NORTH PLATTE — North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher joined the North Platte Post Tuesday morning to recap the final regular City Council meeting of 2025, highlighting key actions and updates for residents.

The meeting, held Monday evening, addressed routine city operations, land annexations, and a proposed commercial solar farm. Mayor Kelliher described the session as “short and efficient,” lasting roughly 15 minutes.

City Operations and Sanitation Updates
The council approved the purchase of two semi-tractor trailers for the city’s sanitation department from Floyd’s Trucking, at a cost of $252,879. These vehicles are used to transport collected trash to the landfill near Ogallala.

In addition, the council authorized a contract extension with local entrepreneur Ryan Kuhlman for the hauling and remanufacturing of yard and tree waste from the city transfer station. Mayor Kelliher said the arrangement not only supports a local business but also turns a former city expense into a modest revenue stream.

Land Annexation
Council members adopted Ordinance 4242, annexing 11 government-owned parcels of land into North Platte’s city limits. Mayor Kelliher explained this action is part of an ongoing effort to unify city boundaries and fill small gaps in the city’s annexation map. 

“It’s all government-owned property, so no one is objecting,” he noted.

Infrastructure Financing
The council also approved a resolution authorizing a $317,319.83 warrant payment to Paulsen Inc. for paving work on area streets. Mayor Kelliher praised the company’s work, saying the payment reflects the city’s commitment to maintaining quality infrastructure.

Solar Farm Conditional Use Permit Delayed
The council postponed consideration of a conditional use permit for a proposed commercial solar farm near Victoria Lane and East State Farm Road. Mayor Kelliher explained that with three council members absent due to illness, he wanted to ensure a full council is present before discussing a major project like this.

Council Leadership
Similarly, the election of the council president for 2026 was delayed until the next meeting. Mayor Kelliher confirmed that Mr. Nistley has been elected to the position, adding that a full council should be present for votes on important leadership roles.

Public Engagement
During the meeting, a local citizen requested guidance on how to initiate a public hearing. Mayor Kelliher encouraged residents to submit requests directly to the mayor’s office, noting that public hearings must meet certain guidelines and be within the council’s authority to address.

Mayor’s Holiday Message
Mayor Kelliher also shared a message of gratitude and community spirit for the holiday season. He thanked the City Council, volunteer boards and committees, city employees, businesses, non-profits, and residents for their contributions throughout the year. “As we gather with family and friends this Christmas season, may we be reminded of the values that unite us—service, generosity, and a shared commitment to one another,” he said.

Mayor Kelliher concluded the interview wishing North Platte residents a Merry Christmas and a happy and hopeful New Year.

North Platte, Neb. - Angela Hipp of Community Connections has been named The Post and Prairie Friends &amp; Flowers Community Hero for Kids this month, an honor recognizing her dedication to mentoring and supporting young people in North Platte.

Hipp said receiving the recognition was meaningful and affirming. “It’s amazing. It feels wonderful because, you know, we all want to be recognized for the things that we’re passionate about,” she said. “And I’m really passionate about my job, and I love the people that I work with and the kids that I work with. And when somebody thinks that I’m doing well with it, that feels really good.”

Hipp has been with Community Connections for 10 years and said the award prompted reflection on her journey and her connection to the community. “Maybe sometimes at 10 years, you start to think about, like, the past and how you’ve come through your job and where you’re at and your whole life,” she said. “And how much I love being a part of this community… and so feeling a lot more grounded in my community.”

As the coordinator of the mentoring program, Hipp explained her role focuses on connecting kids with mentors and building support systems. “I am the coordinator for the mentoring program,” she said. “And so I find mentors for kids… I find someone to spend some time with a child to hang out. But I also plan activities and gatherings for all of us so that we feel like we’re all a part of something together.”

Hipp said one of the most meaningful indicators of impact comes from annual surveys completed by youth and mentors. “Seeing what kids say when they can say it completely anonymous… really stands out to me,” she said. “They talk about what it has meant to them to be a part of the mentoring program and what it’s meant to have a mentor.”

She added that mentoring helps kids feel more connected and supported. “Just for them to have someone to talk to and feel like somebody cares about them,” Hipp said.

In addition to coordinating the program, Hipp is also a mentor herself. “I do. I have one mentee,” she said, noting they have been matched for nearly three years. Reflecting on the experience, Hipp added, “Those kids, you’re not just changing their lives, but they’re changing your life in the process.”

Hipp said being described as a safe person for kids aligns with the purpose of her work. “I think that’s the whole point of what I’m doing,” she said. “That I know there are kids that often feel like there’s not someone for them that they feel safe with… so we really try to create that space for them.”

Her passion for mentoring began years earlier while raising her daughters as a single parent. “I remembered thinking how much that would mean for my kids to have that extra support person in their life,” she said. “And I realized that all kids need that. They need to feel like somebody is recognizing who they are.”

Hipp said building trust with kids takes time and consistency. “It takes time and just showing up repeatedly,” she said. “A lot of dedication.”

Community Connections’ mentoring program has served North Platte for more than 20 years. Hipp said its strength lies in its mentors and flexibility. “One mentoring pair’s journey is going to look totally different than somebody else’s, and that’s OK,” she said.

Looking ahead, Hipp said the program continues to focus on youth mental health and positive development. “One of the things we’ve been doing… is really focusing on gratitude with our young people,” she said. “Looking at the positive things in their lives and looking at the positives in our community.”

When asked what message she would share with the community, Hipp emphasized the importance of everyday support. “I think that everybody needs to just approach their interactions with young people with a mentoring mindset,” she said. “There’s a lot of opportunities to show up for kids and make sure they know that they feel safe in our community.”

Lincoln County CASA is launching its first-ever Angel Tree program, offering community members an opportunity to brighten the holidays for local children in the foster care system.

“This is a new concept for Lincoln County CASA this year,” said Executive Director Janet Vath. “We have two locations. One at the First National Bank of Omaha, 201 North Dewey. Then we have one that is sponsored by the leadership of NebraskaLand Bank, downtown location, 121 North Dewey.”

Janet explained that participating is simple: “All you have to do is stop by the bank, grab an ornament off the tree. Each ornament includes a gift idea for a child in foster care, purchase a new gift, unopened. You may either return it wrapped or unwrapped, whichever you prefer.”

She added an important reminder: “Make sure that when you return that gift that you put the tag back on that present so we know which child it goes to. We have them all numbered and we know.”

Many ornaments remain available. “There’s still a lot of tags on both of the trees. Please come on down and take a tag and help support a child that may not get much for Christmas otherwise,” she said.

The tags represent a wide age range of children. “Anywhere from newborns to 18 years old.”

Janet also addressed concerns some donors have about not being able to buy every item listed on a tag. “The gift ideas on the tags are just ideas. Even if it’s one, one present off of that will make a child’s Christmas happy. They will at least have a present under the tree.”

CASA is asking donors to return gifts by December 15, though Janet noted, “The latest that we can accept them would be December 18th, so we can get them to the right places.”

Programs like the Angel Tree matter deeply, especially for children without advocates. “Some of these kids won’t have much of a Christmas if we don’t help out,” Janet said. She also explained that while Rotary helps cover CASA children already assigned advocates, the Angel Tree aims to assist those who don’t yet have one. “These are kids that do not have advocates that are in the court system that also need Christmas. And we try to look out for them, too.”

Beyond holiday giving, CASA is preparing for its next volunteer training session. “We are court-appointed special advocates for children in the court system. Advocates, we train 30 hours of training, which I do. Actually, we’re having a class starting in January,” Janet explained. “I’m hoping it’s going to be about eight, at least eight people so far have signed up. So I’m hoping it to be a very big class. But hey, we welcome anybody.”

Right now, the need is significant. “We have 42 children in the court system right now that need advocates. We try to do as many as we can. But without an advocate, we can’t give a child an advocate.”

Angel Tree ornaments are available now at FNBO and Nebraskaland Bank on Dewey Street. Gifts are due December 15.

She also explained that while Rotary helps cover CASA children already assigned advocates, the Angel Tree aims to assist those who don’t yet have one. “These are kids that do not have advocates that are in the court system that also need Christmas. And we try to look out for them, too.”</p><p>Beyond holiday giving, CASA is preparing for its next volunteer training session. “We are court-appointed special advocates for children in the court system. Advocates, we train 30 hours of training, which I do. Actually, we’re having a class starting in January,” Janet explained. “I’m hoping it’s going to be about eight, at least eight people so far have signed up. So I’m hoping it to be a very big class. But hey, we welcome anybody.”</p><p>Right now, the need is significant. “We have 42 children in the court system right now that need advocates. We try to do as many as we can. But without an advocate, we can’t give a child an advocate.”</p><p>Anyone interested in becoming a CASA volunteer or learning more about the Angel Tree program can reach Janet directly. “You can call our office or call me 308-386-8393. The Guardians of the Children’s annual Toy Drive, now in its 12th year, is underway and will continue through December 10th. The drive collects new, unwrapped toys for local children, with drop-off locations across the community, including First Interstate Bank, Nebraska Land Bank, First National Bank, Dollar General stores, Adams Bank and Trust, and even Bailey Yards.

“The support from the community has been amazing,” said Tuna, Treasurer of the Guardians of the Children Flatrock Chapter. “We’ve got boxes in banks, retail stores, churches, and even gift shops. If you can’t get a toy, monetary donations are welcome too. It really helps local kids have a brighter Christmas.”

In addition to the Toy Drive, North Platte residents and visitors can enjoy the dazzling Holiday Road light display on 10th Street, entering from Poplar. Already up and running, the display is synchronized to music and includes appearances by Santa, the Grinch, and festive performers. Tuna explained, “We’ll be out there on December 12th, 13th, 19th, and 20th from 6 to 9 p.m., directing traffic, handing out candy canes, and making sure everyone has a great time. It’s a lot of work to set it up, but seeing the smiles on kids’ faces makes it all worth it.”

The Holiday Road has become a cherished part of the community’s seasonal traditions. Tuna added, “We’ve been doing this with Corbin and Al’s Lock and Safe for six years now. It’s an amazing way to reach out to the community, bring families together, and just share a little bit of holiday magic.”

NORTH PLATTE — A holiday tradition nearly four decades in the making returns this weekend as the Heartland Singers present their annual Christmas concert, entitled "This Christmas", on Sunday, December 7 at 3 p.m. The performance will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Platte, a venue the choir has embraced for its intimate setting and close connection with the audience.

Now in its 39th year, the Heartland Singers continue to bring choral music to the community with the same spirit that inspired their founding. Charter member Michael Douty—one of only a few still performing since the group launched—says the concert remains a beloved kickoff to the holiday season for many local families.

“People often tell us this concert is their opening segue into Christmas,” Douty said. “We’ve done it so long that it’s become part of their tradition.”

This year’s program blends traditional carols with contemporary holiday arrangements. Highlights include Andrea Bocelli’s “The Greatest Gift,” chosen for its rich harmonies, and a “Medieval Christmas Fantasy” filled with madrigal-inspired sounds. A special nod to the anniversary of Pearl Harbor will also be featured through the “Irving Berlin Christmas” selection.

The choir performs under the direction of Chrisanne Bailey, whose emphasis on intention and energy helps shape the group’s sound each season. Accompanist Jennifer Smallcomb—known throughout the community—will also be featured on flute during a Silent Night/Away in a Manger arrangement, accompanied by Dr. Janet Evans on piano. Percussionist Julie Jong will join the ensemble as well.

While the music continues to evolve, the choir itself is in a rebuilding phase. Once boasting more than 70 members, the group now performs with around 30 to 35 singers, including just four tenors. Douty notes that COVID-19 took a toll on membership, and busy schedules often make participation difficult. As a result, the Heartland Singers are actively seeking new voices, especially men, with auditions expected in January for the spring concert cycle.

Rehearsals take place Sunday evenings for eight weeks leading up to each performance. “It’s really not a heavy time commitment,” Douty said. “Two hours a week—and we work hard during those two hours.”

Sunday’s concert is free to attend, with freewill donations accepted. Contributions help cover costs for the director, accompanist, and increasingly expensive sheet music licensing. In past years, Douty said, donations have even outperformed traditional ticket sales.

Lincoln County&nbsp; - Lincoln County residents saw a busy month in county government, with the Board of Commissioners addressing key infrastructure projects, public safety initiatives, and community service recognitions during November’s meetings. Commissioner Kent Weems provides insight on the discussions and decisions from the past four meetings.

The month kicked off on November 3, when the board reviewed claims, treasurer’s receipts, and several resolutions. One of the highlights was recognizing county employees for long-term service. 

“We try to go out of our way to recognize those milestones in public service,” Weems said. “You need quality people to serve in the public sector… when we get a good employee that takes care of things for five years, 10, 30, we like to get those folks a certificate. It doesn’t—it’s not a lot, but it does let them know that we do appreciate what they do.”

The board also considered rules and regulations for meetings. Weems described these as procedural rather than transformative. 

“If you look at the rules and regs that they gnashed their teeth over for months… everything in there is verbatim from the state statute,” he said. “Transparency doesn’t change. We have transparency just to the fact that we do comply with the Open Meetings Act.”

On November 10, the board tackled interlocal agreements with the city of North Platte, covering road maintenance and IT collaboration. 

Weems explained the practical side of these arrangements: “From a practical standpoint… one or the other entities already has equipment in that area… so why not put the blade down and push that snow?” 

On IT, he emphasized security concerns: “There’s a lot of nasty players in the world… who try to hack into public computer systems. So it’s vital that we work hand in hand with the city on IT.”

That same day, the board approved a manager change at Fast Stop 1155 in Sutherland and authorized a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Veterans Affairs. 

On the MOU, Weems said, “Our Veterans Service Officer… works tirelessly to help veterans through all the loopholes and jump all the hurdles to get benefits… it will remain confidential and will be treated along the HIPAA guidelines.”

The board also purchased a tandem snowplow truck for the Department of Roads. 

Weems noted the importance of durability and value: “We want to see you get the best, maximize the value of these big pieces of equipment… if you can get 20 years out of it, then maybe it’s worth it.”

During the November 17 meeting, right-of-way applications and subdivision proposals were reviewed, including the Clemens and Prairie View Estates subdivisions. 

Weems described these as largely procedural, with planning and zoning doing most of the heavy lifting: “By the time they get to us, it’s just a formality that we kind of give them our blessing… and say thank you for doing all the hard work and due diligence.”

Public safety initiatives were also addressed. 

Regarding the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over grant, Weems said, “We give wholeheartedly our blessing to say, go after those monies… we don’t want drunk drivers harming others and crossing the center line.” 

Bridge inspections, a routine but essential responsibility, were also discussed to ensure public safety and compliance: “You have to have those inspected… by certified folks, engineers that know how to evaluate the load values and determine that bridge is safe for the public to traverse.”

Finally, at the November 24 meeting, the board approved right-of-way permits for NCORPE and CenturyLink, both largely procedural matters to ensure proper installation and liability protection. The board also authorized a study for Viera Avenue, an issue stemming from previous disagreements over road maintenance. 

Weems explained, “Since the city’s made it clear that they’re not going to… take care of it, the first thing that’s required by statute is to have the traffic study… the conclusion will likely be that it’s in the best interest of Mr. Vieira and the county to vacate the road.”

Police service agreements with the village of Maxwell were also discussed. Weems noted that Maxwell has historically opted out of interlocal agreements, but the board continues to explore solutions for consistent public safety coverage.

Reflecting on the county’s priorities, Weems said, “We have two primary requirements under the state statute and that is public safety and infrastructure. Anything else is to some degree just an add-on… County government… a lot of what we are required to do comes from Lincoln. And again, we only have the formula that we establish property values and from that derive the resources necessary to run all the local subdivisions.”

One of the highlights was recognizing county employees for long-term service. </p><p>“We try to go out of our way to recognize those milestones in public service,” Weems said. “You need quality people to serve in the public sector… when we get a good employee that takes care of things for five years, 10, 30, we like to get those folks a certificate. It doesn’t—it’s not a lot, but it does let them know that we do appreciate what they do.”</p><p>The board also considered rules and regulations for meetings. Weems described these as procedural rather than transformative. </p><p>“If you look at the rules and regs that they gnashed their teeth over for months… everything in there is verbatim from the state statute,” he said. “Transparency doesn’t change. We have transparency just to the fact that we do comply with the Open Meetings Act.”</p><p>On November 10, the board tackled interlocal agreements with the city of North Platte, covering road maintenance and IT collaboration. </p><p>Weems explained the practical side of these arrangements: “From a practical standpoint… one or the other entities already has equipment in that area… so why not put the blade down and push that snow?” </p><p>On IT, he emphasized security concerns: “There’s a lot of nasty players in the world… who try to hack into public computer systems. So it’s vital that we work hand in hand with the city on IT.”</p><p>That same day, the board approved a manager change at Fast Stop 1155 in Sutherland and authorized a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Veterans Affairs. </p><p>On the MOU, Weems said, “Our Veterans Service Officer… works tirelessly to help veterans through all the loopholes and jump all the hurdles to get benefits… it will remain confidential and will be treated along the HIPAA guidelines.”</p><p>The board also purchased a tandem snowplow truck for the Department of Roads. </p><p>Weems noted the importance of durability and value: “We want to see you get the best, maximize the value of these big pieces of equipment… if you can get 20 years out of it, then maybe it’s worth it.”</p><p>During the November 17 meeting, right-of-way applications and subdivision proposals were reviewed, including the Clemens and Prairie View Estates subdivisions. </p><p>Weems described these as largely procedural, with planning and zoning doing most of the heavy lifting: “By the time they get to us, it’s just a formality that we kind of give them our blessing… and say thank you for doing all the hard work and due diligence.”</p><p>Public safety initiatives were also addressed. </p><p>Regarding the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over grant, Weems said, “We give wholeheartedly our blessing to say, go after those monies… we don’t want drunk drivers harming others and crossing the center line.” </p><p>Bridge inspections, a routine but essential responsibility, were also discussed to ensure public safety and compliance: “You have to have those inspected… by certified folks, engineers that know how to evaluate the load values and determine that bridge is safe for the public to traverse.”</p><p>Finally, at the November 24 meeting, the board approved right-of-way permits for NCORPE and CenturyLink, both largely procedural matters to ensure proper installation and liability protection. The board also authorized a study for Viera Avenue, an issue stemming from previous disagreements over road maintenance. </p><p>Weems explained, “Since the city’s made it clear that they’re not going to… take care of it, the first thing that’s required by statute is to have the traffic study… the conclusion will likely be that it’s in the best interest of Mr. Vieira and the county to vacate the road.”</p><p>Police service agreements with the village of Maxwell were also discussed. Weems noted that Maxwell has historically opted out of interlocal agreements, but the board continues to explore solutions for consistent public safety coverage.</p><p>Reflecting on the county’s priorities, Weems said, “We have two primary requirements under the state statute and that is public safety and infrastructure. Anything else is to some degree just an add-on… County government… a lot of what we are required to do comes from Lincoln. And again, we only have the formula that we establish property values and from that derive the resources necessary to run all the local subdivisions.”</p>

According to Gary Person of the North Platte Area Development Corporation (NPADC), one of the city’s biggest challenges isn’t construction or capital: it’s getting more people into the workforce.

Right now, NPADC estimates that just 62 percent of the traditional working-age population (ages 16–65) is actively in the labor force, leaving nearly two in five residents unengaged — a statistic that could become a bottleneck as economic activity surges.

“Our workforce participation rate is solid, but it’s not where it needs to be for the scale of growth that’s coming,” Person says. He points to booming sectors — hospitality is expanding rapidly, with about 25 new restaurants over the past three years — and says companies are already feeling the strain.

Beyond low unemployment, Person emphasizes the importance of making work appealing: “We want people to feel self-worth, to feel like they’re contributing — not just a paycheck,” he said. Strategic planning, he notes, isn’t just about building homes and roads — it’s also about training, ensuring competitive wages, and building a welcoming, inclusive community. Childcare is part of that equation, too: without reliable childcare, many potential workers can’t commit.

It’s a balancing act: build enough housing, attract enough business, but also ensure that people can and want to work. For leaders in North Platte, that’s the real test of long-term growth.

North Platte, Neb. – The City Council convened Tuesday evening for its November 18 meeting, tackling a mix of routine items and major agenda points affecting the city’s development and services.&nbsp;

The meeting opened with standard procedures, including the Pledge of Allegiance and invocation. Mayor Brandon Kelliher noted, “We always appreciate those folks that come and do the invocation for us…they do a really nice job for us, so we appreciate that.”

On the consent agenda, the council approved the termination of a real estate option agreement with 308 BMX, Inc., a group that had attempted to create a BMX track in North Platte. 

Kelliher said, “They really did a lot of work and really tried hard to get it going, but they weren’t able to raise enough money. The group may reform in the future and try again at some point.” The city will incorporate a mobile pump track purchased by the group into Curley Park near Madison Middle School, which Kelliher described as “a great feature…with a dedication sign for the folks that helped provide that park.”

The council also approved interlocal advanced life support (ALS) agreements with nearby communities, ensuring coordinated support for emergency services. 

“This is a great service that our local first responders provide," Kelliher explained, "they want to protect people not just in North Platte, but people in the whole area.”

Lease agreements for two cell tower sites were another discussion point. Kelliher noted the evolving nature of cell technology and what the future may look like, saying, “We’ve all really only been carrying around cell phones for about 20 years…so what will it look like 20 years from now?”

Annexation ordinances covering several parcels along East 6th Street and other areas also drew attention. 

Kelliher emphasized the city’s goal of community uniformity: “The main reason that we’re looking at annexing this area…is to have uniformity in our community. It allows us to push the edge of the influence out on the community and help to define what’s allowed in those areas.” 

Concerns about drainage and water tables were discussed, with the city planning to collaborate with Nebraska Park Roads and, potentially, Union Pacific Railroad to address potential issues. The annexations are on their second reading and will return for final consideration at the December 2 meeting.

In a public hearing, the council approved the purchase of property at 2001 East 2nd Street, a fire-damaged and long-vacant home. 

Kelliher explained, “The neighbors had begun to complain because there were things living in houses that shouldn’t be in houses when they get abandoned…she [the owner] was interested in selling, kind of relieved to have it resolved.”

Finally, the council discussed solar power generation. While solar remains popular, Kelliher said, “Connecting it to the city power supply…would increase the average citizen’s bill by about 5–6%. It’s very risky, and we just can’t make the numbers work. Adding that additional cost over the next couple of years isn’t a good move for the citizens of North Platte.” 

He added that the council would reconsider solar in the future if a larger opportunity arose, particularly if it involved significant job creation or economic development.

Kelliher also highlighted the upcoming dedication of the new skate park at Centennial Park on Friday, noting that the council president will stand in for him. “We’ll hopefully have some skaters out there showing us their stuff, and I’m sure they’re going to have a great time,” Kelliher said.

The council’s next meeting is scheduled for December 2, when annexations and other ongoing matters will be discussed.

North Platte, Neb. - North Platte families, get ready to lace up your sneakers! The North Platte Elks Lodge is hosting its annual Hoop Shoot contest, giving local kids a chance to show off their basketball skills in a fun and friendly competition.

Lenny Hassel of the Elks Lodge shared the details on the upcoming event. The Hoop Shoot is a free throw contest open to students ages 8 to 13, with age determined as of April 1, 2026. Participants will shoot 25 free throws each, and both the winner and runner-up in each division will receive a medal.

The contest will be held Sunday, December 7, at Adams Middle School Gym, 1200 McDonald Rd. Girls will take the court at 1:00 PM, followed by the boys at 2:00 PM. Hassel explained that the event typically lasts about an hour per division but could run slightly longer if more kids show up.

Hassel emphasized the Elks Lodge’s commitment to youth programs, saying the contest is free to ensure all children can participate. 

“We’ve been doing this for over 40 years,” he said. “The Elks Lodge has various youth programs, from scholarships to dictionary distributions for third graders in Lincoln County. We want to get kids involved and active.”

Nationwide, over 2.5 million students participate in Hoop Shoot contests every year. Locally, last year’s event welcomed roughly 30 to 35 children, though Hassel hopes to see even more this year. With multiple baskets set up, organizers are ready to accommodate as many participants as possible.

No pre-registration is required—kids can simply show up and sign in, making it easy for families to join. Every participant will leave with a memorable experience, and winners will receive recognition for their efforts.

North Platte, Neb. — The North Platte Public Schools Foundation continues to make a meaningful impact on students, providing support that extends far beyond the classroom. From scholarships and classroom grants to arts programs and food assistance, the foundation is helping students succeed in school and in life.

Terri Burchell, representing the foundation, highlighted the upcoming Scholarship Day for the Class of 2026, set for Thursday. 

“We noticed fewer students are applying for scholarships... We decided to have kind of a scholarship day and create that awareness and have the students come in if they’ve got questions on how to fill things out,” Burchell said. “A lot of times I do think it’s the parents that help them quite a bit... we try to be there as another adult in their life helping them get their reference letters and see which scholarships are applicable for them.”

This year, the foundation alone is awarding more than $23,000 in scholarships, ranging from $100 to $2,000. 

“At least it buys a book or something to help with their education... That’s why the donors started that and why they wanted to do that,” Burchell said. The scholarships help students pursue higher education at institutions such as Mid-Plains Community College, WyoTech, the University of Nebraska, and Creighton University.

Beyond scholarships, the foundation supports a variety of programs that enhance student learning and engagement. The student council is running a contest to collect items for school and local food pantries, encouraging participation from all grade levels. Donations contribute to local pantries as well as the school’s own food program, helping to address food insecurity among students.

The foundation also awards Teacher Reach Grants, funding creative classroom projects that enrich the curriculum. Past grants have supported theater programs, homework incentive programs, and field trips such as a high school visit to see the Philadelphia Orchestra in Lincoln.

Burchell noted the importance of community partnerships in expanding the foundation’s reach. Local businesses such as Fat Dogs and Quick Stuff have helped double the number of grants awarded, providing students with more opportunities to explore the arts and other hands-on experiences.

One particularly exciting project was the refurbishment of a grand piano at North Platte High School, funded by donations from alumni and local supporters. “It’s amazing to see something come full circle—from alumni who played on it to students who will now enjoy it for years to come,” Burchell said.

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation remains committed to helping students thrive academically, creatively, and socially. Through scholarships, classroom grants, arts programs, and essential support services, the foundation is shaping opportunities for students while strengthening ties within the community.

North Platte, NE – Midwest Championship Fighting (MCF) is set to bring a night of intense MMA action and community celebration to North Platte with its upcoming “Salute to Veterans V” event at the D&amp;N Event Center.&nbsp;

Russ Jones, MCF President, says the event offers a mix of fight levels rarely seen in one night. “We start with street fights—guys literally off the streets—then move to amateur matches, amateur title fights, and finally professional bouts,” he explained. “The lower-level fights are just as important as the high-level fights because that’s how fighters get to the top.” Some street fighters even receive free training if they want to continue competing, giving local athletes an opportunity to develop skills and find a constructive outlet.

Veterans Honored
The “Salute to Veterans” program, now in its fifth year, invites over 200 veterans to attend free of charge with VIP seating. The event includes a flag salute at the start and a special parade of veterans during intermission. “We started this program to give veterans a place to gather, celebrate, and be recognized for their service,” Jones said. The initiative also creates a space where veterans of all ages can connect, fostering camaraderie and community.

“These kids are looking for an outlet, a brotherhood,” Jones said. “Seeing fighters step into the cage is a moment you can’t put a value on.”

PAXTON, Neb. — What started as a small student idea has blossomed into one of Paxton’s most hands-on community agricultural projects. Paxton High School junior Landon Drews is preparing to host the second annual Harvest Day, part of his student-led Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project through FFA.

Landon first began the project as a freshman, taking on the challenge of managing a test plot on local farmland — a bold move that’s since grown into a full-scale, community-supported event.

“When we started, I was just supposed to farm the ground,” Drews explained. “Then my brother mentioned doing a test plot, and from there I knew I wanted to make it big.”

Last year’s plot featured six seed dealers and multiple corn varieties. This year, Landon expanded the project to include no-till and strip-till test plots with seven seed dealers — each providing a single variety for comparison. The project, he said, gives seed companies valuable data while helping him learn the science and strategy behind crop production.

“It’s a dryland test plot, which is pretty rare,” Drews said. “Most are irrigated, but I wanted to see how these varieties perform under real dryland conditions. It’s been awesome to watch it all come together.”

Support from area businesses like Hi-Line Co-op and Clauss Equipment in Ogallala has made the project possible, assisting with spraying and harvesting. Drews said he’s grateful for their continued backing — and for the enthusiasm from the community.

The highlight of the year is Harvest Day, happening Tuesday, November 4, starting with elementary student visits around 9 a.m., followed by a community hamburger feed from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (MT).

Students will have a chance to see and touch machinery they might not encounter otherwise.</p><p>“I wanted to get kids involved and show them what agriculture looks like up close,” Drews said. “It’s amazing how many kids from rural schools haven’t had that opportunity. Maybe it sparks something in them to go into farming or ag careers.”</p><p>Landon’s leadership has already made an impact — younger students recognize him in the halls and ask how “their” test plot is doing.</p><p>“It shows me I might be a role model for them,” he said. “This project has really helped me grow as a leader.”</p><p>Looking ahead, Drews said he and his seed partners are already brainstorming what next year’s plot might hold — possibly dryland soybeans. He’s also applying for a proficiency degree, a prestigious FFA recognition awarded to top student projects across Nebraska.</p><p>For now, his focus is on celebrating this year’s success. “I invite everyone out to Harvest Day,” Drews said. “Come see what we’ve built, enjoy a hamburger, and learn a little bit about agriculture.”</p><p>Harvest Day 2025 will be held Tuesday, November 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (MT) at the Paxton test plot.
