BOULDER, COLO. –&nbsp;NebraskaLand Bank is proud to announce the graduation of&nbsp;Amy Wolfskill, Senior Vice President, Business &amp; Retail Banking Manager, from the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado (GSBC)’s&nbsp;state-of-the-art program.&nbsp;Wolfskill completed a rigorous and all-encompassing banking curriculum, equipping her to serve as a leader in her organization and as a trusted financial provider in her community.

Wolfskill is&nbsp;among 159 graduates representing 28 U.S. states honored in a ceremony on July 25. Of the 159-person group, Wolfskill was one of 20 graduates recognized with Honors, an accolade given to those who graduate in the top 10% of their class based on intersession project performance. Throughout their 25 months in the program, they were immersed in a mix of traditional and non-traditional models of coursework on financial management and strategy, innovation and engagement, leadership and culture, and lending–all through a community banking lens.

These fellows were selected based on their demonstrated leadership potential, commitment to agriculture and dedication to their communities.

Nebraska LEAD Class 43 Fellows represent a diverse group of professionals from across the state, bringing with them a wealth of experience and expertise in various sectors of Nebraska’s agricultural industry. Over the next two years, they will participate in a rigorous curriculum designed to enhance their leadership skills, broaden their understanding of domestic and global agricultural issues, and prepare them for greater roles in their communities and industries.

Willow repairs underway in North Platte

The Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial Run, an annual race aimed at raising awareness and understanding of mental health, raised $10,000 for Nebraska Game and Parks state park trails in 2024.

To date, supporters of the Vanderheiden Memorial run have contributed more than $30,000 to the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation to support trails.

Runners from every state in the nation and all 93 Nebraska counties participated either virtually or in-person in this year’s May 25 race, which brought together hundreds of people united around raising mental health awareness. Participants used the hashtags #PreventSuicide and #Run4TJV when they shared their race stories, memories of Tyler and their connection to the outdoors.

“The outpouring of support is a true reflection of the love we have for our precious son, Tyler,” said Shannon Vanderheiden, Tyler’s mother. “Our race efforts are just a glimpse of the important work and impact that Tyler has had on the lives of others, even those who never had the privilege of meeting him.

“For many the great outdoors holds a healing power that nurtures both our physical and mental health well-being, and we are humbled and grateful for the support we receive through Ty’s race to continue raising awareness about the importance of mental health well-being and suicide prevention. Thank you for being part of our family’s journey. Together, we are building a legacy of love and hope that will live on for generations to come.”

The annual event began in 2020 with the intent of being a space for healing and support for those who struggle with mental health or know someone who has, and since 2022, has benefitted trails across the state.

Funds donated this year will be used to support trail upgrades at Smith Falls State Park, home to Nebraska’s highest waterfall, and the donation could trigger access of up to $32,000 in matching federal Recreation Trails Program funds if a grant application by Game and Parks is successful this fall.

The run is organized by the Platte River Fitness Series, with support by West Central District Health Department, where Vanderheiden serves as executive director.

“Memorial races like this one resonate with runners in a special way,” said Trudy Merritt, series director. “Attaching something bigger than ourselves to a hard effort creates space for meaning making, something necessary for human flourishing.”

Memorial run raises $10K for Smith Falls trails

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– Today, Governor Jim Pillen joined leaders from the University of Nebraska in recognizing the first cohort of students to qualify for a uniquely designed program aimed at increasing the number production animal veterinarians in Nebraska. Those veterinarians specialize in working with farmers and ranchers who raise cattle, swine, sheep and other forms of livestock and poultry.

Gov. Pillen and university leadership announced the creation of the&nbsp;Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program&nbsp;in February, and the first applications were accepted in March. Nineteen students are currently enrolled. Each one receives the Nebraska Production Animal Health Scholarship, which covers 50% of their tuition for the first two years of study in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL). &nbsp;

“These students are embarking on a challenging, yet hugely rewarding career path,” said Gov. Pillen, who also received his doctorate in veterinary medicine. “The demand for production animal veterinarians is high. This program is a leader in the United States. It will provide students the top-level training they need, and it will set them on a career path that will allow them to continue practicing, right here in Nebraska.”

Up to 25 students can take advantage of the initial scholarship. Following their second year of study, 13 are chosen for a continuation scholarship that covers 100% of their tuition during their third and fourth years. From there, the Elite 11 are selected from UNL’s Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine (PPVM) to have all tuition and fees paid for while they attend UNL’s dual Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program with Iowa State University (ISU).

"The Elite 11 program is creating exactly the kind of impact we hoped it would,” said Dr. Jeffrey Gold, president, University of Nebraska. “I'm so pleased to welcome this group of talented young women and men to the University of Nebraska, and I know they will achieve great things for Nebraska agriculture and the veterinary industry in the years to come. I want to thank Dean Tiffany Heng-Moss for her vision on this important effort and Governor Pillen for his leadership and support every step of the way."

One of the key requirements for consideration and participation in the Elite 11 program is that applicants must be residents of Nebraska. They must also demonstrate a strong interest in production animal health and a commitment to major in animal or veterinary science.

“I am thrilled to welcome these 19 scholarship recipients to the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at UNL,” said Dean Tiffany Heng-Moss of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. “These outstanding students had their choice of colleges, but I’m delighted to be able to say that all have committed to staying in our state both during college and after. This is a big win for Nebraska, our veterinary workforce, and the future of agriculture in our state.”

Mike Boehm, NU vice president and Harlan vice chancellor for UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, also offered his congratulations to the inaugural students.&nbsp;

Traffic will be maintained with lane closures. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is spring 2025.

The purpose of these projects is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system, and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.

Lincoln, NE – August 27, 2024 – Due to high sales, officials in the states participating in the Mega Millions® Lotto game have increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Tuesday, August 27 drawing to $582 million or $286.9 million with the cash option selected.

The Hot Sheets: August 27th, 2024

(North Platte, Nebraska, 08/26/2024) On October 14th and 15th, the best of Nebraska High School Class C girls’ golfers will unite in North Platte for the state championship tournament. 

The event is expected to draw 95-115 golfers from across the state to the Lake Maloney Golf Course. Along with the participants, we are expecting many friends and family to travel alongside their girls to support them. 

There is a need for volunteers to assist with the NSAA Class C Girls State Golf Championship. Volunteer positions include scoring monitors, spotters, score card checkers, and alternates. 

Volunteering is a great way to get involved with the community, and you’ll be able to help showcase what a spectacular area North Platte is! For more information regarding descriptions of volunteer positions, please visit https://form.jotform.com/232004695990157. This link will also allow you to sign up! 

While it is helpful for our volunteers to have a basic knowledge of golf, it is by no means necessary. Each day, we will need over 50 volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Taylor Salas at Visit North Platte, 308-532-4729 or email tsalas@visitnorthplatte.com. Priority is given to volunteers who can work both days of the tournament. Volunteers will receive coffee and snacks in the morning, lunch, and an official NSAA jacket. The deadline to volunteer is September 27th.

North Platte, Neb. - The village of Hershey has officially kicked off the Hershey Fall Festival with the golf tournament today and family fun events running all day tomorrow leading up to the Colin Stough Concert. Tickets for the concert are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. (Audio) Hershey Fall Festival kicks off today, runs through Saturday

<a>(North Platte, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>—&nbsp;&nbsp;Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Carrier Enforcement Division conducted local commercial vehicle inspections on Wednesday, August 21st, in North Platte, Nebraska.

During this effort, the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team conducted 39 vehicle inspections. Troopers discovered 95 violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and state law. Troopers placed 12 vehicles out of service (not allowed to return to the road). Additionally, troopers placed 3 drivers out of service.

Vehicles are placed out of service for a variety of reasons relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that pose immediate safety risks. Troopers issued a total of 11 citations during the inspections.

During the inspections, troopers also issued a total of 11 CVSA decals. The decals indicate that the vehicle did not have any immediate safety issues.

The effort focuses on commercial vehicles that may not pass-through weigh stations as part of their regular routes.

The MAPS Team is funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Troopers check for compliance with federal safety regulations and enforce laws pertaining to weight, size, registration, dyed fuels, and permits associated with commercial vehicles. The MAPS Team was implemented in 1998 and consists of troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division.

Lexington, Neb. -&nbsp;The Lexington Police Department is investigating a Missing/Runaway Juvenile. 15 year old Morianna Anderson is described as 5'7" tall and weighing 150 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Unknown clothing description. 

Morianna left her home on August 21st. It is believed she is possibly in the Kearney Nebraska area. If anyone has any knowledge as to her whereabouts you are urged to contact the Lexington Police Department at #308-324-2317 or on Facebook.
