Union Pacific Railroad announced today it has entered into an agreement with Jaguar Transport Holdings LLC to provide short line rail service in the Central Industrial District in Kansas City, a move that will enhance customer service and support regional economic growth.

Union Pacific will lease about 12 acres of land and four miles of track in central Kansas City to Jaguar Transport, a leading transportation logistics company with experience in short line rail, warehousing and transload services.

“Jaguar has a proven track record of providing premier customer service and we believe this operating change will be a win for both railroads, our mutual customers and the local economy,” said Kenny Rocker, executive vice president – Marketing and Sales, for Union Pacific. “Both parties have high expectations for growth under this exciting new deal.”

The change allows Union Pacific to focus on fast, reliable long-haul service from the site in central Kansas City, while Jaguar will offer five-day-a-week short-haul services via its new short line railroad: the Kansas City West Bottoms Railroad.

Union Pacific and Jaguar Transport Holding LLC Primed for Growth in Kansas City

The Annual Re-Ride of the historic Pony Express mail service will be conducted from June 11 - 21, 2025, by the National Pony Express Association (NPEA). The event, celebrating the 165th year anniversary of “the Pony”, will start in Sacramento, CA and end in St. Joseph, MO, traveling west to east this year.

Personal letters and Commemorative letters will be carried in a mochila (a leather square that is placed over the saddle, with four locked cantinas to hold the mail) by horse and rider relays from the Sacramento River to the Missouri River. The first rider will depart Old Sacramento, California on Wednesday, June 11, at 2:00 PM PDT, and the last rider is scheduled to arrive at the Patee House in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Saturday, June 21, at 7:30 PM CDT.

The route will follow the Pony Express National Historic Trail, a component of the National Trails System. The mail will travel 1966 miles across California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas, to Missouri.

Approximately 600 member riders from NPEA’s eight State Divisions will ride relay-style, 24 hours a day, until the mochila is delivered in St. Joseph, Missouri. Each rider will take the Pony Express Oath prior to riding with the mochila, just as the riders did in 1860.

History: The annual Re-Ride is a 10-day, 24 hours-a-day event honoring the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company. The Company carried letters and telegrams from April 1860, to November 1861, between St. Joseph and Sacramento, proving the Central Route through Salt Lake City was passable year round. Their intent was to win a federal mail contract, which, unfortunately, never materialized.

The Hot Sheets: March 27th, 2025

The evacuation order was lifted around 7:30pm Wednesday evening. The fire took place about 9 miles north of Maxwell and burned NW towards Nedian Road where it was contained by fire crews.

Maxwell, Neb. - Crews are on scene battling a grass fire a few miles north of Maxwell. A rave alert has been sent out urging residents to evacuate from N Maxwell Rd to HWY 83 at this time. The Salvation Army is open in North Platte for those who need shelter. Please avoid the area to let crews and first responders work on scene.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Warm temperatures and winds have been a mixture for many grass fires that have been hitting the area and much of Nebraska. Crews are actively battling a grass fire in the Arnold area.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stapleton Public Schools announced on social media there is no practice today for all spring sports due to the range of the fire and smoke in the air. Buses will run accordingly according to the social media post.&nbsp;

Crews battled a large wildland fire north of Maxwell

&nbsp; Lincoln, Neb., March 26 —&nbsp;The Nebraska LEAD Program honored the 29 Fellows of Class 42 during the Nebraska Agricultural Leadership Council’s Annual Recognition Banquet, held Friday, March 21, on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus. 

Hosted in partnership with UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the banquet celebrated the completion of the two-year leadership development program and recognized key supporters who make the program possible.

As part of their graduation, each Fellow received a digital badge from UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, recognizing their intensive two-year study of agricultural leadership, communication and global perspectives. This micro-credential serves as a formal acknowledgment of their skills and can be shared with employers and professional networks to highlight their leadership development.

During the evening, Nebraska LEAD Class 42 Fellows shared insights from their experiences in the program and highlighted key takeaways from their two-year journey. Dr. Terry Hejny, who served as the program’s director during their first year before retiring, delivered the keynote address. He was also honored with the “Allen G. Blezek Friend of LEAD Award” in recognition of his dedication to agricultural leadership development in Nebraska.

“The Nebraska LEAD Program continues to develop individuals who are committed to the future of agriculture and rural communities,” said Kurtis Harms, director of the Nebraska LEAD Program. “Class 42 has demonstrated outstanding leadership potential, and I have no doubt they will make a lasting impact in their communities, businesses and beyond.”

Traffic will be maintained with a pilot car and flaggers. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is May 2025. 

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Work will begin on N-2, west of Mullen 

 (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will resume March 31 on Nebraska Highway 25 (N-25), from reference post 92.68 to reference post 104.67, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Werner Construction, LLC, of Hastings, is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge repairs, guardrail remodel, asphalt overlay and earth shoulder construction. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions and a pilot car with flaggers or temporary traffic signals. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Nov. 2025. 

Nebraska Department of Transportation (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will resume March 31 on Nebraska Highway 25 (N-25), from reference post 92.68 to reference post 104.67, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Werner Construction, LLC, of Hastings, is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge repairs, guardrail remodel, asphalt overlay and earth shoulder construction. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions and a pilot car with flaggers or temporary traffic signals. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Nov. 2025. The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

The Hot Sheets: March 26th, 2025

A total of&nbsp;126 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska,&nbsp;learned about their residency assignments March 21&nbsp;during an event at the Omaha Design Center.&nbsp;The 2025 Main Residency Match®&nbsp;-- referred to as Match Day --&nbsp;is an annual rite of passage for medical students, a day when students across the country learn where they will train&nbsp;for&nbsp;the next three to seven years, depending on the&nbsp;medical area of their choice. 

Students are matched through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs to&nbsp;fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.&nbsp;

Forty-six percent of UNMC medical students are staying in Nebraska for their training, with 41% at UNMC. Fifty-three percent matched&nbsp;in primary care, which includes family medicine, internal medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, medicine-preliminary, medicine-psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics.

Nationally, there were&nbsp;43,237 residency positions.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - The growth of North Platte continues to grow as Sustainable Beer welcomed nearly 1000 guests for Monday’s ribbon cutting ceremony. The event featured FFA Chapters from around the area, residents, guests making a trip across Nebraska and even folks from out of the state. &nbsp;

Eleven guest speakers hit the podium to talk about the excitement of the new plant, the growth of the community and so much more. Guest speakers who attended the event were the following:&nbsp;

Trey Wasserburger – SB Board Member&nbsp;

Taylor Lehr – SB Board Member &amp; Walmart SVP&nbsp;

Gary Person – President/CEO of the NP Chamber &amp; Development Corp.&nbsp;

Monday’s ribbon cutting ceremony marked a big day for North Platte and its economic growth.&nbsp;

“It’s a great day for North Platte, it’s our largest economic development opportunity in probably a century and we celebrated the ribbon cutting of Sustainable Beef and it’s like nothing we have ever seen,” said North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher. “Fantastic crowd, people all over the country, a few from all over the world came to North Platte Nebraska to see this monument event.”&nbsp;

When the plant is fully operational, the plant will see nearly 1,500 cattle head and will employee just a little over 800 employees and U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts stated during his three minutes speak to guest that young families are moving towards North Platte for this new opportunity of employment.&nbsp;

The idea of getting this plant to North Platte and what it takes is a team of leaders to get the job done and Gary Person with the North Platte Chamber was a big hand in getting the project to North Platte.&nbsp;

“We did it!” said Gary Person, President/CEO of the NP Chamber &amp; Development. Person went on to discuss how the talks of the project begin in 2019 and exactly 1,678 days, one hour, and 14 minutes after the initial planning meeting heading into Monday’s ribbon cutting to celebrate the big day with everyone in attendance. &nbsp;

After the conclusion of the speakers, guest had the chance to tour the facility and learn about how it will operate. The guided tours took around 40-50 minutes.

The day also marked a big day for Walmart who has been an investor and will work closely with the beef plant. Progress is being made towards the official opening day and will mark a new era in economic growth for the great city of North Platte, Lincoln County and the state of Nebraska. &nbsp;

Portions of Red Willow State Recreation Area in Red Willow County are temporarily closed after a fire burned approximately 85 acres in the park.

The fire, which was reported about 12:40 p.m. March 22, was contained to the southwest side of the dam and no structures were affected. However, this area of the park — which includes South Lookout and Red Willow campgrounds — will remain closed to camping and hiking until further notice.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though it is suspected to have originated from an unattended campfire at a campsite.

Work will be along West A Street on the east side of Eisenhower School and the road will be&nbsp; closed from Dixie Avenue to the east side of Eisenhower School. This project will start on Monday,&nbsp; March 31st, 2025 until work is complete.&nbsp;

All access to Eisenhower School will be via Lakeview Boulevard.&nbsp;

Please use alternate routes on West 2nd Street and Philip Avenue to Lakeview Boulevard to pick up&nbsp; students at Eisenhower School.&nbsp;

Reminder that there will be no through traffic on West A Street west of Dixie Avenue.&nbsp;

Omaha, Neb. - Union Pacific Railroad has announced the appointment of Christina Conlin as senior vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary succeeding Craig Richardson, who is set to retire at the end of March.

Conlin will oversee all aspects of the company's legal affairs, including commercial transactions and litigation, labor and employment and regulatory matters. She will also lead the company's claims management team.

Conlin joined Union Pacific in Dec. 2024 as senior vice president and deputy general counsel. In this role, she served as a steward of legal affairs, protecting the railroad's reputation, mitigating risk and providing strategic counsel to the senior leadership team. Before joining Union Pacific, she led Goodyear's Legal Enterprise Risk group, which included legal oversight for labor and employment; regulatory affairs; environmental, health and safety; compliance and ethics; and sustainability reporting. She also served as partner at Baker McKenzie in its International Commercial group and held multiple roles at McDonald's Corporation, including European chief compliance officer. Conlin started her career as a private practice trial lawyer.

Ogallala, Neb. - Governor Jim Pillen will make a stop in Ogallala on Monday, March 24 for a town hall meeting. The meeting will take place at the Petrified Wood Gallery. The meeting is set to begin at 11:00am (MT) and will last until 12:00pm (MT).&nbsp;

Governor Pillen will talk about property taxes, the state budget and his main priorities as Governor of Nebraska. Since taking office, Governor Pillen has made trips around Nebraska to host town hall meetings. Governor Pillen made an appearance in Ogallala for a town hall meeting back in March of 2024.&nbsp;

Following the town hall meeting, Governor Pillen will be in North Platte with local, state and federal leaders of Nebraska for the ribbon cutting of North Platte's new beef plant, Sustainable Beef.&nbsp;
