&nbsp; Lincoln, Neb. —&nbsp;Nebraska Extension is hosting two drone conferences on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and Thursday, Aug. 15 at West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte, Nebraska.

The two-day event begins with the 2nd Annual Drones in Agriculture Conference on Aug. 14 and concludes with the 2nd Nebraska Spray Drone Conference on Aug. 15. Each conference includes presenters and exhibitors from Nebraska and across the world, who are experts and practitioners in the drone industry.

Two exceptional speakers will present the keynote address at each conference.

The Drones in Agriculture Conference will feature Jonathan Rupprecht, Esq. of Rupprecht Law, P.A. Rupprecht is a lawyer, commercial pilot and flight instructor who combines these experiences to help businesses and individuals navigate the complex system of laws for unmanned aircraft systems.

The Nebraska Spray Drone Conference will feature Dr. Steve Li, associate professor and extension specialist of weed science at Auburn University. His research team works on evaluating the application efficiency of spray drones and understanding how to optimize flight and spray parameters to mitigate spray drift.

In addition to these speakers, the conferences will feature presenters from Federal Aviation Administration, Nebraska Department of Agriculture, Nebraska Extension, Pix4D Agriculture, Lifted Vision, Aurora Cooperative, Agri Spray Drones, and Volitant Technologies. Spray drone demonstrations will be provided by Agri Spray Drones and Volitant Technologies.

Lincoln County - Law enforcement responds to three vehicle accident near Hershey Thursday morning.&nbsp;

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), around 7:30am, deputies and EMS were dispatched to MM 165 on Highway 30 which is near Hershey. Reports came in that three vehicles were involved in a accident and injuries had occurred.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As law enforcement arrived on scene, Hershey EMS were removing the driver from a Ford pickup truck. The truck sustained heavy front-end damage, and the driver was trapped inside the truck according to officials.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Investigation shows that 23-year-old Hailey Falkena of North Platte was traveling westbound in her 2007 Trailblazer when she noticed a vehicle quickly approaching her from behind. Falkena was concerned the vehicle was going to hit her but the passing vehicle, a 2002 Jeep Liberty pulled out to pass her.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the press release from the LCSO, an eastbound 1993 Ford pickup truck being driven by 58-year-old Daniel Richardson of Sutherland was hit nearly head on. The Jeep skid into a ditch and rolled onto its top.

Officials say the Jeep was being driven by a 14-year-old with a school permit who was heading to band practice. The two vehicles that were involved in the collision veered into the path of Falkena's vehicle, causing damage to the front of the vehicle.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Falkena did not have any serious injuries from the incident. Richardson possibly had a broken leg and possibly a broken hip along with facial injuries. LCSO says the 14-year-old sustained a fractured neck from the accident. Highway 30 had to be closed for both eastbound and westbound traffic for an hour.&nbsp;

Also, Janet Oswald is the lucky winner of the two Husker Volleyball tickets plus $100, and Larry Steele is the winner of the two Husker Football tickets plus $100.

The beautiful pastel colored quilt was made by Barb Oltmanns, hand-quilted by the Flying Needles Quilt Group and bound by Kathy Lowe.

The raffle is one of RSVP’s annual fundraisers benefiting the program. The money raised is used to purchase books to be donated to each elementary student in the North Platte Public Schools District, McDaid and Our Redeemer.

Lincoln, Neb. - UNK broadcasting students took home some hardware from the 2024 Nebraska Broadcasting Association Awards convention on Wednesday. The students won awards in the College Student radio category. The students who won awards in the college category were North Platte native Kade Mohr, Jon Willis of Omaha and Alex Hammeke of Ellinwood, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - Grab the lawn chairs and gear up for the 10th Annual Music on the Bricks event which is taking place Friday and Saturday in the Canteen District. Friday event will run from 7:00pm - 10:00pm and will feature Bases Loaded. On Saturday, the event will start at 6:00pm and will last until midnight. Saturday's show features the James Burke Trio, tunes from Jim Calhoun, Barb and Brenda and finally Platinum Pearls will end the nights.&nbsp;

Admission is $7 per person and children 12 and under are free. However, if using a credit card, a $1 processing fee will be added so it will be $8. Reminder to bring a lawn chair as seating is very limited.&nbsp;

Nebraska Department of Transportation

Aug. 7, 2024 (North Platte, Neb.) — The west side of the B Street and Jeffers Street intersection will close Wednesday, Aug. 14, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

The west leg of the B Street and Jeffers Street intersection will be closed for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes during this time-period. The closure is expected to be in place for approximately three weeks. 

Paulsen, Inc of Cozad is the contractor for this project. The closure is for construction of new concrete pavement, including the B Street Intersection. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Imperial, Neb. - The City of Imperial will begin spraying mosquitos this evening and will continue the process throughout the fall as necessary. &nbsp;

The City of Imperial says the first round of spraying will begin tonight at 7:30 pm (MT) and will last until midnight. Spraying cannot be done on windy days, the calmer the day, the better chance of results.&nbsp;

The chemical used for spraying is used safely in Nebraska. Head indoors with kids and pets if you see or hear the sprayer approaching your area and stay indoors. Also keep all windows closed during the spraying process.&nbsp;

City of Imperial to begin spraying for mosquitos this evening

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Ramon Lopez-Larios, age 53, of San Ysidro, California, was sentenced August 6, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine and 100 grams or more of fentanyl and for being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Lopez-Larios to 168 months’ imprisonment.&nbsp; There is no parole in the federal system. After Lopez-Larios is released from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release. He will also forfeit $2,900.00 in U.S. currency to the United States as drug proceeds.

On August 18, 2022, Nebraska State Patrol conducted a traffic stop of a California vehicle on I-80 at mile marker 231.&nbsp; Law enforcement utilized a K-9, which indicated to the presence of narcotics.&nbsp; Law enforcement then searched the vehicle and located two statues.&nbsp; Law enforcement used a Viken Backscatter X-ray machine, and it showed concealed packages inside the statues.&nbsp; Troopers tested the packages, and they contained meth.&nbsp; Law enforcement seized 59 pounds of meth and 9 pounds of fentanyl from the vehicle.&nbsp; Upon further investigation, a firearm was located inside a bucket in the back of the vehicle.&nbsp; Law enforcement confirmed that Lopez-Larios is an illegal alien.&nbsp; In addition, $2,900.00 in U.S. currency was seized from Lopez-Larios’ pants pocket.

This case was investigated by&nbsp;the Nebraska State Patrol.

United States Attorney's OfficeUnited States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Ramon Lopez-Larios, age 53, of San Ysidro, California, was sentenced August 6, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine and 100 grams or more of fentanyl and for being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Lopez-Larios to 168 months’ imprisonment.&nbsp; There is no parole in the federal system. After Lopez-Larios is released from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release. He will also forfeit $2,900.00 in U.S. currency to the United States as drug proceeds.On August 18, 2022, Nebraska State Patrol conducted a traffic stop of a California vehicle on I-80 at mile marker 231.&nbsp; Law enforcement utilized a K-9, which indicated to the presence of narcotics.&nbsp; Law enforcement then searched the vehicle and located two statues.&nbsp; Law enforcement used a Viken Backscatter X-ray machine, and it showed concealed packages inside the statues.&nbsp; Troopers tested the packages, and they contained meth.&nbsp; Law enforcement seized 59 pounds of meth and 9 pounds of fentanyl from the vehicle.&nbsp; Upon further investigation, a firearm was located inside a bucket in the back of the vehicle.&nbsp; Law enforcement confirmed that Lopez-Larios is an illegal alien.&nbsp; In addition, $2,900.00 in U.S. currency was seized from Lopez-Larios’ pants pocket.This case was investigated by&nbsp;the Nebraska State Patrol.

August 7, 2024 (Lexington, Neb.) – Richard’s Electric of North Platte has been awarded a $2.3 million bid for the&nbsp;<a href="https://dawsonpower.com/2024/07/dawson-ppd-plans-substation-work/" target="_blank">upgrade of two rural Dawson Public Power District substations</a>. The award was approved at Dawson PPD’s regular board meeting on August 5, 2024. Cross Canyon Engineering designed the substations. The sealed bid process is required for projects exceeding $750,000, as outlined in the recently passed LB 969.

Once the 2024 irrigation season is complete, work will begin at Sub 26, located southwest of Gothenburg, and Sub 35, located northeast of Gothenburg. Construction is expected to start on October 1 and be complete by May 2, 2025.

The Sub 26 update will convert it from 34,500 volts to 69,000 volts. The change will increase the capacity, with up to three times more power on the existing lines between area substations. This improves efficiency and decreases operational costs. The rebuild will also modernize the design and provide options for future substation automation.

An increase in irrigation load has made upgrades at Sub 35 necessary. Over the last four years, there has been an almost 70% increase in power required at that substation. This is equivalent to adding 34, 100-horsepower irrigation wells. The loads have come from conversions to electric irrigation equipment upgrades and the re-activation of previously unused services.

 <li>On July 27 and 28, Dawson PPD experienced difficulties with its irrigation load management system. The District was Code Red on Saturday, July 27. Control ended as expected at 9:00 p.m., however later that evening a malfunction caused some load control units to start then release several additional times. Dawson PPD is in contact with the vendor to resolve the issue and apologizes for any issues it may have caused our customers.</li><li>In June 2024,&nbsp; $1.6 million net was added to plant.. So far this year, $5.99 million has been added to net plant value.</li><li>Board members received employment law training virtually by Chad Richter, a principal in the Omaha office of Jackson Lewis P.C.</li><li>A choking rescue device has been added to the Lexington office. LifeVac uses suction from the mouth of the choking victim to remove the obstruction.</li><li>General Manager Gwen Kautz updated the board on wholesale power contract negotiations with Nebraska Public Power District, an upcoming request for proposal for 20 megawatts of hydro from The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District, and a recent Environmental Protection Agency ruling which will financially impact NPPD.</li><li>In a closed session, the board reviewed the General Manager’s job description for public posting. Dawson PPD’s General Manager, Gwen Kautz, will retire at the end of 2024.</li>

Two rural Dawson Public Power District substations to receive an upgrade

&nbsp; WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, secured&nbsp;over $4 million&nbsp;for&nbsp;critical Nebraska safety priorities in the Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Commerce, Justice, and Science&nbsp;Appropriations&nbsp;(CJS) Act. All of Senator Fischer’s Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) project proposals to support Nebraska law enforcement and first responders received funding in the Senate’s FY25 CJS bill.

The bill, which must still be voted&nbsp;on&nbsp;by the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, was unanimously approved by the Appropriations Committee.&nbsp;

“Law enforcement and first responders are critical for our safety and wellbeing, especially during life-threatening emergencies. Securing this funding for five key projects to upgrade equipment and support front line personnel will enable these communities across the state to improve communications technologies, coordinate efforts to confront crime and drug trafficking, and continue to protect Nebraskans,”&nbsp;said Senator Fischer.

The Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Act funds critical law enforcement and emergency needs to keep our communities, law enforcement officers, and other first responders safe.

Great Plains Health Offers Accelerated Path to Nursing Career

(North Platte, Nebraska) - Musical Theater writers Johnny Rodgers and Sue (Fabisch) Errico set their sights on the historical, inspiring story of the North Platte Canteen with a large, full-scale, professional musical. The authors, who have successes around the world, first heard about it at Errico’s daughter’s college visit.

 “We were visiting Freed-Hardman University in Tennessee when the president of the school gave his sermon about the canteen. I had never heard of it before, so I put a reminder in my phone to research it more when I returned home”, Errico said. And research it she did. After reading every book, article and internet post, Errico says she was “flabbergasted” by this rich and heartwarming story. She called her co-writer Johnny Rodgers to suggest that they work on this together.&nbsp;

“Everything’s already there and we’re just ‘musical paleontologists’ dusting it off for the world to see”, says Rodgers. The duo is aiming for Broadway, but know that this is (at least) a 3-5 year process. “We just finished year number two”, says Errico. “But we had to have the first production right here in North Platte…where it all began.” A local cast &amp; crew of talented performers will bring the show to life in September and October as the 2024-2025 Season Premiere Production of the North Platte Community Playhouse. Sue Errico (North Platte, Nebraska) - Musical Theater writers Johnny Rodgers and Sue (Fabisch) Errico set their sights on the historical, inspiring story of the North Platte Canteen with a large, full-scale, professional musical. The authors, who have successes around the world, first heard about it at Errico’s daughter’s college visit. “We were visiting Freed-Hardman University in Tennessee when the president of the school gave his sermon about the canteen. I had never heard of it before, so I put a reminder in my phone to research it more when I returned home”, Errico said. And research it she did. After reading every book, article and internet post, Errico says she was “flabbergasted” by this rich and heartwarming story. She called her co-writer Johnny Rodgers to suggest that they work on this together.&nbsp;“Everything’s already there and we’re just ‘musical paleontologists’ dusting it off for the world to see”, says Rodgers. The duo is aiming for Broadway, but know that this is (at least) a 3-5 year process. “We just finished year number two”, says Errico. “But we had to have the first production right here in North Platte…where it all began.” A local cast &amp; crew of talented performers will bring the show to life in September and October as the 2024-2025 Season Premiere Production of the North Platte Community Playhouse.
