Wilma Mary Teresa (Otterstein) DeFord, 97, of Grant, Neb., passed away Saturday, July 31, 2021, at the Perkins County Hospital in Grant. Wilma was born February 3, 1924 at Plattsmouth, Neb., to Richard and Mary (Bulin) Otterstein. At the age of seven Wilma lost her mother to Tuberculosis. Her mother's death was very hard on her and her brothers. In her early 20s, Wilma supported the war effort by serving as a Rosie the Riveter and working in a munitions factory in Omaha during World War II. Wilma was always proud to be able to have served her country in this capacity. After the war, Wilma took a nanny job for a family friend in Madrid, bringing her to western Nebraska. It was during a dance in Ogallala, Neb., that she met Romaine DeFord. The two were married on June 17, 1946. Their union was blessed with three children, Janet, Alan, and Carl. Wilma helped to support her young family by working alongside her mother-in-law, Emma DeFord, in her game dressing business near Ogallala. It was a job that she greatly enjoyed. From greeting people who brought in their game, to the repetition of processing the birds, Wilma found satisfaction in the profession. With the passing of her mother-in-law, Wilma went to work at TRW/American Shizuki in Ogallala, where she retired after 25 years of service. She continued to live in Ogallala for several years after her retirement, but then moved to Sunset Haven in Grant to be closer to her daughter. In 2015, she became a resident of Park Ridge Assisted Living in Grant until the time of her death. Wilma will be remembered for the tremendous impression she had on everyone she met. Through her humble, soft-spoken manner and quick wit, those who got to know Wilma could not help but smile, laugh, and leave her side with love in their heart. Although she struggled with macular-degeneration and back problems later in life, and in the end heart problems, she was sharp as a tack up until the last moments. Wilma's mind never failed her. For her family and friends it was especially joyous to hear Wilma recall so many memories from her 97 years on this earth. Wilma was a fiercely devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her door was always open to her grands and great-grands, and she was always ready with the toys on the shelf, cartoons on the TV, her special mashed potatoes and gravy, or a can of Spaghetti-O's in the cupboard for when anyone dropped by. She never forgot a birthday or holiday, and her Rosary beads were worn thin from the many, many prayers sent Heavenward for those she loved. In her younger years, Wilma loved to go to garage sales and find treasures of all kinds. She would then turn around and wheel-and-deal with her friends for things that they might have found at another sale that day or something else they wanted to barter. Wilma also loved to dance when she was younger, and to watch Judge Judy and to listen to Mother Angelica on EWTN later in life. Most of all, Wilma loved Jesus and was devoted to her Catholic faith. Wilma will be greatly missed by her family and friends who loved her. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dick, Don, and Gerald Otterstein; son-in-law, Dean Lagler; and granddaughter, Lori Lagler. Survivors include her three children, daughter Janet Lagler of Grant, Neb., son Alan (Mary) DeFord of Herriman, Utah, and son Carl (Ida) DeFord of Blue Hill, Neb.&nbsp; Eight Grandchildren: Mark (ReBecca) Lagler of Grant, Neb., Becky (Aaron) Uehling of Grant, Neb., Katie Arndt of Cozad, Neb., Heather (Matt) Rice of Olathe, Kans., Amanda Lambrecht of Baytown, Texas, John DeFord of Canon City, Colo., Jeremiah (Harmonie) DeFord of Montana, and Joshua DeFord of Blue Hill, Neb.&nbsp; Fifteen Great-Grandchildren: Miles and Caleb Lagler; Alison Arndt; Casey, Colson, and Cadge Uehling; Lauren, Kyan, and Easton Rice; Cienna, and Peyton Lambrecht; Asher, Lena, Naomi, and Rosalie DeFord, along with other family and friends. Evelyn Blanch (Berglund) Hisel, 92, of Oshkosh, Nebraska passed away Friday evening, July 30, 2021, at the Regional West Garden County Nursing Home.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Mountain Time on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at the Holechek-Bondegard Funeral Home in Oshkosh, Nebraska with Reverend Neil Carlson of the Chappell Zion Lutheran Church officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Ash Creek Cemetery near Lewellen, Nebraska.&nbsp; A dinner will follow at the Wesleyan Church west of Lewellen.

The funeral will be streamed live via the Holechek-Bondegard Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/hbfunerals) and available to watch after the service.

There will be no visitation and the casket will be closed.

Evelyn was born April 30, 1929, in North Platte, Nebraska to Frank and Elsie (Hammond) Berglund.&nbsp; She was baptized and confirmed in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oshkosh.

She was a graduate of Garden County High School in Oshkosh and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Kearney State College.&nbsp; She taught for 28 years in town and country schools.

She married Elton E. Hisel on June 8, 1956, in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oshkosh.&nbsp; They had a double wedding with her sister Ruth and William Hamilton.

They made their home on the Hisel Ranch which is located forty miles northeast of Oshkosh.&nbsp; Evelyn helped on the ranch as well as her teaching.

She enjoyed writing and wrote and published Mari Sadoz a wildflower along with a workbook for schools.&nbsp; She also published books for other people.&nbsp; She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting, making mission quilts, traveling to Julesburg to help with world relief projects, and visiting anyone who stopped by her house.&nbsp; Another thing she truly enjoyed was being a mentor for Garden County High School for several years.

Evelyn is survived by her sister, Ruth Hamilton of Lewellen; sons, Neville (Suzan) Hisel and Martin (Kelly) Hisel both of Ashby; and five grandchildren, Brad (Kathryn) Hisel of North Platte, Dina (Tanner) Connell of Whitney, Steve (Sara) Hisel of Scottsbluff, Tyrel (Cristina) Hisel and Alicia (Tanner) Manley of Scottsbluff.&nbsp; She was blessed with seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Frank and Elsie Berglund), her husband (Elton E. Hisel) and her brother-in-law (William “Bill” Hamilton).

Frances Ardell (Opheim) Kempf, age 90, of North Platte, NE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at Great Plains Hospital in North Platte.

Born June 3, 1931 in Mobridge, S.D. she was the daughter of the late Alton and Edith (Hoffman) Opheim.

Frances graduated from Selby High School in Selby, S.D. in 1949, and went on to get her Associate degree in secretarial training from the University of S.D. in Vermillion. She was baptized, confirmed and married her husband of 47 years, Roy Kempf on July 25, 1953 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Selby, S.D. Frances worked as a secretary at Aberdeen Federal Savings and Loan/Drager-Marshall Realty, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in San Francisco, CA; General Mills Research Division in Minneapolis, MN; Good Samaritan Society and St. John’s College in Winfield, KS; and the Presbyterian Church in North Platte, NE. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church in North Platte, where she served the church as Circle President and Secretary, WELCA (President – 1 term), and sang in the Choir. She loved volunteering and served as RSVP volunteer, Hospital volunteer with over 4348 hrs. as of 2018. She served as a Board Member with the North Platte Community Playhouse, and was a lifetime member of the Sweet Adelines chorus and quartet. Frances also loved to travel with family and friends to visit other parts of the country.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; and parents, Alton and Edith.

Frances is survived by her daughter, Lori Evans; son, Randy (Cindy) Kempf; grandchildren, Brandi Hayes (Phil), Benjamin and Bethany Kempf; great grandchildren, Lennox and Maddox Hayes; brother, Elwyn (Jalayne) Opheim; and sister, Phyllis (Pepper) Martin.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at First Lutheran Church, North Platte with Pastor Patrick Sipes officiating (casket will be closed for the service). Burial will follow in Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, NE. 

Friends are invited to visit from 1 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4th with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte, NE.

Frances Ardell Kempf  (1931-2021)

Thomas Harold Olson, Sr.&nbsp;of Lisco, Nebraska died peacefully on July 26, 2021. Born on August 31, 1935, Tom was the youngest of four children to Harold and Helen Olson. He grew up in the village of Lisco where he received his formal elementary education and the less formal education that a young boy finds when growing up in a rural town. His connection to the Sandhills would eventually lead Tom and his wife, Cynthia, back to Lisco where they would raise their three children, Kerstin, Lynne, and Tom Jr.

Tom graduated from Garden County High School with the class of 1953 and from the University of Nebraska in 1957. Upon college graduation, he received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. After his active duty, he continued serving as Nebraska’s Admissions Liaison Officer Coordinator overseeing officers who counseled young people interested in the Air Force Academy and ROTC programs. Tom ended his Air Force service as a full-bird colonel in the U.S. Air Force Retired Reserve.

Tom always considered himself a small-town man and a true son of Lisco, so he embraced an opportunity to work alongside his father at the Lisco State Bank. Thus began a prolific banking career that found Tom as the owner of banks in over 20 communities across Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. He served diligently as President of the Independent Bankers Association of America and the Nebraska Bankers Association. He also served as a director with Farmer Mac and the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Omaha Branch. Tom was most proud of his service as a board member and treasurer of 50+ years for Rush Creek Land &amp; Livestock and as a board member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka for eight years.

His dedication to both the banking industry and rural America was acknowledged by his peers through special honors including the 1992 University of Nebraska Builder Award; 1991 University of Nebraska College of Business Administration Alumni Association Business Leadership Award; 1982 University of Nebraska Alumni Achievement Award; 1993 Nebraska Bankers Association Contribution to Agriculture Award; and the prestigious Bruning Award from the American Bankers Association Center for Agriculture and Rural Banking.

Despite the myriad of impressive accolades, Tom’s reputation was most notably marked by a special kind of humility &amp; hard work only found in those whose hearts are tied to the Sandhills. Those who knew Tom well might argue that his “career” began when he was a ranch hand at just seven years old and never truly ended. He insisted on attending board meetings until his health would no longer allow.

Tom is survived by his wife of 64 years, Cynthia; his sister, Barbara Ferguson of Littleton, Colorado; daughter and son-in-law, Kerstin and Bill Eckstrom of Lincoln; daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Tim Petro of Birmingham, Alabama; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Kim Olson of Lincoln; his grandchildren Will, Claire and Maddie Eckstrom, Hamilton Keller, Matthew Petro and his wife Amanda, Kelly Neely and her husband Ross, and John Petro, and Tommy and Marin Olson; his three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Helen Olson; his brother and sister-in-law Bill and Joyce Olson; sister and brother-in-law Marjorie and Gene Eaton; brother-in-law Charles Ferguson; and daughter-in-law Stacie Olson.

Tom was most proud of his service as a board member and treasurer of 50+ years for Rush Creek Land &amp; Livestock and as a board member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka for eight years.His dedication to both the banking industry and rural America was acknowledged by his peers through special honors including the 1992 University of Nebraska Builder Award; 1991 University of Nebraska College of Business Administration Alumni Association Business Leadership Award; 1982 University of Nebraska Alumni Achievement Award; 1993 Nebraska Bankers Association Contribution to Agriculture Award; and the prestigious Bruning Award from the American Bankers Association Center for Agriculture and Rural Banking.Despite the myriad of impressive accolades, Tom’s reputation was most notably marked by a special kind of humility &amp; hard work only found in those whose hearts are tied to the Sandhills. Those who knew Tom well might argue that his “career” began when he was a ranch hand at just seven years old and never truly ended. Kristin M. Reynolds, age 71, of Georgetown, Colorado passed away May 13, 2021, in Georgetown with loved one’s by her side following a long battle with Parkinson’s.

Kris was born June 16, 1949, Albany, California. Kris was a Senior Market Associate For Sysco Foods Of Denver for 25 plus years. She dearly loved all of her customers.

She leaves behind her husband of 25 Years Mark Reynolds; son, Dylan O'Brien of Colorado Springs; daughter Megan O'Brien of Tucson, Arizona; one brother, Steve Davison of Virginia; two sisters, &nbsp;Jenine Davison of California and Laurie Kanes of California.

Kris spent her lifetime taking care of others, loyal to her core; from customers, friends, strangers, and family, no one in need ever walked away empty handed. She loved deeply and fiercely with a smile to remember and eyes that would light up a room. She will be missed, but never forgotten.

Ollie Hazel Schoneman, age 89, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Avamere in Lexington.

She was born on October 7, 1931, in Winnebago, Minnesota to Earl and Stella Day Todd Morgan. Ollie attended school in Winnebago and graduated with the class of 1950.

Ollie was united in marriage to Duaine W. Schoneman on November 11, 1951 in Winnebago, Minnesota. Five children were blessed to this union: Kelly, Debra, Karla, Tim and Scott. While living in Minnesota, Ollie worked for a canning company.

In 1960, the family moved to Lexington, Nebraska. Ollie stayed busy working various jobs which included, Sixth Street Food Store, Lexington Ice &amp; Cold Storage, Maloley’s IGA, Hennek’s True Value, and Walmart.

Ollie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lexington.

Survivors include her children, Kelly (Kevin) Swanson of Overton, NE, Debra (Tom) Miller of Eustis, NE, Karla (Mike) Denker of Johnson Lake, NE, Tim (Kim) Schoneman of Lexington, NE,&nbsp; and Scott (Angie) Schoneman of Holdrege, NE; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Shirley Morgan; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Ollie was preceded in death her parents; husband, Duaine in 2012; four sisters and three brothers.

Mr. David E. Hanes, age 69, of Culbertson, NE passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at Community Hospital in McCook, NE.

David was born December 24, 1951 in Benkelman, NE to parents Alfred Lyle and Frances Maxine (Cemer) Hanes.&nbsp; He was one of five children born to this union.&nbsp; David attended school in Stratton, NE where he graduated from Stratton High School with the Class of 1970.&nbsp;

David married Gale (McMichael) Hanes on July 3, 1991 in McCook.&nbsp; The couple was blessed with five children.&nbsp; David was a longtime employee of Parker Hannifin where he had worked for the last forty years.&nbsp;

David’s hobbies included hunting and fishing and he was a lifetime member of the NRA.&nbsp; David was a family man who cherished spending time with his grandchildren. He was an excellent cook who loved to grill outdoors for his family, and he also enjoyed boating and taking care of his many animals. &nbsp;

David was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father in law; and his sister, Carol Barber.

Those left to celebrate his life include his wife, Gale Hanes of Culbertson, NE; children, Dale (Lisa) Rowe of Hastings, NE, Travis Hanes of Palisade, NE, Diana (Darin) Staab of Hays, KS, Yolanda (Robert) Matson of McCook, NE and Candace Hanes of Lincoln, NE; brother, Dewayne (Sandra) Hanes of Broken Bow, NE; sisters, Judy Brunk of McCook, NE and Becky Hanes of Greeley, CO; as well as his ten grandchildren.

Melvin D. Tickle, age 82, longtime Ogallala, Nebraska resident, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at the Kearney Regional Medical Center. Melvin was born September 23, 1938, at McCook, Nebraska, to Howard and Opal (Echternach) Tickle, the second of six boys. He graduated from Madrid High School. Mel went on to graduate from Kearney State Teacher's College. On November 2, 1963, Melvin married Cheryl Elmshauser at Minden, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with three children, Dean, Rodney, and Rachelle. The family made their home in Ogallala, where Mel had worked for the Game &amp; Parks Commission from 1964 until his retirement in 2000. Mel would eventually find an enduring companionship with Karen Loden, and the two shared many years together until her passing in February of 2000. Mel had been classically trained as an English teacher, having student-taught at Gibbon, Nebraska. After obtaining his teaching certificate along with the ardent advice NOT to teach anyone, Mel found his true calling telling people to move their cars, trucks, and campers off the grass, among many other things, with the Game &amp; Parks Commission. Melvin loved the outdoors and was truly plugged in to the goings-on at the lake. Even after his retirement, he continued to "make the rounds," darkening all the doors of his favorite stops with regularity, especially Sands Edge and Otter Creek. Mel loved to play golf and made many a wonderful memory sharing a cart and a round with his brother, Lonnie, his children, and on cherished occasions, all of his brothers, who maintained a special bond that had been galvanized since their upbringing in Perkins County. In his later seasons of life, he came into a more profound sense for the bonds of family, enjoying more time with his children and grandchildren. It was also during this season of life that Melvin reaffirmed his faith in Jesus Christ and elected to be Baptized alongside his brother, Wayne. Melvin made his way to the Master's vineyard late in the day, but thanks be to God, the wages are the same for all who show up. Melvin was preceded in death by his brothers, Wayne and Lonnie Tickle, and nephews, Troy &amp; Trevor Tickle. Melvin D. Tickle  (1938-2021)

Darrel W. Smith, 78, of Valentine, Nebraska passed away Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the Cherry County Hospital in Valentine.

Darrel was born September 30, 1942 in Valentine, Nebraska to Allan and Alice (Burk) Smith. He grew up in Mission, SD and Valentine, receiving his education in Mission. Darrel married Iris Frailey in Winner, SD in 1961 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage. He was a longtime Valentine business owner.

Darrel professed to serve the Lord in 1955 as a young man.

He is survived by his wife, Iris of Valentine; daughters, Darla (Ken) Krisher and Rita Reimers all of Valentine; grandsons, Brandon (Sara) Reimers of London, Brenton (Mary) Reimers of Kearney, Ridge (Katie) Krisher of Prairie Du Sac, WI; great-grandsons, Ricardo Reimers and Hudson Reimers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Allan and Alice Smith; brother, Kon Smith; and grandson, Lance Krisher.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Valentine, Nebraska with Richard Gasser and Eric Sterling officiating. The casket will be closed and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

He grew up in Mission, SD and Valentine, receiving his education in Mission. Darrel married Iris Frailey in Winner, SD in 1961 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage. He was a longtime Valentine business owner.Darrel professed to serve the Lord in 1955 as a young man.He is survived by his wife, Iris of Valentine; daughters, Darla (Ken) Krisher and Rita Reimers all of Valentine; grandsons, Brandon (Sara) Reimers of London, Brenton (Mary) Reimers of Kearney, Ridge (Katie) Krisher of Prairie Du Sac, WI; great-grandsons, Ricardo Reimers and Hudson Reimers.He was preceded in death by his parents, Allan and Alice Smith; brother, Kon Smith; and grandson, Lance Krisher.Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Mt. Merle Ray Cheek of Maxwell, Nebraska went on to his heavenly home on July 23, 2021, at the age of 101.

Merle was born in Prairie City, Illinois, to John and Ina Cheek on December 8, 1919. In 1928 the family moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where Merle attended school.

In 1941, Merle decided to enlist into the military; he joined the Army Air Corps and served in WWII.&nbsp; Merle was sent to tech school to learn how to repair fighter planes then served in North Africa and Italy. Following his discharge, Merle returned to Colorado and went on to earn his BA from Rockmont Bible College in Denver.

On June 27, 1951, Merle was united in marriage to Stella Donovan and they made their home in Steamboat Springs where they raised their family. Merle worked as a custodian for the Steamboat School District and later did carpenter work for George Ebert Construction. He retired in 1984 then he and Stella moved to Nebraska a few years later. They were resident retiree volunteers at Maranatha Bible Camp in Maxwell, Nebraska.

Merle was an active member, deacon, Sunday School teacher and custodian of Euzoa Bible Church. After moving to Nebraska, Merle was a member of the North Platte Berean Church and later, Maxwell Baptist Church. Merle had a strong faith in the Lord which he passed on to his family. He was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ina; brothers, Russell and George; sister, Alice Rambo; and an infant daughter.

Merle is survived by his wife, Stella, of Maxwell; sons, George (Janice) Cheek, of Maxwell and Warren (Carol) Cheek, of LaGrange, WY; daughters, Lavon Cheek, of Steamboat Springs, CO, and Donna (Gary) Mahnken, of North Platte; grandchildren, Kris (Natalie) Cheek, Tara (Jeff) Kautz, Silas (Amanda) Cheek, Elaine Cheek, Charissa Cheek, Michael (Cassandra) Mahnken and Katie Mahnken; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Jocelyn, Kristyn, Kristopher, Josiah, Kate, Emma, Isaac, Isabella and a great-grandson soon to be born; as well as many other family.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at the Maxwell Baptist Church. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Plainview Cemetery. Gary Pearman, age 76, of Mullen, Nebraska died July 28, 2021, at his home.

Gary James Pearman was born on May 2, 1945, to Elmer (Neak was one of the last true horse traders) and Helen Mae Ingrum Pearman.&nbsp; His siblings include sister Rosalie, brothers Leland Dean (deceased in 1981), Clarence Lynn (Spook) and Terry Joe (Chub).&nbsp; His children include Shannon, John, and daughter-in-law Lourdes Nocera.&nbsp; Grandchildren Kelly and husband Sage Haythorn, Jensen and Jordan Nocera and Great Grandson Steel Haythorn.

He attended high school in Thedford and participated in football, basketball, and track, but his main interest was horses.&nbsp; He competed in High School Rodeos in rough stock, adding bull dogging his junior and senior years.&nbsp; In 1963, he qualified for the Nationals in Tarkio, MO.

In 1966, Gary was drafted into the Army.&nbsp; He headed to Louisiana for basic training then to El Paso, Texas to learn how to drive a truck and on to Germany to work in Transportation, a short time in Spain, where he went to some bullfights.&nbsp; He was discharged in 1968.

Gary got back into the rodeo circuit. He won the bull riding twice in Mullen.&nbsp; In 1981 and 1982 he won 2nd in the NSRA bulldogging event.&nbsp; It was normal for a bunch of guys to load up in front and back of his ol’ green pickup and head for the rodeo.

Growing up Gary always had a job usually on a ranch working at Big Creek, Jim Miller place and Sonny Hanna’s.&nbsp; He hauled drywall, drove a cement truck, worked for Cherry County, and worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as a laborer on an Anchor Gang and a Grinder Operator until he retired in 2005.

Gary has worn many hats in his life but his most favorite one of course is his cowboy hat.&nbsp; Gary has been around horses all his life.&nbsp; He’s always been darn good at training horses.&nbsp; The Carver Ranch at Whitman, NE hired Gary for 30 years to basically train their horses for their yearly horse sale.

When asked which horses were some of his favorites he mentioned Bill, Gray Bull and Zeke, but his most favorite one was Dusty, which was chosen as Bull Dogging Horse of the year in 1982.&nbsp; Gary married Betty Karen in 1990.&nbsp; She was doing some barrel racing and decided Dusty was her new barrel horse after Gary and Dusty beat all the girls at a All Girls Barrel Race at A.B. Cox’s.&nbsp;&nbsp; Betty went on to do very well on Dusty.

Gary is a true cowboy and excellent horseman.&nbsp; He along with Betty Karen have done everything they could to promote rodeo.&nbsp; They have spent countless hours in the arena teaching kids the right way to do whatever they were wanting to do and then having them and their horses or going to watch them compete all over the state.&nbsp; If a kid needs a horse Gary will mount them on one of his own or find one that works.&nbsp; Gary also has a large selection of tack just in case someone needs something.&nbsp; Gary is known for telling it like he sees it, which might have hurt some kids’ feelings a time or two, but it only made them cowboy or cowgirl up and improve in their talents.

You have to look long and hard to find a true cowboy that is so willing to share his knowledge and talent with our young kids.&nbsp; There are many young and old that looked up to Pearman for his knowledge and guidance. Thank You Gramps!

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Gwendolyn Lee "Gwen" Johnson, age 66, of Sutherland, Nebraska passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Sutherland Care Center. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Born August 2, 1954 in Wichita, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Richard &amp; Evelyn (Hudleston) Johnson. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Gwen spent most of her childhood and growing up in Cartago, California.&nbsp; She worked most of her career as a CNA and then went on to become an over-the-road truck driver.&nbsp; She loved seeing the country over-the-road and especially enjoyed trips through the desert. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Surviving are her children, Michael McCullar of California, Daniel McCullar of Idaho, Michele McCullar of California, Tina Davis of Falls City, Nebraska, and Joe Johnston (Ashley) of Sutherland, Nebraska; 13 grandchildren; and her sister, Romona Koltzau (Alan) of Virginia. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her brothers, Thor Johnson and Clifford Johnson. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Services are private. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Arrangements have been entrusted to the Adams &amp; Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte, Nebraska.

He enjoyed walk- abouts and is a founding member of #thewalkingpaws, he also enjoyed car rides and post Malone music. Pretty much anything his family did, he was right there with them. William "Dick" Reiss, age 79 of Brule, Nebraska passed away July 27, 2021, at his home in Brule. Dick was born May 1, 1942, at Kimball, Nebraska to Helmuth and Alice (Barkhoff) Reiss. He graduated from Kimball High School. On February 4, 1966, Dick married Karen Ann Radke at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Julesburg, Colorado. The couple made their home in Ogallala, Nebraska and their union was blessed with two children, Tammy and Kevin. In 1982, Dick established Valley Ag Services, which served the Keith and Sedgwick County areas. Dick sold the business in the 1990's and enjoyed farming, continuing to raise cattle. Dick had an appreciation for anything that would go fast. He loved cars and was a skillful and decorated stock car racer in his younger days. He loved spending time around the animals, especially working his cattle. Dick also enjoyed tinkering on his antique tractor collection. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; and his parents. Survivors include his children, Tammy (John) Sherman of Chappell, Nebraska and Kevin (Cindy) Reiss of Ogallala, Nebraska; grandchildren, Greg (Ashley) and Jeff (Kacey) Sherman, Mara (Cole) Peters, and Trevor Reiss; 5 great-grandchildren, Aspen, McKinley, Ryleigh, Gracyn, and Hudson. Julie Louraine Parsons was born on July 19, 1963 in North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp; She was raised in North Platte and lived in that area most of her life.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Her family gave her the nickname "Choo-choo" as a child.&nbsp; Julie graduated from North Platte High School and then she was part of the Opportunity Center in North Platte for many years.&nbsp; She worked for the NPOC General Thrift Store, North Platte Care Center as a House Keeping Specialist, TCE Janitorial Services at the North Platte High School, and Linda's Kitchen.&nbsp; She was an active member of the Berean Church while in North Platte.

Julie moved to Sidney, Nebraska in January of 2008 and became part of Region 1 OHD.&nbsp; She loved working in the community at Play It Again Sam's, Bomgaars and at the Sidney Veterinary Clinic.&nbsp; She was an active member of First Christian Church in Sidney and loved to participate in anything going on in her community, such as Special Olympics, Unified Basketball, bingo, and church activities.&nbsp; Julie was an avid bowler, she loved camping, crafting, and spending time with her friends.&nbsp; Julie had a smile that could light up anyone's day.&nbsp; She loved animals and especially her dog, Heidi.&nbsp; Most of all, Julie loved Jesus and would pray with anyone or for anyone.

She is survived by her sister, Karlene Sommers of North Platte, Nebraska; brother, Toby Parsons of North Platte, Nebraska; sister, Jennifer Samuels of Garner, North Carlina; and chosen family, The Roger &amp; Dixie Brown Family of Sidney, Nebraska.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Sylvia Ann Kruse.

Marie Katheryn Daffer, age 98, of McCook, NE passed away peacefully on July 26, 2021 at her home at Kinship Pointe in McCook.

Marie was born November 11, 1922 in Denton, TX to parents Teddie B. and Hazel L. (Stover) Rue.&nbsp; She was one of three children born to this union.&nbsp; Marie attended school in Texas, graduating from Sanger High School in 1940. She then went on to further her education by attending business school in Dallas.&nbsp;

On November 3, 1943, Marie married Robert “Bob” Daffer in San Antonio, Texas.&nbsp; The couple was blessed with three children: Robert Jr., Daniel and Kathie.&nbsp; Following Bob’s Honorable Discharge from the Army, the family moved to Nebraska, Bob’s home state.&nbsp;

Marie won the 1955 district three Mrs. America contest in part for her German Sweet Chocolate cake entry, as well as demonstrating her homemaker skills.&nbsp; The prizes of a new stove, set of pots and pans and water heater were just what the newlyweds needed. Marie enjoyed being a homemaker; cooking, sewing and gardening were some of her specialties. Her green thumb could make anything grow and there wasn’t a creature, big or small, on the farm she didn’t love. &nbsp;Marie also enjoyed traveling with her family and was an avid Husker Sports Fan. She loved to watch volleyball, basketball and football.&nbsp; Marie was a member of the Jolly Homemaker’s Club as well as an active member of the Lebanon Presbyterian Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Daffer; son, Robert Daffer, Jr.; and her sister, Dorothy Edwards.

Those left to celebrate her life include her children, Daniel (Janet Stephens) Daffer of Denver, CO and Kathie (Dan) Turley of Valley Center, KS; daughter in law, Marilyn Daffer of Independence, MO; brother, Teddie (Martha) Rue of Sanger, TX; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook, NE.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Lebanon Cemetery in Lebanon, NE.

Marie Katheryn Daffer  (1922-2021)

Theodore A. 'Ted' Thomas of Cozad, Nebraska passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at Nebraska Heart Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 87. Ted was born July 20, 1934 at Cozad, Nebraska to Glen and Ethyl (Dutton) Thomas. He graduated from Cozad High School with the class of 1952. 

Following graduation, Ted worked for the FBI in Washington D.C. for a few months taking finger prints before entering into the U. S. Coast Guard. On July 1, 1954 he married Phyllis Adams at Port Angeles, WA. Their union was blessed with three children: Tamela, Karen and Lisa. 

Having served with the U.S. Coast Guard for over 20 years, Ted was stationed many places. He started his military career in Arlington, Virginia and retired in Kodiak, Alaska. The couple then moved back to Cozad, Nebraska. 

Ted was active in the community, volunteering at the Cozad Food Pantry and Red Cross Disaster Relief. Ted was a Hot Air Pilot for almost 20 years with his own Balloon Rally in Kearney. He loved to travel, staying in a motor home park in Palm Springs, CA, and camping in nearly every state. Ted was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and daughter Tamela. 

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Cozad, NE; daughters, Karen (Kevin) Lehmann of Lincoln, NE and Lisa (Derrick) Gengenbach of Cozad, NE; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and many other extended family and friends.

Larry Wackett, age 78, of Chappell, Nebraska passed away Saturday morning, July 24, 2021 at his home.&nbsp; Larry was born on April 30, 1943.

Larry Wackett  (1943-2021)

Evelyn Marlene Holmes was born in Amelia, NE to Leon and Leone (Bacon) Thompson&nbsp;on February 9, 1936. She passed away peacefully at her home on July 25, 2021. Most people remember her from her time as a Ward Clerk at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow, Nebraska. She graduated as an elementary school teacher from Kearney State Teacher’s College in 1950’s and taught school until she married James J. Holmes from Arcadia, NE on March 28, 1959. They lived on a farm outside if Arcadia for their married life. Jim passed away in 1998. In 2005, Evelyn and her son Dan moved to Broken Bow, NE. Jim and Evelyn adopted Sandra Holmes in January of 1963 and later adopted Jude Holmes in November of 1967 and Daniel Holmes in December of the same year. Evelyn loved her children more than anything in the world. She had a huge heart and along with Jim, they became foster parents in 1985 and took in high school age children for about 3 years. While Evelyn was raising her kids, she also ran the Arcadia Guide. When Jude and Dan were still in school, she went back to school and became a Nurse Aide and began nursing at JMMMC. She held a few jobs over the years, including a secretary, a clerk at Gibson’s in Broken Bow, a dispatcher at the Ord Police Department, a Nurse Aid at Rose Lane in Loup City, but she landed back at JMMMC as a Ward Clerk until she retired in January of 2014. Evelyn was a fantastic cook and was famous for her homemade pizza, cinnamon rolls, pies and kolaches. She was also an avid quilter. She made numerous quilts for many people and until recently, was an active member of Custer’s Last Stitch. Evelyn was a member of the Methodist Church of Broken Bow and went to church regularly until the pandemic in 2020. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Leone Thompson; her husband Jim Holmes; and her sister Shirley Griffiths.

She leaves behind her children, daughter Sandy (David) Dubbs of Loup City, NE, son Jude (Denae) Holmes of Kingwood, TX and son, Dan Holmes of Broken Bow, NE; grandchildren Norman and Joseph Merrill (Sandy’s boys) and LeAire (Jude’s stepdaughter); great grandchildren Elijah and Allison Merrill (Norm’s kids), and one on the way (Joe’s).&nbsp;

Funeral Services will be Saturday, July 31, 2021, at 10:00 am at the Arcadia United Methodist Church in Arcadia, NE with Pastor Phil Sloat officiating. Burial will follow in the Arcadia Cemetery. 

A visitation will take place on Friday, July 30, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow, NE.

Evelyn Marlene Holmes  (1936-2021)

Dr. Tamara Sue (Hofman) Hlavaty, MD, age 62, formerly of Indianola, Nebraska, and currently of Grand Island, Nebraska passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021 surrounded by loved ones at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado following a stroke.

Tammy was born April 30, 1959 in McCook, Nebraska, the daughter of Harvey &amp; Ramona Hofman.&nbsp; She grew up on the family farm newar Indianola, Nebraska and attended a one-room schoolhouse in Ash Creek.&nbsp; She then graduated from Republican Valley High School in 1977.

Beginning at the age of 12, Tammy regularly played the organ during church services at the nearby St. John Lutheran Ash Creek Church and greatly valued her church community.

She continued her education at McCook Community College and was awarded a Regents Scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.&nbsp; She graduated from UNL with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and completed an internship to become a registered dietician.

During her undergraduate college years, Tammy worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and also won the title of Nebraska Wheat Queen in 1981.

In April 1984, she married Todd Hlavaty at St. John Lutheran Church in McCook, Nebraska, and they were married for the next 32 years.&nbsp; Tammy and Todd attended medical school at the University of Arkansas together and both earned MD degrees in 1991.&nbsp; At graduation, Tammy was awarded the Winston K. Shorey Award by her peers for being the most compassionated and humanistic physician in their class.

After earning her MD degree, Tammy did her medical residency in radiology at University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics.&nbsp; While in Iowa, she delivered her first child, Tessa, in 1993 and her second child, Troy, in 1996.

Tammy also served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve &amp; National Guard from 1986-1997.

Beginning in late 1996, she worked 17 years for Radiology Services and practiced at Great Plains Health in North Platte, Nebraska where she helped establish the first minimally invasive breast biopsy procedures.&nbsp; In the male-dominated field of radiology, Tammy advocated for women and focused much of her work on early detection of breast cancer.

Following her careen in North Platte, she joined Heartland Radiology at CHI St. Francis in Grand Island, Nebraska in 2016 and remained an enthusiastic physician until her passing.

In her most recent chapter, Tammy enjoyed spending time with her significant other, Mike, in Simi Valley, California and planned to retire there within the next several years.

Tammy was a devout Lutheran and believer in eternal salvation.&nbsp; Her favorite word was "gratitude" and she often expressed her gratitude for people who were there for her in good times and in challenging times.

Tammy greatly enjoyed running and competed in multiple major marathons across the United States including the New York Chicago, and L.A. Marathons.&nbsp; She also enjoyed cooking, new travel adventures, and spending time relaxing along ocean beaches.&nbsp; Her greatest pleasure was spending time with loved ones.&nbsp; Above all, Tammy loved being a mother and will be remembered for exemplifying the unwavering love of her children that all mothers strive for.

With patients and friends, Tammy had a way of making people feel seen, heard and appreciated without needing to say anything.&nbsp; She was a well-educated physician who kept the humbleness of a Nebraska farm girl.&nbsp; During her life, Tammy's presence, wisdom, and warmth were a gift to everyone she touched.

Following Tammy's wishes after her death, she continued to save lives through the gift of organ donation.

Tammy was preceded in death by her grandparents, William &amp; Henrietta Hofman and Reinhold &amp; Margaret Hinz; and her parents, Harvey &amp; Ramona Hofman.

She is survived by her daughter, Tessa Hlavaty (Jared) Thomsen of Portland, Oregon; her son, Troy Hlavaty of North Platte, Nebraska; her significant other, Michael Strombeck of Simi Valley, California; her ex-husband, Todd Hlavaty of North Platte, Nebraska; a brother, Brent (Debra) Horman of Indianola, Nebraska; a sister, Peggy (Cal) Stoltenberg of Norman, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. (CT), Saturday, July 31, 2021 at St. John's Lutheran Ash Creek Church, southeast of McCook, Nebraska with Rev. Justin Hildebrand and Rev. Mike Reiners officiating.  Interment will follow services in the Ash Creek Cemetery.  Visitation will take place at St. John's Lutheran Church on Saturday morning prior to services.

 </figure>Dr. Tamara Sue (Hofman) Hlavaty, MD, age 62, formerly of Indianola, Nebraska, and currently of Grand Island, Nebraska passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021 surrounded by loved ones at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado following a stroke.Tammy was born April 30, 1959 in McCook, Nebraska, the daughter of Harvey &amp; Ramona Hofman.&nbsp; She grew up on the family farm newar Indianola, Nebraska and attended a one-room schoolhouse in Ash Creek.&nbsp; She then graduated from Republican Valley High School in 1977.Beginning at the age of 12, Tammy regularly played the organ during church services at the nearby St. John Lutheran Ash Creek Church and greatly valued her church community.She continued her education at McCook Community College and was awarded a Regents Scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.&nbsp; She graduated from UNL with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and completed an internship to become a registered dietician.During her undergraduate college years, Tammy worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and also won the title of Nebraska Wheat Queen in 1981.In April 1984, she married Todd Hlavaty at St. John Lutheran Church in McCook, Nebraska, and they were married for the next 32 years.&nbsp; Tammy and Todd attended medical school at the University of Arkansas together and both earned MD degrees in 1991.&nbsp; At graduation, Tammy was awarded the Winston K. Shorey Award by her peers for being the most compassionated and humanistic physician in their class.After earning her MD degree, Tammy did her medical residency in radiology at University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics.&nbsp; While in Iowa, she delivered her first child, Tessa, in 1993 and her second child, Troy, in 1996.Tammy also served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve &amp; National Guard from 1986-1997.Beginning in late 1996, she worked 17 years for Radiology Services and practiced at Great Plains Health in North Platte, Nebraska where she helped establish the first minimally invasive breast biopsy procedures.&nbsp; In the male-dominated field of radiology, Tammy advocated for women and focused much of her work on early detection of breast cancer.Following her careen in North Platte, she joined Heartland Radiology at CHI St. Francis in Grand Island, Nebraska in 2016 and remained an enthusiastic physician until her passing.In her most recent chapter, Tammy enjoyed spending time with her significant other, Mike, in Simi Valley, California and planned to retire there within the next several years.Tammy was a devout Lutheran and believer in eternal salvation.&nbsp; Her favorite word was "gratitude" and she often expressed her gratitude for people who were there for her in good times and in challenging times.Tammy greatly enjoyed running and competed in multiple major marathons across the United States including the New York Chicago, and L.A. Marathons.&nbsp; She also enjoyed cooking, new travel adventures, and spending time relaxing along ocean beaches.&nbsp; Her greatest pleasure was spending time with loved ones.&nbsp; Above all, Tammy loved being a mother and will be remembered for exemplifying the unwavering love of her children that all mothers strive for.With patients and friends, Tammy had a way of making people feel seen, heard and appreciated without needing to say anything.&nbsp; She was a well-educated physician who kept the humbleness of a Nebraska farm girl.&nbsp; During her life, Tammy's presence, wisdom, and warmth were a gift to everyone she touched.Following Tammy's wishes after her death, she continued to save lives through the gift of organ donation.Tammy was preceded in death by her grandparents, William &amp; Henrietta Hofman and Reinhold &amp; Margaret Hinz; and her parents, Harvey &amp; Ramona Hofman.She is survived by her daughter, Tessa Hlavaty (Jared) Thomsen of Portland, Oregon; her son, Troy Hlavaty of North Platte, Nebraska; her significant other, Michael Strombeck of Simi Valley, California; her ex-husband, Todd Hlavaty of North Platte, Nebraska; a brother, Brent (Debra) Horman of Indianola, Nebraska; a sister, Peggy (Cal) Stoltenberg of Norman, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. (CT), Saturday, July 31, 2021 at St. John's Lutheran Ash Creek Church, southeast of McCook, Nebraska with Rev. Justin Hildebrand and Rev. Mike Reiners officiating. Interment will follow services in the Ash Creek Cemetery. Visitation will take place at St. John's Lutheran Church on Saturday morning prior to services.
