GREG A. PELSTER, 70 of Elsie, NE, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023 at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala with Fr Bryan Ernest as Celebrant. Interment will be in the Elsie Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 2 pm until 5 pm, at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant. Rosary and wake service will be at 7 pm at St. Luke's Catholic Church on Wednesday.

Ruth S. Payton, 83, of Big Springs, NE died on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

She was born January 20, 1940, in Lewellen, NE to Clinton Thomas and Ruth Hope (West) Reeves. Ruth attended school in Lewellen, NE where she graduated in 1957, as Salutatorian of her class.

Ruth married Paul “LeRoy” Payton on January 19, 1957, in Julesburg, CO. Ruth and LeRoy made their home in Lewellen, NE. They also lived in Missouri and Arkansas. LeRoy passed away due to an accident in Danville, AR in 1983. After that, she lived in Lamar, AR, and then settled in Big Springs, NE.

Ruth is survived by two sons, Paul (Cheryl) Payton of Big Springs, NE, and Perry (Yvonne) Payton of London, AR; two Daughters, Sandra Richards of Tyler, TX, and Brenda Esquada of Fort Smith, AR. Sisters, Sally (Steve) Peet of Omaha, Ne; Sue (John) Wilson of Beaver Dam, KY; Brother, Steve (Barb) Reeves of Falls of Rough, KY; Sister-in-law, Grace Eva Reeves of Shelton, NE. 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, LeRoy, and six brothers: Clinton, Thomas, Theron, Gary, Jim, and Mike. Sisters: Jackie Alexander, and Linda Blake, Infant sister Lana Kay, and a grandson, Michael Bowers.

Cremation has been chosen. A family burial will take place at a later date at the Appleton Cemetery in Appleton, AR.

Ruth S. Payton (1940-2023)

Rigoberto Rodriguez Sanchez of Cozad passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha at the age of 64. Rigoberto was born March 30, 1959 to in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, México to Manuel Rodriguez Del Rio and Maria Ema Sanchez. He married Lourdes Lorena Solis de Rodriguez on May 28, 1983. Their union was blessed with two daughters: Emma and Rosa. Rigoberto and Lorena also raised their niece and nephew, Maria Arcelia Rodriguez Ibarra and Manuel Rodriguez Ibarra. They lived in California before moving to Albion, Nebraska in 1996. The family moved to Cozad in July of 1997. Rigoberto was a soccer fanatic, his favorite team was El America. He enjoyed cooking and BBQ. He was a strong, simple man, and had a fierce love for his family. Rigoberto was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Samuel Rodriguez Sanchez, Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez and Maria Arcelia Rodriguez Sanchez. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Lourdes Lorena Solis de Rodriguez; daughters, Emma (Alfredo) Cruz and Rosa Rodriguez (Carlos Rodriguez); grandchildren, Kevin Cruz, Aysha Cruz; nephew and niece, Manuel Rodriguez Ibarra and Maria Arcelia Rodriguez Ibarra.

Rigoberto Rodriguez Sanchez (1959-2023)

Shirley JoAnne (Fraass) Bondegard, also known as Shirl, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2023, at the age of 78, in Holdrege, Nebraska. Born on May 12, 1945, in Sidney, Nebraska, she was the beloved daughter of Don and Niccy Fraass. She was a lifelong resident of LodgePole, Nebraska.

Shirley was a very independent woman who found success in everything she pursued. Whether it was cooking, dancing, gardening, or working, she excelled in all areas. She had a natural ability to connect with people and was especially caring towards her family, particularly those who were facing health issues.

Shirley received her primary education at LodgePole Grade School and graduated from LodgePole High School as Valedictorian. She went on to have a fulfilling career, working as a bartender at Linger Longer and Elks Lodge, secretary/assistant sales at Ohio National Life Insurance, bookkeeper/sales at both Cabela’s Furniture Store and Dick's Flooring, and she also dedicated 36 years to helping at the family-owned drugstore, Fraass’ Drug Sundries.

Shirley was a member of LodgePole Methodist Church.&nbsp; In her free time, Shirley enjoyed various hobbies, including gardening, golfing, cooking, dancing, and spending time with her family.

Per her wishes, Shirley requested no funeral service. She has been cremated, and her family will hold a celebration of life at her gravesite at a later date.

Shirley will be deeply missed by her loving family. She is survived by her children, Shebi Methe and her husband Greg Methe, Joshua Bondegard and his partner Dana Saner, and Bart Bondegard. &nbsp;She is also survived by her sister, Kathy (Kate) Markel and her sons Travis and Kelley Markel and families, her grandsons Blaise Methe and Grady Bondegard, her granddaughter Jagger Methe, RaNae Calder mother of Grady, In-laws: Burt Bondegard, Roxie and Ron Bartling, Pat and Dick Luckey, Richard Misegadis, Jim and Sandy Bondegard, Charles and Cindy Bondegard, Nancy and Preston Richards, as well as her cousins and numerous extended family members.

Shirley's son, Casey Donald Bondegard age 14 months, and her parents, Don and Nicola Fraass, preceded her in death, along with her sisters-in-law, Karen Nicholson, Debbie Misegadis and Darlene Bondegard and brothers-in-law Mike Markel and Doug Nicholson, Father and Mother-in-law Lloyd and Ameila Bondegard.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Shirley's memory to the American Cancer Society or The Arc of Buffalo County in Kearney, Nebraska, an organization dedicated to helping children and adults with developmental disabilities.&nbsp; The family would like to acknowledge Karen Miller, Preston and Nancy Richards who were her/our guardian angels when Shirl could no longer go out and about on her own. Also her numerous LodgePole friends and neighbors who watched out for her safety and never hesitated to step up when she reached out.&nbsp; Along with special thanks to the healthcare she received at North Platte Regional Hospital and the extraordinary care and compassion she received by all staff at Christian Homes in Holdrege, Nebraska in her final days.

Shirley Bondegard (1945-2023)

Renae Frances Chelewski, 86, of Hershey, passed away July 28, 2023 at Great Plains Health. &nbsp;She was born October 10, 1936 to Clarence and Helen (Spotanski) Sekutera in Loup City, NE.

Renae attended school in Loup City and Ravenna. &nbsp;She worked in several café’s waiting tables for 13 years. &nbsp;In 1961, Renae married Delmar Sands in Waco, TX and to this union, two daughters were born, Debra Ann and Malinda “Lyn”. &nbsp;The family moved to Texas while Delmar was in the military. &nbsp;They lived in Germany until 1966 and then returned to Fort Sheridan in Illinois. &nbsp;Renae worked as assistant manager at Woolworth in Illinois. &nbsp;She moved back to Loup City in 1969.

Renae married Jerome Chelewski and to this union, a daughter Jacquelyn Renae was born. &nbsp;Renae owned a daycare and was a bartender at American Legion Club. &nbsp;She moved to North Platte in 1982 and worked at Elk’s Club and North Platte Public Schools. &nbsp;She then moved to Maxwell where she worked at Flock Inn and Maxwell Schools. &nbsp;Renae moved back to North Platte in 2003, then to Hershey where she worked with Agency on Aging. &nbsp;

Renae will be remembered as a very hard working, devoted mother. &nbsp;She enjoyed traveling with Polka bands in her earlier days.

Survivors include daughters, Debra (Dave Klinginsmith) Smith of St. Paul, Lyn (Doug) Morrow of Hershey, Jacquelyn “Jackee” (Brad) Fear of Fullerton; grandchildren, Dana (Kimberly) Smith of Fullerton, Jeremy Smith of Fullerton, Amber Smith of Palmer, Natasha Smith of Farwell, Cheri (Jeremy) Bruinsma of Greeley, CO, Douglas W. Renae Frances Chelewski (1936-2023)

Doris W. Griffith, 100, of Tryon, passed away July 26, 2023 at Linden Court. &nbsp;She was born November 20, 1922 in a sod house south of Whitman to Sam and Minnie (Bassett) Musser. &nbsp;She was delivered by her father in a blizzard.

Doris graduated from Mullen High School with the class of 1939 when she was 16 years old. &nbsp;She married Hank Hallsted on October 5, 1942 in Alliance. &nbsp;Hank enlisted in the service and she followed him to Oregon. &nbsp;Doris returned to the family ranch when Hank was sent overseas. &nbsp;After Hank returned, they worked on several ranches before returning to the home place. &nbsp;Hank passed in 1970 and Doris continued to ranch with her son Kevin for the next 8 years.

Doris married William Griffith in 1979. &nbsp;They ranched together until 2010 when Bill passed. &nbsp;Doris continued to ranch on her home place until her health wouldn’t allow it anymore.

Doris was very talented at playing the mandolin and could play by ear. &nbsp;She had a love for the sandhills. &nbsp;She enjoyed trout fishing and hunting for arrowheads. &nbsp;Doris was and excellent wife and mother, always waiting for her children after school with fresh baked food. &nbsp;She was an excellent cook and family remembers her big breakfasts. &nbsp;She had big gardens, raised chickens, and canned meat.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia Ekberg of Araphoe, Linda (Leon) Penny of Tryon; grandchildren, John (Gina) Ekberg of Cambridge, Melissa (John) Murante of Omaha; great grandchildren, Natalia Murante, Hayden (Michele) Ekberg; great great grandchildren, Nyx, Abram, and Axel Ekberg; numerous other family members and friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Minnie; husbands, Hank and Bill; son, Kevin; grandchildren, Samantha and Levi; sisters, Helen, Elsie, and Georgia; brothers, Sammy and Don.

Griffith, 100, of Tryon, passed away July 26, 2023 at Linden Court. &nbsp;She was born November 20, 1922 in a sod house south of Whitman to Sam and Minnie (Bassett) Musser. &nbsp;She was delivered by her father in a blizzard.Doris graduated from Mullen High School with the class of 1939 when she was 16 years old. &nbsp;She married Hank Hallsted on October 5, 1942 in Alliance. &nbsp;Hank enlisted in the service and she followed him to Oregon. &nbsp;Doris returned to the family ranch when Hank was sent overseas. &nbsp;After Hank returned, they worked on several ranches before returning to the home place. &nbsp;Hank passed in 1970 and Doris continued to ranch with her son Kevin for the next 8 years.Doris married William Griffith in 1979. &nbsp;They ranched together until 2010 when Bill passed. &nbsp;Doris continued to ranch on her home place until her health wouldn’t allow it anymore.Doris was very talented at playing the mandolin and could play by ear. &nbsp;She had a love for the sandhills. &nbsp;She enjoyed trout fishing and hunting for arrowheads. &nbsp;Doris was and excellent wife and mother, always waiting for her children after school with fresh baked food. &nbsp;She was an excellent cook and family remembers her big breakfasts. &nbsp;She had big gardens, raised chickens, and canned meat.Survivors include daughters, Patricia Ekberg of Araphoe, Linda (Leon) Penny of Tryon; grandchildren, John (Gina) Ekberg of Cambridge, Melissa (John) Murante of Omaha; great grandchildren, Natalia Murante, Hayden (Michele) Ekberg; great great grandchildren, Nyx, Abram, and Axel Ekberg; numerous other family members and friends.Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Minnie; husbands, Hank and Bill; son, Kevin; grandchildren, Samantha and Levi; sisters, Helen, Elsie, and Georgia; brothers, Sammy and Don.Memorials are suggested in Doris’ memory and online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com.Services will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, July 31, 2023 at Eclipse Church with Pastor John Parsons officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow at Eclipse Cemetery. &nbsp;Adams &amp; Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Doris W. Griffith (1922-2023)

On July 25, 2023, Wayne Milton Pressnall, died at Great Plains Health, at the age of 88. &nbsp;He was born in Odell, Nebraska, in 1934, to William Milton and Greta Rose (Crandall) Pressnall. &nbsp;

Wayne spent his adolescent years in Wymore, Nebraska, graduating with the class of 1952. &nbsp;Following high school, he pursued an education in teaching at Peru State College, finishing in 1959 with an undergraduate degree. &nbsp;Upon graduating Peru, Wayne set out to Yellowstone National Park for an adventure when he met Gloria Epps, whom was also visiting the park. &nbsp;The two spent the entire summer together, hiking, square-dancing, seeing movies, and enjoying each other’s company. &nbsp;Wayne and Gloria immediately bonded over their love for the outdoors. &nbsp;On August 17, 1959, just before summer would come to an end for the pair, the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake occurred, giving the couple an incredibly unique story that connected them deeper. &nbsp;Shortly after the event, Gloria went back home to Texas and Wayne to Nebraska. &nbsp;He visited Gloria for the holidays and wrote a letter to her every day of the year until they were wed on June 4, 1960, in Dallas, Texas. &nbsp;

In 1961, the couple was living in Hudson, Wisconsin, when their first child, a daughter, Gretchen, was born. &nbsp;A second child, a son, William, was born in 1963, in Philadelphia, at the University of Teaching. &nbsp;They spent their lives traveling all over the country, spending each summer in a different state, attending summer schools and teaching. &nbsp;Ultimately, Wayne received his Master’s in physics at the University of Pennsylvania. &nbsp;He had the capabilities to teach any subject but focused on science, math, and computers. &nbsp;Wayne taught at several locations around the country until the couple made their forever home in North Platte, Nebraska, where he taught physical science, physics, and computers at North Platte High School for 26 years until his retirement in 1995.

Wayne seemed to be busier in his retirement than in his working years with the large number of passions he had including chess, theater, traveling, music, sports, and computers. &nbsp;When he decided he was interested in something, he was “all in”. &nbsp;Wayne won various chess tournaments and awards for his game play that included a win at the Nebraska State Championship in 1995 and winning postal master in postal chess. &nbsp;He was also responsible for orchestrating chess tournaments at the Nebraskland Days festivities for several years.

Theater was another activity that Wayne was heavily involved in within the community and throughout his childhood years. &nbsp;He was a child actor, performed in high school plays, and won an award for dramatic speaking in 1952 for his character as the grandfather in the play “You Can’t Take It with You”. &nbsp;Wayne held a strong presence in the North Platte Community Playhouse, directing and performing, and was on the Community Playhouse board for many years. &nbsp;He designed the lights at the new location and when he was not directing or performing, you could often find him running the lights for plays.

Wayne had a love for classical music; he and Gloria frequented several operas. &nbsp;They enjoyed traveling all over the country together, Wayne even converted his van into sleeping quarters for road trips. &nbsp;They went on many cruises together and traveled to all the family reunions. &nbsp;He was a sports fanatic, watching everything from Nebraska football to women’s basketball. &nbsp;The Kansas City Royals are who he rooted for the loudest. &nbsp;Wayne could also do just about anything when it came to computers. &nbsp;He figured out how to “hack” before “hacking” was a thing; he took apart floppy discs to decode them in order to make copies. &nbsp;Wayne lived life on his own terms and lived a life full of love and adventure.

Those that remain to remember Wayne are his wife, Gloria Pressnall, of North Platte; his children, Getchen (Dan) Miller, of Phoenix, AZ, Will (Lori Olson) Pressnall, of Raton, NM; grandchildren, Phillip Miller, Sam Miller, both of Phoenix, AZ, Wesley Pressnall, Adrienne (Zach) Zancana, all of Raton, NM; siblings, John (Gloria) Bernadt, of Hebron, NE, Greta (Ron) Iles, Delinda, IA, Lucille Taylor, of Beatrice; several cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family.

Preceding Wayne in death is his parents, William and Greta; brothers, Leslie White and Lonn Pressnall; sister, Merna Pressnall.

Per the wishes of Wayne, cremation has been chosen and no services will take place. &nbsp;

Joanne Rice, age 91, of Broken Bow, NE, educator, horsewoman, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother died on Monday, July 17, 2023. She was born on October 31, 1931, in Delta, Colorado to Lee Allen and Ethel Lenore (Wigram) Smock. &nbsp;She graduated from Delta High School in 1949 and attended Colorado State University (CSU). &nbsp;While at CSU, she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. &nbsp;She was also a “College Days” rodeo queen and rode in a mounted group that did square dancing via horseback and performed at the Denver Stock Show. &nbsp;She was a member of CSU’s a cappella choir and went on two tours. &nbsp;

On September 10, 1952, she married Duane N. Rice who was in the CSU school of veterinary medicine. &nbsp;She worked in the CSU alumni office while Duane completed his degree in veterinary medicine. &nbsp;She fondly referred to this as “putting husband through college”. &nbsp;Upon completion of his degree in veterinary medicine in 1954, the couple moved to Broken Bow, Nebraska where he practiced vet medicine at Grassland Hospital, and they started a family.&nbsp;

While in Broken Bow, Joanne was a dedicated member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, became an Altar Guild Directress and was President of Church Women United. &nbsp;She was also a dedicated member of P.E.O., a 4-H Leader for 10 years and a member of the Nebraska Veterinary Association Auxiliary where she served as Secretary-Treasurer. &nbsp;She was a treasured member of the community, tirelessly staying actively involved in many civic and social events, while keeping ahead of her kids’ busy schedules and helping to keep the veterinary clinic operating smoothly. &nbsp;

In 1979, Joanne and Duane moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where they both worked at the University of Nebraska, Duane, as an extension veterinarian and Joanne as a clerical assistant. &nbsp;While in Lincoln, Joanne continued her dedication to philanthropic service with the DM Chapter of P.E.O. and with the University Women’s Club. &nbsp;

In 2002 Duane and Joanne returned to their familiar home in Broken Bow where they re-engaged in the community, with old friends and continued to pursue their personal interests. Joanne’s lifelong love of horses continued up until just before her death where she could gaze out into the pasture by her home and see her beloved horses. &nbsp;Joanne was an avid fan of all University of Nebraska sports, especially football and volleyball. &nbsp;She loved her ‘Huskers’ and attended almost all of Nebraska’s home football games over a 60- year period. She also loved bowling and participating in a weekly bridge club for decades with her beloved friends. &nbsp;

Joanne is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Sandra &amp; Dale Hansen, Lincoln; daughter, Joelene Aschenbrenner, Seward; sons and daughter-in-laws, Ken Rice and Dr. Sarah Goodpastor, Durango, Colo.; Dr. Russ &amp; Lisa Rice, Broken Bow; and ex-daughter-in-law, Dr. Teresa Duryea, Bellaire, Texas; 19 grandchildren and grandchildren in-law, Dr. Jennifer (Hansen) Flum and Dr. Drew Flum, Ashley (Hansen) Green and Peter Green, Dr. Sarah (Hansen) Haag and Dr. Aaron Haag; Adam Aschenbrenner; Nicole (Rice) Garmezy and Adam Garmezy, Kirsten Rice and Anthony Green, Alex Rice, Erin Rice, Benjamin Rice and Elenore Rice; Chelsea Rice, Travis Rice, Emmalea Rice and fiancé, Sean McMullen; 7 great grandchildren, Benjamin, Tommy, Owen and Emmett Flum; Theo and Clark Green; and Bodie Haag; Sister in-law Harriet Smock. &nbsp;Joanne was preceded in death by husband, Duane Rice; parents, Lee and Ethel Smock; sister, Jean Parish, brother in-law Mel Parish; and brother Lionel (Bud) Smock.&nbsp;

Joanne Rice (1931-2023)

Phillip Eugene Hiatt, age 78, of Waveland, MS, passed away on July 24, 2023, in Waveland, Mississippi.

Phil was born March 22, 1945, to parents Oscar Wayne and Ruby Helen (Renneker) Hiatt in Cambridge, NE. He graduated from Cambridge High School with the class of 1963. He went on to attend McCook Community College and the University of Nebraska Lincoln, achieving his bachelor’s degree. Phil worked in Safety and Loss Control throughout his life, but his favorite job was a summer spent as a cook at the park ranger’s lodge in Yellowstone National Park.

Phillip proudly served his country by joining the army in November 1968. He fought in the Vietnam War as a UH-1 Huey Helicopter Pilot in the 195 the AHC from 1968 until 1969. He was discharged from active duty in April 1971.

Phil married Mary Jane Martinez in 1971, and from their marriage, they were blessed with their daughter, Gina Lynn (Hiatt) Ladner. Phil and Mary Jane divorced but remained good friends throughout his life.

Phil enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time and in retirement. He especially enjoyed pheasant season in Nebraska, deer season in South Texas, and fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Phil loved to travel and took road trips whenever he got the chance. He traveled throughout the western United States and explored all its beautiful sights and National Parks. Phil also enjoyed history and reading. Phil was a member of the Masonic Lodge in San Antonio, TX and was a resident of San Antonio from the early 1970’s until 2018 when he moved to Mississippi to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Steven Ladner; infant sister, Bonita Sue Hiatt; sisters Verona Ann Heinz (Elmer) and Lavana Louise “Poodge” Chrislip (Clayton); brothers, Leon Ray “Red” Hiatt (Betty) and Wayne “Dutch” Hiatt (Connie); and nephew Robert “Bob” Heinz.

Those left to celebrate Phil’s life are his daughter Gina Hiatt Ladner and grandchildren, Noah Phillip and Natalie Audrie Ladner, all of Waveland, MS; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Phil was a humble man who was liked by all and will be sorely missed by his family and all who came to know him.

Phillip Eugene Hiatt (1945-2023)

Robert F. Keiser, 86, of Gothenburg, NE, passed away July 25, 2023 at Meadowlark Pointe in Cozad, NE.

He was born September 12, 1936 to Edwin and Gladys (Duis) Keiser in Gothenburg, NE. Robert graduated with the class of 1954.

Robert started at the young age of 17 driving a truck for Harry Wilson. He got the bug of driving and drove for Harry, James O Block, and he eventually drove with his brother Willard, buying out Harry Wilson, and combined the trucking and farming. He bought a second truck from Milford Lammers. He enjoyed trucking so much. After semi-retiring he helped out local farmers during harvest by hauling grain.&nbsp;

Robert married Elaine Martin on July 17,1960 and to this union three children were born, Jeff, Tim, Angie.

They loved family get togethers, going south for the winter and doing lots of camping in the summer. Robert will be missed by family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Elaine of Gothenburg, NE; son, Jeff (Tracey) Keiser, and their children, Jessica (Marion) Rotz and their boys, Lukas and Linkon Rotz, Johanna Keiser. Tim (Shanna) Keiser, and their children Jayde (Beau) Johnson and their children Riggs, Maggie, and Jed Johnson, TJ (Timilynn) Keiser and their children Rachel and baby "K" due in August. Daughter, Angie (Ron) Mannel and their children Shelby (Tyson) Miller and their children, Frankie and Nellie Miller, Kati Mannel and William Mannel. Brother, Willard (Laura) Keiser, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel 620 10th St, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Thursday, July 27, 2023, 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm, with family present from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

Services will be held at American Lutheran Church, Friday, July 28, 2023 at 2:00 pm with Doug Hjelmstad Officiating. &nbsp;

Interment will follow in the American Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the family for later designation.

Steve Kaps, age 65, of Arcadia, NE passed away July 21, 2023, at the Jennie M Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at 10:30 am at St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Loup City, NE with Father Richard Pointkowski officiating. Burial will be in the North Lee Park Catholic Cemetery near Arcadia, NE at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Arcadia Fire Board or Arcadia Sons of the American Legion. Stephen Wayne Kaps was born August 14, 1957, in Broken Bow, NE to Wayne “Pete” A. and Rose G (Fagot) Kaps. Steve graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1975. After graduating he attended UNL, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture.

Steve married Wilma Jepson on July 7, 1984, in Broken Bow. The couple made their home near Arcadia where they still farm today. Steve enjoyed family time especially with his kids and grandchildren and his family at Lake Mc McConaughy, fishing, and farming. Stephen served on the Parish Council, Sons of the American Legion, Arcadia Fire Board, Arcadia Public School Huskie Foundation and Arcadia Safety and Preservation Fund, Board (A.S.A.P).

Steve is survived by wife Wilma of Arcadia, son Tyler (Melissa) Kaps of Ord, daughter Krista (Shane) Scott of Broken Bow, three grandchildren Shelton Scott, Hadley Scott, and Brogan Scott, father Wayne “Pete” Kaps of Kearney, sisters Connie (Mike) Mohatt of Omaha, Carol (Gary) Masek of Valparaiso, Cheryl (Rick) Kaelin of O’Fallon, MO, and Kay (Ed) Mayer of Plano, TX, sister-in-law Wanda (Mitch) Carrier of Onawa, IA, brothers-in-law Waran (Pam) Jepson of Greeley, Co, and Wayne Jepson of Moorhead, IA, and many nieces, and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother Rose, sister and brother-in-law Karen (Terry) Connick, mother and father-in-law Allan and Doris Jepson.&nbsp;

Maria Paola Herrera, 73, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at Lexington Regional Health Center surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on January 26, 1950, in Usulután, El Salvador to Teodoso Montana and Rosa Herrera. In 1989, Maria moved from El Salvador to California before moving to Nebraska in 1992. On March 8, 2004, Maria was united in marriage to Rolando Luna in Lexington, Nebraska.

Maria was a strong-willed woman with a heart of gold. She was incredibly hardworking and always made sure she could provide for her family. She loved helping whenever she could. She would often help raise funds for families in need. When her children were younger, she would bring them and all their friends’ gifts or candy to bring them some joy, which they still remember to this day. Maria loved to cook and always made sure to feed her friends as well as the community. She made sure to never forget anyone. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend and will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, Rolando Luna of Lexington; sons, Rudy Herrera of Houston, Texas, Edwin Alvarez Herrera of Los Angeles, California, Jorge Alan Herrera of Houston, Texas; daughter, Rosa Ramirez Herrera of Guatemala, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.

Maria Paola Herrera (1950-2023)

On July 18, 2023, Vivian Irene Licking passed away at Wauneta Care and Therapy Center, after an extensive battle with cancer. &nbsp;She was born Vivian Irene Bierma on November 14, 1947, to Lawrence and Audrey (Moore) Bierma, at the Sutherland Hospital after which she spent a few days at her maternal grandparents’ home in Sutherland. She then joined her mother and father on the Three Mile Ranch in Arthur County. Vivian was just shy of a year old when she survived the blizzard of 1949; several nights spent wrapped in quilts, sleeping between her parents. &nbsp;In 1951, her father accepted a management position of the iconic Whitewater Ranch. &nbsp;Shortly after, Vivian was joined by a brother, David Lawrence, in July of 1951. &nbsp;She started school at four years old with only one other classmate in a one room schoolhouse. &nbsp;Later on, Vivian attended McPherson County High School, graduating in the class of 1965. &nbsp;She met Charles Bellew in high school and they wed in 1966. &nbsp;Two boys were born to this union, Charles Lawrence “C.L.” and Shawn David. &nbsp;After divorcing, Vivian married Norman Dale Licking in 1982 and a son was welcomed from this union in 1985, Beau Curtis.

After growing up on the Whitewater Ranch, Vivian became a ranch girl; she could rake hay, ride a horse, or fix a fence; Vivian spent her entire life in the Sandhills. &nbsp;Vivian was a dedicated woman; she held a variety of jobs throughout her life. &nbsp;For over 30 years, she was an EMT for McPherson County. &nbsp;She also worked as the McPherson County Clerk, and for some years, as the bookkeeper for Kunkel Auto Supply. &nbsp;Vivian also worked with the Cabela Company and was a mail carrier for various routes for many years. &nbsp;She and her husband, Dale, operated her dad’s windmill business for several years after his death in 1999. &nbsp;She was strong in her Faith and was a member of the Ringgold Free Methodist Church. &nbsp;She loved making ceramics and spending time following her mother’s passion in that field.

Those left to cherish the memory of Vivian include her sons, C.L. (Amy) Bellew, of Hershey, Shawn Bellew, of Tryon, Beau Licking, of Wauneta; grandchildren, Kyle Joseph (Amanda) Bellew, Audrey Ann (Kyle) Kingston, Shawn David Bellew II, Terry Layne Bellew; great grandchildren, Peyton and Tripp Sargent, and Arnold Kingston; brothers, David (Barbara) Bierma, and Dale (Marietta) Bierma; siblings-in-law, Mary “Sis” (Earl) Feyerherm, Don (Linda) Licking, Dennis (Karen) Licking, Richard (Tanna) Licking, Barbara (Dave) Praeuner; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Audrey (1985) and Lawrence (1999); her husband, Dale (2020); grandson, Dowe (2016).

Dennis was born to Cliff and Carol (Klooz) Schoup on July 9, 1962 in McCook, Nebraska.&nbsp; Dennis attended school in McCook graduating from high school in 1981. &nbsp;He went on to college, graduating from both McCook Community College and University of Nebraska at Lincoln, studying wildlife management.

&nbsp; &nbsp; His job experiences led him to work for the Carlson Brothers on the farm. &nbsp;Dennis worked as a tire specialist for Wheelers for many years. &nbsp;The job Dennis really wanted and was employed with, for almost 25 years, was the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad out of Alliance, Neb. Dennis loved to watch sports and played some, when he was younger. &nbsp;He was also a history buff, and finally got one in the family that enjoyed it as much as he did, in his younger nephew, Aaron. &nbsp;Dennis enjoyed old movies that he could watch on TCM. Dennis was raised in the Lutheran Church.

Floyd Edward Martin Sr, 88, of Oconto, Nebraska, passed away on June 25, 2023, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

He was born on November 6, 1934, in rural Custer County near Oconto, Nebraska to Leo and Tillie (Mason) Martin. He farmed south of Kearney and had numerous other jobs in the area. He ran the Martin Gulf Service Cycle and Auto Shop in Kearney. In later years, he operated a small engine repair service in Oconto.

He leaves to mourn his siblings, Dale, Lillian, and Joyce; children, Chuck, Randy, Karen, Angela, Billy, Nancy, Ronald, Michel, Thomas, and Pearl; ex-wife, Angela; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Marlon; sister, Martha; son, Floyd Jr.; and wives, Peggy, and Maxine.

A Graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kim Smith, officiating.

Carla Adare Winters of McCook, NE passed away at her home in McCook on July 18, 2023, at the age of 75.

Carla was born in McCook on February 19, 1948, to parents Adair and Maxine (Davidson) Myers. She graduated from McCook High School on May 24, 1966. Two weeks after her graduation, Carla was united in marriage to Richard Winters in Indianola, NE on June 11, 1966. Together, Carla and Richard raised their sons, Shawn and Stacy, in McCook, NE.

Carla was a homemaker throughout her life and had a deep love for all animals including the many dogs she and Richard had throughout the years. In recent years, she enjoyed watching and providing nicknames to her neighbor’s llamas and ponies.

She is preceded by parents, husband, and sister, Cathy Heskett.

Maureen Olofson, 95, of Ogallala, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2023, at the Perkins County Hospital in Grant.

Maureen was born May 27, 1928, at Bishop's Stortford, England, to Ernest Alfred and Dorothy Redall (Watson) Pavitt. She received her education in England, where she attended a private school owned by the Bishop of London. Maureen was a survivor of the WWII bombings of London in the early 1940s.

Maureen would meet and marry Darrell Olofson, whose military service during WWII had brought him to London. In 1952, Maureen moved from Hertfordshire, and the couple made their home on a ranch south of Arnold, Nebraska.

Moving from Central-North London to a house in the Nebraska Sandhills with no running water was a formidable adjustment for Maureen, but she came to appreciate the unique beauty of her life. Maureen and Darrell were blessed with four children. Most recently, Maureen had been making her home in Ogallala to be closer to family.

Maureen was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Darrell.

Survivors include her daughter, Julie (Ted) Young of North Platte; sons, Steve (Iris) Olofson of Ogallala, Michael (Natividad) Olofson, Brent (Kim) Olofson of Colorado Springs, CO; sister, Val Atkins; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; beloved dog Bo, along with many other relatives and friends.

Laura F. “Freddie” Tickle, 80, of Cozad, Nebraska, passed away on July 19, 2023 at Cozad Community Hospital.&nbsp;

Freddie was born on October 31, 1942, to Fred and Hazel (Fye) Knotwell in Grant, Nebraska. Freddie attended Grant schools, graduating in 1960. She furthered her education at Kearney State College before marrying her high school sweetheart, Jerry Tickle, in 1961. Their union was blessed with two sons: Troy and Trevor.

Freddie worked tirelessly alongside Jerry, providing funeral service to families in need over the many years. She was a gentle and caring presence, an unshakable wife and supporter to Jerry, and a truly caring friend.

Freddie was involved with Boy Scouts as a Den Mother, a Sunday School teacher, and a homeroom mother. She was a faithful member of the Methodist church. Freddie loved playing golf, skiing in Colorado, and playing bridge. She especially enjoyed her annual golf trips for three days with her two sisters and two nieces, calling themselves the Knotwell Special.&nbsp;

Freddie Tickle was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family and the community. Her kindness, warmth, and love for others will always be remembered. &nbsp;

Freddie lived her life with great love and compassion for those around her. She experienced the whole bevy of what life can bring, from great joys to the sorrow of losing her loved ones. Her life begins anew with the great hope that what she once lost has been found. Freddie's faith has become sight. Rest in peace, Freddie.

Jamie L. Apolius, 31, of Ogallala, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Ogallala on July 18, 2023.

Jamie was born on February 3, 1992, in Grant, Nebraska, to Donald and Shiela (Dunn) Apolius. He completed his education at Ogallala High School, graduating with the class of 2011.

At the age of 14, Jamie participated in a school-work program that led him to join the team at Bomgaars. From then on, he became an integral part of the Bomgaars family, bringing joy and laughter to all those he encountered, whether fellow employees or customers. With his mischievous smirk and playful nature, Jamie had a remarkable ability to brighten any environment he entered.

Jamie had a deep passion for farming and cattle. He found solace and happiness in spending time outdoors and being surrounded by his family. His infectious energy and kind-heartedness made him a joy to be around, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Jamie was preceded in death by his father, Don Apolius, and several grandparents.

 </figure>Ronald Max Koester, 71, of North Platte, NE passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023 at Bryan Medical Center East in Lincoln, NE.Ron was born on October 5, 1951 in North Platte, NE and raised on the family farm near Wellfleet, NE. &nbsp;He was the son of Floyd and H. Maxine (VonGoetz) Koester.Ron attended North Platte High School until his senior year when he transferred to Maywood High School, graduating in 1969. &nbsp;It was during his high school years that he met his future wife, Sherie Fairchild. &nbsp;They were married in 1971 and together they had two daughters: Jennifer and Rebecca. &nbsp;Ron attended and graduated from the diesel mechanic program at Mid-Plains Community College and worked at various local car dealerships. &nbsp;He then was hired on at the Union Pacific Railroad as a mechanical foreman and travelled for several years before being stationed in the mechanical shop at North Platte. &nbsp;Ron loved helping his dad and always felt most at peace on the family farm and ranch near Wellfleet that had been in his family for generations. &nbsp;He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman. &nbsp;Those left to cherish Ron’s memory are his daughters, Jennifer Gilliland of Trenton, TN, and Rebecca Koester of Bells, TN; grandchildren, Daniel, O’Brian, and Justin Gilliland, Dalton Milam, and Gracelyn Watkins; sisters, Vicki (Rodney) Winder of North Platte, and Linda Smith of Lincoln; former spouse, Sherie Koester of Jackson, TN; children and grandchildren of Ron’s late companion Linda, Rob (Kristin) Flood, Jim (Jen) Flood and Cathy Kohler; their children, Dillon Whittier, Jacob, Kyle and Ryan Kohler and Taryn, Jaycee and Tenley Flood; as well as many nieces, nephews and many friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Maxine, companion, Linda Flood, and brother-in-law, Harold Smith.&nbsp;Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte with Pastor Ryan Alexander officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Wellfleet Cemetery. Visitation with the family receiving friends will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, July 23rd at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which has been entrusted with the arrangements.
