The Nebraska women's basketball team opens the 2024-25 season at No. 23 in the USA Today/WBCA Top 25 released on Thursday, Oct. 24. The Huskers were also ranked No. 23 in the preseason AP Poll (Oct. 15).

Nebraska is coming off a trip to the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament and an appearance in the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game. The Big Red, which finished with a 23-12 record a year ago that included an 11-7 Big Ten regular-season mark, returns first-team All-Big Ten center&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://huskers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/player/alexis-markowski">Alexis Markowski</a>&nbsp;(Lincoln, Neb.) and Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://huskers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/player/natalie-potts">Natalie Potts</a>&nbsp;(O'Fallon, Mo.), along with Big Ten All-Freshman selection&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://huskers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/player/logan-nissley">Logan Nissley</a>&nbsp;(Bismarck, N.D.).&nbsp;

The Huskers are one of six Big Ten Conference teams ranked in the USA Today/WBCA Top 25, joining No. 3 USC, No. 6 UCLA, No. 14 Ohio State, No. 18 Maryland and No. 24 Indiana. Iowa, Illinois and Michigan were other Big Ten teams receiving votes.

Defending national champion South Carolina earned the No. 1 spot in the poll, while UConn starts the season at No. 2.

Last season, Nebraska finished No. 25 in the final NCAA NET rankings.

Huskers Ranked No. 23 in WBCA Preseason Top 25

The Nebraska swim and dive team will take on Iowa State in the Big Red's annual Pink Out dual meet at the Devaney Natatorium on Friday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. (CT).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Huskers plan to get back on the winning track against the Cyclones after dropping a 170-130 decision at Iowa (Oct. 18).

Against the Hawkeyes, Husker All-American Gena Jorgensen captured three individual titles, while Abby Baxter captured the victory on the one-meter board.&nbsp;

Jorgenson, a junior from Aberdeen, S.D., swam her way to wins in both the 1,000 freestyle (10:06.98) and 500 free (4:55.64). She added another victory in the 200 backstroke (4:55.64).&nbsp;

Newcomer Maisie Gilford stood out for the Huskers, contributing a pair of individual runner-up finishes in the 50 freestyle (23.98) and 100 free (52.16). The junior from England also was a part of two second-place relays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Maia Hall, a senior from Whitby, England, contributed second-place finishes in the 100 (1:03.62) and 200 (2:17.57) breaststrokes. Hall also added a third-place performance in the 200 IM (2:07.39). &nbsp;

In the diving well the Huskers had a strong all-around showing. Baxter scored 305.10 to take the title on the one-meter board. Kelsey Clairmont finished fifth. On the three-meter, sophomore&nbsp;Antonina Harned&nbsp;earned a runner-up finish (315.53), while Baxter took third and&nbsp;Nettie Knapton&nbsp;finished fifth. &nbsp;

Last Meeting with Iowa StateLast season, the Huskers powered past the Cyclones, 167-132 victory. Jorgenson led the Huskers by capturing two titles in the 1,000 (10:15.79) and 500 (4:59.84) freestyles. Nebraska native JoJo Randby contributed an individual title in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.65). Abby Baxter and Antonina Harned took first and second place in both the one-meter and three-meter dives, respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Cyclones added a second home win by beating South Dakota, 179-119, last Friday to improve 2-0 on the young season.Against South Dakota, Corinne Guist claimed victories for the Cyclones in the 1,000 (10:26.62) and 500 (5:05.47) freestyles. Grace Swoboda took a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.46). The freshman from LaVista, Neb., will swim in Nebraska collegiately for her first time on Friday. NSAA Volleyball District and Sub-District Assignments

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Omaha Supernovas&nbsp;setter&nbsp;Natalia Valentín-Anderson&nbsp;extended her string of standout performances into Week Three of the Athletes Unlimited Pro Volleyball League in Arizona.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Valentín-Anderson, who helped lead Omaha to the inaugural Pro Volleyball Federation Championship in May, teamed up with former Supernova and 2024 PVF Server of the Year&nbsp;Bethania De La Cruz-Mejía&nbsp;for the second-straight week. Team De La Cruz-Meíja were fearsome once again, recording a 2-1 record losing only to Team (Brittany) Abercrombie, who has yet to lose a match in AU this season.&nbsp;

The Olympian put up 655 points across three matches by posting109 assists (12.1 A/S), 37 digs (4.1 D/S), three kills, two blocks and one ace while being a part of two team wins. Heading into Week Four, Valentín-Anderson ranks sixth with 1,898 points being the only setter inside the top ten.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There’s no debate that Valentín-Anderson is the best performing setter in AU this season, leading the league in assists (322) by 68 over former Supernova and teammate&nbsp;Sydney Hilley&nbsp;(254). She’s also the AU leader in assists per set with 11.5 with Hilley coming closest at 9.77. Among setters, Valentín-Anderson is first in digs (114) and digs per set (4.07) while being tied for first in kills (12) and second in both aces (4) and blocks (7).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kelsie Payne&nbsp;starred at opposite for Team (Dani) Drews and racked up 285 points with 21 kills, 17 digs and four blocks. 2024 Supernovas team captain&nbsp;Brooke Nuneviller&nbsp;was balanced on the stat sheet once again with 29 kills and 28 digs across three matches. That also includes three assists, one block and one ace. Nuneviller ranks fourth overall in kills per set (3.79) and leads every attacker with 3.61 digs per set.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Supernovas middle blocker and former Nebraska Volleyball player&nbsp;Kayla Caffey&nbsp;played in only seven sets limiting her numbers to 10 kills, three blocks, two aces and one dig. She’s third in AU with 22 blocks while being extremely effective from the service line with six aces, which is third overall and first among middle blockers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Supernovas assistant coach&nbsp;Thomas Robson&nbsp;was the facilitator for Team Drews during Week Three and will shift to Team (Morgan) Hentz for Week Four.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The competing Supernovas are once again spread across two teams with Nuneviller joining undefeated Team Abercrombie after being selected with her first pick. Caffey will join her future Omaha teammate while Robson will work with Valentín-Anderson and Payne on Team Hentz. Story by Supernovas CommunicationOMAHA, Neb.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Omaha Supernovas&nbsp;setter&nbsp;Natalia Valentín-Anderson&nbsp;extended her string of standout performances into Week Three of the Athletes Unlimited Pro Volleyball League in Arizona.&nbsp;&nbsp;Valentín-Anderson, who helped lead Omaha to the inaugural Pro Volleyball Federation Championship in May, teamed up with former Supernova and 2024 PVF Server of the Year&nbsp;Bethania De La Cruz-Mejía&nbsp;for the second-straight week. Team De La Cruz-Meíja were fearsome once again, recording a 2-1 record losing only to Team (Brittany) Abercrombie, who has yet to lose a match in AU this season.&nbsp;The Olympian put up 655 points across three matches by posting109 assists (12.1 A/S), 37 digs (4.1 D/S), three kills, two blocks and one ace while being a part of two team wins. Heading into Week Four, Valentín-Anderson ranks sixth with 1,898 points being the only setter inside the top ten.&nbsp;&nbsp;There’s no debate that Valentín-Anderson is the best performing setter in AU this season, leading the league in assists (322) by 68 over former Supernova and teammate&nbsp;Sydney Hilley&nbsp;(254). She’s also the AU leader in assists per set with 11.5 with Hilley coming closest at 9.77. Among setters, Valentín-Anderson is first in digs (114) and digs per set (4.07) while being tied for first in kills (12) and second in both aces (4) and blocks (7).&nbsp;&nbsp;Kelsie Payne&nbsp;starred at opposite for Team (Dani) Drews and racked up 285 points with 21 kills, 17 digs and four blocks. 2024 Supernovas team captain&nbsp;Brooke Nuneviller&nbsp;was balanced on the stat sheet once again with 29 kills and 28 digs across three matches. Supernovas’ Valentín-Anderson stays dominant in Week Three of Athletes Unlimited, Ranks Sixth heading into Week Four 

Kearney, Neb. –&nbsp;The now sixth-ranked Nebraska Kearney volleyball team served up a season-high 10 aces and got kills from 12 different players to sweep Sterling College (<a target="_blank" href="https://lopers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/stats/2024/sterling-college-kan-/boxscore/7968">-11, -13, -11</a>) Wednesday night at the Health &amp; Sports Center.

Beginning a four-match homestand,&nbsp;the Lopers (21-1) face travel partner Fort Hays State (10-8) Friday night and then get the weekend off.

This was a countable match for the Warriors (12-11) who hail from Sterling, Kan. They used 16 different players with seven having a kill. Sterling returns to NAIA action Saturday at Evangel (Mo.).There were just five ties and three lead changes as UNK out hit SC by a .290-.000 margin. The Warriors had 21 kills and 21 errors, 17 of the unforced kind, but also dug up 45 balls.

“They played really good defense. We took some great swings…they block touched a lot of balls, they slowed balls down, we got blocked a little, they dug some hard-hit balls,” said UNK head coach&nbsp;Rick Squiers. “They came to play and had the right mentality. I’m sure they took some things away from this match and we appreciate them coming up here. It’s hard to find home matches.”

Recording its 42nd straight win over an NAIA foe, the Lopers got six kills apiece from outsides&nbsp;Carly Purdy&nbsp;(North Platte),&nbsp;Emilee Lane&nbsp;(Hays, Kan.) and&nbsp;Asha Regier&nbsp;(Newton, Kan.) and middle&nbsp;Abby Rose&nbsp;(Lindsborg, Kan.). Lane reached her tally in just eight swings (.750 pct.) with Rose at 10 attempts (.400 pct.) and providing two blocks at the net. &nbsp;“There were a couple of things we wanted to see tonight. We wanted to make sure Carly got swings on both pins and we accomplished that. I thought she handled herself well,” said Squiers.

“Rhyan (Mock)&nbsp;came in and played good volleyball for us, we need to keep getting&nbsp;Trista (Marx)&nbsp;involved so she was able to come in and do some good things.”

Team De La Cruz-Meíja were fearsome once again, recording a 2-1 record losing only to Team (Brittany) Abercrombie, who has yet to lose a match in AU this season.&nbsp;The Olympian put up 655 points across three matches by posting109 assists (12.1 A/S), 37 digs (4.1 D/S), three kills, two blocks and one ace while being a part of two team wins. Heading into Week Four, Valentín-Anderson ranks sixth with 1,898 points being the only setter inside the top ten.&nbsp;&nbsp;There’s no debate that Valentín-Anderson is the best performing setter in AU this season, leading the league in assists (322) by 68 over former Supernova and teammate&nbsp;Sydney Hilley&nbsp;(254). She’s also the AU leader in assists per set with 11.5 with Hilley coming closest at 9.77. Among setters, Valentín-Anderson is first in digs (114) and digs per set (4.07) while being tied for first in kills (12) and second in both aces (4) and blocks (7).&nbsp;&nbsp;Kelsie Payne&nbsp;starred at opposite for Team (Dani) Drews and racked up 285 points with 21 kills, 17 digs and four blocks. 2024 Supernovas team captain&nbsp;Brooke Nuneviller&nbsp;was balanced on the stat sheet once again with 29 kills and 28 digs across three matches. That also includes three assists, one block and one ace. Nuneviller ranks fourth overall in kills per set (3.79) and leads every attacker with 3.61 digs per set.&nbsp;&nbsp;Supernovas middle blocker and former Nebraska Volleyball player&nbsp;Kayla Caffey&nbsp;played in only seven sets limiting her numbers to 10 kills, three blocks, two aces and one dig. She’s third in AU with 22 blocks while being extremely effective from the service line with six aces, which is third overall and first among middle blockers.&nbsp;&nbsp;Supernovas assistant coach&nbsp;Thomas Robson&nbsp;was the facilitator for Team Drews during Week Three and will shift to Team (Morgan) Hentz for Week Four.&nbsp;&nbsp;The competing Supernovas are once again spread across two teams with Nuneviller joining undefeated Team Abercrombie after being selected with her first pick. A trio of former Nebraska Cornhuskers are listed on opening night rosters as the NBA season begins on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp; Dalano Banton and Bryce McGowens are teammates on the Portland Trail Blazers, while Jack McVeigh is a rookie with the Houston Rockets.&nbsp; It is the fourth straight season that Nebraska has had multiple players on NBA rosters.&nbsp; While Opening Night is set for Tuesday, both Portland and Houston begin their NBA seasons on Wednesday.

Banton comes off his best season as a professional, averaging 10.3 points 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while splitting time with both the Boston Celtics and Portland Trailblazers. He flourished after his trade with Portland, averaging 16.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in 30 games. Banton begins his fourth NBA season after being a second-round pick in 2021. After sitting out the 2019-20 campaign, Banton played in all 27 games, including 22 starts, for the Huskers in 2020-21, averaging 9.6 points per game while leading the Huskers in both rebounding (5.9) and assists (3.9) per game. He was the first Husker since 1974 to lead NU in both rebounding and assists in the same season.&nbsp; Banton posted the second triple-double in school history with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in just 21 minutes against Doane and totaled 14 games in double figures.

McGowens begins his third NBA season, as he is on a two-way contract with the Trail Blazers after signing with the organization over the summer. McGowens spent the first two years with the Charlotte Hornets, playing in 105 career games and averaging 5.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.&nbsp; McGowens was the No. 40 overall pick in 2022, the highest drafted Husker since 1998.&nbsp; At Nebraska, he was a third-team All-Big Ten performer as a freshman in 2021-22, averaging a team-high 16.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. An eight-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, McGowens had 11 games with 20-or-more points, including a season-high 29 points against both Sam Houston and Rutgers.

McVeigh is with the Houston Rockets after signing a two-way contract prior to the 2024 Paris Olympics. He played in a pair of preseason games for the Rockets, averaging 7.5 ppg on 60 percent shooting and 3.0 rebounds per game.&nbsp; This is his rookie season after he played professionally in Australia and Germany, and he will become the 16th Husker to play in the NBA when he makes his debut.&nbsp; McVeigh comes off a strong performance in the 2024 Olympics, averaging 9.5 points per game on 52 percent shooting, including 10-of-19 (.526) from 3-point range. McVeigh played three seasons at Nebraska before returning home to begin his professional career. His best year was in 2016-17, when he averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in 30 games, including 11 starts. He was a member of the Huskers’ 2017-18 team that won 23 games, including a school record 13 conference games.

In addition to the three former Husker players in the NBA, Tyronn Lue begins his fifth season as head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. Lue, who played at Nebraska from 1996-98, has guided the Clippers to a184-134 record and three postseason appearances in his four seasons. Last year, he coached Los Angeles to a Pacific Division title. Before taking the Clippers, Lue led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 128-83 record, three NBA Finals appearances and franchise’s first NBA title in 2016.

After sitting out the 2019-20 campaign, Banton played in all 27 games, including 22 starts, for the Huskers in 2020-21, averaging 9.6 points per game while leading the Huskers in both rebounding (5.9) and assists (3.9) per game. He was the first Husker since 1974 to lead NU in both rebounding and assists in the same season.&nbsp; Banton posted the second triple-double in school history with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in just 21 minutes against Doane and totaled 14 games in double figures.McGowens begins his third NBA season, as he is on a two-way contract with the Trail Blazers after signing with the organization over the summer. McGowens spent the first two years with the Charlotte Hornets, playing in 105 career games and averaging 5.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.&nbsp; McGowens was the No. 40 overall pick in 2022, the highest drafted Husker since 1998.&nbsp; At Nebraska, he was a third-team All-Big Ten performer as a freshman in 2021-22, averaging a team-high 16.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. An eight-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, McGowens had 11 games with 20-or-more points, including a season-high 29 points against both Sam Houston and Rutgers.McVeigh is with the Houston Rockets after signing a two-way contract prior to the 2024 Paris Olympics. He played in a pair of preseason games for the Rockets, averaging 7.5 ppg on 60 percent shooting and 3.0 rebounds per game.&nbsp; This is his rookie season after he played professionally in Australia and Germany, and he will become the 16th Husker to play in the NBA when he makes his debut.&nbsp; McVeigh comes off a strong performance in the 2024 Olympics, averaging 9.5 points per game on 52 percent shooting, including 10-of-19 (.526) from 3-point range. McVeigh played three seasons at Nebraska before returning home to begin his professional career. His best year was in 2016-17, when he averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in 30 games, including 11 starts. He was a member of the Huskers’ 2017-18 team that won 23 games, including a school record 13 conference games.In addition to the three former Husker players in the NBA, Tyronn Lue begins his fifth season as head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. Lue, who played at Nebraska from 1996-98, has guided the Clippers to a184-134 record and three postseason appearances in his four seasons. Last year, he coached Los Angeles to a Pacific Division title. Before taking the Clippers, Lue led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 128-83 record, three NBA Finals appearances and franchise’s first NBA title in 2016.

North Platte, Neb. – Knights wrapped up Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference action with a four-set loss to McCook Community College on Tuesday night.

Jaelyn Dicke led the way with 13 kills, 17 digs and two assisted blocks. Zoe Maher added eight kills to accompany her 10 digs and two assisted blocks.

A 3-0 rally propelled the Indians to a 7-4 lead in the opening set. North Platte surged back to retake the lead on a net violation, 9-8. The lead would change hands three more times throughout the course of the first set. Back-to-back attacking errors evened the match at 23, before two straight points secured the set for the road team.

North Platte leapt out to a 14-1 lead in the second set after a block from Nya Lual. Knights continued to dominate the set until a late 9-1 run pulled the Indians back within three, 23-20. The black and gold went back to work and closed the set out with kills from Maher and Dicke.

The margin stayed under three in the opening moments of the third set until a 4-0 run pushed the Indians out to a 14-9 lead. North Platte managed to cut the deficit to two on an attacking error, but McCook closed out the set on an 8-1 run to take the 2-1 set advantage.

Knights traded points with the Indians to open the fourth set. McCook caught fire with a 5-1 run to build an 11-6 lead. The Indians continued to extend their lead over the remainder of the set to put the finishing touches on their four-set win.

Knights (12-23) will conclude the regular season at home on Saturday against Lamar Community College. Serve is set for 2 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

Area Volleyball scores 10-22

Miu Takahashi recorded a hole-in-one on her way to a 71 (-1) to lead the Nebraska women's golf team in the final round of the Jim West Challenge in San Marcos, Texas on Monday.

Takahashi, a senior from Nasu-machi, Japan, aced the 165-yard, par-3 fourth hole to highlight her best round of the season on the 6,111-yard, par-72 layout at the Kissing Tree Golf Course.

Takahashi closed the tournament in a tie for 61st, while helping the Huskers&nbsp; to an 11th-place team finish in the 12-team field.

Lauren Thiele led Nebraska with a three-round total of 226 (+10) to tie for 49th overall in the 68-player field. The redshirt sophomore from Wahoo, Neb., produced rounds of 73 and 76 on Monday, before closing with a 77 Tuesday.

True freshman Eden Lohrbach (Ames, Iowa) was Nebraska's No. 2 finisher with a three-round total of 229 (+13) to take 54th, including a final-round 73 (+1). Lohrbach opened with back-to-back rounds of 78 on Monday.

Sophomore Hannah Kono was NU's No. 3 finisher in the tournament with her tie for 56th at 231 with three consecutive rounds of 77 (+5).&nbsp;

Freshman Danica Lundgren (Austin, Texas) rounded out the Husker contingent in a tie for 65th at 239 (+23), including a final-round 74 (+2) on Tuesday that counted toward Nebraska's team total.

No. 23 TCU won the team title with a three-round total of 842 (-22), one shot better than runner-up Houston at 843 (-21). Oklahoma took third at 844 (-20), while Ohio State and Texas Tech tied for fourth at 849 (-15).&nbsp;

Nebraska closed with a three-round score of 915 (+51) to finish one shot ahead of Northern Illinois.

TCU's Kirstin Angosta took medalist honors at 206 (-10) with a one-stroke win over five golfers, including teammate Camille Min-Gaultier, UNLV's McKenzi Hall, New Mexico's Maria Garcia, Texas Tech's Lauren Zaretsky and Oklahoma's Reagan Chaney.

The Nebraska women’s cross country team jumped to No. 6 in the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Rankings on Monday. The Huskers moved up five spots after being ranked No. 11 last week.

Lincoln, Neb.&nbsp;- Despite outshooting the Huskies 25-9, the Nebraska soccer team fell 2-0 to Washington at home on Senior Sunday.&nbsp;

Nebraska also held the advantage in corners (7-0), but Washington led in shots on goal (7-5) and saves (7-3), as the Huskers dropped to 5-10-1 (2-7-1 Big Ten) on the season and Washington improved to 9-5-2 (6-4-0 Big Ten).&nbsp;

Nebraska was on the offensive attack early, as Sarah Weber tallied the opening two shots of the game, but it was Washington that recorded the first finish for either team. In the seventh minute, Ioanna Papatheodorou scored off assists from Samiah Shell and Kelsey Branson.

Going into the half, the Huskers held the lead in shots (14-7) and corners (4-0), while the Huskies tallied one more shot on goal (4-3). Individually, Weber led the way for the Huskers with six shots and freshman Reese Snowden added three of her own. Abbey Schwarz, Lauryn Anglim and Gwen Lane each recorded a shot on frame.

In the second half, the Huskers recorded 11 shots, including a few late chances to score, but Washington’s Alex Buck stretched the Huskie lead to 2-0 after a turnover in the Husker backfield in the 68th minute.&nbsp;

Weber’s nine shots on the day brings her career total to 330, just shy of Meghan Anderson in second place in the Husker record books. Overall, 10 Huskers recorded at least one shot, and two Huskers played the complete game, Haley Peterson and Anglim.&nbsp;

The Huskers wrap up regular season play as they welcome Indiana to Hibner Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 27. Action is slated for 1:05 p.m. (CT) and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.

Columbus, Neb. – North Platte Community College volleyball fell to Central Community College in straight sets to close out Region IX regular season play on Thursday night.

In the loss, the Knights solidify the second seed in the Region IX postseason tournament and will host the opening round on Oct. 30.

Raiders used a 3-0 run to pull away in the opening moments of the first set. Central continued to hold the momentum as they stretched the margin to 20-11. A kill by Ella Rotherham helped North Platte cut into the deficit, but three straight points anchored by back-to-back aces secured the set for the Raiders.

North Platte took an early 5-2 lead on a kill by Nya Lual. Central fought back to knot the set up at five before taking the lead on an attacking error by the Knights. The margin remained close until a 6-0 run pushed the Raiders out to a 19-12 advantage. North Platte rallied to cut the margin to 24-21, but Central scored their final point to take a two-set lead.

North Platte kept the game tight early, before a 3-0 run propelled the black and gold out to an 11-8 lead. The game remained close as the lead changed hands three more times in the closing stages of the set. Trailing 19-18, North Platte turned to Zoe Maher who bested the defense three straight times to give the Knights a two-point advantage. Raiders responded with a 4-0 run, before eventually closing the set out on a kill by Lauryn Scott.

Maher led the way with 12 kills on 36 swings and two digs, while Jaelyn Dicke added 22 digs, 10 kills and one ace.
