(North Platte, Neb.) — US-26, from reference post 149+76 to reference post 149+96, will be transitioned into two-lane, two-way traffic on the northbound lanes with a single lane in each direction on Oct. 22. Southbound traffic will utilize a median crossover at reference post 149+96, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

JJK of Ceresco is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge repair on the southbound bridge over UPRR. Traffic will be maintained with lane dividers. An 11-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Dec. 2024.

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

The Hot Sheets: October 19th, 2024

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Eddie L. Houpt, age 60, of North Platte, Nebraska was sentenced on October 17, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for one count of distribution of 5 grams or more of actual methamphetamine. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Houpt to a total of 100 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Houpt’s release from prison, he will begin a 4-year term of supervised release.

On June 12, 2022, a Confidential Informant (“CI”) set up a controlled buy from Houpt.&nbsp; Law enforcement provided the CI with $1,300 to purchase two ounces of meth from Houpt.&nbsp; Houpt picked the CI up and drove around for a little while before dropping the CI off.&nbsp; During the drive, the CI provided Houpt the money and Houpt gave the CI a container which had two baggies containing a white crystalline substance.&nbsp; The State Crime Lab confirmed the substance to be 42.68 grams of a meth mixture containing at least 40 grams of actual meth.

This case was investigated by the Tri-City Drug Enforcement Team (TRIDENT). TRIDENT is a task force with law enforcement personnel from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Grand Island Police Department, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Hastings Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, Kearney Police Department, and the Nebraska State Patrol.

North Platte Man Sentenced to Over 8 Years for Distribution of Methamphetamine

Hopkins, age 36, of North Platte, Nebraska was sentenced on October 17, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for one count of conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of actual methamphetamine. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Hopkins to a total of 120 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Hopkin’s release from prison, she will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

Between July 2022 and February 2023, Hopkins led an organization responsible for distributing meth and fentanyl in and around the North Platte area.&nbsp; The group was responsible for the distribution of pounds of meth.&nbsp; She and other coconspirators were subjects of multiple controlled buys, search warrants, and arrests.

Three controlled buys from Hopkins and co-defendant, Joey Romero, occurred in July of 2022.&nbsp; On July 7, 2022, a Confidential Informant (“CI”) purchased 6.2 grams of meth mixture from Hopkins and Romero.&nbsp; On July 13, 2022, the same CI purchased 28.4 grams of meth mixture from Romero in Hopkins’ car in a grocery store parking lot.&nbsp; On July 29, 2022, the CI purchased 26 grams of meth actual from Hopkins and Romero.

Two controlled buys from Hopkins and Romero occurred in August of 2022.&nbsp; On August 2, 2022, the CI purchased 26 grams of meth actual from Hopkins in a hotel room occupied by Hopkins and Romero.&nbsp; On August 17, 2022, the CI purchased 10 pills from Hopkins at her house.&nbsp; The pills later tested positive for meth and fentanyl.

On January 30, 2023, the CI purchased 36 grams of meth actual from Hopkins and a coconspirator at Hopkins’ residence.&nbsp; A search warrant was served on Hopkins’ house on February 7, 2023.&nbsp; During the search, law enforcement found multiple baggies of meth throughout the house, to include: the bedroom, Hopkins’ purse, and in a toilet of a bathroom.&nbsp; Law enforcement also found 2 bongs, 29 pills, owe notes, 3 scales, spoons with residue, 224 rounds of 9mm ammunition, a box of Winchester 380 ammunition with 23 rounds in it, and empty baggies in the home.&nbsp; The baggies of meth were tested by the State Patrol Crime Lab.&nbsp; The lab confirmed the samples contained 35.85 grams of a meth mixture.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Romero pleaded guilty and is set for sentencing on December 12, 2024.

Cattle producers can maximize the productivity of their farm ground while improving soil health by grazing cover crops.

Producers can learn more about the benefits of cover crop grazing and practical management strategies to optimize productivity from both University educators as well as producers during the 2024 Cover Crop Grazing Conference.

The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (CT) at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte.

“The Cover Crop Grazing Conference is designed to give producers timely, practical information they can immediately apply to their operations,” said Mary Drewnoski, UNL beef Extension specialist who will be presenting about her research findings at UNL. “With expert insights, up-to-date research, and producer perspectives, attendees will not only gain valuable knowledge but also have the chance to interact directly with both industry leaders and fellow producers. Whether you’re just starting with cover crops or looking to fine-tune your system, this event will be worth your time,” she said.

The event will include a trade show, presentations about annual forages for winter grazing, selecting and using temporary fence, planting dates and forage production, and insights from a producer who has effectively incorporated cover crops into his farming and ranching business.

“Cover crops and annual forages are becoming increasingly important tools for cattle producers looking to maximize the productivity of their land while improving soil health,” Drewnoski said. “This conference provides a great opportunity to learn about new research-backed strategies and real-world practices that can boost profitability and sustainability.”

Cover Crop Grazing Conference scheduled for Nov. 6 in North Platte

The 4S Goat Expo will be at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds this weekend (October 19 – 20).&nbsp; Speakers include Carl and Emily Whitworth of Dole Texas.&nbsp; They are a sixth generation family raising Kensing Spanish Goats, fine wool club lambs and Angus-Saler crossbred heifer bulls.&nbsp; They will discuss Sustainable Spanish Goat production.&nbsp; Kyle Davis will discuss Managing a Dairy Goat Operation. Kyle Davis along with his wife Echoe and their three children own and operate D5 Creek Farm. 

They are a herd of ADGA registered Nubian and Lamancha dairy goats located in southeast Nebraska.&nbsp; Extension Livestock Educator will discuss Practical Feed Rations for Goat Production.&nbsp; There will be a producers Panel at the end of the seminar.&nbsp; The seminar will start at 10:00 am and end at 4:00 pm.&nbsp; Sunday will have a showmanship clinic and a goat sale.

The cost will be $30 per person if pre-registered or $35 at the door.&nbsp;

Randy SanerThe 4S Goat Expo will be at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds this weekend (October 19 – 20).&nbsp; Speakers include Carl and Emily Whitworth of Dole Texas.&nbsp; They are a sixth generation family raising Kensing Spanish Goats, fine wool club lambs and Angus-Saler crossbred heifer bulls.&nbsp; They will discuss Sustainable Spanish Goat production.&nbsp; Kyle Davis will discuss Managing a Dairy Goat Operation. Kyle Davis along with his wife Echoe and their three children own and operate D5 Creek Farm. They are a herd of ADGA registered Nubian and Lamancha dairy goats located in southeast Nebraska.&nbsp; Extension Livestock Educator will discuss Practical Feed Rations for Goat Production.&nbsp; There will be a producers Panel at the end of the seminar.&nbsp; The seminar will start at 10:00 am and end at 4:00 pm.&nbsp; Sunday will have a showmanship clinic and a goat sale.The cost will be $30 per person if pre-registered or $35 at the door.&nbsp;

&nbsp; LINCOLN, Neb. – (October 17, 2024) -&nbsp;Visit Nebraska’s application cycle is now open for both the Visit Nebraska Marketing Grand Program and Community Impact Grant Program. The programs offer funding opportunities to organizations to promote their events, destinations, community or region to travelers.

“Keeping Nebraska an exceptional place to visit is always a top priority, and the grant program is key in doing that,” said John Ricks, Visit Nebraska executive director. “Destinations and tourism attractions can get assistance to promote their marketing campaigns and events to travelers, all to showcase to visitors what our state has to offer.”

The Visit Nebraska Marketing Grant Program encourages applicants to request funding for a variety of marketing activities to promote their destination or event which include development of professional photography, participating in tourism industry seminars, taking part in a variety of marketing efforts and more.

Through the Community Impact Grant program, large-scale events can apply for marketing assistance to attract out-of-state visitors in an effort to generate favorable national or international press coverage for the state.

The grant cycle is open until December 18, 2024. Grant recipients will be announced February 14, 2025. Attorney General Mike Hilgers is pleased to announce the upcoming addition of a satellite location of the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office in Ogallala, Nebraska. The Attorney General’s Office currently has two outstate investigators in western Nebraska. The expansion is part of the Attorney General’s vision to have more on-the-ground presence to support law enforcement in Greater Nebraska. 

“This is an exciting day for our office. Opening this office will enhance our ability to recruit and retain talented lawyers to western Nebraska, and it will expand our ability to assist our law enforcement partners in this portion of the state,” Attorney General Hilgers expressed at the opening event in Ogallala.

The area is office and conference space shared within the Nebraska Association of County Officials (NACO) new office building, officially opened with a ribbon-cutting on Thursday, October 10th. 

"NACO is proud to have the Attorney General share our commitment to serving all areas of the state, partnering with us by using space in NACO's new facility in Ogallala," stated Jon Cannon, Executive Director, Nebraska Association of County Officials.

This satellite addition will increase the AGO's reach in supporting criminal cases when surrounding county attorneys seek support in prosecuting cases.

(Audio) NPCS 22nd Annual G.R.E.E.N event scheduled for Oct. 26th

The public is invited to attend a free Trunk-or-Treat Oct. 28 on the North Platte Community College South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

Trick-or-treating will be available from 5-7 p.m. in the northeast parking lot and under the Pavilion, north of the McDonald-Belton Building.

NPCC’s Student Life Department is offering the event to encourage community engagement and provide a fun activity leading up to Halloween.

Gardening Back to Basics Classes Offered in October and November for North Platte and Scottsbluff

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– A photography exhibition celebrating 40 years of the University of&nbsp; Nebraska-Lincoln’s Nebraska Women in Agriculture program will be on display through Nov.&nbsp; 20 in North Platte at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center, 402 W. State&nbsp; Farm Road.&nbsp;

A free lecture by Jessica Groskopf, director of Nebraska Women in Agriculture, will be held at&nbsp; the center at 6 p.m., on Nov. 18. She will speak about the historical role of women, their current&nbsp; challenges and their future involvement in agricultural sciences.&nbsp;

The exhibition, “Legacy of Leadership: Faces of Nebraska Women in Agriculture,” aims to&nbsp; highlight the vital role of women in Nebraska’s agricultural landscape with a collection of over&nbsp; 70 portraits captured at the 2024 Nebraska Women in Agriculture Conference by renowned&nbsp; photographer John Noltner. Each portrait is accompanied by the subject’s short answer to the&nbsp; question, “what has called you to this work?”&nbsp;

"We are thrilled to present this unique exhibition honoring the resilience, innovation and&nbsp; enduring impact of women in agriculture," Groskopf said. "Through these powerful portraits, we&nbsp; hope to encourage discussion about the important role of women in our state’s largest industry."&nbsp;

The traveling exhibit has been featured at this year’s Nebraska State Fair, Husker Harvest Days&nbsp; and in the Loft Gallery in the Nebraska East Union in Lincoln.

Through exhibits, workshops, lectures,&nbsp; on-site studios, and distance learning, “A Peace of My Mind” leads transformative experiences&nbsp; that help a polarized world rediscover the common humanity that connects us.

The Hot Sheets: October 15th, 2024

North Platte, Neb. - Community members will gather on Wednesday, Oct. 23rd at Venue 304 in North Platte to hear the finalists' pitches for this year's Big Idea North Platte. The social hour begins at 5:00pm with live pitches beginning at 6:00pm. Changes have been made for this year's program which has the contestants meet with Individual's to chat about their product. Voting/judging has been changed for this year's event as well.&nbsp;

Contestants in the community category are competing for prizes. 1st place is $10,000, 2nd place is 5,000, and 3rd place is $2,500. The youth category is competing for scholarships to Mid-Plains Community College and the prizes are 1st place is $2,500, 2nd place is $1,500, and 3rd place is $1,000.&nbsp;

Registration for spring classes at Mid-Plains Community College will begin on Monday, October 14, 2024.

The first round of classes begins in January, and students are encouraged to sign up early for any they plan to take.

A variety of formats are available to make pursuing a higher education convenient and accessible for both traditional and non-traditional students. On-site, online, distance learning and hybrid options are offered.

Mid-Plains also has a dual credit program that allows high school students to take classes that count toward both high school and college credits simultaneously.
