The Hot Sheets: February 27, 2025

Ogallala, Ne - The Ogallala City Council held their regular meeting last night, amongst the conversation, the council talked about future plans for the reconstruction of Highway 30 through Ogallala.

Ogallala City Manager, Kevin Wilkins said "The State, in order to move forward with a level of confidence to incur costs in the work and in the final design and getting ready to go out for bids; they (State) want some assurances from the local government. We have that agreement to move forward with this project." &nbsp;

Wilkins said the construction and reconstruction of highway 30 would be from one end to the other. The city is looking at a bid in 2026 and highway construction in 2027 or early 2028. &nbsp;

He says the reconstruction of 30 would primarily be around highway 61 and highway 30 junction, with resurfacing being the largest focus on the rest of highway 30 through Ogallala.&nbsp; <a href="http://www.npkubota.com">(LISTEN TO PODCAST sponsored by North Platte Kubota)</a>

The Council also discussed and voted in favor of the "Request for Qualification" for the City of Ogallala Flood Protection for City of Ogallala and Surrounding Areas. Wilkins said, this request had to happen for the City to be able to apply for an EPA Grant that potentially would give the City more funds to work on flood infrastructure when the highway 30 projects begin. The EPA Grant application is due in April of this year.&nbsp;

&nbsp;According to Wilkins, "we're looking at early estimates of eight million bucks to fix the drainage issues. &nbsp;We had a meeting with the Department of Roads a week ago and I think there's some synergy that we can gain as they tear up the highway. They've got a certain amount of drainage infrastructure that they need to replace if they tore it up anyway without oversizing it. We may be able to negotiate something where you (Department of Roads) pick up what it would cost to have just replaced it, and we (City of Ogallala) pay for the oversight.&nbsp;

They don't want to build a brand-new road and then two years later we get the money and then we go in and tear it out to put the flood infrastructure in. We're trying to time the two projects to happen at the same time."&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: February 26th, 2025

Custer County - Multiple grass fires broke out Monday afternoon in Custer County and two firefighters were injured while enroute to one of the grass fires.&nbsp;

According to Custer County Emergency Management (CCEM), eight fires were reported, however four of the fires merged into two larger incidents with one being extinguished. Four aircraft were called in to help with the fires.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fire crews from all over Custer County and neighboring counties have come together to battle these grass fires. The Custer County fire crews, who have been hard at work all day Monday were given the night off as neighboring fire departments stayed on scene and maintained the fires.&nbsp;

Over 6,000 acres have burned during Monday's grass fires as of Monday evening's report.&nbsp;Several homes are under threat as firefighters contend with challenging conditions created by melting snow and muddy terrain due to the warmer temperatures melting snow from last week's snowstorm.&nbsp;

The CCEM also stated in a post that two firefighters were injured while enroute to Lillian Road fire. The truck the two firefighters were inside rolled into a canyon.&nbsp;One firefighter was transported by Broken Bow Ambulance Service to the hospital. The second firefighter was transported by LifeNet North Platte to a regional trauma facility.&nbsp;

While crews are on scene working the fires, it is to be asked for the public to stay away from the affected area during this time for the safety of the first responders as well as the public. Traffic can cause slow response time and may cause issues.&nbsp;

The North Platte Natural Resources District held its annual Ag Symposium on Wednesday, February 19th, at the Gering Civic Center. During the day, the District awarded Howell Farms this year's conservation award. Howell Farms was nominated because the large farming operation is open to continuous conservation in a wide variety including wildlife, soil health, and water management.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Howell Farms works closely with area agronomists, NRCS, and UNL to implement more conservation, which includes nutrient management, pest management, and irrigation water management. Their farming operation completes conservation crop rotation. They also plant winter wheat as a cover following beans to maintain soil health and prevent erosion. They are very involved in irrigation water management research and work closely with University of Nebraska Extension irrigation water management specialists. Howell Farms is always looking for the next advancement to improve irrigation water management through new techniques. They allow research to be completed on their property, which is used for irrigation publications through UNL.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The North Platte Natural Resources District wants to recognize these individuals for their dedication and contributions to the future of the agricultural industry in the Panhandle of Nebraska.&nbsp;

According to the NWS, the area effects regions north of I-80 and includes fire zones 204, 206, 208 and 209. During the red flag warning, the NWS says expect wind gust from 20-30 mph with wind gust up to 45 mph. With warmer temperatures and winds, fire can spread rapidly.

MPCC Health Occupations Job Fair will be March 10

The North Platte NRD is excited to announce the new Source Water Protection Specialist, Paul Safford. Paul has a Bachelor of Science in Ag Business from the University of Wyoming. He worked at Simplot Grower Solutions for 27 years. He started as an applicator, became a crop advisor and agronomist for 10 years, and was a supervisor for 5 years in the Bayard and Scottsbluff areas.

In this new position, Paul will work with the North Platte NRD, South Platte NRD, and the NRCS offices in those areas. He will be working with landowners and producers to educate and demonstrate the best management practices for groundwater quality and quantity. He will be able to provide technical assistance, inform producers and landowners of upcoming workshops and demonstrations, and assist with financial program information and applications via email, phone calls, or direct mail.

Mid-Plains Community College’s music department will host its first concert of the spring semester March 5.

The event is free and open to the public. It will begin at 7 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

The theme is “A Little of This, and a Little of That” with a variety of music from Italian and Latin to Irish folk and jazz. The concert will feature performances by NPCC’s jazz band, the Jazzy Knights, and the college’s choirs, the Knightly Singers and the Knightingales.

&nbsp; The Frank Morrison&nbsp;award is a coveted NETA award that isn't given out every year. It is only presented to an elected official that champions the cause of tourism and goes above and beyond to impact the industry. This year the award was presented to&nbsp;Senator Jacobson. During the 2024 session, this sophomore Senator from the 42nd District around North Platte dove in and helped to stop four truly damaging bills and is still fighting the good fight during this year's session.&nbsp; We know that he will be a champion in tourism's corner for years to come.

The Crystal Compass Award&nbsp;is given out yearly to an individual that has greatly impacted NETA with their contribution to the board or a committee along with making a sizable impact in their community or region of the state.&nbsp;

This year's recipient,&nbsp;David Fudge, has dedicated over two decades of his life to making a meaningful impact to his region.&nbsp;&nbsp;Fudge served on the NETA board for over 8 years including a couple of Presidency's.&nbsp; He has worked tirelessly hand-in-hand with Senators and our lobbyists to get bills passed that supports the great state and stop bills dead in their tracks that would harm tourism.&nbsp;&nbsp;For these reasons and many more, NETA is proud to award the legendary David Fudge with this years Crystal Compass Award.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Amanda Borges has been selected as Mid-Plains Community College’s Business Student of the Month for February.

Borges is from Venango, Neb., and is married to Anthony Borges. She chose MPCC because the college offers many great opportunities, is student focused and accommodating to veterans and their families.

“MPCC has made the transition into college life seamless, while providing excellent resources and help. The instructors have provided excellent course material and lessons. I continue to learn and grow because of their efforts,” Borges said.

Business instructor Jimi Cole nominated Borges for the Student of the Month recognition.

“Amanda is a pure joy to have in class. She sparks life into every online classroom with her passion for learning, engaging discussions and infectious enthusiasm,” said Cole.

Borges is studying medical billing and coding at NPCC. She’s on track to graduate in the spring of 2025 with an associate’s degree.

She plans to continue her education by earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and becoming a certified medical coder, specializing in mental health.

In her free time, Borges said she enjoys reading, writing and outdoor activities. Her favorite thing to do is spend time with her husband, son, family and animals.

Imperial, Neb. - The Chase County Fair and Expo on Monday announced that rising artist Hudson Westbrook will headline the Saturday show for the 2025 Chase County Fair. The show is Saturday, August 16th. Tickets will go on sale at a later date. The fair committee has stated that the rest of the lineup will be announced in later March.

Hudson Westbrook to headline the Saturday night show for the 2025 Chase County Fair

LINCOLN, Neb. – Members of Nebraska LEAD Program’s Class 43 recently embarked on a 10-day National Study/Travel Seminar, gaining firsthand exposure to national and regional agricultural systems, policymaking and advocacy. The seminar, held February 5-14, took Fellows to Kansas City, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Moline, IL, for a series of immersive experiences.&nbsp;

“This seminar broadens the perspectives of Nebraska’s agricultural leaders by exposing them to key institutions, industry leaders and policymakers,” said Nebraska LEAD Program Director Kurtis Harms. “By seeing and engaging with agriculture beyond our state, Fellows gain knowledge that helps them advocate for the industry in new and meaningful ways.”&nbsp;

The itinerary featured a visit to MyCo Planet, an urban mushroom farm in Chicago, and discussions with the Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 7 Director. The Fellows also engaged with policymakers in Washington, D.C., including meetings with Nebraska Senators Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts, as well as representatives from the embassies of Canada and Spain.&nbsp;

A guided visit to the historic site of the Battle of Gettysburg provided valuable insights into leadership under pressure, while stops at the American Farm Bureau Federation and the U.S. Capitol deepened their understanding of national agricultural policy. The seminar concluded with a visit to the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences and a tour of John Deere in Moline, showcasing advancements in education and agricultural machinery.&nbsp;

“Getting to visit with individuals and groups across the country that directly impact the agricultural industry and policy has been an invaluable experience,” said Luke Baldridge, a Nebraska LEAD 43 participant. “I now have a different and broader perspective on the challenges and opportunities that we face.”&nbsp;

For more than four decades, the Nebraska LEAD Program has been committed to cultivating knowledgeable and engaged leaders in agriculture. Through hands-on learning and exposure to key decision-makers, Fellows graduate from the program equipped to drive positive change in their communities and beyond.&nbsp;

Nebraska LEAD 43 Fellows Gain National Agricultural and Policy Insights

 (McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will progress to the next phases on Feb. 24, on the bridge project located west of McCook and east of Perry Grain on US-6. 

Work will continue on the bridge located at reference post 82.59 on US-6, one mile west of McCook, while a separate crew will begin work on the bridge located at reference post 81.21 on US-6, two miles west of McCook, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Simons Contractors, Inc. of North Platte is the prime contractor for this project. Work includes bridge reconstruction, box culvert construction, grading, concrete paving, earth shoulder construction, and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions and temporary traffic signals at both bridge locations. Additionally, flaggers with a pilot car may be used for short periods of time. Traffic will be reduced to one 13-foot wide lane at both bridge locations during construction. A width restriction will be in effect. The anticipated completion is July 2025. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

However, the more people and organizations that participate, the stronger and more community-driven it becomes.&nbsp;

Families 1st Partnership receives grant funding from Nebraska Children and Families Foundation., the NE Child Abuse Prevention Fund Board, DHHS, and private donors.&nbsp; Since it became a 501c3 organization in November 2018, financial assistance to local residents has resulted in $774,456 paid to local landlords, utility companies, childcares, mechanics, and other businesses.&nbsp; $52,358 has been used to support Trainings and Collaborative Outreach in promoting services of local organizations.&nbsp; There has been $363,567 for contracts that provide direct and indirect services to local families and at risk youth.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (NE-03) led their Nebraska colleagues in&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2023/2/fischer-leads-nebraska-delegation-in-reintroducing-bill-to-award-congressional-gold-medal-to-north-platte-canteen-volunteers">reintroducing</a>&nbsp;the North Platte Canteen Congressional Gold Medal Act.

The bill would award the Congressional Gold Medal to the collective individuals and communities who volunteered or donated food and other items to the North Platte Canteen in North Platte, Nebraska, during World War II.&nbsp;U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) is an original cosponsor of the Senate legislation. U.S. Representatives Don Bacon (NE-02), and Mike Flood (NE-01) are original cosponsors of the House legislation.

“During the world’s darkest time, a host of patriotic Nebraskans volunteered to give our service members a taste of home and of hope at the&nbsp;North&nbsp;Platte&nbsp;Canteen. Those volunteers included my own mother, Florence. I’m proud to reintroduce this legislation, which will honor the Nebraskans who ran the&nbsp;North&nbsp;Platte&nbsp;Canteen&nbsp;for nearly five years during World War II,”&nbsp;said Senator Fischer.

“For four and a half years, the North Platte Canteen gave a sense of home to more than 6 million American troops traversing the country by train to serve in the Second World War. Volunteers from Nebraska communities came from as much as 200 miles away to lend a hand and provide meals, refreshments, and baked goods to up to 5,000 soldiers per day at the Canteen’s peak. This bill will honor this monumental patriotic effort as a great moment in American history. I thank Sen. Fischer for bringing legislation in the Senate and the entire delegation for supporting its introduction,”&nbsp;said Congressman Smith.“The North Platte Canteen is an excellent example of Nebraska’s tradition of patriotism. Our nation needs to be inspired by stories of service now more than ever. This bill will give these volunteers the recognition they deserve,”&nbsp;said Senator Ricketts.

“During World War II, 55,000 Nebraskans showed their patriotism and love for this country by volunteering time and donating food to the North Platte Canteen, which in turn served millions of soldiers. As a veteran, I know how much those soldiers appreciated the acts of kindness exhibited to them and I am honored to join this movement to recognize their work,”&nbsp;said Congressman Bacon.“The North Platte Canteen has long been remembered as a symbol of Nebraska’s patriotism and our state’s love for our country’s Armed Forces. The North Platte Canteen was a railroad stop in North Platte, Nebraska, that was recognized during World War II for providing hospitality to soldiers traveling through the area. An estimated 55,000 people from 125 communities throughout Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas contributed food, money, or time to serve the Canteen’s estimated 6 million visitors.

The North Platte Canteen operated from Christmas Day, 1941 to April 1, 1946. It was the largest community-based canteen in the U.S. and one of the largest volunteer efforts during World War II.

Fischer, Smith Lead Delegation in Reintroducing Bill to Honor North Platte Canteen Volunteers

&nbsp; WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (NE-03), and U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) issued the following statements after the United States Postal Service (USPS) announced that local mail processing operations will remain at the North Platte Mail Processing and Distribution Center. In addition to mail operations remaining in North Platte, Nebraska, the USPS also announced its plans to invest up to $4.4 million in modernization efforts at the North Platte facility.

“This is wonderful news for North Platte. We spoke out against the troubling plan to move mail operations to Denver, and thankfully, our concerns were heard. Mail processing operations are essential to the North Platte area, and I am glad they will continue benefitting this community and Nebraska as a whole,”&nbsp;said Senator Fischer.

"I am glad to see the Postal Service no longer plans to send local mail from the North Platte facility to Denver. Improvements to postal operations are needed to better serve Nebraskans. Any efforts toward modernization must not come at the expense of customer service but rather increase effectiveness. Because of this, I have urged President Trump to maintain high standards for rural delivery as his administration works to address the significant challenges facing the Postal Service,”&nbsp;said Congressman Smith.“The North Platte facility is vital for ensuring timely and reliable mail and package deliveries for communities across Nebraska,”&nbsp;said Senator Ricketts.&nbsp;

“This decision reaffirms that we can enhance efficiency and improve service quality without sacrificing local operations. I’m glad the Postmaster General listened to our call to protect critical services for rural Nebraska.”&nbsp;

On January 10, 2024, USPS published a notice that it was conducting a Mail Processing Facility Review of its processing operations at the North Platte P&amp;DC.

On March 11, 2024, USPS announced its initial results of the facility review, including plans to transfer some mail processing operations to the Denver P&amp;DC in Colorado.

Currently, the North Platte facility processes and distributes all mail in Nebraska west of the city of Cozad to the Wyoming border, north to the South Dakota border, and into portions of northern Kansas.

On March 28, 2024, USPS held a public meeting to share the initial results of the study and allow members of the community to provide additional feedback.

On May 8, 2024, USPS announced it will transfer operations of the North Platte Mail Processing and Distribution Center to Denver, Colorado, and convert the North Platte facility to a Local Processing Center.

Shortly after, Senator Fischer sent a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news?ID=86E21580-884E-4B59-8993-A743A6ED36E2">letter</a>&nbsp;to Postmaster DeJoy urging him to delay the proposed changes until their impact could be further studied and better understood.

As a result, on May 13, 2024, Postmaster DeJoy confirmed that the USPS would pause its planned changes and wrote that an updated plan would resume in 2025.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte, Ne - The Nebraska Sparklers, is the Nebraska chapter of the Miss America’s Little Sisters Mentoring Program. The program began as a goodwill gesture between girls in the local community and the visiting delegates. Miss Nebraska Organization's Megan Doughty says Sparklers is for little girls 6-12 years old, "they are paired with one of the Miss or Teen delegate during the Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska's Teen cometition in June for the entirety of the week. The girls get to dance with the delgates on stage, are introduced to the pageant crowd and more".&nbsp;
