The North Platte Community College Theater Department will host open auditions for its spring play next month.

The play, “Plan 9 from Outer Space,” is adapted from the science fiction horror film of the same name from the 1950s that was produced, written and directed by Ed Wood.

The plot focuses on aliens seeking to stop humanity from creating a doomsday weapon that could destroy the universe. The extraterrestrials come up with “Plan 9,” a scheme to resurrect Earth’s dead. The aliens hope that by causing chaos, humans will listen to them, and if not, there will be no choice but to destroy mankind with zombie armies.

“’Plan 9 from Outer Space,’ is the epitome of ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ cinema,” said NPCC Theater Instructor Ritch Galvan, who will direct the play. “It is an unintentionally hilarious sci-fi ‘thriller’ from anti-genius Ed Wood that is celebrated for its staggering ineptitude. This stage adaption will be part homage and part mockery of the cult classic film.”

There are parts in the play for up to six men and six women ages 16 and older. Technical crew positions are also available. No previous acting experience is required.

Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd. Those unable to attend at that time can contact Galvan at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:galvanr@mpcc.edu">galvanr@mpcc.edu</a>&nbsp;to discuss possible alternatives.

Rehearsals will begin Feb. 19 and continue through the performance dates April 2-4.&nbsp;

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024, in Room 200 of the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Ben Lashley started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Lashley, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Cynthia Duncan, Ted Klug Jr., Kim Korgan, Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller, Tyler Pribbeno and Tricia Schaffer.

MCC student trustee Graci Nelson and NPCC student trustee Reece Halley were absent and excused. NPCC student Dylan LaVante represented Reece Halley at the meeting.

a. The board elected the following officers:&nbsp;Cynthia Duncan as board chair; Kim Korgan as vice chair; Kirk Crawley as secretary/treasurer and Matthew Broz as assistant secretary/treasurer. Ernie Mehl and Kent Miller will be the board’s Nebraska Community College Association (NCCA) representatives.

a. MPCC board members completed a form indicating any potential conflicts of interest that could affect decisions regarding college matters.

4. OPEN FORUM (Comments from students, faculty, staff, public and Board)

a. Dylan LaVante provided an update on student activities in North Platte.

b. The Board was introduced to Tammy Higgins, Business and Community Education administrative assistant.

c. Ted Klug Jr. thanked Ben Lashley for his service as Board chair.

5. CONSENT ITEMS.&nbsp;On a single consent motion, the board approved:

a. Minutes from the Dec. 20 Board Work Session and Regular Meeting

a. The Board approved bills for December in the amount of $2,728,290.19.

b. The Board approved the following date and/or location changes for 2024 Board meetings: 1) Move the May 15 meeting to May 22 and hold the meeting at the Valentine Campus. 2) Cancel the June Board meeting. 3) Move the Sept. 18 meeting to Sept. 25. 4) Move the Oct. 16 meeting to Oct. 23.

c. The Board approved a bid to purchase windows and exterior doors for the McDonald-Belton Building from Larry’s Glass of North Platte in the amount of $133,551.

d. The Board approved the Mid-Plains Faculty Association (MPFA) negotiated agreement as presented, which includes a 4.25% total compensation increase for the 2024-25 contract year.

e. The Board approved a five-year contract for Jenzabar Financial Aid software and associated professional services in the amount of $232,180 from Jenzabar, Inc.

a. The Board heard a quarterly financial report from Vice President of Administrative Services Mike Steele.

b. Cabinet Reports: The Board heard reports from MPCC President Ryan Purdy, Vice President of Administrative Services Mike Steele, Director of Institutional Effectiveness Tad Pfeifer, Director of Human Resources Rebecca Wrage and Director of Institutional Advancement Jake Rissler.

a. The Board went into closed session at 7:10 p.m. to discuss real estate. The Board reconvened in open session at 7:44 p.m. No action was taken.

Upon hearing no further business, the Board moved to adjourn at 7:45 p.m. The next Board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in North Platte.

MPCC Board of Governors meeting wrap up report

BRADY, NEB. - A truck driver has died after his semi-truck left the road, entered the median and came to a stop under the Platte Bridge near Brady this morning on I-80. Three troopers were treated for smoke inhalation, Nebraska State Patrol officials say.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Nebraska State Patrol officials, approximately at 8:00am this morning, Lincoln County 911 received report of the crash on I-80. The crash occurred near mile marker 201, east of Brady. The semi-truck was pinned under the Platte Bridge.&nbsp;

When first responders arrived at the scene of the accident, the semi-cab was fully engulfed in flames. Troopers were unsuccessful in reaching the semi-cab due to the smoke under the bridge. Once fire crews put the fire out, the driver was found deceased.

Three troopers were treated for smoke inhalation by Brady EMS according to NSP officials. I-80 closed westbound from Gothenburg after the accident occurred.

 According to Nebraska 511, I-80 westbound from Gothenburg is now open. All eastbound lanes are open while the left lane at mile marker 201 westbound is closed as crews are still on scene.&nbsp;

&nbsp;10:03 am Update: Crews are still on scene working the crash that occurred near Brady, according to NE 511, I-80 eastbound from MM 200 to MM 203 (22m E of North Platte), the left lane closed. I-80 westbound is still closed from Gothenburg.&nbsp;This is a developing story at this time and will update when more information is available.

One dead following Thursday morning crash on I-80 near Brady

&nbsp; The North Platte Police Department is looking for information on an incident that occurred sometime between December 20th and December 21st of 2023. During that time frame, an unknown subject took a BB gun and shot at a parked vehicle in the 700 block of E 11th St, hitting it 13 times.

NPPD looking for information on a incident that occurred in late December

&nbsp;(LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have responded to more than 2,000 weather-related incidents over the last 9 days. In addition, the Nebraska Department of Transportation plow operators from across the state worked from January 13 to January 16 to reopen 1,700 miles of highways that were closed due to the storm. These teams continue to work to widen lanes of traffic through the areas of greatest impact and assist drivers who become stranded on roadways across the state.&nbsp;

Both agencies are advising caution as the next round of snow arrives Thursday, and frigid wind chills return for the next several days. A Wind Chill Advisory takes effect for most of Nebraska starting Thursday. The National Weather Service also predicts that much of the state will experience new snowfall, though expected to be lighter than the two previous storms.

“The work that has been accomplished over the last 9 days is nothing short of amazing,” said Director Vicki Kramer. “The NDOT team has coordinated to shift resources to the areas hardest hit on our state system while also assisting with county requests. The work is not done as crews continue to tackle larger drifts, work on widening areas, and preparing for the next round of snow. Please continue to travel with caution and know before you go by using available resources from your favorite weather provider to road conditions at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">511.Nebraska.Gov</a>.”

Since January 8, while Nebraska experienced two major winter storms and extreme cold, NDOT and NSP continued working around the clock. NDOT plow crews have been able to open all roadways to travel, after many areas in eastern Nebraska received over a foot of snow between the two storms. State Troopers were also busy, helping 1,828 stranded motorists, responding to 93 crashes, and assisting other agencies with 133 additional incidents.

“While our teams have been busy during over the last week, our troopers and NDOT plow crews remain ready to help,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “If you have to travel, please be safe and stay aware of the conditions before hitting the road. If you do become stranded, call the NSP Highway Helpline immediately and connect with our dedicated dispatchers who can send help.”

NDOT and NSP urge all motorists to check&nbsp;<a href="http://www.511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">511.Nebraska.gov</a>&nbsp;or the 511 app and be prepared for continued winter driving conditions with the potential for new slick spots in areas with new precipitation. Any motorist who becomes stranded while traveling should stay in their vehicle and call for help immediately.

The NSP Highway Helpline can be reached at *55 or 800-525-5555 and connects motorists directly with an NSP dispatcher. Dispatchers have communication not only with troopers, but also with local agencies and tow operators. They can locate and dispatch the closest help available to assist stranded parties.”

Travelers should also restock their winter survival kit if items were used during last week’s storms. The kit should include items such as water, food, warm clothes, hats, gloves, cell phone charger, sand or gravel, ice scraper, shovel, and jumper cables.

On January 17th, 2024 at 11:53 P.M., Officers from the North Platte Police Department responded to Newberry Access on the report of an accident.&nbsp; It was found that the accident occurred near the Westbound I-80 on-ramp.&nbsp; A semi-truck was Northbound and attempted to turn left onto the Westbound on-ramp.

 A pick-up truck was Southbound on Newberry.&nbsp; The pickup truck ran into the right side of the semi-tractor.&nbsp; The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; The driver of the pickup truck was fifty-one-year-old, Jean Pierre Brownell of North Platte.&nbsp; The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. - The Testing Ag Performance Solutions (TAPS) awards banquet held on Saturday, January 13, was the culmination event for the program’s seventh year of farm management competitions. The TAPS program was created by University of Nebraska educators and specialists, as an innovative way of connecting producers to industry professionals and offering a way of testing out new, advancing technologies through farm management competitions facilitated in North Platte, Neb., at the West Central Research, Extension, and Education Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Despite the winter weather, the event was a night of interaction and celebration of the 2023 competitions,&nbsp; which included popcorn, sorghum, subsurface drip irrigated (SDI) corn, and sprinkler irrigated corn. The&nbsp; participants in each competition made their own individual input decisions for their plots located in the&nbsp; same field as fellow competitors. These decisions differed for each competition including crop insurance,&nbsp; hybrid and seeding rate, nitrogen timing and amount, irrigation timing and amount, insecticide, fungicide,&nbsp; and, lastly, marketing of their crop.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For the first time in the seven-year history of the program the competition fields located in North Platte&nbsp; were affected by hail, which ultimately resulted in changes to the remaining management decisions and&nbsp; the final results.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Awards were given in each competition for greatest grain yield, highest input use efficiency, and most&nbsp; profitable. These designations came with a cash prize, along with a plaque, oversized check, and&nbsp; personalized TAPS apparel item.&nbsp;

The sorghum contest, in its sixth year, included both a dryland and irrigated portion, which were relocated&nbsp; this year to the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center near Grant, Neb. There were 18 teams that&nbsp; competed. The team that included Brandon Rimpley of Orleans, Neb, and Ron Robison of Alma, Neb.,&nbsp; earned all three of the top honors for yield, efficiency, and profitability.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The program’s newest competition, the irrigated popcorn competition had 13 teams compete. The winners&nbsp; in the popcorn competition included: Roger Lansman of Ord, Neb., for the Greatest Yield award; Nate&nbsp;

Freitag of Byron, Neb., area took home the Highest Input Use Efficiency accolade; and AK Acres from&nbsp; Imperial, Neb., won the award for Most Profitable.&nbsp;

In the fifth year of the SDI corn competition, 16 teams competed. The award winners in the SDI corn competition included: Lorn Dizmang of Dizmang Ag in Moorefield, Neb., for the Greatest Yield award the Rattlesnake Boys from Wood River, Neb., took home the Highest Input Use Efficiency accolade; and&nbsp; Jamey Balthazor and Dan Fitts from Scottsbluff and Gering, Neb., won the award for Most Profitable.&nbsp; The Rattlesnake Boys team consisted of Kevin &amp; Amy Harsch, Jay Johnson, and Jeremy Gewecke.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The seventh year of the sprinkler corn competition had 38 teams participate. The Greatest Grain Yield&nbsp; award was won by Tom Carpenter of Bartley, Neb. The Perkins Group team from the Grant, Neb., area&nbsp; earned the Highest Input Use Efficiency award. The team was made up of Brent Gloy, Bruce Young, Curt&nbsp; Richmond, Jeremy Hagan, Nick Turner, Pat McGreer, Shawn Turner, Ted Tietjen, and Troy Kemling.&nbsp; Kenny Reinke of Neligh, Neb., won the award for Most Profitable.&nbsp;

The last award presented was the Outstanding TAPS Advocate, which honors an organization, person, or&nbsp; business that went above and beyond in supporting the UNL-TAPS program. This year, the award&nbsp; recipient was Tracy Zink of Indianola, Nebr. Since the moment Zink heard about the TAPS program, she&nbsp; has not only chosen to participate, but also to share what she has learned, invite others to join the program&nbsp; and promoted TAPS across many avenues that she engages in across the state and nationally.&nbsp;

&nbsp; January 21st through January 28th is National Passenger Safety Week.&nbsp; National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Statistics from 2020 show that 6,275 passengers were killed in vehicle crashes.&nbsp; Twenty-four percent of deaths in cars, SUVs, pickups, vans and minivans were passengers.&nbsp; Fifty-six percent of teenage passengers died in crashes in which cars were driven by other teenagers and 15% of passengers killed in crashes, of all ages, occurred when a teenager was driving.&nbsp; 

Passengers can make a difference by stopping friends and loved ones from driving drugged, drunk or distracted whenever possible and refusing to ride with anyone who is drugged, drunk or distracted.&nbsp; Drivers can make a difference by ensuring their passengers are properly restrained.&nbsp; Additional passenger safety information can be found at nationalpassengersafety.org.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Lincoln Logan McPherson Extension Office is offering the following Private Pesticide Applicator’s Certification Trainings:

Please call the Extension Office at least 1 day prior to the training so we can be sure to have enough materials and spaces for the training.&nbsp; Listen to the radio for weather cancellations.&nbsp; Please note the cost of the Training Classes is&nbsp;$60&nbsp;per applicator.&nbsp;CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING THE TRAINING PER THE NEBRASKA DEPARMENT OF AGRICULTURE.&nbsp;

Private applicators will be required to add categories to their license to perform soil (01A) or structural/non-soil fumigation&nbsp; (11).&nbsp; Private applicators who wish to apply restricted use pesticides (RUPs) by aircraft&nbsp; (including drones) will be required to obtain a commercial or non-commercial license and add the Aerial Pest Control category (12).&nbsp; Private applicators categories are added by passing the category exam at any Nebraska Department of Agriculture commercial/noncommercial applicator testing session.&nbsp; Exams will not be offered during private applicator training.

Please watch the mail for your State of Nebraska letter that needs to be completed and brought to the&nbsp;training.&nbsp; You will also owe $25 for a 3-year license to the State of Nebraska after the training by mail (watch for postcard).&nbsp;&nbsp;Remember to contact the office one day prior to the session by e-mail at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:rsaner2@unl.edu" target="_blank">rsaner2@unl.edu</a>&nbsp;or by phone at 308-532-2683 Lincoln Logan McPherson.

LINCOLN — A series of meetings has been scheduled to gather public input and provide a progress report on the state’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Last year, Nebraska was awarded a $3 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Inflation Reduction Act to develop and implement a “priority climate action plan” and a “comprehensive climate action plan” to reduce emissions.

At the public meetings, a short presentation about the program will be presented, and emission reduction measures brought up in&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/state-takes-first-step-in-developing-plans-to-reduce-greenhouse-gas-emissions-in-nebraska/">stakeholder sessions held in late 2023</a>&nbsp;will be discussed.

The public can weigh in on the measures, ask questions and provide input and comment on proposed priority rankings by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy.

The state’s tentative list of priority measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions must be submitted by March 1.

North Platte: Mid-Plains Community College, North Campus, Rooms 105 and 107, 1101 Halligan Drive, Jan. 31, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The Hot Sheets: January 16th, 2023

NORTH PLATTE - Winter weather is impacting the region with snow and a wind chill warning in effect until tomorrow at noon (CST) according to the National Weather Services. Many schools in the area have closed for the day, late starts and cancelled activities due to the weather.&nbsp;

A wind chill warning which has blasted Nebraska since late last week will bring in a chilly Monday and Tuesday morning for the region. The National Weather Service says frostbite can occur if outside in dangerous weather conditions for a long period of time.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Over the weekend, many semi-trucks and cars were stranded due to blowing snow and extreme cold temperatures causing vehicles to not operate. With the snow moving across the state, roads may become slick and covered.

If motorists are stranded in cold temperatures, the Nebraska State Patrol says if you get stranded, stay in your vehicle and call *55. &nbsp; The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a semi-trailer fire. Department responded with One Engine, One Heavy Rescue, and Two Command. The fire was under control within 5 minutes of arrival. The lone operator of the vehicle was asleep in the tractor at the time of the fire and was alerted by someone pulling in for fuel. 

Together the two were able to disconnect the trailer as well as alert operators of nearby vehicles to get moved before the fire could spread. Temperature at the time of the fire was -7°. Crews returned to the station at 04:29.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sidney Fire Fighters battled semi-trailer fire early Sunday morning

Edit from ORAC: Missoula Children's Theater auditions for K-12 students have been postponed until Tuesday, January 16, from 4-6 p.m. at Prairie View School (Small Gym) due to the frigid, icy conditions!

OGALLALA - The Missoula Children's Theatre heads to Ogallala and invites area students to try out for Peter and Wendy. Tryouts are this Monday from 4:00-6:00pm MT at Prairie View Elementary School and tryouts will be held in the small gym. Tryouts are open to any student K-12 and all area students are welcome to tryout. 50-60 students will be selected.&nbsp;Students must bring their permission slip with them to the tryouts.&nbsp;

Students selected must be able to attend all the sessions throughout the week that the Missoula Children's Theatre will host. This includes workshop sessions and all practices. The event is being hosted by the Ogallala&nbsp;Regional Arts Council and the Ogallala Optimists.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tryouts are open to any student K-12 and all area students are welcome to tryout. 50-60 students will be selected.&nbsp;Students must bring their permission slip with them to the tryouts.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Students selected must be able to attend all the sessions throughout the week that the Missoula Children's Theatre will host. This includes workshop sessions and all practices. PODCAST - Missoula Children's Theatre coming to Ogallala, tryouts now Tuesday due to weather

All Call County tones dispatched for structure fire inside Ogallala city limits.

Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department units: Command 60, Engine 31, Ladder 50, Rescue 1. Ogallala Police Department and Keith County Sherrif's Office handled traffic reroute and diversion as well as initial contact with adjacent residents for evacuation. Paxton units: Paxton 36 w/4FF Brule units: Command 62, Utility 60, Engine 33. Keystone Lemoyne Fire Department units: Command 60, Engine 30, Utility 62. Keith County EMS units: MAC 60, MAC 1, MAC 2, KC EMG. Keith County Emergency Operations Center made initial dispatch and relayed resource requests. Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary brought hot beverages and assisted in rehab. A Structure (residential wood frame) with flame showing from windows and front door on arrival, all occupants out. FF extinguished the main fire in approximately 25 minutes. Salvage and overhaul were extensive due to interior conditions, structural integrity issues, and further hampered by the freezing temperatures. Additional MA for overhaul personnel called in from Grant and Big Springs. No injuries were reported to IC. Structure is standing but not habitable.&nbsp;<figure>
