‘Rock Meets Bach’ When the Spectacular Take3 Comes to North Platte

WASHINGTON&nbsp;– Today, U.S. Senators Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) and U.S. Representatives Mike Flood (NE-01), Don Bacon (NE-02), and Adrian Smith (NE-03) announced that their staff will hold Service Academy Days in Bellevue, Norfolk, North Platte, Omaha, Grand Island, and Lincoln.

The events inform high school students about the process to apply for a congressional nomination to one of our nation’s military service academies. Service academy representatives will be on hand to answer questions.

“Home to Offutt Air Force Base and Camp Ashland, Nebraska has long been the home of our nation’s exceptional service members. To continue our state’s proud tradition of military service, I’m happy to host Academy Days for high school students and their parents to learn more about how to apply for nominations to one of our prestigious Military Service Academies,”&nbsp;said Senator Fischer.

“Nebraska has a strong tradition of supporting our military. Each year, I honor that tradition by nominating outstanding young Nebraskans to attend our United States service academies. Fischer, Congressional Delegation Announce Military Service Academy Days Across Nebraska

North Platte, Neb. - Kim Baxter is an optometrist who has been doing mission trips to provide eye care in developing countries for many years, including to Kenya.&nbsp;&nbsp;

About 13 years ago, Kim went on a trip to Kenya with his son Craig, and they were deeply impacted by the poverty and lack of access to healthcare, especially for newborns and expectant mothers.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;After Craig's tragic passing a few years later, Kim worked with his local Rotary club to secure a large global grant from Rotary International to provide medical equipment and training to a hospital in Kenya.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Lots of this has to do with Craig, so his spirit is very much enthralled and a big part of it,” said Kim Baxter.&nbsp;

After Craig's passing, Kim made a promise to continue the work in Kenya in his son's memory, which led to a major global grant project through Rotary to improve the maternity ward and neonatal care at a hospital in western Kenya. This project was highly successful, reducing infant mortality at the hospital by 60% and leading to significant improvements in the hospital's facilities and equipment.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Baxter and his Rotary club have continued to go on annual eye care missions to Kenya, providing eye exams and glasses to thousands of people who have never had access to such care.&nbsp;

The Rotary Club is working to build and equip a medical clinic called the "Craig Memorial Dispensary" in Kenya, named after a Kim’s son Craig.&nbsp; There was initial setback when the local village leader reneged on a promise to donate land for the clinic, but they found an abandoned clinic that they will renovate instead.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The club is working on a $250,000 global grant from Rotary International to provide medical equipment and other infrastructure for the clinic.&nbsp;This project has attracted partnerships with the Kenyan government, a local university, and other Rotary clubs that are providing additional funding and resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;The clinic will provide medical services and training opportunities for local students, helping to address a shortage of healthcare access in the region.&nbsp;

&nbsp;This project has involved many volunteers and donors from the local community and Rotary network and has been described as a story of "divine intervention" and people coming together to do good.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;"For anybody out there that thinks they can't make a difference in the world, particularly, I'm thankful to be a Rotarian because it's linked me up with many other Rotarians. It's given us access to the Rotary Foundation funds for these big projects, these big global grant projects that without that kind of funding behind us, we wouldn't be able to ever get off the ground with the magnitude of the projects that we've been involved in is tremendous,” said Baxter.&nbsp;

At 55 mph that is like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.&nbsp; In Nebraska in 2022, there were over three thousand drivers involved in distracted driving crashes, and in 2023, over 2400.&nbsp;

Seventeen new members were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at North Platte Community College Sunday.

PTK is the world’s largest and most prestigious honor society for two-year college students, and NPCC is home to the Alpha Beta Theta chapter.

Students are invited to join based on their grade point average. To be considered, they must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and have a GPA of at least 3.5.

NPCC’s induction ceremony included a presentation by English instructor Dr. Melissa Pilakowski, a candle lighting and a presentation of yellow stoles, which new inductees will wear at commencement May 9.

MPCC inducts Phi Theta Kappa members

Grisleydi Ortega has been selected as Mid-Plains Community College’s Business Student of the Month for March.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ortega is from Imperial. She graduated from Chase County Schools in 2023 and is the daughter of Paco and Yedith Ortega.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“​I like the opportunities that the campus has to offer, the support and help from instructors and faculty and the fact that it’s close to my hometown,” said Ortega of why she chose MPCC.​&nbsp;Ortega is currently pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business. She is on track to graduate in May of 2025.

&nbsp;​​“After graduation, I plan to transfer to a university and continue studying business​, enhance my skills, and seek opportunities for personal and professional growth,” said Ortega.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was chosen for the Business Student of the Month recognition by MPCC Business Instructor Cathy Nutt.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Grisleydi exemplifies the qualities we value most in our students. Her dedication to academic excellence is evident in her consistent hard work and diligence in all subjects,” said Nutt. “What truly sets her apart is her genuine thirst for knowledge. Ortega is a business/math tutor and works at the fitness center on campus. Imperial student named MPCC Business Student of the Month 

The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District (Central) and Lincoln Electric System (LES) have finalized a power purchase agreement for 20 megawatts of capacity and energy from Central’s Jeffrey Reservoir Hydroplant, located south of Brady, Neb.

The power agreement will go into effect on April 1, 2025, and run through the end of 2037. This coincides with the remainder of Central’s current Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) relicensing.&nbsp;

LES will use the power generated by Jeffrey Hydro to support its service area, which includes Lincoln and Waverly, Neb.&nbsp;

“We’re proud to partner with LES and help deliver on their goal of providing environmentally responsible, low-cost reliable electricity for their customers,” Central General Manager Devin Brundage said. “We look forward to helping LES serve its customers with Nebraska hydropower.”&nbsp;

“LES has a variety of generation resources in our portfolio that provide flexibility, adaptability and stability in an ever-changing energy landscape,” said LES manager of Resource and Transmission Planning Scott Benson. “This partnership with Central boosts our portfolio and contributes to the reliable and affordable power our customers expect. It also brings LES another step closer to achieving our decarbonization goal. We’re proud to partner with Central on this effort.”

Central generates electricity for homes, farms and industry at four hydroplants, one at Kingsley Dam and three on Central’s Supply Canal, including the Jeffrey Hydro. The hydro division diverts water released from Lake McConaughy into the Supply Canal, directs it through several lakes where it travels through hydroelectric plants and delivers the water to the irrigation system (during irrigation season) or back to the Platte River (non-irrigation season).

The diversion for Central’s Supply Canal is located 50 miles east of Central’s main storage reservoir, Lake McConaughy, and 75 miles west of Central’s irrigated area in Gosper, Phelps and Kearney Counties.&nbsp;

LES is a public power utility that provides electricity to homes, businesses and government properties in Lincoln, Nebraska and its surrounding areas. LES is Nebraska’s second-largest retail electric utility based on the number of customers served. With this power purchase agreement, LES’ nameplate resource portfolio—the full capacity of its generation fleet— is comprised of 35% renewable resources, 35% natural gas and 30% coal. Road Closure: E State Farm RD between S Plainview RD and E Plainview RD to be closed Tuesday

Acting United States Attorney Matthew R. Molsen announced that Mikayla Daleness, 26, of Lexington, Nebraska, was sentenced on March 27, 2025, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. 

United Sates District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Daleness to 78 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Daleness’s release from prison, she will begin a five-year term of supervised release.&nbsp;

From summer 2023 into early 2024, Daleness and three others from Cozad worked together to bring pounds of methamphetamine from Colorado to the Lexington-Cozad area where the drugs were distributed. Search warrants for Facebook communications allowed investigators to identify individuals and their residences involved in the distribution of methamphetamine. 

During a January 2024 search warrant at a co-conspirator’s residence in Cozad, investigators found a loaded handgun, ammunition, methamphetamine, and distribution paraphernalia. Search warrants for the residents’ cell phones contained messages showing drug distribution. Recorded jail calls tipped investigators to the group’s travel plans to get more methamphetamine in Colorado.

 A search warrant for a tracking device led investigators to making a traffic stop on February 6, 2024. Daleness was a passenger in the car containing more methamphetamine, THC, and drug paraphernalia. A later search of Daleness’s Cozad residence turned up drug use and distribution paraphernalia.

This case was investigated by the CODE Drug Task Force which is comprised of members from the Lexington Police Department, the Cozad Police Department, the North Platte Police Department, and the Nebraska State Patrol. Investigators from the West Metro Drug Task Force in Colorado also assisted in the investigation.

While addressing child abuse prevention is the core mission of several local organizations, it’s important to remember&nbsp; that Nebraska is a mandatory reporting state. Every citizen has a role to play in recognizing and reporting signs of child&nbsp; abuse and neglect.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During April, the local Child Abuse Prevention Council will promote education and awareness using materials from Bring&nbsp; Up Nebraska. The campaign's signature blue pinwheels symbolize the message of prevention, with blue pinwheels being&nbsp; placed throughout the community as a reminder.&nbsp;

Other planned activities include Dress Blue Fridays, where local businesses are invited to wear blue and take photos with&nbsp; council members to show support for child abuse prevention.&nbsp;

Child abuse and neglect remain serious concerns in Lincoln County. Unfortunately, many children placed in state care&nbsp; are relocated outside of Lincoln County due to a lack of local foster homes. For many children, being removed from their&nbsp; homes is a deeply traumatic experience. Even when placed in loving environments, these children often face unfamiliar&nbsp; and unsettling circumstances.&nbsp;

March 28, 2025 (Lexington, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people after locating credit card skimming devices during a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

Thursday, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a trooper observed an eastbound Mercedes SUV driving with expired license plates near Lexington on I-80. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed a small amount of marijuana and credit card skimming devices. The driver, Omar Reyes Galvez, 33, of California, and passenger, Gerard Rodriguez-Montes De Oca, 34, of Nevada, were both arrested for possession of electronic scanning devices with intent to obtain encoded payment card information. Rodrigues-Montes De Oca also had an active arrest warrant from Nevada.

Perkins County hosting Rock Concert at 2025 Fair with Eve 6

Acting United States Attorney Matthew R. Molsen announced that on March 26, 2025, a multi-agency operation led to the arrests of 8 individuals in central Nebraska on federal drug charges, and the unsealing of several indictments. An additional 5 people were arrested on state charges. Multiple search warrants were also executed.

Those arrested federally and a summary of their charges and the penalties include the following:

A superseding indictment was unsealed charging&nbsp;Manuel Enrique Corona-Ramirez, Shawn Norris, Trevor Hardin, and Omar Gonzalez-Garcia with conspiracy to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine between March 1, 2024 and February 5, 2025. Also listed in that conspiracy count are Reyes Ernesto Garcia-Urquizo and Enrique Martinez, who were arrested a month prior. A conviction on that conspiracy charge carries a possible penalty of not less than 10 years to life in prison, a fine of up to $10 million; and a term of supervised release not less than five years.

A related indictment was also unsealed charging Adelso Saravia and Adriana Zepeda Rivera with conspiracy to distribute over 50 grams of methamphetamine (actual) between October 3, 2024 and November 30, 2024. The penalties on that charge are not less than 10 years to life in prison, a fine of up to $10 million; and a term of supervised release not less than five years.

These cases were investigated by the Cooperative Operations for Drug Enforcement (CODE) Task Force which is made up of law enforcement agencies throughout a 22-county area in west-central/southwest Nebraska in cooperation with federal partners at Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Also assisting in the investigation and subsequent arrests were the Tri-Cities Drug Enforcement Team (TRIDENT) Task Force based around the Grand Island-Hastings-Kearney area, the Cozad Police Department, the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, the Lexington Police Department, the Nebraska State Patrol, the North Platte Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

This effort is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation. OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach. As March Madness winds down, Nebraskans can fill their April calendar with the 2025 Nebraska Science Festival and a full slate of science and technology-related activities.

Presented by the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the annual statewide festival allows participants to discover the importance of science and how it is intertwined in their daily lives. Interactive, relevant and fun activities – for every age and interest – are planned.

 <li><a href="https://www.nescifest.com/participate/moon/" target="_blank">Walk to the Moon Challenge</a>:&nbsp;NE SciFest is challenging everyone in Nebraska to show their love of science by participating in a 30-day exercise challenge that collectively will take us to the moon. The challenge will start April 1 and end April 30. Any type of exercise will count (miles, minutes or steps) and&nbsp;all&nbsp;exercise will be converted into steps for the challenge. The challenge will require us to cover 238,855 miles or 477,710,000 steps, so plan your exercise schedule.</li><li><a href="https://www.nescifest.com/event/ne-scifest-public-expo/" target="_blank">FREE Public Science Expo</a>:&nbsp;Join us at the 2025 Public Science Expo for engaging hands-on learning opportunities. The free public expo on April 26 at The Durham Museum will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Attendees will interact with a variety of science-related booths and hear from the KETV weather team, who will present in The Stanley and Dorothy Truhlsen Lecture Hall at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Admission is free, but tickets are required (and accessible via the NE SciFest website).&nbsp;</li><li>Galactic Peanut Butter Blitz:&nbsp;Available all month long at eCreamery in Omaha’s Dundee neighborhood, science (and ice cream) fans of all ages can enjoy a special festival ice cream flavor of chocolate ice cream, Reese's Pieces, Reese's Cups and cookie dough.</li><li><a href="https://www.nescifest.com/event/mad-science-cafe/" target="_blank">Mad Science Café</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;Join No More Empty Pots and NE SciFest on April 5 from 2-4 p.m. and learn how to make a variety of flavored drink syrups to create milk, fruit and sparkling teas; tapioca and popping boba; and flavored cold foams. Customize your own drink and then mix up some unusual snacks with roasted bugs. Space is limited; registration is required.</li><li><a href="https://www.nescifest.com/event/science-sunday-2/" target="_blank">Science Sunday at The RiverFront:</a>&nbsp;Join the Nebraska Science Festival for Science Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Omaha RiverFront.&nbsp;During this free, family-friendly hour, participants will learn about nature, animals, medicine and more with hands-on science activities (while supplies last).  <li><a href="https://www.nescifest.com/event/metropolitan-community-college-science-day-2/" target="_blank">MCC Science Day</a>:&nbsp;Stop by the Metropolitan Community College&nbsp;South Omaha Campus, Mahoney building, on Saturday, April 12 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., for kid-friendly hands-on activities that encompass science disciplines ranging from physics to chemistry to biology.&nbsp;</li><li><a href="https://www.nescifest.com/event/raptor-trivia-at-kros-strain/" target="_blank">Raptor Trivia at Kros Strain</a>:&nbsp;On April 15, put your raptor knowledge to the test with a thrilling&nbsp;trivia&nbsp;competition from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Kros Strain Brewing in LaVista, Nebraska. Questions will cover a range of topics, from species identification and habitats to hunting techniques and conservation efforts. Prizes include raptor merch that you can find only at Fontenelle Forest!</li><li><a href="https://www.nescifest.com/event/kennedy-steam-night-2/" target="_blank">Kennedy Elementary School</a>:&nbsp;Stop by Kennedy Elementary for a STEAM Family Night on April 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. featuring robotics, rockets, Hovercrafts, fire truck, urban gardening, 3D pens, water science, laser utting and more!</li><li><a href="https://www.nescifest.com/event/seeds-sprouts/" target="_blank">Seeds &amp; Sprouts</a>:&nbsp;Looking for a fun, educational and hands-on activity for the whole family? Bring your loved ones closer to nature with Crete Public Library’s Seeds &amp; Sprouts program! Whether you’re seasoned gardeners or beginners, there’s something for everyone.</li><li>Omaha Science Café: Giorgia Picci, PhD, director of the Cognitive Affective Neurodevelopment in Youth Laboratory at the Boys Town National Research Hospital Institute for Human Neuroscience, will present “The Teenage Brain Today” on April 22 at 7 p.m. at the Slowdown in downtown Omaha.</li><li><a href="https://www.nescifest.com/event/nebraska-science-festival-star-party/" target="_blank">NE Star Party</a>:&nbsp;This event is for all lovers of space science and astronomy.
