March 20, 2025 (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin March 24 on N-2, from reference post 277.89 to reference post 280.41, and on N-21 from reference post 73.08 to 73.59, and on N-70 from reference post 75.01 to 75.24 according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Paulsen, Inc., of Cozad, is the contractor for this project. Work includes concrete pavement repair, storm sewer, lighting, concrete paving, milling, and asphalt overlay. Traffic will be maintained with traffic shifts, temporary traffic signals, and a pilot car and flaggers. On-street parking will be affected during construction and a 10-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Sept. 2025. 

The purpose of these projects is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, March 19, 2025, in Room 200 of the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Cynthia Duncan started the meeting with a roll call. I-80 closure began yesterday morning from Lexington to Lincoln and as the day went on closures of I-80 went from North Platte to Gretna before finally having I-80 closed from border to border.

I-80 now open across Nebraska

The Nebraska Department of Transportation announced that I-80 is now closed from North Platte to Gretna. Parts of Highway 30 from North Platte to Grand Island is closed. Many highways out east are closed.&nbsp;

According to the Nebraska 511, I-80 is now closed from North Platte to Lincoln due to the winter weather. Highway 30 is also closed from North Platte to Grand Island. Travel is not advised at this time as crews are working to clean the road.

According to Nebraska 511, I-80 is now open from Cozad to Lexington but is completely covered in slush, ice. I-80 remains closed from Lexington to Lincoln. Crews are out all across the State cleaning up the latest snowstorm to blast Nebraska.&nbsp;

According to Nebraska 511, Highway 30 from Cozad to Lexington is now open but is completely covered in slush, ice. Highway 30 from Lexington to Grand Island remains closed.

NE 511 says expect blowing snow. While travel is still not advised, many highways heading towards Lincoln are closed at this time. NE 511 still shows that I-80 is closed from Cozad to Lincoln.&nbsp;

Winter conditions have once again struck the state of Nebraska and Interstate 80, and Highway 30 are both closed from Cozad to Lincoln according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation 511 website. The closure is due to blizzard conditions. &nbsp;

Visibility is low in some areas due to blowing snow causing almost whiteout conditions. The Nebraska Department of Transportation and the Nebraska State Patrol have stated travel is not advised today. &nbsp;

The storm gets worse as you travel to the Eastern part of the state. If you do need to travel, travel at reduced speeds and give yourself plenty of stopping room as there may be icy spots on the road.&nbsp;

Union Pacific Railroad and the National Conference of Firemen &amp; Oilers (NCFO) announced a tentative agreement that will be sent to NCFO members for ratification. The tentative agreement covers a five-year term and includes wage increases, additional vacation time, health and welfare benefits and minor work rule changes.

Union Pacific and National Conference of Firemen & Oilers Reach Tentative Agreement

The NFHS has selected Eden Coppersmith, a senior at Paxton High School in Nebraska, as the recipient of the 2025 National High School Heart of the Arts Award.

The National High School Heart of the Arts Award was conceptualized by the NFHS in 2014 to honor individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive heart of the arts and represent the core mission of education-based activities.

Eden Coppersmith's story is one of remarkable resilience and determination. Born with selective mutism and Spina Bifida, Eden faced significant challenges from a young age. Her journey began with a single word – word that felt like an impossible leap. By fifth grade, she managed only three words in class the entire year. In sixth grade, her voice disappeared entirely. It wasn’t that Eden didn’t want to speak; her heart longed to be heard, but her mind refused to let her.

Despite her silence, Eden sought connection in various ways. She joined a youth group, played the flute, managed the volleyball team and competed in track events using her wheelchair. Art, however, was her true passion. Her talent earned her ribbons at local shows, including two first-place awards. Yet, no matter how much she accomplished, the isolation of being “the girl in the wheelchair who doesn’t talk” weighed heavily. Very few people ever heard her voice.

Among those few was her speech coach – someone Eden trusted because of her unlikely friendship with the coach’s daughter. One day, Eden shared an extraordinary goal: she wanted to join the speech team. She no longer wanted to be defined by her silence. She wanted to be heard. The coach admired Eden’s courage but knew the obstacles. She had never spoken in class, let alone in front of an audience. Still, Eden was determined.

Her first speech, about Spina Bifida, tackled the condition that kept her in a wheelchair. But her wheelchair wasn’t her greatest challenge – her silence was. The first two meets came and went without her speaking a word. By the third meet, Eden rolled forward when the judge called her number. She opened her mouth and spoke. Her voice was so soft it was nearly inaudible, but she spoke. Her coach held back tears, knowing the enormity of what Eden had just achieved.

That first year, Eden consistently finished last. Her volume was too low, and she rushed through her speeches. But she kept going. Slowly, her confidence grew. She began speaking to a few classmates, and her progress became noticeable. With help from her school’s resource educator, Eden entered Nebraska’s first Unified Speech Event and performed at state. Using a microphone, she shared about her journey at a summer camp for children with disabilities, bringing several mothers of selectively mute children to tears. She gave them hope they hadn’t felt in years.

Her junior year, Eden wrote a speech about selective mutism and performed a duet with her best friend. The two practiced tirelessly, even rehearsing in the freezing cold of an empty parking lot to help Eden project her voice. Their determination paid off. They earned 10th place at a meet, Eden’s first medal. Encouraged, she placed second with her individual speech at the next competition and became a vital part of her team, helping them secure victories at conferences and districts.

By her senior year, Eden was no longer just finding her voice for herself – she was using it to speak for others. Her persuasive speech focused on advocating for financial reforms for people with disabilities. She began speaking more during practices – and even in class. Her journey, once about overcoming silence, had transformed into a story of resilience and purpose. Eden proved that even the quietest voices can inspire change, starting with just one word.

Along with the national recipient, six students and one performing arts educator were chosen by the NFHS National High School Heart of the Arts Award Selection Committee as section winners of the award. The 2025 National High School Heart of the Arts section honorees are listed below, accompanied by a brief description of their accomplishments.

North Platte, Neb. - Effective April 1, 2025, residents must begin using their yard waste carts for yard waste only, there cannot be any form of trash in them. This is mandatory through November 30, 2025.

-&nbsp; Yard waste must be placed in the container with the yard waste sign or brown lid. Lids must be closed.

- Do not pack yard waste in cart, it sticks to the inside of the cart and cannot be completely dumped. We will not make return trips to dump the cart.

- Any stick or branch you cannot mow over should be placed in your household cart, hauled to the transfer station at no cost or call 535-6702 for the chipper truck. Lid must be allowed to close.

- No plastic leaf bags will be accepted or picked up.

- Refuse going to the transfer station must be free of yard waste. No yard waste will be accepted in the household container.

- Non-compliant residents will face extra charges for trash in the yard waste carts.

Yard waste carts to be used for yard waste beginning April 1

North Platte, Ne - March is National Agriculture Month, and Eagle Media is spotlighting businesses and organizations giving back to agriculure this month. For years, homeschool students either had to take a minimum number of classes at public schools to participate in Future Farmers of America, or missed out entirely. Now a new Nebraska Agriculture Acadamy has entered the picture over the last few years. It started with former public school teachers Breann Zimmer, and Ann Dvorak in 2022 and they ave since been joined by Katie Shadbolt who are all Nebraska Certified Agriculture Educators. The three teamed up to create an online agriculture education academy for homeschool students.

Zimmer, who joined Derek Beck this week on Sandhills Spotlight on Z 93.5 Country says, "The Nebraska Agriculture Academy provides hybrid education to students grades 7-12. Our goal is to make it possible for homeschool students across Nebraska to participate in FFA and learn about agriculture."

North Platte Community College will induct students into the Alpha Beta Theta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society March 30. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

It will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

Dr. Melissa Pilakowski, English instructor, will be the guest speaker. Other activities will include a candle lighting ceremony and a presentation of stoles, which new inductees will wear at commencement May 9.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

PTK is the world’s largest and most prestigious honor society for two-year college students, and NPCC is home to the Alpha Beta Theta chapter.

Students are invited to join based on their grade point average. To be considered, they must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and have a GPA of at least 3.5.

For parts of the listening area, the National Weather Service, North Platte Office (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning to go into effect for parts of the listening area beginning 9:00am (MT)/10:00am (CT) and will be in effect until 7:00pm (MT)/8:00pm (CT). Areas in the warning include north of Interstate 80 and stretches from the Panhandle into eastern side of the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Temperatures will reach up into the 70s with gusty wind gust and low humidity that could possibly create fire conditions. Many local area fire departments have issue fire bans during this time. Areas in Central, Western Nebraska have already experienced fires in the past few weeks as temperatures have risen, and winds have been strong.&nbsp;

While temperatures are on the rise, the NWS predicts potential storm to hit the region Tuesday night into Wednesday. The storm could possibly bring in some snow along as it makes it way over the area. A chance for snow to hit the region is very low for much of the listening area.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: March 16th, 2025

&nbsp;(North Platte, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after a pursuit in Lincoln County.

Friday, at approximately 1:15 a.m., a trooper observed a Mercedes sedan traveling at 89 miles per hour on Interstate 80 near mile marker 199. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to yield and accelerated to speeds well over 100 miles per hour. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The driver fled westbound on I-80 with speeds reaching 130 miles per hour. Troopers were able to successfully deploy stop sticks to slow the vehicle as it approached the North Platte area. The vehicle then exited I-80 at mile marker 179 and began traveling northbound. The vehicle then continued westbound on Highway 30 through North Platte before coming to a stop near the Lincoln Highway RV Park.

The driver then fled on foot and a trooper utilized a taser to take the suspect into custody. The driver, Joseph Solie, 46, of Lincoln, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, possession of marijuana – one ounce or less, possession of drug paraphernalia, and numerous traffic violations. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

<a>March 14, 2024 (Lincoln, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>—&nbsp; Don’t push your luck this St. Patrick’s Day by not planning for a sober driver.&nbsp;Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) will be on patrol for impaired driving this weekend as part of a nationwide enforcement effort for St. Patrick’s Day.

“Impaired driving is dangerous for everyone on the road,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “The last thing we want is for this fun weekend to turn tragic. If you’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with alcohol, plan for a sober driver.”

Troopers will be working overtime across the state this weekend to ensure that everyone gets to and from their festivities safely. If you see an impaired or dangerous driver, report it to the NSP Highway Helpline by calling *55.

Troopers will be performing high-visibility patrols throughout the state from Saturday, March 15, through Monday, March 17, as part of this operation. This effort is made possible thanks in part to a grant for $20,172 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

The event will take place on April 14, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00&nbsp; PM at the West Central Research, Extension, and Education Center. This free event is open to&nbsp; anyone interested in gaining insight into the challenges faced by individuals and families living&nbsp; in poverty.&nbsp;

During the interactive exercise, participants will be assigned to family units, each facing a&nbsp; unique life scenario that reflects real-world challenges encountered by low-income families.&nbsp; These scenarios highlight the difficult choices families must make in managing limited financial&nbsp; resources.&nbsp;

The simulation’s interactive component involves visiting various “agency” tables, where&nbsp; participants can access assistance, gather information, or attempt to resolve issues related to&nbsp; their assigned scenario. Local volunteers, many of whom already work with these agencies, will&nbsp; staff the tables, helping participants experience the barriers families often face when trying to&nbsp; improve their circumstances.&nbsp;

Past participants have found the simulation to be an invaluable and eye-opening experience. It&nbsp; is widely regarded as a highly sought-after training opportunity.&nbsp;

Since it became a 501c3 organization in&nbsp; November 2018, financial assistance to residents has resulted in $774,456 paid to local landlords, utility&nbsp; companies, childcares, mechanics, and other businesses. $52,358 has been used to support Trainings&nbsp;&nbsp;

and Collaborative Outreach in promoting services of local organizations. There has been $363,567 for&nbsp; contracts that provide direct and indirect services to local families and at-risk youth.

Families 1st Partnership and UNL Extension to Host Poverty Simulation in Lincoln 

KEARNEY – More than 60 high school seniors will begin their studies at the University of Nebraska at Kearney this fall as members of a prestigious health science program.

Representing communities across the state, the students selected for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/health_sciences/scholarshipprograms.php">Kearney Health Opportunities Program</a>&nbsp;(KHOP) demonstrate both academic excellence and a commitment to serving rural areas as future health care professionals.

“Improving access to health care in rural Nebraska starts with investing in the next generation of providers. Through the KHOP program, we are equipping passionate and dedicated students with the education and support they need to make an impact in the communities that need them the most,” said Peggy Abels, director of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/health_sciences/index.php">UNK Health Sciences</a>.

According to a report from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, more than 80% of the state’s health diagnosing and treating practitioners are based in metropolitan areas, creating an accessibility issue for many rural residents.

The KHOP program was created to help even the playing field.

Launched in 2010, it’s designed to grow the state’s health care workforce by recruiting and training students from rural Nebraska who are committed to practicing in these communities as professionals. The program offers financial assistance, academic support and professional development opportunities, with many participants receiving full-tuition scholarships to attend UNK and guaranteed admission to UNMC.

KHOP members can study in the fields of dental hygiene, dentistry, medical laboratory science, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant and radiography.

Participants also receive a $3,000 room waiver through the KHOP Learning Community. A requirement for freshmen, the one-year residential learning community gives students a chance to explore various health care careers while receiving support and guidance as they transition to college. KHOP members meet with health care providers and tour medical facilities throughout the region, better preparing them for professional school and beyond.

More than 160 students are currently part of KHOP, and the 62 high school seniors accepted for fall 2025 represent the second-largest class in program history. A record-breaking 72 students were admitted last year.

“By growing our own health care workforce, we’re taking an important step toward addressing the provider shortage and strengthening rural health care for years to come,” Abels said. “It’s very encouraging to see such an outstanding group of students who are committed to rural health and making a real difference in their hometowns.”

UNK welcomes 62 future health care professionals through KHOP program

KEARNEY – Hannah Reeve grew up in the small town of Potter in the Nebraska Panhandle, where she saw firsthand the challenges created by the state’s mental and behavioral health workforce shortage.

“I know a lot of people who struggle with their mental health, and there really weren’t any resources available for them in the Panhandle,” Reeve said, specifically recalling a high school classmate who traveled two hours into neighboring Wyoming for therapy services.

“That’s something that has always interested me, closing that gap in support for people who live in my area,” she added. “I want to lead by example to expand access to those resources and hopefully encourage others to do the same.”

Now a senior at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Reeve is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/sociology/index.php">studying sociology</a>&nbsp;with plans to return to western Nebraska to work in social services after graduating in December.

She’s also among the nearly 200 students currently pursuing a&nbsp;<a href="https://catalog.unk.edu/undergraduate/departments-programs/sociology/behavioral-mental-health-minor/">minor in behavioral and mental health</a>&nbsp;at UNK.

Launched in fall 2020, that program was created with a primary goal of increasing the number of behavioral and mental health professionals in the state.

“In central and western Nebraska, there’s a real need for people working in the behavioral and mental health professions. Not only do they support individuals in crisis but they also strengthen families, workplaces and entire communities,” said Suzanne Maughan Spencer, an associate professor and chair of the UNK Department of Sociology. “As the need for these professionals continues to grow, investing in their education and development is critical to ensure everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, Nebraska has less than half of the behavioral health workforce needed to adequately meet the state’s needs. All but five of the 93 counties are designated as mental health professions shortage areas, and 23 counties don’t have any behavioral health providers at all.

The behavioral and mental health minor uses an interdisciplinary approach to help prepare students for these careers. Housed in the Department of Sociology, it also includes courses from counseling and school psychology, family science, psychology and social work.

“It’s a very hands-on program,” said Reeve, who currently works as a registered behavior technician at The Spectrum Center for Autism in Kearney. “Every course that you take is completely different, so you’re learning a variety of skills that you really wouldn’t get anywhere else.”

There are two emphasis areas to choose from – behavioral and mental health or alcohol and drug counseling – with both options comprised of classes across multiple disciplines. All of the courses for the alcohol and drug counseling emphasis are pre-approved by the Department of Health and Human Services, so they count toward provisional licensure as an alcohol and drug counselor in Nebraska.

UNK offers graduate programs in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/csp/clinical-mental-health-counseling.php">clinical mental health counseling</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/csp/school_psychology.php">school psychology</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/csp/school-counseling.php">school counseling</a>, as well as an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/csp/graduate-certificate-alcohol--drug-counseling.php">alcohol and drug counseling certificate program</a>.

The behavioral and mental health minor is perfect for students interested in those programs because it offers valuable insight and experiences at the undergraduate level, Maughan Spencer said.

It also equips students with knowledge and skills that can enhance other majors and careers, such as nursing, occupational therapy, social work, public health, human resources, criminal justice and Spanish translation and interpretation.

“Most people work with people, so we need to understand how to best serve each other,” Maughan Spencer said. “We’re not all the same – in times of stress we may respond differently. It’s important to recognize that and know when people should be guided to behavioral and mental health resources.”

UNK senior Jordan Soto-Stopak is studying psychology with minors in criminal justice and behavioral and mental health. She wants to work in federal law enforcement.

Jordan Soto-Stopak, a UNK senior from Albion, added the behavioral and mental health minor during her first year on campus, when she was still undecided about her future plans.

“It really allowed me to customize my learning experience,” she said. “I was able to try a little bit of everything from different disciplines, and that helped me gain a better perspective of the human services field and what it all entails.”

She wants to work in federal law enforcement, but isn’t ruling out the possibility of pursuing a master’s degree and becoming a mental health counselor later in life.The behavioral and mental health minor is beneficial for both careers.“I just think it’s a really unique opportunity to take different classes that are geared toward your own specific interests,” Soto-Stopak said. “You really can’t go wrong with it.”
