Wesley Leon Holland, 80, of Grant (former longtime Lemoyne resident), passed away on April 8, 2024, at his home.

Wes was born on April 24, 1943, to Wesley Lafayette Holland and Della Maxine Shaffer in Denver, CO. Wesley attended high school in Denver and then entered the US Army shortly after. He later married Maria Trujillo, and together they adopted a son, Steven Holland. Later on, they also adopted their granddaughter, Nichole Ross.

The family made their home in Denver, CO, where Wes worked in telecommunications. In 1974, they relocated to a house they built north of Lake McConaughy.

Wes was a skilled builder and a tinkerer. He was also a father figure, a loving husband, and a valued member of his community. He served as a charter member of the Keystone Lemoyne Fire and Rescue. He served the organization from 1978 to 1990, four of those years as treasurer. He also served on the Ogallala Rural Fire District board for 14 years. Both organizations will miss his valuable experience.

Wes was also a longtime member of the Martin Bay Community Church, where he served on the board for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Maria Holland; son, Steven Holland; and three siblings. He is survived by his granddaughter, Nichole Ross and her husband Benjamin Ross of Grant; his brother, Larry Holland and his wife Diane Holland of Denver, CO; and many other relatives and friends.

Wesley Holland (1943-2024)

Ronald LeRoy Evans, 70, of rural Lemoyne, passed away on April 12, 2024 at the Perkins County Hospital in Grant, Nebraska.&nbsp; Ronnie, as he was known in his early years, was born in Denver, Colorado to LeRoy Evan Evans and Carol Alice Schou Evans on August 14, 1953.&nbsp; He and big brother, Roger, grew up on the family homestead north of Elizabeth which was known for the Uncle Sam mailbox at the highway and big red barn and silo which stands to this day.&nbsp; He attended all 12 years of schooling in the small town of Elizabeth Colorado and graduated with 9 other seniors in 1971.&nbsp; He worked at his family’s dairy and beef cattle operation while in high school helping to milk cows before and after school.&nbsp; He drove a country school bus after graduating and worked part-time for the local veterinarian learning many minor surgical procedures and treatments for beef cattle ailments.&nbsp; He also had his own business artificially inseminating and pregnancy-checking cows in several counties both in Elbert County and later in Keith and Garden County, Nebraska.

In 1984, the Evans family felt Denver overtaking their cattle pastures and chose to re-locate their cowherd, looking at several different ranches in Wyoming, Montana, and Nebraska before settling on a ranch on the north shore of Lake McConaughy.

Ron was an avid supporter of 4-H and county fairs and served on the Elbert County Fair Board for several years.&nbsp; This volunteerism is where he met and fell in love with the local Extension Agent.&nbsp; How many people can say their first date was to the junk yard after the fairground clean-up day?&nbsp; Ron and Melissa Miller were married in a quiet ceremony at the Julesburg Courthouse on October 18, 1985 and settled in the ranch house north of Lemoyne where Ron had moved the previous year.&nbsp;&nbsp; To this union two children, Lacey Jane and Ridge Lee were born and raised on the family ranch.&nbsp;

Ron was an excellent livestock evaluator and selected A.I. sires to produce champion show steers in their own herd.&nbsp; The ranch competed at the National Western Stock Show and won Grand Champion Stocker Feeders with a set of Hereford show steers in 1989, against all other breeds and great odds.&nbsp;&nbsp; The ranch sold show steers to several distant states and maintain close relationships with those exhibitor’s families to this day. &nbsp;He was most proud of the year one of the ranch’s Hereford steers won the Arizona National Livestock Show.&nbsp; &nbsp;Lacey and Ridge loved to ride with their dad during calving season because the rule was “whomever claims the calf first, gets to show it at the county fair as a Stocker Feeder and the next year as a Market Steer”.&nbsp; For several years it was tough keeping track of the lists for Ridge and Lacey.&nbsp; They were each able to win Grand Champion steer at the Keith County Fair with homegrown steers.

When Lacey and Ridge were old enough for 4-H, he became involved in the Keith County Ag Society and volunteered for the 4-H program.&nbsp; He was honored with the “Friend of 4-H” award in 2008 and served as scale master and breed classifier for the Keith County Fair for several years until this past January. &nbsp;&nbsp;He also served on the National Western Stock Show Feeder Calf Committee with his brother, Roger.&nbsp; The Evans Family was honored with a plaque on the NWSS Hall of Fame in the Livestock Sale Pavilion for their many years of competing at the Stock Show.&nbsp;

Ron loved to hang out at the local sale barn, “monitoring the market”, while visiting with the regular order buyers and sandhill ranchers marketing their calves.&nbsp; Ron was a magnet for small children who were drawn in by his sense of humor and big heart.&nbsp; He loved giving nick names to those around him, and it was common knowledge, “If he didn’t tease you, he didn’t like you.”&nbsp; His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he loved teaching them to drive in the pastures.

He was preceded in death by his mother Carol Evans and brother Roger Evans.&nbsp;

Ron is survived by his wife, Melissa; one daughter Lacey (Mitch) Williams of Elm Creek, one son Ridge (Taylor) Evans of Lemoyne; father LeRoy (Sue) Evans of Elizabeth, Colorado; one granddaughter Canyon Evans of Lemoyne, four grandsons Karder, Knox and Kowen Williams of Elm Creek and Ryatt Evans of Lemoyne; &nbsp;Mother-in-Law Marilyn Miller of Paoli Colorado; Sisters-in-Law Diane Evans of Castle Rock Colorado and Melinda Groshans of Paoli Colorado,&nbsp; Brothers-in-Law Mitchel (Julie) Miller of Parker Colorado and Michael (Marlene) Miller of Holyoke Colorado, and several very special aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.&nbsp;

Ron passed away only eight days after checking calving pastures in his Polaris Ranger due to complications from a very rare, aggressive cancer.&nbsp; He was cared for with compassion and love by the staff at Perkins County Hospital in Grant during those eight days.&nbsp;

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 20th,2024&nbsp; at 11:00 a.m. MT, at Figure Four Traditions on the Historic Haythorn Ranch with Pastor Matt Waitley officiating.&nbsp; Cremation was chosen and Ron’s cremains will be scattered into the winds on the family ranch at a later date. &nbsp;

Ronald L. Evans (1953-2024)

Angel&nbsp;Quinonez died April 12, 2024, at Great Plains Health in North Platte, Nebraska, at age 66.

Angel was born October 1, 1957, to Guadalupe and Irene Quinonez in Mexico. &nbsp;He grew up in Ciudad Juarez then moved to North Platte when he was a teenager. &nbsp;Angel worked at the local packing plant for many years. &nbsp;

On August 26, 2011, Angel married Maria "Carmen" Martinez and they made their home in North Platte. &nbsp;They were together until Carmen died in 2020.

Angel loved his dog, Shadow, and was supportive and always willing to help his family and others when they need it. Family was most important to Angel, he was their hero. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and four siblings.

Survivors include his siblings and their spouses, Mario and Anna Quinonez of North Platte, Jorge and Dorothy Carmona of Sutherland and Daniel and Mary Quinonez, Noe and Carina Carmona and Lorena and Raul Burciaga of Texas; many nieces, nephews and other family.

Family and friends gathered for a final viewing and memorial service in remembrance of Angel at noon on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.

Loretta Lee Griffith, 81, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, April 11th, 2024, in Broken Bow, Nebraska while surrounded by family. She had been battling complications from parathyroid cancer for many years.

Loretta was born January 18th, 1943, to Wesley “Max” and Velma (Waggoner) Stewart at her grandparents’ home in Comstock, Nebraska. Loretta and her younger sister Meredith grew up on their parents’ farm seven miles west of Sargent, Nebraska. Loretta attended country school through 8th&nbsp;grade and then lived with her grandma Rilla in Sargent while she attended high school. She graduated from Sargent High School in 1961.

After high school she attended Grand Island Business School where she graduated in 1962. She then returned to Sargent where she worked in a doctor’s office until 1964.

Loretta married Walter Earl Griffith in Sargent on July 12th, 1964, and then moved to Broken Bow. Both Loretta and Walter accepted Christ as their personal savior within the first year of their marriage. Loretta worked at the Custer County Social Service office until Ken was born in 1965. &nbsp;Then she quit her job to stay home and raise her family. Walt and Loretta had five children: Ken, Mark, Tom, Stephen, and Tricia. Stephen passed away shortly after he was born.

Walt and Loretta moved their young family from Broken Bow to Berwyn, then to Gates where they farmed and raised cattle. &nbsp;Eventually they moved back to Broken Bow where all the kids graduated from high school.

Over the years Loretta taught Sunday school and helped disciple youth in AWANA at the Berean Church in Broken Bow. She worked in the USDA Farm Service Agency office in Broken Bow for nearly 25 years. She made many friends in the FSA office as well as many area farmers she helped along the way.

Walt and Loretta had been married for 56 years when Walt passed away in 2020.

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, mom and dad, son Stephen, father-in-law and mother-in-law.

Loretta is survived by: &nbsp;Children - Kenneth Griffith (Janet) of Broken Bow, Mark Griffith (Sonya) of Kearney, Thomas Griffith (Heather) of Merna, and Tricia Sabin (Jeff) of Ashland; Sister - Meredith Orthman (Bill) of Lexington; Grandchildren – Kathrine Obradovich (C.J.) of Kearney, Cody Griffith (Courtney) of Ansley, Jacob Griffith (Megan) of Kearney, Ethan Griffith (Elizabeth) of Arnold, Jobeth Winkelman (Brian) of Callaway, Elizabeth Griffith of Omaha, Amanda Field (Estin) of Memphis, TN, Nathan Sabin of Lincoln, Victoria Holt (Gage) of Holdrege, Jentry Griffith of Arnold, and Josiah Griffith of Merna. Loretta also leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

She made many friends in the FSA office as well as many area farmers she helped along the way.Walt and Loretta had been married for 56 years when Walt passed away in 2020.Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, mom and dad, son Stephen, father-in-law and mother-in-law.Loretta is survived by: &nbsp;Children - Kenneth Griffith (Janet) of Broken Bow, Mark Griffith (Sonya) of Kearney, Thomas Griffith (Heather) of Merna, and Tricia Sabin (Jeff) of Ashland; Sister - Meredith Orthman (Bill) of Lexington; Grandchildren – Kathrine Obradovich (C.J.) of Kearney, Cody Griffith (Courtney) of Ansley, Jacob Griffith (Megan) of Kearney, Ethan Griffith (Elizabeth) of Arnold, Jobeth Winkelman (Brian) of Callaway, Elizabeth Griffith of Omaha, Amanda Field (Estin) of Memphis, TN, Nathan Sabin of Lincoln, Victoria Holt (Gage) of Holdrege, Jentry Griffith of Arnold, and Josiah Griffith of Merna. Loretta also leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

Loretta Griffith (1943-2024)

Longtime former Lexington resident, Irene Ruth (Biltoft) Lahm, 94, was called home Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Bryan East Medical Center. Irene was born Friday, December 13, 1929, in Ruskin, Nebraska to James and Olive (Young) Biltoft.

Irene grew up on a farm helping with chores, kitchen duties and housework. Her favorite memory was riding horses. At the age of three the family home burned down. That event and the depression taught her the value of frugality. She served as the captain of her high school volleyball team and graduated from Ruskin High School in 1947.

On September 20, 1948, Irene married Don Lahm in Cozad where they lived until 1952 when they moved to Lexington. Four children were born to this union: Ruby Irene (Iszler), Rita Ilene (Beck), Dennis Edward and Dona Ruth (Sabby).

Irene was a dedicated mother and homemaker and also worked at JM Donalds department store. &nbsp;After sewing her two daughters’ wedding dresses people learned of her talent as a seamstress. &nbsp;She did alterations for clothing stores in Lexington and made many friends by taking in alterations. Irene treated each job as an urgency getting them in and out quickly. She helped Don with his auctioneer business by cataloging and sprucing up items for the sale. Irene never flustered when Don would call and say I’m bring an implement customer home for lunch. She instilled in her kids the value of hard work, saving and cleanliness. Another talent Irene had was pie making. It was fun to see how many pies she would make for a family gathering and family could always count on strawberry pretzel salad to be part of the meal. If she came to visit, she would surely bring you toilet paper. &nbsp; Everybody uses toilet paper!

Irene and Don celebrated 64 years of marriage. When Don’s health declined, Irene was his faithful, loving caregiver until his death in 2013. Following Don’s death, Irene decided to sell the family home and moved to Legend Oaks. &nbsp;She enjoyed playing cards at the Lexington Grand Generation Center, participating in numerous clubs, doing jigsaw puzzles and word finds, and watching game shows. She kept her mind sharp throughout it all.

In October 2023, Irene moved to Nebraska City to live in Rita and David’s carriage house. They were wonderful, dedicated caregivers getting her to appointments, sharing meals and tending to household chores. &nbsp;She loved their beautiful gardens and would pull weeds while sitting on her walker whenever she could. She was looking forward to Spring and Summer and being outside.

Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Don, two brothers, three sisters, son, Dennis, daughter, Ruby, grandchildren Melissa Major and John Beck and great granddaughter Maddie Everitt.

Irene is survived by daughters, Rita (David) Beck and Dona (Larry) Sabby, grandchildren Shelly (Dustin) Everitt, Kevin (Kammi) Beck, Kirk (Robin) Major, Jessica (Mark) Lamphear, Sarah (Ryan) Major and eight greatgrandchildren.

Irene Ruth Lahm (1929-2024)

Jessie C. McCormick, a longtime North Platte resident who dedicated her life to her family, friends and community in Lincoln County, died on April 11, 2024. She was 90.

Jessie was born Aug. 19, 1933, in Loup City, Nebraska, to A. R. Rex and Helen (Fisher) Hoppie. She moved with her family to North Platte in 1945 and graduated from North Platte High School in 1951.

She went to work at the North Platte Municipal Light &amp; Water Department, where she met her future husband, William H. "Bill" McCormick. The two married on May 29, 1954, in North Platte, where they raised two daughters, Patricia and Carol.

Jessie also was known for being a dedicated caregiver: She took care of her mother, Helen, who lived with the family for 11 years. She balanced this, for several years, with caregiving for her mother-in-law, Margaret, and raising her daughters.

Jessie also was an accomplished businesswoman. She worked as a bookkeeper-secretary at First United Methodist Church for 18 years. In 1978, she and Bill established Lazy K Angus by purchasing half interest in 42 registered Angus cows. For 30 years, they raised purebred seedstock cattle, which they sold throughout the area and Nebraska, growing their herd to as large as 130. Jessie kept the business's books and enjoyed working alongside Bill in all their endeavors.

Jessie was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America and a former member of Area 8 Nebraska Cattlewomen. She was very generous with her time volunteering at her church, the Bargain Bin and at the Golden Spike Tower, among other places.

Jessie's family will remember her most for being loving, caring, warm and supportive. They will also remember her quick-witted vocabulary and sarcasm, honed over thousands of crossword puzzles.

In addition to her parents, Jessie was preceded in death by her brother Rex Hoppie and his wife Norma of Parkersburg, West Virginia; brother-in-law Bob McCormick (Sandy) of Thomasville, North Carolina; and her brother-in-law Francis McCormick of North Platte.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years; her two daughters, Pat Mittan of Salome, Arizona, and Carol McCormick (June Focken) of Glenwood, Iowa; her grandson, Kyle Mittan of Tucson, Arizona; her sister, Beth Ann Fairfield, of Glenwood; and her sister-in-law, Sister Rosella McCormick of Louisville, Kentucky.

Memorials suggested to the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment.

Memorial services are scheduled for Wednesday, April 17, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 415 N. Chestnut St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 10. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30. Adams &amp; Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Michael David Hartsough, 46, of Ogallala, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Born on October 16, 1977, in Denver, Colorado, to Rex J. and Mary Ann (King) Hartsough, Michael grew up in the Denver area, embracing Colorado's natural beauty, a passion that defined his life.

In 2008, Michael made Ogallala his home, where he continued to nurture his deep connection with the outdoors. Whether he was mowing lawns, assisting an electrician, or immersing himself in landscaping projects, Michael found joy in spending every minute he could outdoors. His love for nature was paralleled by his fondness for animals. Michael's gentle spirit made him an animal magnet. He was also a person who respected and cared deeply for people from all walks of life, often extending kindness and humor in unexpected ways.

Michael's garden was his sanctuary, where he could spend entire days nurturing the plants and observing the different bugs and animals, typically capturing the beauty through the camera lens. Michael was also an avid fisherman in earlier years.

Michael's legacy of kindness, laughter, and an unwavering love for the natural world leaves an indelible mark on those who knew him.

Michael is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather and maternal grandparents. Survivors include his parents, Rex (Mary Ann) Hartsough; sisters, Michelle Hartsough of Littleton, CO, and Kristina Kleewein of Roxborough, CO; niece, Caden Kleewein; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Kelly Ray Hoffman, 65 of Aurora CO, passed away January 14 at his home.

 Kelly was born August 5, 1958 in Grant, NE to Orval Hoffman and Catherine(Mildred) Cullinan.  Kelly grew up in North Platte and spent most of his adult years in Colorado. Kelly had great accomplishments when it came to riding and racing motorcycles in his earlier years.  Kelly was known around North Platte as the guy who could fix those old VW Bugs.  But he could just about fix any thing.

Kelly married Judy Saighman and a son was born Kelly Ray II, they later divorced. Kelly is proceeded in death by his parents and brother in law, Tom Hoover. Kelly leaves behind his sons Kelly Ray of Windsor, CO and Justin Kelly of North Platte; his grandchildren Jaden, Jeremiah, Boston, Silas and Remi; Siblings Terry (Jim) Witt, Cindy (Jackie Nolan) Hoffman of North Platte, and Joel Hoffman of Seattle, WA;&nbsp; &nbsp;Nieces Tanya (Michael) Hollis, Randee Hoffman; Nephews Sean (Deb) Hoover and Adam Hoover.

Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, April 20th at 2:00 pm at New Life Church in North Platte.

Berenice Maxine Caress, age 93,&nbsp;departed&nbsp;peacefully on Sunday, April 7,&nbsp;2024,&nbsp;at the Columbine Manor in Salida, CO. Berenice was born in Dundy County, Nebraska on January 11,&nbsp;1931,&nbsp;to William and Nora Reiman. Berenice married DeWayne “Shad” Caress in May of 1952.&nbsp;Berenice and Shad&nbsp;had three&nbsp;children:&nbsp;Robert, Roxi and Robin.&nbsp;The Family&nbsp;resided&nbsp;for many years in Benkelman, NE before moving to Leadville, CO where Berenice accepted a job with Lake County School District as an&nbsp;Elementary&nbsp;School&nbsp;Teacher. The couple returned to Stratton, NE during their retirement years due to Shad’s health.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Berenice took pride in her educational accomplishments having earned her&nbsp;Bachelor’s in Education&nbsp;from Kearney State College and her&nbsp;Master’s in Education&nbsp;from Adams State College.&nbsp;She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma for many years.&nbsp;Berenice was a devout Catholic who dedicated her free time to&nbsp;The Third Order of&nbsp;Franciscans&nbsp;and The&nbsp;Altar and Rosary Society. Berenice could always be found with a book in her&nbsp;hand,&nbsp;and&nbsp;spent many enjoyable hours at the library.&nbsp;She had a love for animals,&nbsp;and especially enjoyed the companionship of her dog Skeeter.&nbsp;Spending time with her family was one of her greatest passions and enjoyments.&nbsp;Her love for people was&nbsp;evident&nbsp;in the way she would always offer her support and prayers for any in need. Berenice was thoughtful,&nbsp;generous,&nbsp;and kind to&nbsp;anyone who&nbsp;had the pleasure of&nbsp;crossing paths with her.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Berenice is survived by two of her children, Robert “Bob” Caress (Gloria) and Roxi Garrett (Mike), seven grandchildren,&nbsp;numerous&nbsp;great-grandchildren,&nbsp;nieces,&nbsp;and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Berenice could always be found with a book in her&nbsp;hand,&nbsp;and&nbsp;spent many enjoyable hours at the library.&nbsp;She had a love for animals,&nbsp;and especially enjoyed the companionship of her dog Skeeter.&nbsp;Spending time with her family was one of her greatest passions and enjoyments.&nbsp;Her love for people was&nbsp;evident&nbsp;in the way she would always offer her support and prayers for any in need. Berenice was thoughtful,&nbsp;generous,&nbsp;and kind to&nbsp;anyone who&nbsp;had the pleasure of&nbsp;crossing paths with her.&nbsp;&nbsp;Berenice is survived by two of her children, Robert “Bob” Caress (Gloria) and Roxi Garrett (Mike), seven grandchildren,&nbsp;numerous&nbsp;great-grandchildren,&nbsp;nieces,&nbsp;and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;She is preceded in death by her loving husband Shad, her parents, her son Robin “Pat”,&nbsp;grandchildren – Jayme and Shawn, and eight siblings.&nbsp;&nbsp;A&nbsp;Recitation&nbsp;of the&nbsp;Holy&nbsp;Rosary will be held at&nbsp;St. Joseph's Catholic Church,&nbsp;Stratton, NE on Saturday April 27,&nbsp;2024,&nbsp;at 10:30 A.M. &nbsp; Robert Lee Roy "Bob" Lakey unexpectedly passed away at his home in North Platte on April 9, 2024, at age 61.

Bob was born December 6, 1962, in Scottsbluff.&nbsp; He was adopted by Don and Marion Lakey and raised in North Platte where he graduated from N.P.H.S. in 1981.

On October 23, 1982, Bob married Sandra Barnett and they made their home in North Platte.&nbsp; Bob worked for different construction companies then became a truck driver, a job he did for 40 years.

Bob, like his dad, was a member of Odd Fellows, Eagles Lodge, and the Methodist Church.&nbsp; He enjoyed outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and camping.&nbsp; Bob loved life and was a friend to everyone he met, but his family was most important to him and he especially loved his kids and grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Marion Lakey; and infant brother, Rodney.

Bob is survived by his wife, Sandra; children, Jason Lakey (Jeanne), Jessica Lakey and Jamie James (Matt), all of North Platte and Jennifer Bacon (Jeff) of Colorado; grandkids, Chandler, Raelynn, Lyndsay, Matthew Jr., Moriah, Riley, Isaiah, Brendan and Leyton; his brother, Mike Lakey, and special friend, Justin Licking, both of North Platte; and other family.

Marilyn’s loves in life were her late husband Donald of 56 years, family, cattle, cards, and her friends. She especially loved her time watching her grandkids in their activities and her time spent traveling.&nbsp;

Jeremy Andrew Malone, 45, of North Platte passed away April 7, 2024, at his home. Jeremy was born June 14, 1978 to Joe Dale and Vickie Conrady Malone at Ogallala.

He graduated from Ogallala High School with the class of 1996. He then attended Central Community College at Hastings. &nbsp;Jeremy was always a hard worker and enjoyed working with his hands. He worked at Lowe’s and held various construction jobs while residing in Reno &amp; Cheyenne. &nbsp;He settled in North Platte and with the guidance of Jayne Weaver he did well. &nbsp;He moved from Assisted Living to his own apartment. He loved it there. He thrived working at Denny's for several years; before and after Covid. He was very proud of his accomplishments. Although he was a quiet man who kept to himself, his neighbors loved him. He did receive support at home from AmanaCare, which was greatly appreciated.

He enjoyed basketball, bowling, camping and fishing and helping with the derby cars.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joe; grandparents, Jack and Iona Malone, Dorothy Conrady and James and Gladys Conrady; uncle, Jack Malone, Jr.

He is survived by his mother, Vickie; brother, Troy; twin sisters, Megan (Beau) Johnson and Jamie Malone; nephews and nieces, Trent (Isabel Mays) Malone, Addison Malone, Landon Dillenburg, Aubree Malone, Levi Johnson, Sadie Johnson and Emery Malone; aunts and uncles, Carol (Ed) Baker, Judy (Gary) Cross, Bonnie White, and Pam Neal; several cousins.

Jackie liked to play slot machines in Deadwood, South Dakota. &nbsp;Family was the center of her life, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Marla Kay Weber, 68, died Tuesday, April 8, 2024 at Meadowlark Pointe in Cozad, Nebraska. Marla was born on July 21, 1955, in Alliance, Nebraska to Harvey and Delores Hampton. The family moved around western Nebraska throughout Marla’s childhood, eventually settling in the Scottsbluff/Gering area. Marla graduated from Gering High School.

On October 5, 1974, Marla married Charles Chester (Charlie) Weber of Cozad, Nebraska. To this union three children were born. They started their family in western Nebraska for a couple of years before returning to Cozad to help with the Weber family farm. Marla stayed home to raise the kids, help on the farm and provided childcare for some to the neighborhood kids. She later went to nursing school, first earning her LPN degree and then her RN degree. Marla worked at the Cozad Community Hospital for twenty years and then at nursing and assisted living facilities in central Nebraska. She retired in 2021.

Marla was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, enjoyed reading, planting flowers, working as a nurse and being a grandmother. Preceding her in death were her parents, Harvey Hampton, Delores, and Chester Hampton; her two youngest brothers, Raymond and Dawain Hampton; father and mother-in-law, Chester and Marjorie Weber; and sister-in-law, Ronda Weber.

Survivors include her husband, Charlie; siblings Carlie (Crystal) Hampton, Brenda (Randy) Hoff, and Rodney (Dixie) Hampton; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Gary) Kumke; brother-in-law, Carroll Weber, her children, Sonya Ann (Jeff) Buskirk of Kearney, Heather Dee Weber of Kearney, and William Chester (Cassondra) Weber of Omaha; and seven grandchildren, AnnaRose Marie Wilson, Dane Charles Buskirk, Grace Ann Weber, Izabella (Bella) Kaydee Buskirk, Joy Renae Bell, Hope Christine Bell, and Elijah David Killion; and two step-grandsons, Anthony and Chris Oberlin; and many nieces and nephews, and extended family.

Marla Kay Weber (1955-2024)

Dwayne Ray Jesse, age 71, of McCook, NE passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2024 at his home in McCook.

Dwayne was born September 6, 1952 in McCook to parents Everette Earl and Helen Ardis (Nichols) Jesse. He was one of four children who graduated from high school in Curtis, NE with the Class of 1971.

Early in life, in December 1972, Dwayne married Phyllis Mae (Ratzlaff) Jesse in Pontiac, Michigan. She later passed away. Dwayne remarried Linda (Junker) Jesse on June 10, 2013 in McCook.&nbsp;

Dwayne worked in the maintenance department at the Community Hospital in McCook. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, camping and fishing. He also enjoyed shooting pool in the McCook and Indianola Pool Leagues.&nbsp;

Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Phyllis Jesse; brothers, Shorty Jesse and Gary Jesse.

Cecil Wayne Hager, known as Wayne to his loved ones and friends, of McCook, NE passed away on April 6, 2024, at Great Plains Health in North Platte, NE.&nbsp;

Wayne was born August 31, 1959, in McCook, to parents Cecil B and Opal I (Seacrest) Hager. He was one of three sons born to the union.&nbsp;

In his formative years, Wayne completed his education at McCook High School alongside the Class of 1977, setting the stage for a life characterized by commitment and integrity.&nbsp;

Wayne was a man of many talents and passions. He found joy in simple pleasures like playing cards, but his true excitement emerged when watching NASCAR races or cheering for the Cornhusker Football team. His dedication extended beyond enjoyment as he actively supported high school sports and even took on the role of a baseball coach within the Indianola Baseball Program.&nbsp;Within Wayne's circle of family and friends, he leaves behind cherished memories that will forever resonate in their hearts. He is survived by his son Jeff (Sheryl) Hager and daughter Audrey, from Herzliya, Israel; daughter Brooke (Tim) Robinson from Wylie, TX, along with their children Cora and Cole; brothers Ronald (Dottie) Hager of Tyrone, OK and David (Kathy) Hager of Atchison, KS; as well as nephews Bill Hager, Jim Hager-Frease, Gary Hager, Ron Hager, Chris Hager, Matt Hager, Alan Schneider, and Charlie Schneider.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; and one nephew, Brian Hager.&nbsp;&nbsp;While we mourn the loss of Wayne in our lives today, we also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. Wayne Hager (1959-2024)

&nbsp; Melody May Pierce, age 77 passed away peacefully at her home in Stratton, Nebraska, on April 7, 2024. Melody was born on March 18, 1947 in Denver, Colorado to Stormy Elizabeth Wilson and Vernon Barrett. &nbsp;Melody grew up moving between Colorado, Ohio, Oregon and Washington with her siblings Sidney, Melinda, Melissa and Rodney.&nbsp;

In 1963, Melody met the love of her life Stanley "Bud" Pierce at the diner she was working at. Bud came in with a friend and ordered one root beer with two straws, Melody took pity on them and used her tips to buy a second, which is how their love story began. 

&nbsp;On October 23, 1965 Melody and Bud pierce were married in Columbus, Ohio. &nbsp;Melody and Stanley went on to have four children: Nena, Mike, Daniel and Jason.&nbsp;

Throughout her life Melody had several careers including being a home health care aid, cook and factory worker. &nbsp;Melody graduated from beautician school and spent several years working in the beauty industry. &nbsp;Her favorite career was working at the senior center because she enjoyed talking to the residents and learning their histories. 

&nbsp;Later in her life, Melody retired and spent her time visiting her grandchildren, working on puzzles and creating wonderful pieces of crochet and quilts. &nbsp;

She is survived by her loving husband Stanley Pierce, siblings Melissa Evans and Melinda Howell, her children Nena Roy (Duane), Mike Pierce (Trina) and Daniel Pierce (Rachel), her grandchildren Jonathan, Olivia, Joseph, Chloe, Isabel, Jade, Hayley, Alyssa, Joslyn, Taylor, Abby, DJ, Symphony and great-grandchildren, Skielyn and Kanyon. 

&nbsp;She rejoins her mother, Stormy Powell, father, Vernon Barrett, stepfather Charles Powell, siblings Sidney and Rodney, son Jason, granddaughter, Mary and great-grandson Oliver in eternal peace.&nbsp;

Melody May Pierce will be remembered as a deeply caring person, a loving wife, a mother, a grandmother and sister. &nbsp;Those who loved Melody will remember her kindness, her laughter and her smile.

 &nbsp;Services will be announced at a later. &nbsp;Benkelman Memorial Chapel entrusted with the cremation.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Harold Frederick Reitz, age 83, passed away on November 30, 2023 at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, Nebraska. &nbsp;He was born on November 29, 1940 at Sutherland, Nebraska to Henry and Mae Reitz, the oldest of 5 children. &nbsp;

He grew up in the Sutherland - Ogallala area where the family raised sugar beets. &nbsp;He graduated from Ogallala High School. &nbsp;He enlisted in the Army in December of 1958 and served in Berlin, Germany. &nbsp;After being discharged from duty, he returned to Ogallala and worked at the Chevrolet Garage. &nbsp;

Harold married Catherine (Cassie) Fuller, daughter of Herbert and Rose Dale Fuller on August 22, 1963 at St. Lukes Catholic Church in Ogallala. &nbsp;To this union 3 children, Gregory, Kelly, and Theodore, were born. &nbsp;Harold attended several colleges, receiving several degrees including one in criminal justice. &nbsp;He served as a Reserve Deputy in Keith County for 10 years. &nbsp;The family moved to Arizona and returned to Nebraska settling in North Platte. &nbsp;He enjoyed fishing, “memory trips” and the family.

Survivors include wife Cassie, sons Gregory and Theodore (Kristy) and daughter Kelly; brother Dave (Beth) of Omaha; sister, Suzanne (Lonney) Nielsen, Minden; brothers-in-law, James (Barbara), Lincoln, Arnold (Barbara), Tucson, Arizona, Charles (Carole), Fort Morgan, Colorado; 17 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; along with many cousins and close neighborhood friends and special friends.

Preceding his death were his parents; parents-in-law; brothers, Norman (Jean), Walter; 3 great-grandchildren. &nbsp;

Harold Frederick Reitz (1940-2023)

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Benjamin "Benj" Chester Fink, 72, of Elsmere, was born to Chester "Eugene" Fink and Dana Ruth Milleson Fink on March 5, 1952, in Broken Bow Nebraska. Benj passed away April 5, 2024, at Kearney Regional Hospital, Kearney NE.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Benj lived at the X7 Ranch his entire life. He attended Elsmere District 101 from K - 8th grade. He then attended Broken Bow High school, graduating in 1970. He attended Kearney State College for 2 years where he played football and wrestled. Then, he returned home to the ranch and joined his father in ranching.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Benj and Sylvia Pavelka were married in 1979 and they made their home at the ranch by Elsmere NE.&nbsp; To this marriage Scott and Amy were born.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Benj was a lifetime member of the Elsmere Baptist Church/Elsmere Bible Church and attended Sunday School, Church, VBS and was always an active participant in the activities of the church. He was part of leadership in the church and enjoyed taking his grandkids to Sunday school. Benj remained friends with classmates from his elementary, high school and college days. Benj and several of his high school classmates of 1970 made a point to get together once a year and stayed in touch. Benj was an avid supporter of Hereford Cattle and part of the Hereford Crossroads. He was involved in Goose Creek Beavers 4-H club, FFA, and in high school football and wrestling.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Benj enjoyed bull riding, attending rodeos, was a lifetime hunter and fisherman and participated in many ice fishing contests, he enjoyed bowling league, was an avid Husker fan, attending family events and he had a good eye for finding arrowheads and petrified wood. Benj enjoyed watching his cattle sell at the sale barn and attended many ranch and estate sales.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;His grandchildren and their activities were a highlight of his life. He didn't miss many of the volleyball, basketball, football, soccer or rodeos they were in. He could be seen watching them, smiling, and encouraging them. He was known for always having "Grandkid Bait" with him which was usually jellybeans or tic-tacs. Benj was always interested in the history of the ranch, Elsmere School, and his relatives. In 2004 the X7 Ranch received the Aksarben 100 Year Pioneer Award with the ranch being in the family since 1902. Benj was proud he had Hereford cattle carry the X7 brand all of his life.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Benjamin is survived by his son Scott, daughter- in -law LaCaylla, their children Bristal, Brayden and Braylee that live on the ranch; his daughter Amy and his son- in- law Chris Berggren and their children Justin and Madilyn from North Platte; his sister Kathryn and Gary Austin from Omaha and their children Kristi Svec and Brian, brothers Roger and Sheila Fink from Curtis and their sons Tim and Tony, and Ray and Kerry Fink from Burwell and their children Konni, Wes and Jessica; numerous great nieces and nephews, his aunt Marlene Milleson, 10 Fink first cousins, and 4 Milleson first cousins.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Benj was preceded in death by his grandparents, Chester and Erma Fink and Frank and Lola Milleson; mother, Dana Ruth, father Chester Eugene.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Benj loved his family and took pride in his children and grandchildren. He loved the ranch and his work on the ranch. God was good to Benj and his family. He was a kind, gentle person that enjoyed each day and had a positive attitude.
