&nbsp; WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (NE-03) led their Nebraska colleagues in&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2023/2/fischer-leads-nebraska-delegation-in-reintroducing-bill-to-award-congressional-gold-medal-to-north-platte-canteen-volunteers">reintroducing</a>&nbsp;the North Platte Canteen Congressional Gold Medal Act.

The bill would award the Congressional Gold Medal to the collective individuals and communities who volunteered or donated food and other items to the North Platte Canteen in North Platte, Nebraska, during World War II.&nbsp;U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) is an original cosponsor of the Senate legislation. U.S. Representatives Don Bacon (NE-02), and Mike Flood (NE-01) are original cosponsors of the House legislation.

“During the world’s darkest time, a host of patriotic Nebraskans volunteered to give our service members a taste of home and of hope at the&nbsp;North&nbsp;Platte&nbsp;Canteen. Those volunteers included my own mother, Florence. I’m proud to reintroduce this legislation, which will honor the Nebraskans who ran the&nbsp;North&nbsp;Platte&nbsp;Canteen&nbsp;for nearly five years during World War II,”&nbsp;said Senator Fischer.

“For four and a half years, the North Platte Canteen gave a sense of home to more than 6 million American troops traversing the country by train to serve in the Second World War. Volunteers from Nebraska communities came from as much as 200 miles away to lend a hand and provide meals, refreshments, and baked goods to up to 5,000 soldiers per day at the Canteen’s peak. This bill will honor this monumental patriotic effort as a great moment in American history. I thank Sen. The North Platte Canteen was a railroad stop in North Platte, Nebraska, that was recognized during World War II for providing hospitality to soldiers traveling through the area. An estimated 55,000 people from 125 communities throughout Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas contributed food, money, or time to serve the Canteen’s estimated 6 million visitors.

The North Platte Canteen operated from Christmas Day, 1941 to April 1, 1946. It was the largest community-based canteen in the U.S. and one of the largest volunteer efforts during World War II.

Fischer, Smith Lead Delegation in Reintroducing Bill to Honor North Platte Canteen Volunteers

&nbsp; WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (NE-03), and U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) issued the following statements after the United States Postal Service (USPS) announced that local mail processing operations will remain at the North Platte Mail Processing and Distribution Center. In addition to mail operations remaining in North Platte, Nebraska, the USPS also announced its plans to invest up to $4.4 million in modernization efforts at the North Platte facility.

“This is wonderful news for North Platte. We spoke out against the troubling plan to move mail operations to Denver, and thankfully, our concerns were heard. Mail processing operations are essential to the North Platte area, and I am glad they will continue benefitting this community and Nebraska as a whole,”&nbsp;said Senator Fischer.

"I am glad to see the Postal Service no longer plans to send local mail from the North Platte facility to Denver. Improvements to postal operations are needed to better serve Nebraskans. Any efforts toward modernization must not come at the expense of customer service but rather increase effectiveness. Because of this, I have urged President Trump to maintain high standards for rural delivery as his administration works to address the significant challenges facing the Postal Service,”&nbsp;said Congressman Smith.“The North Platte facility is vital for ensuring timely and reliable mail and package deliveries for communities across Nebraska,”&nbsp;said Senator Ricketts.&nbsp;

“This decision reaffirms that we can enhance efficiency and improve service quality without sacrificing local operations. I’m glad the Postmaster General listened to our call to protect critical services for rural Nebraska.”&nbsp;

On January 10, 2024, USPS published a notice that it was conducting a Mail Processing Facility Review of its processing operations at the North Platte P&amp;DC.

On March 11, 2024, USPS announced its initial results of the facility review, including plans to transfer some mail processing operations to the Denver P&amp;DC in Colorado.

Currently, the North Platte facility processes and distributes all mail in Nebraska west of the city of Cozad to the Wyoming border, north to the South Dakota border, and into portions of northern Kansas.

On March 28, 2024, USPS held a public meeting to share the initial results of the study and allow members of the community to provide additional feedback.

On May 8, 2024, USPS announced it will transfer operations of the North Platte Mail Processing and Distribution Center to Denver, Colorado, and convert the North Platte facility to a Local Processing Center.

Shortly after, Senator Fischer sent a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news?ID=86E21580-884E-4B59-8993-A743A6ED36E2">letter</a>&nbsp;to Postmaster DeJoy urging him to delay the proposed changes until their impact could be further studied and better understood.

As a result, on May 13, 2024, Postmaster DeJoy confirmed that the USPS would pause its planned changes and wrote that an updated plan would resume in 2025.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The program began as a goodwill gesture between girls in the local community and the visiting delegates. Miss Nebraska Organization's Megan Doughty says Sparklers is for little girls 6-12 years old, "they are paired with one of the Miss or Teen delegate during the Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska's Teen cometition in June for the entirety of the week. The girls get to dance with the delgates on stage, are introduced to the pageant crowd and more".&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: February 18th, 2025

February 17, 2025 (OMAHA, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is heartbroken to announce that a Nebraska State Trooper has been killed in the line of duty today.

The&nbsp; Trooper was Kyle McAcy #302, who gave his life in the line of duty this morning while assisting motorists who had been involved in a crash on Interstate 80 near Ashland. 

Preliminary investigation shows that Trooper McAcy was responding with other troopers to a crash on Interstate 80 near mile marker 424, between Ashland and Greenwood. During that response, Trooper McAcy was outside his patrol unit and was struck by a snowplow.

Trooper McAcy has been a dedicated Trooper for 10 years and an incredible friend to countless people. Trooper McAcy, 31, was a ten-year veteran of the Nebraska State Patrol. He was a graduate of Camp 56 and wore badge #302. Trooper McAcy has served in the Patrol Division, Carrier Enforcement, and as a Crisis Negotiator. He was stationed in Omaha.

NSP has asked the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office to conduct the crash investigation. As winter weather conditions continue across the state, NSP urges all motorists to be safe if they must travel.&nbsp;

February 17, 2025 (OMAHA, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is heartbroken to announce that a Nebraska State Trooper has been killed in the line of duty today.The&nbsp; Trooper was Kyle McAcy #302, who gave his life in the line of duty this morning while assisting motorists who had been involved in a crash on Interstate 80 near Ashland. Preliminary investigation shows that Trooper McAcy was responding with other troopers to a crash on Interstate 80 near mile marker 424, between Ashland and Greenwood. During that response, Trooper McAcy was outside his patrol unit and was struck by a snowplow.Trooper McAcy has been a dedicated Trooper for 10 years and an incredible friend to countless people. Former North Platte Trooper killed while responding to crash on Interstate 80 near Ashland

The University of Nebraska Medical Center has announced its fall 2024 dean’s list for students enrolled in nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and the allied health professions of medical imaging and therapeutic sciences program and medical laboratory science.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To qualify for the dean’s list, nursing and the allied health students must be enrolled for 12 or more hours during the semester and have a grade point average of 3.75 or above. To qualify for the pharmacy dean’s list, students must place in the top 20% of their class and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Dental students must be in the top 10% of their class for the semester.&nbsp;

UNMC Announces Fall 2024 Dean’s List

North Platte Community College’s 56th annual Inter-High Day lured in 373 students from 14 area high schools Thursday.

They competed for scholarships and other prizes while taking tests in everything from art, accounting and criminal justice to auto body, welding and diesel technology. The scholastic contest was spread across both of NPCC’s campuses.

Schools earned points based on how well their students placed in the academic divisions. The top three point earning schools received a plaque and a $500 scholarship to award to a student of their choice.

Individual first place winners received a medal, a $500 scholarship and three credit hours of summer tuition to the college. Second and third place recipients earned medals as well as three credit hours of summer tuition.

The top three winners in each of the applied technology competitions also received industry-based prizes related to their test areas.

The event is set to begin with the doors opening at 6:00pm, a live auction at 7:00pm and live music from local artist Drew Phillips Band to begin at 9:00pm. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased online or at the door. Tickets get you entry for two drink tickets and also a meal will be served. This year's theme is Star Wars.

An online NPCC information technology surplus auction will take place Feb. 17 – Feb. 23.

Surplus items include TVs, printers, iPads, MacBooks and other laptops. Items may be previewed at:&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://airauctioneer.com/mid-plains-community-college-it-surplus-auction-feb-2025">https://airauctioneer.com/mid-plains-community-college-it-surplus-auction-feb-2025</a>. Equipment will be sold “as is,” and all sales will be final.

Bidders must create an account or connect to an existing Google or Facebook account to register for the auction. They will receive email updates on items they’ve bid on and a “buy it now” option will also be available.

High bidders will be able to pick up their items the day they purchase them. All electronics must be picked up by 4 p.m. Feb. 28 unless other arrangements are made.

All payments will be due at time of pick up on NPCC’s North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive. Only cash or checks, no credit or debit cards, will be accepted. Winners will be asked to show the winning bid email upon arrival at the Welcome Center.
