Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Tara Krupicka about the Farm and Ranch Expo coming to the D&amp;N Event Center this week.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Farm and Ranch Expo is quickly approaching and will be the D&amp;N Event Center this Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday event will take place from 9:00am - 6:00pm while Thursday event will be from 9:00am - 4:00pm. The event is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.&nbsp;

This year, FFA students have a chance to participate in the FFA Passport. The FFA Passport has vendors who have signed up and students must visit the vendors and if they go to all the vendors, they can drop off their passport at the chamber table for a potential prize. Proceeds from this year's event will also help raise scholarships for local students who are interested in going into the Ag field.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: February 3rd, 2024

Students from Ogallala High School are gaining valuable skills in applied technology thanks to a new Ready-to-Work Building Construction program.

The program, offered through the Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus, was designed with a dual purpose in mind. It provides an educational opportunity for students who might be interested in a career in the trades and also serves as an effort to meet workforce needs in Keith County.

“We know education is changing, and we know employers are looking to hire people with skills, not just degrees,” said Mary Pierce, MPCC Ogallala Campus administrator. “Most contractors in Keith County would love to hire entry-level employees with skills.”

Casey Craig, owner of Unit #24 Welding and Construction in Ogallala, is one of them. He is the instructor for the class.

“There’s definitely a lot of need for laborers in general in the trades, let alone someone who has the basic skills,” Craig said. “That’s what we are trying to teach here, so [these students] can come into the field and have the basic skills and knowledge to be useful. I took this position because I’ve been trying to hire someone for the past two years and finally came to the realization that I could either continue complaining about it or do something about it – not just for my business and my sake but for the rest of the community.”

The RTWBC program is based out of the MPCC Ogallala Campus.

The four students in the program were selected through the high school. Together, they are building a 16 by 20-foot structure that could be used for a variety of purposes such as a tiny house, shed or workshop. It will have a porch and railing on the front. The students are learning all aspects of home building in the process – everything from framing and windows to trusses and roofing.

“I was excited when I heard about this opportunity because I want to go into building construction,” said Hailey Tolander, a junior at Ogallala High School. “We’re learning about measurements and how to cut stuff. It’s been a really fun learning experience.”

The class meets two days per week. Work started in January and will continue into March. After successful completion of the program, the students will receive a Building Construction Technology certificate from MPCC.

The finished building will be auctioned in the spring, and proceeds will be put toward a future class.

“The MPCC Ready-to-Work program has been a great experience for our students,” said John O’Neil, principal of Ogallala High School. “The opportunity to work on this project has been fun and rewarding for them. Through hands-on learning, they’re not only gaining construction skills, but also building a foundation of resilience, teamwork and tangible skills that will last a lifetime.”

The MPCC Ogallala Campus is able to offer the RTWBC program for free thanks to a combination of grant funding and sponsors.

The majority of funds for RTWBC came from an $8,333 grant that will be provided annually over five years by the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority’s Teaching Nebraska Trades program.

Teaching Nebraska Trades is designed to encourage students to enter the construction trades, especially those focused on residential housing, and to motivate them to seek out training at the community college level.

The overall goal is to build sustainable programs supporting trade education in Nebraska after the initial pilot years have concluded.

Local and regional businesses, including Ogallala’s Mead Lumber and First Star Recycling, also contributed materials for the RTWBC program.

Nebraska Tourism announces tourism grant recipients

Update: The wanted male Martin Palomo is in custody this afternoon with the assistance from Gering Police Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, National Park Service, and Gering Fire Department. Palomo was located in Gering and taken into custody without incident.

A warrant for the arrest of Scottsbluff man has been issued in connection to a stabbing on January 1st in Morrill.&nbsp; Authorities were notified of a female stabbing victim that was treated at the Regional West Medical Center Emergency Room early morning on New Year's Day. 

Officers responded and determined that the 40-year-old female victim had been stabbed in the abdomen and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred at a local residence and the victim was transported to the hospital by two roommates following the incident.

During the investigation the suspect was identified as 52-year-old MARTIN PALOMO of Scottsbluff, Nebraska. An arrest warrant has been issued for Palomo, charging him with 1st Degree Domestic Assault (Class IIA Felony), Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony (Class II Felony), Possession of a Deadly Weapon by Prohibited Person (Class III Felony), Burglary (Class IIA Felony) and Terroristic Threats (Class IIIA Felony). 

A search warrant was executed at a Gering residence after information was received that Mr. Palomo may be at that residence, but he was not located. The whereabouts of Mr. Palomo are not known at this time.

The Morrill Police Department and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident and were assisted by the Scottsbluff Police Department, Gering Police Department, Mitchell Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team, Gering Fire Department, Regional West Medical Center Ambulance Service.

Higgins’ teams won NCCAC championships in 2012 and 2017, were co-conference champions in 2016 and NCCAC runners-up in 2013 and 2015.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: February 1st, 2024

LINCOLN — The Nebraska State Auditor’s Office on Wednesday accused the former director of an Ogallala senior center of improperly paying herself more than $11,000 upon leaving the job.

According to an audit of the Keith County Senior Center, Jeanine “Jeanie” Herman paid herself $2,380 twice for unused vacation leave upon her exit in March 2023.

In addition, Herman obtained checks of $7,480 for unused sick leave, even though the center didn’t pay for unused sick leave, and other checks for $1,360 for “Vacation Salary” and “Sick Salary” that also were not allowed. None of the payments was approved by the center’s board of directors, the auditor noted.

The Auditor’s Office, in a five-page letter to the senior center, said it was referring its findings to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office and Keith County Attorney’s Office for possible criminal prosecution for theft.

Attempts to reach Herman, who served two years as the center’s director, were not immediately successful Wednesday.

The senior center did not provide an official response to the audit. But a spokesperson for the center said Wednesday that it was in the process of negotiating with Herman about the alleged overpayments.

 </figure>Paul Hammel<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/state-audit-claims-senior-center-manager-in-ogallala-overpaid-herself/">Nebraska Examiner</a>LINCOLN — The Nebraska State Auditor’s Office on Wednesday accused the former director of an Ogallala senior center of improperly paying herself more than $11,000 upon leaving the job.According to an audit of the Keith County Senior Center, Jeanine “Jeanie” Herman paid herself $2,380 twice for unused vacation leave upon her exit in March 2023.In addition, Herman obtained checks of $7,480 for unused sick leave, even though the center didn’t pay for unused sick leave, and other checks for $1,360 for “Vacation Salary” and “Sick Salary” that also were not allowed. None of the payments was approved by the center’s board of directors, the auditor noted.The Auditor’s Office, in a five-page letter to the senior center, said it was referring its findings to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office and Keith County Attorney’s Office for possible criminal prosecution for theft.Attempts to reach Herman, who served two years as the center’s director, were not immediately successful Wednesday.The senior center did not provide an official response to the audit. But a spokesperson for the center said Wednesday that it was in the process of negotiating with Herman about the alleged overpayments.

On Tuesday, 1-30-24, at 11:10 P.M. North Platte Police officers were investigating a felony Protection Order violation.&nbsp; The alleged offender was Jordan Bohman.&nbsp; Police officers located his vehicle leaving the Flying J Truck Stop.&nbsp; They attempted to stop Bohman, who was driving a 2019 Ford Fusion.&nbsp; Bohman refused to stop, and officer pursued him, west bound on I-80.&nbsp; They terminated the pursuit west of North Platte and put out a BOLO for the vehicle. &nbsp;

A deputy sheriff located the vehicle on I-80 near the Hershey interchange.&nbsp; He attempted to stop the vehicle and initiated a pursuit.&nbsp; Dispatch advised all officers that the driver had been talking to his mother on the phone and told her that he had a gun, and he was going to kill himself and law enforcement. &nbsp;The pursuit continued and the vehicle left I-80 at the Sutherland exit and continued through Sutherland to 831 North Walnut, Sutherland.&nbsp; It was later confirmed that he has been living at that address.&nbsp; 

Deputies and NSP troopers gave commands for Bohman to exit the vehicle, but he refused.&nbsp; After extensive negotiations with Bohman, officers approached the vehicle, broke the driver's window and removed Bohman from the vehicle.&nbsp; It was at this time that they noticed that Bohman had used a large boot knife to stab himself.&nbsp; Officers rendered aid until Sutherland Rescue arrived and transported Bohman to the hospital.&nbsp; 

Reports have been filed with the Lincoln County Attorney and an arrest warrant is expected.&nbsp; Bohman remains in the hospital at this time.&nbsp;

Pursuit leads to an arrest in Sutherland

LINCOLN — For a second time, state lawmakers debated Tuesday whether Nebraska needs to pursue adopting permanent daylight saving time or join two states that have year-round standard time.

The debate pits golfers and broadcasters, who support the added evening sunshine of DST, against health experts who argue that our biological clocks and sleep patterns work best on standard time.

Under Legislative Bill 143, Nebraska would forego the annual “fall-back and spring-forward” changes to daylight saving time and adopt it year round — but only if three bordering states also make the change and the U.S. Congress approves.

State Sen. Steve Erdman of Bayard has introduced an amendment requiring the state to adopt year-round standard time, like Arizona and Hawaii.

He cited research from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine indicating that the “abrupt” switching of clocks every spring and fall causes an increase in heart attacks, mood disorders and auto crashes.

But permanent daylight saving time is the worst option, healthwise, Erdman said, and health concerns trump added sunshine for recreation.

“Our biological clocks work best on standard time … because that’s what God created,” he said.

Lincoln Sen. Danielle Conrad assumed sponsorship of LB 143 after its previous sponsor, Sen. Tom Briese, resigned to become state treasurer. Her primary goal is to end the annual clock changes in spring and fall.

She added, however, that the golf industry and state broadcasters are concerned about switching to permanent standard time and making Nebraska “an outlier” with other states.

Nineteen states, including neighboring Colorado and Wyoming, have adopted proposals to switch to permanent daylight saving time, pending congressional approval.

Switching to permanent standard time, Erdman pointed out, does not require an OK from Congress, and such congressional approval for permanent daylight time is iffy.

Legislators adjourned debate for the day Tuesday before getting to a vote on Erdman’s amendment or LB 143. Debate could resume as early as Wednesday

Local school districts in cooperation with ESU 16 are sponsoring an opportunity for parents of preschool children to participate in Child Find Screenings. This spring semester will be made available in each school district at the request of parents.

Child Find is a screening program for preschool children between the ages of birth and twenty-one. Professionals will be available to answer questions from parents regarding their preschool child's speech and language development, motor development, social/emotional development, hearing and learning skills. 

Parents who suspect their child (0-5) may need special help in these areas are encouraged to call their school district. The local school district will arrange for evaluation in cooperation with ESU 16. Evaluation will be done at a time and place convenient for the family.

Children between the ages of five and twenty-one who reside in Arthur, Grant, Hooker, Keith, Lincoln. Logan, McPherson, Perkins and Thomas counties may be referred to the school's Student Assistance Team. The Student Assistance Team provides suggestions for accommodation/modification. This referral may result in an evaluation for special help. Parents should contact their local school district to request this referral.
