(McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, a crack sealing project will begin Feb. 10 on US-83, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Crack sealing is a process of cleaning and filling open joints and cracks in the surface with sealant to prevent the entry of moisture and debris. 

State maintenance forces will be performing a crack seal from reference post 1.5 to reference post 13.79, south of McCook. The work is anticipated to take 14 days. Traffic will be maintained with a pilot car and flaggers. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.

State maintenance forces will be performing a crack seal from reference post 11.91 to reference post 18.45, seven miles north of Benkelman. The work is anticipated to take 14 days. Traffic will be maintained with a pilot car and flaggers.

February 7, 2025 (North Platte, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested three people after locating 110 pounds of suspected methamphetamine and 85 pounds of suspected marijuana in traffic stops this week on Interstate 80.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, a trooper performed a traffic stop on a Kia Forte as it was traveling eastbound on I-80 near North Platte. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed several large packages of suspected methamphetamine inside suitcases in the trunk of the vehicle. The total weight of the methamphetamine was 110 pounds. Troopers also located a small amount of marijuana, suspected drug money, and four counterfeit $100 bills.

The driver, Yafet Kidane Berhe, 27, and passenger Douglas Cameron, 33, both of Toronto, Canada, were arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession with intent to deliver, possession of money for a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana – less than one ounce. Both men were lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

Thursday, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a trooper performed a traffic stop on a Volkswagen Jetta at it was traveling eastbound on I-80 near Overton. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

Troopers searched the vehicle and located 85 pounds of suspected marijuana concealed in trash bags in the trunk. Troopers also located a handgun.

The driver, Matthew Maly, 31, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was arrested for possession of marijuana – more than one pound, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm during a drug violation, no driver’s license, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was lodged in Dawson County Jail.

Troopers Find 110 LBs of Meth, 85 LBs of Marijuana in Traffic Stops near North Platte and Overton

North Platte, Neb., February 7, 2025 – On February 1, Great Plains Health became the&nbsp; seventh hospital in Nebraska to be recognized as a Pediatric Ready Hospital by the Nebraska&nbsp; Emergency Medical Services for Children Committee, marking a significant milestone for pediatric emergency care in the North Platte region.&nbsp;

This achievement is particularly significant as approximately 90% of children needing&nbsp; emergency care are first treated at local community emergency departments.&nbsp;

To earn this designation, Great Plains Health met rigorous standards in several key areas, including staff qualifications and training, quality improvement measures, pediatric-specific&nbsp; policies, continuing education programs, specialized equipment and supplies, and a commitment to ongoing process refinement.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Having the right equipment, protocols, and training in place for pediatric emergencies can&nbsp; make a critical difference in outcomes," said Dr. James Smith, emergency physician at Great&nbsp; Plains Health. "Our team has worked diligently to implement these pediatric-ready standards,&nbsp; ensuring we're prepared when children need emergency care."&nbsp;

Research shows that emergency departments participating in pediatric readiness initiatives&nbsp; have improved clinical outcomes, with critically ill and injured children experiencing lower&nbsp; mortality rates compared to those treated at facilities not associated with such initiatives.&nbsp; Studies indicate hospitals with high levels of pediatric readiness can reduce mortality risk by&nbsp; up to 76%.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte Community College will showcase career opportunities in the applied technology fields to local jobseekers Feb. 19.

The Spring 2025 Applied Technologies Job Fair will be from 10 a.m. to noon in Rooms 105, 107 and 109 of the W.W. Wood Building on the NPCC North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, in North Platte. The event is free and open to the public.

The fair will give prospective employees a look at current and upcoming job openings and will allow them to network with representatives from area businesses.

An emphasis will be put on electrical, building construction, welding, HVAC, automotive, auto body, diesel and CDL fields.

Guests are encouraged to take résumés with them. At their discretion, employers may choose to interview candidates on site.

Attorney General Mike Hilgers announced on Monday that a Minatare woman who owns Campbell Pharmacy in Oshkosh, Nebraska, was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay&nbsp;$76,963.90&nbsp;in restitution to Nebraska Medicaid after pleading guilty to one count of filing false Medicaid claims.

Joan Kicken, 65, was charged with one count of Fraudulently Obtaining a Payment on Behalf of a Recipient of Medical Assistance, a class IV felony. The maximum punishment for that crime is two years of imprisonment. There is no minimum. A second charge of forgery was dismissed in return for her guilty plea. Additionally, her pharmacist’s license has been revoked.

A joint investigation by state and federal officials found that Kicken submitted false claims to Nebraska Medicaid for prescription drugs that were not authorized by a medical practitioner. She was paid $76,963.90 for those false claims.

This case was investigated by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Drug Enforcement Administration and prosecuted by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

The categories for these awards are: Excellent Service within a Hotel, Excellent Service within a Restaurant, Excellent Service within a Retail Establishment, Excellent Service at an Event, and Excellent Service within an Attraction. In addition to the five Excellence in Tourism awards, Volunteer of the Year and Hero of Tourism awards will be presented.&nbsp;

Annually, nearly 600,000 visitors will make the trip to North Platte. What attracts these visitors, keeps them coming back, and inspires them to tell their friends to visit North Platte? North Platte’s events and attractions are part of the equation, but the single most important factor in making visitors feel welcome and have a positive experience is excellent customer service.&nbsp;

The nominees for the Excellence in Customer Service Awards will be employees (or volunteers) in any of the above categories within Lincoln County who go above and beyond expectations. Laura Troshynski named North Platte’s new FNBO City Ambassador

(North Platte, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol SWAT Team have arrested one person following a standoff in Hitchcock County.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. Saturday, NSP received a request from the Hitchcock County Sheriff’s Office regarding an investigation in Stratton. The Sheriff’s Office had responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in which a subject had threatened a family member with a handgun. The victim was able to exit the residence and deputies determined that the subject was alone in the home, in the 800 block of Hamilton Street in Stratton.

The NSP SWAT Team was activated, along with NSP Crisis Negotiators and Drone Operators. Numerous attempts were made to communicate with the subject, but he did not respond. Troopers used drone and robot technology, as well as an NSP Police Service Dog, to determine the subject’s location inside the home.

Just after 3:00 a.m., troopers made entry into the home and located the subject hiding in the basement. He was taken into custody without incident. Keenan Jorschumb, 38, was arrested for making terroristic threats, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, and third-degree assault. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

&nbsp;(Lincoln, Neb.) — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced a series of achievements recognizing excellence in aviation and transportation at the Nebraska Aviation Council’s annual symposium in Kearney on Jan. 29-30. Western Nebraska Regional Airport was named the 2024 Airport of the Year for its exceptional service, community engagement and regional impact. 

Central Nebraska Regional Airport’s recent series of airfield lighting and navigation upgrades was recognized as the 2024 Project of the Year, improving safety and operational efficiency. Additionally, NDOT celebrated the creativity of young Nebraskans through the 2025 Aviation Youth Art Contest. 

Western Nebraska Regional Airport (Scottsbluff) Named 2024 Airport of the Year

Western Nebraska Regional Airport (WNRA) was recognized as the 2024 Airport of the Year for its vital role in aviation, community engagement and regional development. It is a critical resource for Western Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming and provides key services, including fueling, maintenance, flight instruction and rental cars. A new partnership with Kimball County Transit Authority now offers affordable transportation to Denver International Airport, expanding travel options for residents, especially those in rural areas with limited transportation. 

The airport actively engages with the community through school tours, aviation events and collaborations with Western Nebraska Community College and local Experimental Aircraft Association chapters. WNRA supports economic growth through freight services, Air Med operations and agricultural partnerships. By maintaining these strong connections, WNRA ensures responsible development for the region.

NDOT Division of Aeronautics Announces Annual Awards

North Platte, Neb. - Miss Nebraska Raechel Warren has a had a busy schedule for her with plenty different events to attend but she recently attended the Miss America Pageant in Orland Florida in late December to early January. During her trip to Florida, Warren experienced many different fun filled activities and connecting with the other states misses. Miss Nebraska roommate was Miss Montana and for Warren there might have been an 8-year age gap, but the two had a blast.&nbsp;

"It was really fun because I am one of the oldest candidates but I'm 28 and my roommate was 20 and it was quite fun. There's an age gap there but we did some Tik Tok videos, and we had so much fun together rehearsing, we got to do a ton of production rehearsals," said Miss Nebraska Raechel Warren.&nbsp;

Also happening this weekend in North Platte is the Crown and Gowns which welcomes the 2025 contestants who are in town for their headshots, get their gowns and attend workshops. On Friday, all the 2025 contestants are meeting up with Miss Nebraska for a big roller-skating party. Warren plans on keeping herself busy for the next 6 months doing events throughout the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved grantees for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Stateside Assistance Program and the Recreational Trails Program at its meeting Jan. 24 in Lincoln.

Commissioners approved the following grant awards, totaling more than $1.9 million, for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Stateside Assistance Program:

Funding from the LWCF comes from the U.S. Department of the Interior using revenues from federal oil and gas leases on the Outer Continental Shelf.

Commissioners also approved the following recreational trail projects for federal funding through the Recreational Trails Program:

Funding from the RTP comes from the Federal Highway Administration and is made possible by a portion of the federal motor fuel excise tax paid by users of off-road recreational vehicles.

At the meeting, the commissioners also approved staff recommendations to:

Keith Hurley, fish and wildlife specialist, was presented an employee Enterprise Award for innovation for the development of a fisheries data management system.

The commissioners elected their officers for 2025 as follows: Chairman, John Hoggatt, Kearney; Vice Chairman, Donna Kush, Omaha; and 2nd&nbsp;Vice Chairman, Ken Curry.

It will be the first recreational trail in Imperial;</li><li>Lower Loup Natural Resources District, $250,000 to build a 3,100-foot-long concrete trail at Pibel Lake Recreation Area;</li><li>Nebraska Game and Parks Fort Kearney State Recreation Area, $250,000 to redeck the 1,000-foot-long rail-to-trail bridge over the Platte River for park visitors, trail users and Sandhill crane watchers; and</li><li>U.S. Forest Service Bessey Ranger District, $400,000 to refurbish 1.7 miles of deteriorated Forest Road 224, which provides access to Whitetail Campground and many off-highway vehicle trails from the campground; it also would improve emergency services access to the area.</li>

It also provides the flexibility to add projects that align with the goals of the Aquatic Habitat Program;</li><li>Approve the Nebraska Game and Parks Employee Recognition Program;</li><li>For Commission designation of 593 acres of Bureau of Education Land and Funds property, located at Section 36, Township 20N, Range 54W, Banner County, as an addition to the Williams Gap Wildlife Management Area; and</li><li>Approve to relinquish irrigation water rights on the Chet and Jane Fliesbach WMA.</li>
 </ul>The following reports were presented to the commissioners:<ul>
 <li>Game and Parks’ depredation work with landowners in 2024;</li><li>Fisheries Human Dimensions research and how to apply it;</li><li>An Agriculture Program update about the Farm Bill and other projects; and</li><li>Cowboy Trail 30th&nbsp;anniversary events planned in 2025.</li>
