Jimmy “Jim” Blake, born on October 17, 1933, in Haddam, Kansas, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024, at Linden Court in North Platte, Nebraska. &nbsp;He was the third of four sons of Henry (Hank) Blake and Frena (Cales) Blake.&nbsp;

Throughout his life he remained close to his brothers. &nbsp;Jim graduated from Haddam Rural High School in 1951. &nbsp;He married his classmate, Anita Schocke, in October of 1951. &nbsp;They moved to Scottsbluff, Nebraska and to this union were born four children:&nbsp; Jolynn “Jo”, Craig, Janet “Jan”, and Brenda. &nbsp;With a strong work ethic, Jim began his career with the phone company as a lineman. His dedication and commitment saw him through more than 50 years with the company, culminating in his role as an engineer before his retirement. &nbsp;He was a 32 Degree Mason and a Shriner. &nbsp;In 1973, Jim married Theresa Hesselgesser. Together, they lived in Tyler, Texas, and Olathe, Kansas, before returning to Gering, Nebraska in 2011. They were married for 47 years before her passing in 2020 due to COVID. &nbsp; Jim remained in his own home until he moved to North Platte 51 days before he died. He moved to Linden Court in North Platte to be closer to family. &nbsp;He had various interests, finding pleasure in solving jigsaw puzzles, brain game puzzles, playing Yahtzee and solitaire. He enjoyed following the stock market. &nbsp;His knack for finding a good bargain at garage sales was always fun. &nbsp;

Per his wishes, cremation was chosen. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Haddam, Kansas, where he will be laid to rest in the town he called home.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, brothers Donel “Don” Blake and Rodney “Rod” Blake, and his wife Theresa, as well as nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

He is survived by his four children: Jolynn Hacker of Hebron, Nebraska; Craig Blake of Cedar City, Utah; Jan (Paul Koubek) Blake of North Platte, Nebraska; and Brenda Tobey of North Platte, Nebraska. Additionally, he is survived by his brother William (Bill) Blake of Mesa, Arizona, sister-in-law Katherine Blake of Burr Oak, Kansas, along with 16 grandchildren, 23 great- grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and a nephew.

Clara&nbsp;Vencill of North Platte passed away at home on May 9, 2024, at the age of 86.

Clara, the daughter of John and Clara Muhlenkamp, was born May 29, 1937, in Grainfield, KS. &nbsp;She grew up in North Platte where she graduated from high school with the Class of 1955. &nbsp;

On September 24, 1955, Clara married Fred Vencill in North Platte where they made their home. &nbsp;The couple had two daughters, Debra and Pamela, and were together for nearly 50 years when Fred passed away.

Clara worked as a secretary at Lab and Pathology for several years then at Red Roof Antiques. &nbsp;She loved antiques, stuffed bears and working in her yard and she enjoyed reading. &nbsp;Clara loved her family and big dogs, especially her dog, Sissy. &nbsp;

Along with her husband and parents, Clara was preceded in death by her daughter, Debra.

She is survived by her daughter, Pama Vencill (Bear Giles) of Venice, FL; son-in-law, Howard Gilliam of Madison, AL; &nbsp;grandchildren, Chad Gilliam (Dotty), Scott Gillam (Caty), Todd Gilliam (Parmita), Blake Gilliam (Stephanie), Emily Magill and Hunter Broland (Emily Rene); 11 great-grandchildren; and other family.

Clara Vencill (1937-2024)

Michael J. McCarthy, 74, of North Platte, NE passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024 in Lincoln, NE. Michael was born on April 11, 1950 in Omaha, NE, the son of M. Charles and Dorothy (Hollman) McCarthy.

Mike graduated from North Platte High School class of 1968, University of Lincoln in 1972, and from UNL school of law in 1975 with his J.D. degree. He was an accomplished scholastic athlete at North Platte High and pursued basketball at UNL where he was also a member and recruiting coordinator for Beta Theta Pi.

He was married in August 1972 in North Platte to Jane Rannie and together they had 4 sons: Matt, Marcus, Mitch, and Jake. Mike practiced law in North Platte, joining his father’s firm in 1975 until the present. He was a member and board president of the NE Bar Association, NE Golf Association, Great Plains Health Hospital, North Platte Public School Board, Chamber of Commerce, North Platte Country Club (River’s Edge), and a member of the Lincoln County Ambassador’s. He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church in North Platte. Mike enjoyed playing golf, was an avid NE Husker sports fan, coach, and youth sports advocate for many years.

Those left to cherish his memory are wife of 52 years, Jane; sons, Matt (Cassandra) McCarthy of North Platte, Marcus (Tessa) McCarthy of Pittsburg, PA, Mitch (Michelle) McCarthy of Lincoln, and Jake (Katie) McCarthy of Kearney; grandchildren, Alex Everhart, Marley, Jude, and Perry Fischer, Phineas, Julia, Jack, Cameron, and Annie McCarthy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by stepmother, Hazel Haase McCarthy.

Michael J. McCarthy (1950-2024)

Cecil R. Scarrow, age 82, of McCook, NE passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Hillcrest Caring Center in McCook.

Cecil was born on April 14, 1942 to parents Ray B. and Gladys M. (Reeves) Scarrow in Mankato KS. &nbsp;He was one of five children. Cecil graduated from high school in Benkelman, NE with the Class of 1960.

On October 3, 1964, Cecil married Ferma L. Wilkinson in Goodland, KS. They started their family in Benkelman, NE, where he was a farmhand. &nbsp;He spent his days outdoors surrounded by the beauty of nature, working with animals and being a part of the circle of life on the farm where he could see the fruits of his labor.

The family moved to Stratton where Cecil was a welder at Miller Manufacturing before returning to farming. &nbsp;After moving to McCook in 1991, he was able to retire in 2004. &nbsp;Cecil and Ferma coached the kid’s baseball and softball teams during the summer in addition to fishing, water skiing and camping at Swanson Lake. He enjoyed Husker football, driving fast and no, he never got a ticket. &nbsp;Cecil and Ferma loved racing, they spent Friday and Saturday nights at dirt tracks in Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska. &nbsp;On Sunday, they always watched NASCAR where Cecil always gave Ferma a hard time about “baby” Jeff Gordon. &nbsp;Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt, Jr were his favorites. The extended family took many trips to Colorado, Texas, South Dakota and Louisiana.

Cecil was preceded in death by his wife, Ferma; parents; three children, Jennifer, Julianna and Steven Scarrow; bothers Orville and Larry; sister Barbara Scarrow; Baby Scarrow and and a granddaughter, Brittani Daily.

Patricia Ann (Hansmeier) Engel, 87, of Omaha, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2024, on Mother’s Day.

Pat was born June 15th, 1936 to Carl and Esther (Blomenkamp) Hansmeier in Ogallala, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Patricia attended District 22 from 1st to 8th grade and graduated from Ogallala High School in 1953.&nbsp; She continued her education at Kearney State College earning a teaching degree.&nbsp; Patricia taught in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Ogallala and Grant as well as taught pre-school from her home for 35 years.&nbsp; She adored all her students and was a devoted teacher.&nbsp; She was confirmed in her faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church and was a member of Zion Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran.

Patricia met her future husband and the love of her life, Fred when he moved back to Grant after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. They were united in marriage on November 24th, 1957, for 61 years.&nbsp; Fred and Patricia had 4 children: Timothy, Todd, Tricia, and Troy.&nbsp; Being a mom was central to her life, as she was passionate about and fiercely loved her children.&nbsp; She was devastated when they lost 5-year-old Timmy to Leukemia. Pat thoroughly enjoyed following her children's and grandchildren’s sports and school activities.

When Pat wasn’t being a mom or teacher, you would find her cheering on the Huskers, loving on her dogs, tending to her beloved roses, avidly reading, being creative, and solving her puzzle books.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Esther Hansmeier, husband Fred, son Timothy Alan, one sister Betty Painter Gloy, two brothers Tom and Gerald (Jerry) Hansmeier, sister-in-law Janice Hansmeier, brothers-in-law Ivan Ekart, Ira Painter and Leonard Gloy, nephew Steve Hansmeier and grandson Stephen Demanett.&nbsp;

Survivors include two sons Todd (Jennifer) Engel and Troy (Cindy) Engel all of Omaha, one daughter Tricia Jacobsen of Kearney, two sisters Peggy Ekart of Imperial and Mary Sue (Danny) Borowski of Grant, sister-in-law Mary Ann Hansmeier of Ogallala, 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church at 10:30 am with Rev. Jon Dickmander officiating.&nbsp;

Inurnment will be in the Grant Fairview Cemetery at 1:30 pm.

Patricia Ann Engel (1936-2024)

&nbsp; Elaine A. Cantrell, 93, formerly of Lexington, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Westfield Quality Care in Aurora, Nebraska.

She was born on February 26, 1931, in Lexington, Nebraska to Lloyd and Gladys (Orthman) Kring. She attended Lexington Public Schools and graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1949. On November 20, 1949, Elaine was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert Cantrell in Lexington. Three children were blessed to this union: Linda, Tim, and Cheryl. In 1991, Elaine and her family were confirmed into the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Elaine spent many years working for the Dawson County Deputy Treasurer. After working long hours, she enjoyed spending time with her children and cook them delicious meals. She taught them important life skills such as canning. She often spent her days crocheting, sewing, and working on word puzzles. Elaine loved spending Sunday afternoons with her family, having game nights, playing bingo and dominos. Once she moved to Aurora, Nebraska, she participated in as many activities as Westfield Quality Care had to offer her.

Survivors include her beloved children, Tim (Eunice) Cantrell of Beemer, Nebraska, Linda Fees of Lexington, and Cheryl (John) Culver of Milford, Nebraska; grandchildren, Josh (Susie) Cantrell, Erin (Adam) Davis, Andrew (Jessica) Cantrell, John (Beth) Culver, and Ann Schram; great-grandchildren, Avery, Harper, Archer, Finley, Adley, Collin, Gabriel, Makayah, Daniel and Lakin; brother, Duane Kring of Tyler, Texas and sister-in-law, Marilyn Kring of Lexington.

Besides her parents, Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cantrell, son-in-law, Chuck Fees, and brothers, James Kring and Kenneth Kring.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington with Pastor Rob Kuefner, officiating.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, with family receiving guests from 5-7 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Esther Irene Hampton, age, 83 formerly of McCook, NE, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Home of the Flint Hills Assisted Living in St. George, KS surrounded by family. After the passing of her husband, Esther moved to Kansas to be closer to family. She touched the lives of many with her kindness, positive attitude embracing life to the fullest, and unwavering dedication to her family and friends.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Esther was born on February 25, 1941 at the family home southwest of McCook to Walter and Arlene (Dudek) Schuetz. She graduated from McCook High School in 1958.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; She married Bruce Hampton, the love of her life, on June 1, 1958 in McCook, NE. Esther was actively involved as a Sunday School Teacher, 4-H Leader and Girl Scout Leader. Esther worked at the A&amp;W Drive-In serving patrons with hometown goodness. She worked at the Chief Motel for many years. Esther and Bruce started a janitorial business in 1981 while continuing to farm. Esther provided courier service for the McCook National Bank. Esther and Bruce did the janitorial service at night for the bank. She enjoyed and dearly loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great granddaughter. She liked working in her garden, being outdoors and enjoying nature. Throughout the years her hobbies included hunting, fishing, ceramics, crafts, cooking, baking, and sharing delicious recipes with family and friends. Esther was a member of the Memorial Methodist Church.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Arlene Schuetz; her husband, Bruce A. Hampton of 62 years; son-in-law, Danny Pinkerton; two brothers-in-law, Glenn Rhoades and Morris Littlefield, Sr.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Survivors are two daughters, Peggy Pinkerton, Irvine, CA and Pam (Heinz) Wallace, Junction City, KS; grandchildren: Chris Wallace, Junction City, KS and Sara (Andy) Larson of Randolph, KS; great-granddaughter, Clara Larson; sisters, Valeria Rhoades, Papillion, NE and Veda Mae Littlefield, Lexington, TN. &nbsp; &nbsp; Norma Lee Whisler was born to Elmer Elias and Rynta Myrth (Hollars) Whisler on March 21, 1930 in McCook, Nebraska. &nbsp;She attended school in McCook and graduated with the McCook High School class of 1949. &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; Norma and her mother were baptized together on September 22, 1946. &nbsp;Norma attended McCook Christian Church. &nbsp;She worked periodically for JM McDonalds. &nbsp;She gave much of her time, talent, and gifts to the customers and fellow employees at McCook National Bank where she worked for over 34 years. &nbsp;She will be remembered by many in the community for the kind words and easy smile that she greeted them with when they walked through the bank doors.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Norma never married; she gave up having a family of her own when the task of caring for her own parents came into her life. &nbsp;She was a devoted daughter that took the responsibility in stride. &nbsp;Norma also had a deep passion for animals, especially her two dogs. &nbsp;She loved traveling with friends and spending time with her cousins, including her Whisler cousins in Eustis, Nebraska. &nbsp;Norma was a lifelong bowler and was proud of her 500 series accomplishment. &nbsp;She enjoyed coin collecting, a hobby she picked up from her father. &nbsp;Norma took great care of her home, flowers, and garden.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Norma passed away Saturday morning, May 4, 2024 at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. &nbsp;She was 94 years of age.

Norma Whisler (1930-2024)

&nbsp;Barbara Jean (Sutton) Morris, 80, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2024, in McCook.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; Barbara was born September 19, 1943, to Ruth A. and Ellis L Sutton in Stratton, Nebraska. She grew up on a farm north of Stratton and attended a one-room country school through fifth grade. Music was her love and she excelled in band, holding first chair in the brass section, with trumpet, three out of four years in high school and sang in the choir. She graduated in 1961 and attended one year at McCook Junior College.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; On December 2, 1961, she was united in marriage to Craig Long of Bird City, Kansas. &nbsp;To this union two children, Debra Jean and Rodney Craig, were born. &nbsp;Other than five years in Colorado, she lived 75 of her 80 years within an hour radius of McCook. While in McCook, she worked at Community Hospital.

&nbsp; &nbsp; In the summer of 1980, she met Gene Morris. They were united in marriage on March 20, 1981. They purchased the Benkelman Post and moved to Benkelman to operate the business until 1990 when they returned to McCook. &nbsp;Barbara worked at Hillcrest and returned to college where she graduated in 2000 and she also obtained her Medical Records Credentials from the American Health Information Management Association.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; After retiring from Hillcrest, she served as Director of the CASA Program for two years and then retired permanently.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; Even though she always worked outside the home, she and Gene always found time for golf. &nbsp;She was crazy about the game and was pretty good at it. She even got a hole-in- one in Benkelman and she loved reminding Gene that he hadn’t gotten one. Things changed considerably when Gene got not one, but two hole-in-ones.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; To mourn her passing, she leaves her daughter, Debra (Tilman) Jean Adair of Littleton, Colorado; son, Rodney Craig Long of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; and granddaughter, Gracelyn Jeannie of Littleton, Colorado.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; She also leaves her “Bonus” family; Marita Morris of Fort Worth, Texas, Andrew “Dru” Whetstone of Boulder, Colorado, Michelle Whetstone of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Christa Whetstone of Fort Worth, Texas, Ethan Whetstone of Norman, Oklahoma, Zylus Johnson of Fort Worth, Texas, Michelle (Morris) Spieker, husband Tom, and Ella and Kai Spieker of Dana Point, California, John Parker Adair, wife Meghan and Vincent Walter Adair of Omaha, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Barbara Morris (1943-2024)

&nbsp;&nbsp; Wavalee Couse was born on the family farm near Bell Plain, Kansas on Feb 3, 1935 to Clara Beulah (Keen) and Leslie Robert Howell. She died at Community Hospital May 10, 2024 surrounded by her children.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Her family moved during the depression to Brush, Colorado and finally settled in McCook, Nebraska. &nbsp;Wavalee graduated from McCook High School with the Class of 1953. &nbsp;Later that year, she married Roger Kerr in McCook.

&nbsp; &nbsp; In 1958, she graduated from McCook Beauty Academy and worked as a beautician around the community for many years. &nbsp;Wavalee worked at many professions; Sehnert’s Bakery, Hillcrest Nursing Home as kind and caring aide, Community College as a cook, and as a door greeter at Walmart.

&nbsp; &nbsp; In 1959, Wavalee met and married Maurice Couse. They lived on the family farm northeast of McCook and raised five kids there. &nbsp;Wavalee enjoyed crafting, quilting, boating and fishing. &nbsp;She finally started painting in her 80's. &nbsp;On any given sunny day you could find her and Maurice fishing with her treasured lure, a purple wigglewort. She loved camping with her family at area lakes. In the off season, she was her grandchildren's biggest fan and enjoyed their wide array of sporting events. Even in later years, she never missed an online game and was looking forward to the next seasons.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Wavalee was raised in the Church of God in McCook and later joined the Christian Church in Indianola where she taught bible and Sunday school. She then joined the Baptist Church in McCook. &nbsp;She socialized with friends at bible study and water aerobics.

&nbsp; &nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maurice; brother, Raymond Howell; Sister; Viola Evelyn Haag; brother, Gary E. Howell; brothers-in-law, and a daughter-in-law, Rita Couse.

&nbsp; &nbsp; She is survived by one sister, Bonna Mae Walker of Holdrege; daughters, Deborah Kerr Rogers (Bill) of Bartley and Marlyn Kerr Peters (Rod) Of McCook; sons, Robert Kerr (Tammy) of Mathias, Texas, Scott Couse (Missy) of North Platte, Nebraska, and Ryan Couse of Portage, Wisconsin; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and extended family, Barb Couse Wilson (Gene), Virgil Couse (Alice); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Graveside services are scheduled 10 AM on Friday morning, May 17, 2024 at Riverview Cemetery in McCook with Pastor Mike Roth providing words of comfort. &nbsp;There will be no visitation as it was Wavalee’s wish not to have a public viewing.

She died at Community Hospital May 10, 2024 surrounded by her children.&nbsp; &nbsp; Her family moved during the depression to Brush, Colorado and finally settled in McCook, Nebraska. &nbsp;Wavalee graduated from McCook High School with the Class of 1953. &nbsp;Later that year, she married Roger Kerr in McCook.&nbsp; &nbsp; In 1958, she graduated from McCook Beauty Academy and worked as a beautician around the community for many years. &nbsp;Wavalee worked at many professions; Sehnert’s Bakery, Hillcrest Nursing Home as kind and caring aide, Community College as a cook, and as a door greeter at Walmart.&nbsp; &nbsp; In 1959, Wavalee met and married Maurice Couse. They lived on the family farm northeast of McCook and raised five kids there. &nbsp;Wavalee enjoyed crafting, quilting, boating and fishing. &nbsp;She finally started painting in her 80's. &nbsp;On any given sunny day you could find her and Maurice fishing with her treasured lure, a purple wigglewort. She loved camping with her family at area lakes. In the off season, she was her grandchildren's biggest fan and enjoyed their wide array of sporting events. Even in later years, she never missed an online game and was looking forward to the next seasons.&nbsp; &nbsp; Wavalee was raised in the Church of God in McCook and later joined the Christian Church in Indianola where she taught bible and Sunday school. She then joined the Baptist Church in McCook. &nbsp;She socialized with friends at bible study and water aerobics.&nbsp; &nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maurice; brother, Raymond Howell; Sister; Viola Evelyn Haag; brother, Gary E. Howell; brothers-in-law, and a daughter-in-law, Rita Couse.&nbsp; &nbsp; She is survived by one sister, Bonna Mae Walker of Holdrege; daughters, Deborah Kerr Rogers (Bill) of Bartley and Marlyn Kerr Peters (Rod) Of McCook; sons, Robert Kerr (Tammy) of Mathias, Texas, Scott Couse (Missy) of North Platte, Nebraska, and Ryan Couse of Portage, Wisconsin; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and extended family, Barb Couse Wilson (Gene), Virgil Couse (Alice); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; &nbsp; Graveside services are scheduled 10 AM on Friday morning, May 17, 2024 at Riverview Cemetery in McCook with Pastor Mike Roth providing words of comfort. &nbsp;There will be no visitation as it was Wavalee’s wish not to have a public viewing.&nbsp; &nbsp; Memorials in Wavalee’s name are suggested to Community HealthCare and Hospice of McCook. &nbsp;Online condolences may be left at herrmannfh.com. &nbsp;Arrangements have been entrusted to Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook.

Wavalee Couse (1935-2024)

&nbsp;&nbsp; Sheila Lee Colson was born on June 23, 1949 in Hays, Kansas to Roy G. and Virginia (Loreg) Hageman.&nbsp; She graduated from Cambridge High School and went on to further her education by graduating from the Barns School of Business in Denver, Colorado.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On February 22, 1969, Sheila was united in marriage to Kenneth Colson in Cambridge, Nebraska.&nbsp; The couple lived on the farm in Frontier County until they moved to Cambridge, Nebraska in 1970.&nbsp; In Cambridge, Sheila kept the books and worked with Ken in the family business, Colson Construction.&nbsp; She also raised AKC registered puppies for many years.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sheila enjoyed fishing and gardening.&nbsp; She will always be remembered for her amazing tomatoes!&nbsp; She was also an avid quilter and was a master of any type of stitching.

Sheila Lee Colson (1949-2024)

Betty June (Heidebrink) German was born to John H. Heidebrink and Edythe Brown Heidebrink on June 22, 1931 in Gothenburg, NE and passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024 in Cozad, NE with family at her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, John, her husband, Roger W. German, and an infant grandson, Lucas German High. She is survived by her daughter, Alisa High Johnson (Rod) of Albuquerque and her son Britt German (Kerry) of Cozad. Her grandchildren include Jason (Jessica) German of Cozad, Jess (Mat) Haywood of Omaha, Breanna (Tristan) Trumble and Alynn (William) Sampson, both of Lincoln. Her great-grandchildren are Maddex and Miles German, Mccoy, Isabel, and Kolt Haywood, Kaylie, Noah, Isabelle and Quinn Trumble, and Eli and Everly Sampson. She is also survived by two brother-in-laws, Rex German and Doug German and many nieces and nephews. 

Family was always the center of her world and she loved them all dearly. Betty met Roger at Potter’s Drug store in Gothenburg where she had worked after school and on Saturdays since she was 11 years old. They married on August 17, 1952 when he returned from serving in Korea. They lived briefly in Arlington, VA while he was stationed there at the end of his tour before moving back to Cozad. This was just the beginning of many moves and travel adventures. They lived in many other states as well, including Oregon, Idaho, California, Ohio, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Missouri. It is not known if this is what she had envisioned for her life when she was a young woman, or exactly how she felt about it along the way, but one thing is certain, it was never boring. She always said that “Roger had itchy feet”. These many moves served as rest stops along her journey that introduced her to many new friends, interesting places and cultures. She learned to be very adaptable and accommodating. She became a master at “blooming where she was planted”. Betty was always active in a church until her later years. She belonged to several card groups, one of which formed when they were in their 20’s and was still going many years later when they all were elderly. Betty was very social and had never met a stranger that she didn’t make a friend. She had a couple of perfect jobs along the way, both in gift shops in Yellowstone and Cozad where she could be both helpful and socialize with friends, neighbors and visitors. 

Her Daddy was her hero. He made furniture for her dolls and nursed her back to health when she had rheumatic fever in grade school. She loved music, especially of the 40’s and 50’s as she spent much time in her youth at the community dance hall where her father was a musician. She was a good student, excelled at spelling, played the flute in marching band and loved word games. She also loved collecting dishes, coloring with the grandkids, Roger’s roses and anything chocolate. She didn’t start out as a great cook but learned with experience and Roger’s help, so nobody starved. Her ham ball recipe and technique have become legend and a tradition passed on to the next generations. To quote her niece, Shelly,&nbsp;“she was&nbsp;a gentle, gracious soul who lived a long&nbsp;adventurous life”.&nbsp;She will be greatly loved and missed.

Graveside memorial service with military honors will be held Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Meadowlark Pointe.

Betty June German (1931-2024)

&nbsp; &nbsp; Leona McDaniel was born on Black Fork Creek near Nashoba, Oklahoma to Dan and Ada Nobles. She was the second born after her twin Leon. She was one of ten children. She graduated from Crowder High School on May 22, 1958 where she lettered in her favorite sport, Basketball.

On November 26,1958 she married David McDaniel in Denver, Colorado. They lived on Newton Street until they bought their forever home on Quitman Street in Westminster, Colorado. In 2009 they retired and moved to McAlester, Oklahoma. In 2016 they moved back to Westminster due to David’s cancer. In 2022 Leona moved to Palisade, Nebraska and lived until her passing.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Leona worked at Denver Tent and Awning. After having her children, Raymond and Jenice, she started a home daycare. She did daycare for 35 plus years. Children she had watched in the past grew up and had families of their own and sent their kids to Leona.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Leona and her husband David loved going on cruises. They looked forward to their yearly Las Vegas trip. &nbsp;They had a cabin in Granby, Colorado which the family spent a lot of time fishing and gathering firewood. They took many trips and vacations with her sister and brother-in-law, Larry and Lina McDaniel. They went on many camping trips to Dumont, Colorado. They loved going back to McAlester, Oklahoma every year to visit family. Leona loved to sew. She had made many quilts over the years. She made personalized Christmas stockings for all her grandkids and great-grandkids and many of her daycare kids. &nbsp;She will be known for this tradition. She loved to fish but she would never bait her hook or take the fish off. &nbsp;When she got a bite, her legs would go up in the air and yell “OH SHOOT, OH SHOOT”. &nbsp;In 2017 she got addicted to NASCAR. Her favorite driver was Martin Truex, Jr.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Leona passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 6, 2024 in Palisade, Nebraska. &nbsp;She was 85 years of age.

&nbsp; &nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Ada Nobles; seven siblings; husband, David McDaniel; and daughter, Jenice Schwettman.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Survivors include her sisters, Gracie Oneal and Pearl Baucom of McAlester, Oklahoma; son, Raymond (Kristy) McDaniel Palisade, Nebraska; son-in-law, Matt Schwettman of Colorado; six grandchildren: Christine (Chrissy) Torres Sterling, Colorado, Cody (Logan) McDaniel Ft. Lupton, Colorado, Melissa (Swede) Morgan of Colorado, Mathew (Cindy) Schwettman of Colorado, Hunter (Deven) McDaniel Norfolk, Virginia, and Wyatt McDaniel Enders, Nebraska; and 12 great-grandchildren: Tyler, Imagine, Danyelle, Lily, Ashley, Christian, Kalie, Eli, Aby, Lane, Corbin, and Percy due September 2024.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Cremation was chosen and Leona will be laid to rest at Ollinger Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. &nbsp;Date is to be determined at a later time.

Leona McDaniel (1938-2024)

Gary Lane Anderson passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024, during a nap in his favorite chair in his apartment in Ogallala, Nebraska. He was just six weeks shy of his 90th birthday.

Gary was well known for his passion for discovery, learning, and ultimately achieving levels of excellence in all endeavors. He loved the lake life, boating, scuba diving, but also mastered snow skiing, target shooting, billiards, ham radio operation, photography, and photo processing, spearfishing, all of which he also taught and encouraged his children to pursue. He loved all genres of music, art, culture, and was articulate and knowledgeable on a wide range of topics.

Gary was born on June 21, 1934, in Valentine, Nebraska. An enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux tribe via his father, Ted Anderson, he spent time on the reservation in his early years. As a child, he lived in Grand Island, and eventually Cozad, Nebraska. Gary enjoyed a close relationship with his mother, Virginia Dillard, her sisters, his grandmother Maude Lunney, and his uncle Frank Lunney and cousin Ray Pierson.

Gary contracted polio at age 14 and was hospitalized in the Grand Island polio ward and rehab center for several months. He met his wife, May Ladean Knutson, while attending Cozad High School, and they later married in Seattle, Washington, in 1952 at Sand Point Naval Air Station where he was stationed in the U.S. Navy. They had four children, two girls followed by two boys.

Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Burdick Dillard, and his two sons, Gregory and Geoffrey Anderson. Gary is survived by his daughters, Joy Brisighella of Logan, Utah, and Sandy Anderson-O'Banion (Jeff) of Gunnison, Colorado, and their children: Brandon Clark and Natalie Brisighella of Logan, Utah, Ian O'Banion of Fort Collins, Colorado, and the children of his late son Greg: Dane Anderson (Jamie) of Ogallala, and Demi Folk (Evan) of Fort Collins, Colorado. Gary was blessed with (soon to be) six great-grandchildren.

Throughout his military career in the Navy and later in the Air Force, Gary enjoyed travel and adventures that took him from Seattle, Washington, to Waukegan, Illinois, to Pensacola and Panama City, Florida, then to Japan and Korea for three years. Upon his return, the family lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, while he finished his pre-med degree at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Gary and his growing young family were constantly on the move, with assignments throughout the U.S. and Europe. In Florida, North Dakota, Michigan, and then in 1965, they moved to France, stationed at Chambley Air Force Base but lived in the little French village of Thiaucourt. Gary, already a Southern Baptist Deacon, was ordained as a minister assigned to a small church for other military personnel and expats. He attended Martin Bucer Evangelical Theological Seminary in Bonn, Switzerland. When French president Charles De Gaulle closed the U.S. Military presence in France in 1966, the family took a new assignment to Germany, stationed at the Wiesbaden Air Force Base, but again living off base in the little village of Rudesheim on the Rhine River. There, Gary was again assigned as a pastor to a small Southern Baptist church, this time in Bad Kreuznach. While in Europe, the family traveled to Italy, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, in addition to France and Germany.

In 1969, Gary's assignment in Europe ended and he moved his family back to the States, assigned to Lowry Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, where he retired in 1971 after 20 years of service and opened a dental laboratory there. In 1976, Gary and May divorced, and he moved back to Nebraska, marrying his second wife, Thelma Ann Cooper. They lived in Hershey and co-owned Butch's Tavern before moving to Lake McConaughy before divorcing. Gary then managed the Bayside Villa mobile home park and storage facility at the lake for many years. After his son Greg passed away, Gary left his lake life and moved into Ogallala to a lovely apartment at Wel Life Assisted Living where he enjoyed maintenance-free living and the retirement benefits he had worked for all his long and adventure-filled life.

Gary's family kindly requests that his memory be honored through contributions to the Big Mac Sports Club at P.O. Box 364, Ogallala, NE 69153.

They had four children, two girls followed by two boys.Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Burdick Dillard, and his two sons, Gregory and Geoffrey Anderson. Gary is survived by his daughters, Joy Brisighella of Logan, Utah, and Sandy Anderson-O'Banion (Jeff) of Gunnison, Colorado, and their children: Brandon Clark and Natalie Brisighella of Logan, Utah, Ian O'Banion of Fort Collins, Colorado, and the children of his late son Greg: Dane Anderson (Jamie) of Ogallala, and Demi Folk (Evan) of Fort Collins, Colorado. Gary was blessed with (soon to be) six great-grandchildren.Throughout his military career in the Navy and later in the Air Force, Gary enjoyed travel and adventures that took him from Seattle, Washington, to Waukegan, Illinois, to Pensacola and Panama City, Florida, then to Japan and Korea for three years. Upon his return, the family lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, while he finished his pre-med degree at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Gary and his growing young family were constantly on the move, with assignments throughout the U.S. and Europe. In Florida, North Dakota, Michigan, and then in 1965, they moved to France, stationed at Chambley Air Force Base but lived in the little French village of Thiaucourt. Gary, already a Southern Baptist Deacon, was ordained as a minister assigned to a small church for other military personnel and expats. He attended Martin Bucer Evangelical Theological Seminary in Bonn, Switzerland. When French president Charles De Gaulle closed the U.S. Military presence in France in 1966, the family took a new assignment to Germany, stationed at the Wiesbaden Air Force Base, but again living off base in the little village of Rudesheim on the Rhine River. There, Gary was again assigned as a pastor to a small Southern Baptist church, this time in Bad Kreuznach. While in Europe, the family traveled to Italy, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, in addition to France and Germany.In 1969, Gary's assignment in Europe ended and he moved his family back to the States, assigned to Lowry Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, where he retired in 1971 after 20 years of service and opened a dental laboratory there. In 1976, Gary and May divorced, and he moved back to Nebraska, marrying his second wife, Thelma Ann Cooper. They lived in Hershey and co-owned Butch's Tavern before moving to Lake McConaughy before divorcing. Gary then managed the Bayside Villa mobile home park and storage facility at the lake for many years. After his son Greg passed away, Gary left his lake life and moved into Ogallala to a lovely apartment at Wel Life Assisted Living where he enjoyed maintenance-free living and the retirement benefits he had worked for all his long and adventure-filled life.Gary's family kindly requests that his memory be honored through contributions to the Big Mac Sports Club at P.O. Patricia Ruth "Pat" Clinger, age 72, of North Platte unexpectedly passed away on May 12, 2024. &nbsp;

Pat was born May 14, 1951, to Carol and Mary (Eagan) Fairley at Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;Shortly after Pat was born the family relocated to North Platte, where she grew up. &nbsp;She graduated from NPHS in 1969, then received her Associates Degree from Mid-Plains Community College and her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Kearney State College.

Pat taught and substitute taught in many communities including Ansley, Broken Bow, Loup City and Litchfield. &nbsp;After her children where grown, Pat followed her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. &nbsp;She was an EMT with the Ansley Fire and Rescue for many years then worked at CHI Hospital in Grand Island before transferring to North Platte Great Plains Regional Medical Center. &nbsp;Pat worked in various departments throughout the hospitals and eventually retired.

On April 23, 1972, Pat married Calvin Clinger. &nbsp;They were blessed with three children, Shaun, Jared and Crystal, and lived on a farm near Ansley. &nbsp;Pat was very involved with the kids and their school activities, 4-H, FFA and Boy Scouts. &nbsp;She was so proud of her sons for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Not only was Pat a part of her children's lives, she also worked with children through youth groups and taught Sunday School at the Baptist Church where she was an active member and Deaconess. &nbsp;After she and Calvin moved to North Platte, they attended First Christian Church.

Pat was an amazing and caring woman. &nbsp;Her family was always most important to her and she will be greatly missed.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Joyce Annette (Kohlmeier) Trosper, age 75, passed away on May 12, 2024, at the Tri-Valley Hospital in Cambridge, Nebraska after a short, hard-fought battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.&nbsp; She was surrounded by her family who will miss her dearly.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Joyce was born on January 13, 1949, in Yuma, Colorado to Hubert H.W. and Lois Isabele (Tupker) Kohlmeier.&nbsp; Joyce graduated from McCook, Nebraska High School in&nbsp;1967.&nbsp; From two previous marriages, she was blessed with four children.&nbsp; When she married Norman Fredrick Trosper on May 24, 1977, she gained three additional children, and they have enjoyed 47 years together.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Joyce was a very hard worker and also a natural caretaker.&nbsp; She and Norm owned and operated the Dairy Creme, which was enjoyed by the community, ball teams, kids from the swimming pool, and the many friends the Trosper bunch brought home.&nbsp; Joyce also worked many years for Cambridge Memorial Hospital as a CNA, and Tri-Valley Health Systems as a Physical Therapist Assistant and Receptionist.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Joyce enjoyed playing dominos with her friends, afternoon coffee club, a bowling league, snow birding to Texas, relaxing at home with her beloved dogs, and the company of her close friends, including Valaine Kester and Wanda White.&nbsp; She loved beer and Oreos - together!&nbsp; Joyce was a stranger to no one.&nbsp; If you were her friend, you were her family, and her door was always open to you.&nbsp; She would tell all those she loved that she was posting angels around them.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, David Kohlmeier.

Linda was born November 8th, 1949, to James (Jim) and Madonna (Janson) Nichelson in Lexington, NE. &nbsp;She and her two brothers grew up all over the United States as Jim put up Hay Mills. &nbsp;

In January of 1972, she married Delson Runyan. &nbsp;To this union one child was born, Dawnell. &nbsp;On August 15th, 1981, she married Maynard Barnes who brought four children with him into this union, Rhonda, George, Jr., Terry, and Lori.&nbsp;

Linda lived a full life, from living in Florida to California, then back to Nebraska. &nbsp;Linda worked as a waitress at Tumbleweed and Stockman’s Café, and a baker at Grocery Kart. Linda and Maynard enjoyed camping and fishing. &nbsp;They were camp hosts at Merritt Reservoir from 2005 until 2021. They met many people from all over the United States and became well-known throughout Nebraska and surrounding States. &nbsp;They enjoyed helping people who were new to the area.&nbsp;

Linda is survived by her loving husband, Maynard Barnes, daughters, Rhonda (Bill) Woods of Ansley, Lori (Jamie) Bonde of Callaway, Dawnell (Shannon Paul) Ford of Wilcox, two sons, George (Sharron) Barnes of Litchfield, Terry Barnes of Ansley, sisters-in-law Myrna Nichelson of Chula Vista, CA, Lauretta Rice of Dunning, Jan Barnes of Valentine, and Patti Barnes of Broken Bow, and brother Mike Nichelson of Lexington. Along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dearest husband,&nbsp; father, grandfather, and brother, James (Jim) Edward Story, who left this world on April 29, 2024, at the age of 84. &nbsp;He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.

Jim Edward was born on December 2, 1939, in Burwell, Nebraska to his parents, Alvin and Eleanore (Dunn) Story.

Jim was raised across the sandhills of Nebraska from North Platte, Ainsworth, Thedford, Cozad, and Arnold where he spent his early days stacking hay and lifeguarding. &nbsp;He attended Arnold High School where he was a prolific athlete (competing in football, basketball, and track, including a state championship in high jump) before graduating in the class of 1959, with his high school sweetheart and his future wife, Donna Rae Harwager. &nbsp;

Jim and Donna were wed on January 21, 1961, at the Methodist Church in Arthur, Nebraska. &nbsp;They began their married life as he worked at the Flying A Cattle Company and Smith Farms in Arnold, Nebraska.  </figure>With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dearest husband,&nbsp; father, grandfather, and brother, James (Jim) Edward Story, who left this world on April 29, 2024, at the age of 84. &nbsp;He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.Jim Edward was born on December 2, 1939, in Burwell, Nebraska to his parents, Alvin and Eleanore (Dunn) Story.Jim was raised across the sandhills of Nebraska from North Platte, Ainsworth, Thedford, Cozad, and Arnold where he spent his early days stacking hay and lifeguarding. &nbsp;He attended Arnold High School where he was a prolific athlete (competing in football, basketball, and track, including a state championship in high jump) before graduating in the class of 1959, with his high school sweetheart and his future wife, Donna Rae Harwager. &nbsp;Jim and Donna were wed on January 21, 1961, at the Methodist Church in Arthur, Nebraska. &nbsp;They began their married life as he worked at the Flying A Cattle Company and Smith Farms in Arnold, Nebraska. The couple welcomed five children: Randy, Brian, Kelli, John, and Bob. &nbsp;In 1969, Jim and Donna moved to Coon Rapids, Iowa where they raised their kids and worked for the Garst Cattle Company. &nbsp;Their shared adventures took them to Delta Junction, Alaska where Jim spent a year working in road construction before returning to Stapleton, Nebraska in 1999 where Jim and Donna worked as a certified 18-wheel truck driver for Lacaeyse Transport based in Grinnell, Iowa for over 15 years. &nbsp; Upon retirement, Jim devoted his life to his wife and family.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Those that survive Jim include his children: Randy (Tami) Story of Alta, Iowa; Brian Story of Williams, Iowa; Kelli (Kim) Reis of Webster City, Iowa; John (Janelle) Story of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Bob (Brandy) Story of North Platte, Nebraska; his grandchildren: Amy (Sailesh Babhania) Reis of Zionsville, Indiana; Chelsie (Dustin) Kopaska of Guthrie Center, Iowa; Jordan (Nick) Wonderlin of Lexington, North Carolina; Logan (Dexter) Hanson of Round Rock, Texas; Izaac (Karlie Kinneer) Reis of Leesburg, Virginia; Macey (Ethan) Budke of North Platte, Nebraska; Delaney (Nick) Meyer of LeMars, Iowa; Taylor (Scot) Simons of Panora, Iowa; Garett (Skye) Story of North Platte, Nebraska; Chenoa (James) Gradert of Sibley, Iowa; Gabe Story of Nevada, Iowa; Matthew (Jordan) Story of Charleston, West Virginia; Samuel (Nathan) Story of North Platte, Nebraska; 14 great-grandchildren; brother: Jerry (Sharon) Story of Fairbanks, Alaska; sister: Jan Coble of California; sisters and brother-in-law: LaVon Harwager of Arnold, Nebraska; Anita Harwager of Stapleton, Nebraska; David Harkins of North Las Vegas, Nevada; as well as numerous relatives and friends who will deeply miss his presence.He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna Rae, with whom he shared 62 years of adventurous and blissful marriage; parents: Alvin and Eleanore Story; sister: Jody Harvey; brother-in-law: Ron Harvey; mother and father-in-law: Leo and Florence Harwager; brothers and sisters-in-law: Marilyn, Bill (Karen), Jack, Dan, and Dean Harwager; and great-granddaughter: Rynleigh Story.&nbsp;&nbsp;A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the United Methodist Church in Arnold, Nebraska. Burial will follow at Arnold Cemetery with a luncheon immediately available upon conclusion. Jim Story (1939-2024)

Sharon Kay Fellows, 71, of Lexington, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at the Lexington Regional Health Center.&nbsp;

Sharon was born on January 12, 1953, in Germany, to Dwayne and Evelyn (Jensen) Brown. Sharon lived in various places throughout her childhood while her dad was stationed in the Army. She received her GED while living in Lincoln.

Sharon made her home in Lexington in 1993, to live with the love of her life, Gary Ballheim. She held many careers including working for Karre City Bakery, Service Master and working as a custodian for the Middle School until her retirement. She enjoyed going to work every day and visiting with the students.

Sharon was a doting grandmother and always made a priority to care for and give extra love to all her grandchildren. She spent as much quality time with her grandkids as she could, working on projects with them and never missing a school activity that they were a part of. During her down time, Sharon enjoyed keeping up with her beautiful garden. She was also quite the tv buff. She could spend hours watching her favorite westerns, Star Trek, and Survivor.

Those left to cherish her memory is her love, Gary Ballheim of Lexington; her children, Shamane (Eric) Bryson of Elwood, Mikka (Jason) Fowler of Clyde, Texas, Matthew Ballheim of Hastings, and Melissa Carvalho of Austin, Texas; sister, Phyllis Swore of Oregon, eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Savanna, son, Micheal and her sister, Joan Brown; and brothers, Dwayne Brown and Mike Brown.

Sharon Kay Fellows (1953-2024)

John Ira Pitkin, 72, of Cody, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the Callaway Good Life Center in Callaway, Nebraska.

John was born on December 29, 1951 in Arnold, Nebraska to Ira and Georgia (Hansen) Pitkin. He attended and graduated from Callaway High School in 1970. He then went on to further his education at Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte, NE, where he received his Associate’s Degree in Building Construction.

John was united in marriage to Deborah Jean Lehmkuhler on January 28, 1978 in North Platte, NE. In December of 1979, John &amp; Deb relocated to the Sandhills of Nebraska near Nenzel, with their 2 sons, Adam and Jordan, and later added two daughters, Brook and Meagen. They lived and worked on the Mustang Meadows ranch for 22 years. Then, in 2001, they moved into Cody, NE, where John worked on various ranches, including 18 years for Jim Heath.&nbsp;

He loved spending time on the house deck with his family, friends, and community members. He enjoyed supporting his kids at sporting events, loved a well-manicured lawn, and took pride in all the work he did. John was a staple of the community with his big heart and willingness to help anyone. He could be found helping with Circle C Days, the St. Mary’s Catholic church, especially the annual Bazaar fundraiser, and as a member of the Nenzel, Kilgore and Cody rural fire departments.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Deb Pitkin of Cody, NE, children: Adam Rivera of North Platte, NE, Jordan (Carissa) Pitkin of Cody, NE, Brook (Clifford) Cady of Merriman, NE, and Meagen (Derric) Krueger of Norden, NE; fourteen grandchildren: Sierra Rivera-McQuade and Abbey Rivera of Kearney, NE, Cooper, Ethan, Isaac and Lauren Pitkin all of Cody, NE, Jordan (Tarryn) Cady of Vetal, S.D., Bailey Cady of Casper, WY, Taylor Cady (Jordan Olsen) of Springview, NE, Colby Cady of Merriman, NE, Tristen, Dylan, Courtnie, and Caitlyn Krueger all of Norden, NE; two great-grandchildren, Oakley Cady and Nute Cady; three brothers, Steve Pitkin of Kearney, NE, Terry (Julie) Pitkin of Cedar Springs, MI, and Robert (Christie) Pitkin of Callaway, NE; sister, Linda (Donn) Black of Holdrege, NE; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents.

An informal Celebration of Life will be held at their home on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. MT at 402 W. Ohio St. in Cody.
