Richard C. Thies, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Meadowlark Pointe Assisted Living at the age of 92. Richard's journey began on April 11, 1932, in Hartington, Nebraska, he moved to Beatrice at a young age.

At 17, Richard answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Stationed on a destroyer ship off the coast of Korea and Japan, Richard displayed unwavering courage and dedication to his duty. He was married to Irene Schew in 1955.

In 1989 he married Glennis. After a fulfilling career spanning 37 years with the Nebraska Department of Roads, Richard retired with the title of engineer in 2001. Retirement brought new adventures as he and his wife traveled the country, attending Navy reunions and exploring new destinations. Together, they made cherished memories, camping and residing in their Florida home for 14 years before returning to Cozad in April 2024.

Along with Richard's service in the military, his accomplishments included being a skilled marksman, belonging to a rifle club, and leading a 4-H rifle club. He found joy in bowling, flying remote-controlled airplanes, and the artistry of wood carving.

Richard was a quiet-natured man and loved his family deeply. He was preceded in death by his infant great-granddaughter, Tassidi Chavez-Buerer, and stepdaughter, Amy Schultheiss. He is mourned by his surviving loved ones, his wife, Glennis Thies, his children Wendee Rush of Holdrege, NE, David Thies of Willis, TX, and Dana Chavez of Shelton, NE, along with stepson Tony (Jeri) Schultheiss of Eustis NE &nbsp;and stepdaughter Debbie (Tony) Janus of Eustis NE. Richard leaves a legacy of love that his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren will hold dear.

Richard Thies will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements and contributions but also for the warmth of his heart and the kindness of his soul. He touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving many treasured memories.

A celebration of Richard's life will be held at a later date. Rest in peace, dear Richard/Dad/Grandpa. Your memory will forever live on in our hearts.

Richard Claire Thies (1932-2024)

Nina Maxine Hallett was born September 28, 1922, to Myrtle Helen Hallett (Finch) and Charles Martin Hallett on a farm one mile east of Enders, Nebraska. The family moved to a farm two miles south of Enders in 1929. Nina attended grade school at Enders School. She graduated from Chase County High School in 1940. After graduation, Nina taught her first year of teaching in Arthur County, Nebraska. Then she returned to Chase County and taught Prairie Gem School in 1942-43. She taught District 2 -2 years, Dist. 8- one year, Dist. 1- 2 years, Dist. 4- 2 years, Dist. 1- (again) 3 years, Lamar School – 2 years, District 66 – 12 years. Then she taught at Chase County High School 17 ½ years – and retired in the spring of 1985 – having taught a total of 43 ½ consecutive years.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Nina received the Degree of Associate in Arts from McCook College in June, 1950. She received the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Education from Chadron State College on July 25, 1962. She received the Degree of Master of Science Education from Chadron State College on August 10, 1967.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Nina thoroughly enjoyed her years of teaching and relished many memories of former students and incidents, some were invigorating, others were somber. &nbsp;After retirement Nina enjoyed her home life, gardening, lawn work, flower beds, house remodeling, and various other activities.

&nbsp;Nina’s hobbies were piano and organ playing. She loved to do needle work, especially needlepoint and finished and framed many beautiful pieces of her work, using them for house décor.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Nina found Jesus as her Savior in the year 1940. She lived a life that exemplified the change Jesus wrought in her life. She taught Sunday School classes for many years, a task she thoroughly enjoyed.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Nina was devoted to her family whom she loved dearly. She cared for her mother until her mother’s death. She cared for her sister, Marjorie, and her brother, Charles, until the time of their deaths.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her father, mother, 3 half brothers Roy, Welman, and Paul Ouderkirk, her sister Marjorie Hallett, her brother Charles Hallett, and her youngest sister Delores Grosvenor (94 years old) of Caldwell, Idaho.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She is survived by her nephew Bob Stumbaugh, niece Eileen Schoonover and husband Mick, all of Caldwell, Idaho; Loretta Moyer and husband Lance of Ketchican, Alaska, and several great nieces and nephews.

&nbsp;A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. (MT) Friday, May 10, 2024 with visitation one hour prior to services at God’s Missionary Church in Wauneta, NE with pastor Gary Hunt officiating. &nbsp;Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Imperial, NE. &nbsp;

Gloria Jean (Eng) Smith, age 79 of Merna, NE passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2nd at the Callaway District Hospital, in Callaway, NE surrounded by her loved ones.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Funeral Services will be held on Monday, May 6th, at Govier Brothers Mortuary, at 10:30 am, burial will be in the Merna Cemetery. A lunch will follow the services at the Merna Community Center. Govier Brothers is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Anselmo-Merna Athletic Department. A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5th, from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, with family greeting friends from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Govier Brothers in Broken Bow, NE.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Gloria was born on October 2nd, 1944, to Georg and Minnie (Schomburg) Eng in Seward, Nebraska. Georg &amp; Minnie moved to Merna when Gloria was very young, establishing Eng’s Tavern. Georg &amp; Minnie later welcomed daughter, Connie, and son, Gary. Gloria attended Merna Schools.&nbsp;

On February 12, 1967, Gloria was united in marriage to Danny Smith. To this union 4 children were born: Cynthia, Devin, Stephanie, and Dustin. Danny &amp; Gloria lived in various places in Nebraska moving to North Platte in 1971, to Gering in 1979, and returning to Merna in 1984.&nbsp;

Gloria was once a volunteer at the hospital in Scottsbluff, a member of the Faith Lutheran Church of Gering, the Merna Lutheran Church, and a charter member of the Mixin' Mamas. Gloria enjoyed crafting, sewing, collecting LARGE rocks, and floral arranging. Gloria was very passionate about supporting any sport that her children or grandchildren participated in, traveling and attending many games around the country. She was most likely the loudest fan in the crowd!&nbsp;

Gloria worked several times at Becton-Dickenson over the years and was a homemaker, wife, and mother.&nbsp;

Gloria is survived by her husband of 57 years, Danny Smith of Merna, children Cynthia (Bobby Myers)Huhman, of Merna, Devin (Michelle) Smith of Seward, NE Stephanie McIntosh of Broken Bow, Dustin (Keri) Smith of Utah, and daughter-in-law Nancy Smith of Edgemont, SD. Gloria Smith (1944-2024)

Donald Glen Poe passed from this life on November 2, 2023 at the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial, NE. Don was born in Holyoke, CO during a blizzard on January 14, 1931 to Glen and Della Walgren Poe. He graduated from Amitie School, Phillips County High School (1949) and Northeastern Junior College (1951). He and Esther Douglass were married in Holyoke on March 14, 1953. For the first few years of marriage, Don worked road construction around Colorado, including building the Valley Highway through Denver, and drove semi-trucks for Harms Brothers out of Fleming hauling grain across the entire Midwest. In 1957, Don and Esther took over operation of, and raised their children on, the family farm southeast of Holyoke that was homesteaded by Don’s great-grandparents in the 1890s. They farmed dryland and ran Hereford cattle, along with hogs and sheep on occasion. During the summers, Don drove trucks for Harms Brothers, Wendell Ahnstedt, James Scholl, Bob Davis and others to supplement the farm income. In 1976, they put in irrigation sprinklers, and Don and his son Mike committed to farming and ranching full-time.

Despite a childhood injury that left him with only one fully functioning hand, Don was a very hard worker. People often commented that he accomplished more with one hand than most people could with two. He rarely purchased new farm equipment, preferring to buy used machinery that he could cut up then weld together into the implement that worked the way he wanted. He was the perfect father for his children Patti and Mike, playing games, building toys, and teaching them to do farm chores, ride horses and drive tractors and farm trucks from the age of 3. He supported them through many years of 4-H, FFA and a variety of school activities. Don felt sorry for kids who had to live in town, and over the years, several sets of parents left their children with Don to let them experience the freedom and responsibility of living on a farm. His grandchildren remember him rescuing trapped baby kittens and teaching them all about the farm. He was active in Phillips County and Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, state and local politics, and the Pleasant Valley Ballpark. He was an early member, and current member, of the Sandhills Volunteer Fire Department and was always ready to lend a hand or tools or supplies when a friend or neighbor was in need.

Don is survived by his son Mike, daughter Patti, son-in-law Barry Logan, and grandchildren Brian and Holly Logan. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dean and wife Esther.

A celebration of life for both Don and Esther will be held on Sunday, May 12th at the Champion Community Building in Champion, NE from 11:00 am to noon (mountain time).

Donald Glen Poe (1931-2023)

God called one of His angels home, for He knew her work on earth was done; now, her beautiful wings will shine brighter than the sun.

Our loving mother, Deborah Ann "Debbie" Santee, passed away on May 2, 2024, in North Platte, NE, at the age of 62. &nbsp;She was the heart and soul of our family. The unconditional love she had for her family now extends through generations.

Debbie was born February 23, 1962, in Wheatridge, CO, to Jim and Katy Storm. &nbsp;She had many wonderful memories growing up in Colorado with her parents and four siblings: Michael, Dave, Catt and Craig.

Debbie married her best friend Jerry Santee in 1979 and together they raised three wonderful children: Theresa, Melanie and Jamie. &nbsp;Each one brought her endless joy and laughter. &nbsp;She later became a doting grandmother who loved nothing more than spoiling her 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Debbie was the most wonderful homemaker and could make any space feel like home. Her favorite hobby was decorating for the holidays and making it so very special for her family. Debbie had such a love for music; you could always find her jamming to her favorite songs and playing her guitar and keyboard. She also had a love of gardening, shopping, baking and traveling. &nbsp;Debbie and Jerry loved traveling to Nashville, TN, where they attended the Grand Ole Opry several times, making many wonderful memories together. &nbsp;

Our mother will be remembered for her love of laughter, generosity and her compassionate heart. She had so much love in her heart to give that it extended to all God's creatures. Debbie was the most supportive wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will forever be remembered as "Super Nana" and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.&nbsp;

Debbie was proceeded in death by her parents, Katy and Jim Storm; brothers, Michael and Dave Peters; and her most beloved dog, Peaches.&nbsp;

She leaves behind her beloved husband, Jerry of Sutherland, and their daughters, Theresa Bunting (Ivory), Melanie Santee (Mohammed), and Jamie Sosa (Nick); her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her siblings, Catt Davies (Jeff) and Craig Storm; and many others who she loved like her own.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, at Odean Colonial Chapel with Holland Anderson officiating then burial will follow at the Sutherland Riverview Cemetery. &nbsp;Family asks that those in attendance wear color as we celebrate the life of our amazing wife, mother, grandmother and best friend.

The unconditional love she had for her family now extends through generations.Debbie was born February 23, 1962, in Wheatridge, CO, to Jim and Katy Storm. &nbsp;She had many wonderful memories growing up in Colorado with her parents and four siblings: Michael, Dave, Catt and Craig.Debbie married her best friend Jerry Santee in 1979 and together they raised three wonderful children: Theresa, Melanie and Jamie. &nbsp;Each one brought her endless joy and laughter. &nbsp;She later became a doting grandmother who loved nothing more than spoiling her 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.Debbie was the most wonderful homemaker and could make any space feel like home. Her favorite hobby was decorating for the holidays and making it so very special for her family. Debbie had such a love for music; you could always find her jamming to her favorite songs and playing her guitar and keyboard. She also had a love of gardening, shopping, baking and traveling. &nbsp;Debbie and Jerry loved traveling to Nashville, TN, where they attended the Grand Ole Opry several times, making many wonderful memories together. &nbsp;Our mother will be remembered for her love of laughter, generosity and her compassionate heart. She had so much love in her heart to give that it extended to all God's creatures. Debbie was the most supportive wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Debbie Santee (1962-2024)

Shelby Jean (Parks) Schwarz, 87, formerly of Lexington, went to heaven on Thursday, May 2, 2024, surrounded by family at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, NE.

Shelby was born at home, January 6, 1937, to Eulin E Parks and Neva G Crawford in Lexington, NE. &nbsp;She attended Lexington Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1955. &nbsp; Later in life she earned a Dietary Management Degree from Central Community College.

On August 17, 1957, Shelby was united in marriage to Keith R Schwarz at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington. &nbsp;After spending four years in the Navy, they returned to Lexington where they made their home and were blessed with six children: Rick, Sandra, Dan, Carma, Scott, and Russ. &nbsp;As her children grew, Shelby was active in and enjoyed 10 years as a 4-H leader with Shirely Beyl. &nbsp;She also touched many lives as a brownie and cub scout leader and was active in the Morton PTA. &nbsp;She worked for many years cooking for the kids at St Ann’s School cafeteria- however, because of her love for children, she stated it never really felt like a “job.”

After her divorce, Shelby moved to Kearney and worked 23 years at Good Samaritan Hospital, 14 of which were spent as a supervisor in the dietary department and nine years in medical records.

After retiring in 2009, Shelby moved back to Lexington and continued to be active at St Ann’s Catholic Church. &nbsp;She weathered many storms in her life with grace, attributing that to her deep faith in God and the motto “forgiveness heals the soul”. &nbsp;Shelby prayed daily for her family and held a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. &nbsp; She never met a baby that she didn’t love.

Those left to cherish her memory (and miss her cinnamon rolls) are her children, Rick (Amy) Schwarz, Sandra Schwarz (Dan Oliver), Dan (Berni) Schwarz, Carma (John) Anders, Scott (Stacie) Schwarz, and Russ (Gina) Schwarz. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2024, with family receiving guests from 5-7 p.m. at St Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington with Rosary to follow at 7 p.m.

Burial will be at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery in Lexington.

Shelby Jean Schwarz (1937-2024)

DeLynna Kay (Leitner) Schilz, age 45, of McCook, Nebraska passed away with her family by her side on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, Nebraska.

Dee was born July 6, 1978 in McCook to parents Dennis and Linda (Long) Leitner. She was one of three children born to this union. Dee graduated from Central High School in Park Hill, Missouri with the Class of 1996. &nbsp;Dee attended Missouri College in St Louis, Missouri. After graduation, Dee traveled to Nebraska to spend time with her grandparents, and she decided to stay. Shortly after, Dee met the love of her life, Josh Schilz.&nbsp;

On August 18, 2001, Dee married Josh Schilz in McCook. After ten years of waiting, a miracle came along. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Karley Jo. She was the focus of their lives.

Dee loved spending time with family at the lake camping, boating, and trail riding off-road razers with Josh, Karley and friends. Dee also loved her dogs, Roxy and Scooter.&nbsp;

Dee was preceded in death by her grandparents, Barrnett (Lola) Leitner and Wendell (Violet) Long.

Sandra Elizabeth Nelson was born May 27, 1937, in Wray, Colorado to John and Hilda (Mahoney) Vibber and departed this life on April 29, 2024, at the South Haven Living Center in Wahoo, Nebraska. &nbsp;She was 86 years old.

Sandra was united in marriage to Bernard Nelson in Raton, New Mexico, on April 6, 1955. &nbsp; They had one child, Jerry Lee. &nbsp; They resided on the Nelson family farm for 66 years. During many of those years she worked side by side with her husband, farming, driving truck and tending to the cattle. &nbsp;In 2021, they sold the farm and moved to Imperial, Nebraska.

Sandra had many talents. &nbsp;She was a seamstress and made many of her own clothes. &nbsp;She loved to quilt and was a member of the Crazy Quilters Quilt Guild. &nbsp; Many of her beautiful quilted creations have been handed down to family. &nbsp;She in later years took up knitting and made many prayer shawls for those with illnesses. &nbsp;She also made many lap blankets and baby blankets for friends and family. &nbsp;She was a member and very active in the United Methodist Church.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard; her son, Jerry; sisters Maxine Reckard and Dawala Hansen; and brothers, Larry Vibber and Jerry Vibber.&nbsp;

Survivors include: daughter-in-law, Debra Nelson (Randy) Crist of Ceresco, Nebraska; grandson, Zachary (Marian) Nelson of San Diego, California and granddaughter, Alyson Nelson of Wahoo, Nebraska; 3 great-grandchildren; Serenity Ray and Raelyn Nelson of Wahoo, Nebraska and Ilana Nelson of San Diego, California; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning, May 17, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Imperial, Nebraska with Pastor Loy officiating. &nbsp; Inurnment followed at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Imperial.

David T. Mullen of Tampa, Florida passed away January 1, 2024 from complications of renal cell carcinoma. &nbsp;

He was born June 7, 1975 to David B. and Jonna L. Mullen in Sacramento, California at Mather AFB Hospital. &nbsp;The family moved to North Platte in September 1975. &nbsp;He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School with the Class of 1994.

David worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, later moving to Austin, Texas and finally Tampa.

David is pre-deceased by his paternal grandparents, Gerlad (Beth) Mullen and his maternal grandparents, John (Nina) Bass.

David Truett Mullen (1975-2024)

Karen (Mawhinney) Buckley, 74, of Arnold, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 30, in her home. A mother of seven, grandmother of 26, and great-grandmother of 15, Karen leaves behind a large loving family, including her devoted and loving husband of 36 years, Don.&nbsp;

Born in Winner, SD, in August 1949, Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Lou Ann (Olmsted) &amp; Buddy Haley, and Lee &amp; Anne Mawhinney, a daughter, Robin Clay, and her first husband, Dennis Thomas.

She is survived by her husband Don of Arnold – children Donnell Buckley of Lincoln, NE Denise Thomas of Burwell, NE, Lisa (Dave) Geil of Casper, WY, LuRee (Tom) Keefover of Linwood, KS, Keith (Stephanie) Thomas of Queen Creek, AZ, Kory (Julie) Thomas of Kalamazoo, MI, grandchildren – Josh Benne, Tom (Amanda) Clay, Tyler (Alyssa) Clay, Kaylynn Buckley, Brianna (Taylor) Eagan, Jake (Manuela) Benne, Jared Benne, DJ (Miranda) Buckley, Jake (Shayla) Geil, Shelby Johnson, Joe Geil, Lake Reikofski, Randii Reikofski, Drew Thomas, Sage Keefover, Justin Thomas, Zane Keefover, Trey Keefover, Jase Keefover, Greyson Thomas, Hayden Thomas, and 15 amazing great-grandchildren, as well as two sisters – Tami (Mel) Denio and Michelle (Larry) Littau, and two brothers – Clayton (A) Haley and Kevin (Kim) Haley.

Karen and Don have traveled the country, from coast to coast, before settling back into their Midwestern roots in Arnold.

Karen’s love for children was always so evident, and she never missed a grand or great-grandchild's birthday. And when none of her own grandkids were around, she was known to hand out popsicles and cookies to the neighborhood kids walking down the street because their smiles brought her so much joy.

Services in honor of Karen’s wonderful life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 4th, 2024, at the Arnold Community Center in Arnold, NE where we’ll follow a memorial with a reception with refreshments and conversation. Dwight Alan Hatch, age 80, of Ogallala, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2024 at his home, surrounded by family.

Dwight was born on May 16, 1943 in Stratton, Nebraska to Kelham and Mildred Hatch. He will be remembered as a skilled educator, compassionate counselor, and devoted foster parent, who touched countless lives with his compassionate ear and wise counsel. He left an indelible mark on his family and generations of learners.

Dwight cherished spending time with family and friends, and his presence brought joy to all who knew him. He enjoyed family gatherings, expressing his creative outlet in woodworking, camping and fishing, and a love of classic cars and motorcycles. Dwight was always known for his calm demeanor and sage advice. He was the consummate straight man in his 62-year partnership with his wife, Bea. He was the Dean Martin to her Jerry Lewis, the George to her Gracie.

Born with a natural gift for teaching and a heart overflowing with empathy, he brought passion and creativity into the classroom, instilling not only knowledge but a deep sense of curiosity in his students. Beyond the confines of the classroom, Dwight extended his caring nature to serve as a counselor and foster parent, forever changing the trajectory of many lives for the better. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Linda grew up in North Platte and graduated from NPPS in 1971. &nbsp;She worked at many different places around town including: Tuckers, Arctic Circle, Nebraskan Grocery, Cedar Bowl Snack Bar, Little Kings and 7-11. &nbsp;Linda then went to work for Walmart, unloading trucks for 20 years until retiring in 2015. &nbsp;

Linda enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing projects, bowling and dogsitting Phoebe and Jemma. &nbsp;She especially loved spending time out at the lake with family and friends. &nbsp;When she was young, she participated in 4-H and sang in junior and high school choirs.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Dean and Bessie, brother, Gary, and nephew, Ian Nichelson.

Survivors include her brother, Mark Nichelson (Sharon) and sister-in-law, DiAnn Nichelson of North Platte; nephew, Billy (Ashley) Nichelson; and great-niece, Mila Nichelson.

Calvin was born on November 13, 1931, northeast of Broken Bow, NE to Wayne and Maude (Loyd) Evans. Calvin served over 2 years in the Marine Corps. Upon returning home Calvin worked construction for several years. In 1957 he married Frances Hoblyn and to that union, 3 children were born. Wade, Kent, and Tami were raised on their farm northeast of Mason City where they raised cattle, had horses and a wide variety of pets.

&nbsp;Calvin is survived by his wife of 67 years Frances (Hoblyn), two sons, Wade (Susan) Evans of Kearney, Kent (Sue) of Mason City, and a daughter Tami (Jim Boyles) of Mason City; grandchildren Darcie Campbell (Mark), Katie McCarthy (Jake), Janie Evans, and Jade Evans; great-grandchildren Cruz, Ryan, Cameron, Annie, and Cash.

Calvin Evans (1931-2024)

Marilyn Roberta (Talbot) Shinn passed away on April 29, 2024, at the age of 90, at Brookstone View in Broken Bow, Nebraska, surrounded by members of her family.

Marilyn was born January 22, 1934, in Broken Bow, Nebraska to Orin H. and Bertini (Joyner) Talbot. She grew up with three brothers: Charles, Tom, and Ted. Upon Graduation from Broken Bow High School in 1952 (she was voted by her class as “most likely to win the Indianapolis 500”), Marilyn attended the Colorado Women’s College in Denver Colorado and then finished her schooling at the University of Nebraska where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. Marilyn taught in the Broken Bow School system for one year before getting married and moving to the Sandhills.

It was on a blind date that Marilyn met the love of her life, Richard F. Shinn. They were married on September 3, 1955, and to that union four boys were born who enjoyed growing up in the Sandhills along the Middle Loup River. She worked side-by-side with Richard in growing their business, Shinn Turkeys, Inc. She was also a great sport and hung right in there with the adventurous boys who never failed to keep her life “interesting.” Her patience was plentiful and so were the stories of their escapades. She should have authored a book.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents Orin and Bertini (Joyner) Talbot, brother Charles Talbot, brother Thomas Talbot, great-grandson Marlowe Shinn and several angel great grandbabies.

Jeremy was raised and attended school in Merna. The family later moved to Berwyn, where Jeremy attended school in Broken Bow, later receiving his GED, then receiving a degree in Welding. Jeremy worked in Construction, building homes for Habitat for Humanity in Grand Island, NE, and then worked as a fabricator at Dewey Welding in Merna. Jeremy was supportive of anyone who needed help.

Jeremy enjoyed 4-H, camping, fishing, hunting, pickup trucks, carpentry work, mechanical work, and cutting wood with his family. Family was important to him. He was proud of his own Black Angus bull and cows.

Jeremy Burnett (1977-2024)

It is with heavy hearts we announce that Billie Louise Hayes, passed away on April 26, 2024, in North Platte, NE, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and hard work.&nbsp;

Born on September 1, 1960, in Imperial, NE, to Glen and Billie Hayes, Billie's early years were marked by a strong sense of community and dedication to helping others. She graduated from Chase County Schools in 1978 and soon after began her career at Imperial Manor in 1983. Her unwavering commitment to excellence led her to retire as the Environmental Services Supervisor in March after four decades of service.&nbsp;

Billie was not only known for her professional achievements but also for her love of hobbies such as crocheting, gardening, and playing board games and card games with her family. She was a devoted supporter of her loved ones, always ready to lend an ear or offer advice. In addition to her career at Imperial Manor, Billie also served as a volunteer EMT for 41 years and shared her knowledge by teaching EMS classes throughout Southwest Nebraska and the panhandle for over 29 years. &nbsp;Billie was also recently awarded the Imperial Citizen of the Year Award for calendar year 2023 for her outstanding commitment to serving her community throughout her life. &nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>It is with heavy hearts we announce that Billie Louise Hayes, passed away on April 26, 2024, in North Platte, NE, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and hard work.&nbsp;Born on September 1, 1960, in Imperial, NE, to Glen and Billie Hayes, Billie's early years were marked by a strong sense of community and dedication to helping others. She graduated from Chase County Schools in 1978 and soon after began her career at Imperial Manor in 1983. Her unwavering commitment to excellence led her to retire as the Environmental Services Supervisor in March after four decades of service.&nbsp;Billie was not only known for her professional achievements but also for her love of hobbies such as crocheting, gardening, and playing board games and card games with her family. She was a devoted supporter of her loved ones, always ready to lend an ear or offer advice. Billie Louise Hayes (1960-2024)

Delmar Dean VanCura, 81 of Ogallala, passed away Monday, April 29th, 2024 at Maples of Centennial in North Platte, NE, surrounded by family. Delmar was born April 19th, 1943 to Henry &amp; Lola (Lee) VanCura. Delmar attended Ogallala Public Schools and was a life long Ogallala resident.

Delmar and Deanna Casey were married in Oshkosh, NE on August 12th, 1969. This marriage continued for the next 53 years. Delmar worked for various employers over the years, including the Hi-Line Co-Op in Grant, City of Ogallala, Best Western, and Walmart all of Ogallala. Delmar enjoyed fishing, garage selling, camping, auctions, gambling with his wife, and most importantly - being Santa.

Delmar is survived by 4 of his children, Daniel VanCura, AJ Reimers, Leanne VanCura, and Lori Watts, 14 Grandchildren, and 26 Great Grandchildren. Delmar is preceded in death by his wife, Deanna VanCura, parents, son, Andrew VanCura, and 1 Grandson.

Delmar Dean VanCura (1943-2024)

Orville Dean Thompson Jr. known as Dean peacefully entered his heavenly home on April 27, 2024, from Indian Hills Manor, Ogallala, NE, where he had been tenderly cared for since October, 2023, when he could no longer live on his beloved ranch of 77 years.

Dean was born on February 15, 1926, to Orville Dean Thompson and Lena F. (Kruger) Thompson and came home to their ranch in McPherson County, joining his older sister Evelyn. The most important event of his life came at 11 years of age when he gave his life to his Lord Jesus and was baptized in Center Valley Lake. He only left the ranches of Arthur and McPherson County for his 18-month service to the nation in the Philippines and Japan during the end of World War II. The second most important event of his life occurred when he married Doris Jean Tiffany on August 24, 1947, and they set out on their life together on the ranch.

Besides ranching, Dean's life was centered on his service to God through the churches of Center Valley and Arthur Baptist Churches and to the surrounding communities. This included short-term mission assignments in Haiti and Bacone College in OK, serving as president of the American Baptist Men of NE and in various other roles within the American Baptist USA denomination, and contributions within the Gideons International. He fulfilled his community duties by serving as County Commissioner and on various school boards and Farm Bureau offices. His greatest ranch enjoyment was haying, and he took great pride in all his building projects throughout the community. Dean's creativity blessed many with his poetry, his book, Ninety Years on Short Grass and Sand, his article writing in the local papers and his woodworking projects.

Dean is survived by his children, Barbara Jean (Pat) Golden Perone; Sandra Deanne (Chuck) John; Brian Dean (Jerri); grandchildren Brian (Karen) Perone; Laura Golden; Thomas (Stacey) Perone; Jennifer (Warren) Mertz; Tiffany (Matthew Quinn) John; Bethanie (Kyle Reinhard) John; Drew Jetter; great-grandchildren Anna Perone, Logan Perone, Colin Perone, and Nathan Perone; sisters-in-law Helen Thompson and Doris Elaine Tiffany; many nieces, nephews and cousins, and scores of friends and neighbors. Orville "Dean" Thompson (1926-2024)

Shirley&nbsp;Frost&nbsp;Jeske passed away at her home in North Platte, NE, on April 27, 2024, at the age of 87.

Shirley, the daughter of Alfred and Bessie Frost, was born July 17, 1936, at Berea, NE. &nbsp;She grew up in Alliance and graduated from high school there in 1954.

On May 19, 1955, Shirley married Paul Jeske at Alliance. &nbsp;The couple moved to Texas where they lived in three different homes around Alamo then returned to Nebraska and lived in Bingham, south of Lakeside, Marsland, Scotia, Lewellen and finally North Platte in 1969. &nbsp;Shirley and Paul had four children and enjoyed 62 years of marriage.

Shirley went to nurse's training and graduated in 1976 then worked at Great Plains Health in Labor/Delivery, OB and GYN, and the Nurseries. &nbsp;she later worked with the business office and was a PBX operator. &nbsp;After working for 25 years, Shirley retired. &nbsp;

She enjoyed reading and took up bowling after retiring. &nbsp;She was a member of a ladies bowling group and belonged to a circle at the Lutheran Church. &nbsp;Shirley looked forward to coffee with her friends and spending time with her children and grandchildren. &nbsp;She loved her family and was a loving nurse to all her children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents, Alfred and Bessie Frost; brothers, Neil and Kenneth Frost; and her sister, Vera Koch.

Shirley leaves behind her children, Paula England (Kurt) of Pensacola, FL, Lynnette Prowett (Dave) of Gillette, WY, Rhonda Jeske of North Platte and Stephen Jeske (Judy) of Oshkosh; grandchildren, Holly, Heidi, Damon, Mandy, Julie, Jesse, Michele and Stephanie; 18 great-grandchildren and a great great-grandson; her brothers-in-law, Dale Jeske and Franklin McClellen; sister-in-law, Delores Jeske; and other family.

Jerry enjoyed going fishing, camping, doing carpentry work, and working on cars. &nbsp;

He is survived by his wife Carla of Sargent, his children: Radicese Williams of Loveland, CO, Samantha (Joseph) Myers of Sargent, Taylor Williams of Sargent, Natasha Williams of Grand Island, Jax Williams of Sargent, and Wyatt Williams of Sargent. &nbsp;He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, his mother Peggy Dickinson of Ohio, a sister Renae Sheets of Ohio, and a brother Jeff Williams of Washington. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his father. &nbsp;

Jerry Williams (1968-2024)

&nbsp; Steven John Bishop, 76, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024, at Lexington Regional Health Center in Lexington.

He was born on October 3, 1947, in Grand Island, Nebraska, to Ralph and Irene (Rathbun) Bishop. He attended Grand Island Public Schools and later graduated from Grand Island High School. After graduating, Steve joined the United States Navy where he proudly served his country. Steve later joined the Union Pacific Railroad where he worked as an engineer for over 40 years before retiring. While living in North Platte, he met the love of his life, Candace Clark. Together, they made their home in Lexington, Nebraska in 2004.

Steve could be loud and gruff, but he was also known to be incredibly generous and such a good man. He had a big heart and deeply loved his family, especially his grandkids and great grandkids. He held a special place in his heart for animals as well, especially his beloved cat, Eric. Traveling was a shared joy he had with his wife, Candace, and spent a lot of time at Estes Park. In his younger years, Steve liked to stay active and as he got older, you would often find him walking on his treadmill for hours or biking around town. In his free time, he enjoyed reading non-fiction and history books.

&nbsp;Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Candace Bishop of Lexington; children, Ron (Carolyn) Bishop of Texas, and Angela (Mike) Martinson of Omaha; stepchildren, Brandy Elsten of North Platte, Christopher Elsten of North Platte, Jannelle Schilmoeller of North Platte, and Daniel Elsten of Hastings; sixteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; brother, Stan (Jane) Bishop of Phoenix, Arizona; sisters, Sharon of Kearney and Sue Bishop of Omaha; sisters-in-law, Janice (Steve) Steffenson of Columbus and Lauretta (Dennis) Shaver of Sioux City, Iowa; brother-in-law, Tim (Nancy) Clark of Columbus, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Together, they made their home in Lexington, Nebraska in 2004.Steve could be loud and gruff, but he was also known to be incredibly generous and such a good man. He had a big heart and deeply loved his family, especially his grandkids and great grandkids. He held a special place in his heart for animals as well, especially his beloved cat, Eric. Traveling was a shared joy he had with his wife, Candace, and spent a lot of time at Estes Park. In his younger years, Steve liked to stay active and as he got older, you would often find him walking on his treadmill for hours or biking around town. In his free time, he enjoyed reading non-fiction and history books.&nbsp;Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Candace Bishop of Lexington; children, Ron (Carolyn) Bishop of Texas, and Angela (Mike) Martinson of Omaha; stepchildren, Brandy Elsten of North Platte, Christopher Elsten of North Platte, Jannelle Schilmoeller of North Platte, and Daniel Elsten of Hastings; sixteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; brother, Stan (Jane) Bishop of Phoenix, Arizona; sisters, Sharon of Kearney and Sue Bishop of Omaha; sisters-in-law, Janice (Steve) Steffenson of Columbus and Lauretta (Dennis) Shaver of Sioux City, Iowa; brother-in-law, Tim (Nancy) Clark of Columbus, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, May 20, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington with Pastor Rex Adams, officiating. Steven Jon Bishop (1947-2024)

Wyona Violet Shackelford, age 90, of Trenton, Nebraska, passed away on Wednesday, April 24th, 2024, at Community Hospital in McCook with family by her side. She was born in Culbertson, NE on March 3, 1934, to Clyde and Irene (Isaac) Matson. Wyona attended and graduated from Trenton High School in 1952. While in high school she was a waitress at the Trenton Café. That is where she met the love of her life, Dean Shackelford. On July 8, 1953, Wyona &amp; Dean were united in marriage at the Hitchcock County Courthouse in Trenton. Shortly after they married, Dean was drafted into the Army and stationed in Germany. At age 19, Wyona went to New York to board a passenger ship and go to Germany to be with her husband. While at sea the ship she was on was hit by a Freightliner. The larger ship caused extensive damage to the passenger ship. The passenger ship had to be towed back to port in New York leaving Wyona stranded alone in New York for a week while repairs were made. Dean could not be notified until the ship made port back in New York.

Wyona was a servant for the Lord. She was a cancer survivor having taken many chemotherapy treatments in Denver in the 1980's. She said the way she made it through the treatments was with Dean holding one of her hands and Jesus holding her other hand. She was a lifetime active member of the Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's group, sang in the Church Choir, held many positions on the Church Council Board, and hosted Bible Study in her home. She enjoyed sewing and made several outfits for her kids as they were growing up. She embroidered, made crafts, and painted ceramics, some of which she did together with her Mom. She was an amazing cook. You never went home hungry when you left her home. She belonged to a Couple's Card Club and MNO (Mothers Night Out) Women's Group. Wyona had a green thumb.She could make anything grow. Wyona had a large vegetable garden and beautiful flower beds. She always shared produce and flowers that she had raised. When her children were young, her &amp; Dean often took the family to the lake after church on Sunday's where they ate a picnic lunch, then went out on the water on the pontoon for the afternoon. Dean &amp; Wyona also started a family tradition of taking the family to the Nebraska State Fair. That has continued to be a fun tradition for the family even to this day. &nbsp;

Wyona loved her family dearly. She had a way of making each one of her family members feel special, and always made sure they knew how much she loved them.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Irene Matson; husband, Dean Shackelford; son, Jerry Shackelford; son-in-law, Spencer Sydow; great grandson, Jared Chitwood; sister and brother-in-law, Neioma &amp; Alan Meguire; Brother, Gaylord Matson; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Virgil &amp; Ruth Shackelford; sister-in-law and her husband, Shirley &amp; Hank Stecker; sister-in-law and her husband, Patricia &amp; Burdette Melchert..

Wyona is survived by four daughters: Barbara Sydow of Stratton, NE; Cynthia (Dave) Engel of Silver Creek; NE; Diane Riggs of Trenton, NE; Nancy (John) Thomas of Aurora, NE; nine grandchildren: Brian (Melissa) Sydow, Jennifer (Brad) Fries, Kody (Alyssa O'Dean) Sydow, Laurie (Ryan Matteson) Poppert, Tyrel (Lacy) Riggs, Orrin (Terra) Riggs, Nathaniel (Emma Smith) Chitwood, Michael (Hannah Luber) Chitwood, John Andrew (Aleta) Thomas, 20 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren. Siblings: Gloria (Ron) Bricker of Grand Junction, CO; Joe (Thelma) Matson of McCook: sister-in-law, Marilyn Matson of Oshkosh, NE; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Duane &amp; Grace Shackelford of Lincoln, NE; numerous nieces &amp; nephews, and a host of friends. &nbsp;
