LINCOLN, Neb. – As you enjoy fall hunting season, it’s important to keep tree stand safety in mind. Accidents in the field can be prevented with careful planning.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission encourages hunters to follow these safety guidelines:

Always check old tree stands for safety. Look at welds, nuts and bolts to make sure they are secure.

Check all tree stand straps and replace any that are weathered or frayed.

Always use a safety harness and lifeline when in a tree stand. Check these to make sure they are not weathered or frayed and are in good working order.

Safety harnesses are often included with new tree stands. Use it, and follow the directions on how to correctly put it on. Another option is to buy a vest-type safety harness which is easier and faster to use.

You should also use a lifeline, which attaches to the tree above your head and is tied off at the bottom of the stand. Lifelines are equipped with a Prusik knot that attaches to the safety harness tether with a carabiner. If you fall, the knot will tighten itself on the lifeline preventing you from falling to the ground.

It is also important to know how to use the relief system strap on the safety harness if you should fall from a tree stand and are suspended. The relief system takes pressure off the arteries in the groin area. Practice hanging from a tree a couple feet off the ground with a friend present to help you out if needed. It’s essential to know how it feels to hang, to get back into a tree stand, and to lower yourself to the ground should you have a fall.

Make sure to have a cellphone within reach if a self-rescue cannot be accomplished, and always inform a friend or family member of your hunt plan so someone knows where you will be and when you will return.

Keep tree stand safety in mind during your deer hunt

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Nebraskans
across the state feel the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. For many
people, who prior to the pandemic faced mental and physical health
challenges and financial strains, the pandemic and its health and
economic effects have propelled them to seek assistance for the first
time.


In
an effort to help individuals and families most impacted by the
pandemic, Lutheran Family Services (LFS) is partnering with the State
of Nebraska to help distribute much-needed CARES assistance. The
CARES Act Response and Recovery funds will allow LFS to serve
individuals and families whose lives have been directly or indirectly
affected by the COVID 19 pandemic. The statewide effort focuses on
four specific areas based on NVOAD data and current, known COVID hot
spots.


LFS
will assist 2,500 Nebraskans through CARES Act funds. For those
individuals and families, funds will help with overdue rent or
mortgage payments, basic needs, and assistance with gaining access to
online platforms for school or telehealth.


LFS
serves individuals and families across the entire state of Nebraska,
with services in 16 locations, including Omaha, Lincoln, Grand
Island, North Platte, Lexington, Blair, and Fremont. The CARES Act
funds allow LFS to provide direct support to individuals and families
in need of assistance as warranted by the pandemic public health
emergency.

its services in response to COVID-19, this partnership with the State

	to stay current with rent or mortgage payment causing a risk of
	eviction or homelessness;

	to stay current paying utility bills and at risk of shut off;

	to access necessary resources such as telehealth for medical or
	behavioral health due to a lack of either a smartphone or a tablet;
	</li><li>
	Inability
	of adults or children to receive online education or training due to
	lack of technology;
	</li><li>
	Lack
	of or inability to maintain enough food or essential items
	(clothing, shelter) and necessities for the individual or family;
	</li><li>
	Require
	short-term financial assistance;
	</li><li>
	Are
	experiencing poverty;
	</li><li>
	Are
	facing mental health or substance abuse issues;
	</li><li>
	Are
	experiencing language barriers;
	</li><li>
	Are
	isolated and/or have limited access to services in remote areas of
	the state.

Lutheran Family Services now taking applications to assist Nebraskans with CARES funding

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man was cited after he allegedly caused a disturbance which included him exposing himself, then was arrested for damaging property.

According to North Platte police, on September 21&nbsp; at 4:37 p.m., officers responded to the 2300 Block of East Philip Avenue for a disturbance.&nbsp; 

Police say upon arrival, Officers met with the victim and witnesses.

Police say officers were advised that 28-year-old Derrick Zalud, had exited his residence and began yelling at the victim and beating on several&nbsp;items around his property.&nbsp; 

Witnesses told police Zalud then pulled down his pants to expose his genitals and buttocks and began&nbsp;making lewd comments.&nbsp; 

Zalud had departed the scene prior to officers arriving.&nbsp; 

Approximately one hour later, police say officers located an intoxicated Zalud in the 2300 Block of East Philip and made contact with him.&nbsp; 

Officers were able to establish probable cause and Zalud was issued a citation for disturbing the peace and indecent exposure.&nbsp; 

Shortly after Zalud was cited and released, Officers again responded to Zalud causing a disturbance.&nbsp; Officers learned that Zalud walked on to a neighboring property and began damaging plants on the property.&nbsp; 

Zalud was again contacted and placed under arrest on suspicion of 2nd-degree trespassing and criminal mischief.&nbsp; 

Zalud was incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center.&nbsp;

For many, hunting or fishing is a relaxing way to spend a day with friends and family. &nbsp;These activities give Nebraskans the opportunity to unwind from the work week, explore the natural beauty of Nebraska, and spend quality time together.&nbsp; They also present the opportunity to pass along a love of the outdoors to the next generation. &nbsp;My son Roscoe and I go on an annual turkey hunt together, and we’ve made many fun memories on our trips together.&nbsp;

Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or beginner, Nebraska offers abundant opportunities to hunt deer, turkey, and upland game.&nbsp; There are deer in every county of Nebraska, and our state has been the site of some legendary trophy bucks.&nbsp; In 1962, Del Austin of Hastings took down a 39-point whitetail with his bow, setting a Pope &amp; Young world record that would stand for nearly 40 years!&nbsp; The impressive buck, nicknamed “Old Mossy Horns,” has become part of Nebraska hunting lore and still ranks fifth all-time among whitetails.&nbsp; Ten years ago, Kevin Petrzilka of Brainard shot a huge, 17-point whitetail buck in Saunders County.&nbsp; With typical antlers measuring 198 2/8 inches, it was named one of the 20 Best Bucks of the Decade (2010s) by&nbsp;Field &amp; Stream&nbsp;magazine.

Nebraska is also one of the nation’s top destinations for turkey hunting. &nbsp;Wild turkeys have become plentiful statewide since being reintroduced by the Commission in 1959. &nbsp;Currently, Nebraska has two turkey hunting seasons, and the birds can be found in every county of the state.&nbsp; Last October, I headed to Dawes County for the Governor’s Pine Ridge Wild Turkey Hunt near Chadron.&nbsp; The Turkey Hunt is a wonderful example of a creative initiative that invites tourism to our state. &nbsp;It showcases the scenic landscapes of northwest Nebraska, puts visitors in contact with wildlife, and allows tourists to enjoy one of Nebraska’s greatest attractions—its kind-hearted and hospitable people.&nbsp; While the hunt’s events are postponed this year, I look forward to other turkey hunting opportunities this fall.

In addition to having plentiful habitat for deer and turkeys, the grasslands of Nebraska host a diversity of upland game species. &nbsp;Ring-necked pheasants, bobwhite quail, sharp-tailed grouse, and prairie chickens all make their home here in the Cornhusker State.&nbsp; The late Lynn Berggren of Broken Bow, who served on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission from 2008 to 2016, was a champion of creating opportunities for pheasant hunting.&nbsp; In 2016, the Commission launched its Berggren Plan for Pheasants. &nbsp;Its ambitious goals were to improve pheasant hunting by increasing pheasants, increasing hunter access to land holding pheasants, and increasing the number of pheasant hunters.&nbsp; Since the plan’s inception, the State has completed 2,100 projects with private landowners, positively impacting more than 187,000 acres of habitat throughout the pheasant range.

LINCOLN, Neb. — A rainbow trout is as beautiful as its namesake, no matter where it appears. But come mid-October, this fish will be swimming in city park ponds and state park lakes across Nebraska.

This is a rainbow anyone can easily catch. Here is how:

Fishing gear and bait – Keep it simple!

Simple rods and reels are best. Fancier ones work, but for young and old alike, the push-button spin-cast reels work well and are the most tangle-free. Since the trout we are after are less than a pound, 4- to 8-pound test line on these reels is more than strong enough.

Hooks should be fairly small with a tip-to-shaft gap of about the width of your little fingernail. Popular styles and sizes are Aberdeen or Bait Holder hooks in sizes 4 to 8. A bobber about the size of a small plum will float this hook when baited. Pea-sized split shot are used to give the baited hook weight when casting into the lake. Remember that smaller is better for hooks, weights and bobbers when trout fishing.

For those who can’t hold still and want to cast, cast, cast, spinners and spoons of less than 3 inches total length are very effective at luring trout. Be warned most come with treble hooks, or three sharp, pointy parts, which are trouble in the hands of a child and painful in the thumb of their parents.

All the bait you need is in your fridge or pantry. Canned corn is the No. 1 go-to trout fishing bait, followed by small, colored marshmallows. Wadded up pieces of white bread, small bits of lunch meat or boiled noodles all work.

The classic rig we saw Opie use in Mayberry, still works today. Your bobber should be 12-to-24-inches above the split-shot weight, which should be 6 inches above the hook at the end of the line. Fish this set-up with a piece of corn on the hook cast out as far out as you can, and reel in periodically until you find the fish. The bobber will “tell” you know when you find them.

Sometimes trout are just plain lazy and swim along the bottom of the lake. If the floating rig isn’t working, remove the bobber and let the loose-line rig sink to the bottom. You will need to watch your rod tip for a jiggle to let you know when you have a bite. Watch other anglers and see what is working for them.

In Nebraska, you can use two fishing poles per person. Hint: Use the second to cast a spinner or spoon lure while the first one soaks with bait. These flashy lures attract trout, which instinctively grab at shiny objects. Cast often and retrieve these lures fast.

Once you snag a trout, be careful when removing the treble hook from the slick and wiggly fish. Holding the trout in a small towel will help no matter how you catch them.

The best place to fish for trout in Nebraska is from a comfortable chair on a well-kept shoreline in a park close to a restroom and not far from the car. You can find exactly these kind of spots from Auburn to Alliance.

Pan sized, 8- to 10-inch rainbow trout are stocked annually during mid-October. The limit is five per day with a total possession of 12. Anyone 15 or younger does not need a fishing license. A Nebraska fishing license, the above gear, and an excuse to get out of the house is all the rest of us need.

Fish for Rainbows in Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb.-Students in the accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center now have additional tuition support available. The College of Nursing announced that the Helene Fuld Health Trust has made a $650,000 gift commitment to help students as they prepare for nursing service.

The gift establishes the Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarship as a permanently endowed fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation. Income from the fund will enable the College of Nursing to award annual scholarships to students enrolled in the accelerated nursing program.

The Helene Fuld Health Trust also provided funds to the college for immediate scholarship awards to help students until the endowment is fully funded. The college has awarded Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarships to 17 current students for this 2019-2020 academic year with awards of more than $2,000 each to help with their tuition.

The Helene Fuld Health Trust of Trenton, New Jersey, is the nation’s largest private funder devoted exclusively to nursing education and students.

UNMC College of Nursing Dean Juliann Sebastian, PhD, said the college is “immensely grateful” to the Helene Fuld Health Trust for its support.

“These much-needed funds are a great source of help to students because accelerated programs require such a time commitment that students cannot rely on employment to provide financial support,” Dr. Sebastian said. “The 12 months they are in the program require intense, concentrated work, and having this kind of scholarship support alleviates some of the stress associated with their financial pressures. Students can then focus more on their studies and building the necessary knowledge and skills to become superb nurses.”

With the American Association of Colleges of Nursing predicting a growing shortage of nurses, Sebastian said the new scholarship fund comes at an important time as UNMC prepares graduates to help shore up the shortage of nurses in Nebraska, especially in rural areas.

“Nurses are needed now more than ever, and we thank the Helene Fuld Health Trust for providing this critical support that ultimately helps expand the nursing workforce,” Dr. Sebastian said.

The university’s accelerated BSN program is a 12-month option for students who already have a bachelor’s degree in another field. The College of Nursing offers the program through its divisions in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Norfolk and Scottsbluff. In the program, students work together in location-based cohorts and participate in course lectures across all locations.

Leonhard Felix Fuld and his sister, Florentine Fuld, founded the Helene Fuld Health Trust in 1935 in honor of their mother, Helene Fuld, who died in 1923. Helene Fuld was interested in health issues, and the foundation was originally dedicated to helping those suffering from illness. The Dawson County Sheriff's Office said the body is that of Eduardo Farias-Garcia, 24, of Lexington, television station NTV&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraska.tv/news/local/body-found-in-gravel-pit-identified-09-21-2020" target="_blank">reported</a>. Sheriff's officials found his body Sept. 14 in the pond south of Lexington after someone called 911 to report seeing what appeared to be a body floating in the water.

Authorities said Farias-Garcia was wearing only shorts and tennis shoes when he was found. He appeared to have been in the water for about a week, investigators said. Results from an autopsy are expected in the coming weeks.

The sheriff's office said investigators are trying to track Farias-Garcia's movements back to Labor Day weekend.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Patients of Great Plains Health (GPH) who were trying to schedule appointments, awaiting test results and other information are having to wait after a statewide computer system went down.

According to GPH,&nbsp;Nebraska Medicine is experiencing a network outage in the electronic medical record system that many of the hospitals in the State share (including Hastings, Norfolk, Beatrice and many medical clinics across Nebraska). Officials say this is not a local problem and the team at Nebraska Medicine is working diligently to solve this issue. 

GPH says thanks to the response of their local information systems department, nurses, ancillary departments, physicians and leadership, Great Plains Health was able to deploy a plan to ensure that patients could be seen utilizing downtime measures.&nbsp; Officials say it was not perfect, but it helped make sure that patients who needed medical care were seen in our clinics and the hospital. 

GPH says they hope the system will be operational soon.

The event is held during the annual observance of&nbsp;<a href="https://oli.org/about-us/public-awareness-campaigns/rail-safety-week" target="_blank">Rail Safety Week, September 21-27.</a>

“Nebraska has a great history in the railroad industry, with thousands of miles of active tracks running across our state,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Operation Clear Track is great reminder for all to practice safety around railroad tracks and never try to beat a train.”

“The goal of Operation Clear Track and Rail Safety Week is to raise awareness of the importance of safe behavior near tracks and trains, in support of OLI’s mission to save lives,” said Operation Lifesaver, Inc. Executive Director Rachel Maleh.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, first responder agencies will be participating in a virtual Operation Clear Track event this year. Agencies across North America will be promoting rail safety through social media messages, by sharing Operation Lifesaver’s #STOPTrackTragedies public service announcements and other videos, and by posting other rail safety information to their department websites. Participants will also be emphasizing the importance of obeying rail crossing and trespassing laws throughout Rail Safety Week.

Welcome fall with these outdoor activities in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb.-Governor Pete Ricketts held a press briefing to provide updates on the State’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Tim Meyers, President of WellCare of Nebraska, joined the Governor for the event.&nbsp; Meyers is also the President of the Nebraska Association of Medicaid Health Plans (NAMHP).&nbsp; He discussed the steps these plans have taken to remove barriers to health care access during the pandemic.

Angie Ling, Incident Commander for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), highlighted the Nebraska Accommodation Project (NAP).&nbsp; NAP provides short-term housing so that Nebraskans can safely quarantine or isolate while protecting household members with a health condition.&nbsp; Through a partnership with the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE), NAP is now providing temporary housing to teachers to mitigate the risk of the virus traveling between households and schools.

Gina Uhing, health director for the Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department, talked about the work of local health teams to support schools.&nbsp; She also discussed changes to the State’s directed health measures pertaining to quarantine and isolation requirements for the school-aged population.

NDE Commissioner Matthew Blomstedt also participated in the press briefing to provide an update on the ways schools are partnering with their local health departments and the State to combat the spread of the virus.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All Nebraskans are eligible for testing through Test Nebraska.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I encourage Nebraskans to continue to sign up, take the assessment, and schedule a time to get tested.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We also stepped up our educational and outreach efforts to make it easier to navigate a system that can often seem complex.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We also offered more—more benefits, rewards, and resources—because during trying times, health shouldn’t be neglected. &nbsp;It must remain a top priority.

Angie Ling: Nebraska Accommodation Project – School Staff

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The School Staff Branch of the Nebraska Accommodation Project (NAP) is a partnership between the Nebraska Department of Education and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;NAP is designed to protect a household member with a health condition that puts them at a higher health risk from exposure to coronavirus.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;NAP provides short-term housing at a local hotel for quarantine and/or isolation outside of someone’s usual household.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The length of stay is 14 days (or until condition changes).

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There is no charge for this service, and Nebraskans can apply online at&nbsp;<a href="http://dhhs.ne.gov/" target="_blank">dhhs.ne.gov</a>.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Right now, the program is providing services to educators as well as meat processing workers, healthcare employers, and first responders.&nbsp; We expect the program to re-open to the general population in the near future.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On average, approved applicants are placed within 24 hours.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Qualifying criteria:

o&nbsp;&nbsp;Nebraska resident with State-issued photo ID

o&nbsp;&nbsp;Employed by any school in Nebraska

o&nbsp;&nbsp;Must be physically working on campus daily

o&nbsp;&nbsp;Must come in contact with children daily on campus

o&nbsp;&nbsp;Has a full-time co-habitant with a high-risk medical diagnosis

o&nbsp;&nbsp;Is able to provide the date and location of exposure to coronavirus

§&nbsp;&nbsp;Close contact is defined as being within six feet of someone who tests positive for 15 minutes or more

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;During the pandemic, circumstances are constantly changing.&nbsp; It’s important to be flexible and adaptable in our ongoing efforts to protect one another and preserve our hospital capacity.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Schools play a vitally important role in every child’s life by providing education, socialization, as well as critical support and safety net services.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Recent updates to the State’s Directed Health Measures provide clarity and consistency in how local health departments across Nebraska are applying quarantine and isolation orders among the school-aged population.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The revisions were a collaborative effort between all 19 local health departments and DHHS.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The changes allow for students who may have been exposed to coronavirus to continue to attend in-class education and extracurricular activities, in lieu of quarantine, in situations where:

o&nbsp;&nbsp;The exposed student self-monitors (or is monitored) for development of coronavirus symptoms and wears a mask.

o&nbsp;&nbsp;The exposure occurred during an extracurricular activity outdoors or in a non-confined space, including gymnasiums.

o&nbsp;&nbsp;The exposure occurred in a confined space, such as a classroom, and both the person with the positive case AND the person who experienced close contact were wearing masks.

§&nbsp;&nbsp;Close contact is defined as being within six feet of someone who tests positive for 15 minutes or more.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Local health departments are committed to providing guidance to school districts on preventing the spread of the virus and taking actions to help keep their students and staff safe.

Gov. Ricketts, DHHS leaders discuss service to medicaid recipients, temporary housing for teachers

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska prison officials announced five more staffers in the Nebraska Department of Corrections recently tested positive for the coronavirus, as numbers from state health officials show 442 people have died and more than 41,000 have tested positive for the virus.

Four of the prison staffers testing positive work at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said in a news release Sunday. The fifth works at the Diagnostic Evaluation Center in Lincoln.

All five are self-isolating at home, the release said. The latest release brings the number of prison staffers across the state infected to 132, the department said.

Union Pacific teams with Safe Kids Worldwide and Chuggington to educate families during National Rail Safety Week

<a>Mid-Plains Community College and the North Platte Area Chamber of Commerce and Development Corporation invite business and manufacturing leaders from across MPCC’s 18-county service area to attend the NE Chamber’s Fall Forum.</a>

The forum will be from 8-9:30 a.m. (CT) Oct. 8, via Zoom webinar.

“The NE Chamber fall forums have been a time-honored tradition among state and local chamber members for years. In addition to offering valuable time with state leaders and candidates in an election year, they offer a chance for frank, two-way communication between Chamber members and leadership on issues affecting business,” said Bryan Slone, NE Chamber president. “We just could not forego the fall forums due to the pandemic, so we reworked them into a model that is arguably even more compelling as we march toward economic recovery.”

Named “Straight Talk with State Leaders,” the forums are designed to inspire community dialogue on economic development and workforce needs unique to each region. They also provide an opportunity for state and local chamber members to engage directly with state legislators and legislative candidates as the 2020 General Election approaches.
