COVID-19 reported to WCDHD.

While in the Moderate Risk category,
physical distance of 6 feet or greater, wearing face coverings when
outside the home, frequent handwashing (or use of hand sanitizer),
staying home if you are having flu-like or COVID-like symptoms,
disinfecting high touch surfaces, and having at-risk and vulnerable
people remain home are recommended as the greatest tools in reducing

WCDHD moves COVID risk dial up again, risk remains moderate

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-As severe weather moved across the area Saturday evening, things were looking a bit like winter in Perkins County.

Severe storms prompted warnings across southwest Nebraska bringing wind, hail, rain, and continuous lighting.

In Perkins County, hail blanketed the roadways creating a scene that looked more like mid-December than mid-May.

Chances for thunderstorms continue through the overnight.

Hail blankets roads near Grant to create wintery scene

KEARNEY, Neb.-Police in Kearney are investigating after a man was shot during a disturbance.

According to police, officers responded to the area of the 800 block of W. 27th St. at
approximately 2:15 a.m. to investigate a report of possible gunshots.


Police said a short time later, officers received a call from C.H.I. Good
Samaritan Hospital that a male subject, 20, had presented to
the emergency department with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the victim was walking around the 800
block of W. 27th St. when he was approached by five black males in a light-colored four-door car.

Police said a a physical altercation took place involving multiple subjects and, during the altercation, a handgun was discharged several times, striking the
victim one time in the lower leg.

Police said witnesses
reported that following the shooting, the suspects departed southbound
on 9th Ave. in a light-colored four-door car.

Flags to remain at full staff for Peace Officers Memorial Day

Acting United States Attorney Jan Sharp announced that Nathanael J. Brown, 28, formerly of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced today in Lincoln by Chief United States District Judge John M. Gerrard for transportation of child pornography. 

Brown was sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in prison and 7 years of supervised release with special conditions. There is no parole in the federal system. Brown was additionally ordered to pay $3,500 in restitution.

This case began when Homeland Security Investigations (“HSI”) in Nebraska received a cybertip indicating that Kik user “antin5” (later identified as Brown) uploaded a child pornography file on April 29, 2019. 

On February 26, 2020, HSI and Nebraska State Patrol (“NSP”) agents conducted a knock and talk at Brown’s home in North Platte. Brown admitted to law enforcement that he viewed child pornography.&nbsp;Brown said that he used his phone and laptop to browse and download child pornography content, but that he never really saved the files.&nbsp;He also admitted to sharing both image and video content. 

He admitted sharing content as recent as the week before speaking with law enforcement. Brown gave law enforcement written consent to search his cell phone. A review of Brown’s cell phone revealed at least six videos of child pornography, as well as 31 images containing possible or suspected child pornography.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), 

Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. Former North Platte man convicted of transportation of child pornography

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, says that it won’t require vaccinated shoppers or workers to wear a mask in its U.S. stores unless state or local laws say otherwise. 

The Arkansas-based company says vaccinated shoppers can go maskless immediately. Vaccinated workers can stop wearing them on Tuesday.

 As an incentive, Walmart said it is offering workers $75 if they prove they’ve been vaccinated. Walmart said it won’t ask shoppers if they’ve been vaccinated. Workers, however, will need to tell the company if they’ve been vaccinated in order to go maskless.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Officials say the Nebraska state government collected slightly less tax revenue than expected in April. 

The Nebraska Department of Revenue reports April net tax collections of $525 million, less than 1% below the certified forecast of $528 million. 

The lower-than-expected number was driven by individual income tax collections, which were nearly 36% below projections. The lower total more than offset higher-than-expected collections from corporate income taxes, miscellaneous taxes and sales-and-use taxes. 

Tax collections for the current fiscal year are still well above projections.

Nebraska tax collections fall below projections in April

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-During the evening hours of Wednesday, May 12, investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted alcohol inspections in Red Willow County.

In total, 12 businesses were inspected. Two of the businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a non-compliance rate of 17 percent. The two businesses that failed the inspections did not check the minor’s ID.

The businesses that failed the inspections were:

Bottle Shop – McCook (Did not check ID, sold to minor)

N-Stant Convenience Store – McCook (Did not check ID, sold to minor)

Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Things went Milli Vanilli at the North Platte Community Playhouse Thursday evening as the area's finest lip syncers battled it out in the North Platte Area Habitat for Humanity/RDAP Lip Sync Battle 2021.

Building on the success of last year's Battle, the event was moved to the Playhouse to accommodate a larger crowd and more teams and contestants.

Also different this year, the audience acted as the judges.

A total of eight teams participated, four for each organization.

This year's champion was Chris Chada from Team Habitat. Chada performed the Michael Jackson hit Thriller for his first number and Kenny Loggins' Footloose to take the belt.

Funds raised by the event benefit Habitat for Humanity and RDAP.

The first case of the virus variant, officially known as the B.1.617 variant, was found in a Lancaster County resident who has ties to international travelers.

LINCOLN, Neb.-The Nebraska State Patrol is pleased to announce the full implementation of a new online system designed to make the fingerprinting process easier and more efficient for customers throughout the state.

The improved NSP Fingerprinting System allows customers to book an appointment, provide the necessary demographic information, and make payments, all through NSP’s secure online system. A pilot program of the new process has reduced the average time of a fingerprinting appointment by approximately 50 percent. The reduced appointment time has allowed NSP to add fingerprinting appointments at all offices around the state, meaning the wait-time for an appointment is also reduced.

“Our team has worked hard on this new system, with the goal of making the fingerprinting process easier for our customers in all parts of the state,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “The positive results of the pilot program are already being duplicated with statewide implementation.”

NSP provides fingerprinting services for a wide variety of customer needs, including adoption, childcare, concealed handgun permits, foster care, nursing, and many more. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Sports fans in Nebraska may soon be able to bet legally on nearly all collegiate and professional events, but not on the Huskers when they play at home. 

Lawmakers tweaked a gambling regulation bill on Thursday that would allow sports betting, excluding the home games of in-state teams in an effort to pick up enough supportive votes to pass it. 

Some lawmakers have said they aren’t comfortable with allowing bets on collegiate teams, arguing that it could put undue pressure on Nebraska’s student-athletes. 

Other lawmakers say fans are already betting on collegiate teams and argue that the change makes no sense.

A bill introduced to allow county-level concealed carry regulation in Nebraska was narrowed and advanced from general file May 12.

<a href="http://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/search_by_number.php?DocumentNumber=LB236&amp;Legislature=107th" target="_blank">LB236</a>, as introduced by Sen. Tom Brewer of Gordon, would allow counties to authorize residents to carry a concealed weapon without a state-issued permit. A&nbsp;<a href="http://news.legislature.ne.gov/gov" target="_blank">Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee</a>&nbsp;amendment would require counties to consult with their sheriff before passing a permitless carry ordinance.

Brewer offered an amendment, adopted 44-0, to replace those provisions with elements of three other bills related to concealed carry regulation. He said he chose to revise LB236 after the Nebraska attorney general’s office issued an opinion that the bill as originally introduced likely was unconstitutional because the regulation of firearms is a statewide concern that cannot be delegated to counties.

Brewer said there was not enough time left in the current legislative session to respond to the opinion and keep the bill’s original intent.

The Brewer amendment contained provisions of LB173, sponsored by Blair Sen. Ben Hansen, that would allow the transportation of concealed firearms without a permit. The amendment would exempt from concealed carry prohibitions the transportation of a firearm in a vehicle for lawful purposes and carrying a concealed weapon directly to or from a vehicle if the firearm is unloaded, stored in a case and kept separate from ammunition.

Brewer said the change would protect an individual who transports a concealed firearm upon purchase or who travels to the required training to obtain a concealed carry permit.

“Activities should not be criminalized when it is simply an activity associated with what you need to do to purchase [a firearm],” he said.

The amendment added provisions of LB85, introduced by Brainard Sen. Bruce Bostelman, which would require the Nebraska State Patrol to notify the holder of a concealed carry permit four months prior to the permit’s expiration. It also included provisions of Elmwood Sen. Robert Clements’ LB244, which would allow a 30-day grace period to renew a concealed carry permit.

Sen. John Cavanaugh of Omaha said the amended bill would increase clarity around gun laws and make Nebraska safer.

Senators advanced LB236 to select file on a vote of 47-0.

Nebraska concealed carry bill scaled back, advanced

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials say a state prisons food service worker has been arrested on suspicion of unauthorized communication with a prisoner. 

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said late Wednesday in a news release that 38-year-old Nicole Schwab, a food service specialist at the Lincoln Correctional Center, was arrested earlier in the day. 

The release says Schwab resigned upon her arrest for the felony charge. Officials say Schwab had been employed at the prison since June 1.

Nebraska company works to combat impacts of isolation on those with sensory loss

(AP)-McDonald’s is raising pay at 650 company-owned stores in the U.S. as part of its push to hire thousands of new workers in a tight labor market. 

Ninety-five percent of McDonald’s are franchisees, and it’s also encouraging them to raise wages. The fast-food giant followed Chipotle, which also announced pay hikes this week. 

Wages and benefits for U.S. workers have been growing quickly as vaccinations increase and employers try to meet growing demand at restaurants and other businesses. 

McDonald’s said its hourly wages will increase an average of 10% over the next few months to $13 per hour, rising to $15 per hour by 2024.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-If you're familiar with the science of firefighting, you know that constant training is part of the job.

The Hershey Volunteer Fire Department had an opportunity to train with Lifenet of North Platte on Wednesday.

The department worked with LifeNet and their air ambulance on landing zone training which included designating pre-planned landing zones and other logistics that provide the best opportunity for patients to receive care.

The department said the training helps prepare firefighters to work together with agencies like Lifenet in real life emergency situations.
