Led by the North Platte Pow Wow Committee, the North Platte Pow Wow Parade will feature a dazzling array of participants, including Indigenous dancers, community organizations, honored veterans and decorated floats. Spectators can expect a feast for the senses as the parade winds its way around the Wild West Arena.

The parade route will begin on Charlie Evans Drive and proceed along Scout’s Rest Ranch Road, along Buffalo Bill Avenue and back to Charlie Evans Drive, offering ample viewing opportunities for all. North Platte Pow Wow Parade: A Colorful Display of Indigenous Culture

North Platte Community College will induct students into the Alpha Beta Theta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society April 14. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

It will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

Courtney Johnston, psychology instructor, will be the guest speaker. Other activities will include a candle lighting ceremony and a presentation of yellow stoles, which new inductees will wear at commencement May 10.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

PTK is the world’s largest and most prestigious honor society for two-year college students, and NPCC is home to the Alpha Beta Theta chapter.

Students are invited to join based on their grade point average. To be considered, they must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and have a GPA of at least 3.5.

The Calibraska Arts Initiative will return to Mid-Plains Community College in July as part of its 2024 Summer Tour.

Calibraska uses the arts to build community, culture and inclusive educational exchanges between Nebraskans and primarily California/Los Angeles-based industry professionals.

The instructors for the workshops have years of experience working for studios across the animation spectrum including: Laika, JibJab, Hallmark, ShadowMachine, Netflix and Disney.

All classes will be in the McDonald-Belton Building at the college’s south campus in North Platte. This year’s lineup consists of:

Animation Playground&nbsp;– The class is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon July 8-12 and is open to children ages 7-12. They will learn about animation history, principles and concepts then create their own animations. Activities will incorporate drawing, stop motion, optical toys, paper and clay among other items. The fee is $85.

Animation Afternoon&nbsp;– This creative class is open to ages 13 and older. It will be from 1-4 p.m. July 8-12. Instruction will begin with a review of concepts and methods of animation. Students will then explore a variety of techniques in an open studio format including stop motion, optical toys, digital 2D, hand-drawn animation and project development. The fee is $100.

Storyboarding and Visual Storytelling for TV and Film&nbsp;will start at 9 a.m. and continue until noon, July 8-12. It is open to ages 13 and older. Led by professional storyboard artist Benjamin Carow, the class is designed to introduce storyboarding to new learners. Students will learn about composition, staging and character acting, as well as the art of breaking down scripts and how to put it all together to make a storyboard. Everything will be done with the same tools and methods storyboard artists use to visualize stories in the industry. The cost is $100.

Visual Storytelling and Drawing&nbsp;– Carow will also teach this class, which is open to ages 7-12, from 1-2:30 p.m. July 8-12. Students will play games and participate in a variety of hands-on activities to learn about drawing techniques, composition strategies, storytelling approaches and more. Each day will consist of short presentations and demos followed by interactive exercises. The cost is $85.

Music Video Camp&nbsp;will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 15-19. Open to ages 13-18, this camp will offer a unique opportunity for students to learn how to make music videos using techniques from live action and animation. The focus will be on the basics of animation and video production and the various ways to bring image and sound together. The price is $300.

03/19 North Platte City Council Meeting, Tonight's Agenda

Lincoln County - On Saturday, March 16th, at 4 P.M. dispatch received a report of a vehicle colliding with a train.  The accident was reported to have happened at O Fallon’s Crossing which is about a mile east of Sutherland.  There was an east bound train stopped on the tacks.  The 16-year-old driver of the vehicle did not see the west bound train coming because of the stopped train. 

 The 2 vehicles in front of him crossed safely so he did not check for a second train.  His vehicle sustained extensive damage.  He was transported to Great Plains Health, and it was determined that his only injury was a concussion.  There is no suspicion of drugs or alcohol being used.  It is unknown if he was wearing his seat belt.&nbsp;

U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement

<a>ST. PAUL, Minn.&nbsp;</a>—&nbsp;On March 13,&nbsp;U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE)&nbsp;Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) St. Paul arrested a foreign fugitive wanted in Honduras for homicide.

The 30-year-old unlawfully present Honduran citizen is wanted by authorities in Honduras for the crime of homicide using a firearm.

On March 12, the North Platte Police Department arrested the noncitizen in North Platte, Nebraska, charged him with no operator’s license, and notified ERO of a foreign born national being under arrest.&nbsp;The same day, ERO lodged an immigration detainer with the Lincoln County Jail. On March 13, ERO St. Paul arrested him. He is currently detained at the Phelps County Jail without bond, pending removal proceedings.

“ERO St. Paul is committed to public safety, and a significant part of keeping our communities safe is the apprehension and removal of foreign fugitives to their home countries,” said ERO St. Paul Field Office Director Peter B. Berg. “Well done to the officers and our law enforcement partners involved in arresting this dangerous fugitive.”

Noncitizens placed into removal proceedings receive their legal due process from federal immigration judges in the immigration courts, which are administered by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.justice.gov/eoir/" target="_blank">Executive Office for Immigration Review</a>&nbsp;(EOIR). EOIR is an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice and is separate from the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Immigration judges in these courts make decisions based on the merits of each individual case. ICE officers carry out the removal decisions made by the federal immigration judges.

As one of ICE’s three operational directorates, ERO is the principal federal law enforcement authority in charge of domestic immigration enforcement. ERO’s mission is to protect the homeland through the arrest and removal of those who undermine the safety of U.S. communities and the integrity of U.S. immigration laws, and its primary areas of focus are interior enforcement operations, management of the agency’s detained and non-detained populations, and repatriation of noncitizens who have received final orders of removal. Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with 4-H'er Halzee Etherton and 4-H Development Extension Educator Caitlyn Jacobson about the 4-H Barn Quilts project.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - 4-H is America's largest youth development program across the United States that helps learn skills that will last a lifetime. The age requirement for 4-H is the ages of 8-18. There are many different categories that 4-H'ers can participate in during their time in the program including barn quilts. Barn quilts are unique as they're woodwork, not a blanket.&nbsp;

Hazlee Etherton, a 7th grader at Hershey Public Schools has been involved with 4-H for 6 years. Last summer, she took home the blue ribbon for barn quilts and already has in mind what she wants to use for her project for this upcoming fair season. Etherton is also involved with many different categories in 4-H.&nbsp;

(NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies, arrested three people following a pursuit and manhunt in southwest Nebraska Friday evening.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Friday evening, NSP was informed that the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office was attempting to locate a vehicle believed to be driven by a subject with an active warrant. At approximately 7:15 p.m., a trooper located the vehicle, a Chevrolet Equinox, as it was traveling northbound on Highway 283 near Elwood. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver immediately turned onto a county road and fled westbound. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The vehicle continued on county roads for approximately 30 minutes. During the pursuit, the occupants threw several items out of the vehicle. The suspect vehicle eventually drove into a pasture in Lincoln County, southwest of Gothenburg, and came to a stop. All three occupants fled on foot.

Numerous law enforcement officers arrived at the scene to search the area. After approximately three hours, troopers were able to utilize a thermal drone to locate the subjects. All three subjects were then taken into custody. Additional personnel located the items thrown from the vehicle, which were multiple bags containing methamphetamine.

All three occupants, identified as Brian Titman, 45, of Kearney, David Griffitt, 37, of Trenton, and Madison Arledge, 26, of McCook, were lodged in Dawson County Jail for numerous offenses, including possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, tampering with physical evidence, flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and obstructing a peace officer. Titman and Arledge each had active warrants.

NSP was assisted by deputies from Gosper County, Dawson County, and Lincoln County during this incident.

Mega Millions® Jackpot Increased for Friday Drawing

MARCH 15, 2024 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;—&nbsp; Don’t rely on luck to make roadways safe this St. Patrick’s Day. Nebraska State Troopers will be on patrol for impaired drivers this weekend as part of a nationwide enforcement effort for St. Patrick’s Day.

“Impaired driving is dangerous for everyone,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “If your St. Patrick’s Day plans involve alcohol, have a plan in place to make it home safely.”

Troopers will be working overtime across the state this St. Patrick’s Day. Troopers will be performing high-visibility patrols throughout the state from Saturday evening through Monday morning as part of this operation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest times on roadways across the country. So far in 2024, troopers have made 241 arrests for driving under the influence. That compares to 190 DUI arrests during the same period in 2023.

Here are some tips to avoid driving impaired this St. Patrick’s Day or any time of the year:

(North Platte, Nebraska, March 14, 2024) – Each spring, something magical happens in the heart of the Great Plains. More than 80 percent of the world’s population of sandhill cranes converge on Nebraska’s Platte River valley—a critical sliver of habitat in North America’s Central Flyway. During this time approximately 400,000 of these Sandhill Cranes will spend that time in the North Platte and Lincoln County area.&nbsp;

At sunrise and sunset, the North Platte River is the perfect place to view the spectacular concentrations of sandhill cranes as they awake and take off for another day of feeding and dancing, or as they come to strategically roost for the night. The City of North Platte had previously installed a viewing wall along the riverbank at their public viewing location at 301 W 18th Street in North Platte. This location is used by both visitors and locals alike and has gained more traffic in recent years. With this spot growing in popularity, the City of North Platte felt that expanding the viewing opportunities there would be beneficial.

After looking at several funding sources, they decided to apply for a Watchable Wildlife Grant. These grants are funded through the Wildlife Conservation Fund of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to help develop wildlife-viewing and nature-based experiences in Nebraska. In collaboration with Visit North Platte, the City of North Platte was successfully granted the funding and was able to add two brand new, fully enclosed viewing blinds. Each blind has two windows facing the river that offer stunning views of the Sandhill Cranes.&nbsp;

For those looking to use the area, please read the etiquette signage at the location and please be respectful of the birds while you are there. For sunrise viewing, you will need to arrive while it is still completely dark out, so it is recommended that you first visit the location in daylight to familiarize yourself with the walking path and the blinds. For sunset viewing, please arrive before sunset begins.
