 per credit hour discount to all students who enroll in a dual credit course for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022.&nbsp;

That’s up from the $10 per credit hour discount offered last year. The new amount will make the cost of tuition and fees $94 per credit hour.

“MPCC is providing this discount to students to allow greater access to college credit while in high school,” said Paul Knopick, area director of Early Entry and Program Development. “This discount will provide more opportunities for our area students to gain knowledge of a future degree or career path, help prepare them for college rigor, cut overall costs of college and help contribute to a college-going culture. I would encourage all area high school students to reach out to their counselors or MPCC to take the next steps on their collegiate journey.”

TECUMSEH, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska prison officials say a staff member at the state prison in Tecumseh was taken to a hospital for treatment after being attacked by an inmate. 

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says the attack happened Tuesday as the corrections officer was checking to make sure a door was locked. 

Investigators say the inmate punched the officer repeatedly and kneed the officer in the torso.

Other staff members were able to restrain the inmate, and the injured officer was taken to a local hospital for injuries to his head and torso.

 Prisons officials say the attack came just days after an incident in which three Tecumseh inmates set fire to their cells.

BROKEN BOW, Neb.-The Custer County Sheriff's Office is investigating a two-vehicle crash the left one woman dead and another with serious injuries.

The sheriff's office said the crash happened Tuesday at around 6:18 p.m., on Highway 70 about seven miles east of Westerville.

Authorities said a 2008 Chevrolet Impala driven by Peggie Myers, 58, of Broken Bow, was traveling westbound when it crossed the center line and struck an eastbound 2004 Chrysler Concorde, driven by Madison Dodson, 23, of Arcadia.

Officials said the crash caused the Impala to catch fire.

Myers was transported to Jennie Melham Hospital, in Broken Bow, where she later died.

Dodson was also transported to Jennie Melham before being flown to CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Authorities said Myers was not wearing a seatbelt, but Dodson was.

Arcadia Fire and Rescue, Ansley-Mason City Fire and Rescue, Sargent Rescue, Valley County Ambulance, the Broken Bow Police Department, and Hunter's Towing all assisted with the accident.

The investigation into the crash in ongoing.

LEXINGTON, Neb.-Police in Lexington are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning.

Police said in a news release that Marcus Keyser, 23, of Lexington, was shot and killed in the 800 block of West 9th St.

Man, 23, drowns in Harlan County Lake on 4th of July

As America emerges from the Fourth of July weekend, there’s another important reminder this month of why we should cherish our freedom and liberty.&nbsp; July marks the 100th&nbsp;anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).&nbsp; CCP officials have already been holding celebrations to paint a positive image of their work on the world stage.&nbsp; While the CCP pushes propaganda on the anniversary of its founding, it’s important that Americans understand how the communist regime operates.

To this end, I signed a proclamation designating July as “Victims of Communism Remembrance Month.”&nbsp; Over the years, communism has led to the deaths of nearly 100 million people worldwide.&nbsp; The proclamation ceremony included Nebraskans who came from families and countries ruled by communist regimes.&nbsp; At the event, former State Senator Lydia Brasch shared her family’s story of fleeing the communist regime in Ukraine.&nbsp; Before they fled, her family would pray in the closet with a secret Bible and a candle.&nbsp; She shared how her uncle was shot and killed by the regime after they found a short wave radio in his home in Kiev.&nbsp; They had no freedom of speech or freedom of religion.

Stories like these are still happening today—including in China.&nbsp; As the CCP celebrates their centennial, it’s important we understand how they are actually governing.&nbsp; And it’s important that we recommit to strengthening the American Free Enterprise system, so that future generations of Americans can continue to enjoy the economic prosperity and freedom that has made our country great for almost 250 years.&nbsp; If we want this, America has to ensure that our policy towards China protects the future of capitalism and holds China accountable to their commitments.&nbsp; As we think about the future of the U.S.-China relationship, there are three major areas that need focus: trade, national security, and human rights.&nbsp;

Trade:&nbsp;Over the past several decades, many have viewed China’s growing economy as a major trade opportunity.&nbsp; Unfortunately, China has been an unreliable trading partner over the years.&nbsp; Nebraska’s trade with China peaked in 2012, declining from $1.7 billion in trade to $913 million in 2019.&nbsp; Because of this uncertainty, Nebraska has put an increasing focus on diversifying our trade relationships to ensure that we are not too reliant on any single trade market.&nbsp; To do this, I have led trade missions to Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Vietnam.&nbsp; While the pandemic put a temporary hold on trade missions over the last year, Nebraska will soon be traveling internationally to promote our goods once again.&nbsp;

Furthermore, President Trump sought to address several structural problems in our trade relationship with China in his Phase One trade deal, which was signed in 2020.&nbsp; Since then, Nebraska has seen large purchases of commodities.&nbsp; It is critical, however, that President Biden continue to hold China accountable for their commitments in this agreement.&nbsp; The ongoing presence of U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods serves as a reminder that there is more work to do on U.S.-China relations.&nbsp; President Trump started a conversation about a Phase II trade agreement, and it’s critical that President Biden continue those talks on resolving issues including forced tech transfer and currency manipulation.

National Security:&nbsp;Open shipping lanes are key to America’s trade relationships in Asia.&nbsp; It’s important that the United States continue to challenge the CCP’s attempt to dominate the South China Sea.&nbsp; We should also continue to sell arms to Taiwan and find other ways to support their self-defense to ensure that they remain autonomous.&nbsp;

We must also be watchful on the home front.&nbsp; We must safeguard our research institutions to prevent intellectual property theft.&nbsp; Over the years, the CCP has worked to steal intellectual property from domestic researchers as well as through forced tech transfers from international businesses operating in China.&nbsp; According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “About 80 percent of all economic espionage prosecutions brought by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) allege conduct that would benefit the Chinese state, and there is at least some nexus to China in around 60 percent of all trade secret theft cases.”

Human Rights:&nbsp;As we work on trade and national security issues related to China, it’s also important that we push the CCP to respect human rights.&nbsp; Over the last few years, there’s been growing awareness of the persecution of the Uyghur people by the CCP in Xinjiang Province.&nbsp; The CCP has forced Uyghur people to live in internment camps, where they are indoctrinated with CCP propaganda, made to do hard labor, and reportedly undergo forced sterilizations.&nbsp; In addition to the mass detentions, the CCP is engaging in intrusive surveillance of minority groups to identify and root out dissent.&nbsp; Additionally, the CCP continues to crack down on any dissenting voices in Hong Kong, including the recent forced closure of Apple Daily, a pro-democracy newspaper.&nbsp;

These are just a couple of the ongoing human rights issues in China.&nbsp; It is important that the Biden Administration and State Department use the resources they have available to them to highlight these abuses, and use multi-lateral techniques to push the CCP to respect free speech, political dissent, and religious freedom.

July marks the 100th&nbsp;anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).&nbsp; CCP officials have already been holding celebrations to paint a positive image of their work on the world stage.&nbsp; While the CCP pushes propaganda on the anniversary of its founding, it’s important that Americans understand how the communist regime operates.To this end, I signed a proclamation designating July as “Victims of Communism Remembrance Month.”&nbsp; Over the years, communism has led to the deaths of nearly 100 million people worldwide.&nbsp; The proclamation ceremony included Nebraskans who came from families and countries ruled by communist regimes.&nbsp; At the event, former State Senator Lydia Brasch shared her family’s story of fleeing the communist regime in Ukraine.&nbsp; Before they fled, her family would pray in the closet with a secret Bible and a candle.&nbsp; She shared how her uncle was shot and killed by the regime after they found a short wave radio in his home in Kiev.&nbsp; They had no freedom of speech or freedom of religion.Stories like these are still happening today—including in China.&nbsp; As the CCP celebrates their centennial, it’s important we understand how they are actually governing.&nbsp; And it’s important that we recommit to strengthening the American Free Enterprise system, so that future generations of Americans can continue to enjoy the economic prosperity and freedom that has made our country great for almost 250 years.&nbsp; Gov. Ricketts: 100 years of communism in China

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man has been arrested on allegations that he assaulted a female and held her against her will.

North Platte police said at around 4:24 a.m. on July 2, officers responded to the report of a disturbance in the 2600 block of West 20th St.

Officers arrived and made contact with a female who said she had gotten into an argument with Javin Newbrey, 24.&nbsp;

Police said the victim told officers that, during the argument, Newbrey had placed his hands around her neck. She said she was able to get away, but Newbrey threw her down on the bed and placed his hands over her mouth to prevent her from screaming.

Police said Newbrey let the victim up, but would not allow her to leave and held her, against her will, for over an hour.

The female was able to eventually escape and contact law enforcement.

Officers place Newbrey under arrest on suspicion of 3rd-degree domestic assault and 2nd-degree false imprisonment.

Police said suspected methamphetamine was also found in Newbrey's possession. As a result, he was also jailed on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.

Newbrey was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Officers found the two shooting victims in a car in the parking lot of an apartment complex. 

Both were transported to a hospital, where one man died. 

Police chased down a car that fled the scene, after which five people ran from the vehicle. 

Two of them were arrested for obstruction and one was arrested on a drug charge.

 Police are searching for the other two occupants. 

It was the second shooting at the apartment complex in the last month.
